Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWhen I Was Young – The MGM Recordings 1967/1968 (Winds Of Change/Twain Shall Meet/Everyone Of Us/Love Is/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

Chuck BerryChuck Berry/More Chuck Berry ... CD
Chess/BGO (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A double-helping of Chuck Berry brilliance from his early years on Chess Records – music that always has way way more to offer than you might think! Sure, some of Chuck's hits are very familiar – and sure, the man could later be a bit of a parody of himself – but there's no denying the power of this early material, and the revolutionary way Chuck had of playing guitar – rooted in blues, paving the way to rock, and also opening the door to lots more funky soul in years to come! The guitar work alone is worth the price of admission, but the songs and vocals are wonderful too – and the CD features 26 titles that include "Down The Road A Piece", "Mad Lad", "Sweet Little Rock & Roller", "Anthony Boy", "Little Queenie", "Oh Baby Doll", "Confessin The Blues", "Almost Grown", "Jo Jo Gunne", "Wee Wee Hours", "Too Much Monkey Business", and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". ✨✧ Sam LazarOrgan Grooves (Space Flight/Playback/bonus tracks) ... CD
Argo/Jasmine (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A pair of Hammond jazz classics from organist Sam Lazar – back to back on a single CD, with rare bonus tracks too! First up is Space Flight – a tight batch of organ groovers with a raw R&B feel, recorded by the obscure St Louis organist Sam Lazar – with a very young Grant Green on guitar! The album's a bit different than Sam's other records for Argo – in that the tunes are all quite short, with a tight fast sound that's almost more R&B at times than jazz – a very unusual setting especially for Grant Green! The guitar is nice and loud – really racing to keep up with Lazar's fast work on the Hammond – and other members of the group include Willie Dixon on bass and Chauncey Williams on drums. Titles include "Mad Lad", "Space Flight", "Caramu", "Funky Blues", and "Big Willie". Playback is one of a few rare albums from Hammond player Sam Lazar – a lesser-known artist from the same searing generation as Baby Face Willette and Jack McDuff, but a musician who never full got his due! This record was done for the Argo side of Chess Records, and it's got a raw sound that's equal parts soul jazz and R&B – with Sam doing some great work on the keys, and the obscure tenorist Miller Brisker in the group too – a really great musician who works with lots of unique twists – and spurs Lazar onto new heights of playing, with maybe an even farther reach on the keys than his other albums. Lazar wrote most of the set, and the tracks include "Deep", "Fuzz Buzz", "S&S", "Scootin", and "Long Gone". A nice bit of soul jazz, with a deep rootsy sound all the way through! CD also features the bonus two-part 45rpm single of "Space Flight". CD

Mark MurphyMeet Mark Murphy – The Singing M ... LP
Decca, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $11.99
Pretty darn cool stuff from one of the greatest jazz singers around! This one was Mark's first album, cut a long time ago when he was a wee lad – as you'll see by the photo on the cover. The arrangements are by Ralph Burns, and they're pretty darn hip – and although the style is more traditional than some of Mark's later records, it's amazing to hear how well-developed his vocal style is even at this early age. Many of the tracks remind us of some of the harder swinging work that Murphy cut in London and Europe during the late 60s – and tracks include "I've Got Two Eyes", "You Mustn't Kick It Around", "Exactly Like You", "Give It Back To The Indians", and "Fascinating Rhythm". ✨✧ Leo ParkerRollin With Leo ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those great "never was" Blue Note sessions – recorded in the 60s, but never issued until years later – even though the label had assigned it a cover, title, and catalog number! The album was the last session by baritone sax player Leo Parker – a bop and R&B legend who sadly passed along at the young age of 36, but left a really rich legacy of music. Parker has a way with the baritone that's almost as lean as a tenorist – blowing the horn with sharp, well-placed notes that really make this session cook – somewhere in the R&B-influenced territory of Don Wilkerson's work on Blue Note. Other players include the great Dave Burns on trumpet – always a welcome presence on any date – plus Bill Swindell on tenor sax, Johnny Acea on piano, Al Lucas or Stan Conover on bass, and Wilbert Hogan or Purnell Rice on drums. Tracks include "The Lion's Roar", "Rollin With Leo", "Jumpin Leo", "Talkin The Blues", "Mad Lad Returns", and Illinois Jacquet's "Music Hall Beat". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wild CherryWild Cherry ... LP
Epic/Sweet City, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Wild Cherry may have been one-hit wonders – but MAN, what a hit! At the time of release, "Play That Funky Music" was seen as a joke on the disco movement – but all these many years later, a quick dip into this self-titled album will show you that Wild Cherry were actually the real deal – a funky combo with a hell of a way with a bassline, led by the riffing guitar and weirdly raw vocals of Robert Parissi! In a way, the group feel more like some of those blue-eyed funk combos from global scenes in the period – like Australia, Germany, or South Africa – where it maybe didn't matter so much if you lad a long legacy in indie soul, as long as you could come up with the goods. And sure, the lyrics get a bit silly at times – maybe more lifted from compressed post-glam AM rock than soulful roots – but the overall sound of the set is surprisingly funky, in a way that's maybe stronger than so many other acts who got more respect at the time. Titles include "Play That Funky Music", "Nowhere To Run", "Don't Go Near The Water", "99 1/2", "The Lady Wants Your Money", "What In The Funk Do You See", and "Get It Up". A great moment when compressed AM pop, disco rhythms, and bass heavy funk all collided at once! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bert JanschJack Orion ... LP
Transatlantic/Superior Viaduct, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A huge leap forward for the mighty Bert Jansch – and a record that's somehow even more amazing than the ones that came before! Bert's maybe even more introspective here, but also on a personal journey that takes him down musical paths that seem broader than before – almost echoing a wider range of influences on his guitar performance, yet in a way that still comes across with a uniquely pointed vibe. There's some occasional shift in the instrumentation, too – as Jansch plays banjo on the leadoff track, but with the same chilling currents as his sublime acoustic guitar – and John Renbourn joins on second guitar for a number of tracks, prefacing the pair's collaboration to come. And as with all of Jansch's genius material at this point, there's a quality that's both ancient and modern, timeless and uniquely tied to its moment – flowering beautifully on tunes that include "Jack Orion", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Nottamun Town", "Black Water Side", "Pretty Polly", and "The Gardner". Eric AlexanderGentle Ballads ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2004. New Copy (reissue)... About March 20, 2021
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". The group's a quartet, with Mike Le Donne on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and the session's recorded with impeccable sound, in the Venus Records mode. Chet BakerChet – Ballads By Chet Baker ... LP
Riverside/Craft, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... On March 5, 2021
One of a handful of late 50s albums that Chet Baker recorded for Riverside – all of which are some of his last great 50s work in the studio, before a shift in the 60s to a wider-ranging approach to his music! The style here is definitely in the "classic" Baker mode set down for Pacific Jazz – but a bit more fleshed out by the other players in the set – who seem to push a bit more personality into the tunes, and not just let Chet's trumpet dominate. The sound is soft and gentle – as you'd expect from the title – and other players include Bill Evans, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones – all bringing a bit of a New York undercurrent to the west coast Baker solo style. Titles include "How High the Moon", "It Never Entered My Mind", "If You Could See Me Now", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Time On My Hands", and "You And The Night And Music". Warm and wonderful late work from the great Andy Bey – former member of Andy & The Bey Sisters, and a singer who will forever be in our heart for his hip 70s recordings with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! This one has Bey running through a host of straighter jazz tracks – mostly Ellington numbers and standards, done in a warm intimate style that's quite a departure from his 70s work, more in the mode of his spiritual vocals of the 60s. Tracks are all done in longer versions than usual, which really lets Bey open up – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Day Dream", "If You Could See Me Now", "Willow Weep For Me", "In A Sentimental Mood", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". The Byrds seemed to always be in a state of flux, line-up wise, and that actually seems to bring out a pretty great mix of styles on their best albums. We'd put this one in that category, with titles that includes "Ballad Of Easy Rider", the country funk-flavored "Fido", the effectively tradtional "Jack Tarr The Sailor", "Oil In My Lamp", "Tulsa County", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "It's All Over Now, "Baby Blue", "There Must Be Someone (I Can Turn To)", "Gunga Din", "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" and "Armstrong, Aldrin And Collins". Vast Aire and Vordul Mega finally return as Cannibal Ox – and truth be told, it's a pretty damn solid effort, way better than most comeback efforts by early 00s indie heroes. It's been a long time since Cold Vein dominated the indie hip hop scene, and it's good to have them back in action. The Def Jux era is long gone, and rather than patch things up with El-P and try to relive past glories, the Ox wisely just move on – smartly avoiding both current trends, and touching on the chilly sci fi funk vibe of the their past without repeating themselves. Most importantly, they're sharp on the mics, and the titles include Includes "Opposite Of Desolate" fat Double AB, "Psalm 82", Sabertooth" feat Irealz & Bill Cosmiq, "Iron Rose" feat MF Doom, "Vision" faet The Quantum, "Gotham (Ox City)", "Carnivorous" feat Elzhi & Bill Cosmiq, "Water", "Harlem Knights", "The Fire Rises" and more. Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic album from this legendary British group – a bluesy rock combo who grew up in the same space as Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown, but who never fully got their due on this side of the Atlantic! The group here is a unique lineup that only recorded this one album – a trio with John Glascock on bass and Paul Hancox on drums – two players who give leader Stan Webb plenty of space in the spotlight, which means a very strong emphasis on his mindblowing work on guitar! Webb's a musician with the chops of contemporaries Eric Clapton and Peter Green, and you can definitely hear that here – and, like his contemporaries, Stan is also really taking the music way past its bluesy inspirations – using the trio to maybe bring in more of a hard rock vibe, yet never going too far in that direction either. Titles include "Daughter Of The Hillside", "Crying Won't Help You Now", "The Loser", "Telling Your Fortune", and "Poor Boy". Lady DonliEnjoy Your Life ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $26.99
The cover's got the look of a vintage set from the West African scene of the early 80s – and Lady Donli steps out here with an equally classic mode at times – but the set's also very contemporary at others, and really grabs our attention right away! The Lady's got a great style – mixing her own great vocals with rhythms that are heavy on acoustic percussion, but also have some great keyboards and other electric elements too – all nice and lean, and wrapped together with soul-drenched energy that maybe makes the set one of our favorite Afro funky titles in recent years! There's an occasional kick in the rhythms, but the tracks aren't straight club numbers either – as they really hold onto a funky core, and come together with a vibe that sets Lady Donli apart from the rest – and balance things out with some mellower numbers in English that feel more like contemporary Cali soul. The whole thing is really fresh, and with a true sort of universal soul that's so different than other records of this nature – on titles that include "Classic", "Bite The Dust", "With The Kindness", "Good Time", "Boomerang", "Answers", "Zaman Lafiya", "Around", "The Forbidden", and "Never Ending". ✨✧ Eighties LadiesLadies Of The Eighties ... LP
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1980. New Copy ... $22.99
A legendary project from Roy Ayers – and a record that's almost as in-demand as his classic Ramp album! The Eighties Ladies were a hip vocal quartet, with the soulful Sylvia Striplin on lead – and they work here in a mix of perfect Ayers-styled grooves – often using female harmonies in just the same way as Ramp, but coming across with a style that's a bit more pointed at the clubs, and very much in the same mode as Striplin's classic solo album too! Roy brings plenty of jazzy undercurrents to the set – those sinister shapes and changes that always make his music so great – and Edwin Birdsong's help with arrangements ensure that there's some suitably offbeat twists and turns, which really keeps things interesting. Titles include the classic break "Turned On To You", plus vocal and instrumental versions of "Ladies Of The Eighties", and the tracks "Tell Him", "It's Easy To Move", "I Knew That Love", "He Is Mine Forever", and "Sing Me". Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
A key 70s session from Tommy Flanagan – a record that showed that he was still one of the most fluid and soulful players of his generation! The album has Flanagan working only with the bass of George Mraz – in a drum-less format with even less structure than usual, a perfect setting for Tommy to stretch out, open up, and do his thing on the keys of the piano. There's still always a gentle swing and good focus to most tracks here – and Flanagan never gets too indulgent with the setting, even on the longer numbers. Titles include "Blue Twenty", "With Malice Towards None", "Blues For Sarka", "Star Eyes", and "They Say It's Spring". CD

Sublime minimalist experiments from Pascal Comelade – music that's kind of a more offbeat, low-fi take on the territory of Terry Riley – as Comelade performs these beautiful long lines on both piano and organ! Pascal is working here on one track with guitar from Richard Pinhas, another with trumpet from Philippe Beseme and drums from Ben Soussan, and another with guitar from G Ibanez and bass from JP Barreda – all instrumentalists used in different ways, in different shifting patterns of sound – on titles that include "A Few Reasons To Stay A Few Reasons To Split", "Schizo", and "Barcelona Tango". Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the rarest Johnny Griffin albums ever – a set recorded as a side project when Griff was working with the Clarke Boland Big Band – in a lineup that features some of the best members from that great ensemble! The style's a bit more laidback and soulful than other CBBB projects – more in the mode of Johnny's roots in Chicago during the 50s, but still inflected with some of the sharper touches he picked up during his 60s years in Europe. Other players here are all wonderful – and include Benny Bailey on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and both Kenny Clarke and Kenny Clare on drums – seemingly playing together on some tracks, which creates a nicely skittish rhythm in the set! Johnny GriffinNight Lady ... LP
EmArcy, 1964. Near Mint- ... $34.99
A rare European gem from Johnny Griffin – recorded in quartet formation with backing from the rhythm trio of the Clarke Boland Big Band! Johnny was working with the trio in the bigger group at the time, but he gets plenty of space to state his case here – stretching out on hard-bitten, almost-modern solos that are some of his most adventurous to date on record – supported strongly on the album's longish tracks by Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! There's a quality to Griffin's tone that's incredible – urgent, edgey, but never too far out – completely in command of itself, and able to run free, but without wasting at note at all – unlike some of his over-stretched European solos of later years. The set features beautiful long readings of Boland's "Night Lady" and "Old Stuff", plus Griffin's "Scrabble", and versions of "Summertime", "All The Things You Are", and "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day". Cinema Kan (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $36.99
A Japanese soundtrack from the late 60s – but one that's scored in some of the best bossa and jazzy modes that you'd find in Italian work of the time – plus maybe some of the more whimsical styles that American composers like Johnny Williams or Neal Hefti were using on their comedies during the same stretch! We don't know the film at all, but the non-stop flow of groovy tunes makes us feel as if we've already experienced the narrative – especially as some titles have very cool wordless vocals, ala some of the groovy Hugo Montenegro late 60s albums on RCA. CD features 27 titles in all – and tracks include "Nude Studio", "Fashion Show", "The Origin Of The Party", "The Next Move", "The Dance Is Fun", "Plan Success", and "The Fragrance Of The Roll Of Bills". Milestone/OJC, 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Subtle genius from Joe Henderson – a wonderfully laidback album that interweaves Latin rhythms, west coast soul jazz, and some slight electric touches – all in a mode that shows Henderson to be one of the deepest thinking players of his scene! All tracks are long and exploratory, without going too far out – and they're done here with a style that's gentler and more introspective than Henderson's first few electric records – but in a way that makes them even more complicated and deeply soulful. Players include Oscar Brashear, George Duke, Luis Gasca, Hadley Caliman, and Mark Levine – but Henderson's tenor is the main guiding force of the set – moodily exploring some wonderful space laid out on the tunes "All Things Considered", "Las Palmas", "Tres Palabras", and "Canyon Lady". A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to comeout in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all fell just right, and the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. A massive 2LP effort that include s"Voodoo Chile", "Crosstown Traffic", "Electric Ladyland", "Little Miss Strange", "Moon Turn The Tides", "Still Raining Still Dreaming" and "All Along The Watchtower". One of Billie's last recordings, and an incredibly striking batch of songs arranged by Ray Ellis with a sad, fragile ege that's perfect for the style of her later work. Billie's voice is faltering, but in a way that only makes the songs sound more personal and more compelling – and although most of the tunes on the set are standards, Billie's presentation of them completely transforms the numbers, and we can bet you'll never heard these songs the same way again after hearing this album! Although the Isley Brothers seem to be best remembered for their funky work of the 70s – which shows up again and again on compilations and soundtracks of music from the time – we've always equally loved their way with a ballad, as the group had a really sweet sound when they wanted to, perfectly formed for more intimate numbers, which they always still managed to deliver with a slight bit of rhythm under the mix. The set features mostly tracks from their glory years of the 70s – including "Hello It's Me", "Choosey Lover", "Make Me Say It Again Girl (parts 1 & 2)", "All In My Lover's Eyes", "Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love) (parts 1 & 2)", and "You're The Key To My Heart" – but it also features the big 80s quiet storm hit "Caravan Of Love", which was performed by the Isley Jasper Isley team. 14 tracks in all. Cherry Red (UK), 1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $34.99
A full package of work from the great Chaz Jankel – the keyboardist/composer who first rose to fame with Ian Dury & The Blockheads, but who went onto make some even better work on his own! Jankel's the guy responsible for the great groove on some of the best Dury classics – and when he went solo, he moved even more into funk and soul territory – drawing strongly on influences from American club, and cutting some great records that managed to cross over big on these shores! There's a relatively lean, clean sound to most of these grooves – early 80s beats and keyboards, with some nicely uncluttered vocals – but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation, which sometimes has a bit of a fusiony feel – but still that strong sense of a hook that made Chaz so great at the time, and which kept things true to form as these records moved over the course of his strong early 80s run. The set features the full albums Chas Jankel, Chasanova Questionnaire, Chazablanca, and Looking At You – plus a 12 track set of remixes and rarities – very important, as some of Jankel's work circulated most strongly on the 12" single scene of the early 80s. 48 tracks in all – titles that include "Just A Thought", "Ai No Corrida", "No 1", "3,000,000 Synths", "Questionnaire", "Thank You Very Much", "109", "Without You", "Johnny Funk", "You're My Occupation", "Am I Honest With Myself Really", and lots more cuts – plus a big booklet of notes! Sunset Blvd, Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99 21.99
If you only know Gladys Knight from her Motown classics, or her big hits of the early 70s, you'll find a huge amount to discover here – because right from the start, the lady and her group were really something special! The idea of a male/female vocal group was a bit unique in the early 60s – not completely uncommon, but never handled with the perfection of Gladys Knight & The Pips – as the mixture of Knight's richly soulful lead and the harmonies of the trio of male singers was incredible – captured very strongly by Harlem producer Bobby Robinson, with singles that appeared on his own Fire/Fury label, and Vee Jay as well! There have been other sets that bring together work from this time, but this might be the most complete we've ever seen – 40 tracks in all, with a few alternates, and a few solo tracks by The Pips as well – titles that include "Operator", "Come See About Me", "Go Away Stay Away", "Who Knows", "Walking In Circles", "Jungle Love", "Linda", "Darling", "One More Lonely Night", "Every Beat Of My Heart", "Room In Your Heart", "It Hurts So Bad", "Letter Full Of Tears", "The Devil In Me", "Daybreak", "Lovers Always Forgive", and "How Do You Say Goodbye". Gladys Knight & The PipsVisions ... CD
Columbia/Superbird (UK), 1983. Used ... $6.99
Sweet 80s groove from Gladys Knight & The Pips – just the kind of record that shows why the group kept going strong for so many years! The classic approach is still very firmly intact – Gladys' wonderful lead, soaring out over the Pips' warm harmonies – a vocal power that so many other groups could never get this right – evolved amazingly here from the early soul years of the group's origins. The approach of the set is lean and smooth, yet turns out to be a perfect fit for the maturing Knight/Pips sound – a mode that still keeps them right out in front of the pack, with a great mix of grooving and sophistication. Titles include "Save The Overtime (For Me)", "Heaven Sent", "When You're Far Away", "Just Be My Lover", "Don't Make Me Run Away", "Ain't No Greater Love", "O La De Da", "You're Number One", and the longstanding classic "Hero (Wind Beneath My Wings)". Jerry Lee LewisBallads Of Jerry Lee Lewis ... CD
Sun/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
A great set of work from Jerry Lee Lewis – material that really shows off the many-faceted levels of his genius, in a way that's different than some of the bigger hits of his early days! Sure, Jerry could be a rocker who could burn up the piano when he wanted – but he was also a skilled singer at mellower material, particularly with a country sort of tinge – really opening up some of the bluer, more melancholy modes that would really come to prominence during his great second career chapter on Mercury and Smash! These cuts, though, are from the early Sun Records sessions – material that wasn't always given strong favor by the label at the time, in deference to more chartbound rockers – collected together here in a great 27 track package that really opens up our understanding of the Jerry Lee Lewis sound. Titles include "Born To Lose", "Crazy Arms", "Invitation To Your Party", "I'm The Guilty One", "Fools Like Me", "Love On Broadway", "The Ballad Of Billy Joe", "I Know What It Means", "You Win Again", "Cold Cold Heart", "Seasons Of My Heart", and a nice duet with Charlie Rich on "Sail Away". Abbey LincolnPainted Lady (aka Golden Lady) ... LP
Blue Marge (France), 1980. Sealed Gatefold ... $24.99
A wonderfully moody album from Abbey Lincoln – one that's a bit more laidback than some of her other efforts, but no less soulful! There's kind of a broken, jagged sound to the record – a late nite vibe that's blue and melancholy, and which gets some great support from the tenor sax of Archie Shepp – which often gets a chance to solo on most tracks! The rhythms are gentle, often a bit spare – and handled by Hilton Ruiz on piano, Jack Gregg on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums – and the set also features work from trumpeter Roy Burroughs. Tracks include three original compositions, "Painted Lady", "Throw It Away", and "Caged Bird", plus a sublime version of Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady". Also includes Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady", and Michel Legrand's "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Lars Lystedt/Berndt EgerbladhFanfar (10 inch LP) ... LP
Be! (Germany), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Incredible sounds from the Swedish scene of the early 60s – a 10" album from trombonist Lars Lystedt, whose combo features work from pianist Berndt Egerbladh, who then takes over as a leader on side two! Side one is a stone cooker – tight grooves that are in the best Scandinavian hardbop mode of the time – that crisp new sound that scene ushered in at the start of the 60s – more Blue Note than some of the cooler, west coast Swedish sounds from the decade before – with some nice tenor work from Leif Hellmann, over tight rhythms from Egerbladh on piano, Ray Carlson on bass, and Sten Oberg on drums – on the titles "Fanfar", "So Dere", and "Blues On Down". Side two features Egerbladh's long "Arctic Suite" – a great cut with strong modal moments, and lots of soulful tenor from Hellman! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Shelly ManneMy Fair Lady (Contemporary) ... LP
Contemporary, 1956. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A key early entry in the "jazz meets Broadway" genre – and a record that was so successful, it went onto inspire countless imitations! Shelly Manne's working here in a lightly playful trio setting – alongside Andre Previn on piano and Leroy Vinnegar on bass, in a reading of tunes originally composed for the musical My Fair Lady. Given Manne's talent for unusual rhythms and melodic percussion, the session's got a bit of a whimsical edge that takes it way past the core compositions that most listeners already knew – into a realm that allows for much great improvisation and play with the melodies. Previn's nicely restrained on the keys, and Vinnegar adds in a good sense of bottom to the set – and titles include "Get Me To The Church On Time", "I Could Have Dance All Night", "Ascot Gavotte", "Show Me", and "With A Little Bit Of Luck". Sequel (UK), Late 50s/1996. Used ... $4.99
More classic Atlantic R&B, reissued with a great reproduction of a Clyde McPhatter cover, and 4 bonus tracks to boot! Tracks include loads of Clyde's early soulful solo cuts, like "Heartaches", "Come What May", Love Has Joined Us Together", and "Let Me Know". Hard soulful vocals, given a pop arrangment style that serves as a great platform for Clyde's unique sound. This is the best selection of his stuff that we've seen in a long time. CD

26 tracks from Clyde McPhatter's Atlantic albums Clyde and Love Ballads – a great mix of hard R&B numbers, and some mellower ballads that showcase Clyde's richly emotional style of singing, one that's on a par with his lead vocal work in The Drifters, and recorded here in a very similar mode. Titles on the set include "Bip Bam", "Rock & Cry", "Heartaches", "Come What May", "Lovey Dovey", "Try Try Baby", "The Way I Feel", "My Island Of Dreams", "A Lover's Question", "Gone", "I'm Lonely Tonight", "No Matter What", and "Love Has Joined Us Together". MFSBPhiladelphia Freedom ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A very big crossover moment for the Philly sound, and one of the biggest hits by the studio combo that drove the big Gamble/Huff hits of the 70s! The record's a great batch of smooth Philly instrumentals – not really disco, although the tracks certainly crossed over there – more uptempo soul, with the same bouncy sound heard on the vocal hits of the label – a majestic Philly International groove, carefully classy, but still damn soulful too! Includes lots of familiar cuts – like "Zach's Fanfare", "Get Down With The Philly Sound", "Brothers & Sisters", and "South Philly". LP, Vinyl record album
