Piero UmilianiGli Italiani E L'Industria (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Hardly the sort of industrial sounds you might not expect – not the noisy European mode of the 80s, nor even the sort of labor-conscious styles of the Folkways generation – and instead, a sweet batch of groovy, lively instrumentals with a strong 60s vibe – of the sort that makes us think that Italian factories must have been a pretty pleasant place to work at the time! The great Piero Umilian penned all the tunes – in the best manner of his film scores from the same time – and the music is conducted by Romolo Marcellini, for a television program that used all of the tunes – in a beautiful blend of organ lines, guitar, vibes, and other jazzy instrumentation. Titles include "Natascia", "Tempo Di Week-End", "Playtime", "Automatismo", "Microracing", "Negozi Alla Moda", "Coltura Virus", "Cibernetica", and "Rally Notturno". LP, Vinyl record album

Ed WardHistory Of Rock & Roll Vol 1 – 1920 to 1963 (hardcover) ... Book
Flatiron Books, 2016. New Copy ... $10.99 35.00
A pretty great look at the birth of rock and roll – one that starts way earlier than most other histories, and then gets into a year-by-year format of chapters during the crucial moments! Ed Ward's not above leaning on the bigger names, but also does a good job of pulling out smaller strands in the history – especially moments that might not have seemed important at the time, but which stand as hallmarks for changes taking place, and much bigger shifts to come. Ward's been a rock historian for many years on NPR – and this book is definitely a labor of love – as this first volume is over 400 hefty pages. Hardcover, with a few images. Book

✨✧ John CorbettVinyl Freak – Love Letters To A Dying Medium ... Book
Duke University Press, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible look at the format of vinyl – put together by a guy who's got one of the hippest record collections we've ever seen! John Corbett's been writing about music, art, and other formats for decades – but his real labor of love is vinyl records – a format he continued to embrace even at the height of the CD era – so much so that he talked Downbeat magazine into letting him write a special column on musical delights that had never made it to the digital format! Corbett helped plenty of music get reissued on CD himself – thanks to countless label projects – but he also always held a special place in his heart for the kinds of records that never got reissued – and those are the sorts of titles featured here – a massive run of music that runs from jazz to funk, American and European, totally obscure to completely common – presented beautifully together in this massive book! The volume doesn't just bring together Corbett's columns, but also offers up full color reproductions of all the record covers, along with a few other details too – to support efforts on dozens of artists – a huge list that includes Melvin Jackson, Bill Leslie, Black Grass, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Phil Seamen, Khan Jamal, Klaus Doldinger, The Mad-Hatters, Tommy Jones, Guy Warren, The Three Souls, United Front, Johnny Lytle, London Experimental Jazz Quartet, Paul Smoker, AK Salim, Noah Howard, Jack Wilson, and many others – a good number of whom have yet to be reissued. The book is wonderful – and Corbett's longtime declaration of being a vinyl freak is more important than ever, given the rebirth of the medium! Book is 250 pages, softcover, with color images. Book

A beautiful photography expedition into some the world's foremost vinyl collections, and interviews with the collectors! Dust & Grooves is an amazing tome for a number of reasons. Dust & Grooves creator Eilon Paz is of them – one of us, actually – and his labor of love here is completely wonderful! 400+ pages, in a heavy duty coffee table book format – with a forward by The RZA, and interviews with fellow bonafide creative heavies/record collectors Gilles Peterson, Four Tet, The Gaslamp Killer, Stones Throw/Now Again honcho Egon and many more. ✨✧ Ned DohenySeparate Oceans ... LP
Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy 2 LPs Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from Ned Doheny – an overlooked talent on the LA scene of the 70s – one who had the tightest, smoothest touches of the best of the AOR generation – but a surprising undercurrent of soul as well! Ned's got that unique blend we find in a rare few artists from the time – like Nick DeCaro on his Blue Thumb album, or the self-titled set from Batteaux – a blue-eyed groove that's polished, but surprisingly human too – perfectly balancing all the best studio modes of the period, but in a way that's hardly commercial pop at all! Doheny issued a handful of albums during the 70s – none of which ever got the support they deserved – and he also touched countless other artists with his work. This excellent set brings together work from Ned's albums on Columbia and Elektra, plus some rare demo tracks too – with full notes that finally give Doheny his due, in the best Numero style. Titles include "Get It Up For Love", "On & On", "Fineline", "Each Time You Pray", "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me", "A Love Of Your Own", "The Devil In You", "Standfast", "I Know Sorrow", and "Labor Of Love". Great girl-based punk from the Portland scene of the late 70s – an overlooked quartet who really sound tremendous here in a massive double-length set of tracks! The music is stark and spare – and has a quality that almost makes us feel like we've found a pile of lost Rough Trade singles from the time – music that's not really the same as most American groups of the time, but which has this special sensibility and a subtle sort of wit. Instrumentation is pretty conventional – in a punk rock sort of way – but that's also the appeal of the record, too! Titles include "Abnormal Chick", "Empty My Head", "Kids", "Put A Penny Pin", "Obscure Emotion", "Someday Maybe", "Time Keeps Time", "Cheap Labor", and "Broken Mirror". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Arthur BlytheElaborations/Light Blue/Put Sunshine In It ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – brought together in a 2CD set! First up is Elaborations – a beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! The album's a great summation of all the ideas that reedman Arthur Blythe was cooking up in the 70s underground – performed here with a hip group that includes Blythe on alto, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bobby Battle on drums, Bob Stewart on tuba, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Mohammad Abdullah on congas – some of them players who you might never have expected to be recording for Columbia Records! And yet the setting of the record doesn't interfere with their creativity at all – and instead, really seems to give Blythe and the group the sort of focus that only makes their ideas even better – on titles that include "Elaborations", "Metamorphosis", "Sister Daisy", "Shadows", and "The Lower Nile". Light Blue is a wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". Put Sunshine In It is a record that really seems to live up to its title – as the sound here is maybe a little bit sunnier than on some of Arthur Blythe's previous albums! The record features heavy contributions from Todd Cochran – aka Bayete – who plays keyboards on most numbers, and introduces more of an electric vibe to the album than previous Blythe outings. The style isn't entirely fusion, but it's definitely warm and sunny – and Arthur responds as such with his solo work – a tight tighter and less edgey, but still nicely soulful. The album features a nice remake of the tune "Sentimental Walk" – from the movie Diva – plus the tracks "Uptown Strut", "Silhouette", "Put Sunshine In It", and "Tumalalumah". CD

Sweet electric jazz from 70s Poland – a really tripped-out set of keyboard tunes, almost an Eastern European take on the Herbie Hancock sound of the time! The group's led by keyboard maestro Janusz Grzywacz – who works here on Fender Rhodes, acoustic piano, and a Roland 2000 – hitting styles that range from straight and funky to electric and spacey – as much concerned with the overall sound of the set as with his own spirited solo work – and coming across with a soulful sound that's almost George Duke-ish at times! ✨✧ Dee AlexanderWild Is The Wind ... CD
Blujazz, 2008. Used ... $9.99
Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. Titles include versions of two tunes by AACM member Henry Huff – "Live" and "You & I" – plus the Alexander originals "Long Road Ahead", "Rossingnol", "Butterfly", and "C U On The Other Side". CD

Ammons' tenor is tremendous, but he's also a great collaborator here, too – working with Idrees Suliman on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Mal Waldron on piano, Art Taylor on drums, Doug Watkins on bass, and Ray Barretto on conga – in a mode that's maybe slightly tighter than some of the blowing sessions Prestige was doing at the time, but which still has that key longform creative energy that made the hardbop generation so great. It's been years since we've last heard from Laurie, and she's really returned to her roots here – still using her voice a bit, but also playing violin a fair bit too, along with keyboards, samples, percussion, and lots of her unusual filters and other electronic elements. 17 North Parade (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
A classic compilation – and we can't get enough of Horace Andy's sweet falsetto keening over these chugging, fat rhythms! A tremendous set of sides Andy cut in the mid-70s, packaged together with a few of the cuts in dub versions – all from a period when Horace was really hitting new heights in his music. While Andy cut many seminal sides for Coxsonne Dodd's Studio One – this work, some of it in collaboration with the great Bunny Striker Lee, stands among his best – and also often features Horace with firm creative control. Here he reworks the Studio One classic "Skylarking" as a "Better Version" with Lee, and there's a number of pieces cut at Tubby's with the aid of Prince Jammy (who contributed a nice sound to the In the Light set, also issued by Blood & Fire), like the massive "Pure Ranking" in it's full 8+ minute 12" disco mix version. Also includes the "Dub Vibes" version of the title track, "Mr Bassie", and "Reggae Rhythm – It's Gone International". CD

Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! The bonus tracks are "Jon" and "Don". CD

Joe Armon Jones sings and plays lots of cool Wurlitzer electric piano on this gem of an album – but the whole thing is maybe even more of a tribute to the warmly collaborative spirit of the contemporary London scene, as it is to the talents of the man himself! There's a nicely fluid sense of stardom here – as differing artists get their time to shine in the spotlight while others recede a bit from track to track – but not in the kind of "leader with guests" version of older soundsystem albums – and instead maybe more as a cosmic vision for the future. Other singers include Asheber, Big Sharer, Ego Ella May, and Oscar Jerome – and musicians include Dylan Jones on trumpet, Moses Boyd on drums, and Nubya Garcia and James Mollison on tenor. Polydor, 1981. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Roy Ayers in a very Afro-styled mode – working here on his own after a famous collaboration with Fela Kuti – in a set that's filled with the same sort of hard-driving Afro-Funk grooves that you'd find in Fela's classic recordings! The songs are shorter than Fela's, and with more of Roy's usual smooth jazzy production style – but the overall influence is very much in the Afro-Funk vein, and the album's sort of a "part 2" to the Music Of Many Colors set that was cut a few years before. William Allen worked on the record with Roy – playing choppy Afro-Funk bass, and arranging and producing a lot of the material with Roy and Jaymz Bedford – and the record also features a host of extra percussion players, as well as some vocals by the lovely Sylvia Striplin. Includes the great groover "Africa, Center Of The World", plus "The River Niger", and a great remake of "Third Eye", which was on Everybody Loves The Sunshine, but is redone here with a heavier sound! Other tracks include "There's A Masterplan", "I'll Just Keep Trying", and "Destination Motherland". LP, Vinyl record album

Benjamin handles all the sax solos, and composed the music as well – but the set's a very collaborative effort, and is filled with strands of soul and hip hop as well – a nicely gritty blend of the elements that avoids any of the hoke you'd find on a major label project of this nature, cooked up in the studio in North Jersey! The album cover oddly doesn't list song titles – but we can tell you that there's a total of 13 tracks in all – which makes for a very solid record. CD

Fontana, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A great collaboration between Oscar Brown Jr. and the breezy Brazilian singer Luiz Henrique! Henrique was one of Brown's "discoveries", as was Sivuca, who also plays and arranges on the LP – gracing it with his classic bossa/jazzy kind of groove. The whole thing's an excellent mix of Brown's raw vocal style with Henrique's light lilting Brazilian one – and the record's a lost crossover of styles that totally bears a new listen! Cuts include loads of originals, either by the individual members or written in collaboration. With "Listen to Me", "Finding a New Friend", "Barra Limpa", "Nothin' But a Fool", and "Dawn Comes Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Brown & Milt JacksonRay Brown/Milt Jackson ... LP
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A really hip record from the team of bassist Ray Brown and vibist Milt Jackson – a swinging large group record that has them fronting arrangements from Oliver Nelson and Jimmy Heath! Nelson and Heath are both mighty hip cats at this point in their career – and bring a soulful swing to the record that really takes off – a groove that's lively, but tuned with lots of cool colors and tones too – shifting effortlessly while things move forward – but always with the right soulful appeal for older fans of both leaders. Milt's especially great in this setting – even more on fire than some of his other collaborations with Brown – and titles include "Dew & Mud", "Lined With A Groove", "Lazy Theme", "In A Crowd", and "Now Hear My Meaning". Philips (Brazil), 1972. New Copy ... About May 25, 2018
If you've ever been wondering which album to get by Chico Buarque – this is it! The record's a stunning batch of sophisticated sides, done in collaboration with Roberto Menescal, and with help from Jobim and MPB4! The album builds on the style of Buarque's excellent late 60s songwriting, and adds in some of the more complicated approaches to arrangement that were being developed in Brazil at the end of the 60s – in a way that pushes Chico's work to the next level, and which makes this record sit right up there with work at the time by Jobim or Edu Lobo. Titles include "Samba De Orly", "Valsinha", "Acalanto", "Deus Ilhe Pague", and "Construcao". Really beautiful – with a lot of soul, and a great sound! CD

Princeton University, 2014. New Copy ... $11.99 50.00
American cities were going through tremendous changes in the 60s and 70s – changes that not only had an impact on local citizens, businesses, and municipal forces – but also on the art community as well! This book showcases a tremendous response to urban upheaval by artists in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles – presenting images of artworks created during the decades, and also photographic documents of performances, demonstrations, and other creative activities – sometimes juxtaposed against mainstream media, and balanced with a huge amount of text by the authors. The range of material in here is tremendous – the Chicago section alone is mindblowing – and the book also features contributions from other writers who include Paula Massood, Josh Glick, Eric Avila, Max Page, Leslie Wilson, and others. The book is 271 pages, with color and black and white images throughout – and was done in collaboration with the Princeton Art museum. Book

Butcher BrownLive At Vagabond ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
A pretty full-on group from the Virginia scene – one that comes on strong with a mix of funky drums, fuzzy guitar, bumping bass, and some great work on trumpet and keyboards! The groove here is almost a psychedelic take on jazz funk from years back – filtered into a very contemporary space, too – almost post-Medeski Martin & Wood, although nothing like that group at all – just in the kind of space that the new freedoms of recent years have opened up! In other words, these guys are pretty funky, but also not slavishly so – especially in any sort of retro mode – and although they're playing live here, there's an electric crackle to the whole proceedings that further ties their collaborative energy together. Titles include "Tunnelvision", "Moses", "Cairo", "Tomahawk", "Lysol", and "Forest 2.0". CD

✨✧ Henry Butler & the Steven Bernstein Hot 9Viper's Drag ... CD
Impulse, 2014. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest records that Henry Butler has cut in a long long time – and a set that really takes us back to the most inventive sounds he gave us during his first few years of recording! The album's a collaboration with trumpeter Steven Bernstein – who brings a lot of modern inflections to an older New Orleans groove – with a style that's hardly trad jazz, despite the group's name and song selection – and which instead bristles with a rich sound that's constantly reinventing itself! There's definitely some older Nola elements in the music, but the overall structure of the songs is quite unique – and brings out the best in performances by artists who include Peter Apfelbaum and Michael Blake on tenor and soprano sax, Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, Matthew Munisteri on guitar, and Doug Wieselman on clarinet. Bernstein handled most of the arrangements – and also plays slide trumpet next to a conventional version of the instrument – and titles include "I Left My Baby", "Some Iko", "Gimme A Pigfoot", "Viper's Drag", "Dixie Walker", and "Henry's Boogie". Kilmarnock, 1973. New Copy ... $7.99
A wonderful little record that's way way more than you'd even expect from the title – an early 70s collaboration between arranger Galt MacDermot and singer Nell Carter on a project of all original material with a very soulful vibe! The set isn't gospel tunes sung by a soul artist – and instead features these cool, complicated grooves that have all the best MacDermot touches that we love in his best soundtracks – played by Galt on piano with Bernard Purdie on drums, Seldon Powell on tenor, and Bad Bascomb on bass – a mighty tight combo who make the whole thing groove a lot more than you'd expect! And Nell Carter isn't the only singer, either – as the record also features a lot of work by Salome Bey, of Andy & The Bey Sisters fame – as well as the Howard Roberts Chorale, who were really getting righteous at this time. Many titles are short, and the whole thing works together beautifully as kind of a single piece – with titles that include "Cleaning Me With Fire", "May God Care", "Strange Gods", "Self From Self", "Up To The Altar", "In The Name Of The Father", "Sanctus", and "Out Of The Depths". Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $8.99
Stanley Clarke's a bassist who first got his start in the headier side of the jazz spectrum in the 70s – but by the second half of that decade, he'd transformed into something else completely – a fantastic musician who could effortlessly reach across soul, funk, and fusion – combining all the best elements into an incredible sound that was all his own! Clarke's part of a generation that might include artists like Norman Connors, George Duke, and Mtume – all artists who might have been straighter jazz had they worked in the 60s, but who really flowered in the new freedoms of the 70s – as they hit superstardom with music like this. Duke and Clarke often collaborated – and you'll hear a good deal of that work on this set – which also includes work with Howard Hewett, Herbie Hancock, and Fuse One – plus lots of Stanley Clarke solo tracks too. 2CD set features 32 tracks in all – and titles include "Concerto For Jazz Rock Orchestra", "Journey To Love", "Jamaican Boy", "Modern Man", "More Hot Fun", "The Dancer", "Silly Putty", "Heroes", "Straight To The Top", "Heaven Sent You", "We Supply", "Grand Prix", "Mothership Connection", "Funny How Time Flies", "Hideaway", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "What If I Should Fall In Love", "Time Exposure", "Sweet Baby", "Wild Dog", "Rocks Pebbles & Sand", and "Hot Fun". Nicola Conte & Gianluca PetrellaAfrican Spirits/New World Shuffle ... 12-inch
Schema (Italy), 2017. New Copy (pic cover)... $16.99
A record that's way more than just the 12" single you might guess from the format – as it's a wonderfully deep collaboration between Nicola Conte and trombonist Gianluca Petrella – done at a level that's maybe more like a spiritual jazz record overall! "African Spirits" definitely has a groove – the sort you'll know from other Conte records – but it's less bossa and more tribal, with lots of percussion layered in the mix, as well as rising voices that feel borrowed from other records – all blended with a righteous energy that's more in Osunlade territory than usual for Schema! The tune's got a very powerful set of solos – strong tenor, and even bolder trombone from Petrella – and "New World Shuffle" is even rawer at the core, but features strongly soulful vocals from Bridgette Amofah, and some great keyboards too! Both tracks are nice and long, too. 12-inch, Vinyl record

The record has Conte working with a hip Spiritual Galaxy ensemble, filled with key talents from labels that include Schema, Brownswood, and modern Blue Note – artists that are helping redefine the deepest currents of contemporary music, and who seem to soar even farther under the leadership of Nicola! There's vocals on most tracks – from singers who include Bridgette Amofah, Zara McFarlane, Carolina Bubbico, and Zoe Modica – but the album's equally heavy on the instrumental tip – as it includes performances from Logan Richardson on alto, Magnus Lindgren on tenor and flute, Theo Croker on trumpet, Pietro Lussu on keyboards, and Gianluca Petrella on trombone and moog. Most titles are originals, written in close collaboration with members of the group – and titles include "Uhuru Na Umoja", "Cosmic Peace", "Mystic Revelation Of The Gods", "Space Dimensions", "Tribes From The Unknown", "Afro Black", and "Essence Of The Sun". Gal CostaGal (1969) ... CD
Philips/Mercury (Brazil), 1969. New Copy ... About May 25, 2018
Heady heady work from the legendary Gal Costa – caught here right at her early best, smack dab in the middle of the Tropicalia years! The album's one of Gal's legendary collaborations with arranger Rogerio Duprat – and it's very much in the spirit of her other incredible session from 1969, but also features some even heavier and more tripped out guitar – in a way that really pushes the psychedelic aspect of the work! The sound here is really amazing – very fuzzy and freaky at times, in ways that make the album one of the most rocking sets of the entire Tropicalia scene, but in ways that still hang onto the quirky experimental qualities of work by Os Mutantes or Caetano Veloso. Gal's vocals really rip out amazingly at times – light years away from the sweet sound of the late 70s, and more in the frenetic, urgent style you'd expect from the politically-charged scene that spawned the set. Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil join Gal on a great version of "Pais Tropical", Jards Macale guest stars on the classic "Empty Boat" – and other tracks include "Tuareg", "Meu Nome E Gal", "Pulsars E Quasars", and "Cultura E Civilizaco". Funky drums and a whole lot more – a crackling Blue Note album from Chris Dave & The Drumhedz – maybe one of the few on the label to ever carry a parental advisory sticker! The sticker's well-placed, though – as Chris doesn't just drum, but also opens the door for a host of strong guest stars to provide plenty of lyrical content – a large lineup that includes Anderson.Paak, Bilal, Tweet, Sy Smith, Donald Rose, Krndn, Sir, Stokley Williams, Eric Roberson, Phone Coleman, Goapele, Anna Wise, Shafiq Husayn, and others – all of whom bring enough range of expression to match the energy of the Black Radio project from Robert Glasper! Like those records, this set's one that you never would have expected from Blue Note years back – but it's also a great example of the way the label's trying to find a new energy of expression in jazz – as Dave's drums work with keyboards from James Poyser, organ from Marcus Hodge, guitar from Isaiah Sharkey, and other great instrumental contributions from the likes of Keyon Harrold, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. The sound of the set is as diverse as its many collaborators – and titles include "Job Well Done", "Lady Jane", Trippy Tipsy", "Universal Language", "Rocks Crying", "Spread Her Wings", "Destiny N Stereo", "Clear View", "Atlanta Texas", "Whatever", "Sensitive Granite", "Cosmic Intercourse", "Dat Feelin", and "Black Hole". A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an important distinction to the way the album progresses.) Evans' arrangements have a majesty that takes the songs to the next level – working them as lush, lively backings for Davis' equally majestic trumpet solos, some of the finest he ever recorded with large group backing. Amazing work by The Delfonics – their first 2 albums, back to back on a single CD! La La Means I Love You is a landmark album in harmony soul – one of those records that pushed the genre to a whole new level! The Delfonics emerge fully formed here as one of the most compelling groups of their time – a tremendous trio with a really unique approach to soul music – one that's heartfelt and heartbreaking, but never too sweet to be cloying or poppy – definitely just the right groove to keep things hip while also cracking the charts! Sound Of Sexy Soul is an equally groundbreaking album of vocal group soul – right from the first note! The record kicks off with the sublime "Ready Or Not, Here I Come" – which starts with fierce stepping strings that are actually funky, then soars into some of the best harmonies the group ever put to record, superbly arranged by the great Thom Bell, who also wrote the track. As the album progresses, the sound expands further to encompass many elements that would become the blueprint for vocal groups over the next few years – like twangy electric sitar, cascading orchestrations, and pinched lead vocals that take a lot more chances than most group singers had been taking for years! There's still a bit of a 60s soul sound to some of the cuts, but the album's a watershed – not only for Thom Bell and the group, but for harmony soul as well! Titles include "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "My New Love", "Loving Him", "With These Hands", "Somebody Loves You", and "Everytime I See My Baby". One of the loveliest voices in the world – backed by some of the greatest orchestrations ever – all in a wonderful collection that showcases the vocal talents of Edda Dell'Orso over the famous soundtrack compositions of Ennio Morricone! There have been other collections of Edda's vocals over the years, but this one seems to get it especially right – and it offers some of the most sublime, most exemplary tunes from her famous collaborations with Morricone – songs that almost seem to hang in the air with vocals floating on the breeze, backed up by music that's extremely light and spacious! Titles include "Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange", "C'Era Una Volta Il West", "L'Estasi Dell'Oro", "A Lydia", "Verushka", "Alla Serenita", "Le Train", and "Lontano". LP, Vinyl record album

Elephant's MemoryElephant's Memory (1969 – Buddah) ... CD
Buddah/Intermusic (Spain), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
A pretty wild set from Elephants Memory – one that's as trippy as you'd guess from the group's image on the cover – and equally collaborative too! There's a strong mix of male and female vocals here – over guitar and rhythms that move effortlessly between blues rock and psych – all with a pretty loose, freewheeling sense of production – but enough tightness to make some of the chorus moments snap out nicely! Wes Farrell produced, but seems to really let the band do their thing – and in addition to songs written by group members Stan Bronstein, Michal Shapiro, and Richard Sussman – there also seems to be some song contributions from Tony Visconti too. Titles include "Hot Dog Man", "Talkin A Walk", "RIP", "Jungle Gym At The Zoo", "Don't Put Me On Trial No More", "Crossroads Of The Stepping Stones", "Band Of Love", and "Brief Encounter". CD

Brian Eno/Moebius/RoedeliusAfter The Heat ... LP
Sky (Germany), 1978. Near Mint- ... $59.99
Probably the best of the Eno/Cluster collaborations – and a damn great record that's probably one of Eno's last great efforts of the 70s! The record has a beautifully spacey sound, with spare analog electronics that have a perfect German 70's feel – flowing out with an Eno-tuned sense of grace, and made even better by lyrics from Brian on a few of the album's best tracks! The singing style here is in that same beautiful deadpan machine-like mode used on Another Green World – and those tracks are easily up there with his best vocal work on his own albums. Titles include "The Belldog", "Broken Head", "Light Arms", "Old Land", and "Oil". LP, Vinyl record album

Phil EverlyThere's Nothing Too Good For My Baby/Mystic Line (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pye/Morello (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $8.99
Two later solo albums by solo Everly Brother Phil – presented with bonus tracks too! First up is There's Nothing Too Good For My Baby – also issued in the US as Phil's Diner – an album recorded in London, as part of his new label deal with Pye Records – but also has the kind of close-up setting that really showcases his maturation as a singer/songwriter! There's few hints here of the work that Phil recorded with his Everly Brother in the 60s – but that evolution's also a nice thing too – as Everly is almost a completely different artist here, working to deliver some beautiful tunes that have him finding a very individual voice, produced in an understated way that still keeps things very close to home. Titles include "Summershine", "Feather Bed", "We're Running Out", "Caroline", "There's Nothing Too Good For My Baby", "New Old Song", and "Goodbye Line". Mystic Line is a sharply contemporary set from Phil Everly – and music that's quite different than the Everly Brothers sound of a decade before! Part of the album's strength comes from a young Warren Zevon – who plays keyboards and handled the arrangements – really finding himself after previous time in the Brothers' band, but here very much shaping the sound of Phil as a solo act, with that mix of sensitivity and bite that he would bring to his own solo classics in the late 70s. Most tracks are originals by Everly, one a collaboration with Zevon – and titles include "Patiently", "Words In Your Eyes", "Better Than Now", "Friends", "When Will I Be Loved", "You & I Are Like A Song", and "January Butterfly". CD features bonus tracks "Baby You Know Me" and "The Three Bells". CD

✨✧ Exploding Star OrchestraStars Have Shapes ... LP
Delmark, 2010. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
The most amazing records to date from Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra – just the kind of cosmic, spiritual session you'd expect from the group's name – perfectly placed in a Chicago lineage that includes Sun Ra's Arkestra and the best years of the AACM! The group's got all the collaborative spirit of the latter reference – a largeish ensemble made up of some of the city's most important avant musicians in recent years – including Nicole Mitchell on flute, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass, Matt Bauder on clarinet and tenor, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, and Mike Reed and John Herndon on drums – all players who know each others strengths through countless gigs together – coming together under the visionary leadership of Rob Mazurek on cornet. There's some slight electro-acoustic elements, which further complicate the sound of the record – but all without ever taking it off base – and the whole thing's got a righteous sort of energy that makes us mighty proud that sounds this great came from our hometown. Titles include "ChromoRocker", "Impression #1", "Ascenscion Ghost Impression #2", and "Three Blocks Of Light". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic sounds from the Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra – a group with family ties to Azymuth and Incognito, and who work here in the best blend of Brazilian and soulful elements that might imply! The ensemble is a crowning achievement for the Far Out label – a summation of all the great work they've done from the London scene, including their reintroduction of key Brazilian musicians of the 70s – all soaring to the skies here, with a richly collaborative energy! The group features lots of keyboards from Jose Roberto Bertrami, guitars from Alex Malheiros, and keyboards and rhythms from Daniel Maunick – plus great contributions from many others, including some help from the legendary Arthur Verocai. Most tunes groove in a mighty nice way – not vintage disco, but a soaring, righteous 21st Century version of club – on tunes that include "Step Into My Life", "Flying High", "Black Sun", "The Two Of Us", "Walking Bass", "Give It To Me", and "Where Do We Go From Here". Hiroshi FukumuraHunt Up Wind ... CD
JVC (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the crowning classics of the 70s from Japanese trombonist Hiroshi Fukumura – easily one of the funkiest players on his instrument in the decade! Hiroshi's not only got a cool, compressed tone that works great with the electric vibe in the music – he's also got a strong sense of collaboration, which makes his performance here fit right in with a well-chosen group of all-star players – who also let Fukumura have plenty of solo space to himself. The combo is mostly American – with sweet Fender Rhodes from Don Grusin, guitar from Cornell Dupree, electric bass from Chuck Rainey, drums from Harvey Mason, and percussion from Paulinho DaCosta – about as rock-solid of a funky fusion rhythm combo as you could ever hope to have! The mighty Sadao Watanabe also joins in on alto and flute – and gets in some wonderful solos, too – on titles that include "Hunt Up Wind", "Pogo", "White Clouds", "Jango", and "Captain Caribe". CD

Leave it to George Clinton to keep on being productive over all these years – so much so that even after we haven't heard from Funkadelic for awhile, George hits us with a full 3CDs' worth of new material! The sound and style here continues that extrapolation of older P-Funk with newer modes that Clinton's been doing during recent revival modes – an approach that updates his older funk with touches from hip hop and contemporary R&B, but always at a level that still keeps that older Clinton spirit alive and well! And as usual, George has plenty of friends and longtime associates on board to help create a very collaborative sound – including Sly Stone, El DeBarge, Sidney Barnes, Fred Wesley, Garry Shider, and other legends from the P-Funk universe. Charlotte GainsbourgRest ... CD
Atlantic, 2017. New Copy ... $7.99 13.98
Fantastic sounds from Charlotte Gainsbourg – a singer we first fell in love with through her father, the famous Serge – but who we've really come to love tremendously over the years – both through her work on screen and in the studio! Charlotte's got this sense of presence that's unlike anyone else at all – on film she's a complete individual, and on record she's very much the same – even while also echoing everything that made both Serge and Jane Birkin so great back in the day! This set has Charlotte working with collaborator Sebastian on most tracks – often in a musical mode that has spare rhythms, bass, and keyboards in the background – almost befitting the slight 80s look of the cover, but never in any sort of easy retro mode at all. The approach is a personal reinvention of an earlier generation of French sounds – and titles include "Lying With You", "Kate", "Deadly Valentine", "Rest", "I'm A Lie", "Dans Vos Airs", and "Les Crocodiles" – as well as the song "Songbird In A Cage", which features guest work from Paul McCartney – and "Sylvia Says", which features lyrics by Sylvia Plath. Philips/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... About March 21, 2018 (delayed)
An incredible collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot – one of Serge's first duet albums ever – and a gem all the way through! In the year before he cut "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" with Jane Birkin, Serge recorded this great album with Brigitte Bardot in which he worked out many of the same ideas. The album is probably best known for the track "Bonnie & Clyde" – which has been sampled to great fame over the years – but there's loads of other great tracks on here, with a mix of styles that joins Serge's jazzy years with his softcore 70s work – very cool, very groovy, and years ahead of its time. Some tracks are duets, and some are sung individually by Serge or Brigitte, but they're all great, and titles include "Intoxicated Man", "L'eau A La Bouche", "Un Jour Comme Un Autre", "Comic Strip", and more! Arrangements by Alain Gourager, Michel Colombier, and Claude Bolling – and the cover's got a great shot of Serge & BB as Bonnie & Clyde! CD

An incredible record – quite possibly our favorite ever by Marvin Gaye! The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very much on the mind of Marvin during his troubled years of the mid 70s. The whole thing's beautifully put together – superbly orchestrated with just the right funky touches, and even a sweet bit of electronics to give the set a nice edge. An amazing album – one of those soul records that goes deeper and deeper than you ever thought pop music could go – filled with great tracks that include "I Want You", "After the Dance", "Come Live With Me", and "Since I Had You". Genius – pure genius! CD

Stan Getz5 Original Albums Vol 2 (Jazz Samba/Jazz Samba Encore/With Laurindo Almeida/Getz Gilberto/Getz Gilberto 2) (5CD set) ... CD
Verve (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $19.99
An insane collection of music – five albums that perfectly showcase the bossa nova genius of Stan Getz! First up is Jazz Samba – one of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a big early proponent of bossa nova rhythms, and had already been experimenting with them on his records of the time – yet also gets a key extra "umph" here in the presence of Stan's tenor – a bold, rich, soulful sound that really helps give the music a lot of direction – in ways that still resonate strongly all these many years later! Getz is completely sublime – a master of tone and timing throughout – and perfectly fit to these tunes. Rhythms are mostly from Byrd's trio, augmented with some extra percussion – and titles include the classic "Desafinado", plus "E Luxo So", "Samba Dees Days", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba De Uma Nota So", and "Baia". Jazz Samba Encore is hardly an "encore" of the first Stan Getz Jazz Samba album – as this set's got a slightly different feel, and lots of great elements that make it really unique! This time around, Brazilian musician Luiz Bonfa is on guitar – already a skilled proponent of the bossa by the time of the record, and arguably one of the few who really got it going back home in Rio. Stan's tenor sounds wonderful – as carefully and soufully blown as on the first set, but also with some new colors and tones too. Bonfa's wife Maria Toledo sings a bit on the record – hinting at Stan's work to come with Astrud Gilberto (this album was cut right before the Getz/Gilberto collaboration) – and the record also features added work on piano and guitar from the great Antonio Carlos Jobim – more than enough proof that the album's got a pure bossa pedigree! Titles include "Menina Flor", "Ebony Samba", "Saudade Vem Correndo", "Sambalero", "Samba De Duas Notas", and "Mania De Maria". With Laurindo Almeida is one of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of long tracks, and nice laid-back solos by both Getz and Almeida – who's getting in some of his few jazz licks of the 60s here, working in a groove similar to that of his earlier sides with Bud Shank, but which sounds almost even better in the languid company of Getz. Cuts include "Outra Vez", "Winter Moon", "Maracatu-Too", and "Samba Da Sahra". Getz Gilberto is a landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". Getz Gilberto 2 is a very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". Stan Getz & Astrud GilbertoGetz Au Go Go ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... $4.99
A beautiful dreamy album that's quite different from the classic Getz/Gilberto collaboration – but which also shares much of that set's lyrical beauty! This album was recorded live, in 1964, when Stan Getz was playing with his quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes – an incredible lineup that made for some wonderfully moody sounds! The vibes/tenor approach was a high point in Getz's career – especially as the young Burton could create these beautiful washes of sound that were a perfect counterpoint to Getz's breathy playing. And although Astrud Gilberto is thrown into the mix here to give the album a bit of bossa appeal – vocals on 6 titles that include "Corovado", "Eu E Voce", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "One Note Samba", "Only Trust Your Heart", and "The Telephone Song" – there's also 4 more tracks that are all instrumental, and which show the Getz/Burton union in all of its glory! These tracks include "6 Nix Pix Flix", "The Singing Song", "Here's That Rainy Day", and "Summertime". And for reference, the rest of the group includes Gene Cherico on bass and Joe Hunt on drums – but on 3 tracks, Chuck Israels plays bass instead of Cherico, and on a few others, Helcio Milito plays drums instead of Hunt, and Kenny Burrell joins in on guitar. A fascinating look at the world of Mexican music in the 20th Century – put together in collaboration with Arhoolie Records, the label that's done plenty to reissue the music over the years! The book begins with the huge archive of recordings by the label's founder, Chris Strachwitz – then takes off in a number of different streams – providing historical context, critical evaluation, and even some discographical details – in the form of various lists and sections of music. The book looks at some key styles too – including corridos and mariachi, traced both through Mexican recordings, and US singles by Mexican-Americans – and the whole thing is only the tip of the iceberg, in relation to the 40,000 recordings that have been digitized by the University Of California Library as part of the project. Still, there's plenty here to get you started – a huge amount of information that's even more inspirational than some of Arhoolie's great reissues over the years – in an oversized book that's 226 pages, softcover, with many black and white images too. Takayuki HamadaChronique Michel Legrand – De Ses Debuts A Aujourd'hui ... Book
Rittor (Japan), 2017. New Copy ... $32.99
A beautiful book on the decades of recorded output from one of our favorite composers ever – the legendary Michel Legrand – an artist known to most folks for his famous soundtracks of the 60s and 70s – but also a jazz musician, singer, and even a very groovy instrumental arranger! All those many aspects of Legrand's music are brought together here wonderfully – in a rich discography that's done in a similar style to some of the Japanese jazz discographies in our racks – but with maybe even a wider-ranging approach, given that Legrand's records were issued in so many countries over so many years! The style here is familiar if you know those other discographies – each record gets a listing with a reproduction of the cover in color, plus release date, label, catalog number, and even songs and other details. The book also features short reviews of many of the records, and longer text on Legrand – all of which is in Japanese – but the volume also balances things out beautifully for non-Japanese readers, with lots of photos and other beautiful images. The soundtrack section is especially great, as it also includes lots of rare singles and EP releases – and the book also features chapters on Legrand's jazz work, his vocal releases, live records, collaborations, musicals, and arrangements for a huge amount of singers. There's even a special sleeve gallery at the back, with lots more rare album covers in full color – and even a listing of all his scores for films. A beautiful book if you love Michel Legrand as much as we do – 255 pages, with loads of beautiful full color images! Book

For the most part, the tunes seem to be excursions on Musa Suso's native Gambian rhythms, plucked out as gentle arpeggios on the Kora, with Herbie's subtle keys and synths complementing nicely. An unusual album in the Atlantic career of Donny Hathaway – and a unique collaboration with the legendary Quincy Jones! The music here is Hathaway's sole entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack genre of the 70s – penned for film version of a Chester Himes novel, and scored in a mix of funky 70s modes and other more standard jazz styles. Quincy's on board as the "musical supervisor" – and clearly helps Donny focus his energies towards the hipper side of the soundtrack spectrum, especially on the more contemporary styled tracks. And although most of the work here is instrumental, Hathaway also sings a bit too – most famously on the classic "Little Ghetto Boy" – which is easily one of Donny's greatest tracks ever! The great Michael Henderson is a hell of a talent in 70s soul – an artist that some folks know for his more way-out work on bass with Miles Davis, or his early vocals with Norman Connors – but also a singer, arranger, and key creative talent – one who followed the same path as Connors, by moving from jazz to super-sophisticated soul! Henderson's music really took shape in the second half of the 70s – which is the territory covered by most of this collection – a great look at the artistic flowering of Henderson on the Buddah label, with a few key collaborations thrown in for good measure too. The 2CD set features 34 tracks in all – all with that wonderful sense of track selection that always makes these Soulmusic.com sets so great – and titles include early tracks recorded with Norman Connors – "You Are My Starship", "Valentine Love", and "We Both Need Each Other" – and duets, with Roberta Flack on "At The Concert", and a post-Connors performance with Phyllis Hyman on "Can't We Fall In Love Again". A fantastic record from Gaby Hernandez – a singer we've loved for previous collaborations with Build An Ark and Life Force Trio – but who really knocks it out of the park with this double-length set! The presentation is a bit unusual – in that the entire album is presented with vocal versions of the songs, then a second instrumental take on the tracks – the latter a great showcase for the album's many collaborators – a heavy-duty lineup that features Kamasi Washington, Carlos Nino, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Dexter Story, and the Contact Field Orchestra! Gaby's vocals really sine in all this great company – and the musicians have ways to deepen the spirit of her songs, and take things in places that still make us love the music, even after her voice has dropped out. Titles include "Spirit Reflection", "Into Yoa", "Super Nova Lovers", "Baobab Tree", "Messy Love", "Los Mas Dulce", "Stay A While", and "Entranced". CD

✨✧ Ollie HowellSelf-Identity ... CD
Sky Academy/Ropeadope, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
A beautiful voyage of self-discovery from drummer Ollie Howell – but a set that also clearly gets its strength his collaboration with the other members of the session too! Ollie adds in a bit of electronics with his drums, but the core energy here mostly comes from the acoustic exchange between the tenor of Duncan Eagles, trumpet of Henry Spencer, piano of Matt Robinson, and bass of Max Luthert – players who often create these building blocks of sound that soar to the sky with sort of an understated spiritual vibe – very contemporary in approach, yet also with much deeper roots of inspiration. The group also features Ant Law on guitar, and Robinson plays a bit of Fender Rhodes – but the most haunting elements, to us, come from that acoustic core that really drives the sound. Titles include "Almost Tomorrow", "Rise & Fall", "Shadows", "Knew", "Balancing Stones", "In Truth", and "The Unknown". CD

Bobbi HumphreyFancy Dancer ... LP
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good ... $16.99
Sublime genius from funky flute player Bobbi Humphrey – a record we'd rank right up there with her classic Blacks & Blues set – and like that one, another fantastic collaboration with producer Larry Mizell! The groove here is tremendous throughout – a heady mix of Bobbi's flute, Larry's keyboards, and some additional work from Jerry Peters, Skip Scarborough, and other 70s funky jazz legends – all coming together in a large lineup that works together with an amazingly tight and stripped-down groove – a sound that seems to flow effortlessly from the breeze, but which was the long result of careful work in the studio by Larry Mizell and his brother Fonce, who also helped on arrangements. Humphrey is in excellent form – blowing with a tone that's hard, crisp, and very soulful – and the spacey keyboards and gentle grooves lift her flute way out into the cosmos, yet never push things too far! Every cut's a winner – and titles include "You Make Me Feel So Good", "Please Set Me At Ease", "Uno Esta", "The Trip", "Fancy Dancer", and "Mestizo Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

Phyllis HymanDeliver The Love – The Phyllis Hyman Anthology ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99
A beautiful collection of work from the legendary Phyllis Hyman – a set that not only includes her groundbreaking records as a solo act, but also a big range of her famous collaborations with jazz artists who include Norman Connors, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, and Grover Washington! Hyman is a singer unlike anyone else – an artist who was raised equally in jazz and soul, then found a way to mix the best of both with a new sort of sophistication that made her one of the most important female soul talents to show the way forward during the 80s – an artist who was always equal parts class and care, soul and style – and one who departed our planet all too soon. Fortunately, even after a short time of recording, Phyllis already left us an amazing legacy of music – as you'll hear in this set of overstuffed gems – a 33 track package that includes "Sacred Kind Of Love", "Baby", "You Know How To Love Me", "Under Your Spell", "Sleep On It", "Loving You Losing You (12" mix)", "Deliver The Love", "Can't We Fall In Love Again", "Let Somebody Love You", "Gonna Make Changes", "Black & Blue", "Somewhere In My Lifetime", "I'll Be Around", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "No One Can Love You More (7" version)", "Just Imagine", "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere", "In A Sentimental Mood", "In Search Of My Heart", "I Don't Want To Lose You", "Why Did You Turn Me On", "Riding The Tiger (single)", and "Tonight You & Me (disco version)". Gerardo IacoucciIndustria No 1 ... LP
Canopo/Intervallo (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
A beautiful little sound library set – but in a noisy sort of way! Gerardo Iacoucci really takes the "industry" in the title seriously – and creates all these cool tunes that capture the sound of automation and factory work – mostly through modes that are rhythmic and repetitive, sometimes with darker structures that make you feel like the whole factory is shutting down and starting to rust! Some of the best tunes have a bright sort of quality – not music designed to get laborers to work, but which might come from the unity of their actions in production. The set features a dozen tracks in all – with some nice shifts in mood throughout! LP, Vinyl record album

Gerardo IacoucciUrbanistica (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The grooviest sound library work we've ever heard from Gerardo Iacoucci – a fabulous mix of playful mod and psych-steeped uptempo jazzy material – equal to, but with a wildly different style than his far out Simbolismo Psichedelico record from around the same time! This one is packed with a lot of short, fast-paced numbers with a fresh and sunny style. Lots of wonderful piano and keyboard groovers here with punchy brass and soul jazzy rhythms. Excellent! Includes collaborations with Mario Vinciguerra (credited as M. Fusciati back in the day), a fellow composer, trumpet and trombone player, and titles include "Isola Pedonale", "Cemento Armato", "Urbanistica", "Pendolari", "Mercati Generali", "Citta Satellite", "Semafori", "Onda Verde", 'Servizi Urbani", "Autoparcheggio", "Zona Industrial", "Suburbio" and more. Milt Jackson & John ColtraneBags & Trane ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Sealed ... $16.99
An incredible collaboration from John Coltrane and Milt Jackson – and one that gives Milt one of his sharpest records ever! The setting is relatively straight – tenor from Coltrane, vibes from Jackson – plus rhythm from Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Yet there's also a sense of openness here that you'd hardly ever expect on other records by Jackson – especially his contemporaneous sides with the Modern Jazz Quartet – and Coltrane's tenor gets as much room to roam here as it did on Prestige – really cutting some beautifully soulful, open, and flowing lines throughout! Titles include "Bags & Trane", "Three Little Words", "Be-Bop", "Late Late Blues", and "The Night We Called It a Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Walter JacksonFeeling Good ... LP
Chi Sound, 1976. Very Good ... $0.99
The first of six "comeback" albums that this great Chicago soul singer cut during his second wave of recording during the late 70s! Walter had originally done some amazing work with the great Carl Davis at the Okeh label during the mid 60s – and this album marks a return to their collaboration – this time at Davis' own Chi-Sound subsidiary of 20th Century Records. Jackson here takes all the smooth sophistication of his early days, and transforms himself into an adult singer of soul songs – taking a route similar to that travelled by singers like Jerry Butler or Lou Rawls at the same time. Like Rawls, the style doesn't always work – but when it does, it's great. Titles include "Love Is Lovelier", "Words", "Too Shy To Say", "Please Pardon Me (You Remind Me Of A Friend)", "Love Woke Me Up This Morning", and a remake of "Welcome Home". LP, Vinyl record album

The second collaboration between the Jacksons and the Gamble & Huff production team for Philly International – and a nice little sleeper that we like more and more over the years! Like the preceding album from the team, the pairing's a great one – and the Jacksons' pop soul harmonies match up very nicely with the full, rich sound of the Philly groove! Titles include "Music's Takin' Over", "Goin' Places", "Different Kind Of Lady", "Even Though You're Gone", "Jump For Joy", "Heaven Knows I Love You, Girl", "Man Of War", "Do What You Wanna", and "Find Me A Girl". Bert JanschJack Orion ... LP
Transatlantic/Superior Viaduct, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
A huge leap forward for the mighty Bert Jansch – and a record that's somehow even more amazing than the ones that came before! Bert's maybe even more introspective here, but also on a personal journey that takes him down musical paths that seem broader than before – almost echoing a wider range of influences on his guitar performance, yet in a way that still comes across with a uniquely pointed vibe. There's some occasional shift in the instrumentation, too – as Jansch plays banjo on the leadoff track, but with the same chilling currents as his sublime acoustic guitar – and John Renbourn joins on second guitar for a number of tracks, prefacing the pair's collaboration to come. And as with all of Jansch's genius material at this point, there's a quality that's both ancient and modern, timeless and uniquely tied to its moment – flowering beautifully on tunes that include "Jack Orion", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Nottamun Town", "Black Water Side", "Pretty Polly", and "The Gardner". JaylibChampion Sound ... LP
Stones Throw, 2003. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 22.99
Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. To Detroit", "McNasty Filth" with Frank-n-Dank, "Nowadayz", "Champion Sound", "The Red", "Heavy", "Raw S*!t" with Kweli, "The Official", "The Heist", "The Mission", "React" with Quasimodo, "The Exclusive" with Percee P, "Survival Test", "Starz" and "No Games". Maria JoaoPoesia De Aldir Blanc ... CD
SESCSP (Brazil), 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
A sensitive tribute to the music of Aldir Blanc – the sublime Brazilian songwriter whose 70s collaborations with Joao Bosco helped elevate the music to a whole new level – and whose words really take on new sort of beauty here, thanks to very unusual handling by Maria Joao! Joao's always been one of the more interesting Brazilian female singers – equally skilled in jazz, and also open to more freely creative modes – which she really embraces here, as most tunes just feature one other instrument for accompaniment, leaving Maria's voice to handle a lot of the other elements of the songs. This doesn't mean that Joao just sings gently alongside a guitar or piano – instead, it means that Maria's expressiveness is pushed even further, to embrace the full scope of the songs, and make them come alive with her voice – as she does here on songs that include Aldir Blanc collaborations with Joao Bosco, Carlos Paredes, and Guinga. Titles include "O Coco Do Coco", "Sede E Morte", "O Bebado E A Equilibrista", "Linha De Passe", "Lendas Brasileiras", and "O Sonho". CD

✨✧ Thad Jones & Mel LewisNew Life ... LP
Horizon, 1976. Very Good Gatefold ... $0.99
A wonderful start to the second decade of this ultra-hip group – an ensemble who started to reinvent the sound of the big band in the late 60s, then only picked up more and more energy once time went on! Thad Jones and Mel Lewis are a hell of a pair – not only great leaders for a session like this, but such warmly collaborative players that they're able to bring together something of a supergroup for the record – with players like Jon Faddis and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpets, Jerry Dodgion on flute and alto, Frank Foster and Greg Herbert on tenor saxes, David Spinozza on guitar, Pepper Adams on baritone, and Roland Hanna on both acoustic and electric piano – all key players in a much larger lineup that's almost too big to name! Tracks are long, and arranged with a great deal of depth – but never in a way that fails to swing – and titles include "Forever Lasting", "Little Rascal On A Rock", "Love & Harmony", "Greetings & Salutations", and "Love To One Is One To Love". Kako & AzuquitaLive It Up ... LP
West Side Latino, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
One of the best collaborations between Puerto Rican bandleader Kako and swingin' Panamanian vocalist Azuquita – and one of the seminal albums from the amazing late 60s era of West Side Latino Records! The record's got a number of nice tracks written by Louie Ramirez, including a few groovy boogaloos like "Panama's Boogaloo", "Aunque No Tengo Dinero", "Shingaling Shingaling", and "Cool Jerk", which is a Latin cover of the Capitols' hit. The title track "Live it Up" is, on top of being one of the most apt titles for a record we've come across in a while, a real pounder of Latin soul track with vocals by Bobby Marin. The whole thing adds up to one of those driving, heavily percussive Latin gems that we would surely have a hard time living without – and a real joy to see repressed on vinyl! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KassinRelax (with bonus download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $19.99 20.99
We admire the hell out of Kassin, but it's hard to imagine that we'd relax when faced with a new record of his – as we always pay fervent attention to everything he ever does! And this time around, that attention is rewarded even more than usual – as the musician and studio genius emerges a bit more from the background than usual – finally putting his face on the cover (sort of!), and really showing off his talents as both a singer and songwriter! Yet as with all of Kassin's other work – including his famous collaborations with Domenico and Moreno Veloso, his time in Orquesta Imperial, and his projects with bigger names in Brazilian music – there's always this understated quality that makes the whole thing even more charming than if Kassin was overstating his talents. Kassin is one of the few contemporary Brazilian artists to really live up to the genius of the golden years that gave us talents like Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, or Caetano Veloso – and his sense of songwriting, presentation, and overall structure here is wonderful – making the album an instant classic in Brazilian music. Titles include "Seria O Donut", "Comprimidos Demais", "Estricnina", "Momento De Clareza", "O Anestesista", "Su Sugestao", "Enquanto Desaba O Mundo", and "As Coisa Que Nos Nao Fizemos".
