O'Donel LevyTime Has Changed ... CD
LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
A great later set from 70s guitar genius O'Donel Levy – slightly different than his earlier work for the Groove Merchant label, but equally great in its own sort of way! Levy's still working here with producer Sonny Lester on the LC label – and the tone is great, with this clear, clean, soulful line that should have made O'Donel one of the giants of his generation – tripping along with these well-crafted solos that are a perfect fit for the laidback rhythms of the tunes! And if you're worried that the later date and different cover style is too much of a shift for Levy, don't – because there's plenty of greatness within – and the record really knocks it out of the park compared to some of his more mainstream contemporaries. Titles include the great "Butta" – plus "Love Will Never Die", "Have You Heard", "Dancing Girl", and "Time Has Changed". CD

Jimmy McGriffTailgunner ... LP
LC, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $5.99
Jimmy McGriff in a very cool 70s mode – hitting some of the fuller, more soul-based styles that Johnny Hammond and Jimmy Smith were exploring in the middle of the decade – while still also displaying a hell of a talent on the organ as well! The album has extra keyboards from Pat Rebillot and Paul Griffin – which makes for a nice mix of organ and electric piano sounds, plus some occasional moog that's very nicely placed – all backed by a largeish group that has tight horns, and some occasional soul vocals from Al Downing and Denise Wooten. The vocals are often an augmentation of the tunes, and there's still plenty of room for solos by Jimmy in the middle – on titles that include "Tailgunner", "Flexible Flyer", "Sky Hawk", "Grandma's Toe Jam", and "Bullfrog". ✨✧ Lonnie SmithFunk Reaction ... CD
LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet 70s groover from the great Lonnie Smith – a soulful little session that has the keyboardist really stretching out in some great ways! At the time, Smith fares a lot better than some of his late 60s jazz organ contemporaries – as he's got a great lean style, perfect for the decade's increasing use of electric keyboards and larger backings! This set's a great example of that style – as Smith moves way from his 60s soul jazz roots, into the soaring blend of jazz, funk, and soul that you'd also hear on Johnny Hammond albums of the time – almost more soul than jazz, given the presence of vocals on some cuts – but still always with more than enough room for the leader to stretch out and solo. Backings are nice and tight – and handled by Brad Baker (of B Baker Chocolate Company fame) – and tracks include "Funk Reaction", "For The Love Of It", "It's Changed", and "When The Night Is Right". LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from the B Baker Chocolate Company – a set that's equal parts fusion and soul, held together by these rich arrangements that really send the whole thing home! The album's never too slick, yet has a sense of perfection that matches some of the best soulful fusion dates at Blue Note or Fantasy in the mid 70s – a quality that's especially strong on the vocal tracks on the set – one of which features Lew Kirton in the lead! The players are all totally top-shelf – and include Lonnie Smith and Jimmy McGriff on keyboards, John Faddis and Marvin Stamm on trumpets, and Jimmy Ponder on guitar – and the set's got a beautiful balance that few other records like this can match. Lew Kirton sings on "It's Where You're Coming From", and "Dreamer" features Gene Scott – and instrumental tracks include the funky classic "Snow Blower", plus "Carousel" and "Spirit Level". CD

✨✧ Jimmy PonderAll Things Beautiful ... CD
LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet soulful lines from guitarist Jimmy Ponder – working here in a warm set of bigger backings that almost give the record the same feel as classic late 60s outings from Wes Montgomery, or some of the CTI work by George Benson! Backings are put together by Brad Baker – in that same great mix of jazz and soul he used with his B Baker Chocolate Company material – and although there's a bit of chorus vocals on the album (sung by a group that includes Gwen Guthrie and Jocelyn Brown), the main focus is on the soulful, chromatic lines of Ponder's guitar – which have a poise and focus here that really tops some of his earlier work. The groove is pretty super-dope throughout – that great late Groove Merchant approach to funky jazz – and titles include "Love Me Right", "Chasing That Face", "A Trip To The Stars", "A Clue", and "Turn". ✨✧ Joe ThomasHere I Come ... CD
LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soulful sounds from the great Joe Thomas – a reedman who was first known as the Ebony Godfather on some more rough-edged funk at the start of the 70s – but who's equally great here in a larger, warmer setting overall! The record follows the spirit of some of the others in the second chapter of the Groove Merchant label – that time when Sonny Lester changed things over to LRC/LC, and often worked in ways that maybe echoed more of the major label soul fusion styles, but always with a much hipper vibe. The backings here are directed by Brad Baker – who you'll know from the B Baker Chocolate Company work – a great fit for the tight solos from Thomas, who maybe comes across a bit like Grover Washington on Kudu/CTI. Titles include "Green Dragon", "Same Old Song", "Place In Space", "Gotcha", and "Here I Come". CD

✨✧ Wynton MarsalisThick In The South – Soul Gestures In Southern Blue Vol 1 ... CD
Columbia, 1991. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first in Wynton Marsalis' excellent Soul Gestures trilogy – a set that features some especially nice work from Joe Henderson on tenor sax! The set was recorded at a time when Henderson was really coming back into his own – and the long, extended tracks on the record really let Joe stretch out with the sort of freely expressive solos honed over previous decades of work! Henderson's presence brings a sharpness here that you might not expect – and a deeper sense of soul than some of Wynton's previous stiffer attempts at modernism. Other players include Marcus Roberts on piano – another great presence on the date – Bob Hurst on bass, and Jeff Watts and Elvin Jones on drums. Rudiger Carl IncKing Alcohol (New Version) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
FMP/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1972. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $15.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever on record from Rudiger Carl – and not just because the album is "dedicated to all drinker friends"! Despite that embrace of alcohol, the record's got a very sobering power – as the group is a free jazz trio, working in the best bracing early FMP way – with Carl on tenor, Gunter Christmann on trombone, and Detlef Shoenenberg on drums – all turning their instruments inside out as they madly, freely, explosively work off the power of one another! Christmann is especially amazing – and this album might well be to his trombone what the late 60s FMP sides were to Brotzmann's tenor – although Detlef's drums are pretty amazing too – very different than any contemporaries or precursors, and worth the price of admission alone. Titles include "Thrombose", "King Alcohol", "AEIOU", and "Rush Hour/Something/Triotrip". Plus, this 2CD reissue adds in an astounding 70 more minutes of unreleased recordings from the same sessions! ✨✧ Clarke Boland Big BandComplete Live Recordings At Ronnie Scott's – Volcano/Rue Chaptal ... CD
MPS/Rearward (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $11.99
A large group in a small club – the legendary Clarke Boland Big Band, playing at the home turf of one of their key members – tenorist Ronnie Scott! The set features a very legendary performance by the ensemble – a crack lineup that's easily one of the best ever sported by the CBBB – perfectly mixing American rhythms, and a trans-Atlantic lineup of soloists – all tied together with just the sort of rich arrangements that make the group so great! Things groove right from the get-go – thanks to a rhythm lineup that features Kenny Clarke on drums, and Francy Boland on piano – plus bassist Ron Matthewson, sitting in for the usual Jimmy Woode. The horn players really send things off, though – tight trumpets from Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman, and Dusko Goykovich; bold trombones from Ake Persson and Nat Peck; and some searing reed lines from Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Derek Humble on alto, Sahib Shihab on baritone, and Tony Coe on both tenor and clarinet. This CD features both the first and second sets at Scotts by the group – albums titled Volcano and Rue Chaptal – with titles that include "Volcano", "Griff's Groove", "Now Hear My Meanin", "Box 703 Washington DC", "Thence We Issued Out Again to See the Stars", "Rue Chaptal", "I Don't Want Nothin From Nobody & I Ain't Giving Nothin Away", "Sax No End", "Minor Blues", and "The Girl & The Turk". Sarah Webster FabioJujus – Alchemy Of The Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
An incredible album, and very unique! Sarah Webster Fabio was a hip 70s poet with a very righteous sound – and she's working here with funky backings by a tight group that includes family members, in a style that's similar to early 70s work by artists like Wanda Robinson and Camille Yarborough – both of whom also mixed together funk and poetry! The album's got a massive funky cut called "Sweet Songs" – the kind of groover we never tire of, with tight drums, great guitar, and wonderful vocals by Sarah herself. There's lots of other great tunes too – with titles that include "Juju For Grandma", "Still A Red Hot Axe", "Chromo", "If We Come As Soft Rain", and "Jujus/Alchemy Of The Blues". CD

FalconsI Found A Love ... CD
Relic, Early 60s. Used ... $7.99
Incredible work from one of the key groups in the early soul years! The Falcons were a Detroit based combo that had a monumental impact on the transition from doo wop to group soul – as they sung with a sound that really hinted at the coming years of southern soul, with a raw, honest, almost down-home quality that was missing from a lot of other groups in their scene. No surprise, though, the quintet featured Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd – both of whom sound as great on these sides as they did on their later hits – perhaps more so, as the recordings have a fantastically rough feel that's quite different from the cliches of later sides. 16 tracks in all – with titles that include "I Found A Love", "Oh Baby", "Feels Good", "Lonely Nights", "Take This Love I Got", "Anna", "Fine Fine Girl", "Part Time Love", and "Billy The Kid". A beautiful duo outing from bassist Charlie Haden and Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba – recorded at the Blue Note in Toyko in 2005 – finally given a much deserved release on Impulse after languishing unheard for a decade! It's a great little set, Haden laying down a stoic rhythm and providing lots of room for his partner to provide sweet piano melodies. Includes Haden's own wonderful piece "Sandino" and Rubalcaba's own "Transparence", plus the lovely, though melancholy-touched "Solamente Una Vez (You Belong To My Heart)", "En La Orilla Del Mundo (The Edge Of The World)", a nice long take on "My Love And I" and Ornette Coleman's "When Will The Blues Leave". Some of the fullest, freakiest sounds we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – and a set that almost has the contemporary combo resonating with some of the older psych and fuzz that often gets reissued on the Now Again label! JJ Whitefield – of Whitefield Brothers/Poets Of Rhythm fame – is at the helm of the group, and also handles the production – and the whole thing is a deep shift from the sharper, funkier style of his early material – as this record's really awash in fuzz and long, languorous space – drawing elements from older funk, jazz, and global elements, and pushing them all through a mighty cool psych-styled filter. Marja Burchard sings some cool wordless vocals on the record, but most of the focus here is instrumental – with great organ, vibes, moog, and plenty of fuzzy guitar. Walter JacksonWelcome Home – The Many Moods of Walter Jackson ... LP
Okeh, 1965. Very Good- ... $6.99
A sublime mix of new tunes and re-imagined standards – and a set that takes Walter Jackson into even more sophisticated soul territory than before! The record is proof that the up and coming soul artists of the 60s had a key place alongside the more established mainstream acts on the other side of the fence – as Walter's working here with arranger Riley Hampton to re-cast a number of familiar tunes in his cool Iceman soul mode – changing the themes, rhythms, and inflections of the tracks for a more contemporary soul market – and also interspersing them with a few great new songs of his own! The approach is amazing – far better than even Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson's work in a similar idiom – and the album features the sublime hit "Welcome Home", plus the Van McCoy tunes "Suddenly I'm All Alone", "Still At The Mercy Of Your Love", and "The Magic's Gone" – alongside versions of "Moon River", "Let It Be Me", "Imagination", and "My Funny Valentine". Cotillion/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $22.99
A fantastic collection of grooves from Mass Production – one of the best of the large funk ensembles to hit the mainstream at the end of the 70s – even though they didn't always get the success they deserved! That doesn't stop these guys from giving their all, though – super-sharp, super-tight instrumentation that comes down on the groove right from the get-go – and which moves with a fast funk energy that's a nice contrast to some of the stiffer, clunkier modes that were floating around at the time! These guys inherit the best impulses of Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang – and find a way to make their large lineup sound nice and lean, never too overcooked – with shifting vocals that really help keep things interesting throughout. The 3CD package features 45 tracks from their seven year stretch recording for Atlantic/Cotillion Records – and titles include "Sky High", "Groove Me", "Our Thought", "Bopp", "Turn Up The Music", "Diamond Chips", "Inner City", "Sun Dancer", "Victory 83", "Magic", "I Like To Dance", "Welcome To Our World", "Slow Bump", "Time Bomb", "Keep My Heart Together", "Cosmic Lust", "I Believe In Music", "Fun In The Sun", "Just Wanna Make A Dream Come True", "Firecracker", and "Eknuf (inst)". Funky b-boy classic! Bill RussoWorld Of Alcina ... LP
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good ... $7.99
One of the most ambitious recordings ever from Bill Russo – the composer/arranger who first rose to fame with Stan Kenton, and who's working here in an even more modern extension of Kentonite ideals! Side one of the record features Russo's beautiful composition "The World Of Alcina" – a tune originally written as a jazz ballet, but which comes across here with the fluid tones and deep colors of some of the more serious jazz soundtracks from the time. The 18 minute piece features some especially great work on horns – played by a large brace of brass instruments used with the careful, sensitive styles that clearly show an influence from Kenton. Side two features shorter tunes – most composed by Russo too, and played in ways that resonate more strongly with west coast small combo work of the time. There's a nice sense of counterpoint on most numbers, and a few tunes feature great interplay between Russo's valve trombone, Bill Porter's slide trombone, and the twin tenors of Sandy Mosse and Bill Trujillo – while others have a more open soloing style, with just Russo and Trujillo as the main horns. Rhythm is by Eddie Baker on piano, Israel Crosby on bass, and Mickey Simonetta on drums – and tracks include "For My Sister", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "L'Affair Bugs", "Bill's Blues", and "Speculum". Mellow work from Pharoah – a set of standards blown in a soulful late night style, with backing by William Henderson on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Ecclesion Wainwright on drums. The format is surprisingly captivating, largely because Pharoah's tone is always such a treat – and he sparkles with a majesty on the set that captures our ear a lot more than we expected! The whole thing's almost got the feel of some of Coltrane's earlier ballad work – and titles include "The Nearness Of You", "Nancy", "I Want To Talk About You", "Say It Over And Over Again", "Polkadots & Moonbeams", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". SantanaWelcome ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
Sadly, it's really easy to dismiss Santana, if only for his having been elevated to iconic status among hippies and classic rock lovers, in spite of the fact that he made a number of great records. This early 70s effort finds him moving in a more jazzy direction, with supple rhythms underpinning his guitar solos. There's even some outright funky moments, with the overall sound leaning towards a more spiritual vibe, no doubt the influence of collaborations with John McLaughlin and Alice Coltrane, who even helped arrange one number. Flora Purim, Leon Thomas and Joe Farrell all lend a helping hand too, with 9 tracks in all: "Welcome", "Love, Devotion & Surrender", "Samba De Sausalito", "When I Look Into Your Eyes", "Yours Is The Light", "Mother Africa","Light Of Life", "Flame Sky" and "Welcome". Third Ear BandAlchemy (180 gram brown vinyl pressing) ... LP
Harvest/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99
The amazing first album from Third Ear Band – a set that's maybe even more distinct than some of their later, better-known recordings! These guys emerged in the British scene at the end of the 60s – but they're not really psych, or prog – and although they have a love of ancient sounds, they're also not in any of the territory that was being explored by acid folk groups of the time! Instead, they've got this wonderful all-acoustic blend of reeds, stringed instruments, and percussion – all with a feel that seems to link together centuries with its own organic energy, but which also gives a bit of a nod to freer jazz elements of the time. At points, these guys almost sound like a looser, more-jamming version of Penguin Cafe Orchestra – but that's only part of the approach – as things are very unique throughout, in a blend of tablas, hand drums, oboe, recorder, viola, violin, cello, and slide pipes – served up on titles that include "Druid One", "Lark Rise", "Ghetto Raga" and "Stone Circle". Ken VandermarkUnexpected Alchemy (7CD set) ... CD
Not Two (Poland), 2019. New Copy 7CD ... $86.99
The title definitely gets it right – as the set's documents unexpected alchemy between reedman Ken Vandermark and a wonderful blend of improvisers – all recorded over the space of a few days in the Polish city of Krakow! The set's something of a follow-up to Vandermark's massive Alchemia box from 2005 – which also documented a long residency in that city – but the format here is a bit different, and also demonstrates just how much Ken and the other musicians have grown over the years! Each CD features a different concert performance, or performances – with different groupings of musicians, some that don't even include Vandermark. Lineups include Ken Vandermark dueting with Nate Wooley, Steve Noble playing solo, the duo of Ikue Mori and Mette Rasmussen, the duo of John Butcher and Nate Wooley, a solo performance by Joe McPhee, the duo of John Butcher and Ken Vandermark, a quartet with Nate Wooly and Kent Kessler, a duet between Kessler and McPhee, another duet between John Butcher and John Tilbury, and a trio with Hamid Drake, Eddie Prevost, and Vandermark. CD7 is something of a bonus – material recorded the following year in Munich – with a trio of Vandermark, Prevost, and Tilbury. CD

The set's actually got more Arp than moog, but still follows the spirit of some of the great moog instrumental records of the late 60s and early 70s – save for the fact that the rhythms are pure Trojan – nicely stepping in a rocksteady and reggae mode, while the cool keyboards do things over the top. ✨✧ Lenny Welch/OC SmithCadences – The Early Recordings 1957 to 1962 ... CD
Cadence/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Early work from two different singers – each featured here on rare singles for the Cadence Records label! First up is Lenny Welch – a singer with a voice that's as smooth as butter, and a key link between some of the more pop-oriented vocalists of the 50s, and the new generation of 60s "icemen" like Jerry Butler and Chuck Jackson! Like those two, Lenny's got a great way of putting over a sad tune with just the right balance of emotion – never too overdone, nor self-indulgent – but perfectly poised with a nicely mature quality. And Lenny's also a great singer on a more upbeat number – a surprisingly rocking vocalist when he wants to be, as you'll hear on some of the more groove-oriented titles on this set – tunes that have a classy early soul approach, one that's almost a bit like uptown soul of a few years later. CD features 19 Welch titles – including "Rocket To The Moon", "I'd Like To Know", "Darlin", "You Don't Know Me", "Pony Time", "You Can Have Her", "Mama Don't You Hit That Boy", "Taste Of Honey", "Congratulations Baby", and "The Last Star Of Evening". The bigger surprise here is OC Smith – recording her as Ocie Smith – years before his big country soul hits at the end of the 60s, and in a style that's as cool and classy as Lenny Welch, but maybe a bit more rocking too – with nice use of electric bass at the core of larger arrangements, and a nice sense of rhythm that often brings in a bit of jukebox mambo or popcorn soul. CD features 6 titles by Ocie Smith – including "Lighthouse", "Bad Man Of Missouri", "Forbidden Fruit", "If You Don't Love Me", "Too Many", and "Slow Walk". CD

✨✧ Joyce Elaine Yuille with Timo LassyWelcome To My World ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2015. New Copy ... $16.99
A hell of a singer, working here with some wonderful grooves from Timo Lassy – an artist we've really loved for his own jazzy projects in the past! Joyce Elaine Yuille has this style that's very classic, and very groovy – jazz-based, with a nice rasp in her voice that really brings out some of the more soulful qualities in the music – and able to write her own lyrics, too – which makes for a wonderful record that's full of fresh sounds at every turn! Lassy's music is wonderful too – tightly snapping on the rhythms, but never forced – and with a jazz current that's a nice change from other contemporary soul production, which might have been added to the record with a bigger label. But clearly, the real star of the show is Joyce – a talent that will definitely be huge in years to come – a rock-solid singer and songwriter who may well turn out to be the female equivalent of Gregory Porter. Titles include "Come With Me", "Tryin Times", "Chaos", "It's Madness", "Make Right", "Welcome To My World", "Follow The Sun", and "Late I Rise". CD

Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet mix of jazz, funk, and some tighter instrumental modes – a set that takes all the best energy of the Flying Dutchman label, and packs it into shorter tracks that have a very groovy feel! At some level, the album's a bit like the work that Tom Scott was doing for the label at the time, but with a more compact vibe – and maybe more ensemble focus than longer solos – but still a great sound overall! Scott's actually on the record, playing reeds along with the great Plas Johnson – and other players include Dennis Budimir on guitar and Emil Richards on percussion – but Ron Anthony handles the main guitar work himself. The title cut is a great remake of the naturally funky "Oh Calcutta" – and other titles include "I Am Yellow", "Ballad Of John & Yoko", and "Waltz Of The Groupies". CD

✨✧ Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Amazingly hard to find funk album on RCA! The Soulciety group was the brainchild of Boobie Knight, and they were one of the many funky groups that fell under the supervision of Harvey Fuqua while he was working for RCA. Boobie's group has a totally different sound than the others on the label, though, and the album's a complicated mix of soul, funk, and heavy-duty jamming. AJP, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky madness – and one of the greatest funky instrumental albums ever! A totally massive bit of funk that's way more than just plain "rare" (which can sometimes also mean snoozy for collectors!) Malcolm's a funky bandleader from Kingston, Jamaica – and he's got an approach that's solidly rooted in American funk, but which also has slight (very slight) touches of Carribean rhythms. The record's not really reggae or rocksteady, but it's got a messed up groove that works perfectly – as the sharp funky instrumental tunes crack out with these odd jagged edges, or weirdly paced rhythms that make them even more compelling. A wonderful record, and way past the usual funky instrumental album. Just about every cut is excellent – and titles include "Bustin Outta The Ghetto", "Funky Junction", "Move With The Beat", "Track Full Of Soul", "Pound For Pound", and "Rockin In My Pocket". Metro, 1958. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A strangely split LP, but important for the way that it captures Rollins during that pivotal year of 1958. Like some of his other sides from the time, this LP features Sonny with only bass and drums behind him – blowing free, but quite tightly, with no sloppiness at all. Tracks include "John's Other Theme", "Limehouse Blues", and "You Are Too Beautiful" – all crafted with that searching angular style that made these moments in Rollins' career so great. The LP is completed by 2 tracks recorded in LA by Teddy Edwards, in the company of pianist Joe Castro, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Billy Higgins – nothing fancy, but nicer than most Edwards material from the time. ✨✧ Nino RotaFellini Soundtracks (Early Movies/La Strada/Notti Di Cabiria/La Dolce Vita/8 1/2) (5CD set) ... CD
DOL (Russia), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
5CDs, and a set of great soundtracks to early films by director Federico Fellini – music that forever set the standard for a new generation of film composers! First up is La Strada – the brilliant mid 50s filled that starred a young Giulettia Masini as one of the saddest clowns ever to grace the silver screen – an amazing performance supported here by key early work from Nino Rota. Rota's score is a mix of circus-like themes and darker moments – all delivered with a dynamic energy that's really wonderful – almost leaping out of the speakers at some points, then sliding into shimmering, watery depths at others. Titles include "Il Pranzo Di Nozze", "Tema Della Strada", "Gelsomina", "Il Bambino Malato", "Zampano Abbandona Gelsomina", and "Addio Del Matto". Next is Le Notti Di Cabiria – aka Nights Of Cabiria – a film of similar vintage, with an equally wonderful score by Rota! The music's a bit more lush this time around – fuller orchestrations at times, but always with that ear for an isolated melody amidst the larger body – that sense of personality that makes Rota's soundtracks so great. Titles include "Picnic Al Divino Amore", "L'Illusionista", "Il Trasloco", "Aspettando Giorgio", and "Le Notti Di Cabiria". La Dolce Vita is one of the all-time classic Italian film scores – a groundbreaking soundtrack from Nino Rota, and one of the first Italian works of this nature to hit the record racks in the US! The music is a beautiful blend of whimsy and sadness – penned by Rota with a variety of light themes that dance together with a dreamy sort of quality – romantic one minute, dramatic the next – always handled with Nino's inventive sense of musical play! A delight throughout – with titles that include "La Doce Vita", "Cadillac", "Via Veneto", "Titoli Di Testa", and "Valzer". 8 1/2 is beautiful work by Nino Rota – filled with the kind of classic themes that distinguished his best work for Fellini. Carlo Savina conducted, and he does an excellent job with Rota's ideas – crafting them into short little packets of sound, woven tightly into little balls that pass back and forth as the mood of the film changes, in a similar mode to the scoring for La Dolce Vita. Titles include "Cadillac", "Cimitero", "Discesa Ai Fanghi", "La Passerella D'Addio", "Concertino Alle Terme", and "E Poi". Last up is a special soundtrack – featuring works from very early films by Fellini – including Il Bidone, I Vitelloni, Un Agenzia Matrimoniale, Lo Sceicco Bianco, and La Grande Seduzione. CD

A real lost treasure for fans of Zoot Sims – a well-done live recording from the mid 50s, featuring longish tracks that have Zoot blowing with a trio led by Joe Castro! Castro's a under-acknowledge piano talent from the LA scene of the time – a player with a soulful edge on his best recordings, of which this previously-unissued set now stands! Castro's trio on the set features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums – and the tracks are long, and very well recorded, especially for a live session of the time. The overall feel is very much in the mode of some of the best work on Prestige from the period, and titles include "Blues For Nat", "It's Always You", "Night In Tunisia", and "Swinging With Rudolph". Harvest/EMI, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album
(Original US pressing! Cover has some light wear, and a cutout hole in the corner. Vinyl is nice.)

✨✧ Collin WalcottCloud Dance ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful set of world jazz atmospherics from Collin Walcott – a set that features his work on sitar and tabla upfront, plus some other great ECM touches from John Abercrombie on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums! The album works a lot better than other sessions of this type, and has really stood the test of time well – partly because the spacious approach used, which never hits you too over the top, nor sounds like a gimmicky or forced style of music. Titles include "Prancing", "Night Glider", "Scimitar", "Vedana", "Easter Song", and "Cloud Dance". CD
(Out of print early pressing.)

✨✧ VariousWelcome To Paradise – Italian Dream House 1989 to 1993 Vol 2 ... LP
Safe Trip (Netherlands), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at this sometimes-missed chapter in Italian music – a moment when the Italo Club sound of the 80s had transformed into a scene that gave us some of the cleanest, leanest house music of the time! Earlier Italian imports had a big impact on the birth of house music in Chicago – and a few years later, those forward-thinking sounds were used to bring a needed revamp to Italian club as well – as you'll hear in these wonderfully-executed cuts that often have the best spare sounds of the US underground, mixed with some classic elements that warm things up in a mighty nice way! Both volumes are filled with well-chosen cuts that never got the kind of attention they should have at the time – and titles on this second part include "Welcome To Paradise (nightfly version)" by Z99, "Trasparenza" by Extreme, "Il Sole (deep mix)" by Q Base, "Dreams (club)" by The Sky, "Elements" by Leo Anibaldi, "Somnambulism" by Morenas, "Emotions" by 707 Boys, "A Key To Heaven For A Heavenly Trance" by Sasha, and "Octivation" by Transitive Elements. A wild mix of hip hop and avant pop spearheaded by Alchemist & Oh No – put together as an "inspired by" soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto V! The sprawling and impressive guest list includes Freddie Gibbs, Action Bronson, Ariel Pink, Phantogram, A$ap Ferg, Little Dragon, Wavves and more. ✨✧ Susan Alcorn/Joe McPhee/Ken VandermarkInvitation To A Dream ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Titles include "Invitation To A Dream", "The Eyes Of Memory", "Rise & Rise", "Every Season Has Its Reason", and "I Am Because You Are". CD
