SpinnersYesterday Today Tomorrow/Labor Of Love ... CD
Collectables, 1977/1981. Used ... $9.99
2 lesser known albums by The Spinners – the first arranged by Thom Bell, the group's big supportive talent from the early days, the later arranged by Michael Zager, who's reaching a bit to try to give the group a more modern soul sound. Neither record is one of the group's finest – but overall, the CD's 14 tracks (3 are omitted from Labor Of Love, due to space restrictions) have enough good moments to show that The Spinners could still be going strong. The group's vocals are always a treat – even though there's not as many totally excellent tracks on the set – and titles include "I'm Riding Your Shadow", "You're Throwing A Good Love Away", "Honey I'm In Love With You", "Almost All The Way To Love", "Long Live Soul Music", "Give Your Lady What She Wants", "You're The Love Of My Life", and "I Found Love". Piero UmilianiGli Italiani E L'Industria (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Hardly the sort of industrial sounds you might not expect – not the noisy European mode of the 80s, nor even the sort of labor-conscious styles of the Folkways generation – and instead, a sweet batch of groovy, lively instrumentals with a strong 60s vibe – of the sort that makes us think that Italian factories must have been a pretty pleasant place to work at the time! The great Piero Umilian penned all the tunes – in the best manner of his film scores from the same time – and the music is conducted by Romolo Marcellini, for a television program that used all of the tunes – in a beautiful blend of organ lines, guitar, vibes, and other jazzy instrumentation. Titles include "Natascia", "Tempo Di Week-End", "Playtime", "Automatismo", "Microracing", "Negozi Alla Moda", "Coltura Virus", "Cibernetica", and "Rally Notturno". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousGive Me My Flowers – Powerhouse Gospel Music From The 50s & 60s On Nashboro Records ... LP
Nashboro/Third Man, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel recordings from the legendary Nashboro Records – one of the most important imprints for the music back in the 50s and 60s! We rank the work of Nashboro right up with the famous Houston-bred productions of Peacock Records – and as Peacock was part of the secular soul label Duke, Nashboro was also part of the blues powerhouse Excello – which means that the cuts here are put together at a level that's maybe got as much understanding of the needs of the record racks and jukebox scene, as they are aimed at the higher ideals of the lyrics! Nashboro excelled especially in the sorts of small vocal groups that can make gospel singles from this time every bit as much a slice of harmony heavy as rare doo wop tracks – and titles here include "Seven Angels" by The Trumpeteers, "Just One Step" by Little Johnny Jones & The Little Jones Singers, "I Received My Blessing" by Radio Four, "Touch Me Lord Jesus" by Angelic Gospel Singers, "Give Me My Flowers" by The Consolers, "I Would Not Be A Sinner" by Dixie Nightingales, "Jesus Keeps Me Alive" by The Skylarks, "Sit Down Servant" by Swanee Quintet, "When Jesus Stays Home" by Southern Echoes Singers, and "Rest From My Labor" by Supreme Angels. 16 cuts in all – and very nicely done! Flatiron Books, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great look at the birth of rock and roll – one that starts way earlier than most other histories, and then gets into a year-by-year format of chapters during the crucial moments! Ed Ward's not above leaning on the bigger names, but also does a good job of pulling out smaller strands in the history – especially moments that might not have seemed important at the time, but which stand as hallmarks for changes taking place, and much bigger shifts to come. Ward's been a rock historian for many years on NPR – and this book is definitely a labor of love – as this first volume is over 400 hefty pages. Hardcover, with a few images. Book

✨✧ John CorbettVinyl Freak – Love Letters To A Dying Medium ... Book
Duke University Press, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible look at the format of vinyl – put together by a guy who's got one of the hippest record collections we've ever seen! John Corbett's been writing about music, art, and other formats for decades – but his real labor of love is vinyl records – a format he continued to embrace even at the height of the CD era – so much so that he talked Downbeat magazine into letting him write a special column on musical delights that had never made it to the digital format! Corbett helped plenty of music get reissued on CD himself – thanks to countless label projects – but he also always held a special place in his heart for the kinds of records that never got reissued – and those are the sorts of titles featured here – a massive run of music that runs from jazz to funk, American and European, totally obscure to completely common – presented beautifully together in this massive book! The volume doesn't just bring together Corbett's columns, but also offers up full color reproductions of all the record covers, along with a few other details too – to support efforts on dozens of artists – a huge list that includes Melvin Jackson, Bill Leslie, Black Grass, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Phil Seamen, Khan Jamal, Klaus Doldinger, The Mad-Hatters, Tommy Jones, Guy Warren, The Three Souls, United Front, Johnny Lytle, London Experimental Jazz Quartet, Paul Smoker, AK Salim, Noah Howard, Jack Wilson, and many others – a good number of whom have yet to be reissued. The book is wonderful – and Corbett's longtime declaration of being a vinyl freak is more important than ever, given the rebirth of the medium! Book is 250 pages, softcover, with color images. Book

Arthur BlytheElaborations/Light Blue/Put Sunshine In It ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – brought together in a 2CD set! First up is Elaborations – a beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! The album's a great summation of all the ideas that reedman Arthur Blythe was cooking up in the 70s underground – performed here with a hip group that includes Blythe on alto, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bobby Battle on drums, Bob Stewart on tuba, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Mohammad Abdullah on congas – some of them players who you might never have expected to be recording for Columbia Records! And yet the setting of the record doesn't interfere with their creativity at all – and instead, really seems to give Blythe and the group the sort of focus that only makes their ideas even better – on titles that include "Elaborations", "Metamorphosis", "Sister Daisy", "Shadows", and "The Lower Nile". Light Blue is a wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". Put Sunshine In It is a record that really seems to live up to its title – as the sound here is maybe a little bit sunnier than on some of Arthur Blythe's previous albums! The record features heavy contributions from Todd Cochran – aka Bayete – who plays keyboards on most numbers, and introduces more of an electric vibe to the album than previous Blythe outings. The style isn't entirely fusion, but it's definitely warm and sunny – and Arthur responds as such with his solo work – a tight tighter and less edgey, but still nicely soulful. The album features a nice remake of the tune "Sentimental Walk" – from the movie Diva – plus the tracks "Uptown Strut", "Silhouette", "Put Sunshine In It", and "Tumalalumah". CD

New sounds from Nigeria – a fantastically powerful single from Etuk Ubong! "Black Debtors" builds with this swirl of organ underneath very lively percussion – peppered with horns, then topped with fast-moving vocals that really send the whole thing home – all with energy that seems to go on a lot longer than usual for a 7" single! "Collaboration Of Doom" has this fuzzy, almost evil bassline at the start – followed by loping percussion that's interwoven with a cool keyboard line – all to set the stage for a massive explosion of horns! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Sweet electric jazz from 70s Poland – a really tripped-out set of keyboard tunes, almost an Eastern European take on the Herbie Hancock sound of the time! The group's led by keyboard maestro Janusz Grzywacz – who works here on Fender Rhodes, acoustic piano, and a Roland 2000 – hitting styles that range from straight and funky to electric and spacey – as much concerned with the overall sound of the set as with his own spirited solo work – and coming across with a soulful sound that's almost George Duke-ish at times! A very cool collection that pays tribute to an explosive postwar decade in the French music scene – a time when the overseas market was really embracing the new styles of rock and soul from America and England, but also making some wonderful music of its own! The series does a great job of mixing up modes – so that you'll hear a French tune one minute, an English one the next – with an ever-evolving sense of styles as the series move on – especially as a lot more French material tends to dominate in the latter half of the 60s! The effect is almost like tuning into Paris radio during the year in the title – and it's no surprise that the whole thing was done as a project by Europe's Radio 1, in collaboration with Universal – at a level that's way better than some of those overstuffed schlockier hits package on the market. Eden Ahbez & OthersWild Boy – The Lost Songs Of Eden Ahbez (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Bear Family (Germany), 1950s/1960s. New Copy Gatefold ... $28.99 31.99
A much-needed look at the untapped musical legacy of Eden Ahbez – the west coast mystic who's best remembered for delivering the song "Nature Boy" to Nat King Cole (legendarily walking in barefooted during a recording session!) – but who also made a range of other great music in the years that followed! Apart from "Nature Boy", and Ahbez's rare Eden's Island album from 1960, most of his other songs have fallen in in the shifting sands of time – but this record does a great job of digging up the best of the bunch, and presents them in a well-documented package that's much better than some of the public domain Eden Ahbez records that have hit the market. Song songs are by Eden, in a range of exotic vocal modes – others are by contemporaries, some in collaboration with Ahbez, some working on their own – and there's a great rante of trcks that icnlude "The Clam Man", "Umgowah", "India", "Child Of Nature", "Anna Was Mine (demo)", "Overcomers Of The World", and "Monterey" by Eden Ahbez – plus "Surfer John" by Nature Boy & Friends, "Wild Boy" by Mort Wise & The Wisemen, "Eden's Island" by Arthur Lyman, "Land Of Love" by Nat King Cole, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, and "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony. High Note, 2012. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Two of the most soulful reedmen working today – blowing together beautifully in a great little set! Despite the combative title, there's a really warm, collaborative feel to the record right from the start – a setting that sparkles with all the deep tones we always love in Alexander's horn, and which seems to give Herring even more focus than usual – a sort of energy that we haven't heard in years on some of his other records! Tight rhythms are a good reason for the album's success – played by a trio that features Mike Ledonne on piano, John Webber on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – really setting fire to the reedmen, and letting them take off with long-stretching solos after some initial grooving on the heads of the tunes. Titles include "Timothy", "Inception", "Sukiyaki", "Pat N Chat", "Dig Dis", and "Here's That Rainy Day". CD

Way more than just an album with Gene Ammons as a leader – and instead, a set that truly earns the "all stars" listed on the cover – thanks to a great array of supporting players, and a very loose, open-ended jam session style that lets everyone get in plenty of solo space! Ammons' tenor is tremendous, but he's also a great collaborator here, too – working with Idrees Suliman on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Mal Waldron on piano, Art Taylor on drums, Doug Watkins on bass, and Ray Barretto on conga – in a mode that's maybe slightly tighter than some of the blowing sessions Prestige was doing at the time, but which still has that key longform creative energy that made the hardbop generation so great. Titles include "Blue Gene", "Scamperin", "Blue Greens n Beans", and "Hip Tip" – and all tracks are long, with plenty of focus on solos! LP, Vinyl record album

A classic compilation – and we can't get enough of Horace Andy's sweet falsetto keening over these chugging, fat rhythms! A tremendous set of sides Andy cut in the mid-70s, packaged together with a few of the cuts in dub versions – all from a period when Horace was really hitting new heights in his music. While Andy cut many seminal sides for Coxsonne Dodd's Studio One – this work, some of it in collaboration with the great Bunny Striker Lee, stands among his best – and also often features Horace with firm creative control. Here he reworks the Studio One classic "Skylarking" as a "Better Version" with Lee, and there's a number of pieces cut at Tubby's with the aid of Prince Jammy (who contributed a nice sound to the In the Light set, also issued by Blood & Fire), like the massive "Pure Ranking" in it's full 8+ minute 12" disco mix version. Thirsty Ear, 2003. Used ... $5.99
Jazz pianist Matthew Shipp meets the late experimental hip hop crew for a unique long player – sort of a sequel to Shipp's earlier collaboration with DJ Spooky – this being the far superior of the two! The group's approaches couldn't be more different, and the contrast is what really makes the record a winner – Shipp lays out spare, crackling live jazz with bassist William Parker, vibes player Kahn Jamal, drummer Guillermo E Brown and occasional trumpet by Daniel Carter, while Beans and Priest provide overlapped programmed electro-modeled beats, blips, and freestyle rhymes. If you heard and liked Jason Moran's hip hop conscious Modernistic CD, but wished Moran's lonely piano arrangements stepped to the next level into actual hip hop – this one's for you! 9 tracks, several crossing the 5 minute mark for a nice, langorous feel: "Staph", "Places I've Never Been", "Slow Horn", "A Knot In Your Bop", "SVP", "Coda", Stream Light", Monstro City", "Free Hop", and "Real Is Surreal". Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! The bonus tracks are "Jon" and "Don". CD

Count BasieOn My Way & Shoutin Again – Count Basie Plays Music By Neal Hefti ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good- ... $1.99
A wonderful album of 60s Basie – one that focuses on the writing and arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti's one of our favorite soundtrack composers of the decade, but in the years before his film fame, he was a frequent partner of Basie – and this album marks one of their greatest collaborations together. The tunes are very much in the "loud, then soft, then loud" mode that Hefti pioneered with Basie's angular group of the 50s – but they've also got some of the warmer, more whimsical touches that Neal would explore more fully in his later soundtrack work too. The result is a classic Basie session, but with plenty of surprises – featuring a fresh batch of tunes that includes "Jump For Johnny", "Ducky Bumps", "Rose Bud", "Shanghaied", "Together Again", and "Eee Dee". An even more fantastic album than the previous effort from this very cool combo – a set that has long tracks that really let the group build up their sound – all with a vibe that lives up to the cover proclamation of "music for the people by the people with the people"! That credo definitely comes through in the richly collaborative, strongly organic nature of the music – basslines and percussion that build up in this long-flowing wave of sound – with lead vocals that trade off with the group, all at a level that almost has the righteous energy of a spiritual jazz session of the 70s – but with a much more tribal vibe! There's a wonderfully positive spirit to the whole record, even if you can't follow the lyrics – and titles include the long cuts "Moya" and "Insimbi" – plus the shorter "Nobody Knows". If Paul's Boutique was the Beasties' psychedelic hip hop Sgt Peppers, then Check Your Head is their White Album – a raw, stylistically sprawling, yet always connected batch of live instrumentation – backing rhymes that range from stream of consciousness to expertly written. Check Your Head is also their first outing without the guidance of outside producers, though the trio did bring in a host of regular collaborators like Money Mark and Mario Caldato Jr, who work as well with the Boys as ever. It's stunning how far The Beastie Boys grew creatively over their first few albums, and this point is pretty close to perfection! Titles include "Jimmy James", "Pass The Mic", "Gratitude", "Finger Lickin' Good", "So Whatcha Want", "Time For Livin'", "Something's Got To Give", "Groove Holmes" and "Professor Booty". Lakecia BenjaminRise Up ... CD
Ropeadope, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is even more smoking here than on her previous album for Motema – much more from the streets, as you might guess from the album! Benjamin handles all the sax solos, and composed the music as well – but the set's a very collaborative effort, and is filled with strands of soul and hip hop as well – a nicely gritty blend of the elements that avoids any of the hoke you'd find on a major label project of this nature, cooked up in the studio in North Jersey! The album cover oddly doesn't list song titles – but we can tell you that there's a total of 13 tracks in all – which makes for a very solid record. CD

✨✧ Paul Bley/Jimmy Giuffre/Steve SwallowLife Of A Trio – Saturday ... CD
Owl/Mesa Bluemoon, 1989. Used ... Just Sold Out!
With players like these, the life of a trio must be a great one – and the album's one part of a two-day recording session done by pianist Paul Bley, bassist Steve Swallow, and saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre! The "trio" tag is somewhat misleading at times – because the album's often a gathering of all three players in the studio, rather than a continuous collaborative effort. Some tracks have a single player, working alone – while others sneak in a duet, and others then follow a trio format – and the album's a great illustration of the sharp talents that all players still had at this point in their career! Giuffre's especially great – and works here on both clarinet and soprano sax – and given that Swallow had been a key part of Jim's trio in years back, many moments often sound like a revival of the more "out" Giuffre trio sides, with the addition of Bley's great tones on piano. This first volume features the "Saturday" recordings – with 12 titles that include "Endless Melody", "Foreplay", "Black Ivory", "Owl Eyes", "Clarinet Zone", and "By The Way". CD

Luiz BonfaSolo In Rio 1959 (aka A Violao De Luiz Bonfa – with bonus tracks!) ... CD
Cook/Smithsonian Folkways, 1959. Used ... $5.99
An amazing early album from Brazilian guitar virtuoso Luiz Bonfa – originally recorded by the audiophile Cook Laboratories on a Nagra recorder – in a spare, stripped-down, "in the field" sort of style! There's an intimacy here that's missing from some of Bonfa's studio sessions from the same period – and Luiz responds wonderfully by playing some of his most intricate lines on guitar – all recorded here with amazingly precise sound. Despite the lack of a proper studio, the fidelity is superb – and honestly, the album's got a quality that ranks it with Bonfa's best records ever! Titles include "Luzes Do Rio", "Shearing", "Murder", "Variacoes Em Violao", "Seringueiro", and "Song De Orpheo". Plus, the CD features 14 bonus tracks, great remastering, and a wonderful 32 page booket! CD

His voice is fragile and wonderful here, playing with frequent collaborator Emett Kelly on bass and guitar, Cheyenne Mize on violin and slide ukulele and Chris Rodahaffer on banjo and guitar. Joao BoscoCaca A Raposa ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1975. Very Good+ ... $38.99
Maybe one of the best-remembered albums from the legendary 70s run of Joao Bosco – a set that manages to bring together jazzy instrumentation, samba rhythms, folksy elements, and a whole new level of songwriting – all in a blend that beautifully announces Bosco's genius to the world! There's a level of expression here that rivals Caetano Veloso or Ivan Lins – and like those giants of Brazilian music, the sound here is almost Bosco's genre unto itself – a wonderfully strong expression of new ideas, done in close collaboration with songwriter Aldir Blanc. Cesar Camargo Mariano handles arrangements and keyboards – which makes for more than a few jazzy and groovy moments – especially on the cuts "Nessa Data" and "Casa De Marimbondo", plus the classic "Kid Cavaquinho". RCA, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Another Green World. The balance is beautiful – stark and dark on one half, then airy and spacious on the next – handled without any sense of gimmickry, and a bold mainstream experiment that still resonates strongly today. The record's a stunning batch of sophisticated sides, done in collaboration with Roberto Menescal, and with help from Jobim and MPB4! The album builds on the style of Buarque's excellent late 60s songwriting, and adds in some of the more complicated approaches to arrangement that were being developed in Brazil at the end of the 60s – in a way that pushes Chico's work to the next level, and which makes this record sit right up there with work at the time by Jobim or Edu Lobo. A beautiful love letter to the Detroit jazz scene from pianist Greg Burk – not the famous motor city jazz world of the postwar years, but a really special time in the 90s when things were a bit more underground – and when Burk spent some formative years in the city! The notes recall some amazing days of warmth and collaboration with Detroit musicians – and the music here was all composed during that time, and really sparkles with the spirit that Burk speaks of in the notes – this soulful, lyrical, immediately personal flow between his piano, the bass of Matteo Bortone, and the drums of John Arnold. The compositions are wonderful – music that will really have us paying attention to Greg's skills as a writer – and titles include "Cass & Palmer", "Jangle", "Scene Unseen", "Matins", and "Woodward Stride". American cities were going through tremendous changes in the 60s and 70s – changes that not only had an impact on local citizens, businesses, and municipal forces – but also on the art community as well! This book showcases a tremendous response to urban upheaval by artists in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles – presenting images of artworks created during the decades, and also photographic documents of performances, demonstrations, and other creative activities – sometimes juxtaposed against mainstream media, and balanced with a huge amount of text by the authors. The range of material in here is tremendous – the Chicago section alone is mindblowing – and the book also features contributions from other writers who include Paula Massood, Josh Glick, Eric Avila, Max Page, Leslie Wilson, and others. The book is 271 pages, with color and black and white images throughout – and was done in collaboration with the Princeton Art museum. Book

A pretty full-on group from the Virginia scene – one that comes on strong with a mix of funky drums, fuzzy guitar, bumping bass, and some great work on trumpet and keyboards! The groove here is almost a psychedelic take on jazz funk from years back – filtered into a very contemporary space, too – almost post-Medeski Martin & Wood, although nothing like that group at all – just in the kind of space that the new freedoms of recent years have opened up! In other words, these guys are pretty funky, but also not slavishly so – especially in any sort of retro mode – and although they're playing live here, there's an electric crackle to the whole proceedings that further ties their collaborative energy together. Chocolate City, 1980. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A great 80s groove from Cameo – but one that's still done in the group's best early funk ensemble mode! There's maybe a bit more emphasis on the basslines and keyboards than before, but the sound of the music is still wonderfully full and spontaneous – very much in keeping with the warmly collaborative look of the group on the cover, who really sound like they're having a hell of a lot of fun making the record! The rhythms have a razor-sharpness that just about nobody else can touch – and there's all these cool little instrumental flourishes that sneak into the mix and really keep things interesting – odd sounds on familiar instruments, moogy moments on keyboards, and even some vocal inflections that come as a nice surprise. There's two nice mellow cuts – "Feel Me" and "Is This The Way", which have a sweetly compressed harmony sound on the lyrics – and funky numbers include "Better Days", "Keep It Hot", "Roller Skates", and "Is This The Way". The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. Fania, 1982. Used ... $14.99
A compelling later collaboration between Willie Colon and Ruben Blades – recorded as the soundtrack for a film that starred Blades as a boxer and Colon as his shady manager! The music's much better than the movie, though – and represents a mature meeting of these two talents from the 70s – reunited here in a style that's heavy on the trombone sounds of Colon's classics, and which has a nicely clean, clear sound overall – one that's a lot more personal and intimate than you might expect from the movie. Blades sings leads, but gets some cool chorus backings from Milton Cardona and Willie Colon – and Joe Torres plays a bit of Fender Rhodes in the backings, but these are mostly mixed low under the trombones. A really mindblowing collaboration between two of the most spiritual mainstream musicians of the early 70s – legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and spiritual jazz guru Alice Coltrane! The set came at a time when Santana was reaching for much deeper ideas in both his music and his personal life – and Coltrane turned out to be a perfect creative fit, as she'd already been down the path with her own music for years – and helps Carlos here find an incredible setting that really lets his new vision take flight! The album's a very collaborative effort – with Alice on piano, organ, and harp – but Coltrane also brings in some fuller arrangements on half of the tracks – really opening things up, alongside other musicians who include Jack DeJohnette on drums, Dave Holland on bass, Jules Broussard on soprano sax and flute, and Tom Coster on both acoustic and electric piano. The strings are sublime – as heavenly as on Alice's own records – and titles include "Angel Of Air Angel Of Water", "Bliss The Eternal Now", "Angel Of Sunlight", "Illuminations", and "Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism". Heady heady work from the legendary Gal Costa – caught here right at her early best, smack dab in the middle of the Tropicalia years! The album's one of Gal's legendary collaborations with arranger Rogerio Duprat – and it's very much in the spirit of her other incredible session from 1969, but also features some even heavier and more tripped out guitar – in a way that really pushes the psychedelic aspect of the work! The sound here is really amazing – very fuzzy and freaky at times, in ways that make the album one of the most rocking sets of the entire Tropicalia scene, but in ways that still hang onto the quirky experimental qualities of work by Os Mutantes or Caetano Veloso. Gal's vocals really rip out amazingly at times – light years away from the sweet sound of the late 70s, and more in the frenetic, urgent style you'd expect from the politically-charged scene that spawned the set. A compelling collaboration between percussionist Andrew Cyrille, vocalist Jeanne Lee, and alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons – one of the freer sessions on the Black Saint label, and one of the most striking as well! Cyrille handles a wide range of percussion – and also a few whistles too – and he really sets the tone with his open, expressive approach to his instruments – almost more melodic at points than rhythmic, with echoes of African roots that come through more strongly than on some of his other albums. Lee's vocals are nicely understated, as always – and she also delivers a bit of recitation as well – and Lyons' raspy tone really helps to further deepen the soul of the set. Yet these aren't outside, avant tunes – in which all players roam freely in space – and instead, they're melodic, rhythmic, very tuneful extrapolations that are often based on older standards – but which are so transformed, you can't really hear any roots of the originals – as the players take flight in that magical collaborative creation that marks jazz at its best! The sticker's well-placed, though – as Chris doesn't just drum, but also opens the door for a host of strong guest stars to provide plenty of lyrical content – a large lineup that includes Anderson.Paak, Bilal, Tweet, Sy Smith, Donald Rose, Krndn, Sir, Stokley Williams, Eric Roberson, Phone Coleman, Goapele, Anna Wise, Shafiq Husayn, and others – all of whom bring enough range of expression to match the energy of the Black Radio project from Robert Glasper! Like those records, this set's one that you never would have expected from Blue Note years back – but it's also a great example of the way the label's trying to find a new energy of expression in jazz – as Dave's drums work with keyboards from James Poyser, organ from Marcus Hodge, guitar from Isaiah Sharkey, and other great instrumental contributions from the likes of Keyon Harrold, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. The sound of the set is as diverse as its many collaborators – and titles include "Job Well Done", "Lady Jane", Trippy Tipsy", "Universal Language", "Rocks Crying", "Spread Her Wings", "Destiny N Stereo", "Clear View", "Atlanta Texas", "Whatever", "Sensitive Granite", "Cosmic Intercourse", "Dat Feelin", and "Black Hole". Miles DavisAll Miles – The Prestige Albums (14CD set) ... CD
Prestige/Universal (Italy), 1950s. New Copy 14CD ... $59.99
A beautiful way to experience the early work of Miles Davis – all 14 of his 50s albums for Prestige Records, presented in a special box that contains each album in a tiny replica LP-styled sleeve! The music here is the stuff of legend – trumpet material that really transformed the way the instrument was used in jazz – as Davis really comes into his own as a leader, after time spent recording with Charlie Parker, and doing a bit for Blue Note – then really taking off in the full length space offered by the album format on Prestige! Some of these sets feature classic collaborations with the young John Coltrane, and others include work with Sonny Rollins on tenor, Milt Jackson on vibes, and JJ Johnson on trombone – as well as the famous rhythm section of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums! Some CDs feature bonus tracks from the OJC versions – and the albums include Dig, Miles Davis & Horns, Collectors Items, Blue Haze, Walkin, Bag's Groove, Miles Davis & The Modern Jazz Giants, Musings Of Miles, Miles Davis Quintet/Sextet, New Miles Davis Quintet, Steamin, Workin, Relaxin, and Cookin. Miles DavisMiles Davis At Carnegie Hall – The Legendary Performance Of May 19, 1961 ... LP
Columbia, 1961. Very Good ... $39.99
Sparkling live work from Miles Davis – and a set that captures both sides of his talents on Columbia at the time! Half the material features a smoking quintet – with Hank Mobley on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and the other half of the date features a larger orchestra led by Gil Evans – in the modern mode that make the Miles/Evans collaborations sound so great on some of the pair's studio records! Together, the material offers up a beautiful live portrait of Davis' early 60s genius – allowed a bit more space to roam in the live setting, on titles that include "So What", "New Rhumba", "Lament", and "No Blues" – all taken at a bit of a faster clip than in the studio, as Miles was wont to do in a live performance! Columbia, 1958. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Way more than just a simple version of work from Porgy & Bess – and instead, a key collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans – done with a sound that really transforms the tunes! True, the work here is all based on George Gershwin's original compositions – but through his inventively modern arrangements, Gil Evans really pushes the familiar numbers to a whole new place – and Miles glides over the top with some especially shimmering solos! Titles include "Summertime", "The Buzzard Song", "I Loves You, Porgy", and "Fishermen, Strawberry, & Devil Crab". LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisSketches Of Spain ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good- ... $19.99
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an important distinction to the way the album progresses.) Evans' arrangements have a majesty that takes the songs to the next level – working them as lush, lively backings for Davis' equally majestic trumpet solos, some of the finest he ever recorded with large group backing. Wonderful all the way through – and with the tracks "Concierto De Aranjuez", "Saeta", "The Pan Piper", and "Solea". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice collaboration between Miles and Marcus Miller from the latter part of Miles career. As much of the recording here is overdubbed, with many multiple instruments played by Miller, it doesn't have the improvised vibe of Miles' classic performances, but the songwriting and arrangements are head and shoulders above much of the contemporary jazz being recorded at the time, Miles is in great form, and the glossy production sits better with us now than ever before. James Day Songs, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
James Day has always been one heck of a collaborative fellow – but this time around, he seems to be even more so than ever – as the album's overflowing with an insane amount of guests artists – a huge lineup that includes Gordon Chambers, Tony Terry, Audrey Wheeler, Glenn Jones, Sandra St Victor, Karen Bernod, Lalah Hathaway, Trina Broussard, U-Nam, Maysa, and others – soul singers both classic and contemporary, coming together here to bring a very joyous vibe to James' music! Many numbers feature more than one singer, creating a trading of vocals that really gives the record a lot of warmth – while Day handles the production and songwriting, sometimes with help from the other artists. Titles include "No Son Of Mine", "Forgiveness", "Battlegrounds", "Stand On My Shoulders", "Who Can Tell The Heart", "It's All Divine (Boogie Back mix)", and "Speak Love". Philly Groove/Kent (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Amazing work by The Delfonics – their first 2 albums, back to back on a single CD! La La Means I Love You is a landmark album in harmony soul – one of those records that pushed the genre to a whole new level! The Delfonics emerge fully formed here as one of the most compelling groups of their time – a tremendous trio with a really unique approach to soul music – one that's heartfelt and heartbreaking, but never too sweet to be cloying or poppy – definitely just the right groove to keep things hip while also cracking the charts! The album's their first full collaboration with legendary producer Thom Bell – and it's got a sound that's summed up perfectly in the quintessential cut "La La Means I Love You" – and which is followed through beautifully on a batch of tracks that includes "Losing You", "Can You Remember", "You're Gone", "I'm Sorry", and "Break Your Promise". Sound Of Sexy Soul is an equally groundbreaking album of vocal group soul – right from the first note! The record kicks off with the sublime "Ready Or Not, Here I Come" – which starts with fierce stepping strings that are actually funky, then soars into some of the best harmonies the group ever put to record, superbly arranged by the great Thom Bell, who also wrote the track. As the album progresses, the sound expands further to encompass many elements that would become the blueprint for vocal groups over the next few years – like twangy electric sitar, cascading orchestrations, and pinched lead vocals that take a lot more chances than most group singers had been taking for years! There's still a bit of a 60s soul sound to some of the cuts, but the album's a watershed – not only for Thom Bell and the group, but for harmony soul as well! Titles include "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "My New Love", "Loving Him", "With These Hands", "Somebody Loves You", and "Everytime I See My Baby". CD also features the bonus track "You Got Yours & I'll Get Mine". CD

✨✧ Paul DesmondTake Ten ... LP
RCA, 1963. Very Good ... $12.99
That's "Take Ten", not "Take Five" – a great title cut that echoes Paul Desmond's previous work with Dave Brubeck – but which then gives way quickly to some sweet bossa-styled grooves done with guitar from Jim Hall! The album's one of the strongest of the Hall/Desmond collaborations for RCA – A sublime showcase not just for Paul's impeccable alto, but also for the amazing tones and chromes that fly freely from the strings of Jim's guitar! Both players are set up with just a bit of gentle backing – light percussion from Connie Kay, and a bit of bass from Gene Cherico or Gene Wright. The whole thing's a well-conceived study in economy, as the two players craft sly and subtle lines around spare drum and bass backings – slowly hanging sound in space to weave a rich web of sound that's as compelling as it seems to be effortless! Titles include "Take Ten", "El Prince", "Embarcadero", "Samba De Orfeu", "Theme From Black Orpheus", and "Alone Together". LP, Vinyl record album

Dr JohnRemedies/Desitively Bonnaroo ... CD
Atlantic/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Two funky classics from Dr John – back to back in a single set! First up is Remedies, one of the records that made Dr John a legend back in the day – a set that steps off from New Orleans roots into a world of weird funk, tripped-out sounds, and lots and lots of super-heavy grooves! The album's got a nicely exploratory vibe – as the first side features shorter funky cuts, but the second half really stretches out, and features a side-long track that has the Doctor at his most freewheeling – mixing deep currents from soul and blues with all the great ear for studio techniques he'd developed over the years – fused into a sound that's almost a fantasy of a soulful subculture in the swamps. Titles include "Loop Garoo", "Wash Mama Wash", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Mardi Gras Day", and "Chippy Chippy" – plus the side-long "Angola Anthem". Desitively Bonnaroo is filled with tight funky work from Dr John – a second collaboration with producer Allen Toussaint, and a set that follows strongly on their Right Place record of the year before! The groove's not as messed-up as on the first few Atlantic records by the Doctor – but in it's place is a sweet electric funk mode, kind of an update on 60s New Orleans grooves – handled here by The Meters and a host of other key players from the Crescent City scene! Toussaint's production and arrangements are tight, but never slick at all – still much earthier than the later work, especially that on Warner Brothers, that was handled by the producer. And the tunes have a good focus that keeps Dr John on track lyrically – even though we'll admit that our main love of this record comes from the keyboards, bass, and funky drums! Titles include "Stealin", "What Comes Around (Goes Around)", "Mos' Scocious", "Rite Away", "R U 4 Real", "Let's Make A Better World", "Sing Along Song", "Go Tell The People", "Quitters Never Win", and "Can't Git Enuff". Pye/Morello (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $8.99
Two later solo albums by solo Everly Brother Phil – presented with bonus tracks too! First up is There's Nothing Too Good For My Baby – also issued in the US as Phil's Diner – an album recorded in London, as part of his new label deal with Pye Records – but also has the kind of close-up setting that really showcases his maturation as a singer/songwriter! There's few hints here of the work that Phil recorded with his Everly Brother in the 60s – but that evolution's also a nice thing too – as Everly is almost a completely different artist here, working to deliver some beautiful tunes that have him finding a very individual voice, produced in an understated way that still keeps things very close to home. Titles include "Summershine", "Feather Bed", "We're Running Out", "Caroline", "There's Nothing Too Good For My Baby", "New Old Song", and "Goodbye Line". Mystic Line is a sharply contemporary set from Phil Everly – and music that's quite different than the Everly Brothers sound of a decade before! Part of the album's strength comes from a young Warren Zevon – who plays keyboards and handled the arrangements – really finding himself after previous time in the Brothers' band, but here very much shaping the sound of Phil as a solo act, with that mix of sensitivity and bite that he would bring to his own solo classics in the late 70s. Most tracks are originals by Everly, one a collaboration with Zevon – and titles include "Patiently", "Words In Your Eyes", "Better Than Now", "Friends", "When Will I Be Loved", "You & I Are Like A Song", and "January Butterfly". CD features bonus tracks "Baby You Know Me" and "The Three Bells". CD

Spring, 1977. Very Good ... $5.99
A fantastic bit of funk from Fatback – and one of those records that still makes us scratch our heads, and say "Man, how can they make music this tight?" The sound is impeccable – bass and drums really right on the money, with a focus that's a huge influence on countless acts to come – and this wonderful way of still being loose and fluid, while being impeccably played – hardly the too-uptight sounds you might get from other stiffer funk acts of the second half of the 70s! There's a really organic, collaborative feel to the whole groove – which also comes across in the way the vocals are laid down – almost as if the whole group's stumbling onto the lyrics at once through their musical inspiration – on killer cuts that include "Spank The Baby", "NYCNYUSA", "Cosmic Woman", "Double Dutch", and "Soul Finger". Tony Allen is at the head of the Africa 70 – and his rhythms are already incredibly complex, but always right on the money – mixed with heavy tenor from Igo Chico, great electric piano lines, and a fiercely collaborative sense of energy that makes every move of the entire group come together as one. Geffen, 1980. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A record that some might call the last truly great Peter Gabriel album – and a key cap to his excellent initial solo run! The album's got a deeper feel than before – slightly richer colors, more spiritual themes, and arguably more of a sense of majesty – almost an echo of some of the Native American modes explored by Laurie Anderson, who was then a recent collaborator of Gabriel! Instrumentation builds a bit more than before – with less guitars in parts, more percussive bits, and some funkier elements at the bottom that aren't exactly funky – more just a punch in force from the ground up. Gabriel's definitely feeling a sense of power here – and titles include "Lay Your Hands On Me", "Shock The Monkey", "San Jacinto", "I Have The Touch", "The Family & The Fishing Net", and "The Rhythm Of The Heat". Atlantic, 2017. New Copy ... $7.99 13.98
Fantastic sounds from Charlotte Gainsbourg – a singer we first fell in love with through her father, the famous Serge – but who we've really come to love tremendously over the years – both through her work on screen and in the studio! Charlotte's got this sense of presence that's unlike anyone else at all – on film she's a complete individual, and on record she's very much the same – even while also echoing everything that made both Serge and Jane Birkin so great back in the day! This set has Charlotte working with collaborator Sebastian on most tracks – often in a musical mode that has spare rhythms, bass, and keyboards in the background – almost befitting the slight 80s look of the cover, but never in any sort of easy retro mode at all. The approach is a personal reinvention of an earlier generation of French sounds – and titles include "Lying With You", "Kate", "Deadly Valentine", "Rest", "I'm A Lie", "Dans Vos Airs", and "Les Crocodiles" – as well as the song "Songbird In A Cage", which features guest work from Paul McCartney – and "Sylvia Says", which features lyrics by Sylvia Plath. An incredible collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot – one of Serge's first duet albums ever – and a gem all the way through! In the year before he cut "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" with Jane Birkin, Serge recorded this great album with Brigitte Bardot in which he worked out many of the same ideas. The album is probably best known for the track "Bonnie & Clyde" – which has been sampled to great fame over the years – but there's loads of other great tracks on here, with a mix of styles that joins Serge's jazzy years with his softcore 70s work – very cool, very groovy, and years ahead of its time. Some tracks are duets, and some are sung individually by Serge or Brigitte, but they're all great, and titles include "Intoxicated Man", "L'eau A La Bouche", "Un Jour Comme Un Autre", "Comic Strip", and more! Arrangements by Alain Gourager, Michel Colombier, and Claude Bolling – and the cover's got a great shot of Serge & BB as Bonnie & Clyde! CD

Serge Gainsbourg & Jane BirkinJane Birkin – Serge Gainsbourg (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fontana/Light In The Attic, 1969. Used Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A landmark collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and actress Jane Birkin – his paramour at the time, and a much younger woman! The pair come together beautifully here in a set of sensuous duets – tunes that have an open, honest approach to the relations between the sexes – yet never in any sort of cliched late 60s hippie-esque ways. This album is perhaps the archetypal Gainsbourg erotic effort – and it's filled with wonderful duets set to breathy, bouncy orchestrations – tunes that forged a whole new "adult" level in pop music – not just in France, but around the globe! The arrangements are amazing, and feature some of the weirdest instrumentation ever heard on a pop record – especially one that was as successful as this. Backings are by Athur Greenslade – and titles include the classic "69 Annee Erotique" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus", plus "Jane B", "Elisa", "Orang Outan", "Les Sucettes", and "Manon". The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very much on the mind of Marvin during his troubled years of the mid 70s. The whole thing's beautifully put together – superbly orchestrated with just the right funky touches, and even a sweet bit of electronics to give the set a nice edge. An amazing album – one of those soul records that goes deeper and deeper than you ever thought pop music could go – filled with great tracks that include "I Want You", "After the Dance", "Come Live With Me", and "Since I Had You". Verve (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $19.99
An insane collection of music – five albums that perfectly showcase the bossa nova genius of Stan Getz! First up is Jazz Samba – one of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a big early proponent of bossa nova rhythms, and had already been experimenting with them on his records of the time – yet also gets a key extra "umph" here in the presence of Stan's tenor – a bold, rich, soulful sound that really helps give the music a lot of direction – in ways that still resonate strongly all these many years later! Getz is completely sublime – a master of tone and timing throughout – and perfectly fit to these tunes. Rhythms are mostly from Byrd's trio, augmented with some extra percussion – and titles include the classic "Desafinado", plus "E Luxo So", "Samba Dees Days", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba De Uma Nota So", and "Baia". Jazz Samba Encore is hardly an "encore" of the first Stan Getz Jazz Samba album – as this set's got a slightly different feel, and lots of great elements that make it really unique! This time around, Brazilian musician Luiz Bonfa is on guitar – already a skilled proponent of the bossa by the time of the record, and arguably one of the few who really got it going back home in Rio. Stan's tenor sounds wonderful – as carefully and soufully blown as on the first set, but also with some new colors and tones too. Bonfa's wife Maria Toledo sings a bit on the record – hinting at Stan's work to come with Astrud Gilberto (this album was cut right before the Getz/Gilberto collaboration) – and the record also features added work on piano and guitar from the great Antonio Carlos Jobim – more than enough proof that the album's got a pure bossa pedigree! Titles include "Menina Flor", "Ebony Samba", "Saudade Vem Correndo", "Sambalero", "Samba De Duas Notas", and "Mania De Maria". With Laurindo Almeida is one of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of long tracks, and nice laid-back solos by both Getz and Almeida – who's getting in some of his few jazz licks of the 60s here, working in a groove similar to that of his earlier sides with Bud Shank, but which sounds almost even better in the languid company of Getz. Cuts include "Outra Vez", "Winter Moon", "Maracatu-Too", and "Samba Da Sahra". Getz Gilberto is a landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". Getz Gilberto 2 is a very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". Ghostface Killah & Adrian YoungeTwelve Reasons To Die (Instrumentals) ... LP
Soul Temple, 2013. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Ghostface Killah and Adrian Younge team up for this most intriguing artist and producer/composer collaboration – one with a promising concept and they deliver in full – shadowboxing their way to a knockout! Adrian Younge and his Venice Dawn group lay down the sounds – with dusty soul and funk, naturally – but what really pushes this one to a superior level are the unpredictable and ingenious nods to 70s Italian film scores, particularly in the giallo genre. Spooky, echoey keyboards and occasional angelic female backing vocals elevate the vibe and balance the grit. The instrumentals version is even more explicit in it's debt to giallo – with all titles translated to Italian: "Attenzione Al Stare", "L'Aumento Dell'Abito Nero", "Dichiaro Guerra", "Sangue Sull'Acciottolato", "Una Chiamata Inattesa", "Il Corpo Sicuro", "Dodici Ragioni Per Morire" and more. ✨✧ Johnny Griffin & Eddie Lockjaw DavisTough Tenors ... LP
Jazzland, 1960. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Another one of the great Griffin/Davis collaborations from the early 60's, and a tight bit of work with the added appearance of Junior Mance on piano. The two of them manage to ride a groove that straddles the hardbop and soul jazz camps, and they groove along nicely, with well delivered solos that are as good as Griff's best work on his own from the time, and much more lively than a lot of Davis' work as a leader from the late 50's. Cuts include "Funky Fluke", "Twins", and "Tickle Toe". LP, Vinyl record album

Hall & OatesAbandoned Luncheonette ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good ... $7.99
A wonderful step forward for the team of Hall & Oates – and a set that has them moving more into soul than ever before! The album's a tremendous collaboration with the legendary Arif Mardin, who takes the pair's well-crafted vocals into territory that's much more slinkily soulful than some of their previous records – that sound that was always lurking in the background, never quite right, but which emerges here fully in that classic 70s Hall & Oates mode. Daryl and John seem to harmonize more here than before, and the backings are still somewhat rockish, but have a warmth that really suits their singing. We can't argue with the sublime brilliance of "She's Gone", one of those tracks that we've heard a bazillion times, but never cease to respect – and other titles include "Everytime I Look At You", "Had I Known You Better Then", "When The Morning Comes", and "Laughing Boy". Takayuki HamadaChronique Michel Legrand – De Ses Debuts A Aujourd'hui ... Book
Rittor (Japan), 2017. New Copy ... $32.99
A beautiful book on the decades of recorded output from one of our favorite composers ever – the legendary Michel Legrand – an artist known to most folks for his famous soundtracks of the 60s and 70s – but also a jazz musician, singer, and even a very groovy instrumental arranger! All those many aspects of Legrand's music are brought together here wonderfully – in a rich discography that's done in a similar style to some of the Japanese jazz discographies in our racks – but with maybe even a wider-ranging approach, given that Legrand's records were issued in so many countries over so many years! The style here is familiar if you know those other discographies – each record gets a listing with a reproduction of the cover in color, plus release date, label, catalog number, and even songs and other details. The book also features short reviews of many of the records, and longer text on Legrand – all of which is in Japanese – but the volume also balances things out beautifully for non-Japanese readers, with lots of photos and other beautiful images. The soundtrack section is especially great, as it also includes lots of rare singles and EP releases – and the book also features chapters on Legrand's jazz work, his vocal releases, live records, collaborations, musicals, and arrangements for a huge amount of singers. There's even a special sleeve gallery at the back, with lots more rare album covers in full color – and even a listing of all his scores for films. A beautiful book if you love Michel Legrand as much as we do – 255 pages, with loads of beautiful full color images! Book

Johnny HammondBreakout ... LP
Kudu, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A massive groover from the great Johnny Hammond – the famous 60s organist from the soul jazz scene, getting a whole new sound for the 70s here on the CTI label! Johnny was always one of those players who was ready to try something new – and the open, extended format of the label really helps him find new energy after his previous albums – to a level that points at his collaborations with Larry Mizell in years to come. The record's got arrangements by Grover Washington and Leo Johnson – on tracks that feature a complicated set of rhythms that push past the straighter funk grooves of Johnny's Prestige years. Drums and bass dance around nicely at the bottom, tenor and trumpet groove out the melody, and Johnny washes across the whole thing with some widemouth action on the organ! Titles include "Blues Selah", "Workin On A Groovy Thing", and "Breakout". LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie HancockImagine Project ... CD
Hancock, 2010. Used ... $4.99
An all-star effort from Herbie Hancock – like his previous record, a set that's filled with guest appearances from really dynamic range of talents! This collaborative change in Herbie's later years is a real surprise, and it's definitely helped him explore music with the sort of freedom to genre-step that he had back in the 70s – maybe not as cutting edge as in those days, but still surprisingly strong at the core. India Arie sings on a version of "Imagine", which also features Konono and Jeff Beck; John Legend and Pink sing on "Don't Give Up"; Ceu is on "Tempo De Amor"; The Chieftains play on "The Times They Are A Changing"; Los Lobos and Tinariwen are on "Tamatant Tilay/Exodus", Dave Matthews sings and plays on "Tomorrow Never Knows"; James Morrison guests on "A Change Is Gonna Come", and Chaka Khan, Wayne Shorter, and Anoushka Shankar all appear on "The Song Goes On". Herbie Hancock & Foday Musa SusoVillage Life ... CD
Columbia, 1985. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An early world music/jazz collaboration production from Bill Laswell, a format he'd return to again and again in later years. For the most part, the tunes seem to be excursions on Musa Suso's native Gambian rhythms, plucked out as gentle arpeggios on the Kora, with Herbie's subtle keys and synths complementing nicely. Our favorite though is the Hancock somposition "Early Warning", a spacious keyboard piece with delicate accompaniment by Musa Suso. Includes three other pieces "Moon/Light", "Ndan Ndan Nyaria" and "Kanatente". CD

Ben Harper/Charlie MusselwhiteGet Up! (deluxe edition with CD & DVD) ... CD
Stax, 2013. Used CD & DVD ... $7.99
The first full length collaboration between blues, soul and rock slide guitar eclecticist Ben Harper and harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite – and it's win for both – with a vibe that's rooted in many traditions, but feels right at home in both Harper's and Musselwhite's wheelhouses. We expected a blues & soul covers set when we first heard that this project was in the works – and while the prospect of these 2 fellows working together on the classic Americana songbook sounds like a pretty good idea to us – we're actually all the more impressed with this all originals take on classic styled craft. A bit of blues and blues rock, a bit of gospel, and a bit of southern styled folk soul – and a bunch of great songs! It's a full band set up for the most part, too, as opposed to a spare duos set – and the titles include "Don't Look Twice", "I'm In I'm Out And I'm Gone", "We Can't End This Way", "You Found Another Lover (I Lost Another Friend), "I Ride At Dawn", "Get Up!", "She Got Kick", "Blood Side Out" and "All That Matters Now". Deluxe edition comes with a bonus making-of DVD with additional live versions of a few of the tunes! CD

Michael HendersonTake Me I'm Yours – The Buddah Years Anthology ... CD
Buddah/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The great Michael Henderson is a hell of a talent in 70s soul – an artist that some folks know for his more way-out work on bass with Miles Davis, or his early vocals with Norman Connors – but also a singer, arranger, and key creative talent – one who followed the same path as Connors, by moving from jazz to super-sophisticated soul! Henderson's music really took shape in the second half of the 70s – which is the territory covered by most of this collection – a great look at the artistic flowering of Henderson on the Buddah label, with a few key collaborations thrown in for good measure too. The 2CD set features 34 tracks in all – all with that wonderful sense of track selection that always makes these Soulmusic.com sets so great – and titles include early tracks recorded with Norman Connors – "You Are My Starship", "Valentine Love", and "We Both Need Each Other" – and duets, with Roberta Flack on "At The Concert", and a post-Connors performance with Phyllis Hyman on "Can't We Fall In Love Again". Other titles include "Time", "Make Me Feel Better", "In The Night Time", "Am I Special", "To Be Loved", "Do It All", "Be My Girl", "Solid", "Treat Me Like A Man", "Stay With Me This Summer", "Whip It", "Goin Places", "Let Me Love You", "Take Me I'm Yours", "Wide Receiver", "Playing On The Real Thing", "Riding", "Reach Out For Me", "Slingshot", "Fickle", "Come To Me", "Geek You Up", "Make Me Feel Like", and "Make It Easy On Yourself". Gaby HernandezSpirit Reflection ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A fantastic record from Gaby Hernandez – a singer we've loved for previous collaborations with Build An Ark and Life Force Trio – but who really knocks it out of the park with this double-length set! The presentation is a bit unusual – in that the entire album is presented with vocal versions of the songs, then a second instrumental take on the tracks – the latter a great showcase for the album's many collaborators – a heavy-duty lineup that features Kamasi Washington, Carlos Nino, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Dexter Story, and the Contact Field Orchestra! Gaby's vocals really sine in all this great company – and the musicians have ways to deepen the spirit of her songs, and take things in places that still make us love the music, even after her voice has dropped out. Titles include "Spirit Reflection", "Into Yoa", "Super Nova Lovers", "Baobab Tree", "Messy Love", "Los Mas Dulce", "Stay A While", and "Entranced". CD

Buck HillBuck Stops Here ... CD
Muse, 1990. Used ... $6.99
Damn great tenor work from Buck Hill – recording here in a well-matched combo that also features the great Johnny Coles on trumpet! Coles' sound is really nice at this point in his career – a bit more biting and human than the polish of some previous sides – in ways that sound especially great when he's wailing in the frontline next to Hill's raspy tenor. The rhythm section has plenty of life too – Barry Harris on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums – and producer Houston Person brought a nice sense of "room" to the session, recording these guys in ways that beautifully showcase their collaborative presence. Titles include "Brakes", "Wip Wap", "Someone Like That In Your Life", "RH Blues", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". CD
