Blue NotesBlue Notes Legacy – Live In South Afrika 1964 ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1964. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A much-needed look at the early sound of The Blue Notes – a performance right before they left South Africa, and with a nicely different sound than some of their later London performances issued on the Ogun label! The group here are already very much in their own sound and spirit, but with less of the free improvisation of the 70s – more some of the rhythmic modes you'd know from other South African jazz of the period, but mixed with the kind of complexity you'd hear in a Charles Mingus record – all sorts of of amazing arrangements that are peppered with really wonderful solos from the members of the sextet! The lineup is different than the quartet and quintet dates of the following decade – with tenor saxophonist Nick Moyake working alongside Dudu Pukwana on alto, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Chris McGregor on piano, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Luis Moholo on drums. The set features a range of great modern jazz compositions by the players – including "Coming Home", "Two For Sandi", "Dorkay House", "B My Dear", "Vortex Special", and "Now". CD

ClashLondon Calling (Legacy Edition)(2CD & DVD) ... CD
Epic, Late 70s. Used 2CD & DVD ... $22.99
Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". Count Basie OrchestraLegend, The Legacy ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1989. Used ... $4.99
The Basie Orchestra pays tribute to their departed Count – and the groove here is every bit the sort you'd expect from the ensemble at their height! Frank Foster's in the lead with the group at this point, and he's definitely back in the Basie bag, after stretching out soulfully on his own in the 70s – guiding players who include Eric Dixon, Danny Turner, and David Glasser on reeds; Sonny Cohn, Byron Stripling, and Mike Williams on trumpets; Bill Hughes, Mel Wanzo, and Clarence Banks on trombones; and rhythm from Carl Ace Carter on piano, Cleveland Eaton on bass, and Duffy Jackson on drums. Carmen Bradford sings a bit, and titles include "Papa Foss", "Bring On The Raindrops", "Katherine The Great", "Whirly Bird", and "The Count Basie Remembrance Suite". CD

Roy EldridgeLittle Jazz (Jazz Legacy) ... LP
Inner City, 1950. Near Mint- ... $6.99
There's nothing little about the talents of Roy Eldridge on the trumpet – as you'll hear in this hip set of tracks from the start of the 50s – material recorded in Paris with help from some great American sidemen! Half the tracks feature Roy's trumpet in a quintet with Zoot Sims on tenor, Dick Hyman on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Ed Shaughnessy on drums – grooving in the relaxed, swing-based style that you'd expect from Eldridge's 50s work on Verve. Roy sings just a bit on the set – scatting alongside the lead vocals from Anita Love on a version of "It Don't Mean A Thing" – and singing a duet with Anita on the R&B-ish "Ain't No Flies On Me". Other tracks include "King David", "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams", and "The Man I Love". Remaining tracks are also from Paris in June of 1950 – and feature Gerry Wiggins on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on instrumental tunes that include "Wild Driver", "Easter Parade", "If I Had You", "Nuts", and "Goliath Bounce". Femi Kuti/Made KutiLegacy + (Stop The Hate/Foreward) ... CD
Partisan, 2021. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 16.99
Two generations of the Fela Kuti legend work here back to back – in a double length set that features one full album from Fela's son, and another by his grandson! Femi is up first on a set titled Stop The Hate – full-on Afro Funk with plenty of message in the music – the older Kuti in the lead on vocals, trumpet, alto, and organ – getting superb backup from a full horn section over lots of heavy rhythms! At times, Femi almost seems as instrumentally great as Fela – and his vocals are often a bit more pointed, with a stronger global attempt to get the message out – on titles that include "As We Struggle Everyday", "Stop The Hate", "Land Grab", "Privatization", "Show Of Shame", "Young Boy Young Girl", and "You Can't Fight Corruption With Corruption". Made Kuti follows up in a similar spirit, but in a slightly different way – as the singer also handles all the other instrumentation on his set – almost coming across like a large Afro Funk ensemble by himself, thanks to the magic of the studio! Made plays drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, and tenor, alto, and baritone saxes – but you'd hardly think the album's a one man show, as the sound is full and rich – every bit the blend of heavy rhythms and politics as Femi's record. Titles include "Hymn", "Young Lady", "Different Streets", "Blood", "Your Enemy", "Free Your Mind", and "We Are Strong". CD

Columbia, 1978. Very Good ... $3.99
An overlooked gem from Ramsey's 70s years at Columbia – a record that has him grooving over larger arrangements, sweeping along in a great blend of soul and class that makes for some really great numbers! Side one of the album features Ramsey playing keyboards on the extended "Legacy" suite – a long piece composed and conducted by James Mack, which has Ramsey running through a lot of different moods and modes – some of them nice and funky! Side two features some nice shorter tracks – all electric groovers with plenty of funky keys! Titles include "Moogin On", "Don't Look Back", "Well Well Well", and "All The Way Live". Jamila WoodsLegacy Legacy (with download) ... LP
Jagjaguwar, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $20.99 24.99
Jamila Woods already blew us away with her debut – but this second set has the singer ready to take on the world with a huge step forward in her style! Jamila caught us almost by surprise when she first emerged – a Chicago soul singer who wasn't on our radar, and who already had this fully-formed, completely unique style – but here, she embraces legacies of past musical and cultural inspirations, folding them into a instrumental settings created almost completely on her own, and which are topped by these shape-shifting lyrics that really live up to their references. The album shows a powerful, personal, and completely self-contained approach to the music – something that many of Jamila's contemporaries can hardly match – and titles include "Miles", "Baldwin", "Basquiat", "Eartha", "Giovanni", "Zora", "Betty", "Frida", "Sun Ra", and "Octavia". Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Really great work from the Kent/Modern family of labels on the LA scene of the 60s – a company that initially broke big during the postwar years of R&B, but continued to record a huge amount of wonderful artists as the years went on! Because of their ties to R&B in the previous decade, Kent also had a great ear for the deeper side of soul music – so there's plenty of tracks on this set that may well have come from Memphis, Muscle Shoals, or other points south – mixed in with others that have a cool Cali vibe, including a few great early funk tracks, and some crossover gospel gems! The collection is the sort that Ace does the best – and is filled with rare singles, unreleased tracks, and other gems – all supported by very detailed notes. Titles include "At Last" by Jimmy bee, "Where She Att" by ZZ Hill, "Like I Do" by Bobby John, "Don't Believe Him" by Stacy Johnson, "Mighty Clouds Of Joy" by BPS Revolution, "Nobody But Me" by The Other Brothers, "Ghetto Child" by Johnny Copeland & His Soul Agents, "What Is This World Coming To" by Charles Taylor, "Jodine" by Earl Foster, "It's Getting Late" by Al King, "Whole World Down On You" by Larry Davis, "The Good Side Of My Girl" by Clay Hammond, "I'll Be Standing By" by Chuck Walker & The VIPs, "You're Still My Baby" by Venetta Fields, and "Rock Me Baby" by Millie Foster. ✨✧ James Leary with Joe HendersonTogether (Legacy/bonus tracks) ... CD
Life Force Jazz, 1980/1990s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent set of material from the Bay Area bassist James Leary – a package that brings together one rare album, and a whole host of unreleased recordings as well! The core album is Legacy – originally issued on the tiny Blue Collar label at the start of the 80s, and a wonderful set that features plenty of tenor work from Joe Henderson – a really much-needed document of Joe's tremendous sound during this under-recorded period of his career – and very heavy in those sharp, dark tones he used on the Mirror Mirror album! The rest of the group is great – a core combo with George Cables on piano, Eddie Marshall on drums, and Kenneth Nash on percussion – augmented by some larger backings at times, but always in a relatively subtle way that preserves the energy of the core. Titles from that session include "Twenty Five/Mister X", "Remember To Smile", "Today's Song", "So Far So Good", "Legacy", and "Wajumbe". CD also then features 90s recordings made by Leary with some mighty hip players in the southern Cali scene – a shifting lineup that features vocals from Dwight Trible on two numbers, plus trumpet from James Smith, tenor from George Harper, and piano from Eric Reed. Titles include "Song For My Mother", "Little Birds", "Come & Talk", "Together", and "Expose". CD

Back in the day, we never would have thought that the film Tron would have had such a great revival in the 21st Century – but then again, we also might never have guessed that a group like Daft Punk would make the movie sound so great! At some level, the 80s retro fusion of the film is the perfect setting for Daft Punk – as it allows them to really play well with all their classic keyboard styles, while also pushing things with a nice sense of drama too – really surprising us when the larger orchestrations bring just the right touch to the electric elements at the core. Titles include "Solar Sailer", "Disc Wars", "Rectifier", "Outlands", "Rinzler", "Arena", "Armory", "The Son Of Flynn", "Arrival", "CLU", and "Derezzed". 2LP version features a full side of bonus material too! Ace/Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Searing, sneering work from the Cali scene of the late 60s – a surprisingly huge legacy of work that goes far beyond some of the bigger west coast garage gems by acts like The Seeds or Sonics! The cuts here all come from LA indie labels Dore, Era, and Mira – companies that we mostly know for soul and pop recordings of the time, but who also cut some really fantastic rockers that you'll discover in this set – really raw tracks that have a pre-punk, hard-edged grit that's really surprising – a very different vibe than some of the sunnier acts you might normally associate with California in the 60s! There's not a hippie in the bunch, and we're betting that none of these folks know how to surf, either – just get in the garage, turn up the amps, and cook up this smoking set list of 25 tunes that include "Leave Me Behind" by South Hampton Story, "The Thief" by The Motion, "So What" by The Lyrics, "My Baby's Barefoot" by The Syndicate, "I'll Blow My Mind" by Spencer's Van Dykes, "It's No Use" by Basil & the Baroques, "Shame" by The Front Page & Her, "Now You Say We're Through" by The Puddin Heads, "Big City Blues" by Simon T Smokes, "She's Gone" by The Tormentos, "Just Wanna Be Myself" by The No Na Mes", and "The Other Half" by Yesterday's Tomorrow. ✨✧ Miles DavisRound About Midnight (2CD Legacy edition) ... CD
Columbia, 1956. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Thelonious Monk may have written the title tune, but Miles Davis makes it all his own here – blowing with a subtle moody magic that makes the album one of his true treasures from the early Columbia Records years! John Coltrane's along on tenor sax – helping Davis expand the sound the pair first forged on Prestige – and also present is the rhythm trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – impeccably recorded here with a wonderful sense of space, and almost a bridge between older Miles modes, and the genius to come. Titles include Miles seminal take on "Round Midnight", plus "Tadd's Delight", "Dear Old Stockholm", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "A Leu Cha". A great little record from the days before George Benson had totally hit his smooth jazz sound of the 70s, and was being pushed by Columbia as a hard wailing soul jazz leader! The record features his classic quartet with Lonnie Smith on organ – grooving away hard hard hard, sometimes even harder than George! Benson's fresh off his work with the Jack McDuff quartet, and his style's nice and lean, with some good riffs, and a very tight approach to the strings. Dave Brubeck & Jimmy RushingBrubeck & Rushing (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1960. Used ... $6.99
One of the coolest collaborations of Dave Brubeck's years at Columbia Records – and one of the greatest jazz sessions from vocalist Jimmy Rushing too! On paper, the modernist Brubeck and Kansas City roots singer Rushing would seem to be a very unlikely pair – but by this time in his career, Jimmy had gotten extremely inventive and was very open to new ideas – and manages to lend his amazing vocals to some sublime instrumental backdrops from the Brubeck quartet! Dave unlocks a whole host of bluesy tones for the session, and really matches Rushing's energy – and Paul Desmond's alto sounds somewhat unusual in that setting, but with a real appeal too – a very unusual sound for a record like this. Titles include "There'll Be Some Changes Made", "My Melancholy Baby", "Blues In The Dark", "I Never Knew", "Ain't Misbehavin", "Evenin", "All By Myself", "River Stay Way From My Door", "You Can Depend On Me", and "Am I Blue". A key point in the development of the Miles Davis sound of the 60s – his first album to feature work from Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – augmented by some equally nice work on other tracks from Victor Feldman and Frank Butler! The sound here is beautifully spare – a wonderful exploration of ideas that Miles had been putting forth on some other albums for Columbia, but crafted here with a vision that's apparent in the very first note – and which transforms both the tunes and the work of the players into a focused, near-perfect sound all the way through. Columbia/Legacy, 1967. New Copy ... $4.99 7.99
Another bold new direction for the legendary Miles Davis Quintet of the 60s – a set that has some of the angular styles of earlier albums, but also a bit more of the flowing grace to come in the electric years! A key illustration of this is the leadoff track "Prince Of Darkness" – which has a fluid sensibility that still never fails to floor us, even all these many decades later! The rest of the tracks are equally great – even when subtle – and by this point, the group of Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams were well earning their acclaim as one of the most groundbreaking groups in jazz. Titles include "Prince Of Darkness", "Masqualero", "The Sorcerer", "Pee Wee", and "Vonetta" – plus the odd inclusion of a vocal version of "Nothing Like You" – recorded 5 years before with singer Bob Dorough and arranger Gil Evans! The tune's an odd cap to this otherwise cohesive set – but we love it plenty too, and it somehow oddly fits! CD reissue features alternate takes of the tracks "Masqualero" and "Limbo"! CD

Rare work from a time in Bob Dylan's career when he was maybe giving us too few albums – which makes all the rare material here a great addition to his early 80s run of records on Shot Of Love, Infidels, and Empire Burlesque! The tracks here all come from sessions for those records – which were often stretched out a fair bit, and feature Dylan working through lots of new ideas as he puts the songs together – which you can really hear here on the unreleased material that's presented here for the first time ever! Titles include "Need A Woman (rehearsal)", "Fur Slippers (outtake)", "Jokerman (alt take)", "Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight (alt take)", "Blind Willie McTell (outtake)", "New Danville Girl (outtake)", "Dark Eyes (alt take)", "Too Late (band version outtake)", "Sweetheart Like You (alt take)", "Seeing The Real You At Last (alt take)", and "Someone's Got Ahold Of My Heart (outtake)". 2LP set features 11 unreleased tracks!) Duke EllingtonEllington Uptown ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1952. Used ... $6.99
One of Duke Ellington's standout sides for Columbia – a strong recording that revisits many of the best elements of his earlier work, and offers up some more sophisticated scoring for the 50s – thanks to extended track length in the LP generation! The tunes here are older ones, but they're taken to some nicely hip territory – thanks to Duke's strong ear for modern changes, and a line up of players that includes Billy Strayhorn on piano, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Clark Terry and Ray Nance on trumpets, Juan Tizol on trombone, and Louis Bellson on drums. Bellson does a great job on the classic "Skin Deep" – a real showcase for his talents in this recording – and other titles include "The Mooche", "Take The A Train", and "Perdido" – plus a 13 minute reading of "A Tone Parallel To Harlem (aka The Harlem Suite)". Legacy, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
Mindblowing lost work from Jimi Hendrix – studio tracks from the late 60s that were never issued at the time, brought together to make a completely sublime full length set! The package is way hipper and stronger than you might imagine – not studio snippets or replayed outtakes – but instead some strong full longs, and rare studio recordings of material that Jimi had mostly given the world in a live setting – all recorded between 1968 and 1970, and almost all issued here for the first time ever! The core group on most tracks is the trio with Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass – but the tracks also feature some surprising guests – including a bit of organ and vocals from Stephen Stills, tenor from Lonnie Youngblood, and guitar from Johnny Winter. One tracks features Jimi just duetting with Miles on drums – and there's another that even features Hendrix on vibes. Titles include "Sweet Angel", "$20 Fine", "Power Of Soul", "Jungle", "Cherokee Mist", "Send My Love To Linda", "Woodstock", "Mannish Boy", "Lover Man", "Hear My Train A Comin", "Georgia Blues", "Stepping Stone", and "Things I Used To Do". A legendary set of live performances from Jimi Hendrix – both sets recorded in Maui in July of 1970, presented here officially for the first time ever – along with a bonus documentary on the performances too! The set is kind of the true counterpart to the botched Rainbow Bridge project – and features Jimi with Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums – really stepping out on some extended tracks that are filled with searing solos, and that undeniable charisma of Hendrix on stage – still wonderful, even near the end. Titles include "Hear My Train A Comin", "Fire", "Dolly Dagger", "Ezy Rider", "Message To Love", "Lover Man", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Purple Haze", "Red House", "Hey Baby/Midnight Lightning", "Straight Ahead", "Stone Free", "Jam Back At The House", and "Freedom". Billie HolidayBillie Holiday – Remixed & Reimagined ... LP
Legacy, 2007. Near Mint- ... $59.99
Billie Holiday's probably reimagined here more than she's remixed – as most of the tracks are heavy on contemporary beats and breaks first, and tend to focus on the vocals second! Billie's older recordings are dropped into the mix to provide a bit of older flavor – sometimes used quite sparingly, sometimes a bit more in the spirit of the original songs – but still usually in a way that has the remixer emerg as the main star on each track. Titles include "All Of Me (Charles Feelgood & Gil rmx)", "Glad To Be Unhappy (DJ Logic rmx)", "Billie's Blues (Daniel Y rmx)", "You're So Desirable (Sunday People rmx)", "I Hear Music (Swingsett & Takuya's Mighty Fine rmx)", "Spreadin Rhythm Around (Lady Bug vs Lady Day RR rmx)", and "Travlin All Alone (Nickodemus & Zeb rmx)". Philadelphia International/Legacy, 1970s. Sealed ... $16.99
A beautifully-done collection of work from The Intruders – a brilliant package that follows the group from early harmony days into some of their more sophisticated grooves for Philly International in the 70s! The Intruders have a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a sound that's sweet, but which has a kind of rasp at the back too – a really human, almost hesitating quality to the vocals that makes just about anything they do come out sounding wonderful. The set begins with early singles for the Gamble label, then runs up to a few key album cuts from the 70s – titles that include "Love Is Like A Baseball Game", "Slow Drag", "When We Get Married", "Mother & Child Reunion", "United", "Together", "I'll Always Love My Mama (part 1)", "I Wanna Know Your Name", "Sad Girl", "She's A Winner", "A Nice Girl Like You", "Plain Ol Fashioned Girl", and "To Be Happy Is The Real Thing". Willie NelsonRed Headed Stranger (remastered edition) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1975. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
Willie's finest hour! The Nashville establishment was as horrid in the 70s as it is today, with glitzy, soulless, committee-thought pop garbage ruling the scene – so Willie, who had ironically been a hit songwriter for a decade packed it up for Austin and churned out the spare, haunting and wholly unique Red Headed Stranger in a couple of days. The LP was a huge commercial and critical success, with everyone up to and including Miles Davis singing its praises. Red Headed Stranger didn't change the world the way its champions hoped – Nashville is still pretty much an aesthetic hell hole. But the record will live on forever, and it's a crucial addition to anyone's collection who cherishes pure individualistic music that was fortunate enough to find popular success. Titles include "I Couldn't Believe It Was True", "Red Headed Stranger", "Just As I Am", "Denver", "Remember Me", "Hands On The Wheel", "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" and much more. CD

A brilliant bit of psychedelia – still as fresh today as it was many decades back – and the crowning achievement of Pink Floyd during the early Syd Barrett years! The album's got all the best elements of the group firmly in place – the penchant for long-jamming tracks that still manage to always maintain a sharp edge – mixed with some of the wittier, more playful lyrics that Barrett brought to the group – all wrapped up with a sense of depth and darkness that goes way beyond most of their contemporaries. The record's a masterpiece through and through – from its first guitar-heavy jam on "Astronomy Domine", through the strutting, vamping madness of "Bike" – all up and down other gems that include "Lucifer Sam", "The Gnome", "Take Up Thy Stethoscope & Walk", "Interstellar Overdrive", "Chapter 24", and "The Scarecrow". PrinceWelcome 2 America ... CD
NPG/Legacy, 2010. New Copy ... $8.99 13.98
A really fantastic album from Prince – recorded in 2010, and unreleased at the time – but clearly one of the greatest things he gave us in the final decade of his life! This isn't uncooked demo material, or under-thought studio tracks – and instead, the whole thing is a fully-formed record with a message that really comes through in the title – more political Prince than usual, with an eye for our nation that rivals Sign O The Times! It may be that back when Prince recorded the set, the time wasn't right for the message – but these tracks definitely hit home now – and are often delivered in this sinister slow funk mode that really fits the lyrics – almost as if Prince were trying to give the world his version of a righteous 70s album on Curtom Records. Titles include "Running Game", "Born 2 Die", "Welcome 2 America", "Check The Record", "Hot Summer", "Stand Up & B Strong", "Same Page Different Book", and "One Day We Will All B Free". CD

CTI/Legacy, 1978. Used ... $6.99
A real standout 70s set from Nina Simone – a one-off date for CTI Records, done with a sound that's different than her earlier work for RCA, Philips, and Colpix! The groove here is often as soul-based as it is vocal jazz – thanks to arrangements from David Matthews, who brings a similar sound here to his other work with Esther Phillips in the decade – another older singer who'd hit some very hip territory at the time. The groove here is very much like Phillips' best for Kudu – smooth and soulful, but in ways that still retain all the rasp and character of the lead vocals. Titles include a sublime reading of Randy Newman's excellent "Baltimore", plus "The Family", "My Father", "Music For Lovers", "Rich Girl", and "Balm In Gilead". CD

RCA/Legacy, Late 60s/Early 70s/2006. Used ... $7.99
A full set's worth of remixes of older Nina Simone tunes – served up hot on the heels of the big success of Simone songs from the Verve Remixed series! Ulike the Verve series, the work here is all pulled from Nina's RCA recordings of the late 60s and early 70s – some of her hippest work on record, and even better suited to this sort of modernization, given that the themes and styles of the originals were often years ahead of their time! There's a bit of a laidback feel to most of the mixes, one that sometimes diffuses the power of Nina's righteous intentions – but there's also some tracks here that are a lot more respectful of the originals than other sets of this nature. Titles include "I Can't See Nobody (Daniel Y rmx)", "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter (Jazzeem's All Styles rmx)", "Here Comes The Sun (Francois K rmx)", "Obeah Woman (DJ Logic rmx)", "Ooh Child (Nickodemus rmx)", "My Man's Gone Now (DJ Wally rmx)", "Go To Hell (Mowo rmx)", and "Save Me (Coldcut rmx)". Sly & The Family StoneLive At The Fillmore East (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Epic/Legacy, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99 37.98
Stunning sounds from Sly & The Family Stone – a searing live performance from 1968, and one that appears here for the first time ever! The music is wonderful – harder, heavier, and even funkier than some of the group's famous records from the period – and that's saying a heck of a lot, if you know the strength of those albums! Given that the group were turning out a non-stop array of great studio records at the time, we can guess that Epic records didn't have any room in their release schedule to get this one out in the 60s – but given the quality of the music, we're also surprised it took so long for the concert to get released – because it offers up a rich document of that other side of Sly and the group – that way of setting fire to a live crowd that made them such a hugely important crossover act at the time, and a key force for uniting audiences from both sides of the scene. Some tracks are nice and long, and really open up – and others are shorter and tighter, but still pack a hell of a punch – and tracks include "M'Lady", "Life", "Are You Ready", "Won't Be Long", "We Love All Freedom", "Music Lover", "Dance To The Music", "Love City", and "Turn Me Loose/I Can't Turn You Loose". A wonderful album from Sly and crew – moving way past the straight funk approach of earlier records, into a complicated crossover soul style that's filled with warmth and righteousness. Despite the political tone implied by the "riot" in the title and the co-option of the American flag on the cover, the album's strongest suit is its warmth and personal soul message – sometimes filled with politics, sure, but always sounding like a sexy love song, no matter how hard it tries to get righteous. Who cares, though – just get with the flow on great cuts like "Family Affair", "Luv N Haight", "Brave & Strong", "You Caught Me Smilin", and "Thank You For Talkin To Me Africa". A brilliant double live album by Bill Withers – different than his studio work, and every bit as essential! The album's similar to Curtis Mayfield's double live album around the same time – in that it's got Bill in front of a very enthusiastic crowd, playing in a stripped down way that creates a wonderfully intimate feel – even more so than his studio albums, with a deeply acoustic vibe! Some of the tracks here are even more soulful than their more famous versions – and Bill opens up warmly in front of the Carnegie crowd with a hip small combo behind him. Bill Withers' second album – even more wonderful than the first! The record's a perfect summation of all that made Bill so great – warm raspy vocals, sweet soulful production, mature songwriting, and just the right use of acoustic guitar to accent all the best elements in the music! Withers was already great before this record, but Still Bill really pushed him over the top – and made sure that generations to come would never tire of his genius. The arrangements are wonderful – with just the right sort of punch to hammer things home – yet still very far from commercial, and able to let all the acoustic elements of Bill's roots shine through. The record includes the massive "Lean On Me" – but we love it even more for the funky "Use Me", the slinky "Kissing My Love", the righteous "Who Is He (And What Is He To You)", and the always-great "Lonely Town Lonely Street". The long-overdue release of a set of famous soul performances – all done at the Harlem Cultural Festival in the summer of 1969 – and issued here on record for the first time ever! The festival has become something of a legend – and finally got exposure on the screen, thanks to a directorial effort by Questlove. What can we say? Yet somehow, over all the years, and all those playings, the record manages to still sound fantastic – a truly inspirational piece of music that's long deserved all the attention it gets! The legendary group on the album includes John Coltrane on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Bill Evans on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass – working with Miles in a relatively modal style, with brilliant rhythm changes and a wonderful sense of space. Killer early work from Horace Silver – and a rare non-Blue Note session from the 50s! The album's Horace's only date for Columbia, and it's got a feel that's similar to some of the Jazz Messengers' hardbop recordings for the label at the time – cooking with a soulful intensity at the bottom, yet taking off with some tremendously well-carved solos on the top! The group's an all-star ensemble that includes some of the best harbop players of the time – Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Donald Byrd and Joe Gordon on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Kenny Clarke and Art Taylor on drums – all grooving together with Horace as if they'd been backing him up for years. Titles include great originals "Silver's Beat", "Shoutin' Out", and "Hank's Tune – plus versions of "I'll Know" and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". CD

✨✧ VariousDylan, Cash & The Nashville Cats – A New Music City ... CD
Legacy, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A far-reaching, pretty incredible compilation of legendary tracks and surprising wildcard choices alike, recorded in Nashville in the late 60s and early 70s with the cream of the crop of top notch Music City studio musicians – really showing the creative dexterity of those Nashville Cats! Studious fans of music from the period know the studio musicians in Nashville were a heck of a lot more than just country music cogs in the wheel. Listen beyond the vocals and you hear the most intuitive, brilliant playing – whether they're being called to hold a steady waltz pattern or color in subtle strains of soul, or even psychedelia – and this wildly diverse set is a testament. It's titled Dylan, Cash & The Nashville Cats because so many acts clamored to record with the geniuses behind the scenes in Nashville in the wake of paradigm shifting recordings like Dylan's Blonde On Blonde, and Dylan & Cash's then surprising camaraderie, and it's also in conjunction with a great Country Music Hall Of Fame exhibit. 36 tracks on 2CDs: "Absolutely Sweet Marie" by Dylan, the sample classic "Stone Fox Chase" by Area Code 615, "Turn Around" by The Beau Brummels, "Hickory Wind" by The Birds, "Some Of Shelly's Blues" by The Monkees, "Behind That Locked Door" by Ringo Starr, "Crazy Mama" by JJ Cale, "Matchbox" by Derek & The Dominos with Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins (Live on The Johnny Cash Show), "A Six Pack To Go" by Leon Russell, "The Way I Feel" by Gordon Lightfoot, "Harpoon Man" by Charlie McCoy & The Escorts, "It Ain't Me Babe" by Johnny Cash and much more. Includes a thick booklet of notes, too – truly a top notch, worthy tribute to the unsung heroes behind the recordings! CD

✨✧ Johnny CashJohnny Cash At Folsom Prison (remastered edition) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest live albums ever, and probably THE best album Johnny Cash ever recorded, properly reissued with the original sequence restored and uncensored! In 1969 Cash had more angst than you could shake a stick at – he just kicked drugs, and he hadn't had a big hit in years, so his respectful and thoughtful empathy for the audience of inmates not only cemented his persona as the real deal, but carries an air of dizzying emotion throughout the set. Appropriately filled with his darkest tunes, Folsom is one of the few cases in which a live recording of a hitmakers catalog is stronger and more vital than the studio versions. Includes "Folsom Prison Blues", "Dark As A Dungeon", "Cocaine Blues", "25 Minutes To Go", "Orange Blossom Special", "The Long Black Veil", "Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog", "Joe Bean", plus "Jackson" and "Give My Love To Rose" featuring June Carter. 2 previously unissued songs – "Joe Bean" and "The Legend Of John Henry's Hammer". A long-overdue recognition of the blues contributions of Willie Dixon – a set that pulls him out of the indie ghetto and pushes him firmly into the mainstream with this key release on Columbia Records! Yet despite that placement, the style is nicely down home – a strong recreation of older Chicago blues modes by producer Abner Spector – one that has Willie singing versions of his classic tunes like "Back Door Man", "The Seventh Son", "Little Red Rooster", "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", and "The Same Thing". Legacy/Philadelphia International, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Billy Paul was one of the most compelling forces in 70s soul – blessed with a unique voice that was equally comfortable in the high ranges as in the low, and wholly capable of handling a number of different styles with equal skill, including mellow jazz, catchy soul, and strident uptempo dancefloor material. His work at Philly International has always been hidden behind the cut "Me & Mrs Jones" – which is a great track, but doesn't even begin to hint at the genius behind Billy's style. Fortunately, you'll get more than a good taste of Billy's skill on this set – which feature a strong batch of 14 tracks that cover a lot of the mode that Billy worked in at Philly. Titles include "Love Buddies", "Am I Black Enough For You", "Be Truthful To Me", "Billy's Back Home", "Black Wonders Of The World", "Bluesette", and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right". CD

Warner/Legacy, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Early work from Prince – really his first full fledged masterpiece! Prince ushered the 80s in with a mix of recognizable influences, but filtered through his unique sensibility – taking a new approach to funky soul – by using his own sinister blend of layered vocals, crisp rhythms, and ultra catchy songs – always capped with that unbridled, fearless sexuality that comes across right here on the cover – and which already shows that the singer is a bold new force to be reckoned with! And despite his claim of having a dirty mind, Prince uses the music to unlock the sensual souls in all of us – with tracks here that would already become calling cards for a generation – such as the unstoppable classics "Dirty Mind" and "When You Were Mine", plus "Head", "Sister", "Do It All Night", and "Party Up". An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! This self-titled album is Prince's second album, and already his vision is becoming a little more focused, and you can really hear the seeds of his later efforts – a really remarkable, unique, and fascinating record that stands up with some of his best work, and bucks all late 70s trends and cliches in pop, soul and funk! In some ways this is one of our favorite Prince records, as it has a kind of intimacy that was lacking on later sets – or maybe because the hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover" has such a mad groove! "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" has the sly sound that would run throughout the rest of Prince's better work for years to come – and Chaka Khan would later cover "I Feel for You", and hit large with it in the 80s. Also includes "Sexy Dancer", "With You" and "When We're Dancing Close & Slow". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible record – and virtually the blueprint for countless other keyboard records to come! At the height of his 70s powers, Herbie really takes off into space with this set – moving away from more commercial music, and hitting a groove that's totally righteous, totally electric, and completely mindblowing! The album's got a bit of a Headhunters vibe, but it also veers off into some very wild analogue electronics too – a mix of Fender Rhodes, clavinet, melotron, and echoplex processing – augmented by additional work on Arp from Patrick Gleeson. Other players on the set include Bennie Maupin on reeds, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and the great Buck Clarke rounds out the combo on percussion. The album only features three long tracks – "Rain Dance", "Hidden Shadows", and "Hornets" – but all of them are killers! CD

✨✧ IntrudersBest Of The Intruders ... LP
Philadelphia International/Legacy, New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Other tracks include "Listen To The Music", "If You Were There", "What It Comes Down To", and "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". CD includes bonus live version of "That Lady". CD

Paisley Park/Legacy, 1985. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mad bit of psychedelic soul from Prince – a record that sounds better and better over the years, and which stands out from most of his 80s work thanks to some really unique production and songwriting! After Purple Rain, Prince did anything but freeze up in the face of living up to such a massive crossover smash – and instead stepped sideways nicely with a fresh approach to his sound – on a record that puts the "Paisley" in Paisley Park! The album mixes core Prince funk with some nicely playful touches – hardly classic psych, but that refined version that was floating around in the mid 80s – maybe mis-named, but used to great effect here. The album's a gem through and through – and titles include"Raspberry Beret", "Paisley Park","Around The World In A Day", "America", "Temptation", "Pop Life", and "Condition Of The Heart". The amazing debut of Prince – a record that virtually snuck onto the market at the time of its release, but which has gone on to become the launching pad for one of the greatest recorded legacies in soul music! The whole thing has a really lean, stripped-down sort of sound – one that testifies to the fact that the man himself produced and performed the whole thing – almost as if Prince were up there in Minneapolis, looking at all the overblown funk ensemble and disco records of the time, and decided to throw his own hat in the ring with a great variation of the funk sound of the 70s! The lean quality puts the record in a legacy that also includes 70s work by Shuggie Otis and Timmy Thomas – but that star quality that was about to make Prince huge is already firmly in place – on titles that include "For You", "Soft & Wet", "Crazy You", "Just As Long As We're Together", "My Love Is Forever", "I'm Yours", "So Blue", "In Love", and "Baby". Wonderful live work from Prince – the only official concert album ever issued by the man during his life, and a great testament to the way that his genius kept on burning bright on stage – even when he wasn't always knocking it out of the park in the studio! There's a fair bit of material here from later years, but also some classics mixed into the set – and the work often emphasizes the jazzier side of Prince's style – partly through his evolved musicianship, but also in the way the tunes come together with an even more sophisticated vibe than the early years. Titles include "Rainbow Children", "Muse 2 The Pharoah", "Extraordinary", "One Nite Alone", "Wanna B Ur Lover", "Do Me Baby", "Diamonds & Pearls", "When U Were Mine", "Mellow", "1+1+1 Is 3", "Nothing Compares 2 U", and "Sometimes It Snows In April". ✨✧ Johnnie TaylorRated X-Traordinaire – Best Of Johnnie Taylor ... CD
Legacy/Columbia, Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer work from Johnnie Taylor – from the amazing period in which he reinvented himself as one of the bigger selling smooth soul acts of the 70s! Johnnie got his start as a solo act at Stax, churning out some great raw bluesy tunes that earned him more than a few hit records – but when Stax was going belly-up in the mid 70s, Johnnie made the move to Columbia, and it was one of the best he ever made! The ultimate sign of this success was the super-huge hit "Disco Lady" – a perpetual favorite on AM radio that forever earned Johnnie a place in the soul hall of fame. But way past that number (included here, by the way) – which could have led Johnnie into a cash heavy (but ultimately short) career of dancefloor records – Johnnie instead also worked on his rich talent for ballads and mellow numbers, emerging as a sophisticated singer at a level no one would have guessed from his early days. You'll hear that best on tracks like "Love Is Better In The AM " or "Your Love Is Rated X" – but you'll also get plenty of nice moments from tunes like "You're The Best In The World", "Play Something Pretty", "Right Now", and "Stop Giving People Hard Luck Stories". 16 tracks in all. A long-overdue look at the short but fantastic 60s legacy of The Artwoods – one of the coolest, hippest groups of the UK mod scene at the time – able to perfectly balance R&B inspirations and newly groovy styles! The group's named after singer Arthur Wood, brother of the legendary Ronnie Wood – and while we might be tempted to say there's a bit of early Faces/Stones vibe going on here, the group also have a sound that's very much all their own – and which explodes out wonderfully here in a full array of mid 60s music! Maki Asakawa looks as dark and moody as ever on the cover, but there's actually a few moments here that seem to have a spark of positivity – although maybe one that's just in the instrumentation and production, which seem to borrow a bit from some of the darker side of the UK spectrum at the time! In some ways, Maki might be said to be one of the original goths in music – but with her longer legacy, and varied roots, that sort of a tag would only be reductive –as you'll hear on this set.
