✨✧ Hans Koch & Paul LovensNephlokokkygia 1992 ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1992. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic reedwork from Hans Koch – a player captured here at the height of his powers, on a series of live improvisations with drummer Paul Lovens, recorded during a tour of Eastern Europe in the early 90s! Koch doesn't always get his due alongside some of the bigger names of the overseas scene – but his work here is fantastic on a range of reeds – tenor, soprano, clarinet, and bass clarinet – all used with the kind of quick-thinking tones and textures you might hear from a range of players that might include Evan Parker and Mats Gustafsson! Drummer Lovens is always great too, but really seems to wrap his work here around the lead inspiration of Koch – using drums, cymbals, gongs, and even a musical saw at all the right moments, in all the right ways – on long improvisations titled "In Sofia", "In Warna", "In Plovidiv", and "In Russe". ✨✧ Freddie HubbardBlack Angel (Koch pressing) ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A totally fantastic set from the turn of the 70s, and one of Freddie Hubbard's most soulful, spiritual albums ever – a seminal chapter in the evolution of soul jazz – and a record that was a keen inspiration for changes to come on labels like Strata East and Black Jazz! The group here features Kenny Barron on both electric and acoustic piano – really stretching out with a hip, open sort of sound – possibly his first of this type on record – and other players include James Spaulding on alto and flute, Reggie Workman on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and Patato Valdes on added percussion – giving a more complicated groove to the best numbers. Tunes are all long and well-penned – three by Freddie himself ("Eclipse", "Spacetrack", "Gittin' Down"), one by Kenny Barron ("Black Angel"), and one by Walter Bishop (the original recording of his classic "Coral Keys"!) ✨✧ Shelly ManneBoss Sounds! (Koch pressing) ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Shelly Manne's best records of the 60s – largely because the group's so great! Altoist Frank Strozier was playing with Shelly at the time, and his rich talents on the alto make the record almost worth seeking out for him alone – because here, Strozier's opening up his sound a lot more than in the early days – and going for strange phrasings, sharp edges, and other unusual twists that really add a lot more spice to the set than you might expect! The rest of the group features Conte Candoli, Russ Freeman, and Monty Budwig – and in a way, the record takes off from the energy of Shelly's classic Blackhawk sessions, but with even a bit more tightly dynamic sound. Titles include "Frank's Tune", "You Name It", "Margie", and "Idle One". CD

✨✧ Randy WestonAfrican Cookbook (Koch pressing) ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, Mid 60s/1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer album of African-tinged jazz – recorded privately by Randy Weston in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records! The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments – and at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably because of its progressive nature – but really flowing out with a rich Africanist inspiration, and served up with even sharper modern edges than before! His group here includes Big Black on congas, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Ray Copeland on trumpet – and Copeland also arranged all the tracks, transforming a few older numbers with the bolder spirit of the session. Titles include "Niger Mambo", "African Cookbook", "Portrait Of Vivian", and Weston's classic "Congolese Children". CD

✨✧ Lee KonitzInside Hi-Fi (Koch pressing) ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A gem by Lee Konitz – one of his near-perfect 50s sessions for Atlantic! Lee's tone here is crisp, clear, and hauntingly fresh – modern, yet never academically so – and played with a dexterity that's incredible, but never too in love with itself to go too far. Key players on the session include guitarist Billy Bauer on side one, and bassist Peter Ind and pianist Sal Mosca on side two – both artists who fit Lee's vision perfectly, matching tone and color beautifully. Titles include great readings of "Star Eyes" and "Everything Happens To Me" – plus Konitz tunes "Kary's Trance" and "Cork N Bib" – and a reading of Peter Ind's "Nesuhi's Instant". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoBap-Tizum ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1973. Used ... $11.99
A seminal moment for the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – one of their first albums for a widely-distributed label, and an exceptionally strong live performance that really gets to the core of the group's unique approach! The material was recorded at the Ann Arbor Festival in 1972 – and has the Ensemble playing with a sense of focus and power that's even stronger than their previous indie and European records – really hitting their stride before a large live audience who totally gets their groove, and really eggs them on with enthusiastic support! As usual, the range of instrumentation is great – lots of different reeds, percussion, and brass – handled by the legendary lineup of Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye. Titles include "Oouffnoon", "Ohnedaruth", "Unanka", "Immm", and "Odwalla". CD

Gil EvansSvengali ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1973. Used ... $6.99
A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players – as Gil's working with a group of younger soul jazz and spiritual soloists that include Ted Dunbar, Billy Harper, and Hannibal Marvin Peterson – as well as the older soul modernist Richard Williams. But there's also some other specifically Evans-like touches to the record that stand out – like Gil's stark notes on acoustic piano and his lighter work on the electric keys – plus a bit of inventive synthesizer from David Horowitz, who makes a few tracks really crackle with energy. Tracks include "Zee Zee", "Blues In Orbit", "Cry Of Hunger", and "Thoroughbred" – the latter two of which are lovely compositions by Billy Harper! CD

Freddie GreenMr. Rhythm ... CD
Koch/RCA, 1956. Used ... $6.99
A long overdue classic from Count Basie's excellent 50s guitarist! Freddie was one of the strongest single-line players of the 50s – coming to prominence in the years before Grant Green and Wes Montgomery completely transformed jazz guitar, but never getting as much chance as those greats to record under his own name. This rare 1956 set is one of the few that Freddie ever did on his own, and it's a nicely laidback small group romp, with players that include Al Cohn, Joe Newman, Nat Pierce, and Milt Hinton. Tracks are short, with a focus on Green's guitar on the solos. Titles include "Down For Double", "Free & Easy", "Date With Ray", "Swinging Back", and "Feed Bag". CD

Freddie HubbardHigh Blues Pressure ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1968. Used ... $9.99
A real gem from Freddie Hubbard's 60s years – an all soul jazz outing, cut with a hip array of players that show that young Fred was definitely on the forefront of jazz at the time! Despite the "blues" in the title, the main groove is spiritual soul jazz – in a style that puts Freddie a few years ahead of the Strata East crew, and working here in a mode that he oddly didn't continue into the 70s. The album's got a really righteous sound overall – with long tracks that really stretch out wonderfully with rich feeling and spirit – thanks to work from players who include Weldon Irvine and Kenny Barron on piano, Bennie Maupin and James Spaulding on reeds, and Freddie Waits on drums. The set's filled with great original tunes that include Freddie's "Latina", "True Colors", and "For BP" – as well as a version of Weldon Irvine's "Can't Let Her Go". CD

Milt Jackson & Coleman HawkinsBean Bags ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1958. Used ... $5.99
A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really work nicely with the album's slight Latin inflections – a bit like those you might hear on some of Hawkins' Impulse Records material from the same generation. Milt Jackson's vibes are great too – chromatic and edgey, and set up with rhythm support from Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Titles include "Indian Blues", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Sandra's Blues", "Stuffy", and "Close Your Eyes". CD

✨✧ Thad Jones & Mel Lewis With Ruth BrownBig Band Sound Of Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Featuring Miss Ruth Brown (aka Fine Brown Frame) ... CD
Solid State/Koch, 1968. Used ... $14.99
Ruth Brown joins the big band of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – in a set that's a real standout in the career of all three artists! Thad and Mel already have a pretty great groove going at this point – a large ensemble approach to jazz, yet one that's swingingly soulful – very much on a par with some of Gerald Wilson's hip work of the same time at time. And adding in Ruth Brown's vocals is a great choice – as she not only needs a great showcase like this for her amazing voice, but also because she really helps unlock a soulful sort of energy that the group always had in their instrumental music. The approach is a bit like some of Etta Jones' best 60s recordings – a nice shift for Brown – and titles include "Black Coffee", "Fine Brown Frame", "You Won't Let Go", "Trouble In Mind", and "Be Anything (But Be Mine)". Ira SullivanBird Lives! ... CD
Vee Jay/Koch, 1962. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Way more than just a bop-heavy set – a landmark record that shows a side of the Chicago scene that hardly ever made it on record! In the years after Charlie Parker passed away, tributes to his greatness were a very common thing in local jazz scenes across the US. This is a prime example of that tradition, but way more than that, it's also a killer Chicago jazz session from the old days – featuring trumpeter Ira Sullivan at his best, along with some great local players that include tenorist Nicky Hill, pianist Jodie Christian, and bassist (Raphael) Don Garrett. The music is what you'd expect – loving renditions of Bird standards like "Klacktoveedesesteene" and "Love Letters" – but there's also a lot more going on underneath, and the album's as much a Charlie Parker tribute as it is a batch of bop and soul jazz numbers with a good underground feel. Titles include "Si Si", "Inchworm", "Milestones", "Sketches", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "Shaw Nuff" – and this 2CD reissue adds a heck of a lot more material to the original album – for a total of 15 tracks in all! Roland Hanna's certainly easy to love here – working in a free-flowing trio mode, with a fair bit more soul jazz touches than on some of his later work! Rhythm here is from Ben Tucker on bass and Roy Barnes on drums – both of whom bring in a gentle little groove that augments the more rhythmic side of Hanna's piano – taking his warmer lyrical flow, and giving it a nice sense of focus, especially on some of the standards on the set. Really nice work from Shearing – one of a few obscure albums he cut for the tiny Sheba label in LA, and a record that's handled with the same gentle groove of his best 70s work on MPS! Shearing's trio is augmented by guitar and vibes – making for a sound that's kind of an update of the classic 50s/60s quintet format he was using – but sparkling here from some well-done rhythm work, in a mode that gives the best tracks a groovy little kick. Jazz Casual/Koch, 1961/1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest sets of material from Ralph Gleason's legendary Jazz Casual program – featuring two different soul jazz performances, each from one end of the 60s! First up is Cannonball Adderley's famous quintet – with Nat on trumpet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – blowing in the soulful mode of their classic Riverside recordings, on titles that include "Unit Seven", "Arriving Soon", and "Scotch & Water" – plus some interview material too! Charles Lloyd follows up with a 1968 performance that's very much in his Atlantic mode – longer tracks played in a modal style – with a group that includes Keith Jarrett and Jack De Johnette. There's less interview material on the Lloyd set, and titles include "Forest Flower", "Love Ship", and "Tagore/Passin Thru". CD

Of all of Ray's post-Fania albums in the 70's, this is probably the one that's probably the most straight Latin. Good thing, too, because the set's a very live performance, and it's filled with the kind of vibrant energy that was carrying the New York Latin scene on waves of dynamism and creativity during the time. Tracks are long, with lots of jamming, and soloists include Roberto Rodriguez, Art Webb, and Dick Mesa – with vocals by Reuben Blades and Tito Gomez. ✨✧ Arthur BlytheLenox Avenue Breakdown ... CD
Sony/Koch, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning Columbia Records debut from Arthur Blythe – recorded at a time when the label was really sinking its teeth back into quality jazz, and helping artists like Arthur get some great new exposure! At the time of the date, Blythe had already spent years working in the jazz undergrounds on both coasts – developing a searing sound on alto sax that's perfect for the focused structure of this album – almost a tone poem of sorts, offering up a portrait of the Harlem scene that was a key part of Arthur's life at the time. The sounds are sharp, but also have a sense of energy that really holds them together – guiding the players through long readings of well-penned tunes by Blythe that are filled with loads of energy and life! Players include James Newton on flute, James Blood Ulmer on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, Cecil McBee on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Guillermo Franco on percussion – and titles include "Odessa", "Slidin Through", "Down San Diego Way", and "Lenox Avenue Breakdown". ✨✧ Gary BurtonDuster ... CD
RCA/Koch, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really incredible record from the great Gary Burton – a key 60s set that definitely has him finding a musical voice that's all his own – a way of using the vibes that nobody else had ever attempted before! The instrument is a flurry of chromatic beauty – tones and light exploding at each new twist and turn – mixed here with superb work from a quartet that includes Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums! The names of the players alone might be enough to give you a picture of the sound – but let us go onto say that the overall approach is amazing – angular, jagged, and more rhythmic than melodic – but equally swinging, in sort of a modal way. Tracks include "Ballet", "One Two 1234", "Liturgy", "Response", "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan", and "Sweet Rain". CD

Hardly the kind of country roads you'd find traveled by other musicians – as Gary Burton's sound here is incredibly fresh – still as groundbreaking now as it was back in the 60s! The title might be a reference to Burton's Nashville roots, and the music does have a slightly pastoral vibe – but the overall execution is extremely modern, and filled with the kind of bold tones and sharp turns that always made Burton so wonderful at the start! The group includes Jerry Hahn on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – all very freewheeling, open players – with an equal balance between rhythm and melody. Burton, Swallow, and Hahn composed a good many of the tracks – and titles include "A Singing Song", "Wichita Breakdown", "Country Roads", "The Green Mountains", "True Or False", and "Gone But Forgotten". The loveliest album we've heard from Gal Costa in years – a sweetly jazzy session that features some great arrangements and keyboards from the legendary Cesar Camargo Mariano! Mariano gives the album a nicely laidback feel – one that's almost rootsy at times, especially on a few of the album's more percussive numbers – and Costa herself seems to really open up in the setting, singing with some of the best warmth of her later years, but never sounding too slick or too overproduced. And although there's a bit of electricity on the instrumentation, the album's also got a strongly acoustic feel overall – one that further heightens the intimacy of its sound, and which brings Costa back to some territory that we really love. Mainstream/Koch, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A heartbreaking classic from Terry Huff and his Special Delivery group – a hip 70s harmony soul ensemble who deliver some wonderful backup on the set! The record's a stone east coast classic from way back – arranged and conducted by Al Johnson, with a vibe that's a slightly more polished take on the harmony modes used by George Kerr over at All-Platinum – still never slick or commercial, but that great indie blend of heartbreaking vocals and deeper male sensibilities. Terry Huff has a high-end vocal approach that's great – never cloying or too-sweet, but nicely crackling and almost in a Ralfi Pagan mode at points. Huff wrote most of the songs, and titles include "Poochie", "The Lonely One", "When You're Lonely", "I Destroyed Your Love", "That's When It Hurts", and "Why Doesn't Love Last". ✨✧ Phineas NewbornHere Is Phineas ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic early work by Phineas Newborn – and a record cut right after his emergence from the great Memphis scene of the 1950s! Most of the album features trio material – cut with Kenny Clarke on drums and Oscar Pettiford on bass – but a few tracks also feature some very nice guitar work by Newborn's lesser-known brother, Calvin – who helps give the record some slight bluesy undercurrents you won't hear on other albums from Phineas at the time. The style is a mix of bop soloing and that lyrical approach to the keyboard that Newborn was forging along with a few other popular pianists of his generation – and titles include "Dahoud", "Celia", "Barbados", and "Newport Blues". ✨✧ Mary Lou Williams/Barbara CarrollLadies Of Jazz ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1951. Used ... Out Of Stock
An odd pairing of musicians – but a classic album of piano jazz from the 50s, and some of the more obscure sides by both players! Barbara Carroll works here in a really lovely way that retains the fluidity of her 50s work on RCA, but which also has a slightly rougher edge – a mode that's got some nicely boozy undercurrents, yet still the sort of poise and grace that made Carroll one of the best female pianists of the time. Joe Shulman is on bass and Herb Wasserman is on drums – and titles include "Taking A Chance On Love", "Love Of My Life", "Autumn In New York", "Tis Autumn", and "The Lady's In Love With You". Mary Lou Williams works here in a bit of a comeback mode – some of her first American recordings in a number of years, with Carl Pruitt on bass and Bill Clark on drums. Titles inlcude "Opus Z", "S' Wonderful", "In The Purple Grotto", "From This Moment On", and "You're The Cream In My Coffee". CD

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoFanfare For The Warriors ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful little record from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – and although performed for a bigger label than some of their previous indie outings, the set may be one of the most dynamic the group ever recorded! Atlantic Records is clearly giving the group a lot of space here – as they're recording in Chicago, in a relatively free setting – able to stretch out and change things up with amazing energy – never just free jazz exploration, but a very rich, complicated, well-considered approach to their many layers of instrumentation and rhythm! Muhal Richard Abrams makes a great guest appearance on the record – adding in some wonderful piano passages – and the set includes the usual mix of reeds, percussion, and vocals – plus the beautiful bass work of Malachi Favors. Tracks include "Nonaah", "The Key", "Tnoona", and "Fanfare For The Warriors". CD

✨✧ Arthur BlytheIllusions ... CD
Sony/Koch, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the boldest of Arthur Blythe's albums for Columbia Records – as the set bristles with newly creative energy right from the start, and provides a great showcase for some of the criss-crossings of styles and rhythms that were taking place on the New York scene at the time! The lineup alone announces something special – a cool combination of James Blood Ulmer on guitar, John Hicks on piano, Fred Hopkins on bass, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Steve McCall on drums – working together in some slight variations at times, often with these angular edges that are perfectly sharpened by Arthur's amazing work on alto sax. The music's never too free, but quite outside for a major label at the time – balanced out so that it's never overindulgent at all. Titles include "Bush Baby", "Miss Nancy", "My Son Ra", and "Carespin With Mamie". CD

✨✧ Johnny ColesWarm Sound (plus bonus track) ... CD
Koch/CBS, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by trumpeter Johnny Coles – a player who's probably best known to the world for his work with Charles Mingus, or for his other 60s session on Blue Note! This album's quite different than both of those aspects of Johnny's career – and has him blowing some sweetly soulful ballads in a quartet setting with Kenny Drew on piano, Peck Morrison on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. The feel is quite like some of Art Farmer's best of this nature from the time – laidback, but never too sleepy or sloppy – and Johnny definitely brings an edge to the record on the best numbers. Titles include some great Randy Weston compositions – "Hi Fly", "Pretty Strange", and "Where" – plus Johnny Coles' own "Room 3". CD also features the bonus track "Babe's Blues". CD

✨✧ Von FreemanDoin' It Right Now ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic "discovery" of tenor saxophonist Von Freeman – one that was already relatively late in his career, but a key appearance on Atlantic under the auspices of Roland Kirk! The setting here is as loose and laidback as Von needs to really do his thing – backing by a trio that features fellow Chicagoan John Young on piano, plus Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all hanging back nicely to let Freeman dominate the set on tenor. The album's noteworthy for its inclusion of a few original tunes by Von – "White Sand", "Portrait Of John Young", "Doin It Right Now", "Brother George", and "Catnap" – all of which mark a nice contrast from some of the more traditional standards that show up on other Freeman albums of the 70s. An almost-accidental classic by Prodigy – a great solo project after the split of Mobb Deep, and a set that was originally intended to just circulate as a mixtape – but which got issued properly based on the quality of the tracks! Alchemist is a key partner here – and the tracks have this approach that's straightforward, yet sophisticated – that subtle blend that Mobb Deep did so well, but pushed into more of a 21st Century east coast vibe. Titles include "Down & Out In New York City", "Return Of The Mac", "Stop Fronting", "My Priorities", "Nickel & A Nail", "That's That", "Take It To The Top", and "The Rotten Apple". A beautiful blend of jazz, voices, and soul – a landmark record in Max Roach's vocal experimental tradition, and a fitting companion piece to Billy Harper's classic Capra Black album – an equally soulful blend of styles! Like Capra Black, this set features Harper's sharp and soulful tenor up against a choir of voices – blowing on hard-hitting soul jazz arrangements handled by Max Roach, of the style he used on some of his classic early 60s sides for Impulse and Candid. The tracks are long, Harper's in top form, and the group also includes Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet and George Cables on piano – ultra hip cats, always! Cuts include "Motherless Child", "Let Thy People Go", and "Troubled Waters. CD

✨✧ George RussellJazz Workshop ... CD
RCA/Koch, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very hip early work from George Russell – a set that's maybe not as high-concept as some of his later records, but which still has a strikingly modern vibe! Russell's trying out some of his new tonal ideas here – and has a group that's very well-chosen for the project – with Art Farmer on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Bill Evans on piano, and Barry Galbraith on guitar – all players with just the right sort of color in their tone, able to illustrate George's ideas but still bring a bit of personality to the mix as well. Titles are mostly originals, written with slight touches of whimsy, but less of the indulgence on that front as you'd hear on west coast material – and tracks include "Witch Hunt", "The Sad Sargeant", "Ballad Of Hix Blewitt", "Knights of The Steamtable", "Jack's Blues", and "Night Sound". A strange and beautiful album from the late Don Pullen! The record is almost a funk album at times, but it's really more of an electrically-tinged session that brings Pullen's lively keyboards into play with some strident groupings that include George Adams, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, and Roland Prince. The whole thing's got a really sweet mellow feel – with lots of nice work on Fender Rhodes and clavinet by Pullen. Tracks include "Big Alice", "Poodie Pie", "Last Year's Lies & Tomorrow's Promises", and the Latin-tinged "Kadji". CD

✨✧ Franz Koglmann & Lee KonitzWe Thought About Duke ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1994. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling tributes to Duke Ellington we've ever heard – a performance of his music that really deviates from the sound of the original, yet which also keeps all the complicated spirit of Duke intact! Trumpeter Franz Koglmann is really at the helm of the core groups on the set – leading the Monoblue Quartet on some tracks, an ensemble that features Tony Coe on clarinet and tenor, Burkhard Stangl on guitar, and Klaus Koch on bass – and the Pipe Trio on others, with Rudolf Ruschel on trombone and Raoul Herget on tuba. Lee Konitz joins in on alto with both ensembles, save for one track – and the whole record is a brilliant piano-less and drum-less outing that has the horns coming together in ways that are almost inspired by Jimmy Giuffre, but which take on some richer chromatic tones in their exploration of Ellington themes. The whole record really opens up the Ellington concept tremendously – and titles include "Love Is In My Heart", "Lament For Javanette", "Ko Ko", "Zweet Zurzday", "Pyramid", and "The Mooche" – plus a few variations on "Thoughts About Duke", an original by Koglmann. Andrzej Korzynski composed these wonderful tracks for a successful Polish film issued elsewhere under the title Big Deal – but the sounds within are so great on their own, they don't even need a movie to stand as a testament to Korzynski's genius! The composer was easily one of the most inventive on the Eastern European scene – and even in a mainstream movie like this, he not only brings to play this amazing understanding of the possibilities of conventional instruments, but also created a heck of a lot more music than was actually used in the film – which means that the 22 track LP features almost double the amount of never-heard music than the director put up on screen – most of which is even more amazing than the music on the original soundtrack! Columbia/Lawson (Japan), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $46.99 56.99
An album with a sweet title, but a very hard groove – a stone stormer from Japanese drummer Takeo Moriyama – put together with these soaring reed lines that almost make the whole thing feel like an early 70s album from Elvin Jones! There's a very spiritual feel to the music at times – a searching quality that comes through especially in the work on tenor from Yoshio Kuniyasu, and additional flute and alto from Kochi Matsukze – as well as in the piano from Fumio Itabashi, who works here with his best modal impulses – really building up the groove in a wonderful way, and helping to keep the whole thing as soulful as some of the best US work of this nature from the mid 70s. Tracks are all originals, in Japanese – save for the group's version of the famous title tune, which offers up one mellower moment. LP, Vinyl record album

A slightly smaller take on the Ellington sound – but one that's still a bit fuller than you might guess from the "Small Bands" on the cover! There's definitely a more intimate feel here than usual – especially given the size of ensembles Duke was working with in the 60s – but the approach is more like some of the earliest Ellington combos, a full feel as most of the group works tightly together, while one soloist snakes out with some deeply soulful lines on his own! The first six tracks here feature "The Combo Suite" – recorded in 1967, with some especially nice horn work from Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Cat Anderson on trumpet, and Lawrence Brown on trombone. Remaining tracks were recorded in 1970, in New York and Las Vegas – and include "Noon Mooning", "Rockochet", "All Too Soon", and "Tippy Toeing Through The Jungle Garden". CD
