O'Donel LevyTime Has Changed ... CD
LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99
A great later set from 70s guitar genius O'Donel Levy – slightly different than his earlier work for the Groove Merchant label, but equally great in its own sort of way! Levy's still working here with producer Sonny Lester on the LC label – and the tone is great, with this clear, clean, soulful line that should have made O'Donel one of the giants of his generation – tripping along with these well-crafted solos that are a perfect fit for the laidback rhythms of the tunes! And if you're worried that the later date and different cover style is too much of a shift for Levy, don't – because there's plenty of greatness within – and the record really knocks it out of the park compared to some of his more mainstream contemporaries. Titles include the great "Butta" – plus "Love Will Never Die", "Have You Heard", "Dancing Girl", and "Time Has Changed". CD

Jimmy PonderAll Things Beautiful ... CD
LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
Sweet soulful lines from guitarist Jimmy Ponder – working here in a warm set of bigger backings that almost give the record the same feel as classic late 60s outings from Wes Montgomery, or some of the CTI work by George Benson! Backings are put together by Brad Baker – in that same great mix of jazz and soul he used with his B Baker Chocolate Company material – and although there's a bit of chorus vocals on the album (sung by a group that includes Gwen Guthrie and Jocelyn Brown), the main focus is on the soulful, chromatic lines of Ponder's guitar – which have a poise and focus here that really tops some of his earlier work. The groove is pretty super-dope throughout – that great late Groove Merchant approach to funky jazz – and titles include "Love Me Right", "Chasing That Face", "A Trip To The Stars", "A Clue", and "Turn". De-Lite/Solid (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
A great collection of funky 45s from the De-Lite family of labels – most of which were never issued on any sort of full-length album! In addition to singles issued by De-Lite – best known as the key home of Kool & The Gang – the set also features tracks from the related Vigor and Red Coach labels – two excellent east coast imprints that were filled with funky combos who were just bursting with talent – very much tuned to the fast-funk styles that exploded in the years before disco! Titles include "Chick A Boom" by Pazant Brothers, "How Do You Feel" by The New Cymbals, "RRAWJ" by Reggie Sadler Revue, "Stand Up (part 2)" by Maskman & The Agents, "Funky Generation" by Everyday People, "Spread The Word" by Yvonne Daniels, "Hard To Handle" by Dennis Robinson, "I Smell Trouble" by Johnny De'Vigne, "Lady" by Shalong, "Far Out" by Crown Heights Affair, "Jackie" by Mebeus, "Party Music" by Pat Lundi, "Be Real" by Tomorrow's Edition, "I Wanna Give You Tomorrow" by Benny Troy, "It Really Hurts Me Girl" by The Carstairs, "LC Funk" by The New Cymbals, "Mboga Chakula" by Pazant Brothers, and "My Baby's Coming Home To Stay" by Janice Saddler. ✨✧ Leonard Simpson Duo (Guilty Simpson & Leonard Charles)LSD ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant stuff from the The Leonard Simpson Duo – with a moniker like a stripped down jazz combo but it's neo-classic, gritty Detroit hip hop all the way – thanks to bedrock rhymes by Guilty Simpson and perfectly suited production by Leonard Charles. As you probably gathered, the album title is a reference to the principal players as opposed to hallucinogens, this one is just tripped out enough – Guilty in laidback though rock solid for and New Zealand producer LC bring in headnodding beats, woozy organ, tight piano and more. Includes "My Inspiration", "Breaking Bread", "She's Got It", "GUILTY", "Friends", "Grass", "Nobody", "Heavy Organ" feat Wildchild, "Bricks", "Message To My Ex", "The GOAT" and "Smokin' Good". Rudiger Carl IncKing Alcohol (New Version) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
FMP/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1972. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $11.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever on record from Rudiger Carl – and not just because the album is "dedicated to all drinker friends"! Despite that embrace of alcohol, the record's got a very sobering power – as the group is a free jazz trio, working in the best bracing early FMP way – with Carl on tenor, Gunter Christmann on trombone, and Detlef Shoenenberg on drums – all turning their instruments inside out as they madly, freely, explosively work off the power of one another! Christmann is especially amazing – and this album might well be to his trombone what the late 60s FMP sides were to Brotzmann's tenor – although Detlef's drums are pretty amazing too – very different than any contemporaries or precursors, and worth the price of admission alone. Titles include "Thrombose", "King Alcohol", "AEIOU", and "Rush Hour/Something/Triotrip". Plus, this 2CD reissue adds in an astounding 70 more minutes of unreleased recordings from the same sessions! Matt DennisWelcome Matt Dennis ... LP
Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. Titles include "Home", "Welcome Mat", "Back In Your Own Back Yard", "By The Fireside", "A Cup Of Coffe A Sandwich & You", "Let's Put Out The Lights", and "Your Family". LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah Webster FabioJujus – Alchemy Of The Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
An incredible album, and very unique! Sarah Webster Fabio was a hip 70s poet with a very righteous sound – and she's working here with funky backings by a tight group that includes family members, in a style that's similar to early 70s work by artists like Wanda Robinson and Camille Yarborough – both of whom also mixed together funk and poetry! The album's got a massive funky cut called "Sweet Songs" – the kind of groover we never tire of, with tight drums, great guitar, and wonderful vocals by Sarah herself. There's lots of other great tunes too – with titles that include "Juju For Grandma", "Still A Red Hot Axe", "Chromo", "If We Come As Soft Rain", and "Jujus/Alchemy Of The Blues". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Mike Falcao E Seu Conjunto (aka Walter Wanderley)No Embalo Do Samba ... LP
Imperial (Brazil), 1966. Very Good- ... $24.99
Wonderful bossa and samba grooves – with a hip edge that reminds us a lot of Ed Lincoln's best records from the time – no surprise, since Falcao is actually Brazilian organist Walter Wanderley, working under another name! Wanderley, as Falcao, plays Hammond organ with a sparkly finish – grooving lightly over tight samba rhtyhms, with some jangly piano thrown into counterbalance his work on the keys. The set grooves like a non-stop 60s party – with some occasional vocals, lots of weird-sounding percussion, and a real focus on tight snappy songs with a beat. Titles include "The Blues Walk", "Tamanco No Samba", "Giramundo", "Upa Neguinho", "Liberdade Demais", and "Sao Salvador". LP, Vinyl record album

Gogi GrantWelcome To My Heart ... LP
RCA, 1957. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Gogi Grant sang a fair bit of dramatic pop material in the 50s, but she's nicely laidback and mellow here – working with lush backings from Dennis Farnon, in a moody set of love songs and ballads! The music is filled with plenty of dark corners and indigo hues – and Gogi's vocals have traded some of their previous drama for a sad-tinged approach that really fits Farnons arrangements nicely. Titles include "At Last At Last", "Love Letters", "With All My Heart", "But Beautiful", "So Do I", "They Didn't Believe Me", and "Welcome To My Heart". LP, Vinyl record album

Karl Hector & The MalcounsNon Ex Orbis ... CD
Now Again, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Some of the fullest, freakiest sounds we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – and a set that almost has the contemporary combo resonating with some of the older psych and fuzz that often gets reissued on the Now Again label! JJ Whitefield – of Whitefield Brothers/Poets Of Rhythm fame – is at the helm of the group, and also handles the production – and the whole thing is a deep shift from the sharper, funkier style of his early material – as this record's really awash in fuzz and long, languorous space – drawing elements from older funk, jazz, and global elements, and pushing them all through a mighty cool psych-styled filter. Marja Burchard sings some cool wordless vocals on the record, but most of the focus here is instrumental – with great organ, vibes, moog, and plenty of fuzzy guitar. Titles include "Crawling Through Your Mind", "Hymnins (extended)", "Inhale/Exhale", "Mother Seletta", "Dekagon", and "Asteroid". CD

Karl Hector & The MalcounsSahara Swing ... CD
Now Again, 2008. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
One of the hippest albums from the funky empire that includes Poets Of Rhythm and The Whitefield Brothers – a set of Afro-exotic grooves that really blows our minds – and which opens the group up into whole new territory! There's echoes of Mulatu, Salah Ragab, and other older exotic funk artists in the mix – but as usual for the Poets, the whole thing's put together with a sharp edge of its own – a keen ear for catching the best elements of the original music, and distilling them down to a super-powerful essence – then re-presenting and oddly-producing them with some very unique sounds! Karl Hector joins the group on vocals and percussion – and other instrumentation includes ballaphon, metallophon, horns, and keyboards – all used in really enigmatic ways, and with other-worldly sounds that are simply amazing! Titles include "Followed Path", "When The Sun Breaks Through", "Sahara Swing", "Jabore (part 3)", "Debere", "Transition", "Mystical Brotherhood", "Toure Samar", and "Passau Run". CD

Karl Hector & The MalcounsUnstraight Ahead ... CD
Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 17.98
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". ✨✧ Walter JacksonWelcome Home – The Many Moods of Walter Jackson ... LP
Okeh, 1965. Very Good- ... $2.99
A sublime mix of new tunes and re-imagined standards – and a set that takes Walter Jackson into even more sophisticated soul territory than before! The record is proof that the up and coming soul artists of the 60s had a key place alongside the more established mainstream acts on the other side of the fence – as Walter's working here with arranger Riley Hampton to re-cast a number of familiar tunes in his cool Iceman soul mode – changing the themes, rhythms, and inflections of the tracks for a more contemporary soul market – and also interspersing them with a few great new songs of his own! The approach is amazing – far better than even Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson's work in a similar idiom – and the album features the sublime hit "Welcome Home", plus the Van McCoy tunes "Suddenly I'm All Alone", "Still At The Mercy Of Your Love", and "The Magic's Gone" – alongside versions of "Moon River", "Let It Be Me", "Imagination", and "My Funny Valentine". Cotillion/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $22.99
A fantastic collection of grooves from Mass Production – one of the best of the large funk ensembles to hit the mainstream at the end of the 70s – even though they didn't always get the success they deserved! That doesn't stop these guys from giving their all, though – super-sharp, super-tight instrumentation that comes down on the groove right from the get-go – and which moves with a fast funk energy that's a nice contrast to some of the stiffer, clunkier modes that were floating around at the time! These guys inherit the best impulses of Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang – and find a way to make their large lineup sound nice and lean, never too overcooked – with shifting vocals that really help keep things interesting throughout. The 3CD package features 45 tracks from their seven year stretch recording for Atlantic/Cotillion Records – and titles include "Sky High", "Groove Me", "Our Thought", "Bopp", "Turn Up The Music", "Diamond Chips", "Inner City", "Sun Dancer", "Victory 83", "Magic", "I Like To Dance", "Welcome To Our World", "Slow Bump", "Time Bomb", "Keep My Heart Together", "Cosmic Lust", "I Believe In Music", "Fun In The Sun", "Just Wanna Make A Dream Come True", "Firecracker", and "Eknuf (inst)". Laidback, soulful work from Pharoah Sanders – a record that showcases a very different side of his talents than you might know from his classic albums on Impulse Records – but a side that's an equally great revelation overall! The album features mostly older jazz standards, blown by Pharoah in a mellow, late nite sort of mode – working with help from William Henderson on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Ecclesion Wainwright on drums. The format is surprisingly captivating, largely because Pharoah's tone is always such a treat – and he sparkles with a majesty on the set that captures our ear a lot more than we expected! The whole thing's almost got the feel of some of Coltrane's earlier ballad work – and titles include "The Nearness Of You", "Nancy", "I Want To Talk About You", "Say It Over And Over Again", "Polkadots & Moonbeams", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". Haggis (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
The debut solo album from trumpeter Malcolm Strachan – a musician who's normally part of the larger Haggis Horns ensemble, but who sounds even more tremendous out here in the spotlight on his own – a player with a lot stronger jazz chops than we might have expected, really soaring here on an album of upbeat groovers and modal tunes! There's a vibe to the record that reminds us of the first time we heard work on the Ricky Tick label, or maybe like some of Nicola Conte's best – but the approach is more small combo overall, as Malcolm blows trumpet and flugelhorn next to a core trio of piano, bass, and drums – with other horn players stepping in and out of the mix from track to track! Tunes are all original, and have a vibe that's as classic as the cover might make you think – and titles include "Take Me To The Clouds", "Just The Thought Of You", "Uncle Bobby's Last Orders", "Time For A Change", "Aline", and "Mitchell's Landing". Armando TrovajoliLe Dolci Signore ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... $18.99
A beautiful little soundtrack from Armando Trovajoli – the best sort that he did in the 60s, at a time when he and a few other Italian soundtrack artists were helping push things forward from straighter jazz into the sorts of groovy modes that would make their scene stand out from the rest! The tunes are often spare and slinky, with a good amount of space between the notes – but in a way that's different than Morricone, maybe warmer and sweeter, with a great approach that lets you focus on a tinkling piano part, an unusual bassline, an organ riff, or all the other great elements that go into the tunes! The set begins with the swinging "Anyone Can Play" – a nice little vocal number – then runs into a whole host of great instrumentals. CD

Lenny Welch/OC SmithCadences – The Early Recordings 1957 to 1962 ... CD
Cadence/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
Early work from two different singers – each featured here on rare singles for the Cadence Records label! First up is Lenny Welch – a singer with a voice that's as smooth as butter, and a key link between some of the more pop-oriented vocalists of the 50s, and the new generation of 60s "icemen" like Jerry Butler and Chuck Jackson! Like those two, Lenny's got a great way of putting over a sad tune with just the right balance of emotion – never too overdone, nor self-indulgent – but perfectly poised with a nicely mature quality. And Lenny's also a great singer on a more upbeat number – a surprisingly rocking vocalist when he wants to be, as you'll hear on some of the more groove-oriented titles on this set – tunes that have a classy early soul approach, one that's almost a bit like uptown soul of a few years later. CD features 19 Welch titles – including "Rocket To The Moon", "I'd Like To Know", "Darlin", "You Don't Know Me", "Pony Time", "You Can Have Her", "Mama Don't You Hit That Boy", "Taste Of Honey", "Congratulations Baby", and "The Last Star Of Evening". The bigger surprise here is OC Smith – recording her as Ocie Smith – years before his big country soul hits at the end of the 60s, and in a style that's as cool and classy as Lenny Welch, but maybe a bit more rocking too – with nice use of electric bass at the core of larger arrangements, and a nice sense of rhythm that often brings in a bit of jukebox mambo or popcorn soul. CD features 6 titles by Ocie Smith – including "Lighthouse", "Bad Man Of Missouri", "Forbidden Fruit", "If You Don't Love Me", "Too Many", and "Slow Walk". CD

WilcoBeing There ... CD
Nonesuch, 1996. Used 2 CDs ... $3.99
A modern country rock masterpiece. Wilco's second album, an unlikely (for its time) major label double album does an incredible job of showing stylistic breadth and sprawl behind lyrical and emotional consistency, arrangements-wise recalling the best of the band's more adventurously rootsy forbears enough to not unfairly call it "alt-country" at the time, but it's ultimately timeless. Here we are decades later and it doesn't sound like it's aged a day. Includes "Misunderstood", "Far, Far Away", "Red-Eyed And Blue", "Forget the Flowers", "Outta Mind (Outta Sight)", "Kingpin", "Whole Would You Wanna Live", "Dreamer In My Dreams" and more. CD

Nancy WilsonFor Once In My Life (aka Welcome To My Love) ... LP
Capitol, 1967. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Nancy Wilson gets some great help here from Oliver Nelson – whose solid arrangements make the record one of our favorites from Wilson's early Capitol years! There's a feel here that's a bit earthier and bluesier than some of Wilson's other albums – a mode that's a nice extension of the post-R&B sound that Ray Charles was forging, but done with more of the class and sophistication you'd expect from Nancy. Nelson still uses a fair bit of strings in the mix, and although the pace is often gentle, there's an undercurrent to the record that keeps things soulful and strong! The set features a great reading of "I'm Always Drunk In San Francisco", plus versions of "Why Try To Change Me Now", "You Don't Know Me", "Ode To Billie Joe", and "May I Come In?". Joyce Elaine Yuille with Timo LassyWelcome To My World ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2015. New Copy ... $16.99
A hell of a singer, working here with some wonderful grooves from Timo Lassy – an artist we've really loved for his own jazzy projects in the past! Joyce Elaine Yuille has this style that's very classic, and very groovy – jazz-based, with a nice rasp in her voice that really brings out some of the more soulful qualities in the music – and able to write her own lyrics, too – which makes for a wonderful record that's full of fresh sounds at every turn! Lassy's music is wonderful too – tightly snapping on the rhythms, but never forced – and with a jazz current that's a nice change from other contemporary soul production, which might have been added to the record with a bigger label. But clearly, the real star of the show is Joyce – a talent that will definitely be huge in years to come – a rock-solid singer and songwriter who may well turn out to be the female equivalent of Gregory Porter. Titles include "Come With Me", "Tryin Times", "Chaos", "It's Madness", "Make Right", "Welcome To My World", "Follow The Sun", and "Late I Rise". CD

BBE (UK), 2010s. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
A fantastic trip through the archive with Volcov – even if most of the cuts here are a bit more recent than those that usually get archival status! And yet in a way, many of these cuts almost went to the archives directly – especially in this digital age for modern soul and club, where so many great singles and albums don't make it onto vinyl – and fade fast in the fast rush of new music hitting the internet. That's why we love collections like this so much – as Volcov's done a great job of grabbing the best bits from the past decade or so, and weaving them together as a strong reminder of how much wonderful soul music is being created on this planet – most of it still waiting to be discovered. There's a few older bits here, but most tracks are contemporary – and titles include "Caterpillar" by Rebirth, "All That Glitters" by Carleen Anderson, "Let The Music Play" by Collective Peace, "Spiraling Prism" by Ian O'Brien, "Ori Space" by Ron Trent, "Turn It Around (Eric Lau rmx)" by Ruth Koleva, "Planet Birth (Xantone Blacq rmx/Volcov edit)" by Intuit with Andy Bey, "Lawra (Volcov edit)" by Tony Williams, "Blue Room (Kaidi Tatham's shokazulu rmx)" by Quentin Kane & Simon Sheldon with TK Blue, "Finding The Peace" by Skymark, "I Put A Spell On You" by Honey Sweet with Cindy Mizelle, and "After Life (part 2)" by Harry Whitaker. Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Titles include "Invitation To A Dream", "The Eyes Of Memory", "Rise & Rise", "Every Season Has Its Reason", and "I Am Because You Are". CD

One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and tenor, trumpet, and flute of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – on titles that include "Majestic Travel Agency", "Scintillate", and "Ear-Regularities". ECM (Germany), 1978/1980/1982. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Three groundbreaking albums from this ethereal ECM ensemble – a very hip trio that features Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos, and Collin Wolcott – all coming together in a beautiful blend of jazz, world music, and a touch of ECM atmospherics! The instrumentation is quite compelling with Cherry on trumpet, flutes, organ, and doussn'gouni; Vasconcelos on berimbau, cuica, talking drum, and percussion; and Wolcott on sitar, tabla, dulcimer, and percussion – all instruments that are used sparely, often away from their original cultural context, in ways that unlock new sounds and new meanings in the hands of the trio! The record is quite open and airy at points – really resonating in that sweet ECM style of production, which almost seems to build a new sense of majesty out of the simplest acoustic elements. 3CD set features each individual album, plus new notes – and titles include "Like That Of Sky", "Codona", "Mumakata", "Drip Dry", "Walking On Eggs", "Goshakabuchi", "Clicky Clacky", "Trayra Boia", "Lullaby", "Travel By Night", and "Inner Organs". MPS/Rearward (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A large group in a small club – the legendary Clarke Boland Big Band, playing at the home turf of one of their key members – tenorist Ronnie Scott! The set features a very legendary performance by the ensemble – a crack lineup that's easily one of the best ever sported by the CBBB – perfectly mixing American rhythms, and a trans-Atlantic lineup of soloists – all tied together with just the sort of rich arrangements that make the group so great! Things groove right from the get-go – thanks to a rhythm lineup that features Kenny Clarke on drums, and Francy Boland on piano – plus bassist Ron Matthewson, sitting in for the usual Jimmy Woode. The horn players really send things off, though – tight trumpets from Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman, and Dusko Goykovich; bold trombones from Ake Persson and Nat Peck; and some searing reed lines from Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Derek Humble on alto, Sahib Shihab on baritone, and Tony Coe on both tenor and clarinet. This CD features both the first and second sets at Scotts by the group – albums titled Volcano and Rue Chaptal – with titles that include "Volcano", "Griff's Groove", "Now Hear My Meanin", "Box 703 Washington DC", "Thence We Issued Out Again to See the Stars", "Rue Chaptal", "I Don't Want Nothin From Nobody & I Ain't Giving Nothin Away", "Sax No End", "Minor Blues", and "The Girl & The Turk". No doubt about it – these guys are groovy! Groovy like Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 – with a sweet male/female harmony vocal style, applied here to a mixture of bossa nova tunes and 60s pop numbers, recorded in Mexico by this Swedish combo, with a sound that would make A&M weep! There's a great selection of tunes on the package that keep things nice and fresh – fresher than Sergio Mendes, even – as the tracks run from a cover of "California Soul", to obvious numbers like "Wave" and "Mas Que Nada", to lesser-known gems like "Good Old Brandy On The Rocks", "Coco Loco Samba", "Honeymoon In Las Brisas", and "Acapulco Sunset". Some of the most enigmatic work we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – still every bit as funky as before, but with a deeper, more organic approach overall – one that includes loads of sweet acoustic instrumentation and mighty nice percussion! There's a very vintage feel to the record – a vibe that almost makes us feel like we've dug up tracks from the back of some studio in Lagos, just waiting to find the light of day – done in a style that's got plenty of East African styles in the mix, yet a core funk-based approach that still shows the group's Whitefield Brothers heritage. Not Two (Poland), 2019. New Copy 7CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title definitely gets it right – as the set's documents unexpected alchemy between reedman Ken Vandermark and a wonderful blend of improvisers – all recorded over the space of a few days in the Polish city of Krakow! The set's something of a follow-up to Vandermark's massive Alchemia box from 2005 – which also documented a long residency in that city – but the format here is a bit different, and also demonstrates just how much Ken and the other musicians have grown over the years! Each CD features a different concert performance, or performances – with different groupings of musicians, some that don't even include Vandermark. Lineups include Ken Vandermark dueting with Nate Wooley, Steve Noble playing solo, the duo of Ikue Mori and Mette Rasmussen, the duo of John Butcher and Nate Wooley, a solo performance by Joe McPhee, the duo of John Butcher and Ken Vandermark, a quartet with Nate Wooly and Kent Kessler, a duet between Kessler and McPhee, another duet between John Butcher and John Tilbury, and a trio with Hamid Drake, Eddie Prevost, and Vandermark. CD7 is something of a bonus – material recorded the following year in Munich – with a trio of Vandermark, Prevost, and Tilbury. CD

Heavy funk from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – a selection of previously unreleased tracks that's a treasure trove of hard-hitting groovers! The work on the set is by 3 different artists – Paul T Smith, Electric Church, and Plight – certainly not the more famous names of the scene at the time, but working with bigger talents that include Freddie Hughes, Ray Obiedo, Lonnie Hewitt, Sheila E, and Anthony Davis. The tracks are a heck of a lot rougher than anything we've heard coming out of Oakland, Berkley, or San Francisco at the time – and many numbers have heavy groove that shows the Bay Area as a potential goldmine for fans of the funky 45 sound! Tracks include "We Had A Love", "We've Got To Find A Way", "Down The Line", and "I Can't Dance" by Electric Church; "Newsroom", "Country Flower", "A Good Dream", "Ready To Live Raw Funk", and "Before You Know" by Paul T Smith; and "Soul Duck" by Plight. Fantastic sounds for fans of funk and rock alike – music from the freaky, fuzzy 70s scene in Zambia – a place where styles effortlessly criss-crossed to really produce something new and unique! The work here is often heavy on fuzz guitars, but also has some wickedly soulful basslines and drums – so that although the tunes can be psych-styled, they're also pretty darn funky too – often at a level that's a bit like the Nigerian Afro Funk of the time, but much grittier and more righteous! The quality of the music and scene is explored in depth in the package – which includes a very detailed booklet of notes and photos – all to support the selection of music, which may well be the hippest so far from the Now Again label – and that's really saying a lot, if you know their other titles! Tracks include "Funky Lady" by Teddy Chisi, "Fast" by Salty Dog, "Rain & Sunshine" by Crossbones, "I Don't Know" by Born Free, "Fwe Bena Zambia" by Five Revolutions, "Who's That Guy" by Ricky Banda, "Changa Namwele" by Machine Gunners, "Poverty" by Cosmos Zani, "Dzikolino Ni Zambia" by Keith Mlevhu, "Running" by Blackfoot, and "Everyday Has Got A New Dream" by Dr Footswitch. Beat (Italy), 1980/1981. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Three Italian horror classics – packaged here in a single set! First up is Fabio Frizzi's score for Nella Citta Dei Morti Viventi/City Of The Living Dead – exactly the kind of set that shows why he was one of the true masters of Italian horror! The sounds here are a mix of electric and acoustic elements – but the latter are often played in offbeat ways that they really sound electric – making for a moody mix of music that goes way beyond the usual spare slasher keyboards! A few numbers use wordless vocals, while others have nicely stepping strings – and a beefier bassline comes into play on a few standout funk tracks as well. Titles include "Toward Dawn", "Fatti Misteriosi", "Apoteosi Del Mistero", "Occhi Di Brace", and "Verso L'Alba". Next is Frizzi's Beyond/E Tu Vivrai Nel Terrore L'Aldila – a very spooky soundtrack – and one that stands out as one of the best-remembered from this important second generation of Italian horror! The record's got less of the atonal orchestrations and funk/thriller modes of a few years before – and moves into the spare, eerie quality that John Carpenter helped usher in – with lots of crashing piano lines, atonal guitar parts, and weird descending chords that feel like they're going to suck you into the deep! There's some very nice and sparing use of synthesizer within the score – just the right bit to add a creepy edge, but maybe not as much as on other synth-heavy soundtracks from the time – and titles include "Voci Dal Nulla", "Oltre La Soglia", "Suono Aperto", "Verso L'Ignoto", and "Giro Di Blues". Walter Rizzati's score for Quella Villa Accanto Al Cimitero/House By The Cemetery has lots of keyboards – in a spare, spooky soundtrack from the early 80s Italian horror scene – a blood-dripping masterpiece from director Lucio Fulcio! Walter Rizzati's music here is heavy on the kinds of electric touches you'd hear from both Goblin or John Carpenter – and often paced at a level that's somewhere between the pair – not as jamming as Goblin, but a bit fuzzier than Carpenter – a blend that makes for some really wonderful numbers that are plenty creepy here on their own – even away from the images on the screen! There's plenty of great bits that creep up on you slowly – and others that jump mercilessly from dark corners – on titles that include "Quella Villa", "I Remember", "Incontro", "Blonk Monster", "Verso Il Terrore", "Voci Dal Terrore", "Tema Bambino", and "Chi Sta Arrivando". ✨✧ Karl Hector & The MalcounsCan't Stand The Pressure ... CD
Now Again, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever CD issue of a range of material from this ultra-hip group – all tracks that originally appeared on vinyl-only releases, now making their CD debut in an overstuffed collection that features 24 tracks in all! The vibe here is great – that Karl Hector & The Malcouns mix of deep funk instrumentation and various global elements – almost an imagined version of 70s sounds from Africa and the Mid East, but served up with the sensibilities of a deep funk combo – which is what they are, given that the group is just the Whitefield Brothers and Poets Of Rhythm, working here under another one of their many names! Yet the instrumentation is quite different than those other acts, too – much more rootsy and filled with a lot of organic percussion and other global elements – as you'll hear on titles that include "Shangold", "Leealah", "Roads Of Otumpa", "Tamanrasset", "JB Rip", "Irtijal", "The Cave", "Orange", "Transition X", "Medium Rare (part 1)", "Beyond Squares", and "Coomassi". Now Again, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

BBE (UK), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first of BBE's forays into current hip hop – and a wonderful debut in the series! The album started as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with real instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. Features great remakes of "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd), plus the cuts "Rico Suave Bossa Nova", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It". BBE (UK), 2001/2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The deeply in-demand beats for Jay Dee's now classic 2001 effort – The first of BBE's forays into new school hip hop – finally available! We don't need to tell you that Welcome 2 Detroit turned out to be and a wonderful debut for the initial BBE hip hop series. It really started out as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with live instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. This one returns the project to more of that pre-planned breakbeat feel. A stellar set, with lyrics, or without – one that laid the groundwork for Dilla's subsequent production aesthetic! Features great remakes of "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd), plus the cuts "Y'all Ain't Ready", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It", "Think Twice" and more! Super Sonic Jazz (Netherlands), 2020. New Copy 3LPs ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant collaboration between longtime London beatmaker IG Culture and some of the younger talents on the scene – including some of the jazz musicians who have really helped shape the sound of the city in recent years! The style is a great mix of jazz instrumentation and some of the more crackling electric modes you'll know from IG Culture's classic work – a whole new breath of life into a style that was already pretty lively to begin with – with work from Wayne Francis on saxes, Nathaniel Cross on trombone, Luke Wynter on bass, Fred Humain Salle and Dwayne Kilvington on keyboards, and Alex Phountzi on guitar – plus some occasional vocals from Demelza Toy Toy, Natalie May, and Oliver Night. Titles include "Anuuaki", "12th Planet", "Time", "Bubbler", "Ma'at Life", "Earthbound", "Weapon X", "More Brilliant Centre", and "The Box". LP, Vinyl record album
