✨✧ Gato BarbieriChapter Four – Alive In New York ... CD
Impulse, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Searing live work from Gato Barbieri – a brilliant little album that follows on the spirit of his other Latin America sessions for Impulse! The format here is similar to those studio outings – an organic blend of percussion, keyboards, and sax – all bubbling together in a highly rhythmic mode that easily shifts between electric and acoustic statements, all in a jazz-based pursuit of older Latin American rhythms and expressions! Eddie Martinez plays some great Fender Rhodes on the album – ringing out with warm tones that are strongly offset by Gato's sharp-edge tenor lines – and all tracks are nice and long, and flow with a sense of creative energy that almost surpasses the studio albums in the series! Titles include "Milonga Triste", "La China Leoncia", "Baihia", and "Lluvia Azul". CD

✨✧ Pete TerraceSabrosa Y Caliente (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Melodias (Colombia), Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rock-solid cooker from Pete Terrace – one of the few cats who could always come up with the goods! The set's got a strong charanga vibe overall – a bit different than some of Terrace's more jazz-based records, but still done with the tight approach to rhythms that made Pete one of the key cats to explore the small combo modes in the changing 60s years of Latin – in styles here that borrow all the energy of the bigger groups, but find a way to make things even leaner and meaner overall! Titles include "Pachanga Para Ti", "Si Si", "Kilimanjaro", "Ay Mama Inez", and "Baila La Pachanga". CD also features some bonus tracks from the Viejos Para Buenos album – including "Now", "El Pito", "La Negra Sanda", "Mi China", and "Gozala". CD

✨✧ Tito PuenteParty At Puente's Place – On Broadway/Mambo Diablo ... CD
Concord, 1983/1985. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
2 different albums from Tito Puente – nicely packaged here in a single set! On Broadway is not really a "Broadway" album, as you might guess from the title – although Tito and group do play a version of the soul hit "On Broadway" on the set – but a nicely-honed set with a strong Latin jazz groove, much more back to basics than some of Tito's work from the 70s. Players include Ray Gonzales, Jorge Dalto, Afredo De La Fe, and Jerry Gonzales – and tracks include versions of Freddie Hubbard's "First Light", Milton Nascimento's "Soul Song", and Toots Thieleman's "Bluesette" – as well as the originals "Jo Je Ti" and "TP's Especial". Mambo Diablo is a stone cooker from Tito Puente's great back to basics years of the 80s – a time when he was really moving towards the Latin jazz of his roots – working without any singers, or any contemporary gimmicks, and letting loose with tight combos and top-line jazz players! This set features Puente on vibes, timbales, and percussion – grooving nicely with the great Sonny Bravo on piano, whose bold lines definitely help shape the grooves – giving them plenty of New York 60s pulse, alongside work by Jimmy Frisuara on trumpet and trombone, Mario Rivera on soprano and tenor, and Ray Gonzalez on trumpet. Bobby Rodriguez handles bass, and Johnny "Dandy" Rodriguez brings in added percussion with congalero Jose Madara – and tracks include "Take Five", "Mambo Diablo", "Pick Yourself Up", "Eastern Joy Dance", "China", and "No Pienses Asi". Leon ThomasBlues & The Soulful Truth ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
Leon Thomas takes his vocals to new heights – moving past the straight spiritual jazz modes of his work with Pharoah Sanders, to embrace a whole host of new styles too! There's a slight trace of the blues promised in the title, but always inflected through a more soulful approach overall – thanks to backings arranged by Pee Wee Ellis – known best for his work with the James Brown band of the late 60s! Pee Wee handles reed solos on the tunes, and the group also features some great work on keyboards from Neal Creque – from Pucho's band – plus some guitar from Cornell Dupree and Larry Coryell. Yet Thomas is clearly the main attraction – sounding beautifully expressive at that level that no other jazz singer could ever hope to touch – that genre-starting style that continues to amaze us after all these years. Titles include the classic "China Doll" – plus "Love Each Other", "Boom Boom Boom", "Gypsy Queen", and "Shape Your Mind To Die". CD

David Boykin ExpanseSolar Suite ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2006. New Copy ... $6.99 8.99
A set recorded many years back by Chicago spiritualist David Boykin – but one that's finally getting its debut on record, as part of the ever-evolving rich tapestry of sounds that Boykin's been giving us since the 90s! The set here captures David at a key moment – when he was maybe turning towards even more spiritual currents from more outside performances – working with an excellent lineup that features Nicole Mitchell on flute, Josh Abrams on bass, James Baker on piano, Mike Reed on drums, Renee Baker on violin, Chinatsu Nakano on alto, and Shirazette Tinnin on congas. Both Abrams and Reed are also at key points of their development, and together with Boykin and Mitchell, they beautifully point the way forward for a new generation of Chicago expression. The piece is one long live performance, over 45 minutes in length – with segments that include "Midnight", "Sunrise", "Herukhuti", and "Enocturnal Sun". CD

✨✧ Bob DylanWitmark Demos – 1962 to 1964 – The Bootleg Series Vol 9 ... CD
Columbia, Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Somehow, someway, Bob Dylan and Columbia Records can keep returning to the well of unreleased material – and draw jaw droppingly brilliant recordings that are mostly unheard to the general population of non Dylan diehard archaeologists! Here lies the fabled Witmark Demos – early recordings of treasured Dylan classics and rarities alike recorded raw and unencumbered, just Dylan's voice, guitar and occasional harmonica or piano – recorded in 1962 for Leeds Music (a few) and M. Witmark & Sons (most of 'em) in the early-to-mid 60s. Dylan was one of the first wave of 60s folk songwriters brought into the Tin Pan Alley machinations, a pretty amazing moment considering that this gruff, nasal voiced figure was soon to revolutionize popular music and there's no way Witmark could have known it. Hey, maybe this kid will make us a few bucks in the urban folk racket, eh? Wow. Of course many of these songs would be recorded by a who's who of 60s & 70s singers of all stripes, but it's always great to here Dylan's own early, raw sketches. Some of the performances come somewhat close to the way Dylan would cut them for his own landmark albums with just a bit more polish, others are close(ish) to how they sounded in earlier Dylan "bootlegs" (officially and not so official), and most of it has never been officially released commercially. Columbia continues the terrific Official Bootleg Series with a thick booklet of rare photos and notes by Colin Escott. Includes versions of "Hard Times In New York Town", "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", "Ballad Of Hollis Brown, "Long Time Gone", "Farewell", "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", "Girl From North Country", "Only A Hobo", "Guess I'm Doing Fine", "Mr Tamborine Man", "I'll Keep It With Mine" and many more. 47 tracks on 2 CDs. Masahiko SatoBelladonna ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
One of the rarest albums ever from the mighty Masahiko Sato – a Japanese musician we love for his jazz, funk, and psychedelic sounds – all of which come into play on this unusual animated soundtrack! The music is plenty trippy right from the start – very offbeat, from the instrumentation to the production to the pacing – never in a mode that's too avant, but which is very much its own thing – as Sato weaves a way forward with cool spacey keyboards, slow-brooding basslines, and these dreamy vocals from singer Chinatsu Nakayama! Some moments feel like the best funky electric Italian sound library material of the time – but there's also a lot more going on, too – including some of that great style Sato would use on other albums, when he'd blend psychedelic inspiration with very groovy jazz. Titles include "Funny Feeling", "Mr London", "Andy Warhol", "Belladonna", "The Notice Is Notice", "Take It Easy", and "TBSF". LP, Vinyl record album

An album that bristles with color right from the very first note – thanks not just to work from Bobby Shew on trumpet and flugelhorn, but also Gordon Brisker on tenor and flute, and Bill Mays on both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! The group is one that cut a few great albums around this time – almost out of time in their approach, as they're neither back to tradition jazz albums, nor inflected with any sort of 70s funk or fusion elements either – just focused, well-done material that features a fair bit of original compositions by group members too! Titles include "Run Away", "Navarro Flats", "Class Reunion", "Kachina", and "She's Gone Again". CD

✨✧ KlangTea Music ... CD
Allos Documents, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful combination of vibes and clarinet, played by this ultra-hip Chicago quartet – in styles that echo some of the best modern jazz modes of the late 50s! Despite a contemporary-looking cover, and a "tea" title that might make you think of a chillout set – the record has a really fresh, creative sort of feel – almost like uncovering a lost recording that paired the vibes of Teddy Charles and clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre sometime near the end of the 50s – with lots of cool tones and unusual rhythms throughout, and the great sonic sensibilities you might expect from Charles or Giuffre. The group features Jason Adasiewcz on vibes, James Falzone on clarinet, Jason Roebke on bass, and Tim Daisy on drums and percussion – and titles include "GFOP", "Fickle", "Lament On Ash Wednesday", "Last Love Song", "China Black", "Dwarfs", "Giants", and "No Milk". ✨✧ Andy BeyTuesdays In Chinatown ... CD
12th Street/Warlock, 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite moments from that great Andy Bey comeback in his later years – a time when the singer returned to recording after too much time away from the studio – and with a rich quality that offers a maturing version of the music he gave us in the 60s and 70s! At some level, Bey is a straighter jazz singer here – but he's also blessed with one of the most distinct vocal styles of anyone we can think of, and flows over the tunes with a majesty that's maybe only rivaled by Jon Lucien on his seminal recordings for RCA. The group is full of excellent players – Steve Turren on trombone, Marty Erlich on flute and bass clarinet, Peter Washington on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – plus piano from Andy himself. Titles include a great version of the Milton Nascimento tune "Bridges" – plus "Fragile", "I'll Remember April", "Tuesdays In Chinatown", "Feelin Low Down", "In A Mist", and "Saidas E Bandeiras". CD

Atlantic/Collectables, 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jazz in romantic places, but some pretty groovy ones too – a host of global destinations all referenced in the track selection for the set! Dave Pell's tenor is at the lead on most numbers, but the octet's in fine formation too – arranged by Jack Montrose, Marty Paich, Johnny Mandel, and Shorty Rogers – the last of whom also produced the album, and manages to give it the same sort of feel as his own great sets for Atlantic at the time! The style is prime west coast 50s – with a classic cover to match – and players include Bob Gordon on baritone sax, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Ray Sims on trombone, and Donn Trenner on piano and celeste. Titles include "New Orleans", "Flying Down To Rio", "Paris In The Spring", "Memphis In June", "Isle Of Capri", "Shuffle Off To Buffalo", "On A Slow Boat To China", and "London In July". CD

A really moody record from Barry Thomas Goldberg – a singer from the Minneapolis scene, formerly of the group Batch – stepping out into very personal, moody territory of his own – with a vibe that's completely different than that earlier group! The set mostly features vocals and acoustic guitar – but with a sensitive quality that's hardly folk at all – and maybe more at the level of some of the best productions by Joe Boyd at Island Records, using a subtle sense of sound to evoke mood and moment in all the right ways! Michael Yonkers produced, and is equally responsible for the wonderful quality of the whole thing – on titles that include "Hollywood", "China Doll", "Pop & Ice", "City Rain", "Magic Cloud", "Golden Sun", and "Stars In The Sand". Contemporary, 1954/1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully laidback album from Barney Kessel – gentle guitar stepping around familiar standards, but all with a hip sort of west coast 50s flavor! The main group on the album features Bob Cooper on oboe and tenor, Claude Williamson on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – but a few extra tunes, added to expand the full LP from the original 10" session, feature Hampton Hawes on piano and Red Mitchell on bass – plus the rest of the other group. Titles include "Speak Low", "Love Is Here To Stay", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "On A Slow Boat To China", "Barney's Blues", "A Foggy Day", "Prelude To A Kiss" and "64 Bars On Wilshire" – obviously not a standard! ✨✧ Sun RaVisits Planet Earth/Interstellar Low Ways ... CD
Saturn/Evidence, Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 lost classics by Sun Ra on one CD! Visits Planet Earth features music that was recorded by The Arkestra in Chicago in 1957 and 1958. Some of the tracks are from the same session as the Sound Of Joy LP, and a few others were from sessions later in the year. Ra plays piano and "solar piano", and the group's got some added percussion and tympani. Along with the usual suspects, James Spaulding also sits in with the group on a few tracks, playing both alto and flute. Titles include "Eve", "Overtones Of China", "Two Tones", and "El Viktor". Interstellar Low Ways is a record that features material was recorded in 1959 and 1960, but unissued until the mid 60's. Ra plays piano, chimes, and gong, and the tracks have a nice laid back spacey feel, with some ensemble vocals chanted by the group. Ronnie Boykins also plays the space gong on one cut, which sounds very nice. Cuts include "Somewhere In Space", "Space Loneliness", "Space Aura", and "Interplanetary Music". CD

Kent (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classy, but never snoozy – as the set's got a top-shelf assortment of Northern Soul dancefloor numbers all the way through! As with the first volume, this batch of tunes is a really well-done collection – one that gets way past all the dodgy compilations and Northern Soul bootlegs on the market, and which features some incredibly rare tunes and previously unissued numbers – all hand-picked for the set by Ace/Kent's in-house soul maestro Ady Croasdell! A few of the names on the collection are familiar ones, but they're represented here by numbers that we'd never heard before – and the bulk of the CD features tunes by artists that are even lesser-known, even to fans of the genre. 24 tracks in all, with notes on every tune by Ady – and titles that include "I Finally Got Wise" by Billy Keen, "It Ain't' What I Do" by Peggy Paxton, "Faith & Understanding" by The Magicians, "Two Lovers" by The Voice Masters, "I'm Waiting" by Bill Bush, "I Can't Speak" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "How I Need Your Love" by The Extremes, "Just A Bad Thing" by Janice Christian, "Dining In Chinatown" by Jennifer Wells, "You Got What You Want" by The Angels, "Would You Believe" by William Hunt, "Sea Shells" by The Charmells, "She Could Love Me" by The Athens Rogues, and "Jerk Baby Jerk" by Carl Burnett & The Hustlers. Searing rockabilly work from the Texas scene of the late 50s – all work that came from the powerhouse TNT label out of San Antonio, and the related Marathon Records too! These cuts aren't country twangers, and are instead definitely the kind of raw early rockers that this series does such a good job of tracking down – really wonderful numbers that we never would have heard otherwise, and which explode with the same sort of energy that must have made them fantastic to hear from some backroom jukebox in a small corner tavern! As with the other volumes, there's very detailed notes within, and label scans too – the kind of package that makes this series such a great antidote to some of the more random rockabilly compilations out there. Titles include "China Doll" by Ray Stone, "Here I Come" by Jimmy Dee & The Offbeats, "Catapiller" by Ray Campi, "Set Me Free" by Bill Morrison, "I Love Her" by The Blue Notes, "One More Time" by The Traits, "Pink Bow Tie" by Jerry Dove & His String Dusters, "Duck Tail Cat" by Dan Virva & The Flying D Ramblers, "Trapped" by Cecil Moore & The Notes, "Living Myself To Death" by Chuck Goddard, "I Want You To Love Me Tonight" by Ray Liberto, and "Truck Drivers Special" by Lonnie Lille. There's still some elements of Siffre's great approach to songwriting in place, but the production of the record is thin overall – and really gets in the way of his presentation of the material. A killer full length set from this Zambian group of the 70s – a smaller combo made up of members from some of the bigger hotel bands of the time – coming together with a lean groove that's really wonderful throughout! Core elements include the guitar of Zacks Gwaze, the keyboards of Tony Maonde, and the saxophone of Simanga Tutani – and vocals are usually sung by one or a few members of the group together, often in these lightly lilting ways that roll along with the rhythms and instrumentation, rather than stand apart from them. The Fab Trio's really been making some great musical waves in recent years – flying the flag of older improvisation high with their creative interplay, and boundless sense of imagination! That's no surprise, though, given the strength of the three players in the group – Billy Bang on violin, Joe Fonda on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums – all working together here with sounds that stem from their musical legacy back to the 70s – particularly some of the most open, expressive sounds that Bang gave us back in the day! In fact, there's almost a loft jazz feel to the whole record – a relaxed, respectful sense of creation that gives the album a very organic feel. Both Kantner and Slick handle vocals – sometimes soloing in the lead, often pairing together at a level that really gives the album a heck of a lot of power – as do the instrumental contributions from so many of their key contemporaries – both members of the Airplane, and beyond – in a lineup that includes work from Jerry Garcia, Papa John Creach, Jack Casady, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Jorma Kaukonen, and many others. Yet somehow the sound is never overwhelming – as there's almost a more personal, electrified folk approach here – nicely moody in all the best ways, almost as if Paul and Grace woke up with a hangover after the 60s, and were probing the darker sides of their psyches. Titles include "China", "Earth Mother", "Titanic", "Sunfighter", "Look At The Wood", "Silver Spoon", "Holding Together", and "Diana (parts 1 & 2)". CD

Astral Spirits, 2023. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
Really beautiful sounds from this great little group – an ensemble who definitely seem to evoke some of the organic qualities of the forest, while also moving between melodic moments and freer, almost windblown levels of sonic expression! At the core is the amazing Chad Taylor on drums – whose looseness and open ear are perfect for the proceedings – led by David Lord on a variety of guitars, and colored strongly by the work of Christine Tavolacci on flutes, David Tranchina on bass, and Nathan Hubbard on vibes, marimba, and percussion! The guitar mixes with other instruments in a really great way, unlocking marvelous colors throughout – on titles that include "Trees Yield Tomte", "All Orange Aleuria", "Nectria", "Wood Nymph", "Green Cap", and "Infant Elm". Gary NumanDance ... LP
Atco, 1981. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
A more human Gary Numan than on the heavier synth rock of his first album and the leaner robotic sound of his second – but very much recognizable as the genius behind earlier breakthroughs! There's some subtle nods to the electronic makeover of pop, soul and even jazz at the dawn of the 80s on this one – broader changes to the sound of popular music all around at the time which Gary Numan's earlier trailblazing helped clear the way for – going for some haunting subtlety in spots, more personal lyricism, and pairing things like sax, less spacey keyboards and other more timeless touches with the stark electro and distinctive vocals sound he made his name on. Dance is way overdue for reassessment. Includes "Slowcar To China", "A Subway Called You", "She's Got Claws", "Crash", "Boys Like Me", "Stories", "My Brother's Time", "You Are, You Are" and "Moral". Elektra, 1986. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Tightly grooving mid 80s fusion from Steps Ahead – their last album to feature Michael Brecker – who's killing it here on his electronic wind instrument, plus his old standby tenor sax! Fellow Steps Ahead innovator Mike Mainieri is on vibes and more, with drummer/percussionist Peter Erskine and keyboard maestro Robby Kilgore rounding things out. Magnetic's got some inventive group compositions, plus a sweetly synth-soaked reading of Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood". Overall a really tight blend of fusion funk, electro era r&b, and a few harder hitting moments! Other tracks include the George Duke-produced groover "Magnetic Love" with lead vocals by Dianne Reeves, backed by Jocelyn Brown & others – plus "Trains", "Cajun", "Sumo", "All The Tea In China" and "Something I Said". Cal TjaderSeveral Shades Of Jade/Breeze From The East ... CD
Verve, 1963. Used ... $11.99
Two of Cal's great albums for Verve that mix jazzy vibes, Latin grooves, and kitschy "Eastern" scoring! Several Shades Of Jade is a killer batch of tracks that's right in line with Cal's best work from the 60's. It's got a monster version of Horace Silver's "Tokyo Blues", plus takes of Lalo Schifrin's "The Fakir", "Borneo", "Song of the Yellow River", and "Almond Tree". Schifrin conducts and plays piano, and the group also runs through a very tight version of Quincy Jones' "Hot Sake". Breeze From the East is a bit more mellow, but still great, and with a rolling warm sound that works great with Cal's vibes. The record includes a nice early version of "Leyete", one of Cal's greatest tracks, plus "Sake & Greens", "Cha", "Shoji", "China Nights", and "Theme From Burke's Law". Very sharp packaging, and 2 bonus cuts included, for a total of 22 cuts in all! CD

Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Great tracks from the early years of the synthesizer in British music – or at least the early years of the form in mainstream styles – and not some of the colder, more academic modes of the past! Yet the music also mostly predates the big Brit electro pop explosion that would come right after some of these tracks – including work recorded by some of the artists in this collection, who are featured at a time when they were more lo-fi, homegrown, and experimental! Right at a time when the guitar was being reborn in British punk, artists like these took that inspiration and moved in another direction – in styles that are heavy on keyboards, but very different than in the generation of Fender Rhodes, moog, and Arp. The whole thing was put together by Pete Wiggs and Bob Stanley, who've given us other fantastic sets on Ace – and titles include "An Evening In The Ray" by Care, "WXJL Tonight" by Human League, "A Map Of You" by New Musik, "Jean Walks In Fresh Field" by China Crisis, "Grey Skies" by Turquoise Days, "Feather Bed" by Trevor Bastow, "Tiny Children" by Teardrop Explodes, "Unless" by Pale Fountains, "Youth" by Soft Cell, "Tidal Flow" by Illustration, "Direct Lines" by Electronic Circus, "Christiana" by Paul Haig, and "October Love Song" by Chris & Cosey. Three gals, one guy, and plenty of fuzz – the classic debut album from The Shop Assistants – one of our favorite groups from the mid 80s British scene! The quartet work in territory that's very close to the best that Creation Records had to offer at the time – a tight, jangly, 60s-inspired sense of rhythm and tunefulness – mixed with some Jesus & Mary Chain-ish fuzz on the guitars – all driven by tight, simple drumming that really sends the tunes home! Vocals are slightly sweet, in kind of a Marine Girls way – but are darkened nicely by the fuzz – and titles include "I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You", "Fixed Grin", "Somewhere In China", "All That Ever Mattered", "Home Again", "All Of The Time", and "What A Way To Die". An amazing collection of electronic music from the German scene of the 70s – easily one of the most exciting, innovative musical worlds of the past century! There was really something special going on in Germany at the time – a confluence of hippie rockers, serious proggers, urban punks, and academic electronicians – all coming together to completely destroy previous (or current) generic conceptions – and make mindblowing music that's still more revolutionary than most sounds from decades to come! This fab second collection of German electronic rock from Soul Jazz digs even deeper than the first – and features a few famous names mixes with some even more important talents from the underground – all packaged together with the rich notes and historical detail that make their compilations so great. Quite possibly the freshest vibist we've heard in years – a player whose records are always exploding with amazing sounds on his instrument – and the kind of intensity we'd reserve for a rare few on the vibes – maybe Bobby Hutcherson, Walt Dickerson, or Steve Nelson! Jason Adasiewicz has a talent that's been building and building for the past few years – and here, he really knocks it out of the park – showing a melodic conception that's as bold as his rhythmic inspiration – and control enough to get free, yet swing inside beautifully at just the right moment! The balance is one that's really been bringing some great sounds to the Chicago scene in recent years – and Jason's trio here features very like-minded cats – Mike Reed on drums and Nate McBride on bass, both players who ensure that the record is far more compelling than most other vibes trio sets you'll hope to find. A beautifully fragile record of solo piano work – one that seems to underscore it's "alone" title not just with the fact that it features just Shoji Aketagawa on piano, but also because the whole thing's recorded with this echoey, almost forlorn of quality – very unusual for a solo piano set in them modern age! Yet the record's also on the always-quirky Aketa's Disk label, and is done in the unique mode of some of their other gems – right down to allowing the grunts and vocalizations of Shoji come through alongside his work on the keys. One of the heaviest soundtracks scored by Goblin during the 70s – with lots of funky club influences, and a funky disco sound on a number of tracks that feature vocals by the great European club diva Asha Puthli. Puthli sings on the tracks "The Whip" and "The Sound Of Money", and there's one more track, "Welcome To The Boogie", that's got unidentified vocals – but which follows in a similar disco sort of mode! The rest of the material is mostly uptempo cop show type stuff from the era – with plenty of keyboards, wah wah guitars, and heavy rhythms – that funky mix of rock and soundtrack styles that Goblin did so well back in the day. Beautiful beats from Like – aka Gabriel Stevensen, hence the title of the record – music that's maybe more laidback, and more personal than the usual set of hip hop instrumentals – and which often features superb electric piano as well! In fact, the piano is so great on some tracks, that the record almost feels like a hip hop take on late nite piano records from the 50s – although other tracks mix in keyboards too, which creates this wonderful sense of variety on the album – even though things are nice and stripped down overall! Pretty darn fantastic – and we don't usually say that about a record like this – with titles that include "Black", "Sip Mo", "My Side Of The Story", "Compress", "Moor Fiya", "Dr Buzzards", "Echinacea", and "Right Hand Neighbor". RCA/Bluebird, Late 40s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Rare pre-Verve material from the great Oscar Peterson – a host of early tracks recorded for RCA in the 50s! If you think that Peterson only emerged fully-formed in the hands of Norman Granz during the 50s, then think again – because this work really shows a young player already hitting tremendous heights – full, fluid, and very commanding – at a level that's kind of a rougher around the edges version of his Verve years – but in a great way! Peterson echoes some of his predecessors a bit – and you can hear a bit more proximity to Erroll Garner or Eddie Heywood in the way he embraces the rhythms with his solos – but the overall presentation is still pure Oscar. Titles include "China Boy", "I Got Rhythm", "My Blue Heaven", "Honeydripper", "Humoresque", and "The Sheik Of Araby". Plus, this amazing CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks from the same time – more than the 8 on the original 10" release – and also material from later RCA albums that issued other singles from the time, including a few that only ever came out overseas. Transition/Delmark, 1957. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Something of a "lost" album from Sun Ra – material initially intended as his second album for Transition records in the 50s, but not issued until a decade later when Delmark Records was first putting the Chicago underground on the map! The sound here steps out nicely from the first Transition session – and Ra is already a bit bolder, not just in his structure of the songs, but in the way he handles his piano – with some darker notes and tones, more exotic phrasing, and even some very early use of electric piano – already with the haunting qualities that would show up more strongly in the Saturn years. Every member of the group is wonderful too – each with their own voice, spoken strongly and freely – in a lineup that includes Art Hoyle and Dave Young on trumpets, Julian Priester on trombone, Pat Patrick on alto and baritone sax, John Gilmore on tenor, Charles Davis on baritone, Victor Sproles on bass, William Cochran on drums, and Jim Herndon on tympani and timbali. Titles include "El Is A Sound Of Joy", "Overtones Of China", "Ankh", "Two Tones", "Saturn", "Reflections In Blue", and "Planet Earth". A mega-hit for David Bowie – and an album that reduced some of the complexity of previous efforts, yet still managed to hold onto all that was great! The world of Charlie Byrd is a pretty darn groovy one – as you'll hear on this sweet collection of 60s sides, pulled together for a double-length Columbia compilation! Byrd first started out as one of the early American guitarists to recognize the possibilities of bossa nova – mixing it with his own acoustic guitar jazz work, and coming up with a groove that was totally great – one that really blossomed during the Columbia years, thanks to some inventive arrangements and production. Some cuts here are still spare and bossa, others move Byrd into a range of fuller backings – and come up with some great bossa/mod hybrids that still stand up nicely all these many years later. A seminal moment in leftfield music – maybe the crowning achievement of Captain Beefheart, and a landmark collaboration with Frank Zappa as well! Zappa produced, and gave the group plenty of room to stretch out on this double-length set done for his Bizarre Records imprint – which allowed the Captain the kind of freedom that Frank was getting at the time – which meant there was no need for a hit, no need to tone things down, and plenty of patience for all the record's amazing instrumental twists and turns, and Beefheart's madcap sense of humor as well! The Cap sings, and plays saxes and bass clarinet – and the record's got some really incredible guitar work from Zoot Horn Rollo and Antennae Jimmy Semens – really setting the stage for countless other guitarists in years to come. There's never been anyone like Brian Eno in his early years – and despite countless copycats over the years, nobody comes close to the brilliance of a record like this! There's so much going on here – darkness and wit, guitars and quiet, fantasy and sentimentality – all amazingly blended into tunes that shouldn't be catchy, but are – and which come across much more with the oddly rocking vibe of Eno's years in Roxy Music, than any of his later, better-known ambient projects. Make no mistake, that sense of sound that would grace the ambient works is definitely brewing here – as there's very interesting production, unusual sonic elements, and other surprises taking place throughout – in ways that continue to mesmerize and delight as the years go on. Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest New York groups of the early 80s – and a key link in the post-disco, post-punk, and no wave scenes of the time! Konk had an incredible sound that featured a stripped down blend of bass, live percussion, and horns – all grooving together in a style that sat somewhere between Kid Creole and ACR – but without the kitsch of the former, or the darkness of the latter! The bass dominated on most tracks – rolling out amidst the drums and congas, and setting a pace that was picked up strongly by the group's tight work on horns. Most tracks are acoustic, save for the bass – and the vocals are kept at a minimum to allow for the strongest focus on the tunes rhythmic progressions! As usual, Soul Jazz have done a tremendous job of recounting the group's history in a wealth of notes, interviews, and photos – and this well-done package is the first ever proper reissue of the group's work! The presentation of the material here includes bits of announcer patter – mostly from Symphony Sid, who's really one of those guys that you've gotta hear to believe – a surprisingly wonderful combination with Bird's famous alto sax – presented here in a milieu that really lets you hear the raw power of both Parker's music and the way in which he was put forward to audiences at the time! This second volume features work by Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Al Haig on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Max Roach on drums – and there's a slightly larger group on a few numbers too. Titles include "White Christmas", "Little Willie Leaps", "Half Nelson", "Ornithology", "Cheryl", and "On A Slow Boat To China". CD

A heavy groover from Tito Puente – recorded in a back to basics style, but with a hard percussive edge! The sound here has plenty of jazzy touches – almost in the mode of Tito's funky big band records of the mid 70s, but with less of the funk or the large group touches – almost a 70s jazzy update of his best work from earlier years! The set is proof that Puente could keep his fire burning brightly even through many years of changes in Latin music – and the set features titles that include "Batuka", "China", "Palladium Days", "Nina Y Senora", "Para Los Rumberos", and "El Catire". Savoy, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
The one and only album that Sun Ra ever cut for the Savoy label – a beautifully understated session that mixes more conventional jazz with some particularly Ra-like touches! The group on the set is extremely tight – especially the horn work of John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and Pat Patrick – who glide together along with some of the best mainstream modernists of the 50s, but break out with earthier tones and phrases that clearly mark their playing as different from the norm. Ra plays relatively straight piano for the album, but there's more than enough Arkestra touches from other players on bells and assorted percussion – emphasizing the rhythmic qualities of the tunes, and really living up to the promise of titles that include "Bassism", "China Gates", "Of Sounds And Something Else", "Tapestry From An Asteroid", "Jet Flight", "Space Jazz Reverie", and "Where Is Tomorrow?". Next up is the first album on Saturn! Despite the futurism that the title of the set might imply, the material on this LP is actually some of Sun Ra's earliest, and dates back to the years when the Arkestra was first beginning to make itself heard in Chicago. That doesn't stop the material from being amazing, though, as these prime early tracks really show how strong Ra's vision was, even when it was being applied to material that might look more simple on the surface. Titles include "El Is A Sound Of Joy", "Medicine For A Nightmare", "Sunology", "Advice To Medics", and "Portrait Of The Living Sky". CD

✨✧ Sun RaSound of Joy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Transition/Delmark, 1957. Used ...
CD features 2 bonus tracks – "As You Once Were" and "Dreams Come True" – with vocals by Clyde Williams. CD

✨✧ Archie SheppFor Losers ... LP
Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest albums from Archie Shepp's post-new thing years for Impulse – a nicely grooving session that mixes soul-based tracks with more righteous spiritual jazz moments! The approach here is a nicely varied – a laidback, collaborative spirit that's even quite different from Shepp's work in France at the time, or even from some of his other sessions for Impulse. At one moment, Archie's playing in a gently spare and soulful mode – foreshadowing his late 70s sides – but at another, he'll be opening up with intensity, egged on by a group of well-matched players who include Woody Shaw, Grachan Moncur III, James Spaulding, and Cedar Walton. Side 2 features the extended "Un Croque Monsieur" – a modally building number with some free post-Coltrane energy, and a righteous poem from Chinalin Sharpe. Sharpe returns in a completely different spirit on "I Got It Bad" – singing the lyrics in a Billie Holiday mode alongside Shepp's solo – and Leon Thomas sings on the soul-based number "Stick Em Up", again very different than usual! Titles also include a great version of Cal Massey's "What Would It Be Without You" and the funky groover "Abstract". LP, Vinyl record album

After influencing countless groups of the 70s with their righteous funky soul of the late 60s, the Temps end up sounding kind of silly trying to hit a funk groove like the rest of the other 70s bands. This is the case on side one, where the group's getting some keyboards and funky horn arrangements from Truman Thomas – on tracks that include "Up The Creek (Without A Paddle)", "China Doll", and "Sweet Gypsy Jane". Side two is completely different, and has them doing some sort of "china and lace" fragile soul work, set to arrangements by Donald Baldwin that are more appropriate for adult contemporary radio than Motown soul. A well-selected set of tracks by the legendary vocalist Leon Thomas – one that focuses squarely on his recordings for the Flying Dutchman label – with standouts from his own records, a crucial collaboration with Johnny Hodges, and a previously unreleased tune as well! The collection features a really wonderful range of music – some tunes with the righteous feel of Thomas' singing with Pharoah Sanders, some others with a tighter soul feel, and even a few more with a classic jazz approach that's mighty nice! The albums under Thomas' name often feature some great small group backings – with players who include Billy Harper on tenor, and Roy Haynes or Bernard Purdie on drums – and some of the larger backings feature excellent arrangements from Oliver Nelson and Pee Wee Ellis. Titles include "Shape Your Mind To Die", "Just In Time To See The Sun", "It's My Life I'm Fighting For", "The Creator Has A Master Plan", "Let The Rain Fall On Me", "China Doll", "Bags' Groove", "One", "Come Along", "Let's Go Down To Lucy's", "Love Each Other", "Balance Of Life (Peace Of Mind)", "Umbo Weti", "Welcome To New York", and a previously unreleased version of "Um Um Um". On I've Never Been To Me, Nancy Wilson hits hard on two different levels – some of the mellow, sophisticated numbers that made her mid 70s years so great – and a few more upbeat groovers that aim strongly for the clubs! The blend is carried off well here – thanks to production and arrangements from Gene Page and Garry Sherman – both of whom avoid any too-commercial modes and really help keep the album at a level that works perfect for Wilson's huge legacy in soul music! Early work by one of the greatest voices on the alto sax in the 1950s – a player who worked with the deftness of other altoists of his generation, but a depth of soul usually reserved for the tenor! The setting is simple and perfect – as Phil Woods blows at the helm of a quartet that features John Williams on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – players who know how to get things moving, but allow plenty of room for the leader to fill space with his solos! Even at this early date, Woods' command of his instrument is amazing – and the record is easily one of the greatest introductions to his work you'll ever find. Sublime 60s soul singles – upbeat, grooving, and brought together in support of legendary UK club The Catacombs – an early hotbed for the Northern Soul scene! Jerry Goldsmith's score for one of the greatest movies of the 70s – done with this spacious mix of jazzy elements that's completely sublime – and a bit like some of Johnny Mandel's best scoring too! The film is set in the 30s, but Goldsmith uses a lot of mature 70s elements in his music – nothing electric or funky, but just these open orchestrations that are really wonderful, and especially moody – sometimes laced with a jazzy trumpet solo, or a bit of piano – almost with that old Hollywood-through-crumbling LA of the 70s motif that you'd find in the music to Long Goodbye. A collection of tracks that amount to some of incredibly deep audio archaeology – a wonderful, consciousness wakening collection of globe spanning 78s from the first half of the 20th Century – all from the darkest corners of the EMI Vaults! Honest Jons does an impressive job of collecting recordings that are first and foremost exciting pieces of music – and they reportedly spent a couple of years going through thousands and thousands of 78s and to put this thing together. It was worth the effort! Freaked out, slow burning, LSD inspired freeform psychedelia from the early 70s – credited to Czech-born guru Sergius Golowin and the Cosmic Jokers! Conceptually, Lord Krishna Von Goloka concerns itself with the spiritual machinations of the universe and all kinds of mystical mumbo jumbo of which we can't claim to speak for the merits, mostly due to a language barrier, but the leisurely cosmic soundspaces speak to us well enough! Acoustic guitars, spacey keys, organ and echoey sounds bring a lighter feel to much of it, as opposed to the heavier proggy touches of contemporary efforts of the time. 3 long pieces, the uber epic length "Der Reigen" and "Di Hock-Zeit" which each run near 20 minutes, and the shorter middle part "Die Weibe Alm".
