✨✧ Hans Koch & Paul LovensNephlokokkygia 1992 ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1992. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic reedwork from Hans Koch – a player captured here at the height of his powers, on a series of live improvisations with drummer Paul Lovens, recorded during a tour of Eastern Europe in the early 90s! Koch doesn't always get his due alongside some of the bigger names of the overseas scene – but his work here is fantastic on a range of reeds – tenor, soprano, clarinet, and bass clarinet – all used with the kind of quick-thinking tones and textures you might hear from a range of players that might include Evan Parker and Mats Gustafsson! Drummer Lovens is always great too, but really seems to wrap his work here around the lead inspiration of Koch – using drums, cymbals, gongs, and even a musical saw at all the right moments, in all the right ways – on long improvisations titled "In Sofia", "In Warna", "In Plovidiv", and "In Russe". Sylvia SymsSongs By Sylvia Syms (Koch pressing) ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1952/1954. Used ... $6.99
Moody vocals from Sylvia Syms – recorded in two different settings: one featuring the piano trio of Barbara Carroll, the other featuring a larger group led by Johnny Richards, with Al Cohn on tenor sax. Sylvia's nicely restrained on these sides – more evocative than usual, on a set list that includes "Down In The Depths On the Ninetieth Floor", "Lonely Woman", "Imagination", "Can't You Just See Yourself", "Comes Love", and "What Is There To Say". ✨✧ Von FreemanDoin' It Right Now ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1972. Used ... $19.99
A classic "discovery" of tenor saxophonist Von Freeman – one that was already relatively late in his career, but a key appearance on Atlantic under the auspices of Roland Kirk! The setting here is as loose and laidback as Von needs to really do his thing – backing by a trio that features fellow Chicagoan John Young on piano, plus Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all hanging back nicely to let Freeman dominate the set on tenor. The album's noteworthy for its inclusion of a few original tunes by Von – "White Sand", "Portrait Of John Young", "Doin It Right Now", "Brother George", and "Catnap" – all of which mark a nice contrast from some of the more traditional standards that show up on other Freeman albums of the 70s. RZA As Bobby DigitalDigital Bullet ... LP
Koch/Get On Down, 2001. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 30.98
We're not sure if we're in the minority, but we definitely dig the Bobby Digital projects by RZA more and more as the years go on – maybe because as the decades roll by, we wonder why we ever doubted any of the farther-flung corners of the Wu-Tang universe! RZA is still very much at the top of his game here – extending some of the unique sample culture of the core Wu-Tang sound, but also refining things a bit more too – not in a selfish way, as it almost seems as if he's making things a bit more lean to welcome in the album's wide array of top-shelf guests! Titles include "Glocko Pop" featuring Wu-Tang Clan, "Do U" featuring GZA & Prodical, "Brooklyn Babies" featuring Masta Killa, "La Rhumba" featuring Method Man, Killa Sin & Berretta 9, "Black Widow Pt 2" featuring ODB, "Fools" featuring Killa Sin, "Shady" featuring Intrigue, "Sickness", and "Must Be Bobby". ✨✧ Clarke Boland Big BandHandle With Care ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, sharp-edged frontlines, and some great solo work by players who include Benny Bailey, Derek Humble, Jimmy Woode, Shahib Shihab, Idrees Sulieman, and Fats Sadi – coming together in a brilliant trans-Atlantic meeting of jazz talents! Tracks include "Long Note Blues", "Speedy Reeds", "Sonor", and "Om Mani Padme Hum". CD

✨✧ Phineas NewbornPhineas' Rainbow ... CD
BMG/Koch, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A smoking set from Phineas Newborn – recorded in 3 different modes for the record – solo, trio, and quartet! The quartet and trio sides feature some nice guitar from his brother Calvin Newborn – whose bluesier tones really help give the record a deeper feel than usual for Phineas, and help expand out the sound a lot. The trio material is drumless, which makes for a cool combination of piano, bass, and guitar – and even the solo tracks have a nice feel too – a bit more introspective, sprinkled throughout the record to balance out the sound nicely. Titles include "Overtime", "Come To Baby Do", "Land's End", "She", "Tin Tin Deo", and "Clarisse". CD

✨✧ George RussellJazz Workshop ... CD
RCA/Koch, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very hip early work from George Russell – a set that's maybe not as high-concept as some of his later records, but which still has a strikingly modern vibe! Russell's trying out some of his new tonal ideas here – and has a group that's very well-chosen for the project – with Art Farmer on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Bill Evans on piano, and Barry Galbraith on guitar – all players with just the right sort of color in their tone, able to illustrate George's ideas but still bring a bit of personality to the mix as well. Titles are mostly originals, written with slight touches of whimsy, but less of the indulgence on that front as you'd hear on west coast material – and tracks include "Witch Hunt", "The Sad Sargeant", "Ballad Of Hix Blewitt", "Knights of The Steamtable", "Jack's Blues", and "Night Sound". CD

✨✧ Vinicius CantuariaCymbals ... CD
Koch, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sublime work from Vinicius Cantuaria – an album with a bit of bossa in the mix, but a bit more depth too – a sound that stretches out with a wonderful sense of feeling throughout! Cantuaria's vocals have just gotten better and better with age – not "old", but emotionally mature – in ways that carry a hell of a lot with just a little bit of effort – drenching each line of a tune with a personal sensibility that's really amazing. Backings are as simple as the vocals – but like the singing, they too have a sense of well-placed "rightness" that makes each tune sparkle anew – a magical combination of percussion, acoustic guitar, and some occasional violin or cello – all used in just the right ways to fit the mood of the tune. And even though Cantuaria's vocals are all in Portuguese, they still have a way of getting to us even though we can't understand the language – really pushing past the confines of language into some sweet sort of universal space. Titles include "Ominira", "Tua Cara", "Champs De Mars", "Voce E Eu", "Galope", "Voce Esta Sumindo", "Prantos", and "Chuva". CD

Rolf & Joachim KuhnReunion In Berlin ... CD
Amiga/BE Records (Germany), 1965. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Tremendous work from the brothers Rolf and Joachim Kuhn – and exactly the kind of record that will have you completely rethinking your opinion about the clarinet in jazz! Rolf's a player with roots in more traditional modes, but by the time of this mid 60s session he was a very committed modernist – and uses the instrument here in modes that feel a lot more like the soprano sax spirit of John Coltrane or Steve Lacy at the time – open, free, unbridled – and often set to a modal groove that bubbles up perfectly from Joachim's work on piano! Sometimes Joachim's a bit too out for us, but he hangs nicely on the inside here – not entirely straight, but always working with a sense of rhythmic progression, which gets support from Klaus Koch on bass and Reinhard Schwartz on drums. Yet Rolf's the real star of the show – as he blows with a fantastic range of sounds and phrasing – searing at some points, soulful at others – and blowing us away on titles that include "The Man Man", "Life From The Moon", "Mobile Waltz", "Green Stocking", and "Corruption". Prestige, 1957. Sealed ... $11.99
Four altos in perfect formation – a record that captures a young Phil Woods at the height of his powers, and offers a rare non-baritone set from the great Sahib Shihab! The style here is similar to the Prestige tenor blowing sessions of the time – with core rhythms by a trio that features Mal Waldron on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and altos from the four players in the lead – coming together a bit at the start, then breaking off into some really wonderful solo work that's arguably tighter and better executed than most tenor sessions of this type! Titles include "Pedal Eyes", "Kokochee", "No More Nights", "Kinda Kanonic", and "Staggers". LP, Vinyl record album
