Koko TaylorKoko Taylor ... LP
Chess, 1969. Near Mint- ... $69.99
Probably THE album you truly need to own from Koko Taylor – and a completely great one, recorded way before she'd become a cliched fixture paying the bills on the frat boy tourist blues scene! The tracks here were recorded over a few years in mid-to-late 60s Chicago – mostly with production from Willie Dixon, who also co-wrote most of the tunes on the set! The groove is nice and gritty – electric Chess Chicago blues at it's finest, but also with a good sense of soul in the mix – and tracks include the fiery hit "Wang Dang Doodle", plus "Fire", "29 Ways", "I Don't Care Who Knows", "Nitty Gritty", and "Love You Like A Woman". Amazing stuff! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original blue label pressing, in beautiful shape! Cover has just a hint of aging on one edge, but the whole thing is great overall.)

Luther IngramI Don't Want To Be Right – The KoKo Singles Vol 2 ... CD
Koko/Kent (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 18.99
A sublime second chapter in the career of Memphis soul singer Luther Ingram – one of the greatest talents of his generation, represented here by some of his best work ever! Ingram first got his start doing rougher, more fragile soul tunes – but by the time of these 70s recordings, he'd really found his voice – and hit a more confident, more sensuous style that could easily go head to head with Al Green or any of his southern soul contemporaries. There's a key Stax connection to most of the material here, but the sound's a bit different too – thanks to the production efforts of Koko label head Johnny Baylor, who gives Ingram a sound that's nicely apart from the pack. The booklet features a really in-depth look at the music – 14 pages of track-by-track notes on the tunes – and the CD features 19 singles recorded over most of the mid 70s. Titles include "Missing You", "Puttin Game Down", "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right", "Always", "Help Me Love", "Love Ain't Gonna Run Me Away", "Ain't Good For Nothing", "These Are The Things", "Let's Steal Away To The Hideaway", "I Like The Feeling", "I'm Gonna Be The Best Thing", "Do You Love Somebody", "Get To Me", "How I Miss My Baby", and "You Were Made For Me". ✨✧ David Murray QuartetBallads For Bass Clarinet ... LP
DIW/Koko (UK), 1991. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99
One of the greatest jazz voices on the bass clarinet – save perhaps for the late Eric Dolphy – working here in a wonderful batch of ballads and gentle groovers! The set's quite different from the usual jazz date to bear "ballads" in the title – as David Murray's not ruminating over standards with too much strings – and instead still works in a hip small combo mode that's filled with swing and soul. In fact, most tunes are hardly ballads in the traditional style – and just showcase a slightly gentler, more personal side of Murray's music – but one that still has plenty of darkness around the edges. The group's a quartet – with John Hicks on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums – and tunes include "Portrait Of A Black Woman", "Waltz To Heaven", "Elegy For Fannie Lou", "Lyons Street", "Chazz", and "New Life". ✨✧ Luther IngramIf Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right ... LP
Koko, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful mellow soul from Luther Ingram – and a record that gave the south one of its greatest soul anthems of the 70s! "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right" is one of those genre-defining tunes – a slow-burning track that shows a new level of maturity for southern soul in the 70s – sweetly sad vocals from Luther right out front of the mix, supported with bubbling backings that ooze sex throughout – and a message of pride in the face of love that had an undeniable impact on a whole generation. The rest of the album's equally great – done with slightly fuller backings at times, and a more familiar Memphis soul groove at others – a perfect showcase for the mighty talents of Ingram at this high point of his career. In addition to "If Loving You Is Wrong", other titles include "Dying & Crying", "I Remember", "I Can't Stop", "Love Ain't Gonna Run Me Away", and "I'll Be Your Shelter". LP, Vinyl record album

Claude Francois & OthersClaude Francois Retrospective 1962 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1962. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
The famous French rocker Claude Francois made his debut in 1962 – and this cool set brings together his initial 7" EP release with some other very groovy work from the time! Claude steps out on his own tunes "Belles Belles Belles", "Moi Je Pense Encore A Toi", "Venus En Blue Jeans", and "Hey Potatoes" – and also contributes tunes to a set of four releases by Koko. But maybe the coolest part of the set – and the biggest – is a full album's worth of material from the band of Olivier Despax, mostly instrumentals with Madison grooves and other hip styles – nice organ and plenty of guitar, then vocals from Claude right at the end. Despax titles include "Lolo's Madison", "The Madison", "A Little Bit Of Shout (part 1 & 2)", "Mashed Potatoes", and "Paris Madison". The set then ends with two tracks from the more folksy Danyel Gerard – and a cool Franco/Arabian take on "La Nabout Twist" by Koko. CD

Gene HarrisNexus ... LP
Blue Note, 1976. Sealed ... $19.99
A great little solo set from Gene Harris – and a perfect example of that magical time after he'd left the Three Sounds, but hadn't yet hit the more standard styles of later years – a period when Harris was really experimenting with a wide range of keyboards and sounds! The set has arranger Jerry Peters weighing in – bringing some of his own quirky touches into play with Gene's wonderful work on keyboards – which includes plenty of Fender Rhodes and moog, as well as other keys of the time too. Funky titles include "Koko & Lee Rose", "Funky Business", "Rushin Roulette", "HRD (Boogie)", and "Gettin Down Country" – and the set's got a great mellow moody soul track called "Prayer 76", with a bit of a Roy Ayers feel. Mercury, 1957/1958. Sealed ... $9.99
A killer batch of hardbop tracks – no-nonsense, straight-ahead, and with all the fire of Roach's work with Clifford Brown! The set was recorded a few years after the untimely death of the Brown/Roach group – and although the album's got "Charlie Parker" in the title, there's a lot more going on here than just a bop revival mode. Players include Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, and George Coleman – and the album's got that Prestige Records feel from the late 50s, similar to some of Mobley's own work for that label at the time. Titles include "Yardbird Suite", "Confirmation", "Koko", "Billie's Bounce", and "Au Privave". LP, Vinyl record album

Honest Jons (UK), Late 20s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A fascinating collection of West African music recorded in England during the late 20s – material done for the Zonophone label as part of a big wave of colonial immigration to London at the time! The package is one of the deepest-digging we've seen so far on the Honest Jon's label – and the music, although quite old, is really incredible – done in a range of African styles and languages, and presented with surprising clarity, given the age of the originals. There's a feel here that's almost like ethnographic recordings done in the homelands many years later – and the package is supported by some wonderful notes that paint a vivid picture of the lives and struggles of African immigrants in the UK during the period. Titles include "Garse Yer Fido" by Oni Johnson, "Nitsi Koko Ko Ko" by Isaac Jackson, "Bukay" by John Mugat, "Asin Asin (part 2)" by Kumasi Trio, "Rue Bai Rue Bai" by James Tucker, "Obu Kofi" by Ben Simmons, "Abowe Dsane Nmaka Tso" by The Ga Quartet, and "Wasiu Dowu" by Nicholas De Heer. A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! Concord, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stone Latin funk from the great Willie Bobo – tracks recorded during his prime early 70s years with the Bo-Gents, but never issued until now! The material was found by Bobo's son on some lost master tapes – but it's easily some of the funkiest, most hard-hitting Willie Bobo ever recorded – and why this stuff wasn't issued back in the day is a real mystery to us! The sound is totally great – with lots of snapping Latin undercurrents at the bottom of the grooves, and plenty of warmly soulful instrumentation on the top – a bit electric, with lots of guitar and some keyboards, but often giving way to some impeccable horn parts that really set the tone of the tunes! Great work throughout – a real lost treasure, and some of the funkiest work by Willie you'll ever hope to find! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". A stunning selection of highlife material from the Nigerian scene – a huge double-length collection that really offers up a vivid example of the music that was in place before the big wave of 70s Afro Funk and other new styles! The work here is different than some of the more commercial highlife recordings you might know – especially those from the big 80s years of world music – as the recording quality is often nice and raw, and the focus is mostly on acoustic percussion, electric guitar, and jazzier horn lines next to the vocals – with grooves usually moving at a mighty nice clip in a bold explosion of color! The bulk of the work on the 19 track set is from the 50s through the early 70s – and titles include "Yei Ngebewoh" by ET Menseh & The Tempos, "Akwanoma Hiahii" by Rambler Dance Band, "Muntie (Highlife Charanga)" by Ramblers International, "Eyaa Dudm" by Professional Uhuru Band, "Ogiobo" by Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Titibitis Of Africa, "Osondi Owendi" by Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, and "Koko Ahataw Kur" by George Williams Aingo. Hatology (Switzerland), 1993. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Not necessarily the bebop fest that you might expect from the title, but a wonderful extrapolation of earlier jazz ideas shaped by the musical vision of Athony Braxton! The tunes here are all originals by Charlie Parker – plus a few more by Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis – all older bop standards that are used as vehicles for freer expression by a group that includes Braxton on reeds, Ari Brown on tenor and soprano saxes, Paul Smoker on trumpet, Misha Mengelberg on piano, Joe Fonda on bass, and either Han Bennink or Pheeroan AkLaff on drums. Some of the numbers are taken in a relatively classic bebop mode, but others move into territory that's much freer and more concerned with sound and texture – as you might hear in some of Braxton's own compositions. The mix of modes is really wonderful – swinging between poles of jazz in a way that reminds us of some of Braxton's best 70s recordings. Titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Dewey Square", "Klactoveesedstene", "An Oscar For Treadwell", "Bebop", "Bongo Bop", "Yardbird Suite", and "Koko". CD

✨✧ BuariDisco Soccer ... CD
Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! A 60s Cali group named The Pyramids, but one who might have been named The Monks instead – given that all their members shaved their heads, while also delivering a razor-sharp version of guitar-heavy surf rock! The Pyramids may not have been the biggest name on the west coast scene at the time – but like so many other "lost" groups, they've got amazing instrumental chops – not just on guitar, but on bass, drums, and keyboards – which they deliver with great intensity in this mix of vocal and instrumental tracks! Titles include "Koko Joe", "Sticks & Skins", "Paul", "Here Comes Marsha", "Walkin The Dog", "Everybody", "Out Of Limits", "Contact", "Pressure", "Pyramid Stomp", "Custom Caravan", and "Midnight Run". London's Kokoroko are a group with roots in many traditions and global modes – but they've also got a cohesive jazz-based sensibility that really makes the whole thing come together – and makes their music feel fresh and new, instead of a contemporary take on older modes! There's definitely strands of West African styles that run through the record, with vocals on a number of cuts – but those are offset by these prominent instrumental passages too – always given lots of different inflections, depending on the tracks – as the group have a lot to draw from in an octet lineup that mixes together trumpet, keyboards, alto, trombone, guitar, and plenty of percussion. Titles include "Age Of Ascent", "Something's Going On", "Blue Robe", "Home", "War Dance", "Those Good Times", "Soul Searching", and "Ewa Inu". LP, Vinyl record album

Peace & Rhythm, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Kokolo do a great job of mixing up modes here – but maybe that's no surprise, as producer/singer Ray Lugo's been giving us great work for many many years – the kind of globe-opening grooves that really marks a generation who were raised on equal parts American funk and overseas modes! Those influences share center stage here – in grooves that are a bit Latin, a bit Afro-styled, and always pretty darn funky – topped with tight horns, but really driven from the bottom by the basslines and percussion. Titles include "Ethiopia", "How We Gonna Work It Out", "Ghost Riders", "100 Fevers", "La Buena Fe", "The Big Bamboo", and "Afrika Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue-eyed funk from Kokomo – and a record that's got a surprisingly funky feel, despite it's slightly trippy cover! The group mix warm vocals with tighter grooves on the bottom – almost an Average White Band sort of feel at times, but maybe a bit more crossover on the sweeter tracks – but in a nice way! Production is relatively laidback, and instrumentation includes sweet flute from Mel Collins, plus a bit of Arp – on tracks that include an extended cover of Bobby Womack's "I Can Understand It", plus "Angel", "Kitty Sittin Pretty", "Forever", and "I'm Sorry Babe". A beautiful album that perfectly mixes both sides of Aretha Franklin's talents – the hard-edged soul singer who first flourished at Atlantic records in the late 60s, and the artist who was growing even more as a vocalist – really reaching out her wings to more sophisticated material! There's a balance here that makes the record one of the deepest that Franklin ever recorded for Atlantic – lots of larger Arif Mardin touches, but also some raw moments that really round things out – on titles that include Aretha's classic take on the Weldon Irvine/Nina Simone tune "Young Gifted & Black", the funky classic "Rock Steady", the wonderful mellow groover "Day Dreaming", the hit "Brand New Me", and the strangely compelling "First Snow In Kokomo" – plus other titles that include "All The King's Horses", "Oh Me Oh My", "Border Song", "Didn't I Blow Your Mind", "April Fools", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "The Long & Winding Road". Honi GordonHoni Gordon Sings ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1962. Used ... $6.99 9.99
An excellent – and obscure – session of female vocals from the 50s! Singer Honi Gordon was part of a harmony group, The Gordons, who sung with Charles Mingus briefly in the 50s – and that modernist tradition is kept strongly in this, her one solo LP. The record's got some extremely strong accompaniment, in a Mingus-esque vein, by Jaki Byard and Ken McIntyre – and although Honi's style is sultry, it's also got a dark edge that really makes the album stand out from other vocal sessions of the time. Tracks include "Strollin'", "My Kokomo", "Cupid", and "Walkin' (Out the Door)". CD

The great drummer Tony Allen left our planet all too soon – but not before cutting this fantastic album as part of the Jazz Is Dead series – a killer record that may be one of the best he's given us in the past decade or so! The format here is different than some of Tony's other records, but also different than the other Jazz Is Dead records – as the instrumentation is fuller than those, with a brace of horns that really fills things up – while Tony delivers these amazing rhythm patterns on the bottom, supported with basslines from Adrian Younge, who also adds in all sorts of very cool keyboards! There's more noise and darkness at times than we've heard on some of Allen's bigger label sets – and we mean that in a really great way – and the drummer is maybe most up in the mix of all the instruments, so you can really hear Tony going to town at his funky best. The classic first album from Hiroshima – a group who took the 70s experiments in Japanese fusion right into the American mainstream – with a wonderful blend of jazz and soul, and a production style that was never too polished or commercial! The group's led by reedman Dan Kuramota – who plays both sax and flutes, including a bit of Japanese wooden flute – which gives the record a few slight "Eastern" touches a times, although the overall vibe is strongly in the best soulful fusion of the period! In keeping with that approach, there's a bit of vocals on the record – sung in English with a soulful vibe – on titles that include "Lion Dance", "Da Da", "Taiko Song", "Holidays", "Never Ever", and "Kokoro". ✨✧ John RenbournFaro Annie ... LP
Reprise, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An album of understated brilliance from the great John Renbourn – a set that mostly just features John on vocals and guitar, working through tunes of a traditional nature – yet delivering a record that's full of tremendously powerful moments! There's none of the hoke here that you might have gotten from a folk revival record from a decade before – and instead, Renbourn's bringing all the amazing new discoveries he and his contemporaries have unlocked in the acoustic guitar, as a way of opening up some of the darker corners and spookier elements of the tunes – none of which should be that strong on their own, but which work together here beautifully. Renbourn gets a bit of help from time to time – vocals from Dorris Henderson, harmonica from Pete Dyer, and drums from Terry Cox – but most of the set is just vocals and guitar, even more timeless in 1971 than it might have been before John plays a bit of sitar and harmonica, too – and titles include "Kokomo Blues", "Little Sadie", "Shake Shake Mama", 'The Cuckoo","Willy O Winsbury", "Faro Annie", and "Come On In My Kitchen". Dave/Joey has always had a really great ear for the classic – carrying forward the best sorts of 70s and 80s elements from the world of funk, club, and soul – all with a sense of perfection that rivals the work of bigger names like Incognito or Brand New Heavies, and always served up with a killer ear for the dancefloor!
