Lena HorneLena Like Latin ... LP
CRC, 1961. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A set that features lots of great arrangements from Shorty Rogers – upbeat and jazzy, in ways that aren't exactly the Latin modes promised by the title, but still pretty darn great! Rogers his hitting nicely here on all burners – that leaner 60s approach he used in some of his own great records of the time, with rhythms that borrow a bit from bossa and Latin jazz, but turn their elements towards a west coast sort of groove in the end. Lennie Hayton conducts the orchestra, but he's definitely moving in a Rogers-directed mode – much more so than on earlier dates with Lena for RCA. Titles include "Meditation", "More", "Old Devil Moon", "My Blue Heaven", "Cuckoo In The Clock", "From This Moment On", and "Take Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove.)

Lena HorneStormy Weather ... LP
RCA, 1957. Near Mint- ... $6.99
One of Lena Horne's greatest albums of the 50s – a rock-solid effort that takes its name from her famous film appearance of the 40s, but which features some wonderfully sophisticated songs in a very postwar mode! As with other RCA dates of the time, the orchestra's handled by Lena's partner Lennie Hayton – and has a nice jazzy pitch, especially on tunes that feature trumpet solos from Charlie Shavers. Titles include "Summertime", "Mad About The Boy", "Tomorrow Mountain", "Ridin On The Moon", "I Wonder What Became Of Me", and "Just One Of Those Things". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has a peeled spot on the front.)

✨✧ Lena Horne & Gabor SzaboLena & Gabor ... LP
Skye, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Think what you want about Lena Horne – but this is a plenty darn groovy album! Sure, Lena's style is usually a bit classy and uptown – almost so much so that we don't really dig most of her records. But here, she's working in a very groovy style – paired with the great guitarist Gabor Szabo, in a set of sweetly swinging tunes that share many touches with Gabor's grooviest sides for Impulse and Skey in the 60s! Gabor produced and arranged with Gary McFarland – and the pair really transform the sound of Lena's voice, taking her normally-poised vocals and loosening them up with a subtly funky undercurrent. Richard Tee plays some great organ on the set, in a small combo that also includes Grady Tate and Chuck Rainey – and titles include a lot of Beatles covers – like "Rocky Raccoon", "Fool On The Hill", and "In My Life" – plus the cuts "Nightwind", "Watch What Happens", and "My Mood Is You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Non-gatefold Skye pressing. Cover has a cutout notch.)

A Alyce Claerbaut/David SchlesingerStrayhorn – An Illustrated Life (hardcover) ... Book
Bolden, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99 35.00
A beautiful tribute to one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century – Duke Ellington's longtime musical partner, the mighty Billy Strayhorn! The book presents Billy's life and music in a really great format – using songs as sidebars amidst the larger text – which is then illustrated with a huge amount of beautiful oversized photos, reproductions of scores, and other great images! There's also additional sidebars on Strayhorn from jazz peers who include Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Lena Horne, and many others – and the book has this wonderfully vivid approach that really does the creative genius as much justice on the page as he's gotten on record. 196 pages, hardcover, and filled with great images! VariousLes Disques De La Victoire – American Army V-Discs 1943 to 1949 (4CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1940s. New Copy 4CD ... $19.99 29.99
A really great overview of the V-Discs label of the 40s – the imprint started by the US Army as a way of circulating the jazz and swing sounds of the time to soldiers overseas! As you'd guess from the dates, the label was started during the American involvement in WWII – but then continued as a key part of its work in rebuilding the European scene of the postwar years – almost as a musical extension of the work of the State Department! Yet despite that governmental tie-in, the music here is all pretty darn great on its own – and given that most V-Discs titles were not available for commercial sale, they also represent a unique slice of the 78rpm market of the time. The 4CD set features detailed notes in French and English, 92 tracks in all, and some songs even include messages from the artists too – with work by Don Redman, Jo Stafford, Louis Prima, Duke Ellington, Earl Robinson, Frank Sinatra, Carson Robinson, Carmen Miranda, Frankie Carle, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, Glen Gray, Les Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Randy Brooks, Kay Starr, Buddy Rich, Charlie Barnet, Spike Jones, Bob Crosby, Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Cab Calloway, Harry James, and many more!
