A completely random assortment of 12" records – both LPs and singles – some in good shape, some totally beat up! We make these boxes at random, and seal them tightly – and even we don't know what's in them. Keep in mind that this vinyl has been through the regular racks – and the Bargain Basement – and some of it might have defects, some may have damaged or missing covers, and the vinyl will mostly likely be a mix of 12" singles and full albums – and might, in some occasions, also include some 10" pressings from the early 50s. Think of the contents as "raw material" or "space fillers" – vinyl to be used for projects, decorations, or even things like art installations or set dressing. A surprising slice of work from the 70s – three different albums all released under various guises by Armenian American reedman Souren Baronian – all put out on his own Carlee label, and done in a very cool mix of styles! Baronian blows both familiar American horns and more exotic instrumentation – sometimes with snakey qualities that echo both Egyptian music and Klezmer, other times with different inflections depending on the setting – and that setting varies here depending on the different records – as they each have a slightly different vibe! These are the sort of sets that would have easily been missed otherwise – either thought of as some 70s knockoff, or watered-down material for the crowds at a tourist spot – but they're wonderful throughout, with a depth of expression that really holds on throughout all the albums. Killer work from a group of American players who've all found a strong outlet for their talents on the Red Records label – an Italian company, but one that's really done a great job of keeping the fires going for players who sometimes don't get as much of a chance to record in the US! Every member of the group here is great – Jerry Bergonzi on tenor, Bobby Watson on alto and soprano, Kenny Barron on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and either Curtis Lundy or David Finck on bass. The tunes are mostly originals by group members, which further makes the set sparkle – giving it a sense of originality that's quite different than the usual standards that seem to come up on other all-star sessions. Watson's horns, as always, are great – and Bergonzi's deeper tones provide a great sense of balance – all warmed up nicely by Barron's piano. Most folks know The Foundations for one big crossover hit that still gets a lot of oldies radio play – but the group have a heck of a lot more to offer than that, as you'll hear in this wonderful collection that not only features all their 7" single releases from the UK, but also includes later solo material from the group's lead singer, Clem Curtis! The group were initially a bunch of British lads inspired by the sound of Motown, and they hooked up with Curtis, a singer from Trinidad – who really gave them the sound they wanted in the lead, and helped further the important identity of the group as a mixed-race act. Their sound is wonderfully tight – kind of a small group take on the larger studio majesty of Detroit soul – but with some nice British touches too, and a great sense of songwriting that gave the group plenty of original material along the way – a good deal of which you'll hear on this set. The girls have a style that's similar to Willie's work with Al Green on the first batch of tunes – and which then opens into more of an Emotions-like style on later tracks – all the while sticking to a strong female harmony sound that never falls into the cloying style of other girl groups of the time. The set begins with the album Take A Heart – a searing set from the mid 60s wave of the British scene – delivered with this mix of tunefulness and raw guitars that's totally great, echoed most strongly in the vocals, which really have an edge, even when delivering familiar themes on the lyrics – moodier than most, and in a really great way! An incredible snapshot of the funky soul genius of Sly Stone in an early transitional period – featuring all the known recordings of his short-lived Stone Flower label and production house from 1969-1970! Sly was a rising star at this point, and while the Stone Flower Productions name had been established already for Sly & The Family Stone's work-to-date, there was a brief period when he and manager David Kapralik set out make Stone Flower an official management and production house – and recorded some great tunes with female vocal trio Little Sister, funky soul singer and harmonica player Joe Hicks and funk rock sextet 6ix – as well as some gems sung by Sly himself. Sly & The Family Stone were soon to take off in a really huge way, his business relationship with Kapalik was becoming strained, and other factors behind-the-scenes made it impossible for Stone Flower Productions to really take root, but this brief period is fantastic. We're so glad it's been dug up and collected here! The cuts are primarily written and produced by Sly Stone – with Sly out front on "Just Like A Baby", "Africa", "Spirit" and "Scared" – and other great tracks include "You're The One" and "Somebody's Watching You" by Little Sister, "Home Sweet Home (Part 2)" and "I'm Going Home (Part 1)" by Joe Hicks, "Trying To Make You Feel Good", "You Can, We Can" by 6ix and more. 18 tracks in all – with a nice booklet of notes by Alec Palao, and an interview with the elusive Sly Stone himself! The vibe here follows perfectly from Roy's classic late 70s work on Polydor – and his famous album with Ramp – with a wicked blend of jazz, soul, and funk – all given a very sophisticated, righteous spin – with rhythms and instrumentation that are way different than the mainstream! Hip hop, street soul, and lots lots more – a really revolutionary selection of music from the legendary Celluloid Records – a label that was virtually a genre unto itself! Celluloid was a key force tying together the New York downtown scene at the start of the 80s, and the postcolonial music world of Paris – and as a result, they always operated with a culture-crossing style that few other companies of the time managed to hit – merging together sounds in really unlikely ways, and often coming up with fresh new styles in the process! The label's known for crate-diggers for its hip hop releases – and to world music fans for its electric Africa work – but they also were on the forefront of New York No Wave, avant jazz, and post-punk – and somehow found a way to integrate both young new talents, and older experimentalists who still had plenty to offer. We're not sure what "equidity" means – but the grooves here are so great, we're hardly going to ask for a definition! The package is filled with plenty of the funk promised in the title – but often in ways that are really odd and offbeat – just what you'd expect from a mighty trip through the legendary P&P Records archives! The 4CD collection is a great counterpart to the book of the same name – but even if you don't pick up the book, the music alone tells a fantastic story – the evolution of jazz in from initial modern moments at the end of the 50s, through spiritual exploration and new freedoms of the 60s, to new righteous messages of the early 70s – all recorded beautifully by one of the greatest labels in the jazz business during the entire stretch! A very groovy look at a very groovy record label – LA powerhouse White Whale Records, home to some mighty fine sounds in the second half of the 60s! As you'd guess from the title, there's a slight current of trippiness running through this material, but it's often blended with a really strong sense of production and a nice ear for a hook – maybe a bit like A&M Records, who might be a comparison to some of the work here – as White Whale always had a careful ear for the up-and-coming, and gave them great freedom to do their thing, and the right sort of production and presentation to make everything come out groovy! One Der Ful/
An unassuming cover, but a set that's got a really colorful batch of rare Chicago soul – including a number of never-issued tracks from the legendary One-Der-Ful Records! The label was one of the true indie greats in Chicago back in the 60s – almost as much a force for local soul as bigger imprints like Chess, Okeh, and Brunswick – and home to an equally great array of artists – including a few who'd later hit big on different labels! An instant party in a single package – a set that brings together a whole host of rare singles from back in the day – all work that's almost an equal blend of old school funk and early hip hop! The work here comes from the Spring label and related Posse imprint – a company who were around on the New York scene to issue plenty of soul and funk during the 70s – then made the move into hip hop at the end of the decade, yet in a way that also brought some of their funky currents forward! Where other labels were maybe using a lean approach and more records as the basis for cuts, Spring already had access to some great groups to back up the MCs – and the result is a batch of funky cuts that are already primed for a party crowd in the South Bronx! As the 80s move in, the cuts use more beats and electro elements – yet that older ear for funk is still nicely in place, and really keeps things moving throughout.
