Bulk Vinyl Records60 Count Box of Random Bulk Vinyl ... Misc
Good ... $4.99
A completely random assortment of 12" records – both LPs and singles – some in good shape, some totally beat up! We make these boxes at random, and seal them tightly – and even we don't know what's in them. Keep in mind that this vinyl has been through the regular racks – and the Bargain Basement – and some of it might have defects, some may have damaged or missing covers, and the vinyl will mostly likely be a mix of 12" singles and full albums – and might, in some occasions, also include some 10" pressings from the early 50s. Think of the contents as "raw material" or "space fillers" – vinyl to be used for projects, decorations, or even things like art installations or set dressing. At less than a dime a record, the price is certainly right! Misc
(Given the nature of these bulk vinyl records, they cannot be returned, and must ship through FedEx. All sales are final. Shipping to US only.)

✨✧ Souren BaronianMiddle Eastern Soul Of Carlee Records ... LP
Modern Harmonic, Mid 70s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $34.99 36.99
A surprising slice of work from the 70s – three different albums all released under various guises by Armenian American reedman Souren Baronian – all put out on his own Carlee label, and done in a very cool mix of styles! Baronian blows both familiar American horns and more exotic instrumentation – sometimes with snakey qualities that echo both Egyptian music and Klezmer, other times with different inflections depending on the setting – and that setting varies here depending on the different records – as they each have a slightly different vibe! These are the sort of sets that would have easily been missed otherwise – either thought of as some 70s knockoff, or watered-down material for the crowds at a tourist spot – but they're wonderful throughout, with a depth of expression that really holds on throughout all the albums. The set brings together the records Middle Eastern Soul by Bob Tashijan & Souren Baronian, The Exciting Music Of The Nor-Ikes by The Nor-Ikes featuring Souren Baronian, and Hye Inspiration by Bob Tashijan & Souren Baronian with The Oud Of John Tarpinian. Jerry Bergonzi, Bobby Watson, Kenny Barron, et alRed Records All Stars – Together Again For The First Time ... CD
Red (Italy), 1996. Used ... $14.99
Killer work from a group of American players who've all found a strong outlet for their talents on the Red Records label – an Italian company, but one that's really done a great job of keeping the fires going for players who sometimes don't get as much of a chance to record in the US! Every member of the group here is great – Jerry Bergonzi on tenor, Bobby Watson on alto and soprano, Kenny Barron on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and either Curtis Lundy or David Finck on bass. The tunes are mostly originals by group members, which further makes the set sparkle – giving it a sense of originality that's quite different than the usual standards that seem to come up on other all-star sessions. Watson's horns, as always, are great – and Bergonzi's deeper tones provide a great sense of balance – all warmed up nicely by Barron's piano. Titles include "That's All Folks", "Look At You", "Out House", "De Voyeur A Voyeur", "Those Who Get From Having Not", "Out Of The Frying Pan", and "Free Movement". CD

Beverley's/Trojan, Mid 60s. New Copy ... On December 31, 2023
The roots of a legend – and a massive look at the early work of the great Desmond Dekker – the singer who would soon explode on the global scene as one of the first big ambassadors of Jamaican music, heard here on a whole host of singles done at the start of his career! The set brings together titles that Dekker cut for producer Leslie Kong – some as a solo act, some as a member of The Aces – and the package includes both sides of every single, so that you'll also get some very cool instrumental cuts from Roland Alphonso and the Beverleys All-Stars! Titles include "It's A Shame", "007 (Shanty Town)", "Wise Man", "Madgie", "Sinners Prepare", "Parents", "You've Got Your Troubles", "Keep A Cool Head", "Sweet Music", "Unity", "Dracula", "Pretty Africa", "Sabotage", and "Mount Zion". Kevin Fingier CollectiveEl Sonido De Fingier Records ... CD
Fingier/Acid Jazz (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really cool collection of cuts that were originally issued as 7" singles in recent years, but which work perfectly together here as a full length set that introduces the world to the deeply funky talents of Kevin Finigier! Kevin hails from Argentina, but has a deep love of American soul and funk, particularly the 60s variant that was big in the UK mod scene – and here, he serves up some wicked grooves that may well be some of the best contemporary work in this mode we've heard for years! The production is nice and gritty – really back at the level of the indie funky 45 scene from back in the day – and the set mixes instrumental numbers that have a wicked sharp explosion of sounds with some heavy vocal tracks that are equally nice. The Kevin Fingier Collective deliver the cuts "Addis Ababa", "Sunglasses After Dark", "El Basement", "Latin Dynamite", and "Cocktail De Medianoche" – and other tracks include "I Love Without A Love" by Jo Ann Hamilton, "Why Don't You Go Home" by Diane Ward, "Um Brilho Novo" by Josi Dias, "Kairo Bancou Moulu" by Abdoulaye Badiane, and "Don't Wanna Cry No More" by Gerri Granger. FoundationsFoundations – The Pye Records As, Bs, & Eps ... CD
Pye/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 19.99
Most folks know The Foundations for one big crossover hit that still gets a lot of oldies radio play – but the group have a heck of a lot more to offer than that, as you'll hear in this wonderful collection that not only features all their 7" single releases from the UK, but also includes later solo material from the group's lead singer, Clem Curtis! The group were initially a bunch of British lads inspired by the sound of Motown, and they hooked up with Curtis, a singer from Trinidad – who really gave them the sound they wanted in the lead, and helped further the important identity of the group as a mixed-race act. Their sound is wonderfully tight – kind of a small group take on the larger studio majesty of Detroit soul – but with some nice British touches too, and a great sense of songwriting that gave the group plenty of original material along the way – a good deal of which you'll hear on this set. The 2CD package features 39 single tracks by The Foundations – including "Back On My Feet Again", "Come On Back To Me", "I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving", "Am I Grooving You", "New Direction", "Jerking The Dog", "Baby Now That I've Found You", "In The Bad Bad Old Days", "Born To Live Born To Die", "Solomon Grundy", "Till Night Brought Day", "Waiting On The Shores Of Nowhere", and "Build Me Up Buttercup". Also includes mid 70s solo work by Clem Curtis – five more tracks that include "Point Of No Return", "Time Alone Will Tell", "Mountain Over The Hill", and "I've Never Found A Girl". CD

Don Gardner & Dee Dee FordI Need Your Lovin – The Fire Records Sessions ... CD
Fire/Sunset Blvd, Early 60s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
Storming soul from Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford – one of the hardest-hitting duos of the early 60s, and a pair who set the tone for countless other acts to come! The style here is definitely soul, but steeped in plenty of R&B too – partly from Dee Dee's smoking work on Hammond, and the way her vocals come together with Don's – almost more live than any other studio work of its type – with a spontaneous vibe that always kept the Gardner/Ford singles mighty interesting! Don had worked previously with Jimmy Smith and Groove Holmes as the organist in his group – but when Dee Dee hit the mix, the sound really took off – as Gardner's rich vocals found their perfect counterpart in the energy of the young keyboardist and singer. The set's one of the best we've ever seen to bring together their work for the Fire label – and features their full album I Need Your Lovin, plus 18 more bonus tracks from singles – titles that include "You Said", "Make The Girl Love Me", "I Need Your Lovin", "I Left There Crying", "This Lonely Place", "Dog Eat Dog", "The Quicker The Better", "Bad Luck", "TCB", "Forever In Your Lover's Arms", "Everybody Needs Love", "Lead Me On", "Let's Go To The Party", and a rare complete unedited version of "I Need Your Lovin". BBE (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $16.99 32.99
An incredible tribute to the legendary Strata Records in Detroit – performed by Jazzanova with a host of other guests – and at a level that's maybe the greatest thing the group has ever given us on record! The vibe here is a lot more Strata and spiritual than the style you'd expect from Jazzanova – as they take on tunes by label legends like Lyman Woodard, Kenny Cox, Sam Sanders, Maulawi, and other talents from the same Motor City underground of the 70s that gave the world Tribe Records. Instrumentation is a blend of Fender Rhodes and lots of live jazz work on flute, tenor, trombone, and trumpet – sometimes topped with vocals from Sean Haefeli, who really helps open up the soulful side of the tunes! Wonderful throughout, better than we might have even guessed – with titles that include "Joy Road", "Face At My Window", "Ortotundes", "Loser", "Scorpio's Child", "Creative Musicians", "Lost My Love", "Inside Ourselves", and "Saturday Night Special". HoZac, 2022. New Copy ... $28.99
A tremendous look at a very cool label – one that was a key part of the San Francisco scene during the start of the 80s – and one of the city's few indies, in comparison to the wealth of record companies down in LA! The story of the label is as much the story of its founder Howie Klein – and both are told here in beautiful detail, alongside an image-heavy presentation that mixes color and black and white pictures throughout the very long book. Things begin with a look at Klein and the changing SF scene in the years when punk rock was chasing away some of the hippies – and the book then moves into a group-by-group look at all the acts who recorded for 415 Records – a few of whom broke big on the mainstream, many more who are best remembered for their records on the label. Book is softcover, 360 pages, and filled with images throughout! Book

Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... LP
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $13.99 34.99
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Hear LP, Vinyl record album

Janko Nilovic & Davy JonesDefinitive Juju Records Collection 1968/1969 ... LP
JuJu/Broc (France), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 42.99
A really rare slice of work from the funky genius Janko Nilovic – not the sound library grooves which have gained him fame over the decades – but instead a batch of rare cuts from his own short-lived record label, which he formed in 1968 with soul singer Davy Jones! Nilovic and Jones wrote all the tunes on the set, and they're presented by a variety of different artists – but have a unified feel that certainly comes from the strong instrumentation provided by Janko! The tunes are in a mix of mod 60s styles – some soul, some Hammond-heavy groovers, and some with a more expansive vibe that's almost a psychedelic take on the spirit of French pop during the period. The set features every a and b-side of the six singles issued by the label – plus four more bonus remixes – and titles include "Voodoo Juju Obsession (parts 1 & 2)" by K Ptyacunthapuserectus, "Lover's Summer Song" and "Moon Man" by Bobby Cannon, "Restless Gringo" and "The Lost & The Lonely" by Spiritus M, "Groovy Kinda Samba" and "The Juju Is The Thing" by Abra K Dabra, "Treasure Lee" and "Voodoo Juju" by Killer Steen, and "Tinka Bell" and "There's A Little Old Lady" by Tinka Bell. Hi Records/Right Stuff, 1970s. Used ... $7.99
Less funk than the title might imply, but still plenty darn great – thanks to a strong helping of work from Ann Peebles legendary years at Hi Records! Back in the 70s, Ann's work for Hi was second only to labelmate Al Green – and like Green, she worked in a similar slow-burning style that set a whole new sound for southern soul – one that updated an older Memphis mode into a more sophisticated, more adult groove that made tremendous use of Peebles' magnificent vocals! This 21 track package features some of the best tunes from those years – a great overview that includes "I Can't Stand The Rain", "99 LBs", "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down", "Come To Mama", "Beware", "Slipped Tripped & Fell In Love", and "I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home". The complete Hi Records recordings of Quiet Elegance – a great 70s soul female trio formed by two former members of The Glories, and one of Martha & The Vandellas – who recorded for Hi with some mighty great production work from Willie Mitchell! The girls have a style that's similar to Willie's work with Al Green on the first batch of tunes – and which then opens into more of an Emotions-like style on later tracks – all the while sticking to a strong female harmony sound that never falls into the cloying style of other girl groups of the time. This is great stuff – the kind of lost soul that needs further discovering – something that's easy to do, given the set's great notes, and inclusion of rare bonus tracks. A huge package of material from The Sorrows – one full album, a wealth of rare singles, and even some solo material by group member Don Fardon too! The set begins with the album Take A Heart – a searing set from the mid 60s wave of the British scene – delivered with this mix of tunefulness and raw guitars that's totally great, echoed most strongly in the vocals, which really have an edge, even when delivering familiar themes on the lyrics – moodier than most, and in a really great way! The set then moves into a massive 28 more tracks that make up the a-sides and b-sides of the group's singles for Pye Records at the time – titles that include "Baby", "Gonna Find A Cave", "We Should Get Along Fine", "Pink Purple Yellow & Red", "My Gal", "Don't Sing No Sad Songs For Me", "Hooky", "Vivi", "Armchair King", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". The set then concludes with 10 more solo tracks from Don Fardon – some of the hardest to find material in the collection, and some of the most interesting too. Titles include "Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian", "Daytripper", "Coming On Strong", "Ruby's Picture On My Wall", "We Can Make It Together", "Dreamin Room", and "I Need Somebody". 50 tracks in all! Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $37.99 39.99
An incredible snapshot of the funky soul genius of Sly Stone in an early transitional period – featuring all the known recordings of his short-lived Stone Flower label and production house from 1969-1970! Sly was a rising star at this point, and while the Stone Flower Productions name had been established already for Sly & The Family Stone's work-to-date, there was a brief period when he and manager David Kapralik set out make Stone Flower an official management and production house – and recorded some great tunes with female vocal trio Little Sister, funky soul singer and harmonica player Joe Hicks and funk rock sextet 6ix – as well as some gems sung by Sly himself. Sly & The Family Stone were soon to take off in a really huge way, his business relationship with Kapalik was becoming strained, and other factors behind-the-scenes made it impossible for Stone Flower Productions to really take root, but this brief period is fantastic. We're so glad it's been dug up and collected here! The cuts are primarily written and produced by Sly Stone – with Sly out front on "Just Like A Baby", "Africa", "Spirit" and "Scared" – and other great tracks include "You're The One" and "Somebody's Watching You" by Little Sister, "Home Sweet Home (Part 2)" and "I'm Going Home (Part 1)" by Joe Hicks, "Trying To Make You Feel Good", "You Can, We Can" by 6ix and more. 18 tracks in all – with a nice booklet of notes by Alec Palao, and an interview with the elusive Sly Stone himself! A fantastic tribute to one of the greatest soul labels of the 80s – the groundbreaking Uno Melodic imprint, started by soul legend Roy Ayers as a showcase for some of his more creative projects! The vibe here follows perfectly from Roy's classic late 70s work on Polydor – and his famous album with Ramp – with a wicked blend of jazz, soul, and funk – all given a very sophisticated, righteous spin – with rhythms and instrumentation that are way different than the mainstream! That doesn't mean that these tunes aren't groovers – just that many were so far ahead of their time, they've only gotten full acclaim in recent decade – thanks to new discovery by DJs and hip hoppers, who've sampled more than a few of these cuts. The whole thing is wonderful – with a strong focus on some of the female singers that Roy was working with – and titles include "Remember To Remember" by Rick Holmes, "It's Your Love" and "I Know You Care" by Ethel Beatty, "Interlude" by Justo Almario, "Baby Don't You Know (inst)" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Just Keep My Boogie" by Jaymz Bedford, "Everybody" and "Chicago" by Roy Ayers, "Give Me Your Love" and "You Can't Turn Me Away" by Sylvia Striplin, and the cuts "Sing Me", "I Knew That Love", "Ladies Of The Eighties", and "Turned On To You" by Eighties Ladies. Celluloid/Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Hip hop, street soul, and lots lots more – a really revolutionary selection of music from the legendary Celluloid Records – a label that was virtually a genre unto itself! Celluloid was a key force tying together the New York downtown scene at the start of the 80s, and the postcolonial music world of Paris – and as a result, they always operated with a culture-crossing style that few other companies of the time managed to hit – merging together sounds in really unlikely ways, and often coming up with fresh new styles in the process! The label's known for crate-diggers for its hip hop releases – and to world music fans for its electric Africa work – but they also were on the forefront of New York No Wave, avant jazz, and post-punk – and somehow found a way to integrate both young new talents, and older experimentalists who still had plenty to offer. This package finally does Celluloid justice – and goes way past the few simplistic comps of the label's work over the years – training the skilled Strut ear to the whole thing, and also serving up the full story of the label in the process. Titles include "I'm The One" by Material, "Day Tripper" by Shockabilly, "Tele Apres La Meteo" by Fredinand, "Disco Rough (long version)" by Mathematiques Modernes, "Electrique Sylvie (full length version)" by Modern Guy, "Mean Machine Chant/Mean Machine" by Last Poets, "Abele Dance ('85 rmx)" by Manu Dibango, "Change The Beat (French & English)" by Fab 5 Freddy, "The Escapades Of Futura 2000" by Futura 2000 with The Clash, and "Downing Street Rock" by Winston Edwards & Blackbeard. 26 tracks in all! Because (France), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
Really cool cuts from the French club scene of the 70s – a weird and wonderful assortment of sounds that all came from producer Daniel Vangarde and his Zagora Record label – a place where all sorts of criss-crossing styles could work together in a really wonderful way! Some moments have cool moogy electronics, others take off from funky French soundtrack productions, and others echo the currents of soul and global music that was getting a chance to try something new in the French studios – clearly given plenty of the right inspiration from Vangarde himself! Most of these cuts never got release in the US, and the selection of tracks is wonderful – a very fresh take on territory we thought we knew already – on selections that include "Midemman (Theme Midem 74)" by The Lovelets, "Dancin Machine" by Who's Who", "I'm Looking For Jeremy" by Soul Iberica Band, "Laugh" by La Boca, "Voyager II (12" version)" by Starbow, "Moog Jealousy" by The Electronic System, "Des Que T'As Dit Disco T'As Tout Dit (ext)" by Rocky & Vandella, "Kono Samourai" by Yamasuki, "Greek Girls" by The Great Disco Bouzuki Band, "Let Me Love You Tonight" by Vicky Edimo, "Come To America (disco inst)" by Gibson Brothers, "La Nuit Des Requins" by La Compagnie Creole, "AIE (A Mwana)" by Black Blood, and "La Poursuite" by Daniel Vangarde himself. P-Vine (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $29.99 36.99 About October 18, 2023
A great presentation of work from the legendary Tribe Records of Detroit – all handled by DJ Muro, who's posed on the front in a way that recalls one of the label's rarest albums! The style here is different than other collections of Tribe Records material – as Muro goes for cuts that showcase some of the more soulful, funky sides of the label – still very righteous overall, but with less of the longer or more avant-oriented tracks that came from the Detroit underground at the time. Muro's been giving us amazing collections for many years, and this one is no exception – a fantastic demonstration of his magical ear, as he makes his way through cuts. LP, Vinyl record album

The cover is retro, and the sound within are too – a sweet set of tracks from the Dutch and Italian scenes, all served up in a mix of mod, funk, and soundtrack-styled modes! The groove is every bit as playful and festive as you might expect from the image on the front – almost an instant party on record, and one that's a nice change from more familiar deep funk modes – especially on some of the vocal numbers that almost seem to evoke the spirit of mod 60s London! Rhythms are tight, as are the horns – and titles include "One More Chance" and "The Snake" by The Mighty Typhoons, "Diabolik" by Skepticals, "Gigglewater" by 44 Shakedown, "Do It All Night" by Working Voodoo Club, "Seven Bullets" by The Spinshots, "Scorched" by Rosie Stevens & The Dry Riverbed Trio, and "Open Your Heart" by The Uppertones. VariousDollar Bill Y'All – Spring Records & The First Decade Of Hip Hop ... LP
Spring/BGP (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99 29.99
An instant party in a single package – a set that brings together a whole host of rare singles from back in the day – all work that's almost an equal blend of old school funk and early hip hop! The work here comes from the Spring label and related Posse imprint – a company who were around on the New York scene to issue plenty of soul and funk during the 70s – then made the move into hip hop at the end of the decade, yet in a way that also brought some of their funky currents forward! Where other labels were maybe using a lean approach and more records as the basis for cuts, Spring already had access to some great groups to back up the MCs – and the result is a batch of funky cuts that are already primed for a party crowd in the South Bronx! As the 80s move in, the cuts use more beats and electro elements – yet that older ear for funk is still nicely in place, and really keeps things moving throughout. Titles include "Money (Dollar Bill Y'All) (long version)" by Jimmy Spicer, "Charley Says (Roller Boogie Baby)" by King Tim III, "The Beach (long vocal)" by Afrika & The Zulu Kings, "Go For What You Know" by The Bally Boys, "Tearin It Up" by D4, "Rockin It" by MC Flex & The Crew, "I'm Hot" by The Rangers, "Magic's Message" by Mr Magic, "To Whoever It May Concern" by DJ Hollywood, "Cars (Zulu club mix)" by Afrika & The Zulu Kings, and "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by Fatback – a cut that some folks call the first-ever hip hop single! Ace (UK), Early 50s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 21.99
One of the most important indie labels of the postwar years – heard here in a flurry of great tracks that really show them at their finest! This excellent double-length set brings together magical moments from a time when the Flair imprint was really hitting on all burners – recording key vocal, instrumental, blues, and doo wop tracks that would go onto have a huge impact on generations to come – mixed here with a host of titles that haven't been on CD before! The package digs deeper than any look at Flair we've ever seen – and that's saying a lot, given that Ace Records was already giving the label their due a few decades before – and all the new material sits strongly next to classics that make the 50 track collection one of the best R&B collections from the 78rpm era that we've heard in a long long time. Titles include "She Wants To Rock" and "Getting High" by The Flairs, "Loosely" and "Cuban Get Away" by Ike Turner, "Chop House" by Blinky Allen, "Quit Hangin Around Me" by Saunders King, "Early In The Morning" and "Can't Stop Lovin" by Elmore James, "Hello Baby" and "Baby Beat It" by Big Duke, "Midnight Hours Journey" by Johnny Ace, "Night Howler" by Billy Gale, "You Better Hold Me" by James Reed, "I've Got The Feeling" by Baby Parham, "This Time It's Real" by Ricky & Jennell, "Send Him Back" by Shirley Gunter, "An Angel Cried" by Anna Marie, "Blue Mambo" by Bobby Rey, and "Love Me Love Me Love Me" by The Chimes. Easy Street/Demon (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... $39.99 42.99
A really great label, getting a well-deserved 40th Anniversary celebration – as Easy Street was easily one of the best things going on the New York scene of the late 80s and early 90s! The company's always been way more than just another indie imprint – much stronger than the sorts of labels who spin out quick dance hits that burn out fast – and instead a company dedicated to deeper styles of R&B, and an ongoing commitment to care and class that rivals that of most of the bigger labels of the time! Yet Easy Street never got caught up in any sort of commercial drive – which is what makes this music so great – singles that were created from the streets for the clubs – evolving strongly in styles over the years, but always on the best musical path. This special 2LP set brings together some of the key classics from Easy Street, in great versions – with titles that include "In & Out Of My Life (club mix)" by Adeva, "Go De Yaka (club mix)" by Monyaka, "Goin Through The Motions (motions mix)" by Keisha Jenkins, "Picking Up Promises (club mix)" by Jocelyn Brown, "Main Thing (club voc)" by Shot with Kim Marsh, "Share The Night (club)" by World Premiere, "Body Work (voc mix)" by Hot Streak, "Please Don't Break My Heart (radio)" by The Affair with Alyson, "Ma Foom Bey (love chant version)" by Cultural Vibe, "You Don't Know (limited edition special rmx)" by Serious Intention, "Treat Her Sweeter (dance mix)" by Paul Simpson Connection, "Happy People (knee deep's to LB dub)" by Kathy Brown, "Hideaway (deep dish rmx)" by De'Lacy, and "Baby Love" by Cassio. An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! The book is a painstakingly researched collection – and this soundtrack is just as carefully put together – with a great range of styles – heavily steeped in freaky funk, upbeat boogie, acid folk, offbeat psych, and trippy jazz! The range of sounds is really wonderful – with a feel that's somewhere between a Trunk Records or Finders Keepers compilation – and titles include "Intro (Excerpt)" by The Muzzy Band, "Spacing Out" by The Invaders, Diska Limba Man" by Medico Doktor Vibes, "Music Slave" by Jade, "White Panther" by Arcesia, "Never Come Back" by Boa, "ESP Switch" by Michael Farneti, "6.4 = Makeout" by Gary Wilson, "Just To Say Goodbye" by Russ Saul, "Cadillac Woman" by Stephen David Heitkotter, "Piledriver" by Dennis The Fox, "Old Time Feeling" by Circuit Rider, and "666" by Ray Torske. We're not sure what "equidity" means – but the grooves here are so great, we're hardly going to ask for a definition! The package is filled with plenty of the funk promised in the title – but often in ways that are really odd and offbeat – just what you'd expect from a mighty trip through the legendary P&P Records archives! Notes are a bit spare, but most tracks here appear to be from the late 70s and early 80s – mixing earlier funk modes with bits of club and old school hip hop – the latter of which makes for some of the best numbers here, cuts that really step out with a street party sort of feel. Titles include "Robot Dance" by Marvin Wright, "New York Computer Break Dance" by Stax, "Game Of Life (inst" by Lavara & E Mallison, "Gangster Rock" by Little Starsky, "Anyway I Can" by Milton Floyd, "Pound For Pound" by Le'O Roy, "Robot Dance" by Milton Wright, "Disco Hop" by Fly Guy, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "Funk Rap (inst)" by Ikim & Bacardi, "This Is The Way To Break Dance" by Super Coper & Clarence Breaker, and "Let's Do It" by Jesse Gee. Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $9.99
Storming soul groovers from Era Records – an LA label that was known for a host of different genres, but who managed to cut some marvelous Northern Soul in the mid 60s! Era's an under-tapped source for work of this nature – as evidenced by the number of previously-unreleased cuts on the collection – showing that even if you have a handful of singles on Era from the 60s, you've still got plenty more to discover! The music has a great 60s LA finish – swinging soul with a very tight approach to rhythm, and a subtle set of drama that makes most of the lyrics break out differently than more familiar soul music from back east. As always with Kent, the whole set's a joyous discovery – really well put-together, with great sound and notes – and a selection of cuts that includes "Come On Home" by Othello Robertson, "Stand There Mountain" by Vince Howard, "I Ain't Gonna Take You Back" by Brenda Holloway & The Carrolls, "You & Yours" by The Composers, "I Get A Feeling" by The Soul Mates, "My Book" by Bruce Cloud, "The Ice Man" by Billy Watkins, "Boomerange" by The Lovemates, and "I Wanna Know" by Carrol Connors. Not many groups recorded for the Gaeity Records label, but they all seem to be pretty well skilled at picking up on the best elements of 60s psyche pop and garage – all delivered here with a simple but effective groove that's almost a bridge between the LA and Chicago scenes of the mid 60s. CD features 24 tracks in all – broken into sections group by group – and titles include "World Of Dreams" and "Only In America" by The Plague, "Lies" and "Nature's Love" by Solid Reputation, "So Much In Love With You" and "My Time Is Comin" by The Checkerlads, "If You Can Dig It" and "Ode To A Cucumber, A Berry, & A Flower" by The Dewline, "Lexington Avenue" by Farmer John, "Yours Until Tomorrow" and "That's The Tune" by Flying Colours, "To Be Back Home" and "I Brought My Love With Me" by NRG/Merriday Park, and "Baby Get Out" and "Set Me Free" by Portland Street South. Impulse, 1960s/1970s. Used 4 CDs ... $14.99
A massive overview of the genius that was Impulse Records in the 60s and 70s – presented here as a 38 track collection that runs through all different modes of music at the label! The 4CD collection is a great counterpart to the book of the same name – but even if you don't pick up the book, the music alone tells a fantastic story – the evolution of jazz in from initial modern moments at the end of the 50s, through spiritual exploration and new freedoms of the 60s, to new righteous messages of the early 70s – all recorded beautifully by one of the greatest labels in the jazz business during the entire stretch! Perhaps our only complaint here is that the package leans too heavily on already-reissued material on Impulse, and doesn't really bring anything new to the table – but as an overview, it can't be beat – and features work by artists who include Charles Mingus, Albert Ayler, Paul Gonsalves, Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson, Freddie Hubbard, John Handy, Chico Hamilton, Ahmad Jamal, Chico O'Farrill, Pharoah Sanders, John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Gabor Szabo, and many more! A mighty nice little package – one that's overflowing with the special sort of Latin and soul music hybrids that rose up from the Spanish Harlem scene in the late 60s – the kind of cuts that helped establish Fania Records as one of the most important Latin labels around – and one of the grooviest too! These aren't the 70s salsa tracks that Fania spread across the globe – but the more New York-styled numbers that often had English language lyrics in the lead, sung by a soulful vocalist – and set to small combo rhythms that were overflowing with energy, and plenty of touches of jazz, soul, and funk! These are all the mixes from the rare 45rpm singles issued by Fania back in the day – and although the songs are wonderful, the collection together is even cooler as a whole – dozens of tracks, including some really rare ones – all bound up in a 7" book-styled cover, with 60 pages of notes, and a bonus funky 45! Kent/Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Fantastic west coast blues from the 60s, none of issued at the time – collected together here in a set that really shows the continuing evolution of the sound of LA! During the 60s, the city's blues took on some of the transformations that were happing in Chicago – with similar roots in a southern scene that moved into a hipper, more urban environment – where blues phrasing was more electrified, and mixed with influences from soul and jazz – often with some funky hybrids along the way! All the cuts here were recorded by Kent Records – the clear black music powerhouse of the west coast at the time – and half were issued on rare Japanese CDs in the 90s, the other 12 appear here for the first time ever – and as usual with Ace, the presentation, notes, and sound quality are wonderful. Titles include "Mama Said" and "Hey Baby" by Willie Headen, "Address In My Hand" and "Soul Blues" by Willie Garland, "Christine" and "Baby Don't Tear My Clothes" by Model T Slim, "Blues Pain" by Lowell Fulson, "You Told Me A Lie" by Smokey Wilson, "Before Day" by Big Mama Thornton, and "Rocks In My Pillow" and "Let Me Play With Your Poodle" by Long Gone Miles. Craft, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99 29.99
A very groovy look at a very groovy record label – LA powerhouse White Whale Records, home to some mighty fine sounds in the second half of the 60s! As you'd guess from the title, there's a slight current of trippiness running through this material, but it's often blended with a really strong sense of production and a nice ear for a hook – maybe a bit like A&M Records, who might be a comparison to some of the work here – as White Whale always had a careful ear for the up-and-coming, and gave them great freedom to do their thing, and the right sort of production and presentation to make everything come out groovy! And although White Whale had some hits back in the day, this material is definitely from the farther reaches of the label's singles – as you can tell from the set list, which includes "Vegetables" by The Laughing Gravy, "You Got The Love" by Professor Morrison's Lollipop, "My Door Is Always Open" by Rainy Daze, "Love Story" by The Brothers, "Superman" by The Clique, "Look At You Now" by Bazooka, "Won't You Say You'll Stay" by The Rockets, "The Proud One" by Buster Brown, "Goin It Alone" by The Bears, "Song #7" by Lyme & Cybelle, "Darlin You Can Count On Me" by The Everpresent Fullness, "Little Girl Little Boy" by The Odyssey, "I'll Be In" by The Answer, and "We Must Find A Way" by The XLs. JCR/Bible & Tire, Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 20.99
Rare gospel gems that go way past the usual – tracks recorded for the small JCR label in Memphis during the 70s, but done with a stripped-down vibe that's much more like postwar gospel overall! Most of the acts here are pretty darn obscure – groups that were inspired by the spirit and burning with a message – driven to take their amazing vocal skills to the JCR/D-Vine studios, where they got a chance to immortalize their music on wax – even if bigger national sales didn't necessarily follow! The rootsiness of this music is wonderful – usually just vocals, a lead and harmony associations, backed by an instrument or two – but also handled with much more modern soul-based phrasing than work of this sort might have had a few decades before. As with the first volume, the quality level is amazing – the kind of killer gems that make digging for more obscure gospel music so rewarding – served up in a set list of 17 tracks that include "Man On The Moon" by The Breckenridge Singers, "I Thank You Lord" by The Stars Of Faith, "Be So Glad" by The Chosen Wonders, "Until My Days Are Done" by The Masonic Travelers, "Leaning On The Lord" by The Canton Spirituals, "Save Me Jesus" by The Sons Of Harmony, "Stand By Me" by The Dixie Wonders, "Little Wooden Church" by The Silver Trumpets, and "Never Grow Old" by The Bible Tones. The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. Titles include "Hanky Panky" by The Summits, "Shy Guy" by The Charmers, "You're The Love Of My Life" by Brenda Lee Jones, "Stop Look & Listen" by The Chiffons, "He's Mine" by Linda & The Lindettes, "Your Big Mistake" by The Del-Rons, "I Still Love You" by Les Girls, "He's My Dream Boy" by Marie Antoinette, "How Can I Be Sure" by Gloria Dennis, "Circus Girl" by Bernadette Carroll, "Whenever A Teenager Cries" by The Jeans, "Nothing Went Right" by Lorrie Darnell, and "Your Life Is Gone" by Reparata. Mainstream/We Want Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
A lost side of work from 70s funk powerhouse Mainstream Records – a company best known for its jazz albums of the early 70s, but one that also cut some great soul and club material too! Most of the work here came out only as singles, and wasn't nearly as well-circulated as the albums on Mainstream – and much of it was much more underground too, from a time when funk groups were picking up the pace a bit for the new styles of dance on the scene – yet still nicely far from the more slickly produced disco that would top the charts at the end of the 70s! Most tracks appear here on vinyl for the first time since the 70s – and titles include the unissued "Disco Man (parts 1 & 2)" by Three Ounces Of Love – plus "Get Down Get Down" by South Side Coalition, "Music Is Fun To Me" by The Grand Jury, "We've Got To Get Together" by Chocolate Syrup, "Gonna Have A Good Time" by Crystal Image, "Nothing Between Us" by Electric Ladies, "Whatever's Your Sign You've Got To Be Mine" by Prophecy, "Hundred Pounds Of Pain" by Lenny Welch, and "No Rebate On Love" by The Dramatics. Wagram (France), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $31.99 34.99
A heady batch of work from the Miami scene of the 70s – all of it from the legendary TK Records family of labels, headed up by superproducer Henry Stone! Over the years, some folks have taken Henry to task for his operational strategies – but there's no denying that he's a key figure in helping the sound of the south move from the 60s into the 70s – picking up plenty of funk and sophistication along the way! The set's overflowing with classics from Stone's empire at the time – including many cuts that have been sampled or reworked heavily in recent decades – titles that include "I'm Too Tough For Mr Big Stuff" by Vicki Anderson, "Miami Funk" by The Funky Bunch, "Cramp Your Style" by All The People, "Keep It Up" by Milton Wright, "Sleep On Dream On" by Raphael Munnings, "Smokin & Drinkin" by James Brown, "Miss Hot Stuff" by Clarence Reid, "The Rub" by George & Gwen McCrae, "Funkadelic Sound" by Little Beaver, "Future Place" by Jimmy Castor, "I Like My Birdie" by Leon Phillips, "Throwdown" by The King Tutt Band, "Back From The Dead" by Bobby Byrd, "Shake N Bump (part 1)" by Snoopy Dean, and "You're The Song I've Always Wanted To Sing" by Timmy Thomas. One Der Ful/Secret Stash, Mid 60s. Used ... $13.99 16.99
One of the coolest labels on the Chicago soul scene of the 60s – part of the larger One-Der-Ful family of imprints, and equally important as the flagship company! Mar-V-Lus cut some of the hippest work in the Windy City at the time – deeply soulful singles that were really at the cusp of the scene, and which also had a fair bit of funk in the mix as well – the grittier side of Chicago soul that really represented the true sound of the underground! And although some of the Mar-V-Lus label material has been reissued over the years, this package uncovers 10 never-issued tracks, and mixes them with 15 more gems that only ever came out as rare indie singles – making for over two dozen Chicago soul treasures, packaged here with a very detailed set of notes. The package is another great step in this six-volume series – and completely essential listening, even to long-trained Chicago soul ears like ours! Unreleased tracks include "For You My Love" by Josephine Taylor, "Sad Souvenirs" by The Ulti-mations, "I Feel Good All Over" by Baby Miracles, "I Want A Man" by Josephine Taylor, "If You Need Me" by The Du-Ettes, "Sweatin" by Alvin Cash, "Stop Call The Cop" by The Du-Ettes, and "Your Love Picks Me Up" by Josephine Taylor – and other titles include "Love Is A Good Thing Goin" by The Blenders, "Don't Turn Your Back On Me" by Johnny Sayles, "I Still Can't Get You" by Joseph Moore, "Joey" by The Young Folk, "Philly Freeze" by Alvin Cash, "You're Gonna Be Sorry" by Cicero Blake, "Would I Do It Over" by The Ulti-mations, "Lonely Girl" by Miss Madeline, and "Whole Lot Of Lovin" by Johnny Sayles. VariousOne-Der-Ful Collection – One-Der-Ful Records ... CD
One Der Ful/Secret Stash, Late 60s. Used ... $13.99 16.99
An unassuming cover, but a set that's got a really colorful batch of rare Chicago soul – including a number of never-issued tracks from the legendary One-Der-Ful Records! The label was one of the true indie greats in Chicago back in the 60s – almost as much a force for local soul as bigger imprints like Chess, Okeh, and Brunswick – and home to an equally great array of artists – including a few who'd later hit big on different labels! The work here is all the handiwork of the Leaner brothers, who not only recorded most of the cuts here – but also helped distribute One-Der-Ful and a host of other midwestern indies – which really gave them a great ear for the best sounds coming from the underground, and the new trends that were breaking big way before the rest of the country picked them up. And although there have been other collections of One-Der-Ful material before, this one may well be the most thoughtful – from the detailed notes on the label and each artist, to the research that uncovered never-issued tracks that include "Happy Times" by Beverly Shaffer, "Enjoy Yourself" by The Five Du-Tones, "I'm Guilty" by Liz Lands, "Thank You Love" by Otis Clay, "Now That You're Gone" by McKinley Mitchell, "Meet Me Halfway" by Beverly Shaffer, "Take Me To Your Leader" by The Sharpees, "When You Get That Feeling" by The Five Du-Tones, "Got To Find A Way (alt)" by Otis Clay, "Seventh Hour" by Liz Lands, and "Here Comes My Baby" by Mary Silvers. The set features lots more great cuts too – including "Who Is She" by Lucky Laws, "The Prettiest Girl" by Joe & Mack, "The Sock" by The Sharpees, "All For You" by the Admirations, and "The Man Of The Town" by Jay Jordan. Cherry Red (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $32.99 50.99
An early 80s set from Cherry Red Records, and one that shows just how important the British label was to the world of post-punk music at the time – as you'll hear from an assortment of tracks that's more than enough to give labels like Factory or Rough Trade a run for their money! Cherry Red always had a way of thinking outside of the norm – mixing experimental sounds with more tuneful moments, and sometimes showcasing artists who weren't afraid to put their feelings on the line – at a level that other British indies would pick up more strongly a few years later. There's plenty of formative sounds here – and titles include "Plain Sailing" by Tracy Thorn, "My Face Is On Fire" by Felt, "No Noise" by Eyeless In Gaza, "Don't Blink" by The Nightingales, "Some Things Don't Matter" by Ben Watt, "Modi 2 (extract)" by Piero Milesi, "All About You" by Thomas Leer, "Portrait" by Five Or Six, "Eine Symphonie Des Grauens" by The Monochrome Set, "Lazy Ways" by The Marine Girls, "I Unseen" by The Misunderstood, and "On My Mind" by Everything But The Girl. This massive 3CD version of the collection is overflowing with great material – a whopping 72 tracks in all, 17 of which are unreleased, presented in a book-style package with plenty of notes! Added material includes work from The Nightingales, Kevin Coyne, The Passage, Monochrome Set, Jane, Five Or Six, Thomas Leer, Martyn Bates, Creation Rebel, The Reflections, Swallow Tongue, Bodhi Beat Poets, and even Patrick MacNee & Honor Blackman of The Avengers! VariousSoul Love Now – The Black Fire Records Story 1975 to 1993 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
A great look at one of our favorite record labels of all time – a company that was one of the first we ever worked together with, back when we started Dusty Groove – and whose music has been a huge inspiration to us for decades! Black Fire is a really special record label from the DC area – not just a jazz imprint, but more of an artistic collective – maybe similar to what Tribe Records was to the Detroit scene of the 70s, but also more open to more soulful sounds too – which is what really makes so many of these tracks so great – as they have a perfect balance between jazz, funk, and soul – kind of that through-line that the Chicago scene had as things moved from Sun Ra, to Phil Cohran, on to the Pharoahs and Earth Wind & Fire! That trajectory is key here – as many of the players were rooted in more avant jazz styles, but were also eager to communicate their message in ways that were more universal – which is why the music here has such lasting appeal over the years – as it's filled with messages of love and peace, life and pride – with an intensity that maybe makes these tracks every bit as important now as when they were first recorded. The best-known group on the set is Oneness Of Juju, but there's work from the whole spectrum of Black Fire artists – tracks that include "Look At The People" by Wayne Davis, "Doin The Carvin For Thabo" by Lon Moshe, "African Rhythms (live 1975)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" by Theatre West, "People" by Experience Unlimited, "Follow Me" by Okyerema Asante, "Third House" by Southern Energy Ensemble, and "Drummers From Ibadan" by Byard Lancaster. Designer/Big Legal Mess, 1960s. New Copy 4 CDs ... $11.99 39.98
A tremendous legacy in gospel music during the 60s – a crucially important indie from the Memphis scene – and one who recorded really great groups from around the country! Designer were helping shape the sound of modern gospel at the same time as Chess, Savoy, and some of the bigger labels – and doing their work with a similar ear towards some of the more soulful sounds of the secular world – particularly in the way the harmonies and sound of group vocals came together! And despite their name – designer – which might make you think in terms of throwaway fashion – the label has a really classic sound and a rock-solid approach, which makes this overstuffed 4CD set a treasure trove for anyone interested in these key years in gospel music. The set features 101 tracks, in a very cool LP-sized sleeve, complete with an oversized booklet filled with notes and photos – and the collection features work by Foster Brothers, Gospel Songbirds, Twilight Singers, Melody Kings Of Greenwood MS, The Jubilee Hummingbirds, Jackson Trumpeteers, Little Willie Patterson & The Famous South Land Singers, The Shaw Singers, Sister Carrie Daniel, and many many more! Impulse/Jazzman (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 20.99
An essential look at the spiritual jazz legacy of Impulse Records – a set that's maybe a bit overdue in this series, given that Impulse first opened the door to these modes with their recordings of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in the 60s! For some reason, Impulse had a perfect ear for this music – able to let players stretch out and be free, but also work some of the earlier modal jazz impulses into longer-form tunes that still had a pulse of rhythm – and which were often a bit different than the freer jazz styles on a label like ESP. Make no mistake, there's plenty of improvisation going on here – but it's also part of the larger, unified spirit of the tunes – a real message in the music, on selections that include "Sister Mamie" by Yusef Lateef, "Three Flowers" by McCoy Tyner, "7th Day" by Freddie Hubbard, "Half & Half" by Elvin Jones, "Groove Waltz" by McCoy Tyner, "The Blessing Song" by Michael White, "Turiya & Ramakrishna" by Alice Coltrane, "A Taste Of Honey" by Phil Woods, "Constant Trob (part 1)" by John Klemmer, "Hum Allah Hum Allah Hum Allah" by Pharoah Sanders, "Maimoun" by Marion Brown, "Lonesome Lover" by Max Roach, "Fantszm" by Elvin Jones, "Acknowledgement" by John Coltrane, "Thembi" by Pharoah Sanders, and "Journey In Satchidananda" by Alice Coltrane. And let us say that even if you have some of these tracks on other records, there's something completely sublime about the way the whole thing is put together – and the way the tracks sound next to each other! A deep dive into the work of a wonderful record label – the Strata imprint from Detroit at the start of the 70s – a company who served up some very spiritual sounds in the short time they were issuing records! Don't confuse Strata with Strata East – although the labels do have some similarity – as Strata also brought in a bit more electricity on some of its cuts, and some slight touches of funk as well – a very special brew in which the Detroit jazz underground of the time were mixing things up in so many different ways – really given a lot of freedom to explore styles that are still ahead of their time all these many years later! Key albums on Strata have been reissued in recent years, but the set also features some overlooked gems by more obscure artists too – titles that include "Maiden Voyage" by Ursula Walker, "Salsa (part 1)" by Fito Foster, "Time Is Wasting" by TJ, "Joy Road" by Lyman Woodard Organization, "All But Blind" by Mixed Bag, "Island Song" by Kenny Cox, "Face At My Window" by Sam Sanders, "People We Got To Do Better" by The Soulmates, "You're The One" by TJ, "Noh Word" by Contemporary Jazz Quintet, "Tune For LN" by Larry Nozero, "Where Is The Place" by Maulawi, "Saturday Night Special" by Lyman Woodard, and "Beyond The Dream" by Kenny Cox. A mighty deep look at one of the hippest labels on the rockabilly scene – and one that was quite a surprise, too – given that Dot Records not only served up a fair bit of instrumental pop, but also recorded some of the "fake" rockers of the time as well! Yet all the work here is the real deal – tracks from the farther reaches of the Dot catalog, and related Hamilton imprint – work that was only ever issued as 7" singles, and quickly lost in the shuffle – only to be rediscovered in later generations by the kind of cats who were always digging for the coolest, rawest tracks from back in the day! As with other volumes in this groundbreaking series, the package presents a heck of a lot of music with very detailed notes – 37 titles that include "When The Sin Stops" by The Nighthawks, "Bad Boy" by robin Luke, "Honky Tonk Song" by Leroy Van Dyke, "Cool It Baby" by Dick Lory, "Mail Train" by Billy Joe Tucker, "My Babe" by Ronnie Smith, "Nancy Lynne" by Dick D'Agostin & the Swingers, "Love Charms" by Sanford Clark, "Jeopardy" by Ned Costner, "Whatcha Gonna Do" by Earl Henry, "I'm Hypnotized" by Don Johnson, and "Steelworker Blues" by Keith Courvale. A wonderfully wide-ranging look at the more unique aspects of Japanese jazz from the 60s onward – a set that mixes together spiritual tracks, bossa nova, and some surprisingly soulful tracks too – all from records that were only ever issued in Japan! If you've heard the great first volume, you'll know what to expect here – but we can also say that the scope of work here might even be better, and there's some great surprises along the way – especially on cuts that show the way these Japanese jazz musicians have taken some inspiration from American music, then really run far in their own new directions with the work. A stunning overview of work from the small D-Vine Spirituals label in Memphis – a really homegrown imprint who were as important to the sound of the city's spiritual music as Stax Records was to soul in the 60s! In fact, the vibe here is often more 60s than 70s – maybe a testament to the finances of D-Vine when it came to recording this music – but also an indication of the way the company was able to go to the roots of what makes these tracks great – which is usually just a great lead voice or tight harmonies, and an important message in the music! Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. Liveright, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hefty book on the great Otis Redding – one of the best soul singers of all time, even though he left this planet all too soon! Redding's career on record was less than a decade long, but marked by a huge amount of work – not just time in the studio, with the legendary Stax Records – but also countless hours on the road, where Otis honed his talents and perfected his craft – while additionally putting both himself and his talents at risk. Author Mark Ribowsky looks at these years in wonderful depth – mostly with a focus on Redding, but also a strong look at Stax as well – as the partnership between the two was one of the most important in soul music at the time, and continues to have an impact all these many years later. Book is 366 pages, with copious notes at the end – hardcover, and with some black and white images. Book

✨✧ Various122 BPM – The Birth Of House Music – Mitchbal Records & Chicago Connection Records ... CD
Still Music, 1980s. Used 3 CD's ... Out Of Stock
A crucial look at the Chicago scene in the 1980s – and the first collection to really get at the roots of that city's legendary house music scene! Although later labels – like Trax or DJ International – became known as global forces for dance music in the 80s, the big wave of new sounds from the Windy City was really started by a much smaller company – the tiny Mitchbal label, and related Chicago Connection Records! This wonderful package really does a great job of bringing the Mitchbal contribution to light – with lavish notes, almost Numero-style, that fully detail the way the label mixed unique strands on the scene – British imports, new wave rhythms, and a younger generation of soul musicians still looking for an outlet in the post-disco years. These forces, and more, all came together to make the mighty sound of Mitchbal – featured here in a collection of the label's rare singles, some unreleased tracks, and other essential bits. 3CD package features a full bonus mix CD, plus a whopping 24 tracks that include "Fantasy (inst)" by Z Factor, "Shake Your Body" by Jeanette Thomas, "When I Hear The Music" by Mitchbal & The Housemasters, "The House Is On Fire" by Dezz & Grant, "Do Dat Stuff (dance mix)" by Mitchbal & Larry Williams, "I Am Music (inst)" by Libra Libra, "That's The Beat" by Risque Rhythm Team, "Fast Cars" by Z Factor, "More Than Just A Dance (backyard mix)" by Rique Rhythm Team, "I Got Broke Breakdancing (inst)" by MC Ghee, and "I Can't Forget" by Mr Lee. ✨✧ VariousAce Story Vol 4 – Another Chapter In The Ace Records Mississippi Story (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not just another chapter – but a set that's great enough to stand on its own – a massive amount of southern rock, soul, and rockin' soul from the legendary Ace Records – the Mississippi imprint that gave the UK reissue their famous name – paid tribute to by the latter in this overstuffed compilation of goodies! The set's a great illustration of the way that boundaries were often blurred in the southern scene of the late 50s and early 60s – a nearly color blind way of putting together records that partially came from the shared production settings, studio players, and songwriters too. Titles include "Yum Yum Yum" by Joe Tex, "Walk On" by Alvin Red Tyler, "Tee Na Na" by Dicky Williams, "Teen Age Wedding" by Johnny Angel, "Scald Dog" by Huey Smith, "Happy Sax" by Alvin Red Tyler, "Charlie Brown Got Expelled" by Joe Tex, "I Wanna Know Why" by Roland Cook, "Wherever You May Be" by Joe & Ann, "I'll Keep On Trying" by Eddie Bo, and "Walking With Frankie" by Frankie Lee Sims. The set brings together a few unreleased tracks alongside Ace singles and other obscurities – a rich testament to the strength of the label back in the day – and their great ear for sounds from surrounding scenes as well – as the music here has plenty of echoes of Memphis and New Orleans too! ✨✧ VariousBeatlemaniacs!!! – The World Of Beatles Novelty Records ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fascinating sub-chapter in 60s pop music – served up in a wealth of Beatles-related records from a variety of artists – Beatles tributes, Beatles parodies, and some especially great tunes that just plain make fun of the group! Much of the work here is pitched from the mainstream of rock and roll at the time – and seems to echo frustrations felt in the shadow of the Fab Four – not just those of competing musicians, but also spurned boyfriends who found their girls swooning heavily over the group! Tracks are done in a variety of different modes – some Beatles-esque, some country, some straight pop, and some in more mainstream American rock and roll – often with very funny lyrics, and at least a few great attempts at Beatles impersonations. The whole thing's very nicely in the style of some of Ace's other explorations into novelty records of the 60s – and like those other packages, the notes here are astonishingly complete – with a wealth of details on all the tunes, when the music itself already would have been enough! Titles include "What's Wrong With Ringo" by The Bon Bons, "Saint Paul" by Terry Knight, "Beatles Please Come Back" by Gigi Parker & The Lonelies, "John Paul George & Ringo" by The Bulldogs, "Beatle Crazy" by Bill Clifton, "A Beatle I Want To Be" by Sonny Curtis, "My Beatle Haircut" by The Twiliters, "John You Went Too Far This Time" by Rainbo, "Stamp Out The Beatles" by The Hi-Riders, and "A Letter To The Beatles" by The Four Preps. ✨✧ VariousDollar Bill Y'All – Spring Records & The First Decade Of Hip Hop ... CD
Spring/BGP (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ VariousHere Comes The Hurt – Soul Ballads From King Records ... CD
King/Kent (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heartbreaking soul from King Records – a really great side of the label's output – but one that hardly ever gets its due, given the King reputation for blues and funk! The work here is wonderful, though – every bit on a par with the best ballad soul and tear-swept tunes from the east coast indie scene of the 60s – served up with lots of slow-moving instrumentation, deep harmony vocals, and production that really seems to increase the melancholy of the music! A few names here are ones you'd not normally associate with the style, and others are great discoveries from the rich catalog of King Records – a much-needed package that's filled with rare gems! Titles include "Have No Fear" by Ricky Lyons, "Why" by James Duncan, "I Need You" by The Snapshots, "Tell the Whole World" by June Sims, "Too Much For Me To Bear" by Barbara Burton & The Messengers, "Here Comes The Hurt" by Hank Ballard, "Buddy Boy" by Charles Spurling, "Your Love Was Good For Me" by Marva Whitney, "Fran" by Thomas Bailey, "My Pillow Stays Wet" by James Duncan & The Duncan Trio, "My New Love" by Lynn Davis, and "A City Called Loneliville" by Dee Dee, Joseph, & David.
