✨✧ Sylvia SymsSongs By Sylvia Syms (Koch pressing) ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1952/1954. Used ... $9.99
Moody vocals from Sylvia Syms – recorded in two different settings: one featuring the piano trio of Barbara Carroll, the other featuring a larger group led by Johnny Richards, with Al Cohn on tenor sax. Sylvia's nicely restrained on these sides – more evocative than usual, on a set list that includes "Down In The Depths On the Ninetieth Floor", "Lonely Woman", "Imagination", "Can't You Just See Yourself", "Comes Love", and "What Is There To Say". ✨✧ Shelly ManneBoss Sounds! (Koch pressing) ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Shelly Manne's best records of the 60s – largely because the group's so great! Altoist Frank Strozier was playing with Shelly at the time, and his rich talents on the alto make the record almost worth seeking out for him alone – because here, Strozier's opening up his sound a lot more than in the early days – and going for strange phrasings, sharp edges, and other unusual twists that really add a lot more spice to the set than you might expect! The rest of the group features Conte Candoli, Russ Freeman, and Monty Budwig – and in a way, the record takes off from the energy of Shelly's classic Blackhawk sessions, but with even a bit more tightly dynamic sound. Titles include "Frank's Tune", "You Name It", "Margie", and "Idle One". CD

✨✧ Randy WestonAfrican Cookbook (Koch pressing) ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, Mid 60s/1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer album of African-tinged jazz – recorded privately by Randy Weston in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records! The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments – and at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably because of its progressive nature – but really flowing out with a rich Africanist inspiration, and served up with even sharper modern edges than before! His group here includes Big Black on congas, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Ray Copeland on trumpet – and Copeland also arranged all the tracks, transforming a few older numbers with the bolder spirit of the session. Titles include "Niger Mambo", "African Cookbook", "Portrait Of Vivian", and Weston's classic "Congolese Children". CD

Art FarmerTo Sweden With Love ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1964. Used ... $7.99
A really unique little album that features jazz versions of themes from Swedish folk music – all served up by a sublime quartet that features Art Farmer on flugelhorn and Jim Hall on guitar! The exploration of folk roots in jazz is not a new one – and a number of the postwar Swedish modernists were especially strong in their love of folk music for inspiration. But the genre's never been handled this well before, and Farmer's warmly lyrical sensibilities really transform the tunes – opening up a timeless sense of expression in their melodies, yet still keeping things strongly in a modern jazz vein with his timing and phrasing. The other members of the piano-less quartet certainly help in this respect – Steve Swallow on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – and Jim Hall's guitar is always a treat in a stripped-down session like this. The sound of the record is both warm and eerie at the same time – and titles include "Va Da Du?", "De Salde Sina Hemman", "Kristallen Den Fina", and "Visa Vid Midsommartid". CD

Clare Fischer Big BandThesaurus ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1968. Used ... $6.99
An unusual session from the great Clare Fischer – although probably his best-known record as well! Clare cut many other jazz sides in a smaller, more intimate setting – but this album features his full talents as a larger arranger – working with a hip ensemble, and turning in some great charts that really keep things on edge! Fischer plays both Fender Rhodes and piano – and the group's got some great west coast help from Bill Perkins and Warne Marsh on tenors, Gary Foster on alto, and Conte Candoli on trumpet – all playing with a bit more sharpness here than usual. There's a nicely off-kilter edge – similar to that which you might hear in some of Clare's work with Cal Tjader – or some of his larger arranging projects for labels like MPS. Solos are out front on all tracks, and titles include "In Memoriam", "Bitter Leaf", "Calamus", and "Miles Behind". CD

James Blood UlmerMusic Speaks Louder Than Words – Blood Plays Ornette Coleman ... CD
Koch, 1995. Used ... $11.99
James Blood Ulmer does a nice job here with the music of Ornette Coleman – no surprise, considering what a big influence Ornette was on Ulmer's music! And although Ulmer's harmelodic styles of the 80s are what first brought him great fame, the album's actually got a much more open approach to Ornette – one that still has rhythms from the old days, but which also shows Coleman's later love of tone and musical energy – sparkling nicely here between a lineup that includes Calvin Jones on acoustic bass, Amin Ali on electric bass, Michael Mustafa Ulmer on keyboards, and either Rashied Ali or Aubrey Dale on drums. Ulmer sings a bit on the record, with bluesy tones that are somewhat surprising – and titles include "Rap Man", "Skies Of America", "Sphinx", "Lonely Woman", "Cherry Cherry", and "I Can't Take It Anymore". George WallingtonKnight Music ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1957. Used ... $9.99
Great work from bop legend George Wallington – one of the last records in an initial run of 50s strengths from the pianist – and a set that features some great original compositions of his own! The set's a bit unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – almost more of a Prestige or Blue Note-styled date – as Wallington's loose, open, and really hits his groove – working alongside Teddy Kotick on bass and Nick Stabulis on drums, both players whose understated approach lets Wallington sparkle even more in the spotlight. The complexity of his performance is wonderful – even while swinging – and titles include "World Weary", "Billie's Tune", "Godchild", "Serendipity", and "Up Jumped The Devil". CD

Koch/Atlantic, 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning early work from trumpeter Ted Curson – a record that's got as much soul and rock-solid power as you'd guess from the image on the cover! Ted's working here in the company of his frequent partner from the early days – tenorist Bill Barron – and together, they come up with a riveting sound that rivals the genius of early 60s work from Charles Mingus or Booker Ervin – with a similar blend of sharp edges, tight rhythms, and in the pocket soul! The rest of the group features Georges Arvanitas on piano – making a rare American appearance – plus Herb Bushler on bass and Dick Berk on drums. Titles include the classic "Straight Ice", plus "Reava's Waltz", "Elephant Walk", and "Nublu". CD

Merle Haggard's affectionate 1969 tribute to the genius of Jimmie Rodgers. For all of his rough, outlaw ways and reactionary moods – particularly in the immediate years after Okie from Muskogee – Merle was also deeply sensitive and respectful of his influences. His voice was never sweeter than on this CD of Rodgers tunes – despite the fact the Merle's genius pen didn't write any of the tunes here, this may still be his masterpiece. All of the songs and narration tracks from the original LP are here – 25 in all. CD

Atco/Koch, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Roland Hanna's certainly easy to love here – working in a free-flowing trio mode, with a fair bit more soul jazz touches than on some of his later work! Rhythm here is from Ben Tucker on bass and Roy Barnes on drums – both of whom bring in a gentle little groove that augments the more rhythmic side of Hanna's piano – taking his warmer lyrical flow, and giving it a nice sense of focus, especially on some of the standards on the set. Titles include Tucker's original "Farouk Thelonious", plus "From This Day On", "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Night In Tunisia", "Easy To Love", and "It Never Entered My Mind". CD

✨✧ Joe Harriott Double QuintetIndo-Jazz Suite ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost classic from reedman Joe Harriott – and a landmark blending of jazz and world music! The core of the group is that quintet of West Indian alto player Joe Harriott – one of the leading lights of the British jazz scene of the 60s, and a dedicated modernist who was as important to England as Ornette Coleman was to America. Harriott's group is expanded by the addition of John Mayer's quintet of Indian musicians, who play in tandem with Harriott's group in a swirling blend of styles and sounds. The sound is spacey and trippy, with more elements of Indian music, than of jazz, but Harriott still manages to get some nice playing in. The whole album is one long suite of tracks, and titles include "Contrasts", "Raga Megha", and "Raga Gaud-Saranga". CD

✨✧ Eddie HarrisFor Bird And Bags ... CD
Exodus/Vee Jay/Koch, Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem – with early work by the great Charles Stepney! As you might guess from the title, the record is ostensibly a tribute to Charlie Parker and Milt Jackson – but that's just on the surface, because there's a lot more going on here than simple boppish stuff. In reality, the session's a tasty batch of complicated tracks by Harris – one of the last that he ever cut for Vee Jay, and one that features him playing with some great Chicago players like Charles Stepney and Willie Pickens. The album has a version of Harris' "The River Nile", a sinister African-tinged track that shows him pushing the envelope into a wild exotic groove. Other nice moments include the theme to "Checkmate", plus "Samba De Orfeu", and "Salute To Bags", which has Eddie soloing on piano! CD

✨✧ Milt Jackson & Coleman HawkinsBean Bags ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really work nicely with the album's slight Latin inflections – a bit like those you might hear on some of Hawkins' Impulse Records material from the same generation. Milt Jackson's vibes are great too – chromatic and edgey, and set up with rhythm support from Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Titles include "Indian Blues", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Sandra's Blues", "Stuffy", and "Close Your Eyes". CD

✨✧ Teddy CharlesWord From Bird ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
A richly complex album from vibist Teddy Charles – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and certainly one with the boldest sound! The groups here are filled with hip players – all working under Charles' direction in a set of tracks that shimmers with dark sounds and moody colors – often as textural as it is jazz-based – with a level of sophistication that goes beyond even Charles key modernist work from the early 50s. Teddy's on vibes, alongside Art Farmer on trumpet, Eddie Bert on trombone, Hal Stein on alto, Don Butterfield on tuba, George Barrow on baritone, Hall Overton on piano, and Jimmy Raney on guitar – and while some tracks feature a tentet, 4 of the album's numbers feature a smaller quartet with Charles Mingus on bass! Titles include the 10 minute composition "Word From Bird" – plus "Blue Greens", "Laura", "Showtime", and "Just One Of Those Things". CD

✨✧ Buster SmithLegendary Buster Smith ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare return to recording for alto player Buster Smith – captured here in a setting that's even sharper than before! Smith has roots that go back to the 30s bands of Bennie Moten and Andy Kirk – but he also was an early boss of Charlie Parker, who claimed to be strongly influenced by his alto – and you can definitely hear Buster take off in a few Bird-like flights during the set! The groove is mostly older swing-based jazz, yet there's a sharper edge too – and certainly an understanding of bop that informs the solos. Buster's tone is incredible throughout – deeply personal, and very soulful – and titles include "Late Late", "Organ Grinder's Swing", "King Alcohol", and "Kansas City Blues". CD
