KokoKoko ... LP
Fortuna (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 35.99
A nice hybrid of Mediterranean grooves from Koko – an artist born in Morocco, working in Jerusalem during the 70s, and open to a fair bit of elements from Greece as well! The record's got some elements of some of the funkier Mid-East work of the time, including tight rhythms and nicely inflected vocals – but there's also some standout jazzier elements too – such as a snakey reed solo on one track, spooky organ lines on a few more, and lots of cool electric guitar, tuned with almost a surf-like sort of vibe! The whole album is great – never a dull moment, and filled with the kinds of grooves that would play nicely next to some of your Arabesk rock from the same time – on titles that include "Katigori", "Barba Costa", "Chily Chily", "Grama Graphtos", "Allopia", "Philame", and "Echo Capsses". Andy BeyBallads Blues & Bey ... LP
Evidence/Koko (UK), 1995. New Copy 2LP ... $32.99
Warm and wonderful late work from the great Andy Bey – former member of Andy & The Bey Sisters, and a singer who will forever be in our heart for his hip 70s recordings with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! This one has Bey running through a host of straighter jazz tracks – mostly Ellington numbers and standards, done in a warm intimate style that's quite a departure from his 70s work, more in the mode of his spiritual vocals of the 60s. Tracks are all done in longer versions than usual, which really lets Bey open up – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Day Dream", "If You Could See Me Now", "Willow Weep For Me", "In A Sentimental Mood", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". ✨✧ David Murray QuartetBallads For Bass Clarinet ... LP
DIW/Koko (UK), 1991. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest jazz voices on the bass clarinet – save perhaps for the late Eric Dolphy – working here in a wonderful batch of ballads and gentle groovers! The set's quite different from the usual jazz date to bear "ballads" in the title – as David Murray's not ruminating over standards with too much strings – and instead still works in a hip small combo mode that's filled with swing and soul. In fact, most tunes are hardly ballads in the traditional style – and just showcase a slightly gentler, more personal side of Murray's music – but one that still has plenty of darkness around the edges. The group's a quartet – with John Hicks on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums – and tunes include "Portrait Of A Black Woman", "Waltz To Heaven", "Elegy For Fannie Lou", "Lyons Street", "Chazz", and "New Life". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration (4LP set) ... LP
PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. New Copy 4LP ... $54.99 69.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Hi Five (Germany), 2011. Used ... $1.99
A great German combo, and one with almost as much jazz as funk in the mix – quite a nice change from the usual group of this nature! There's a warm glow to the record right from the start – a vibe that comes from the tight trumpet lines of Michael Voss, who also sings a bit – and even more so from the vocals of Koko Kay, who sings on some of the best tracks – and gives things a slow-burning sound that's mighty nice. The style's kind of a blend of deep funk with jazzier overtones – and titles include "Life Shines", "Hifivin Time", "Awesome Change", "It Ain't That Bad", "The Heritage", and "Global Tribe". CD

A classic set from this legendary Detroit festival – a mighty assemblage of roots and jazz performers that was put together by John Sinclair! Most of the material here is blues – but the set features a key track from Sun Ra & His Solar Myth Arkestra – a performance of "Live Is Splendid" from the Space Is The Place Suite. Other tracks include "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" by Dr John, "Road Runner" by Jr Walker, "Wang Dang Doodle" by Koko Taylor, "Gambler's Blues" by Otis Rush, "Ain't That Loving You" by Bobby Blue Bland, "Honey Bee" by Muddy Waters, "Form Kinetic" by CJQ, "Dust My Broom" by Johnny Shines, and "Goin Down" by Freddie King. ✨✧ Willie MabonShake That Thing ... CD
Black & Blue/Ultra Vybe (France), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great date from this legendary Chicago musician – an artist who recorded in the early days for Chess Records, then seemed to find his most welcome recording home overseas on albums like this! The material is from a 1973 session in France, but has all the grit and growl of a Chicago recording – with Willie on vocals, piano, and a bit of harmonica – and some sweet electric lines on guitar from the team of Louis Myers on lead, and Jimmy Rogers on rhythm – alongside Dave Myers on bass and Fred Below on drums. There's almost a slight current of funk at times, which Willie emphasizes with his piano in a great way – and titles include "Got To Have Some", "Shake That Thing", "Poison Ivy", "I'm Mad", "Lover Girl", "I Enjoyed Myself In Pau", "Hungry", and "Hey Girl". CD features a number of unissued tracks – including a few recorded at the same time in The Netherlands with guest vocals on one track by Koko Taylor! CD

Savoy, Late 40s. Near Mint- 5LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
You'll be hard pressed to find a better collection of Charlie Parker's classic work on vinyl! Bird's great recordings for Savoy have often been poorly packaged over the years, but here you get the whole batch of seminal bop sides by the pioneering artist of the genre! Bird's the leader on most of these sides, but there's a nice set of recordings under Tiny Grimes and a very young Miles Davis too, with a host of players from the dawn of the bebop age, including Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Sadik Hakim, John Lewis, Duke Jordan, Curly Russell, Tommy Potter and Max Roach. An as you'd expect from this kind of set, you get loads of multiple takes so you can hear these pioneering players creating the style that would change the face of jazz forever. Put together in 1978, this set features 66 tracks in all, spread out over 5 LPs, with a nicely annotated book, and includes "I'll Always Love You Just The Same","Romance Without Finance", "Billie's Bounce", "Now's The Time", "Thriving On A Riff", "Koko", "Donna Lee", "Chasin The Bird", "Buzzy", "Milestones", "Half Nelson", "Another Hair Do", "Bird Gets The Worm", "Barbados", "Ah-Leu-Cha", "Constellation", "Parker's Mood", "Perhaps","Marmaduke", "Steeplechase" and more! Eugen CiceroRokoko-Jazz ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... About July 30, 2021
One of the greatest jazz-meets-classical albums from pianist Eugen Cicero – thanks to a good amount of Rokoko in the grooves! The more flowery, flourishing style of the Rokoko era proves to be a perfect foil for Cicero's incredible approach to the keys – one that lets him bring even more complicated touches to the piano, while still working with tightly jazzy rhythms from the team of Peter Witte on bass and Charlie Antolini on drums! Witte and Antolini are great throughout – keeping things tight and focused, and making the record way more than a virtuostic exploration of classical themes. As much a jazz record as the best Swingle Singers sides from the 60s – with titles that include a great original called "Bach's Softly Sunrise", plus Bach's "Solfeggio C Moll", Couperin's "L'Adoslecente", and Scarlatti's "Sonate C-Dur". A holy grail of 70s African Funk – and not just for the unusual look of the cover! The set's a really unique one – almost rootsier than most of the better-known Ghanian grooves of the time, but funkier too – with a brilliant blend of raw percussion, quirky basslines, and some smoking horn parts that are a lot more American soul and funk than the usual 70s African groove! The whole thing's stunning all the way through – a record that totally informs an understanding of its generation, yet in ways that no other record can touch. Wonderful all the way through, with not a bit of filler – and all cuts are right on the money for any fan of African funk! London is exploding again with fantastic music – and this time around, it's the city's jazz underground that comes forward to remind us what a unique musical crossroads the city can be! The work here represents an incredible new scene that's pushing boundaries all over again – not the avant jazz of London improvisers, nor the electric sounds of the broken beat world, or retro funk of another scene – but fantastic acoustic jazz that at one level brings back deeper spiritual sounds from generations back, but at another flings forward its sounds with inspiration that will be setting the standard for years to come. We've only had a few of these artists on record before, and together they work beautifully as a strong new proclamation of talent – on titles that include "Once" by Nubya Garcia, "Inside The Acorn" by Maisha, "Pure Shade" by Ezra Collective, "The Balance" by Moses Boyd, "Brockley" by Theon Cross, "Walls" by Triforce, "Black Skin Black Masks" by Shabaka Hutchings, "Go See" by Joe Armon Jones, and "Abusey Junction" by Kokoroko. An excellent – and obscure – session of female vocals from the 50s! Singer Honi Gordon was part of a harmony group, The Gordons, who sung with Charles Mingus briefly in the 50s – and that modernist tradition is kept strongly in this, her one solo LP. The record's got some extremely strong accompaniment, in a Mingus-esque vein, by Jaki Byard and Ken McIntyre – and although Honi's style is sultry, it's also got a dark edge that really makes the album stand out from other vocal sessions of the time. Tracks include "Strollin'", "My Kokomo", "Cupid", and "Walkin' (Out the Door)". CD

A beautiful album that perfectly mixes both sides of Aretha Franklin's talents – the hard-edged soul singer who first flourished at Atlantic records in the late 60s, and the artist who was growing even more as a vocalist – really reaching out her wings to more sophisticated material! There's a balance here that makes the record one of the deepest that Franklin ever recorded for Atlantic – lots of larger Arif Mardin touches, but also some raw moments that really round things out – on titles that include Aretha's classic take on the Weldon Irvine/Nina Simone tune "Young Gifted & Black", the funky classic "Rock Steady", the wonderful mellow groover "Day Dreaming", the hit "Brand New Me", and the strangely compelling "First Snow In Kokomo" – plus other titles that include "All The King's Horses", "Oh Me Oh My", "Border Song", "Didn't I Blow Your Mind", "April Fools", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "The Long & Winding Road". Very underground work from the late 70s and early 80s – a selection of tracks that are mostly new to our ear, and which definitely move along the clubbier side of the West African spectrum! A number of these tunes have core elements that resonate with American disco of the time – but with vocals, instrumentation, and rhythms that also echo the tightening up of Afro Funk in Lagos and other scenes as the 70s came to a close.
