Hans Koch & Paul LovensNephlokokkygia 1992 ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1992. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Fantastic reedwork from Hans Koch – a player captured here at the height of his powers, on a series of live improvisations with drummer Paul Lovens, recorded during a tour of Eastern Europe in the early 90s! Koch doesn't always get his due alongside some of the bigger names of the overseas scene – but his work here is fantastic on a range of reeds – tenor, soprano, clarinet, and bass clarinet – all used with the kind of quick-thinking tones and textures you might hear from a range of players that might include Evan Parker and Mats Gustafsson! Drummer Lovens is always great too, but really seems to wrap his work here around the lead inspiration of Koch – using drums, cymbals, gongs, and even a musical saw at all the right moments, in all the right ways – on long improvisations titled "In Sofia", "In Warna", "In Plovidiv", and "In Russe". Clarke Boland Big BandHandle With Care ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1962. Used ... $12.99
Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, sharp-edged frontlines, and some great solo work by players who include Benny Bailey, Derek Humble, Jimmy Woode, Shahib Shihab, Idrees Sulieman, and Fats Sadi – coming together in a brilliant trans-Atlantic meeting of jazz talents! Tracks include "Long Note Blues", "Speedy Reeds", "Sonor", and "Om Mani Padme Hum". CD

Don Ellis OrchestraShock Treatment ... CD
Columbia/Koch, 1968. Used ... $5.99
A great batch of electric-infused big band tracks – and one of the first really funky records from Don Ellis! Ellis was an emerging California trumpeter/composer who'd noodled around with some modern big band work in the mid 60s – but this hip 1968 session has him adding in elements like clavinet, Fender Rhodes, sitar, timbales, vibes, percussion, and even a spot of vocals to change the groove to a more mod and swinging one. Titles include "Mercy Mabye Mercy", "New Kind Of Country", "Zim", "Star Children", "Opus 5", "Rasty", "The Tihai", and "Milo's Theme". Plus, the CD also includes some bonus tracks not on the original album! CD

Freddie HubbardHigh Blues Pressure ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1968. Used ... $11.99
A real gem from Freddie Hubbard's 60s years – an all soul jazz outing, cut with a hip array of players that show that young Fred was definitely on the forefront of jazz at the time! Despite the "blues" in the title, the main groove is spiritual soul jazz – in a style that puts Freddie a few years ahead of the Strata East crew, and working here in a mode that he oddly didn't continue into the 70s. The album's got a really righteous sound overall – with long tracks that really stretch out wonderfully with rich feeling and spirit – thanks to work from players who include Weldon Irvine and Kenny Barron on piano, Bennie Maupin and James Spaulding on reeds, and Freddie Waits on drums. The set's filled with great original tunes that include Freddie's "Latina", "True Colors", and "For BP" – as well as a version of Weldon Irvine's "Can't Let Her Go". CD

Bob JamesBJ4 ... CD
CTI/Koch, 1976. Used ... $14.99
The 4th in Bob James legendary run of Fender Rhodes classics for CTI – and a record that still has him working with the dark edges that made the first few so great! As usual with these sets, there's a way of putting over the groove that's really unique – not really funky, but spacious enough to make even the simplest instrumental statements resonate with a punch that other fusion records never had – a James-like approach to rhythm and sound that's totally great, and which is made even better by key contributions from CTI labelmates who include Hubert Laws, Eric Gale, and Art Farmer. James plays Fender Rhodes, Arp, and clavinet – and titles include the funky sample cut "Tappan Zee", plus "Nights Are Forever Without You", "Where The Wind Blows Free", "Pure Imagination", "Treasure Island", and "El Verano". ✨✧ Gary BurtonDuster ... CD
RCA/Koch, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really incredible record from the great Gary Burton – a key 60s set that definitely has him finding a musical voice that's all his own – a way of using the vibes that nobody else had ever attempted before! The instrument is a flurry of chromatic beauty – tones and light exploding at each new twist and turn – mixed here with superb work from a quartet that includes Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums! The names of the players alone might be enough to give you a picture of the sound – but let us go onto say that the overall approach is amazing – angular, jagged, and more rhythmic than melodic – but equally swinging, in sort of a modal way. Tracks include "Ballet", "One Two 1234", "Liturgy", "Response", "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan", and "Sweet Rain". CD

✨✧ Milt Jackson & Coleman HawkinsBean Bags ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really work nicely with the album's slight Latin inflections – a bit like those you might hear on some of Hawkins' Impulse Records material from the same generation. Milt Jackson's vibes are great too – chromatic and edgey, and set up with rhythm support from Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Titles include "Indian Blues", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Sandra's Blues", "Stuffy", and "Close Your Eyes". CD

✨✧ King CurtisKing Curtis Live At Fillmore West ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The King Curtis combo in all of its glory – really grooving hard here in a set of instrumental performances recorded at the same time as Aretha Franklin's famous live date at the Fillmore West! King backed Aretha up on her own record from Fillmore, but this set features all the instrumental grooves laid down by Curtis and his group before Aretha took the stage – very tight and funky numbers that showcase King's work on alto and soprano sax, as well as organ from Billy Preston, guitar from Cornell Dupree, electric piano from Truman Thomas, and funky drums from Bernard Pretty Purdie! The Memphis Horns get into the action a bit – blasting out when the tunes require it – and as with the Franklin album, the recording style here is totally great – very "live", but still with the best focus of Atlantic studio soul! Titles include a smoking 7 minute version of King's funky classic "Memphis Soul Stew", plus long takes on "Changes", "I Stand Accused", and "Soul Serenade" – as well as shorter versions of "A Whole Lotta Love" and "Ode To Billy Joe"! ✨✧ Gil EvansSvengali ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players – as Gil's working with a group of younger soul jazz and spiritual soloists that include Ted Dunbar, Billy Harper, and Hannibal Marvin Peterson – as well as the older soul modernist Richard Williams. But there's also some other specifically Evans-like touches to the record that stand out – like Gil's stark notes on acoustic piano and his lighter work on the electric keys – plus a bit of inventive synthesizer from David Horowitz, who makes a few tracks really crackle with energy. Tracks include "Zee Zee", "Blues In Orbit", "Cry Of Hunger", and "Thoroughbred" – the latter two of which are lovely compositions by Billy Harper! CD

✨✧ Buddy DeFrancoBlues Bag ... CD
Vee Jay/Koch, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real lost treasure – and an incredible session that offers a real meeting of minds that's far more than you'd expect from the simple cover and title! The set is a later one for Vee Jay, and it brings together half of the Jazz Messengers with a batch of west coast players – in a groove that wonderfully mixes together different traditions and rhythms in jazz – and which steps out with a sound that's far more than the sum of its parts! Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and Curtis Fuller join a group headed by Buddy De Franco, and featuring Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, plus Victor Sproles on bass and Freddie Hill on trumpet. The sound of the group is quite unusual – and a lot lighter than you'd guess – giving Buddy plenty of room to solo in a breezy style that's grown tremendously since his 50s recordings – pushed along by some heavier soul from Art and the group. Titles include "Rain Dance", "Blues Bag", "Twelve Tone Blues", "Kush", and "Cousin Mary". CD

King Size Soul has always been one of Curtis' best albums from the 60's. It's got the massive funky track "Memphis Soul Stew" (which has been sampled more than once), plus some other groovy pop tracks, given the Curtis twist – like "Live For Life", "For What It's Worth", and "I Was Made To Love Her". Great Memphis Hits is almost as good, and has the King groovin on funky sax versions of some of the best Stax tracks, like "Green Onions", "The Dog", and "Hold On, I'm Comin". 22 cuts in all – and 2 LPs on one CD!
