✨✧ King TubbyConcrete Jungle Dub ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A 70s dub masterpiece – and one of the records that really set the standard for the genre! Producer Winston Riley first rose to reggae fame in the Techniques, but here he's a master of the instrumental mode – working with a group of all-star musicians at Harry J's and King Tubby's Studio – all to craft these spare, bassy grooves that are completely out of sight! There's a sense of understatement here that separates the music from later dub work – and the record's a great reminder that sometimes less is more – especially when it comes to exploring the deeper sides of the sonic spectrum. Titles include "Chalist Dub", "Staga Dub", "Dread Dub", "Mistry Maker Dub", "Red Gold & Green Dub", "Peace & Love Dub", and "Who Is The Dub". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ King Tubby & Linval ThompsonWhip Them King Tubby! ... CD
Auralux (UK), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Another great collection of blistering reggae numbers, with a companion set of deep dubs whipped up by King Tubby! This set focuses on Linval Thompson, who unlike a lot of other Jamaican producers, was not afraid to take his own turn at the mic. The quality of the rhythms here is top choice, with rootsy vocals from Thompson, Johnny Clarke and Horace Andy, and we hardly need to comment on Tubby's magic touch on the dub half. 18 tracks in all: 'Wise Man", "Tell Me You Love Me", "Everybody's Got To Be Free", "I've Got To Reach Home", "I'm In Love", 'Whe The Wicked", "Whip Them King Tubby", "Tell Me Why", "Dread On The Go", "A Wiser Version", "Love Me Version", "Freedom Version", "Homeward Dub", "Loving Dub", 'Wicked Version", "Whipping Version", "Telling Version" and "Version On The Go". ✨✧ King Tubby & The AgrovatorsDubbing In The Back Yard ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Extremely hypnotic dub from King Tubbys & The Agrovators – and a record with a sound that's every bit as stripped-down and laidback as you might guess from the image on the cover! The approach here gets right to the core of instrumental dub – and tunes are very stark and spare – with a completely sublime focus on splashy drums and deeply rumbling bass – often with hardly any other elements to set things off! Bunny Lee produced the tracks with a very uncluttered approach – none of the heavy mixing that might have lead to more abstract version cuts – and just a heavy focus on the bad-stepping, slow-moving elements are the core. Titles include "Relaxing Mood", "Hot Weather", "Mountains Rain", "Hideaway", "Natural Glow", "Plantation Run", and "Summers Eve". LP, Vinyl record album

Never-issued work from the legendary Agusutus Pablo – one of the few cats in the world who could ever make a melodica sound like a super-trippy instrument! Here, Pablo's working with King Tubby at the controls – a magical pairing that sounds every bit as wonderful here as it did on a few of their other key classics – heavy rhythms with plenty of bass, lots of echo in the dubby production, and those spooky, long-spun, blown-keyboard lines that made Poablo so unique! Titles include "Happy & Happy", "Sugar", "Uprising", "Smiling Faces", "Prince", "Watchful", "That's Real", and "Stars". CD

VariousFirehouse Revolution – King Tubby's Production In The Digital Era 1985 to 1989 ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
While everyone else is focusing on the 70s, Pressure Sounds brings their reissues into the digital age with this great set of mid to late 80s tracks cut at Tubby's for the groundbreaking Firehouse label. Like the funky electro tracks coming out of NY and Detroit in the mid 80s, the best Jamaican producers were embracing the host of new electronic and digital sounds at their disposal, and crafting their own new brand of funky reggae, that would later become ragga. This compiulation is a nice set of tracks that are just now starting to become collector's items on the original singles, seminal tracks like Anthony Red Rose's "Temper", "Under Me Fat Thing" & "Two Big Bull Inna One Pen", Lloyd Hemming's "Rude Boy" & King Kong's "Babylon". 14 tracks in all! VariousOnce Upon A Time At King Tubby's ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. ✨✧ ProphetsKing Tubby's Prophecies Of Dub ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic album of dub from the 70s – and one that's got as much mystery on its cover as it's got magic in the grooves! Despite the name of King Tubby on the front, the real genius at the controls is Pat Kelly – who's got a different, but equally wicked way with working up a track – in this case, backing tracks from Bunny Striker Lee, which are given all sorts of cool changes in the snare, echo on the core drum parts, and nicely spacey touches all around the edges – almost outer space dub, of a mode that would come on more strongly a few years later! Pat Kelly claimed a lot of influence from jazz, and you can definitely hear it in the snare – on titles that include "Earth Fear", "Tradition Skank", "Black Out", "Serious Rebellion", "Bad Man Skank", "Was Alive", "Gun Man From Water House", and "Babylon Red". ✨✧ Augustus PabloAugustus Pablo At King Tubby's (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Attack/Radiation Roots (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Augustus Pablo at his trippy best – blowing the melodica over a host of sweet dubby rhythms all produced by Bunny Lee! In the hands of Pablo, the instrument seems like it was made to be used best in dub – as the "wind piano" has this sound that's as personal and mystical as the rhythms that give it support – blown by Agustus with this style that's very different from some of the more mainstream melodica modes – with a very improvisational approach, and a sound that expands and contracts in volume, depending on the lungpower used at each moment! Pablo's made plenty of great records in this mode, and this may well be one of the best – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Desire Dub", "Musical Pablo", "Barbwire Dub", "Maka", "Best Dub", "Foggy Pablo", "Rough Pablo", "A House Is Not A Dub", "Blind Dub", and "No Gesturing Pablo". CD also features two bonus tracks – "Ride Me Dub" and "Every Dub I Own". CD

✨✧ Augustus PabloKing Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown ... LP
Clocktower, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Essential dub material from the legendary King Tubby – a set that's one of the best of the genre during the classic years – and which stands as a true testament to how great the format can be when handled right! The watchword here is simplicity – as the key elements are almost isolated in little sonic chambers, then set to resonate alongside each other – pulled from rhythms from tracks initially done as vocal productions, but reworked through the mixing talents of Erroll "ET" Thompson and Tubby. Players include Bobby Ellis on trumpet, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall on tenor, and Augustus Pablo on organ and piano, plus a bit of clarinet. Titles include "Keep On Dubbing", "Stop Them Jah", "Young Generation Dub", "Each One Dub", "555 Dub Street", "Braces Tower Dub", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "Corner Crew Dub", "Say So", "Skanking Dub", and "Frozen Dub". Beats InternationalLet Them Eat Bingo ... CD
Elektra, 1990. Used ... $1.99
A big one for Norman Cook – caught here in his post-Housemartins, pre-Fatboy Slim years – working here in a playful blend of beats and samples that really point the way towards his later chart fame to come! The tracks here have a simple elegance that might have sounded dated a few years after release, but which is now finally beginning to win us over again – a really basic use of musical elements to construct a beat-heavy tune – one that's decidedly poppy, given all the hooks and vocals in the album, but which is also kind of refreshing to hear these days, considering all the wrong directions such efforts took in later years! The straightforward Cook remix approach is in full effect here – with one key idea hung on each tune – but it's also an approach that works well when not to much is expected of it, as you'll hear on tracks that include "Dance To The Drummer's Beat", "Dub Be Good To Me", "Burundi Blues", "Blame It On The Bassline", "Tribute To King Tubby", and "Babies Makin Babies". The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Disc 1 also features 13 bonus tracks from singles and EPs released in 1967 – and disc 2 is completed by 11 MORE bonus tracks – 6 released for the first time ever, including "Jumpin The Gun", "Respoken", "Fool's Paradise" and "Conquistador". Beautiful sounds from the mighty Jacob Miller – material recorded with Augustus Pablo in the years before Miller went onto greater fame in Inner Circle – and with a rootsy vibe that's still extremely powerful all these many years later! Pablo's at the height of his talents here – able to hit just the best righteous modes, but without ever going over the top – at a level that seems completely effortless, and which really empowers the message in Miller's vocals! The set's overflowing with gems – and titles include "Keep On Knocking", "Each One Teach One", "Who Say Jah No Dread", "False Rasta", "Baby I Love You So", and "Girl Named Pat" – plus the dubs "Knocking Version", "Hungry Town Skank", "King Tubby Meet Rockers Uptown", "Jah Dread", "Each One Teach One Version", and "Girl Named Pat Version". ✨✧ Sly & The Revolutionaries with Jah ThomasBlack Ash Dub (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The mighty Sly Dunbar, working here on drums, in some very heady company – a wicked dub-heavy group that includes longtime partner Robbie Shakespear on bass – plus Gladdy Anderson on piano, Ansel Collins on organ, and Bingy Bunny and Bo Peep on guitars! The music is raw and stripped-down – produced by Jah Thomas at Channel One, mixed by Prince Jammy at King Tubby's – but with a rock-solid vibe that grabs you musically in a way that all of these many references hardly do justice! At a time when Sly was breaking big in the mainstream, working on lots of imported productions too, the groove is still very down to earth, and back to the amazing sound that he and his confreres first brought to the Kingston scene much earlier in the 70s. All the songs are titled in tribute to intoxicating substances –and include "Marijuana", "Herb", "Collie", "Lambsbread", "Rizla", "Acapulco Gold", "Black Ash", "White Rum", "Cocaine", and "LSD". ✨✧ Linval Thompson/Big Joe/TrinityTrojan Roots Collection (I Love Marijuana/African Princess/Rock In The Ghetto/bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A trio of classic albums produced by Linval Thompson – with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Linval's I Love Marijuana record – an album with a striking title – and a set that really marked the full promise of Linval Thompson in the 70s – a dubby classic that's every bit as strong on the vocal side of Thompson's skills, as it is the production side! The album was recorded at Tubby's with the Revolutionaries band and an uncredited Junjo Lawes (who would later go on to cut some of the best dub albums ever, with Scientist) – and the vocals have this great style of cresting between sweeter modes and more biting modes – particularly when wrapped around the social themes that always made Thompson stand out. Titles include "I Love Marijuana", "Don't Push Your Brother", "Dread Are the Controller", "The Children of the Ghetto", "Not Follow Fashion", and "Jamaican Colley Version". African Princess is a set that features great DJ vocals from Big Joe – one of the lesser-knowns of the time, but a voice that's perfect for the rich sense of flow that Linval Thompson brings to the production – on titles that include "African Princess", "Big Disgrace", "Tubby At The Controls", "Smoke Marijuana", "Love Can Conquer", and "Pauline Love The Natty". Rock In The Ghetto is classic 70s work from Trinity – a Jamaican deejay singer who gets some excellent help on the set from Linval Thompson! Thompson mixes dubby modes with some sharper, crispier crackles at key moments – working as a nice way of punctuation to the moods delivered by Trinity's vocals – which are almost always in the righteous modes you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Dangerous Rockers & Ting", "Pope Paul Dead & Gone", "Don't Lose Me", "Life Is Not Easy", "Don't Lose Me", "Every Trick In The Book", "Freedom Style", and "Rock In The Ghetto". 2CD set features 10 bonus tracks – titles that include "Lover's Style" and "Come On Baby Dub Style" by The Roots Radics, "Follow My Heart (12" mix)" and "Pope Paul Dead & Gone (12" mix)" by Trinity, "Mr CID" by Barry Brown, "There's A Song" by Pat Kelly, "King Tubby's Rockers" and "Second Hand Girl" by Scientist & Roots Radics, and "Here With Me" by Linval Thompson. Get On Down, 1973. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $7.99
You could go 'round and 'round with music historians arguing whether or not this album, Java Java Java or Aquarius Dub was the first full length dub LP, but it makes no difference to us – as this is one mighty set of Perryisms – wrought in the pre-Black Ark era. Some of the Upsetter's finest rhythms rendered in dub versions here, and though he's uncredited on the sleeve, we've read that King Tubby was responsible for the wonderful reverb and mixing console action taking these tracks to the next level. 2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Side two is even better, and features Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side".
