KokoKoko ... LP
Fortuna (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A nice hybrid of Mediterranean grooves from Koko – an artist born in Morocco, working in Jerusalem during the 70s, and open to a fair bit of elements from Greece as well! The record's got some elements of some of the funkier Mid-East work of the time, including tight rhythms and nicely inflected vocals – but there's also some standout jazzier elements too – such as a snakey reed solo on one track, spooky organ lines on a few more, and lots of cool electric guitar, tuned with almost a surf-like sort of vibe! The whole album is great – never a dull moment, and filled with the kinds of grooves that would play nicely next to some of your Arabesk rock from the same time – on titles that include "Katigori", "Barba Costa", "Chily Chily", "Grama Graphtos", "Allopia", "Philame", and "Echo Capsses". Andy BeyBallads Blues & Bey ... LP
Evidence/Koko (UK), 1995. New Copy 2LP ... $32.99
Warm and wonderful late work from the great Andy Bey – former member of Andy & The Bey Sisters, and a singer who will forever be in our heart for his hip 70s recordings with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! This one has Bey running through a host of straighter jazz tracks – mostly Ellington numbers and standards, done in a warm intimate style that's quite a departure from his 70s work, more in the mode of his spiritual vocals of the 60s. Tracks are all done in longer versions than usual, which really lets Bey open up – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Day Dream", "If You Could See Me Now", "Willow Weep For Me", "In A Sentimental Mood", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". ✨✧ David Murray QuartetBallads For Bass Clarinet ... LP
DIW/Koko (UK), 1991. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest jazz voices on the bass clarinet – save perhaps for the late Eric Dolphy – working here in a wonderful batch of ballads and gentle groovers! The set's quite different from the usual jazz date to bear "ballads" in the title – as David Murray's not ruminating over standards with too much strings – and instead still works in a hip small combo mode that's filled with swing and soul. In fact, most tunes are hardly ballads in the traditional style – and just showcase a slightly gentler, more personal side of Murray's music – but one that still has plenty of darkness around the edges. The group's a quartet – with John Hicks on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums – and tunes include "Portrait Of A Black Woman", "Waltz To Heaven", "Elegy For Fannie Lou", "Lyons Street", "Chazz", and "New Life". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.98
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". BuariDisco Soccer ... CD
Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". The Leaving This Planet EP is centered around a sweet cover of the Charles Earland classic – featuring beautiful soul vocals by Sharlene Hector – and Mark also covers Gene Harris's "Koko + Lee Roe" for another gem with a jazzy soul vibe. Other tracks include the Afrobeat and dancefloor hybrids "Dreams" and "Love Broke", both featuring Bembe Segue, plus "What It Is", "Eight", "Freesoul Interlude (Live)", "The Calling" feat Olatunde and "Hope" feat Rahel. A great German combo, and one with almost as much jazz as funk in the mix – quite a nice change from the usual group of this nature! There's a warm glow to the record right from the start – a vibe that comes from the tight trumpet lines of Michael Voss, who also sings a bit – and even more so from the vocals of Koko Kay, who sings on some of the best tracks – and gives things a slow-burning sound that's mighty nice. The style's kind of a blend of deep funk with jazzier overtones – and titles include "Life Shines", "Hifivin Time", "Awesome Change", "It Ain't That Bad", "The Heritage", and "Global Tribe". CD

A deeper set of grooves than usual from Tabu Records – not just the label's hits or disco singles, but a well-chosen batch of tracks that fits nicely with the other collections in the Free Soul series! Most numbers here are mellow or midtempo – and they step around with a mix of modern soul and 80s groove styles, often with some really sweet touches on the instrumentation that come as a nice surprise. Tabu was definitely one of the classiest soul labels of its generation, and that really comes through here – in a sweet batch of 18 tracks that includes "Just Be Good To Me" by SOS Band, "Changin" by Sharon Ridley, "Destiny" by Woods Empire, "Waiting For Someone" by Brainstorm, "Koko & Leeroe" by Manfredo Fest, "Look At Us Now" by Alexander O'Neal, "For Lovers Only" by General Caine, "Brand New Day" by Brainstorm, "Tell Me If You Still Care" by SOS Band, "Saturday Love" by Cherrelle, and "Anything For You" by Anacostia. A very cool trip through the world of 80s hip hop – particularly the hippest tracks from labels that include Fresh, Sleeping Bag, Warlock, B-Boy, and Idlers Records – all laid out here in a non-stop mix that's almost 70 minutes long! The bold voice of a new Afro Funk ensemble – jamming hard with an intensity that matches recent work by Antibalas or The Daktaris, and which stands proudly in a tradition that runs back to Fela's best work of the 70s! The group's extremely tight, and have a good funky edge – and they've actually got a lot of jazz in their playing, especially on the sax solos, which are particularly strong. Plus, the whole thing was engineered by Gabe Roth of Daptone, so it's got a no-nonsense, all-classic sound that makes the whole thing immediately enjoyable! 6 long jammers – including "Fuss & Fight", "Donkey", "Good Noose Bad Noose", "Talk - Action = Zero", and "Watching You". Yazoo, Mid 30s. Used ... $9.99
A great document of an amazing blues tradition – bottleneck guitar, offered up here in a host of original 78s from the 30s! The style is one that was co-opted often in later years, but is presented here at its roots – with a nice, gritty feel overall – and use of the mode that's still pretty darn fresh, and free of cliche. Side one features tracks by Casey Bill Weldon – including "Hitch Me To Your Buggy", "Back Door Blues", "Lady Doctor Blues", "The Big Boat", and "Go Ahead Buddy" – and side two features cuts by Kokomo Arnold, including "Salty Dog", "Feels So Good", "Busy Bootin", "The Twelves", and "I'll Be Up Someday". Honi GordonHoni Gordon Sings ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1962. Used ... $9.99
An excellent – and obscure – session of female vocals from the 50s! Singer Honi Gordon was part of a harmony group, The Gordons, who sung with Charles Mingus briefly in the 50s – and that modernist tradition is kept strongly in this, her one solo LP. The record's got some extremely strong accompaniment, in a Mingus-esque vein, by Jaki Byard and Ken McIntyre – and although Honi's style is sultry, it's also got a dark edge that really makes the album stand out from other vocal sessions of the time. Tracks include "Strollin'", "My Kokomo", "Cupid", and "Walkin' (Out the Door)". CD

The last album of the 70s by Little Feat – and it's a strange one! On one hand, Little Feat is revisiting some of their country rock and New Orleans-inspired songs of years past – as well as the self-conciously oddball humor. But they're also working in a tighter, leaner and cleaner studio sound than on the previous albums. Mississippi Fred McDowellI Do Not Play No Rock N Roll (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Fuel 2000, 1970. Used ... $14.99
An incredible record from Mississippi Fred McDowell – a set that was issued on a big label, but which has a wonderfully rootsy feel throughout – in a way that almost out-does any work from the indie blues labels of the time! The package was put together by Tommy Couch as an early Malaco production – but it's even more stripped-down than later blues work from those studios – as it features mostly just Fred on vocals and guitar, introducing himself and his music – then working through these incredible inflections on electric guitar, which are as far from the rockish sound of all the crossover blues that McDowell promises he won't provide in the title! Really timeless stuff, brilliantly recorded – with cuts that include "Red Cross Store", "61 Highway", "Jesus Is On The Mainline", "Kokomo Me Baby", and "Good Morning Little School Girl". CD

John RenbournFaro Annie ... LP
Reprise, 1972. Near Mint- ... $39.99
An album of understated brilliance from the great John Renbourn – a set that mostly just features John on vocals and guitar, working through tunes of a traditional nature – yet delivering a record that's full of tremendously powerful moments! There's none of the hoke here that you might have gotten from a folk revival record from a decade before – and instead, Renbourn's bringing all the amazing new discoveries he and his contemporaries have unlocked in the acoustic guitar, as a way of opening up some of the darker corners and spookier elements of the tunes – none of which should be that strong on their own, but which work together here beautifully. Renbourn gets a bit of help from time to time – vocals from Dorris Henderson, harmonica from Pete Dyer, and drums from Terry Cox – but most of the set is just vocals and guitar, even more timeless in 1971 than it might have been before John plays a bit of sitar and harmonica, too – and titles include "Kokomo Blues", "Little Sadie", "Shake Shake Mama", 'The Cuckoo","Willy O Winsbury", "Faro Annie", and "Come On In My Kitchen".
