SpinnersYesterday Today Tomorrow/Labor Of Love ... CD
Collectables, 1977/1981. Used ... $6.99
2 lesser known albums by The Spinners – the first arranged by Thom Bell, the group's big supportive talent from the early days, the later arranged by Michael Zager, who's reaching a bit to try to give the group a more modern soul sound. Neither record is one of the group's finest – but overall, the CD's 14 tracks (3 are omitted from Labor Of Love, due to space restrictions) have enough good moments to show that The Spinners could still be going strong. The group's vocals are always a treat – even though there's not as many totally excellent tracks on the set – and titles include "I'm Riding Your Shadow", "You're Throwing A Good Love Away", "Honey I'm In Love With You", "Almost All The Way To Love", "Long Live Soul Music", "Give Your Lady What She Wants", "You're The Love Of My Life", and "I Found Love". Heiner StadlerBrains On Fire Vol 2 ... LP
Labor, 1974. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Pianist Heiner Stadler was a key part of the New Jersey underground of the late 60s and early 70s – and although he wasn't the greatest avant garde pianist in the world, he was fortunate enough to have his own record label, and to be able to work with some of the better talents of the scene on his own record. Case in point is this album, which features the track "Love In The Middle Of The Air", an extended duet between Reggie Workman on bass and Dee Dee Bridgewater on voice – really a wild one, and quite different than most of Bridgewater's work done in later years. The track's a key part of her career (not to mention Workman's), and Stadler fortunately stayed out of the set to let the pair improvise together freely. Side two features two shorter tracks – "UCS" and "Pointed" – more outside, and played with groups that include Tyrone Washington, Garnett Brown, Workman, and Lenny White. LP, Vinyl record album

Iron Mountain Analog Research/Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 29.98
A fantastic little set that looks at themes of hard work and labor in postwar country music – territory that certainly opened up with the success of the Merle Travis tune "Sixteen Tons" – and which took very different forms in country music than the same topic in folk and blues! These tunes often have a sense of wit amongst the strivings and struggles in the workplace – maybe a slight "American hero" vibe, of the sort that would resonate strongly in country trucker tunes! and in case you're wondering, there's not a trucker track among these – as the tunes are more focused on hard labor in the mines, the fields, and the factory All tracks are brought together with the same sense of careful choice that the label brings to their Hillbillies In Hell series – and songs include "Workin Man" by Bobby Barnett, "A Working Man's Prayer" by Tex Ritter, "Money" by Tex Williams, "Workin Hands" by Dave Dudley, "Cotton Mill" by Eddie Noack, "Down In The Mine" by The Wray Family, "Don't Want To Work" by Doc Williams, "On Strike" by David Hiser, "Money Hungry" by Arlie Duff, "By The Sweat Of My Brow" by Bill Carter, and Tennessee Ernie Ford's great remake of his hit, "Sixteen Tons '65". VariousGive Me My Flowers – Powerhouse Gospel Music From The 50s & 60s On Nashboro Records ... LP
Nashboro/Third Man, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel recordings from the legendary Nashboro Records – one of the most important imprints for the music back in the 50s and 60s! We rank the work of Nashboro right up with the famous Houston-bred productions of Peacock Records – and as Peacock was part of the secular soul label Duke, Nashboro was also part of the blues powerhouse Excello – which means that the cuts here are put together at a level that's maybe got as much understanding of the needs of the record racks and jukebox scene, as they are aimed at the higher ideals of the lyrics! Nashboro excelled especially in the sorts of small vocal groups that can make gospel singles from this time every bit as much a slice of harmony heavy as rare doo wop tracks – and titles here include "Seven Angels" by The Trumpeteers, "Just One Step" by Little Johnny Jones & The Little Jones Singers, "I Received My Blessing" by Radio Four, "Touch Me Lord Jesus" by Angelic Gospel Singers, "Give Me My Flowers" by The Consolers, "I Would Not Be A Sinner" by Dixie Nightingales, "Jesus Keeps Me Alive" by The Skylarks, "Sit Down Servant" by Swanee Quintet, "When Jesus Stays Home" by Southern Echoes Singers, and "Rest From My Labor" by Supreme Angels. 16 cuts in all – and very nicely done! ✨✧ Piero UmilianiGli Italiani E L'Industria (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Hardly the sort of industrial sounds you might not expect – not the noisy European mode of the 80s, nor even the sort of labor-conscious styles of the Folkways generation – and instead, a sweet batch of groovy, lively instrumentals with a strong 60s vibe – of the sort that makes us think that Italian factories must have been a pretty pleasant place to work at the time! The great Piero Umilian penned all the tunes – in the best manner of his film scores from the same time – and the music is conducted by Romolo Marcellini, for a television program that used all of the tunes – in a beautiful blend of organ lines, guitar, vibes, and other jazzy instrumentation. BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. Titles include "No More Games" by Larry Wedgeworth & Clique, "All In Good Time" by Wildlife featuring Vi Taylor, "Play It By Ear" by Cojo, "Get Up & Dance Don't Want No Party Poo Pershere" by Carrie Mims & Herbe Lee River Junction, "Feel The Music" by Dreamflight, "I Want Your Body" by Royale, "Free For All" by Second Wind, "I'm Gonna Get You (Meeow)" by Carrie Mims & Herb Lee River Junction, "You Make Me Happy" by Christopher Michael Band, "Keep It Comin On" by Gypsy, and "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics. 2CD set features one disc of the music in a continuous mix by Serge – the other with unmixed versions. 70s Polish fusion at its finest, served up by the always-tight Laboratorium – a group who know when to jam at the right points, but who can also lay back into a spacier groove as well! This album does a good job of mixing in plenty of keyboards – Fender Rhodes and Arp, juxtaposed nicely next to some acoustic piano which rounds out the sound and gives the record a bit more of an earthy feel underneath. The guitars are nice too – never over the top, and following the spacier lead of the keys to create some expansive electric soundscapes as the set rolls on. New sounds from Nigeria – a fantastically powerful single from Etuk Ubong! "Black Debtors" builds with this swirl of organ underneath very lively percussion – peppered with horns, then topped with fast-moving vocals that really send the whole thing home – all with energy that seems to go on a lot longer than usual for a 7" single! A beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! The album's a great summation of all the ideas that reedman Arthur Blythe was cooking up in the 70s underground – performed here with a hip group that includes Blythe on alto, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bobby Battle on drums, Bob Stewart on tuba, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Mohammad Abdullah on congas – some of them players who you might never have expected to be recording for Columbia Records! And yet the setting of the record doesn't interfere with their creativity at all – and instead, really seems to give Blythe and the group the sort of focus that only makes their ideas even better – on titles that include "Elaborations", "Metamorphosis", "Sister Daisy", "Shadows", and "The Lower Nile". ✨✧ Arthur BlytheElaborations/Light Blue/Put Sunshine In It ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – brought together in a 2CD set! First up is Elaborations – a beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! Light Blue is a wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". Put Sunshine In It is a record that really seems to live up to its title – as the sound here is maybe a little bit sunnier than on some of Arthur Blythe's previous albums! The record features heavy contributions from Todd Cochran – aka Bayete – who plays keyboards on most numbers, and introduces more of an electric vibe to the album than previous Blythe outings. The style isn't entirely fusion, but it's definitely warm and sunny – and Arthur responds as such with his solo work – a tight tighter and less edgey, but still nicely soulful. The album features a nice remake of the tune "Sentimental Walk" – from the movie Diva – plus the tracks "Uptown Strut", "Silhouette", "Put Sunshine In It", and "Tumalalumah". CD

A very cool collection that pays tribute to an explosive postwar decade in the French music scene – a time when the overseas market was really embracing the new styles of rock and soul from America and England, but also making some wonderful music of its own! The series does a great job of mixing up modes – so that you'll hear a French tune one minute, an English one the next – with an ever-evolving sense of styles as the series move on – especially as a lot more French material tends to dominate in the latter half of the 60s! ✨✧ Stan Getz5 Original Albums Vol 2 (Jazz Samba/Jazz Samba Encore/With Laurindo Almeida/Getz Gilberto/Getz Gilberto 2) (5CD set) ... CD
Verve (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
An insane collection of music – five albums that perfectly showcase the bossa nova genius of Stan Getz! First up is Jazz Samba – one of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a big early proponent of bossa nova rhythms, and had already been experimenting with them on his records of the time – yet also gets a key extra "umph" here in the presence of Stan's tenor – a bold, rich, soulful sound that really helps give the music a lot of direction – in ways that still resonate strongly all these many years later! Getz is completely sublime – a master of tone and timing throughout – and perfectly fit to these tunes. Rhythms are mostly from Byrd's trio, augmented with some extra percussion – and titles include the classic "Desafinado", plus "E Luxo So", "Samba Dees Days", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba De Uma Nota So", and "Baia". Jazz Samba Encore is hardly an "encore" of the first Stan Getz Jazz Samba album – as this set's got a slightly different feel, and lots of great elements that make it really unique! This time around, Brazilian musician Luiz Bonfa is on guitar – already a skilled proponent of the bossa by the time of the record, and arguably one of the few who really got it going back home in Rio. Stan's tenor sounds wonderful – as carefully and soufully blown as on the first set, but also with some new colors and tones too. Bonfa's wife Maria Toledo sings a bit on the record – hinting at Stan's work to come with Astrud Gilberto (this album was cut right before the Getz/Gilberto collaboration) – and the record also features added work on piano and guitar from the great Antonio Carlos Jobim – more than enough proof that the album's got a pure bossa pedigree! Titles include "Menina Flor", "Ebony Samba", "Saudade Vem Correndo", "Sambalero", "Samba De Duas Notas", and "Mania De Maria". With Laurindo Almeida is one of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of long tracks, and nice laid-back solos by both Getz and Almeida – who's getting in some of his few jazz licks of the 60s here, working in a groove similar to that of his earlier sides with Bud Shank, but which sounds almost even better in the languid company of Getz. Cuts include "Outra Vez", "Winter Moon", "Maracatu-Too", and "Samba Da Sahra". Getz Gilberto is a landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". Getz Gilberto 2 is a very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". Eden Ahbez & OthersWild Boy – The Lost Songs Of Eden Ahbez (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Bear Family (Germany), 1950s/1960s. New Copy Gatefold ... $28.99 31.99
A much-needed look at the untapped musical legacy of Eden Ahbez – the west coast mystic who's best remembered for delivering the song "Nature Boy" to Nat King Cole (legendarily walking in barefooted during a recording session!) – but who also made a range of other great music in the years that followed! Apart from "Nature Boy", and Ahbez's rare Eden's Island album from 1960, most of his other songs have fallen in in the shifting sands of time – but this record does a great job of digging up the best of the bunch, and presents them in a well-documented package that's much better than some of the public domain Eden Ahbez records that have hit the market. Song songs are by Eden, in a range of exotic vocal modes – others are by contemporaries, some in collaboration with Ahbez, some working on their own – and there's a great rante of trcks that icnlude "The Clam Man", "Umgowah", "India", "Child Of Nature", "Anna Was Mine (demo)", "Overcomers Of The World", and "Monterey" by Eden Ahbez – plus "Surfer John" by Nature Boy & Friends, "Wild Boy" by Mort Wise & The Wisemen, "Eden's Island" by Arthur Lyman, "Land Of Love" by Nat King Cole, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, and "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony. (Put together by the same guy who did Exotic World Of Eden Ahbez – but with different tracks, and even better sound!) LP, Vinyl record album

Laurie Anderson & Kronos QuartetLandfall ... CD
Nonesuch, 2018. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A beautiful collaboration between two of the most important forces in leftfield music in the early 80s – multi-media artist Laurie Anderson and modern string legends Kronos Quartet – coming together here in an extended Anderson composition inspired by the experience of Hurricane Sandy! It's been years since we've last heard from Laurie, and she's really returned to her roots here – still using her voice a bit, but also playing violin a fair bit too, along with keyboards, samples, percussion, and lots of her unusual filters and other electronic elements. Most selections are sort, and work together beautifully – almost in territory that might be described as a string quartet take on the modes of United States. Titles include "All The Extinct Animals", "Built You A Mountain", "Darkness Falls", "Dreams Translated", "The Water Rises", "Our Street Is A Black River", "Nothing Left But Their Names", "Thunder Continues In The Aftermath", "Old Motors & Helicopters", and "Everything Is Floating". A classic compilation – and we can't get enough of Horace Andy's sweet falsetto keening over these chugging, fat rhythms! A tremendous set of sides Andy cut in the mid-70s, packaged together with a few of the cuts in dub versions – all from a period when Horace was really hitting new heights in his music. While Andy cut many seminal sides for Coxsonne Dodd's Studio One – this work, some of it in collaboration with the great Bunny Striker Lee, stands among his best – and also often features Horace with firm creative control. Here he reworks the Studio One classic "Skylarking" as a "Better Version" with Lee, and there's a number of pieces cut at Tubby's with the aid of Prince Jammy (who contributed a nice sound to the In the Light set, also issued by Blood & Fire), like the massive "Pure Ranking" in it's full 8+ minute 12" disco mix version. Also includes the "Dub Vibes" version of the title track, "Mr Bassie", and "Reggae Rhythm – It's Gone International". CD

Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! The bonus tracks are "Jon" and "Don". CD

Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Joe Armon Jones sings and plays lots of cool Wurlitzer electric piano on this gem of an album – but the whole thing is maybe even more of a tribute to the warmly collaborative spirit of the contemporary London scene, as it is to the talents of the man himself! There's a nicely fluid sense of stardom here – as differing artists get their time to shine in the spotlight while others recede a bit from track to track – but not in the kind of "leader with guests" version of older soundsystem albums – and instead maybe more as a cosmic vision for the future. Other singers include Asheber, Big Sharer, Ego Ella May, and Oscar Jerome – and musicians include Dylan Jones on trumpet, Moses Boyd on drums, and Nubya Garcia and James Mollison on tenor. Titles include "Starting Today", "Almost Went Too Far", "London's Face", "Ragify", "Outro", and "Mollison Dub". CD

AztecaPyramid Of The Moon ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Very Good+ ... $33.99
A really special record from a really special group – one of two sublime 70s gems from Azteca – a wicked blend of jazz, funk, Latin, and soul – all put together by a young Coke Escovedo! Coke's ostensibly the leader of the group, but there's also a richly collaborative feel going on – a style that brings together jazz players like Tom Harrell on trumpet, Mel Martin on saxes, George Muribus on Fender Rhodes, and Flip Nunez on organ – and Latin players like Victor Pantoja on congas, Coke Escovedo on timbales, and Pete Escovedo on added percussion. In fact, the set's a key early example of the strength of the Escovedo family – and like their best later efforts, the set really stretches out and pushes the boundaries of conventional genres. There's also some great guest work from Lenny White on drums, Mike Nock on keyboards, and Neal Schon on guitars – and vocals are by a range of singers who really keep things fresh. Titles include "Red Onions", "Mazatlan", "Whatcha Gonna Do", "Mexicana, Mexicana", and "Love Is A Stranger". LP, Vinyl record album

Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part One (4th World War) ... CD
Motown, 2008. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". The 9th Wonder produced single "Honey" is an unlisted bonus track. CD

Gary BartzSingerella – A Ghetto Fairy Tale ... CD
Prestige/BGP (UK), 1974. Used ... $6.99
One of the last Gary Bartz albums for Prestige – and a really unique session with a different feel than some of his earlier work! Gary's still got plenty of angular funk in his sound here – thanks to some edgey keyboards from Hubert Eaves – but he's also tightened things up a bit without smoothing them out – cutting down on the longer jams in favor of a more focused approach, and singing himself on many cuts, taking on the quirky lyrical role that used to be held by Andy Bey! Bartz also produced the record himself, but Larry Mizell handled the final mix – giving the record a slightly spacier Mizell-inflected groove, but one that's not as full as on other Bartz/Mizell collaborations. The vocals here are all pretty great, and the album's filled with oddly-grooving tunes that really have a heck of a lot of charm – including the call-response track "Dozens", plus "I Don't Care", "Lady Love", "St Felix Street", "Nation Time", and "Blind Man". Buda (France), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
An even more fantastic album than the previous effort from this very cool combo – a set that has long tracks that really let the group build up their sound – all with a vibe that lives up to the cover proclamation of "music for the people by the people with the people"! That credo definitely comes through in the richly collaborative, strongly organic nature of the music – basslines and percussion that build up in this long-flowing wave of sound – with lead vocals that trade off with the group, all at a level that almost has the righteous energy of a spiritual jazz session of the 70s – but with a much more tribal vibe! There's a wonderfully positive spirit to the whole record, even if you can't follow the lyrics – and titles include the long cuts "Moya" and "Insimbi" – plus the shorter "Nobody Knows". If Paul's Boutique was the Beasties' psychedelic hip hop Sgt Peppers, then Check Your Head is their White Album – a raw, stylistically sprawling, yet always connected batch of live instrumentation – backing rhymes that range from stream of consciousness to expertly written. Check Your Head is also their first outing without the guidance of outside producers, though the trio did bring in a host of regular collaborators like Money Mark and Mario Caldato Jr, who work as well with the Boys as ever. It's stunning how far The Beastie Boys grew creatively over their first few albums, and this point is pretty close to perfection! Not just for completists! A nice, nice 3 CD package, with over 50 self produced tracks by one of the true innovators of the DJ form. Big Youth was almost single-handedly responsible for bringing conscious lyrics to the DJ trade, where his contemporaries were simply big-upping their own sound systems and chattting whatever it took to get the crowd moving. The first disc in the set is devoted to tracks cut in 1973, with a few early collaborations with producer Joe Gibbs, while the second 2 discs cover the periods of '73-'75 and '75-'79. You'll recognize a lot of the rhythms here, elevated by Jah Youth's righteous chanting, including "River Jordan", "Hot Stock", "Sky Juice", "Give Praises", "Every N*gger Is A Star", "Natty Universal Dread", "Wolf In Sheep Clothing" & "Jah Jah Love Them". Nat BirchallSounds Almighty ... LP
Tradition Disc (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A very different album than usual from the great tenorist Nat Birchall – a set that's no less soulful than his other records, but in a completely different way! The album's a collaboration with producer Al Breadwinner – and has this approach that feels like a lost Jamaican instrumental session from the start of the 70s – as if Nat's playing the role of saxophonist Tommy McCook over some nicely laidback Kingston-styled rhythms! Birchall solos on tenor on most tracks, but also blows a bit of melodica too – and even handles a bit of organ and percussion too – all swept up in a dubby mix handled by Breadwinner, who contributes drums, guitars, and keyboards. There's a bit of trumpet and trombone on the set too, plus baritone sax from Stally – and the quality of the record is excellent, every bit up to the range of the Jamaican legends listed as inspiration on the cover – a lineup that includes McCook, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, and Cedric Brooks. Titles include "In The Hills", "Ancient Wisdom", "Youth Iron Rock", "Freedom Style", "Amlak Dub", "Hail Don D Jr", and "Igziabeher". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Another Green World. James Brown gets a new injection of life at the end of the 80s – thanks to a collaboration here with Full Force, who wrote, arranged, and produced the album! The groove here is often more in a Full Force mode than you might expect from James – a full-on 80s urban sound, filled with plenty of beats at the bottom, yet still allowing The Godfather plenty of space to do his thing vocally! In a way, the format's almost a bit like some of the James Brown remix work that was showing up around the same time – except that the tunes are all new, and somewhat different territory for James. Capitol, 1981. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A wonderful album of breezy jazzy soul from the sweet voiced Sheree Brown! The record is one of two that Brown cut for Capitol, and it was produced by Richard Rudolph – husband and collaborator of the late Minnie Riperton – in the immediate years after Minnie's death, leading us to wonder if Rudolph was trying for another hit with a different female vocalist. This LP's got a bit of a Minnie Riperton-ish feel, but Sheree also brings a lot more to the session – including some nice guitar work, and a sophisticated soul style that's kind of in a Jean Carn mode. Features the wonderful jazzy stepper "It's A Pleasure", which has a compressed jazz funk groove, and bouncy vocals over the top. Buffalo SpringfieldWhat's That Sound – Complete Albums Collection (Buffalo Springfield/Buffalo Springfield Again/Last Time Around/stereo & mono) (5CD set) ... CD
Atlantic, Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $35.99 39.98
The complete albums of Buffalo Springfield – two of which are presented here in mono and stereo mixes, all supervised by Neil Young himself! First up is the self-titled Buffalo Springfield – a warmly collaborative record that would set the scene for countless work to come from the LA scene! Right from the start, there's something special going on here – a bit of the twang the Byrds were exploring at the time, and a very strong move past any sort of folk tendencies any of the group members might have had a few years before – but all without going into some of the too-sunny styles that were peaking in west coast pop. Instead, there's this current of darkness and subtle wit that really shines through – all without any psychedelic indulgence, and balanced perfectly amidst the guitars of Steven Stills, Richie Furay, and Neil Young – each of whom get a chance to sing on the record too. Bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin complete the group – and titles include the classic "For What It's Worth" – plus "Nowadays Clancy Can't", "Leave", "Pay The Price", "Burned", "Do I Have To Come Right Out & Say It", and "Everybody's Wrong". Next is Buffalo Springfield Again – a record that's way more than just "again" – that is, a recap of the first Buffalo Springfield classic – as the set not only has the group really exploding forward, but also the individual members taking these strong steps on their own that really point towards their big legacies to follow! Neil Young grabs us with darkness on the first tune, Richie Furay warms us with some country strains on the next, and Stephen Stills moves into a space that's very much his own on the next – yet throughout it all, the record has this sense of unity that really holds up over the years – giving us depth that makes the whole thing an amazing listen time and time again. There's some key help along the way – a bit of piano from Don Randi, electric piano from Jack Nitzsche, and even some recording help from Jim Messina – all furthering the warmth of the group's approach. Titles include "Mr Soul", "Sad Memory", "Hung Upside Down", "Good Time Boy", "Rock & Roll Woman", "Broken Arrow", "A Child's Claim To Fame", and "Expecting To Fly". Last up is Last Time Around – not just the last by Buffalo Springfield, it also really shows the key members striving for a solo voice of their own! The set was released after Buffalo Springfield had already broken up, and a number of the tracks within are near-solo projects handled by Neil Young, Richie Furay, and Stephen Stills – although there's also some of those great duets that really have the group spirit shining so strongly. Jim Messina produced, and really makes sense of the material together as a whole – on titles that include "It's So Hard To Wait", "Four Days Gone", "Carefree Country Day", "Special Care", "The Hour Of Not Quite Rain", "Questions", "I Am A Child", "On The Way Home", and "Kind Woman". 5CD package features new remastering right from the original tapes, supervised by Neil Young – and the mono version of the first album is different from the stereo, which has one less track! Also features mono and stereo versions of Buffalo Springfield again – and all albums come in original mini LP sleeves. CD

A pretty full-on group from the Virginia scene – one that comes on strong with a mix of funky drums, fuzzy guitar, bumping bass, and some great work on trumpet and keyboards! The groove here is almost a psychedelic take on jazz funk from years back – filtered into a very contemporary space, too – almost post-Medeski Martin & Wood, although nothing like that group at all – just in the kind of space that the new freedoms of recent years have opened up! In other words, these guys are pretty funky, but also not slavishly so – especially in any sort of retro mode – and although they're playing live here, there's an electric crackle to the whole proceedings that further ties their collaborative energy together. Gearbox (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Titles include "Tunnelvision", "Moses", "Cairo", "Tomahawk", "Lysol", and "Forest 2.0". LP, Vinyl record album

CameoFeel Me ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... About December 5, 2018
A great 80s groove from Cameo – but one that's still done in the group's best early funk ensemble mode! There's maybe a bit more emphasis on the basslines and keyboards than before, but the sound of the music is still wonderfully full and spontaneous – very much in keeping with the warmly collaborative look of the group on the cover, who really sound like they're having a hell of a lot of fun making the record! The rhythms have a razor-sharpness that just about nobody else can touch – and there's all these cool little instrumental flourishes that sneak into the mix and really keep things interesting – odd sounds on familiar instruments, moogy moments on keyboards, and even some vocal inflections that come as a nice surprise. There's two nice mellow cuts – "Feel Me" and "Is This The Way", which have a sweetly compressed harmony sound on the lyrics – and funky numbers include "Better Days", "Keep It Hot", "Roller Skates", and "Is This The Way". Elizeth Cardoso & Ciro MonteiroA Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Ciro Vol 1 ... LP
Copacabana (Brazil), 1966. Very Good ... $14.99
A beautiful set of duets from 60s samba stars Elizeth Cardoso and Ciro Monteiro – released in collaboration with the Bossaudade TV show! The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. Titles include "Melancolia", "Franqueza", "Beija-Me", "Se Acaso Voce Chegasse", and "Tem Que Rebolar". LP, Vinyl record album

Hi Hat, 1967. New Copy ... $16.99
Four slices of genius from this important German jazz festival of the 60s – one of the leading showcases for the best in avant garde and experimental music! The sounds here are as stunning as the lineup – maybe even more so, as there's some nicely-unfamiliar, surprisingly collaborative passages going on – all of which really illuminate the studio music by these groundbreaking artists! The set begins with "Andalusian Proverb" – a beautiful showcase for the dynamic vocals of Jeanne Lee, as she sings with Gunter Hampel on vibes, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and Pierre Courbois on drums. "Cubis" features a sublime trio with Marion Brown on alto, Peter Kowald on bass, and John Stevens on drums – and that rhythm duo also supports "Jepa", which features Mangelsdorff on trombone and Evan Parker on soprano sax – and "Relationship", which also features Parker – as well as Don Cherry on trumpet and Buschi Niebergall on second bass. One of the greatest things about Neneh Cherry in recent years is the way she's developed a strong sense of creative collaboration – which she definitely continues here, on a record done with great help from Keiran Hebden! Hebden produced, mixed, and co-wrote much of the set – and most of the music feels as if he's making contributions as well, although at a level that's quite different than most of his own music – almost as if the strong vocals and lyrics from Neneh helped unlock this really great corner of his talents, which get refocused on the record to also help bring a strong sense of vibrancy to Cherry's music as well – and almost have us rediscovering her all over again. Cherry and Hebden have worked together in the past, but there's really something different – and more soulful – going on here. Yale University Press, 2014. New Copy ... $12.99 65.00
A heady look at the life and work of Nam June Paik – the man who virtually invented video art at the end of the 60s, and went on to work in a range of other amazing media too! The core of the book features images from a large retrospective of Paik's career – stills from videos, drawings, sculptures, robots, and a range of other unusual items – plus photographs of so many of those important "moments" that graced Paik's career – those creative outbursts that could never be hung on a living room wall, nor resold over the years. There's some great shots of famous collaborations with cellist Charlotte Moorman – plus lots more we'd never seen too. The book also features essays on Paik by Bill Viola, Yoko Ono, and others – plus a few other writings on his work – and even a section of his own words too. Harcover, full color, and 190 pages. Book

Taschen, 2016. New Copy Book ... $53.99 69.99
Way more than just a book – a massive document of the American jazz scene, circa 1960 – presented in an unbelievably beautiful package! The edition brings together photos from legendary jazz imagist William Claxton (known best for his Pacific Jazz album cover shots), mixed with writings by German jazz journalist Joachim E Berendt – done in collaboration as part of a monumental trans-America trip at the start of the 60s. The book's filled with loads of rare photos – of jazz artists who include Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Muddy Waters, Gabor Szabo, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane – but almost even cooler are some of the "location" shots – non-celebrity photos that really capture the everyday life of the American jazz scene at the time. The package features a 552 page book, in a very handsome slipcase – super-heavy, and printed on beautiful paper with lots of lush color and black and white images! Book

A great collaboration between Linda Clifford and Isaac Hayes – done at a time when Hayes was really hitting his dancefloor stride! Ike's sound here is actually pretty great – arguably warmer and more deeply soulful than on some of Linda's other records from the time, and without too much drama. The style works wonderfully for Clifford's vocals – holding them in check and giving them great focus, especially on the midtempo numbers that sparkle with great instrumentation. Titles include "Shoot Your Best Shot", "I Had A Talk With My Man", "It Don't Hurt No More", "Red Light", "If You Let Me", and "I'm Yours". Al Cohn & Zoot SimsYou N Me ... CD
Mercury/Universal (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... About December 5, 2018
One of the best albums that Al Cohn and Zoot Sims ever cut together – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of their collaborations during the 50s and 60s! The set's got a nice small group feeling, and is a bit more open and relaxed than some of their RCA material – still in the sharp, thoughtful mode that marked both Cohn and Sims' sessions – but also a bit more earthy, too – possibly because they've got Mose Allison in the combo on piano. The album includes the incredible spare sax-only track "Improvisation For Unaccompanied Saxophones", which is an extremely haunting track that sounds unlike anything the pair had ever done together – and other titles have the full quintet playing, tunes that include "The Opener", "The Note" and "You N Me". Willie Colon & Ruben BladesLast Fight (remastered edition) ... CD
Fania, 1982. Used ... $19.99
A compelling later collaboration between Willie Colon and Ruben Blades – recorded as the soundtrack for a film that starred Blades as a boxer and Colon as his shady manager! The music's much better than the movie, though – and represents a mature meeting of these two talents from the 70s – reunited here in a style that's heavy on the trombone sounds of Colon's classics, and which has a nicely clean, clear sound overall – one that's a lot more personal and intimate than you might expect from the movie. Blades sings leads, but gets some cool chorus backings from Milton Cardona and Willie Colon – and Joe Torres plays a bit of Fender Rhodes in the backings, but these are mostly mixed low under the trombones. Titles include "What Happened", "Yo Puedo Vivir Del Amor", "Andanza", "Cimarron", "Y Tu Abuela", and "Venganza". CD

Alice Coltrane & Carlos SantanaIlluminations ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A really mindblowing collaboration between two of the most spiritual mainstream musicians of the early 70s – legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and spiritual jazz guru Alice Coltrane! The set came at a time when Santana was reaching for much deeper ideas in both his music and his personal life – and Coltrane turned out to be a perfect creative fit, as she'd already been down the path with her own music for years – and helps Carlos here find an incredible setting that really lets his new vision take flight! The album's a very collaborative effort – with Alice on piano, organ, and harp – but Coltrane also brings in some fuller arrangements on half of the tracks – really opening things up, alongside other musicians who include Jack DeJohnette on drums, Dave Holland on bass, Jules Broussard on soprano sax and flute, and Tom Coster on both acoustic and electric piano. The strings are sublime – as heavenly as on Alice's own records – and titles include "Angel Of Air Angel Of Water", "Bliss The Eternal Now", "Angel Of Sunlight", "Illuminations", and "Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism". Nicola Conte is completely at the top of his game here – showing us yet another level of his mighty jazz-based talents – some deeper spiritual currents than ever before, mixed with a good dose of global influences too! The record has Conte working with a hip Spiritual Galaxy ensemble, filled with key talents from labels that include Schema, Brownswood, and modern Blue Note – artists that are helping redefine the deepest currents of contemporary music, and who seem to soar even farther under the leadership of Nicola! There's vocals on most tracks – from singers who include Bridgette Amofah, Zara McFarlane, Carolina Bubbico, and Zoe Modica – but the album's equally heavy on the instrumental tip – as it includes performances from Logan Richardson on alto, Magnus Lindgren on tenor and flute, Theo Croker on trumpet, Pietro Lussu on keyboards, and Gianluca Petrella on trombone and moog. Gal CostaGal (1969) ... CD
Philips/Mercury (Brazil), 1969. New Copy ... $15.99
Heady heady work from the legendary Gal Costa – caught here right at her early best, smack dab in the middle of the Tropicalia years! The album's one of Gal's legendary collaborations with arranger Rogerio Duprat – and it's very much in the spirit of her other incredible session from 1969, but also features some even heavier and more tripped out guitar – in a way that really pushes the psychedelic aspect of the work! The sound here is really amazing – very fuzzy and freaky at times, in ways that make the album one of the most rocking sets of the entire Tropicalia scene, but in ways that still hang onto the quirky experimental qualities of work by Os Mutantes or Caetano Veloso. Gal's vocals really rip out amazingly at times – light years away from the sweet sound of the late 70s, and more in the frenetic, urgent style you'd expect from the politically-charged scene that spawned the set. Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil join Gal on a great version of "Pais Tropical", Jards Macale guest stars on the classic "Empty Boat" – and other tracks include "Tuareg", "Meu Nome E Gal", "Pulsars E Quasars", and "Cultura E Civilizaco". Bagual (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $22.99
A great little set from guitarist Yamandu Costa – one that follows in the legacy of previous albums of Brazilian guitar, but which also draws plenty of inspiration from the larger South American scene as well! Costa originally intended the set as a solo record, but soon found himself working in modes influenced by sounds from Colombia, Argentina, Cuba, Peruo, and Paraguay – which opened up a need to collaborate with a few other musicians alongside his deft work on the strings – Guto Wirtti on bass, Armando Marcal on percussion, Ernesto Fagundes on bombo, and Martin Sued on bandoneon. The different styles work together nicely as a suite – almost an acoustic guitar take on the Latin America recordings by Gato Barbieri in the early 70s – and titles include "Amigo Juan", "Chegada", "Mangore", "Scherzando", "Recanto", "Valdeos", "Paraguayta", and "La Catedral". Gronland (Germany), 1993. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Holger Czukay works here with many of his frequent musical partners – including Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebeziet, and Michael Karoli – but the album actually feels a bit more like his then-recent collaborations with David Sylvian – more concerned with subtle shifts in sound and space than the quirkier elements of most of Holger's albums from the 80s! There are vocals on the record, but they're not always the main attraction – and there's an overall deeper, darker texture to the whole record – with lots of shadowy elements in the production. While the Czukay approach of the previous decade might have been a lot of sharp shifts and cuts, this time around he's more working in a wide sonic palette that comes together as a cohesive whole. Yet these aren't outside, avant tunes – in which all players roam freely in space – and instead, they're melodic, rhythmic, very tuneful extrapolations that are often based on older standards – but which are so transformed, you can't really hear any roots of the originals – as the players take flight in that magical collaborative creation that marks jazz at its best! Funky drums and a whole lot more – a crackling Blue Note album from Chris Dave & The Drumhedz – maybe one of the few on the label to ever carry a parental advisory sticker! The sticker's well-placed, though – as Chris doesn't just drum, but also opens the door for a host of strong guest stars to provide plenty of lyrical content – a large lineup that includes Anderson.Paak, Bilal, Tweet, Sy Smith, Donald Rose, Krndn, Sir, Stokley Williams, Eric Roberson, Phone Coleman, Goapele, Anna Wise, Shafiq Husayn, and others – all of whom bring enough range of expression to match the energy of the Black Radio project from Robert Glasper! Like those records, this set's one that you never would have expected from Blue Note years back – but it's also a great example of the way the label's trying to find a new energy of expression in jazz – as Dave's drums work with keyboards from James Poyser, organ from Marcus Hodge, guitar from Isaiah Sharkey, and other great instrumental contributions from the likes of Keyon Harrold, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. The sound of the set is as diverse as its many collaborators – and titles include "Job Well Done", "Lady Jane", Trippy Tipsy", "Universal Language", "Rocks Crying", "Spread Her Wings", "Destiny N Stereo", "Clear View", "Atlanta Texas", "Whatever", "Sensitive Granite", "Cosmic Intercourse", "Dat Feelin", and "Black Hole". Miles DavisSketches Of Spain ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good- ... $14.99
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an important distinction to the way the album progresses.) Evans' arrangements have a majesty that takes the songs to the next level – working them as lush, lively backings for Davis' equally majestic trumpet solos, some of the finest he ever recorded with large group backing. Wonderful all the way through – and with the tracks "Concierto De Aranjuez", "Saeta", "The Pan Piper", and "Solea". LP, Vinyl record album
(6 eye stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has split seams and some light stains on back.)

Miles DavisTutu ... CD
Warner, 1986. Used ... $1.99
A nice collaboration between Miles and Marcus Miller from the latter part of Miles career. As much of the recording here is overdubbed, with many multiple instruments played by Miller, it doesn't have the improvised vibe of Miles' classic performances, but the songwriting and arrangements are head and shoulders above much of the contemporary jazz being recorded at the time, Miles is in great form, and the glossy production sits better with us now than ever before. Paulinho DaCosta, George Duke, Michael Urbaniak and Bernard Wright all make guest appearances. 8 tracks in all: "Tutu", "Tomaas", "Portia", "Splatch", "Backyard Ritual", "Perfect Way", Don't Lose Your Mind" and "Full Nelson". Miles Davis & Michel LegrandDingo ... CD
Warner, 1990. Used ... $1.99
A beautiful later album from Miles Davis – and a tremendous collaboration with composer Michel Legrand, in a set that returns Miles to the French soundtrack tradition he first started back in the late 50s! Some of the tracks here are quite spare – the kind of moody, ethereal solo moments that Miles still does better than most folks at this point in time – and other numbers feature fuller musical backings that echo some of the older Legrand soundtrack flair, but which come off with a slightly more contemporary approach too. Chuck Findley also handles some of the trumpet solos on the album – so all the musings here are not Miles' alone – and titles include "The Departure", "The Arrival", "The Dream", "Paris Walking I", "Going Home", "The Jam Session", and "Club Entrance". James Day Songs, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
James Day has always been one heck of a collaborative fellow – but this time around, he seems to be even more so than ever – as the album's overflowing with an insane amount of guests artists – a huge lineup that includes Gordon Chambers, Tony Terry, Audrey Wheeler, Glenn Jones, Sandra St Victor, Karen Bernod, Lalah Hathaway, Trina Broussard, U-Nam, Maysa, and others – soul singers both classic and contemporary, coming together here to bring a very joyous vibe to James' music! Many numbers feature more than one singer, creating a trading of vocals that really gives the record a lot of warmth – while Day handles the production and songwriting, sometimes with help from the other artists. Titles include "No Son Of Mine", "Forgiveness", "Battlegrounds", "Stand On My Shoulders", "Who Can Tell The Heart", "It's All Divine (Boogie Back mix)", and "Speak Love". A landmark album in harmony soul – one of those records that pushed the genre to a whole new level! The Delfonics emerge fully formed here as one of the most compelling groups of their time – a tremendous trio with a really unique approach to soul music – one that's heartfelt and heartbreaking, but never too sweet to be cloying or poppy – definitely just the right groove to keep things hip while also cracking the charts! The album's their first full collaboration with legendary producer Thom Bell – and it's got a sound that's summed up perfectly in the quintessential cut "La La Means I Love You" – and which is followed through beautifully on a batch of tracks that includes "Losing You", "Can You Remember", "You're Gone", "I'm Sorry", and "Break Your Promise". DelfonicsLa La Means I Love You/Sound Of Sexy Soul (plus bonus track) ... CD
Philly Groove/Kent (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Amazing work by The Delfonics – their first 2 albums, back to back on a single CD! La La Means I Love You is a landmark album in harmony soul – one of those records that pushed the genre to a whole new level! Sound Of Sexy Soul is an equally groundbreaking album of vocal group soul – right from the first note! The record kicks off with the sublime "Ready Or Not, Here I Come" – which starts with fierce stepping strings that are actually funky, then soars into some of the best harmonies the group ever put to record, superbly arranged by the great Thom Bell, who also wrote the track. As the album progresses, the sound expands further to encompass many elements that would become the blueprint for vocal groups over the next few years – like twangy electric sitar, cascading orchestrations, and pinched lead vocals that take a lot more chances than most group singers had been taking for years! There's still a bit of a 60s soul sound to some of the cuts, but the album's a watershed – not only for Thom Bell and the group, but for harmony soul as well! Titles include "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "My New Love", "Loving Him", "With These Hands", "Somebody Loves You", and "Everytime I See My Baby". CD also features the bonus track "You Got Yours & I'll Get Mine". CD

DellsFreedom Means ... LP
Cadet, 1971. Very Good ... $9.99
A stunning set from the mighty mighty Dells – a cool collaboration with the legendary arranger Charles Stepney and songwriter Terry Callier – and a record that shows just how far the group had come since their streetcorner harmony days! The vocals are incredible – that rich blend of deep notes and soaring highs that made The Dells one of the most technically amazing soul groups in the 70s – and Stepney's arrangements follow in the same mode as his work for their Dionne Warwick album, and his music for Minnie Riperton and Ramsey Lewis – with lots of groovy currents on the bottom and soaring strings on the top – sophisticated, but completely soulful too – at a level that nobody else can touch! Terry Callier wrote the original tunes "The Love We Had Stays On My Mind", "Freedom Means", "Melody Man", "Free & Easy", "Rather Be With You", and "It's All Up To You" – and the set also includes great remakes of "One Less Bell To Answer", "Make It With You", and "If You Go Away/Love Story". Paul DesmondTake Ten ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1963. Used ... $5.99
That's "Take Ten", not "Take Five" – a great title cut that echoes Paul Desmond's previous work with Dave Brubeck – but which then gives way quickly to some sweet bossa-styled grooves done with guitar from Jim Hall! The album's one of the strongest of the Hall/Desmond collaborations for RCA – A sublime showcase not just for Paul's impeccable alto, but also for the amazing tones and chromes that fly freely from the strings of Jim's guitar! Both players are set up with just a bit of gentle backing – light percussion from Connie Kay, and a bit of bass from Gene Cherico or Gene Wright. The whole thing's a well-conceived study in economy, as the two players craft sly and subtle lines around spare drum and bass backings – slowly hanging sound in space to weave a rich web of sound that's as compelling as it seems to be effortless! Titles include "Take Ten", "El Prince", "Embarcadero", "Samba De Orfeu", "Theme From Black Orpheus", and "Alone Together". CD

Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music – The Definitive Arthur Russell Sleeping Bag Recordings ... CD
Sleeping Bag/Get On Down, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... $15.99
An incredible album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! – fleshed out and expanded more than ever before by Sleeping Bag and Get On Down Records! The group's core sound is a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! This 2CD box set edition is amazing – coming in a heavy-duty box with each disc in an oversized gatefold style sleeve – and it includes more Arthur Russell collaborative and/or pseudonymous material for Sleeping Bag with or as Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn and Indian Ocean. Other tracks include "School Bell/Treehouse" (Indian Ocean), "You Can't Hold Me Down (Extended Version)" (Felix), "5 Minutes (R-r-r Radio Mix)" (Bonzo Goes To Washington) and more. Also includes a nice booklet of photos, artwork and artist testimonials – plus notes by Russell biographer Tim Lawrence. CD

Private (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $29.99
A totally amazing bit of modal jazz from the Santo Domingo scene – maybe the only jazz record we've heard from that city, and a performance that could easily take on some of the best spiritual jazz albums from the US! The group's co-led by pianist Dario Estrella and reedman Mario Rivera – and you can really feel that strong sense of collaboration – as Estrella lays out these long, pulsating lines – while Rivera really takes off on tenor, baritone, and flute! The group's also got a bassist, guitarist, and a lot of percussion – which makes for rhythms that are extremely powerful, with maybe some slight Latin inflections amidst the more spiritual energy. Titles include "Merceditas", "Sound Of A New World", "Jazz Merengue", and "Amen". LP, Vinyl record album

Exploding Star OrchestraStars Have Shapes ... LP
Delmark, 2010. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
The most amazing records to date from Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra – just the kind of cosmic, spiritual session you'd expect from the group's name – perfectly placed in a Chicago lineage that includes Sun Ra's Arkestra and the best years of the AACM! The group's got all the collaborative spirit of the latter reference – a largeish ensemble made up of some of the city's most important avant musicians in recent years – including Nicole Mitchell on flute, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass, Matt Bauder on clarinet and tenor, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, and Mike Reed and John Herndon on drums – all players who know each others strengths through countless gigs together – coming together under the visionary leadership of Rob Mazurek on cornet. There's some slight electro-acoustic elements, which further complicate the sound of the record – but all without ever taking it off base – and the whole thing's got a righteous sort of energy that makes us mighty proud that sounds this great came from our hometown.
