VariousGipsy Rhumba – The Original Rhythm Of Gipsy Rhumba In Spain 1965 to 1974 (yellow vinyl pressing – with download) (2023 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On April 22, 2023
One of the coolest collections of music we've ever heard from the folks at Soul Jazz Records – and a batch of work that we never would have heard otherwise! The sounds here are from a unique point in Spanish music – one in which flamenco guitar mixed with Latin rhythms, gypsy culture, and even traces of postwar jazz and rock and roll – all to form one of the most vibrant musical blends we've ever heard! There's a live energy to this music right from the start, but the tracks also really benefit a lot from tight studio production too – which helps to bring all these disparate parts into strong focus when moving together – with a sense of energy that's really mindblowing. Forget any later Gipsy Kings or coffee bar cliches you might have, because this early music is definitely the real deal – and presented beautifully in this lavish package. Titles include "Nuestro Ayer" by Rabbit Rumba, "Si Compay" by El Nois, "El Pan Y Los Dietes" by El Piano De Chaco Y Sus Rumbas, "Levantate" by Antinio Gonzalez, "Che Camino" by Maruja Garrido, "La Fiesta No Es Para Feos" by Peret, and "Fui A Bahia" by El Gitano Portugues. (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Sunday, April 23. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Saturday, April 22. It will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, after 7:00am on April 23 we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online.) LP, Vinyl record album

Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
The roots of British mod, served up here in a fantastic package that's overflowing with soulful, jazzy, and groovy gems that we might never have heard otherwise! The big British Invasion love of American sounds is no secret to anyone – but the cuts here are all from a moment before on the London scene, and represent some really wonderful experiments in ways of mixing together elements of jazz, soul, and blues – and coming up with something really fresh and unique! Tracks are a great mix of instrumental and vocal modes – and as usual with Ace, they're supported by detailed notes that really open up our understanding of both the music, and this point in time. Titles include "Danger Man" by Red Price Combo, "A New Kind Of Lovin" by Eden Kane, "Christine" by Miss X, "Sugar Baby (parts 1 & 2)" by Jimmy Powell, "When You Walked Out" by Alex Murray, "Chicago Calling" by Cyril Davies & His Rhythm & Blues All Stars, "King Of Kings" by Jimmy Cliff, "It Ain't Necessarily So" by Duffy Power, "Gurney Slade" by Max Harris, "Moanin" by Lynn Cornell, "I'm Just A Baby" by Louis Cordet, "Orange Street" by The Blue Flames, "Strawberry Fair" by Anthony Newley, "Sounds Like Locomotion" by Sounds Inc, and "Air Travel" by Chris Farlowe. VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD

Jasmine (UK), 1950s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really well-done dip into the New York City blues scene of the 50s – one that presents a wealth of work we might not have heard otherwise, pulled from labels that include Old Town, Harlem, Jax, Wing, Dog, and Groove! There's a nice mix of material here that really shows the way the city was able to act as a crossroads for styles that were not necessarily homegrown, but could certainly find a home in its diverse community – as some cuts have more of a rural bent, others have some of the more electrified touches that were coming into urban blues, and a few have some of the jump/jazz styles of the R&B generation. Titles include "No Help Wanted", "I Believe You Got A Sidekick", "Bicycle Boogie", "Operator", "Slow Down Baby", "Paper Lady", and "Rip & Run" by Bob Gaddy; "You Better Heed My Warning", "Please Tell Me", "Feelin All Right", "No Tellin What I'll Do", and "What Your Love Means To Me" by Larry Dale; "A Letter To Lightnin Hopkins", "Worrying Over You", "Bluebird Bluebird", and "My Confession" by Brownie McGhee – and more by Cousin Leroy, Alonzo Scales, and Paul Williams too. A treasure trove of spiritual jazz from saxophonist Idris Ackamoor – featuring his famous 70s recordings with The Pyramids, solo material, and even some previously unissued titles! The bulk of the collection comes from The Pyramids' albums Birth Speed Merging, Lalibela, and King Of Kings – all freely creative records that build upon traditions initiated by the AACM in Chicago, and taken further groups like The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Human Arts Ensemble, or Oneness Of Juju. Many tracks build freely from earthy percussion, bits of vocals, and spiraling solos on saxes and flute – with a sound that's incredibly soulful and righteous – very positive and progressive, and easily some of the best work of this nature from the time! 2CD set features Pyramids tracks "The Land Of Eternal Song (part 3)", "Mohgo Naba", "Queen Of The Spirits (part 3)", "Black Man Of The Nile", "Aomawa", "The River Ganges", and "Masenko Nights" – plus "Spiritual Rebirth", "Centurian", "Topanga", "Cubana", and "Africa" by Idris Ackamoor; as well as "The Shepherd's Tune" by The Collective. ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald/Ramsey Lewis/Jimmy Smith/Kenny BurrellVerve Wishes You A Swinging Christmas (Swinging Christmas/Sound Of Christmas/Christmas 64/Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas) (180 gram 4LP set) ... LP
Verve, Mid 60s. New Copy 4LP ... Out Of Stock
Four Christmas classics in one package – two from Verve, two from Chess Records! First up is the album Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! The Sound Of Christmas album by Ramsey Lewis is a classic – and probably one of the best-selling Christmas jazz albums of all time! Ramsey and his classic trio with Redd Holt and Eldee Young serve up a tight set of grooves based around Holiday favorites like "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Winter Wonderland", "Here Comes Santa Claus", "The Christmas Song", and "Sleigh Ride" – and also carve out a few nice originals like "Christmas Blues" and "The Sound Of Christmas". Side one features the trio on its own, and side two features added arrangements by Riley Hampton – swirling around to expand the groove even more! Christmas 64 – also issued as Christmas Cookin – is as cookin a Christmas album as you'll ever find! Jazz organ giant Jimmy Smith works with Billy Byers to craft some sublime instrumentals that have his Hammond interpreting Christmas classics like "We Three Kings", "White Christmas", "Silent Night", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". If you know Jimmy from the time, you know that he can really make tracks like these groove nicely – and take them to places you never expected! Last up is the album Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas, from guitarist Kenny Burrell – on which he grooves nicely and gently over arrangements by Richard Evans, perfectly crafted in that soul jazz mode of his 60s work for Chess – not Kenny's most challenging format, to be sure, but proof that he often works better in a more structured environment than a freer one. Titles include "Away In A Manger", "My Favorite Things", "Little Drummer Boy", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "Merry Christmas Baby", and "Go Where I Send Thee". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ramsey Lewis TrioMore Sounds Of Christmas ... LP
Argo/Verve, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Ramsey Lewis had such great success with his first album of Christmas instrumentals for Chess Records, he soon hopped back in the studio for a second record – but one with a very distinct difference! This time around, the trio's a bit unusual – in that it features regular bassist Eldee Young, but also the great Steve McCall on drums – a percussionist who'd later really flourish in the 70s, and gain great fame for his work in the group Air! The presence of McCall is no surprise, though – Malachi Favors and Muhal Richard Abrams also make appearances on early 60s Chess jazz albums – but it does give the record a nicely special sort of sound, as does the added instrumentation on some tracks too. About half the set features the trio, and the rest features a bigger group that's arranged by King Fleming and Will Jackson – jazz trio with a bit of strings, including some nice harp, and a touch of trombone from John Avant. Titles include "We Three Kings", "Snowfall", "Plum Puddin", "Little Drummer Boy", "Snowbound", "Egg Nog", and "Jingle Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

The best album of Christmas jazz you could ever buy! Why? Well, the record's totally hip – with way more going on than just the usual jazz versions of Christmas carols. But unlike other hip Christmas albums, this one also never loses the feeling of the season – and although the work is a bit more challenging than usual for a holiday album, it also always swings, and in a very festive style! This CD mixes together music from both the original Jingle Bell Jazz album and the classic God Rest Ye Merry Jazzmen album from the 70s – but leaves off some tracks from the former to make room for the latter. Titles include "Deck The Halls" by Herbie Hancock, "Blue Xmas" by Bob Dorough and Miles Davis, "Jingle Bells" by Duke Ellington, "We Three Kings" by Wynton Marsalis, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Paquito D'Rivera, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Dexter Gordon, "White Christmas" by Lionel Hampton, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by McCoy Tyner, and "Deck Us All With Boston Charlie" by Lambert Hendricks & Ross. Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
A great double header from Honest Jons – a 2CD set that brings together volumes 7 and 8 of their London Is The Place For Me series! Volume 7 is first – a fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Volume 8 features a huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Titles include "No More Taxi", "Food From The West Indies", "Come Back In The Morning", "Pirates Of Paria", "Drink A Rum", "If You Brown", "Life Begins At Forty", "Mistress Jacob", "Africa My Home", "Kitch In The Jungle", "Tie Tongue Mopsie", and "London Is The Place For Me". Fresh Sound (Spain), 1962. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare bossa jazz from the start of the 60s – two great albums on a single CD! First up is Jazza Nova by Paulo Alencar – an amazing lost bossa jazz session recorded in Brazil, but issued here in the US by Atlantic! Paulo Alencar's group is supposedly filled with "all stars" – and even though they're not actually named, the record's got this fantastic jazzy vibe throughout – very much like some of the new experiments in bossa and samba jazz from some of the bigger names of the time – including the larger combo recordings by the young, pre-Brasil 66 Sergio Mendes! Fast rhythms and jazzy solo work throughout – on titles that include "West Samba", "It's Really Bossa", "Bossa No 2", "Where Was I", "Hello, America", and "Zirigidoom". Next is the album Cool Samba – a very nice album of bossa instrumentals, released in the US under the obscure name of "Joao & His Bossa Kings". Joao is listed on the label as Joao Meirelles – also known as JT Meirelles on his more famous Brazilian recordings – and we wonder if Battle gave him the name of "Joao" to make folks think he was Joao Gilberto, who was selling a lot of records at the time! Whatever the case, though, this is a great album of tight little bossa jazz tracks – served up with small combo instrumentation that includes alto, flute, piano, trumpet, and percussion. Titles include "Nacao Nago", "Solucao", "So Danco Samba", "Samba Toff", "Samba Sem Nome", and "Essa Nega Sem Sandalia". CD features the bonus track "Moeda Quebrada" by Paulo Alencar. CD

A really great idea for a record – and one that echoes the same "E & F" mode that Makaya McCraven brought to his previous album! The approach here is as unique as the drummer himself – in that McCraven went back to the sessions for the core album, and pulled out material that's recast into a completely different record altogether – not a remix project, or a batch of alternate takes – but new music from the ground up, as Makaya continues his groundbreaking style of using live jazz performance as the basis for a record that's eventually cut-up and reassembled! Performances were recorded in Chicago, Cali, Brooklyn, and London – with players who include Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Dezron Douglas on bass, Ashley Henry on Fender Rhodes, Nubya Garcia on tenor, Jeff Parker on guitar, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on violin, Carlos Nino on percussion, Junius Paul on bass, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor – an amazing lineup that gets plenty of space to shine in the hands of Makaya. A full three albums by the legendary Pyramids – all packaged together in one complete set, with an unreleased bonus album too! The Pyramids recorded three key records during the 70s – each of them an underground classic, all served up in a wonderful bit of spiritual soul jazz with a really cosmic feel! The group are heavy on percussion and reeds – blending congas and assorted other percussion instruments with soprano sax, alto, and flute – all in a captivating sound that builds up nicely over the course of the album's two long tracks! The music is very organic – never too forced, nor never too far out – and there's a majestic quality to the whole thing, one that really lives up to the group's name and image on the cover. And although the ensemble hail from Ohio – hardly a spot you'd peg for spiritual jazz in the 70s – they're a key link between the early 70s avant movements in Chicago and St Louis, some of the hip grooves in Detroit's Tribe Records scene, and the growing loft jazz movement in New York. The reeds are especially nice – alto sax from Idris Ackamoor and flute from Margo Ackamoor – and all other group members play percussion, and vocalize too – singing along with some of the tunes in chanting, chorus formation, which adds an even further element of soul to the mix. Includes the full albums Lalibela, King Of Kings, and Birth Speed Merging – plus the rare album Live At KQED, recorded by the group in 1975! Great package – features the full albums, plus a 32 page booklet of new notes and rare photos! CD

The first album from Steely Dan, and a really nice chapter in their career – one that's maybe a bit less iconic than the late 70s records, but in a way that really keeps things interesting! There's definitely less jazz and polish than on the later albums – but already, the group are writing the kinds of songs that nobody ever seemed to pen before, and which few other groups could match later – despite the countless legions who tried! The guitars are all nice and strong – that sharp Skunk Baxter edge that helped get the group firmly onto the charts right away – on titles that include their classic singles "Do It Again" and "Reelin In The Years", the oft-showcased "Dirty Work", and other cuts that include "Kings", "Midnite Cruiser", "Only A Fool Would Say That", "Fire In The Hole", "Brooklyn Owes The Charmer Under Me", "Change Of The Guard", and "Turn That Heartbeat Over Again". Mars Williams presents a great installment in this surprisingly long-running series – a really unusual mix of Christmas songs with the avant jazz inspiration of Albert Ayler – served up here in two different performances – one recorded in Chicago, the other in New York! As with the previous volumes, there's a stunning mix of sounds going on – some of the sentiment you might get in a Holiday tune, which seems to open up the more human corners of Ayler music – which includes snippets of "Spirits", "The Truth Is Marching In", "Omega", and "Change Has Come" – folded together with Christmas themes on these beautiful long improvisations! The Chicago group features Williams on saxes and toy instruments – plus Josh Berman on cornet, Jim Baker on piano and viola, Kent Kessler on bass, Brian Sandstrom on bass and guitar, and Steve Hunt on drums – and the New York group features Steve Swell on trombone, Hilliard Greene on bass, Chris Corsano on drums, Nels Cline on guitar, and Fred Lonberg Holm on cello. Geoff MuldaurIs Having A Wonderful Time/Motion ... CD
Reprise/BGO (UK), 1975/1976. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Two solo albums from Geoff Muldaur – recorded long after his jug band years, and his earlier sets with wife Maria! First up is Geoff Muldaur Is Having A Wonderful Time – a striking solo album from Geoff Muldaur – a record that draws on all the many different sounds and styles he brought to records through the 60s and early 70s, but which also adds in a stronger jazz impulse overall! Each track on the record has a slightly different spirit, which makes the whole thing feel more like a continuation of the experimental, open style of putting albums together that Warner/Reprise was so great at a few years before – as Muldaur sings with backings from a jazz group on one track, a string orchestra on another, a funk group on a third, and a roots rock combo on another – with players as diverse as Merle Saunders on electric piano, Doc Cheatham on trumpet, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Harold Vick on tenor. Joe Boyd produced – one of the few folks who might be able to successfully handle such a range – and titles include "Higher & Higher", "99 1/2", "Livin In The Sunlight", "I Want To Be A Sailor", "Tennessee Blues", "High Blood Pressure", and "Wondering Why". Motion is a set that's a bit tighter than some of the earlier work of Geoff Muldaur – a set that maybe has the well-trained singer moving into territory that's almost verging on AOR, yet which still hangs on to some of the wit of his earlier records as well! There's still some key traces of 70s Warner going on here – including a few songs by Allen Toussaint, and one with Martin Mull – which help balance out some of the more direct, tuneful numbers, and continue to provide some of the more offbeat qualities that made Geoff such an interesting sideways talent in the mainstream music world. Tracks include "Motion", "Let It Out", "I Don't Want To Talk About It", "When You Touch Me This Way", "Why Don't We Live Together", and a version of "Southern Nights". CD

A beautiful album by one of our favorite jazz singers! Lorez Alexandria is in a perfect setting here – singing with subtly sophisticated backings that really let her take charge, and direct the songs tightly with her incredibly soulful vocals! Instrumentation is mostly in a small combo mode – with the Wynton Kelly trio at the core, augmented by a bit of guitar from Ray Crawford, and some alto sax from Paul Horn – and although the album's got an easygoing feel, it also keenly shows the tightness that's always made Lorez so great! Styles are a blend of soul and jazz, plus just a hint of bossa, heard beautifully on the album's rendition of "O Barquinho". Incredible work from the amazing Dorothy Ashby – a brilliant set of funky and spiritual tunes, set to full backings from Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans! This album is easily one of Ashby's greatest, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam – one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s, clearly opened up in a way that's not unlike the direction of Alice Coltrane's work, but a lot more focused and a lot more funky! Ashby not only plays her usual jazz harp, but also koto as well, and even sings a bit too – and the larger group directed by Evans features work by Stu Katz on vibes and kalimba, Lenny Druss on flutes, and Cash McCall on guitar – all in a groove that's really a precursor to the Earth Wind & Fire generation of the Chicago scene! Titles include the amazing break "The Moving Finger" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", "Wax & Wane", "Shadow Shapes", "For Some When Young", "Myself When Young", and "Drink". Gambit (Spain), 1955/1956/1960. Used ... $11.99
A treasure trove of early work by Betty Carter – key early sessions from the 50s, all packaged together on one CD! The bulk of the collection – the "Ray Bryant" and "Gigi Gryce" components – features Carter's work for Epic in the mid 50s, sides recorded for the album Meet Betty Carter & Ray Bryant, plus other rare ones that were later collected on the Social Call album! The set features some sublime tunes arranged by Gigi Gryce – with a floating jazzy style that works perfectly with Betty's incredible voice – plus others with backings by Ray Bryant's combo, and a few more that feature Ray's group playing without Betty's vocals. Betty's voice is already fantastic – even at this early point in her career – with an amazing range of expression, and a jazz-based approach that's different from most of her generation. Titles include "Social Call", "Thou Swell", "Frenesi", "Run Away", "Tell Him I Said Hello", "Can't We Be Friends", "Sneaking Around", and "Let's Fall In Love". Added to these is material from the album The Modern Sound Of Betty Carter – a 1960 session recorded with large group arrangements by Richard Wess, and a nicely swinging, easily jazzy feel! The album is one of Carter's more obscure sessions, and it's one of the few from the old days to really capture her jazzy vocals well in a large group setting. As always, Betty handles the material with a great deal of class, and an incredible sense of poise and emotion. The set list is nice, too, and includes many lesser-known tracks – like "For You", "Jazz (Ain't Nothin' But Soul)", "Don't Weep For the Lady", "My Reverie", and "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire". A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an important distinction to the way the album progresses.) Evans' arrangements have a majesty that takes the songs to the next level – working them as lush, lively backings for Davis' equally majestic trumpet solos, some of the finest he ever recorded with large group backing. Columbia/BGO (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
A pair of Columbia classics from trumpeter Maynard Ferguson – back to back on a single CD! First up is an album titled Ballad Style, but there's no sleepy ballads here – thanks to hip backings from British arranger Keith Mansfield – who also worked with Maynard Ferguson on some of his MF Horn sessions! As with other work of the time, Mansfield manages to keep things moving along nicely, even when mellow – and he mixes his own arrangements with orchestrations conducted by Alan Moorehouse that have some of the groovier touches of late 60s Brit Easy – even a very slight hint of a groove at the bottom of some tunes. The music is definitely in a ballad mode, but never as sleepy as you might think – and titles include "Girl Talk", "Born Free", "You Only Live Twice", "Sound Of Silence", "As Long As He Needs Me", and "The Impossible Dream". Alive & Well is equally groovy – funky big band material at its best – with hard-grooving arrangements from Brit talents who include John Cameron, Kenny Wheeler, and Keith Mansfield – all of whom mix together key elements of sound library funk with enough pure jazz to make Maynard sound great throughout. Tunes include some great groovy covers – "Move Over", "Aquarius", "My Sweet Lord", "Your Song", and "Living In The Past" – plus Mansfield's own "The Serpent". CD

A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. John RenbournUnpentangled – The Sixties Albums (There You Go/John Renbourn/Bert & John/Another Monday/Watch The Stars/Sir John A Lot Of/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Transatlantic/Cherry Tree (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 6CD ... $32.99 50.99
A treasure trove of greatness from British folk rock legend John Renbourn – all of his late 60s solo work, done before moving on to greater fame in Pentangle! First up is There You Go – a rare one from singer Dorris Henderson and future Pentangle founder John Rensbourn! Florida born, LA raised singer Dorris Henderson moved to London in 1965 and was soon singing London's folk clubs, where she met Rensbourn. A solid mix of traditionals and then contemporary folk songs – stripped down and honest takes on "Saly Free And Easy", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Mr Tamborine Man", "Going To Memphis", Something Lonesome", "Mist On The Mountain" and more. This edition includes bonus tracks from a rare 45 – "Hangman" and "Leaves That Are Green". Next is the self-titled John Renbourn from 1965 – a set that would not only establish John's legacy for years to come, but also have a very strong impact upon the role of the guitar on the British scene too! The album's definitely in a mode that owes something to an American folk legacy – but it also really breaks from the past with unusual phrasings and colorings in Renbourn's guitar – certainly with an ear towards ancient English modes, but also at once very fresh and contemporary – a strong precursor to the waves of new acoustic talents that would flow from the UK a few years later, but maybe even more revolutionary – given that John's mostly just working here with his guitar and voice. Bert Jansch adds guitar to a few tracks – and titles include "Song", "Down On The Barge", "Plainsong", "Judy", "Beth's Blues", "Blue Bones", "Train Tune", "Winter Is Gone", and "Noah & Rabbit". Bert & John is a hell of a collaboration between British legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn – both working here together to completely redefine the sound of their music for the generation to come! This one album may well hold all the sense of subtle power and possibility that was about to flower in the Brit movement often known as "acid folk" – that reworking of older aesthetics with modern conceptions, and doing so mostly with their work on acoustic guitar – quite a feat, given the stripped-down instrumentation of the set! Bert sings a bit – in that incredible style of his – but the real attraction here is the guitar interplay, which is always fresh, never hokey, neither familiar American folk nor forced singer-songwriter backup material. Titles include a wonderful reworking of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" – plus "Red's Favourite", "Orlando", "Soho", "Piano Tune", "East Wind", "After The Dance", and "The Time Has Come". Another Monday is maybe the most obscure album in the collection – a set that is mostly instrumental, with some completely fantastic work by Renbourn on guitar – but which also features a bit of guest vocals from singer Jacqui McShee – whose warmer presence next to John really makes for a nice pairing. The album's as powerful as it is subtle, really beautiful in its sense of variety – with titles that include "Buffalo", "One For William", "Lost Lover Blues", "Another Monday", "Day At The Seaside", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", and "Waltz". Watch The Stars is another great collaboration with Dorris Henderson – an American singer, but one who moved to London in the 60s – where she cut this rare gem with guitarist John Renbourn! The album's got a righteous vibe that's hipper than the usual folk set – with some traditional tunes and some contemporary material – recorded with that amazing phrasing that made Renbourn's guitar so distinct right from the start, with lots of those jazzy currents we love so much – and which really fit the creative vocal approach of Henderson! Dorris also plays some autoharp, and there's a bit of bass in the backings – although overall the main focus here is on Renbourn's guitar and Henderson's vocals. Titles include "Come Up Horsey", "God Bless The Child", "Watch The Stars", "30 Days In Jail", "Mosaic Patterns", "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", and "There's Anger In This Land". Sir John A Lot Of is perhaps one of the best-known albums from British guitar legend John Renbourn – as it was issued widely in the US, and kept in print for a surprisingly long time over the years! The approach here is slightly different than Renbourn's previous records – a bit in the image presented by the cover, although with maybe not as slavish a sound – as John just uses the whole thing to go a bit more ancient than before, in ways that echo the time travel that the whole British folk scene was taking as the 70s approached. The tunes are done in ways that are really beautiful – still lots of the incredible guitar work that made Renbourn such a standout on the scene – plus flute from jazzman Ray Warleigh, who's very different here than usual – and spare use of finger cymbals, African drums, and glockenspiel by Terry Cox. Titles include "Morgana", "Transfusion", "The Trees They Do Grow High", "Sweet Potato", "Seven Up", and "White Fishes". 6CD box features all records in original artwork sleeves, with a booklet of notes – and bonus tracks that include "Message To Pretty", "The Waggoner's Lad", "Lucky Thirteen", "Blues Run The Game", "The Wildest Pig In Captivity (alt)", "Can't Keep From Crying", "Transfusion (alt)", and "The Leaves Are Green". The second great session from two of Verve's biggest jazz stars of the 60s – organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery – an unlikely pair, to be sure, but one who work great together on the set! The real change here is in Wes' playing – as it's shifted from the mellower style used over larger backings on most of his Verve sets, back to the rootsier soul jazz tone of his earliest recordings from his days on the Indianapolis scene. Jimmy and Wes are working with a core combo that includes Grady Tate on drums and Ray Barretto on conga – making for a lean organ/guitar groove that's only got percussion to kick it along. Wilson's approach was always tuned more towards the late 50s/early 60s scene than the present one – and her work is often done with a sort of imagined past – not entirely retro, as she'll mix influences from late 60s soul with a more powdered-up sense of style from earlier in the decade – almost always set to great backings from Tot Taylor, who was a very similar aesthetic presence on the scene – and who recorded most of this material for his own Compact Organization label! At a time when some folks were staging a mod revival, Mari was setting her sights a few years before, and often with bigger arrangements and a nice current of jazz – occasionally camp, but usually right on the money. This 3CD set is the first retrospective of her music we've seen – and it features her full album Showpeople, plus 25 bonus tracks from singles and compilations – plus another 16 tracks that are all new remixes from 2022 of her earlier work. As usual with Cherry Red, the whole thing is very well done – with a big booklet of notes and lots more goodies! CD

Gramofonovy Klub (Czech Republic), 1962. Near Mint- ... $24.99 29.99
A really cool set that showcases some of the best talents in the Czech jazz scene at the start of the 60s – a set that features a different soloist on every track – although core backings that link the whole thing together nicely, even as each number allows a strong sense of musical individuality! Most Czech players didn't get the same kind of exposure as other Eastern European jazz musicians – especially not at this early stage – so the set is a really wonderful representation of this near-lost scene, one that has some surprisingly modern touches – more than enough to link it to the best Polish jazz of the time! The set features work by Karel Velebny on vibes, Karel Krautgartner and Frantisek Navaratil on alto sax, Antonin Julina on guitar, Milan Ulirch on tenor, Jaromir Hnilicka on trumpet, and Artur Hollitzer on trombone – and titles include "One Window", "Two Marmots", "Lento", "Suite For Trumpet", "At The Fair Of Lisen", "You", and "Good People Haven't Died Out Yet". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing, in a flipback cover – which has a small rip on the back and some light aging. Cover also has a small mark from an old sticker – but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ Woody HermanChildren Of Lima ... CD
Fantasy/Wounded Bird, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked chapter of the 70s genius of Woody Herman – and the kind of album that shows him continuing to grow strongly, many years after his initial fame! The record takes off ambitiously from some of the funkier Herman sessions of the start of the 70s – and features the core group augmented by the Houston Symphony Orchestra on side one – offering up larger backings to color in the sophisticated sounds of the tunes "Variation On A Scene" and "Children Of Lima", both jazz suites penned by Alan Broadbent, who'd done great work with Herman's group. Side two is back to straighter big band numbers – tunes that burst out with a lot of life and energy, and which have a few of the soulful stylings of Herman's previous funk. Highlights include great covers of "25 Or 6 To 4" and "Where Is The Love", plus a version of Broadbent's driving "Far In". CD

Ubiquity, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The best yet from underground soul force Georgia Anne Muldrow – an artist who has now put out more exceptional music in a handful of years as both artist and producer than many do in a career these days! Kings Ballad is her full length debut for Ubiquity, a record that's as boundlessly creative as anything she's done to date, but with a cohesive sense of soul that could get her over in the mainstream if the mainstream has its ears open! In some ways the record is a consolidation of her styles – from 70s spiritual soul strains, to trunk-rattling hip hop funk, to cosmic jazzy soundscapes, but the songs are really strong and focused on this record without sacrificing the spacey atmosphere. We keep thinking she's gonna peak, but she keeps on raising the bar! Titles include "Indeed", "Doobie Down", "Simple Advice", "Kings Ballad", "RIP", "Thrones", "Summers Love", "Shang-A-Lang", "The Ohh Wee Show", "Chocolate Reign", "Baby Dee", "Live", "Morena Del Ray" and more. A great set of torchy ballads from Lee Wiley – a singer who virtually helped invent the genre on record with her classic sets for Columbia Records! This album's done a few years after those – and features backings by Ralph Burns, who brings a fair bit more sentimental moments to his work here than you might expect from some of his other more modern outings. The proceedings have a nice touch of jazz – thanks to players who include Urbie Green on trombone, Nick Travis on trumpet, and Moe Wechsler on piano – and although Lee's vocals have a slightly aging quality, that only serves to help the fragile emotions of the best numbers in the set. Titles include "You're A Sweetheart", "This Is New", "Who Can I Turn To Now?", "My Ideal", "Limehouse Blues", "I Left My Sugar Standing In The Rain", and "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now". Sunrise, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful, most sophisticated, and most fully-realized sessions from trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson – and a record that features some incredible larger backings from David Amram! The set's a haunting suite dedicated to the children of Vietnam – one that starts out in a darkly brooding mode, but which opens up with some extremely redemptive moments as the set moves on – done in a very spiritual approach to soul jazz that's strongly in the Alice Coltrane tradition! Instrumentation includes a small string group, plus added percussion – and musicians on the set include Art Webb on flute, Richard Davis on bass, Billy Hart on drums, Michael Cochran on piano, and Hannibal himself on both trumpet and koto. The lovely Alpha Johnson sings on a few of the album's tracks, and the whole thing is very warm and deep, and has a lot of variance in tempo and mood, with a strong spiritual feel similar to that of some of the more ambitious Strata East recordings from the time! Titles include "Forest Sunrise", "The Bombing", "Prayer", "Aftermath", and "Finale". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1956. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Dinah Shore's definitely got a bouquet of blues here – thanks to some backings that echo the moody, late nite image on the cover! The set's one of Shore's most blue-hued ever – a surprisingly beautiful little record that features orchestrations from Henri Rene, Frank DeVol, and Harry Zimmerman – all with styles that slightly echo older eras of jazz, but which never get too hokey, or resort to any easy cliches. In a way, there's almost a sharper modern edge going on amidst some of the more traditional modes – and Shore's vocals are a bit part of that, thanks to a wonderful recording style that has them right up front in the mix, coming across with incredible clarity. Titles include "Bouquet Of Blues", "Moanin Low", "Lonesome Gal", "Blues In The Night", "Born To Be Blue", "Memphis Blues", "What Can I Say After I'm Sorry", and "I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good". Joanie's second album for Warner Brothers – and a date that features some especially nice backings from Neal Hefti, who helps swing Sommers into some great jazzy territory, but always with that playful Hefti touch that we love so much! Instrumentation is always interesting, even underneath the vocals – and the record sparkles like some of the better upbeat jazz vocal sides on Capitol from the time – much better than the usual mainstream fare, with kind of a cool California wink at the listener. ✨✧ Charlie ByrdTravellin' Man/Touch Of Gold ... CD
Columbia/Collectables, 1965/1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two mid 60s groovers from Charlie Byrd – both of which represent some key shifts in his work at the time! Travelin Man has Charlie moving away from the bossa and Brazilian jazz of his earlier albums in the 60s – and hitting a groove that's decidedly more folksy – possibly aimed at the younger market, and carried off beautifully by Byrd in his classic acoustic mode. The group's a trio, and has a jazzy bend amidst the folksy modes – and interestingly enough, some of the folksiest tunes on the set are originals from Charlie, and not the sort of older traditional numbers that were making the rounds again in the 60s. Other titles are jazz and film standards – and tracks include "Mama I'll Be Home Someday", "I Will Wait For You", "In The Name Of Love", "I Hear A Rhapsody", "UMMG", "Blues For Felix", and "Travelin Man". Touch Of Gold has the guitar of Charlie Byrd swinging nicely over some larger backings – done in a way that's got traces of 60s soundtrack and bossa styles, but which also brings Byrd into some warmly easy territory as well! The approach is surprisingly great – and although a change from his smaller combo records of earlier years, there's still plenty of room for his guitar in the front of the mix – and a fair bit of jazz on his lines. Arrangements are by Charlie Calello, and occasionally feature a bit of voices in the background – and titles include "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Yesterday", "In My Room", "Lonely Clown", "Walk Right In", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Michelle". The striking debut album from one of the architects of reggae, a musician who cut precious few solo records in his lengthy tenure as the godfather of Jamaican music! A key figure behind the careers of reggae's mega stars like Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, Higgs issued few albums and singles under his own name, but this stellar first album showcases his talent beautifully, with spare, but rich renderings of his soulful approach to roots! Guitar ringer Eric Gale was brought in from the States to accompany Higgs alongside the stellar Now Generation band featuring Earl Wire Lindo, Mikey and Geoffrey Chung and Mickey Boo Richards, but Higgs production and arrangements keep things stripped down and true to the Kingston rootical vibe, rather than jazzing up the proceedings. 12 tracks in all, including "Come On Home", "Got To Make A Way", "Wake Up & Live", "Life Of Contradiction", "Who Brought Down The Curtains", 'Hard Times Don't Bother Me", "My Baby Still Loves Me" and "Song My Enemy Sings". How can we even begin to describe the genius of Lambert Hendricks and Ross? The group was a jazz vocal supergroup that merged three talents that had already made a big name in the bebop vocalese field – Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and the lovely Annie Ross – and the project was an attempt to completely work the emerging vocalese style onto a full-blown jazz group. This album wasn't their first – but it was the first to really break them with the masses, and it's a vocal jazz classic if there ever was one. Backings are by the Ike Isaacs Trio, plus Harry Edison on trumpet – and titles include "Moanin", "Twisted", "Cloudburst", "Everybody's Boppin", and "Sermonette". 70s version of the group's first album for Columbia – Hottest New Group In Jazz – but works fine as a best of! Backings are by the orchestra of Steve Weisberg, who mix in some slightly jazzier moments with the bluesier ones you might expect from Tate – all in a style that opens him up somewhat, and covers some surprising ground with the choice of tunes on the set. Tate's vocals haven't dimmed at all with time, and the production has him right up front in the mix – on titles that include "Hell Is Just A Place On Earth", "Dear Lord", "Louisiana 1927", "Homewrecker", "Close To You", "I'll Be Home", "Left For Dead", "Every Time It Rains", and "Solid Ground". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection that looks at the relationship between American soul and reggae in a very unique way – not the early crossovers of soul and rocksteady in the 60s, but a big wave of disco-inspired sounds in the 70s! The set brings together some great Jamaican and British versions of American club tracks from the late 70s and early 80s, plus some soul cuts from earlier years – often done with rhythms that are slower and more bad-stepping, in a true reggae mode – but with songs and lyrics that are lifted right from bit hits by artists like Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and others! The mix of modes is wonderful – and maybe comes across even better than on some of the Afro disco records of the period – thanks to a great track selection, in the usual Soul Jazz standard. Titles include "I'm Every Woman" by Latisha, "Reggae Beat Goes On" by Family Choice, "Ring My Bell" by Blood Sisters, "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" by Derrick Laro & Trinity, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Black Harmony, "Upside Down" by Carol Cool, "Rappers Delight" by Xanadu & Sweet Lady, and "Be Thankful For What You Got" by One Blood. A treasure trove of rare grooves you've probably never heard before – all pulled from the tiny, but excellent, catalog of Montparnasse 2000, a super-hip French sound library label! Most of these tracks were never issued formally to the public – only recorded to serve as backings in radio, TV, and commercial use – but that doesn't stop them from being some really great funky grooves, especially as most of them were performed by some of France's best funky jazzmen of the time! There's a sweet 70s groove that bubbles through the whole set – lots of funky drums, choppy guitar, sweet keyboards, and other classic instrumental touches – and since the Montparnasse catalog has been virtually untapped until now, nearly every track is super-fresh to our ears! Titles include "Turn In Around" by Willy Albimoor, "SOS 17" by Guy Pedersen, "Violence" by Caiage, "OK Richard" by Sylvano Santorio, "Don't Be Cool" by Jacky Giordano, "Danger" by Rene Costy, "Grand Roque" by Maurice Vander, "Vision Pop" by JJ Rober & JM Guise, and "Catalepsy" by Eric Framond. A landmark record – not only in the career of Grady Tate, but in the realm of adult vocals as well! Grady's incredible here – cool, classy, and amazingly stepping from the role of being a simple jazz drummer, into a world of sophisticated vocals that really caught the world by surprise. The backings are lush, but light – as cooly poised as Grady's own vocals, and still able to hit the right amounts of soulfulness to make the tunes come across with a sound that was quite different than the usual adult pop record of the time. The whole thing's an amazing mix of jazz, soul, and vocals – set to arrangements by Gary McFarland and Mike Abene, and supported by wonderful backings from Jerome Richradson. Includes the sublime "Sack Full Of Dreams", a swirling track that sounds a lot like Scott Walker to us – plus Grady's classic reading of "Windmills Of Your Mine", and the tunes "TNT", "Would You Believe", "All Around The World", and "A Little At A Time". ! The lyrics here are mostly in English, but Anna throws in a few Italian tunes – as was popular at the time, but often done with some of the male pisano singers. Riddle's arrangements have a fragile feel that matches Anna's vocals nicely – more in the late nite mode that he used with Sinatra, and not nearly as jazzy and swinging as his more famous arrangements from the time. King/BGP (UK), 1957. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Incredible early work from Lorez Alexandria – the kind of albums that instantly set her apart from other singers of the 50s, reissued here properly for the first time in years! On This Is Lorez, the singer is working with sublime small combo backings from the group of pianist King Fleming – an unusual Chicago ensemble that includes Wilber Wynn on guitar, Ronald Wilson on flute and oboe, Vernel Fournier on drums, and Audrey Jones on bongos – a musical lineup that brings in a different sort of sophistication to the record, shading tunes with moody colors on flute and oboe that perfectly support Alexandria's soulful and sensitive interpretations of the tunes. The whole thing is pure genius, and a key look at the new levels of sophistication that were bubbling everywhere on the Chicago scene during the years of Jamal and Sun Ra. Lorez Sings Pres follows in a very similar mode – with backing by a Chicago group that again includes King Fleming piano, plus Charles Stepney on vibes, Paul Serrano on trumpet, and Vernel Fournier on drums – an extremely hip lineup that makes the record far more than just the Lester Young tribute promised in the title! But despite the instrumentalists, the real star on all sides is Alexandria – who sings with dark tones and deep colors that go far beyond conventional jazz vocals – all carried off with that slightly breathy mode that was one more unique aspect of her work! CD features all tracks from both albums – a total of 22 titles that include "Snowstorm", "I'm Glad There Is You", "The Sky Is Crying", "I'm Making Believe", "Necessity", "Penthouse Serenade", "DB Blues", "This Year's Kisses", "Easy Living", "No Eyes Blues", "Jumping With Symphony Sid", and a key early reading of "Baltimore Oriole". Fantastic rhythms from percussionist Rubens Bassini – a set that has all the raw live energy of a Latin jazz jam session, but which also carries some of the sweet touches of the bossa nova scene in Brazil – a really wonderful mixing of modes that makes the album a gem all the way through! Rubens plays with the fire you'd expect from his image on the cover – bringing a lot more lively percussion to the record than usual for a Brazilian jazz set of the time – while the larger backings shade things in on some sweet colors – with a nice mix of piano, woodwinds, and some especially great vibes! The record's an excellent jammer that takes a bossa nova groove, and infuses it with some heavier Afro-Cuban rhythms – creating a jazzy style stuffed with infectious changes – on titles that include "Coco Seco", "Barquinho", "Cuban Mambo", "Mirage", "Maria Conga", "Mensagem", "Love For Sale", "Quem Quiser", and "Ceu E Mar". Bolling's piano is always very heavy in the mix – sometimes played with the rhythmic quality of a boogie woogie musician, sometimes more spaciously soundtracked – and augmented by just the right touches of strings. Very groovy bossa tracks – very much in the mode of some of the Verve hit recordings of the mid 60s! After the success of the Astrud Gilberto/Joao Gilberto work with Stan Getz, it's clear that Philips and Luiz Bonfa wanted to get in on the act – and they've paired Bonfa's guitar with vocals from his wife Maria Toledo – a really wonderful singer with very Astrud-like appeal! The album's got some larger backings from Bobby Scott, who brings in a nice undercurrent of jazz – and while some of Bonfa's other work of the time is somewhat spare and dreamy, the style is nicely full here. A dream of a collaboration – the great Nat King Cole in his prime, getting some mighty hip backings from the equally great Quincy Jones – who gives Nat a jazzy push that he wasn't always getting on his Capitol Records sessions of the time! The performance was recorded live in Paris on the same 1960 tour that has given us a few other rare Cole/Jones collaborations – but this one may well be the best of the bunch, as the fidelity is great – with an equal balance on Nat's wonderful vocal phrasing, and all the strongly soulful elements that Quincy brings to the band. Titles include "Tickle Toe", "Lester Leaps In", "Dance Ballerina Dance", "The Continental", "Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", "Route 66", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "Joe Turner's Blues", "Welcome To The Club", "Blues In The Night", and "Thou Swell". Chris ConnorI Miss You So (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1956. Used ... $11.99 14.99
A beautiful title for a beautiful record – one that sums up the subtle sense of sadness that makes the work of Chris Connor so great! There's a sense of longing here that steps out from the very first tune – one that's beautifully moody, without being overindulgent or too emotive. Backings are from larger arrangements by Ray Ellis, but the record also has a light jazzy feel – intimate in approach, with a great sense of balance. Chris' voice is at once personal and removed – a razor's edge of emotion, repressing some impulses, and opening up surprisingly at other moments. Titles include "Mixed Emotions", "I Miss You So", "Go Way From My Window", "I Love You Yes I Do", "Trust In Me", "Past The Age Of Innocence", "Time Out For Tears", "My Heart Is So Full Of You", "My Ideal", "They All Laughed", "Speak Low", and "Radar Blues". Features 4 bonus tracks that include "Under Paris Skies", "Moon Ride", "Invitation", and "I Only Want Some". CD

✨✧ Marlene CordMarlene Cord (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Dot/Universal (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $17.99 21.99
A gem of a set from a singer who should have been much bigger back in the 50s – served up with the same sort of small combo backings you'd get on the Chris Connor albums for Bethlehem! Marlene Cord is a hell of a singer on her own – with a voice that's never hokey, yet full of feeling – and able to inflect things with a knowledge of jazz, but in ways that never go too far over the top – just perfectly balanced with a subtle power that's really amazing. Yet she sounds even better alongside the music on the date – creative Chicago backings from a quartet that features Dick Marx on piano, Johnny Frigo on bass, Mike Simpson on flute, and Jerry Slosberg on drums. The flute's an especially great element – underscoring the vocals with some great blue tones – and titles include "I'm Thru With Love", "I Remember You", "I Got It Bad", "Lights Out", and "This Love Of Mine". ✨✧ Maria CreuzaInterpreta Baden Powell ... CD
Iris (France), 2007. Used ... $4.99
Maria Creuza sings the work of Baden Powell – bringing her own lovely vocals to Baden's classic guitar-driven grooves – all in a mode that's totally sweet throughout! Although mostly bossa in style, the backings here are also a bit modern too – with a fair bit of keyboards alongside guitar from arranger Raymundo Bittencourt – plus light flute, trumpet, sax, and trombone as well – all used sparingly to bring in some slight jazzy touches. Maria's vocals are well-placed – never too emotive to hold down the tunes, yet also not too light as to go without notice, and just be filler inside the instrumentation. Titles include "Samba Triste", "Berimbau", "Tem Do", "Lapinha", "Apelo", "Deixa", "Canto De Ossanha", and "Samba Da Bencao". CD

Wayne DavisWayne Davis ... LP
Black Fire/Strut (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99
A wonderful soul album on the Black Fire label – a hip 70s imprint best known for spiritual jazz – stepping out here on a record that has a lot more vocals than their other releases, but which makes for a mighty nice fit! Wayne Davis is wonderful here – singing with the warmth of a Leroy Hutson at times, and some of the more righteous currents of DJ Rogers at others – often with harmony backings that really elevate the tunes, and a jazzy current in some of the instrumentation that ties things strongly back to the other artists on the Black Fire label! One of those groups, Experience Unlimited, lend their horn section for the record – and Davis himself shows off his deeper musical skills by also handling the piano and keyboards on the record. The whole thing is great – and titles include "Morning", "Things See Just Right Now", "Strive On and Be Strong", "The Garden", "Look at the People", and Al Johnson's "Dawn of a New Day". Doris DayLatin For Lovers (mono/stereo/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Columbia/SFE (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
An expanded 3CD version of Latin For Lovers – one of the best moments from the 60s career of Doris Day – a set that's more bossa than the Latin promised in the title – but in the best way possible! Mort Garson provides the backings, and the tunes have this dreamy, jazzy approach that's quite a change from some of the usual arrangements used for Doris Day – which creates this great space for the singer to slide gently into the tunes – never in a way that's trying to copy Brazilian bossa modes, but which also lets Doris show off some of her more melancholy modes too. Titles include "Be Mine Tonight", "Por Favor", "Dansero", "Meditation", "Fly Me To The Moon", "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars", and "Our Day Will Come". CD1 features the album in stereo, CD2 features the album in mono, and CD3 features "Other Latin Directions" – 18 tracks from mid 60s singles that include "There They Are", "Every Now & Then", "Caprice", "Glass Bottom Boat", "Catch The Bouquet", "Rainbow's End", "Do Not Disturb", "Possess Me", "Everybody Loves A Lover (alt version)", and "Enjoy Yourself – It's Later Than You Think". Martin DennyExotic Moog ... LP
Liberty/Jackpot, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 On April 21, 2023
One of the strangest albums ever from exotica maestro Martin Denny – and one of the coolest as well! The strength of the album is already broadcast by the title – as Denny plays plenty of moog in the record, mixed with his own usual flair for exotic rhythms – expanded slightly by arrangements from Clark Gassman, who really knows how to keep up the pace in a great way. The keyboards have lots of wild sounds, with chirps and flutters that would make Perry & Kingsley proud – and the backing's a bit funkier than usual, with some nice electric basslines to keep the groove coming. Includes a great version of Baden Powell's "Canto De Ossanha", a remake of "Quiet Village", a moody take on "Midnight Cowboy", and a jazzy moogy version of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". ✨✧ Raul DeSouzaSweet Lucy/Don't Ask My Neighbors/Til Tomorrow Comes (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 24.99
A trio of albums from this famous Brazilian trombonist – all of them great! First up is Sweet Lucy – a wonderful album from Raul De Souza, cut during the height of his fame on the California scene! Like Raul's other work for Capitol, this record really sparkles from tight help from George Duke – who handles production, and some of the arrangements – and really helps De Souza find a tight jazzy groove! The instrumentation is a bit leaner than some of Raul's other records of this nature, which is a nice thing – as you get to hear plenty of keyboards from Patrice Rushen, Fender Rhodes from Dawilli Gonga, trumpet from Freddie Hubbard, and percussion from Airto. There's a bit of chorus vocals at times, but the main focus is on Raul's trombone solos – and cuts include of Joao Donato's "Banana Tree", plus "Sweet Lucy", "New Love", "Wild & Shy", "Bottom Heat", "Wires", and "At Will". Don't Ask My Neighbors is a tremendous moment for trombonist Raul De Souza – working here in a style that's light years past his roots in bossa nova! The set's got a heavy California vibe – a late 70s blend of jazz and soul handled by producer George Duke, who also arranges many tracks on the record – but still leaves plenty of room for Raul to step out strongly in the lead! Things are never too overdone, and handled with that sunny style that players like Duke did so well – lots of warm jazzy elements in the backings, coming from Fender Rhodes by Bobby Lyle, percussion from Airto, and drums from the great Harvey Mason – who really brings an edge to some of the groovers. Titles include a killer cover of the Skip Scarborough tune "Don't Ask My Neighbors" – plus "La La Song", "Overture", "At The Concert", "I Believe You", and "Jump Street". Til Tomorrow Comes is filled with soaring sounds from Raul De Souza – a Brazilian musician who first recorded under the name of Raulzinho during the bossa nova years – but one who's at the height of his powers here working on the Cali scene at the end of the 70s! Raul manages to blend his lead instrument with fuller arrangements from Arthur Wright – who brings in plenty of the best elements from contemporary R&B, adds in some backing vocals, yet never diminishes Raul's presence on the record at all! Instead, De Souza seems to draw all sorts of energy from the folks around him on the sessions for the record – really stepping out with the best sort of jazz funk grooves that Capitol Records were laying down at the time – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Up & At It", "Self Sealing", "Pleasurize", "Fe No Me Nol", and "Til Tomorrow comes". CD features bonus tracks – single versions of "Til Tomorrow Comes", "Sweet Lucy", and "Daisy Mae". CD

Billy EckstineSenior Soul/If She Walked Into My Life ... CD
Stax/Enterprise, 1972/1974. Used ... $7.99
2 early 70s sessions from Billy Eckstine – both recorded for Stax Records! First up is Senior Soul – a well-titled set not only given Billy's age, but also because of the surprisingly soulful undercurrent to the record – an extension into the genre even greater than Eckstine's previous recordings for Motown – and proof that he was really trying to stretch out towards new audiences at the time! Artie Butler handled the backings, and he uses a groove that's pretty full, but never overwhelming – more ebullient soul than some of Eckstine's more familiar jazz – with backing vocals and bright horns, yet still plenty of space for Billy to do his thing. The best numbers have Eckstine coming across with the 70s cool of Grady Tate on his vocal sides – and titles include "Thank You For The Moment", "A Song For You", "A Man Who Sings", "Today Was Tomorrow Yesterday", "I Believe In Music", and "Living Like A Gypsy". If She Walked Into My Life is extremely compelling stuff – and you've really got to give Billy credit for reinventing himself like this! The album features Billy's deep deep voice amidst arrangements by Artie Butler, Jimmy Jones, Mike Melvoin, and Billy Byers – sort of a blend of Grady Tate sophisti-jazz, and Scott Walker baroque, with a moody mellow sound that would make either of them proud. Titles include "The Taste Of My Tears", "I Am Yours", "Maybe This Time", "The Very Thought Of You", and "All In Love Is Fair". CD

Wilton FelderWe All Have A Star/Inherit The Wind ... CD
ABC/Robinsongs (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of albums from saxophonist Wilton Felder – back to back on a single CD! We All Have A Star offers up solo sounds from Crusaders reedman Wilton Felder – a really great set that's very much in the best vibe of his larger group at the time – yet one that also offers up a stronger focus on Wilton's sublime solo work on tenor! The album's got plenty of Crusaders help on board – given that Stix Hooper and Joe Sample produced the set along with Wilton – and the vibe's a wonderful blend of electric backings, with especially great keyboard lines, and Felder's well-phrased saxophone lines over the top! A few cuts feature vocals – sung by Angela Bryant or Debbie Demoia Ross – and titles include "We All Have A Star", "I Know Who I Am", "The Cycles Of Time", "Why Believe", "Ride On", and "You & Me & Ecstasy". Inherit The Wind is one of the best Crusaders-related solo projects – a soulful bit of fusion from saxophonist Wilton Felder, co-produced with his fellow Crusaders! The album's got the best sunny finish of the group's late 70s albums – traces of Latin, funk, and soul bubbling through a warm jazzy mix – staying soulful all the way through, and coming up with a sound that's smooth, but never sleepy. The blueprint for a million other records – none of which ever sounded this good! Titles include "Insight", "LA Light", "Until The Morning Comes", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "Inherit The Wind". Dolores GrayWarm Brandy (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $17.99 21.99
One of the few studio albums recorded by sultry singer Dolores Gray – a great late 50s set for Capitol Records, recorded with a moody, mellow tone! The backings here are by Sid Feller, who sets things up in keeping with the seductive look on the cover – a gentle approach to the music that's often touched with a bit of guitar, played with the same sensitivity that Julie London received on her classic albums for Liberty. And if there was a comparison to make here, it might be to those great records – because Gray's more theatrical tendencies are nicely held in check by Feller's presentation – giving the record a nice jazz-based appeal. Titles include "Shangri La", "You're My Thrill", "Isn't It Romantic", "Speak Low", "Don't Blame Me", and "How Long Has This Been Going On". CD

One of the more soulful albums ever cut by Japanese vocalist Mieko Hirota – a set that mixes her warmly raspy style with some equally warm electric backings – all with a vibe that's a bit like Esther Phillips' albums for Kudu Records! Arrangements are by Hiromasa Suzuki and Kiyoshi Sugano – and Suzuki plays keyboards on all cuts, while Sugano brings in a few guitar solos too – amidst other jazz-based instrumentation that's warmed up by some larger strings, used at just the right, light level! Lyrics are in English – and titles include "Soul Lady", "If You Touch Me Baby", "I'm Blind To All But You", "Love Won't Let Me Wait", "They Say It's Wonderful", "Loving You Was Like A Party", and "Love For Sale". ✨✧ Takehiro HondaWhat's Going On ... LP
Trio/Jazz Room (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Early soul jazz piano work from Takehiro Honda – recorded in a style that's quite different than most of his later albums! The sound here is full and rich – with Honda's work on the keys augmented by fuller backings arranged by Teddy Adams – all recorded in the US (we think), with a quality that's a fair bit like some of the best soul jazz coming out of LA at the end of the 60s! Honda plays both acoustic and electric piano – and the groove has a hiply vamping style that's always verging on funky, but which is a bit more laidback overall. The record echoes with plenty of the best influences from Les McCann, The Crusaders, Gerald Wilson, and other west coast soul jazz figures – and titles include "Greasy Spoon", "Sham Time", "Ain't Tell You A Good Way But", "Ain't It Funky Now", "What's Going On", and "Check Out Your Mind" LP, Vinyl record album

Etta Jones is definitely nice and warm here – working with some great backings from Oliver Nelson, who mixes in a bit of strings with the usual jazzy punch he was delivering at the time! Jones' vocals are at the height of her early powers here – working with poise, class, and a heck of a lot of soul – and titles on the set include "You Better Go Now", "All My Life", "And This Is My Beloved", "Unchained Melody", "If You Were Mine", "Hurry Home", and "I Laughed At Love". Early work by singer Beverly Kenny – a great 50s jazz vocalist who never got her due, but who managed to make some pretty fine records at the time! This album's one of them, and features backings from Ralph Burns – not as dark and moody as some of his other work of the 50s, and in a lightly, sprightly swinging style that really works well for Bev – often with a nice gentle swing that works well with the jazz modes of her vocals. Titles include "If I Were A Bell", "This Can't Be Love", "Give Me The Simple Life", "You Make Me Feel So Young", and "You Go To My Head". CD

Altantic, 1973. Very Good ... $2.99
A cool bit of funk from reedman Robin Kenyatta – slightly electric, and often with a bit of an angular groove – almost a South African influence at times, although warmed up with a good dose of American soul as well! Most numbers here have some sort of keyboards – either from Pat Rebillot's electric piano or Neville Hinds' keyboards – and in addition to Robin's reedwork on alto and soprano sax, the set also features Enrico Rava on trumpet, Jonas Gwangwa on trombone, Carlos Garnett on tenor, and Sonny Burke on organ. Rhythm is at the core of the set – and is handled by either Ron Carter or Boris Gardner on bass, Ray Lucas or Winston Grennan on drums, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion. Parts of the set were recorded in Kingston – a fact that definitely shows in the grooves – and Betty Davis makes a brief guest appearance on vocals! Tracks include "Terra Nova", "Temptation Took Control Of Me", "Freedom Jazz Dance", "Need Your Love So Bad", "Touch", and "Island Shakedown". LP, Vinyl record album

Teichiku/Cinedelic (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 39.99
Shamisen never sounded so groovy before – thanks to excellent work from Akira Ishikawa & His Count Buffalos – who are working here at their funky 70s best! The album mixes great sounds from Count Buffalos with the solo talents of Rinsoye Kida on shamisen – the traditional Japanese three-stringed instrument that's usually used in much more conservative settings – but which is recorded here in a style that's right up front in the mix, and able to step out nicely in front of the fuller, groovier backings from Ishikawa and his group! Given the nature of the instrument, the style is quite different than some other jazz albums from the time that try to mix with Japanese folkloric styles – maybe a bit like Dorothy Ashby on the koto, but more striking overall. Notes and titles are all in Japanese – and the whole thing's pretty darn compelling! LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis grooving in 2 of his best modes of the 60s – live, and with funky studio backings from Richard Evans! Hang On Sloopy is easily one of Ramsey Lewis' most successful records – done in the hit soul jazz style that he forged with the Young/Holt rhythm combo, honed to perfection before a live crowd at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. The record's a key part of Ramsey's live recorded output – showing the trio in pyrotechnic form before the kind of packed-house audiences they were playing to nightly at the time. Includes swinging versions of "Hard Day's Night", "High Heel Sneakers", and "Hang On Sloopy" – plus the original cut "Movin Easy". On the album Wade In The Water, Ramsey's funky piano is backed by some soulful arrangements handled by Richard Evans – in a really tight style that includes great percussion, electric bass, and an all-out kicking style that makes even the mellowest tunes groove! Evans really adds a lot to the set – expanding the core groove of the Lewis trio with a proud and righteous Chicago approach – really bringing some "soul" to the soul jazz sound of the group, with incredible results! Titles include "Money In the Pocket", "Wade In the Water", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Up Tight", and "Hold It Right There". CD

The album's a key early classic for Liberty – still very fragile, personal, and up-close enough to make you think you might just be able to jump inside the cover and spend the night with Julie! Russ Garcia handles the backings with great care – a bit of gentle strings here, some light jazz there – but always letting London's breathy vocals come up very high in the mix. A wonderful album of sad-tinged bossa tunes sung by the enigmatic Ana Lucia – a really great vocalist who gets superb backings here from Oscar Castro Neves and the Zimbo Trio! The style of the album is slightly more emotive than the usual bossa album of the time – with a dreamy approach to the vocals that reminds us of some of our favorite French or Italian singers of the early 60s, all nicely juxtaposed with a mixture of jazz and string arrangements from Castro-Neves, and produced with a light and floating finish. There's kind of a watery brilliance to the whole thing that really matches the look of the cover – and titles include "Amei Tanto", "Andam Dizendo", "Acalanto", "Derradeira Primavera", "Valsa De Euridice", "Homem De Verdade", and "Tem Do". The most righteous album ever from Kellee Patterson – her first record, and a set that's way different from her more soul-based sides of later years! The album's got Patterson working in a wonderfully soulful approach to jazz – a style that's not unlike the earliest work by Dee Dee Bridgewater, especially her seminal Afro Blue album – and which mixes Kellee's unique vocals with some very hip backings that are right in the best Black Jazz mode! Instrumentation is from a loose jazz combo, and the tunes are a mix of jazzy numbers and a few tighter tracks – a really rich array of sounds that comes together beautifully in the hands of producer Gene Russell. Titles include a stellar version of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage", a great take on the Flip Nunez number "See You Later", and the tracks "Soul Daddy", "Be All Your Own", "Magic Wand Of Love", "You", and "Look At The Child".
