✨✧ Legends Of The Underground (Mark De Clive Lowe)Legends Of The Underground – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant meeting of the minds – one that features the coming together of some of the greatest talents on the current cosmic groove scene! Legends Of The Underground is a project spearheaded by Mark De Clive-Lowe, and featuring work from Domu, Seiji, and Bembe Segue – all of whom work with Mark in a set of blistering tunes that take the London sound of the past few years to the next level! There's an intensity and focus here that remind us of 4Hero at their Two Pages best – a sense of spacey jazz mixed with modern groove – all swirling to the skies on waves of power, life, joy, and energy. Vocals often have a floating, spiritual sort of quality – and the tunes dip and bubble nicely throughout. Titles include "The Divine Room", "The Gathering (parts 1 & 2)", "The Dark Room", "Anarchite City", and "Paradise Garden". CD

Sundazed, Mid 1960s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Never-issued work by a very cool Bay Area combo – one who deliver some very searing guitar-driven instrumentals – almost more Northwest garage at times than some of the surf rock promised in the title! Guitarist Richard Frost is young here, but already on fire at the level that would make his later work noteworthy – pushing the edges of some of the guitar instrumental conventions, while still remembering to bring in occasional moments of twang to keep things on track! The group recorded these great cuts in the mid 60s, all top tracks that somehow never saw the light of day until now – in a package that features ten studio tracks with a few more even rawer live numbers from the scene! Titles include "The Fugitive", "Opus Twist", "Wipe Out", "Just Pickin", "San Ho Say", "The Fight", "Green Fields", and "Night Train". CD

Shuya Okino/SleepwalkerUnited Legends – Replayed By Sleepwalker ... CD
Geneon (Japan), 2007. Used 2 CDs ... $24.99
An amazing new version of the United Legends by Shuya Okino – one that has the record completely recorded with jazz backings from Sleep Walker – all in a sound that's even better than the original! The album's almost a Sleep Walker album at heart – with tremendous sax and modal piano lines – but Okino's presence is certainly felt in the slightly more soulful presentation of the record – especially on the vocal numbers, which are a wonderful blend of contemporary soul and club jazz! The 2CD package offers up one disc of vocal tunes, and a second that presents the same tunes as instrumentals by the combo – with a bit more solo lines in place of the vocals. Singers include Clara Hill, Josh Milan, Carleen Anderson, Navasha Daya, Diviniti, and Yukimi Nagano – and titles include "Shine", "Thank You", "Love Is The Key", "If It Is Love", "Pieces Of You", and "Beautiful Sadness". ✨✧ Junie C Cobb & His New Hometown BandChicago – The Living Legends ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trad-revival set recorded on Chicago's south side in the early 60s – part of an excellent series on Riverside, seeking to re-discover some older jazz and blues greats who were languishing in the Windy City at the time! Junie C Cobb plays mostly piano on the date, but also sings on one number too – in a style that's got plenty of bluesy undercurrents, particularly on the numbers that feature vocals by Annabelle Calhoun. Other group members include Leon Washington on tenor, Fortunatus Fip Ricard on trumpet, and Harlen Bobby Floyd on trombone – and titles include "Be Mine", "Just Because Of You", "Swing Your Hurdy Gurdy", "Once Or Twice", and "Belligerent Blues". ✨✧ Willis JacksonLegends Of Acid Jazz – Keep On A Blowin'/Thunderbird ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1959/1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavy tenor from Willis Jackson – two early 60s killers for Prestige, back to back on a single CD! First up is Keep On A Blowin – an album that has hard wailin' soul jazz solos by Brother Jack McDuff on organ and Wild Bill Jennings on guitar! Those two, plus Gator, make up the core of the combo that features additional backing by bass and drums, but you won't need to worry about the additional players, because the triple threat of tenor/organ/guitar will hold all your attention. Tracks are long, and as usual, the best ones are the originals, including "Blue Strollin", "A Smooth One", and "Keep On A Blowin". Thunderbird is a massive groover – and a set that rumbles as much as you might guess from the title! The album's got Willis Jackson blowing in a very open, loud tenor tone – working with an unusual group that features Freddie Roach on organ, and Wild Bill Jennings on guitar – the former a hip, smooth keyboardist, the latter a rougher, bluesier player – making for a really nice mix of modes! There's a deep soul jazz bottom throughout – and titles include "Thunderbird", "Oh Lady Be Good", "Back & Forth", and "California Sun". CD

✨✧ Sonny PhillipsLegends Of Acid Jazz – Sure 'Nuff/Black On Black! ... CD
Prestige, 1969/1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Keyboardist Sonny Phillips was one of the lesser-known talents on the Prestige roster of jazz funk greats in the early 70s – and this nice 2-in-1 CD brings together his 2 best albums for the label, both of which feature Phillips on organ, along with giants like Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones on guitar, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Rusty Bryant on tenor. The album Sure Nuff is probably Phillips' best for the label – a set that's done with the lean, hard funky sound of other greats working for Prestige during the same time – especially on the cuts "Sure Nuff, Sure Nuff", "The Other Blues", "Be Yourself", and "Oleo". Black On Black has a bit more of a mellow groove, but still kicks nicely, especially on the tracks "Check It Out", and "Black On Black". 10 tracks in all, with the usual "Legends Of Acid Jazz" package. ✨✧ Melvin SparksLegends Of Acid Jazz – Sparks/Spark Plug ... CD
Prestige, 1970/1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two of the best Melvin Sparks albums on one CD – Sparks and Spark Plug! Sparks is a killer – one of the best from Prestige during the runaway classic years of the early 70s! Melvin Sparks is a genius guitarist, with a talent as rich as that of Grant Green, who's probably his most immediate precursor. He'd played in the groups of Lou Donaldson and Jack McDuff during the late 60s, but by the time of this release, he was breaking out on his own as one of the hottest funk guitarists in jazz. The group's an excellent one – and features Idris Muhammad on funky drums, Virgil Jones on trumpet, and the great Leon Spencer on organ. The tracks are nice and long, especially the original "The Stinker", and the cool cover of "Spill the Wine". Also includes a great funky cover of Sly Stone's "Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf". Spark Plug is more massive funkiness – and features a crack group of young heavy hitters like Sparks on guitar, Leon Spencer on organ, Grover Washington on tenor, and Idris Muhammad on drums – all wailing, just wailing, away on long funky tracks with solos that go waaaaay over the top! There's a full, extended brilliance here that has to be heard to be believed – an intensity of jazz funk energy that few groups or scenes in later years ever matched. Tracks include the wild "Conjunction Mars", "Spark Plug", and a funky cover of "Who's Gonna Take The Weight". CD

The album's a classic set recorded in Chicago in the early 60s – featuring both Montgomery in a spare solo setting, and with help from a small backup group that includes Ted Butterman on cornet, Bob Gordon on clarinet, and Mike McKendrick on banjo. Little Brother plays piano on all numbers, and sings on most – and titles include "44 Vicksburg", "Prescriptions Of The Blues", "Sweet Daddy", "Home Again Blues", "Up The Country Blues", "Saturday Night Function", "Michigan Water Blues", and "Oh Daddy". ✨✧ Don Patterson & Booker ErvinLegends Of Acid Jazz – Exciting New Organ Of Don Patterson – plus bonus tracks ... CD
Prestige, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tasty set of extended organ/tenor grooves – one full album, plus bonus tracks! The core album here is The Exciting New Organ Of Don Patterson – a well-titled session, given the strong early groove of organist Don! At a time when some of his contemporaries were tightening things up on the Hammond, going for shorter tunes aimed at the jukebox and radio crowd, Don Patterson was a great reminder that the organ was best used on longer jamming tracks – tunes that stretched out nicely with a style that was heard best in the clubs, where an organ player could really do his thing. Patterson's trio here is quite stripped down – just drums from Billy James, and tenor from Booker Ervin – another player who always knows what to do with plenty of space! Titles include versions of "The Good Life", "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", and "Oleo", plus two Patterson originals – "Up In Betty's Room" and "S'Bout Time". Added to these tracks are 2 more – the 16 minute "Hip Cake Walk", which features alto from Leonard Houston too, plus "Love Me With All Your Heart". CD

✨✧ Shirley Scott with Kenny Burrell & Lem WinchesterSoul Sister – Legends Of Acid Jazz (Travelin Light/Soul Sister) ... CD
Prestige, 1960/1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two Shirley Scott classics – back to back on a single CD! First up is Travelin Light. Kenny Burrell joins the trio of organist Shirley Scott for this sweet little album – a set that seems to burn a bit more than usual for Shirley, probably because of the cool-toned guitar lines from Kenny! The album's got the same laid back feel as other Scott albums of the time, but Burrell really digs in during his solos – adding a bit more bite, and inspiring Shirley to do the same on her own Hammond lines. Bass is by Eddie Khan and drums are by Otis Finch – and titles include "Solar", "The Kerry Dance", "They Call It Stormy Monday", "Nice N Easy", and "Baby It's Cold Outside". Next up is Soul Sister – a record that has Shirley Scott getting some mighty cool help from vibist Lem Winchester – a player whose tones always make a session worth checking out! Lem's got a nicely punctuated feel to his vibes on the record – a tight, short punch that works beautifully alongside Scott's fluid Hammond lines – almost enough on their own, even without the rhythm help of George Duvivier on bass and Art Edgehill on drums. Tracks include "Blues For Tyrone", "The More I See You", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Like Young", and "Sonnymoon For Two". Also includes the bonus track "Now's The Time", recorded at the same session. CD

✨✧ Gene AmmonsLegends Of Acid Jazz – Black Cat!/You Talk That Talk! ... CD
Prestige, 1970/1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pair of funky killers from tenorist Gene Ammons! Black Cat is one of the great funky albums that Gene Ammons cut for Prestige at the start of the 70s – quite different than his earlier work for the label, and a very different showcase for his tenor genius! The whole lineup here is amazing – a quintet that features heavy drums from Idris Muhammad, piano and Fender Rhodes from Harold Mabern, bass from Ron Carter, and some tremendously smoking guitar from the great George Freeman! Freeman goes nuts on the funky cut "The Black Cat" – and other tracks include "Jug Eyes", "Hi Ruth", "Something", and "Piece To Keep Away Evil Spirits". You Talk That Talk is a set done in collaboration with Sonny Stitt – and these two tenor giants meet in the period slightly before Ammons death, and they're grouped with some of the younger funky players on Prestige, like Leon Spencer, Idris Muhammad, and George Freeman. The sound is fairly traditional, but there's some nice funky moments. Tracks include "Out Of It", which was written by Harold Vick, "The People's Choice", written by Harold Ousley, and the title cut, which is a Leon Spencer original. The 14 track set includes the full titles from 2 LPs, plus 2 bonus cuts from a rare source! CD

✨✧ Dexter Gordon/Zoot Sims/Al CohnWe Three – Tenor Sax Legends ... CD
Biograph, 1956/1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
An unusual collection of tunes, but a nice one – and a set that offers rare tenor sax work from 2 decades! The first half of the set is material from Al Cohn's 1956 album for Dawn Records – Cohn On The Saxophone – one of the best sessions that Al ever cut, done with a small group setting, a rare privilege for Al, who was so often lost in a larger group! Cohn's tenor is right out front, and the rest of the players include Frank Rehak, Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson. Cohn contributes the original tunes "Be Loose" and "Good Ol Blues" – and the rest of the tracks include "We Three", "Idaho", "When Day Is Done", and "The Things I Love". Next is one track from Zoot Sims – "Ill Wind" –also recorded for Dawn in 1956. And then, most interestingly, are three 1977 recordings by Dexter Gordon – done in New York with a group that includes Lionel Hampton on vibes, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, and Candido on congas. Dex plays both tenor and soprano, and the presence of these other instrumentalists give the session a nicely different feel than some of his other work of the time. The focus is on easygoing ballads and standards, played with sublime maturity by Dex – and titles include "Lullaby Of Birdland", "I Should Care", and "Seven Come Elven". CD

The first-ever western collection of work from Japanese jazz giant Jiro Inagaki – a great saxophonist in his own right, and a real master of the groove with his Soul Media band! The double-length set is overflowing with gems from the golden age of Jiro and that group – tunes that effortlessly mix together acoustic and electric elements, with occasional nods to Japanese cultural styles – all at a level that's every bit as groovy as European work from the MPS/Saba generation! Jiro blows tenor, soprano, and flute on the tracks – and other players include the great Norio Maeda on organ, Hiromasa Suzuki on electric piano, and Ryo Kawasaki on guitar – on titles that include "Wandering Birds", "That's How I Feel", "Sniper's Snooze", "Head Rock", "Breeze", "Twenty One", "By The Red Stream", "Back Off Boogaloo", "Theme", "Express", "Barock", and "Painted Paradise". ✨✧ Boogaloo Joe JonesLegends Of Acid Jazz – No Way/What It Is ... CD
Prestige, 1970/1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
Prepare yourself for some massive guitar-heavy funk – with 2 classic Prestige albums from the legendary Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones! First up is No Way – a record that features him working with a young Grover Washington Jr on tenor, whose got a sound here that's way harder than on some of his later albums – and right up there with the best of the Prestige jazz funk greats. Sonny Phillips plays organ and electric piano, and the dark horse Butch Cornell gets in some organ licks on 2 tracks. Bernard Purdie holds down the fort nicely on drums, and the album's got a nice Fender bass to groove things strong in the rhythm department. Tracks include "No Way", "Holdin Back", "If You Were Mine", "Sunshine Alley", and "I'll Be There". What It Is is more killer funkiness from Boogaloo Joe Jones! Grover Washington Jr makes an incredible appearance here – sounding much harder and heavier than on some of his Kudu recordings – more of a gritty soul jazz player, working beautifully alongside the sharp guitar of Boogaloo Joe Jones, and the sweet organ of Sonny Phillips! The groove is lean, clean, and a bit laidback – not as frenetic as some of Jones' other jams, but in a great way that shows a new sense of space and timing in his groove! Other players include Bernard Purdie on drums and Jimmy Lewis on Fender bass – and titles include "Inside Job", "Fadin", "What It Is", and a nice cover of "Ain't No Sunshine". Amazing guitar work throughout – and a very tight batch of funky jazz! CD

A selection of tracks by Jack McDuff that were originally recorded in a few different sessions – then spread about some of his best (and rarest) albums of the mid 60s. Nearly all of the tracks feature Jack's classic quartet with Red Holloway, George Benson, and the great Joe Dukes on drums – and the few that don't have some superb large group arrangements by Benny Golson that provide a wildly swinging platform for Jack's groovy solos. Titles include "Scufflin", "Lew's Piece", "Our Miss Brooks", "From the Bottom Up", and "Lexington Avenue Line". Lots of tracks, and a screamin' organ jazz set all the way through! CD

✨✧ Don Patterson, Booker Ervin & Houston PersonLegends Of Acid Jazz – Just Friends (Four Dimensions/Hip Cake Walk/bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige, 1964/1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two organ and tenor classics – back to back on a single CD – with some bonus cuts too! Four Dimensions is sweet soulful work from the legendary Don Patterson – a great Prestige set that has tenorist Houston Person joining the organist's hip trio with Pat Martino on guitar and Billy James on drums! The tunes have that loping soul jazz sound you'd find in Person's best early work at the time – a groove that's got plenty of bottom, but also a nice dose of lyricism as well – and the use of Houston's horn here seems to bring out a different approach from Patterson than you'll hear on his sessions with Booker Ervin. There's a very slight hardbop element at times – and titles include "Sandu", "Freddie Tooks Jr", "Red Top", and "Last Train From Overbrook". Next up are most of the tracks from the album Hip Cake Walk – a massive pairing of the tenor of Booker Ervin and Hammond of Don Patterson – a record that's got a very famous cover image, and which marks for one of the greatest meetings of soul and modernism at mid-60s Prestige Records! There's no bass at all on the set – just lots of quick, tight rhythm lines from Patterson on the pedals of the Hammond – mixed with drums from Billy James, and served up with plenty of space for Ervin to open up on tenor – blowing with more soul than on some of his modernist sides of the time! Oddly, the CD does not include the title cut – "Hip Cake Walk" – but does include the other 4 tracks from the album, "Rosetta", "Sister Ruth", "Under The Boardwalk", and "Donald Duck". CD also features more Ervin/Patterson material from the same session – the tracks "Sentimental Journey", "Theme For Dee", and "Just Friends". CD

A wonderful treasure from Arsenio Rodriguez – a rare recording for Epic Records, and one of his best American albums ever! The set's done in a really rootsy style that's very much in keeping with the title – often just using raw percussion next to Arsenio's work on tres – creating an almost folkloric feel that's a far cry from the more conventional Latin albums that Rodriguez recorded on the US scene. The tunes are all still quite rhythmic, though – and if anything, the raw percussion and chanted vocals only seem to heighten the energy of the session. Titles include "Canto Abacoa", "Baila Simbale", "Bruca Manigua", "Lost Teenagers Bailan Changui", "Quindembo Hot", and "Mona". CD

GRP, 1978. Sealed Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
We'll be the first to admit smooth jazz radio has made us very wary of GRP, but the label put out enough nice records in it's early years, we're constantly rethinking that opinion! This early set by Dave Valentin is a great example – as it captures the flautist at his early best, way before he got too smooth, and still had some credibility gained from his work on the NYC Latin scene. Arrangements are by Dave Grusin, who's working here in a sweet blend of his own fusion styles with a few more Latin touches to suit Valentin's roots – and titles include "Legends", "Bouree In E Minor", "Sea Pines", "Crystal Silence", "Afro Blue", "Masquerade", "Patterns For The Sky" and "I Want To Be Where You Are". Sono Radio/Discos Monterey (Spain), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $33.99 36.99
The second great album from Peruvian funk legends Black Sugar, and a set that's every bit as great as the first – perhaps even more so from a keyboard perspective, given that there's plenty of sweet organ and moog that filter through the set! The record's got the group sounding even tighter than before – mixing Latin rhythms with some great elements from American soul and funky fusion – all wrapped up nicely with a personal, heartfelt sort of approach that's really great. Victor Coco Salazar handles arrangements, guitars, and vocals – and the album features killer covers of "Valdez In The Country" and "Don't You Worry About A Thing" – plus the originals "Fuego", "Checan", "All Your Love", "Wake Up", and "I Want To Believe". Inge BrandenburgI Love Jazz ... CD
Unisono (Germany), 1960s. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
Maybe the grooviest music we've ever heard from the legendary German jazz singer Inge Brandenburg– but that's also no surprise, as she gets some heavy help here on the backings – including a number that feature MPS legend Erwin Lehn, and a few more by the combo of saxophonist Klaus Doldinger with Ingfried Hoffman on the Hammond! Inge's always pretty darn great, but the quality of these sides is superb – and there's a definite commitment to top-shelf jazz work throughout, on sessions that were recorded between 1960 and 1971, and which are collected here on CD for the first time ever! The set features a really nice range of material – and even features a few originals composed by other MPS legends – including Peter Herbholzheimer and Wolfgang Dauner. Titles include "Taste Of Honey", "Summertime", "Like A Straw", "But Not For Me", "Hello Little Boy", "I Love Jazz", "Moritat", "Stella By Starlight", "What's The Matter Daddy", and "Round Midnight". Parachute/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
One of the most compelling albums ever recorded by guitarist Eugene Chadbourne – a set billed as "free improvised country and western bebop" – and which features Chadbourne serving up these wild variations on tunes by Carl Perkins, Roger Miller, David Allen Coe, Bobby Bare, Merle Haggard, and other country music legends! The album's much more Eugene than Nashville – although Chadbourne does sing lyrics on all of the tunes, but in a way that's very offbeat and hardly unlike the originals at all – as is his guitar work, which is acoustic and all twisted and turned up in all the offbeat phrasings you might expect! Much of the record is Chadbourne on vocals and electric dobro – but the set also features some drums by David Licht, saxes from John Zorn, and cello from Tom Cora. Titles include "The Last Word In Lonesome Is Me", "I'm The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised", "Georgia In A Jug", "Motel Time Again", "Dang Me", "Window Shopping", "Jealous Loving Heart", "Mr Record Man", and "Swingin Doors". Division 81 (Italy), 2024. New Copy 2LP ... $32.99 39.99
An album that really lives up to its title – as the record sets out to prove to the world that Isaiah Collier is one of the most almighty talents on the saxophone in recent years! The album has a spiritual majesty that tops even the previous album with the Chosen Few group – as in addition to work from the quartet that includes Julian Davis Reid on piano, Jeremiah Hunt on bass, and Michael Shekwoaga Ode on drums – the group adds in extra instrumentation, light strings, and added horns at times too – all of which push the music into territory that's right up there with Nimbus or Strata East back in the glory days! Collier is a true jazz visionary, and his message here is bold and brilliant – given some key support from older Chicago legends who include saxophonist Ari Brown on one track, and vocalist Dee Alexander on another – getting maybe one of her most beautiful showcases ever on record. Titles include "Love", "Compassion", "Duality Suite", "The Almighty", and "Perspective (Peace & Love)". LP, Vinyl record album

Right from the very first note, you'll know you're in for something special here – the unusual phrasing and open-hearted qualities that made Von Freeman one of the true Chicago legends on the tenor saxophone – even though he never got the global fame of contemporaries like Clifford Jordan or Johnny Griffin! Yet we can easily mention Von in the company of both of those giants – and as you'll hear here, Freeman's got a depth of expression that also rivals Gene Ammons and Dexter Gordon, especially on the open-ended, stretched out ballads that make up most of the material here. The group is very easygoing – perfect for the spirit of the music – John Young on piano, David Shipp on bass, and Wilbur Campbell on drums – on titles that include "Serenade In Blue", "Time After Time", "After Dark", and "Von Freeman's Blues". Two Chicago blues legends, coming together on stage at the Montreux festival – but with the sort of raw energy you might expect to hear when the pair were working together at a west side club! The guitar genius of Buddy Guy is no secret to anyone – but here, it's got a raw sense of urgency that's often missing from so many later records – and Junior Wells brings in some equally strong harmonica lines, often without the easier flourishes from later in his career. Both artists sing – trading leads on the set – and the combo also features Jimmy Johnson on guitar, Dave Myers on bass, and Odie Payne on drums. Titles include "Driving Wheel", "Help Me", "One Room Country Shack", "Hide Away", and "Come On In This House". Capitol, 1965/1966. Used ... $6.99
Merle's debut album, and a benchmark in the history of country and popular music! Hag's role as country's most mournful outlaw hadn't fully evolved at this early point in his career but the seeds are planted, with the single "(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers" and "The Worst Is Yet To Come" as the most obvious sign posts for what would come in subsequent years. Other tracks include "Sing A Sad Song", "I'd Trade All Of My Tomorrows", "You Don't Even Try", and "Walking The Floor Over You". Next up is Swinging Doors – a classic that swung open all kinds of doors for Hag and all honky tonk legends to follow! The barroom laments come into full bloom on this record, with the unvarnished honky tonk style that Hag helped define, though done with just enough Capitol polish, courtesy of the great and legendary producers Ken Nelson and Fuzzy Owen. It contains uber-classic "The Bottle Let Me Down" plus the equally great title track, plus comparably overlooked album classics like "I'll Look You Over", "The Girl Turned Ripe", "No More You & Me", "I Can't Stand Me", "No More You And Me" a great version of the Tommy Collins classic and Bakersfield Sound bedrock "High On A Hilltop", and "Shade Tree (Fix-It Man)". The group here is really the stuff of legends – as the set features a very late performance from Eric Dolphy on alto, plus Joe Henderson on tenor, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Richard Davis on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – all players at the prime of their young talents, soaring to the skies under the leadership of Hill – skittishly working their way into territory that's never truly free, but wonderfully expressive and exploratory – a clear summation of the sense of "modern" in modern jazz! All tracks are originals by the pianist, too – and titles include "New Monastery", "Flight 19", "Spectrum", "Dedication", and "Refuge". Andrew HillPoint Of Departure To Compulsion – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Two classic 60s albums from pianist Andrew Hill – back to back in a single set! First up is Point Of Departure – mindblowing work from pianist Andrew Hill – one of the key records during that short initial run when Blue Note was really giving him a special showcase for his talents – and when the label was dabbling in more avant jazz as part of the "new thing" moment on the scene! Compulsion is one of the most dynamic albums that Andrew Hill ever cut for Blue Note – a record of long tracks, played by a largeish group who seem perfectly suited to Hill's most creative musical ideas! There's an approach here that almost predates some of the more righteous soul jazz ensemble sides of the 70s – as Hill's piano leads a octet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, John Gilmore on tenor and bass clarinet, Cecil McBee and Richard Davis on basses, Joe Chambers on drums, and Nedi Quamar and Renaud Simmons on percussion. The percussionists roll out with quite a bit of presence in the set – not so much as on some of the Art Blakey percussion sides for Blue Note, but more with a pronounced sense of "bottom" that you might not always hear from Hill – an earthy, sometimes organic way of riffing that then allows freer solo work from the horns and piano on the top! Titles include "Compulsion", "Legacy", "Premonition", and "Limbo". CD

Killer live work from Seu Jorge – one of his boldest, proudest records to date – and that's saying a lot, given the soulful promise of all his other work! We've always loved Jorge, but we first really fell in love with his music in a live setting – where he's got an undeniable charm and charisma, on a level with older legends like Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye at their best. Other live sets have always shown Jorge as a mellower, more acoustic artist – but this one really has him exploding with a very funky sound throughout – really hitting that superstardom we always saw coming in his talents – working before a very large crowd, and clearly driving them nuts with his sublime performance on the set. The album's a real step forward for Jorge – upbeat, funky, filled with soul, and exactly the kind of music that should hopefully have him exploding around the globe. Don't let the "playhouse" in the title fool you – as this isn't a casual set of goofy numbers, and instead the album represents a wonderful meeting of two older piano legends – John Lewis and Hank Jones, playing here in a relaxed, easygoing setting that really lets them open up! The rare Japanese-only album is a complement to the American album of twin pianos that John Lewis and Hank Jones recorded around the same time – but there's a nice change here, in that the record changes things up – and features two duets between Lewis and Jones, two quartet numbers with bass from George Duvivier and drums from Shelly Manne, and two trio numbers, one by each pianist! A rare funky gem from the Chicago scene in the pre-house years – but a set that also might be a crucial bridge between the city's 70s soul and the underground clubs that would soon give the world a new groove! The group have plenty of funk elements in the mix – kind of a tightened-up version of P-Funk at times, with lots of bass in the mix – and all these cool moogy keyboard touches – topped by vocals from the group – who often have a call to action sort of vibe, really urging on the groove! The record's definitely too hardcore to have gotten much national radio play – sharper and more wicked than the major label funk of the time – and the use of female vocals in the mix also have a very different vibe than in disco, too – a quality that's hard to describe, but which really stands out. The set features some arrangements by Floyd Morris and Tom Tom 84 – two mighty legends in the Chicago soul scene – and titles include "Doin' It To Def", which has sort of a "We Will Rock You" intro, plus "Hot Spot", "Grab Your Sexy Baby", and "Funk Power". Elektra/Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99 36.99
Three classic albums from Shoes, plus bonus tracks, and a full CD worth of rare material too! First up is Present Tense – a power-pop classic from Shoes – their first full length for Elektra Records, and a set that stands with all the best end of 70s gems from either coast! The songs are impeccable, and the group do a fantastic job of blending sharper guitars with really great lyricism – a mode that maybe makes the Illinois group a strong precursor for territory that The Replacements wouldn't hit until many years later – and which makes just about every track on the album a precious nugget that just gets better and better with time! Titles include "Now & Then", "Every Girl", "I Don't Wanna Hear It", "Three Times", "In My Arms Again", and "Too Late". On Tongue Twister, Shoes continue the brilliance of their first album for Elektra – serving up the kind of music that was so well-done, so subtle, it was maybe missed by most of the world at the time – even though it's gone onto the status of classic, thanks to legions of fans and critics! Shoes have a way with a tune that's unlike anyone else – maybe that compressed charm of Big Star, but fused into the sharper modes of the power pop years – but without any of the too commercial modes of some of the bigger groups of the time. Instead, the whole thing feels like you've just stumbled upon a brilliant band, playing in a backroom bar – which, unfortunately, is how Shoes spent too much of their career. Titles include "Only In My Sleep", "She Satisfies", "Found A Girl", "Hate To Run", "When It Hits", "Yes Or No", "Your Imagination", and "Girls Of Today". On Boomerang, Shoes maybe look a bit too new wave on the cover, but still sound perfect within – very much in charge of that perfect yet understated approach to a tune that has gone on to make them legends in all the many years since this album was released! The group were never out to change the world, and maybe that held them back at the time – but they were also never trying for big chart success, or too-slick modes – and there's a wonderfully honest, down to earth approach to the songwriting and production that clearly sets the stage for all the bigger late 80s groups that would follow in their wake. Nearly every tune is a completely catchy mofo – and titles include "Curiosity", "In Her Shadow", "Double Talk", "The Summer Rain", "Under The Gun", "The Tube", and "What Love Means". 4CD set features a huge amount of bonus material – 8 track demo versions of all three albums, added to their discs – and a bonus CD of 18 more rare tracks – all in a box, with a big booklet of notes! Siegel Schwall BandSleepy Hollow ... LP
Wooden Nickel, 1974. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Nothing sleepy here, as the Siegel Schwall Band are very much in the lean, bluesy territory that made them such a standout act on the Chicago scene of the 70s! These guys have a real Old Town blend of folk roots and blues inspirations – never trying to force things with either too much bravado in their performance, nor any assumptions that they're going to challenge their legends – instead just working with lots of great original material of their own, in a nicely rootsy vibe – with the mighty Corky Siegel on lead vocals, piano, and harmonica. Titles include "Sleepy Hollow", "Blues For A Lady", "Sick To My Stomach", "Always Thinkin Of You Darlin", "Hey Billie Jean", and "Somethin's Wrong". LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver6 Pieces Of Silver ... LP
Blue Note, 1956. Good ... $43.99 49.99
The lyrical genius at his best – an early record from pianist Horace Silver, but one that already has him really defining that special sort of sound that made him really stand out from his contemporaries! The difference here is hard to put in words – but there's a careful ear for an unusual phrasing in a tune that Silver delivers throughout – not just on his own compositions and piano solos, but also in the way that he puts the whole group together – with stellar work from Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – all players who were about to become leaders and legends on their own, working here under fantastic guidance from Horace. Hayes is particularly great, and his warm drumming brings Silver's playing into a new range that still keeps a lot of his bop roots, but which also allows more room for the kind of flourishes that makes his recordings from this time so great. Titles include the classic "Senor Blues" – plus "Cool Eyes", "Shirl", "Camouflage", "For Heaven's Sake", "Virgo", and "Enchantment". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Lexington Ave pressing with deep groove, RVG etch, and ear. Cover has a split bottom seam, light surface wear, and aging.)

Horace SilverFinger Poppin' With The Horace Silver Quintet ... LP
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good- ... $79.99
Classic Blue Note work by Horace Silver – the stuff that soul jazz legends are made of, and an album that showed he was destined to be a huge force away from the Jazz Messengers! Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook hold down the frontline with Horace – playing in a mellifluous style that links the tenor and trumpet magically, dancing in sweetly lyrical lines over the impeccable rhythm team of Gene Taylor on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Tracks are short, tight, and grooving with a sound that's virtually the blueprint for early soul jazz – and the album includes classic Silver tunes like "Come On Home", "Mellow D", "Finger Poppin", and "Swingin The Samba". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo deep groove NYC pressing, with RVG stamp and ear. Vinyl has a click on a song and a half near the end of side two, but is nice and clean overall. Cover is very nice.)

SorcerersI Too Am A Stranger ... LP
ATA (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
The Sorcerers are a small group, but they've got a really expansive sound – a blend of percussion, keyboards, and jazzy horn work that feels like a much larger Afro Funk group – but often delivered with a lean focus on the rhythms that really makes them sound unique! There's plenty of echoes of both West and East African styles here – served up in a mix of flutes, saxes, vibes, keyboards, and trumpets – plus mighty sharp percussion at the core, which drives the record in a nice range of rhythms that break from any standard modes you might expect! The vibe is almost as if The Sorcerers have drunk deep from all the classics of artists like Fela, Mulatu, Ebo Taylor, and other older legends – then found a way to distill them all together with energy that's all their own. Titles include "The Road Forward", "Yasuke In Roppongi", "Moth", "He Who Kills With One Leap", and "Oromo Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

Sugarman ThreePure Cane Sugar ... CD
Daptone, 2002. Used ... $5.99
The greatest album to date from Sugarman 3 – one of the funkiest combos of the past 50 years! The group's organ/sax sound has never sounded so great – and it's pumped up even further here from some added guest instrumentation, including drums from Bernard Purdie, plus vocals on a number of cuts from deep funk legends Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, and Naomi Davis. The whole thing's as funky as funky can be – the kind of a record that would be selling for $300 if it came out in the 70s, and which is even nicer to have at a low everyday price! Titles include "Shot Down", "Modern Jive", "Funky So & So", "Take It As It Come", "Pure Cane", "Promised Land", "Country Girl", "La Culebra", "Down To It", "Honey Wagon", and "Bosco's Blues". CD

SupremesMore Hits By The Supremes ... LP
Motown/Elemental, 1965. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
A killer from the early days of The Supremes – and way more than you'd guess from the "hits" in the title! The record's not really a roundup of the hit singles already out on 45 – and is actually just an apt title for what the album was destined to be – a stone hit that really put these Motown legends on the map! Production is by the Holland/Dozier/Holland team – with a marvelous wall of sound-style groove that really pushes the vocals forward tremendously – that brilliant all-in Motown mode of the best early years, where the Detroit studio was working overtime to make things sound amazing. Titles include the massive hit "Stop! In The Name Of Love" – but the whole thing's a solid effort with no filler, and other cuts include "I'm In Love Again", "He Holds His Own", "Whisper You Love Me Boy", "The Only Time I'm Happy", "Nothing But Heartaches", "Honey Boy", and "Back In My Arms Again". Love/Svart (Finland), 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
The monumental first album from Finnish legends Tasavallan Presidentti – a hell of a group, and one that was equal parts jazz and prog – and maybe one of the few who got the blend just right! The lineup is filled with some really heavyweight instrumentation – most famously from guitarist Jukka Tolonen, one of the best Scandinavian players of the time, and an artist who rose to global success – and the group also features work from Juhani Aaltonen on soprano, tenor, and flute – an artist who had equally well-respected chops in the jazz world too! The group also features lots of organ lines and bass from Mans Groundstroem, heavy drums from Vesa Aaltonen, and vocals from Frank Robson – a good singer, but one who maybe takes second place next to the guitar and reeds! Titles include "Crazy Thing Nr 2", "You'll Be Back For More", "Who's Free", "Drinking", "Driving Through", "Wutu Banale", and "Roll Over Yourself". CD features bonus 7" single tracks – "Time Alone With You", "Deep Thinker", "Solitary", and "Obsolete Machine". CD

ESL, 2014. Used ... $11.99
Maybe our favorite record ever from Thievery Corporation – and one that really stays true to the sound of all the styles that have inspired them! For over a decade, the duo have been playing with elements borrowed from bossa nova, old soundtracks, French pop, and lounge – but this is the first time they really take the trouble to respectfully re-present the music of their roots – with all the right modes of instrumentation and production to stand head to toe with previous legends! The feel of the record is a lot more like a Schema session than most other ESL recordings – and even more like a 60s record, too – thanks to warm acoustic instrumentation on guitar, percussion, and strings – mixed with bossa percussion, gentle keyboards, and some really great vocals from a range of different female singers. Titles include "Para Sempre", "Bateau Rouge", "Saudade", "Claridad", "Nos Dois", "Le Coeur", "Firelight", and "Decollage". CD

Philips/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
The self-titled classic by a wonderfully spooky band – a group who work in the most sinister side of the hard rock mode at the start of the 70s, all with a very heady sound that have made them legends over the years – even though this debut never got much circulation at the time! In a way, these guys could easily go head to head with early Black Sabbath at most points – but they also have a way of changing things up, varying the mood in really great ways that make the most of the lead vocals of Keith Bonsor – a singer whose sensitivity is underscored by great work on organ and flute at points too – which temper the fiercer guitar work of John Truba and create a lot of depth in the record. Titles include "New Land", "Now I'm Sad", "Quabala", "I Was Fooling", "Love's Desire", "Give Me Love", "Rolling Thunder", and "Before My Eyes Go Blind". Holiday Inn/Rock Star, Early 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
The Holiday Inn chain of motels was first launched in Memphis during the city's rockabilly years, and an early investor was Sam Phillips of Sun Records – so it's maybe no surprise that the company also hosted a small record label of its own – a short-lived imprint that's a treasure trove of rare Memphis music! This set brings together all the great early singles on the imprint – both a-sides and b-sides, with a blend of instrumental rockers, soulful pop, and rockabilly – much of which was handled by Phillips at the Sun Studios! Most of the names here aren't Memphis legends, but the music definitely lives up to the rare 45s from that city's scene at the time – and in addition to a rare single here by Charlie Feathers, the package also includes work from Buck Griffin, Jimmy Foster, The Roller Coasters, Stony Martin, Jimmy Foster, Joe Fuller, and others – plus two Holiday Inn jingles too! Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Funky nuggets galore – and a fair bit of righteous numbers too – all brought together in celebration of one of the hippest record labels of the early 70s! Flying Dutchman was around for just a bit over five years – yet during that time, the label recorded all sorts of really wonderful music – a mixture of jazz, soul, funk, and other styles that really helped push the envelope at the time – as it took the torch from older labels like Impulse or Prestige, and really continued a big wave of new sounds and groovily experimental music! You'll no doubt recognize some of the cuts here – but the collection does a great job of digging deeper past the Flying Dutchman hits – bringing together some real surprises that showcase the way that the company was trying so many cool things at once, and creating music that's still the stuff of legends many years later. Titles include "Head Start" by Bob Thiele Emergency, "Peaceful Man" by Esther Marrow, "Mama Soul" by Harold Alexander, "Soulful Strut" by Steve Allen, "Heavy Soul Slinger" by Pretty Purdie, "Echoes" by Leon Thomas, "See Saw Affair" by Cesar, "Expansions" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Bolivia" by Gato Barbieri, "125th Street & 7th Ave" by Oliver Nelson, "Whitey On The Moon" by Gil Scott-Heron, "Echoes" by Leon Thomas, and "Lament For John Coltrane (take 1)" by Bob Thiele.
