King TubbyKing Tubby's In Fine Style ... CD
Trojan (UK), 1970s. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
If there's one artist who's name is synonymous with dub, it's the master himself, King Tubby! And while his name has been pasted onto more than a few dodgy compilations over the years, this double disc set's no joke. 46 bottom heavy tracks, with Tubby's inimitable touch on the mixing console and echoplex, guaranteeing a deep space journey into the heaviest rhythms around, with sinewy basslines, reverb laden horn stabs and chattering percussion keeping proceedings moving. The first disc starts out with several dubs of the Crystalites, before moving into a nice, nice batch of Tubby blessed Lee Perry tracks by the Upsetters, like "IPA Skank", "Freak Out Skank", "Dub Organiser" and "Elephant Rock". But Scratch isn't the only top notch producer on board, as there's numbers by Rupie Edwards, Bunny Lee, Keith Hudson, Augustus Pablo, Linval Thompson and Niney Holness too! Bouncing dubs like "Stalag 17 Version", "New Style", "Fire From The Observer", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "King Tubby's In Fine Style", "Jah Jah Dub", "Conquering Version", "I Am Lost Dub", "Gorgon Version", "A Harder Version", "A Ruffer Version" and "Satta Dread" will keep this set rocking on and on! Greensleeves, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wild dubs from the legendary King Tubby – not really a proper live record, but rather an amazing batch of studio extrapolations that Tubby let loose at a famous concert with The Wailers – reworked beautifully in the studio with some really incredible sounds! Heavy, hypnotic rhythms that pull you and don't let up – plus a few soulful, rootsy vocal numbers, too – and the titles include "I Am, I Am The King", "Most High In Dub", "Coxsone Down Beat", "Come On Little Girl, Come On", "Second Cut", "Ethiopia Land Of My Father" and more. ✨✧ ProphetsKing Tubby's Prophecies Of Dub ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic album of dub from the 70s – and one that's got as much mystery on its cover as it's got magic in the grooves! Despite the name of King Tubby on the front, the real genius at the controls is Pat Kelly – who's got a different, but equally wicked way with working up a track – in this case, backing tracks from Bunny Striker Lee, which are given all sorts of cool changes in the snare, echo on the core drum parts, and nicely spacey touches all around the edges – almost outer space dub, of a mode that would come on more strongly a few years later! Pat Kelly claimed a lot of influence from jazz, and you can definitely hear it in the snare – on titles that include "Earth Fear", "Tradition Skank", "Black Out", "Serious Rebellion", "Bad Man Skank", "Was Alive", "Gun Man From Water House", and "Babylon Red". Blood & Fire (UK), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The historic first meeting of Vivian Jackson (aka Yabby You) and King Tubby – originally released on the Prophet label in 1976. Inspired by the book of Revelation, even without the lyrics on these instrumental dubs, the apocalyptic themes resound through the echoing horn lines and organ stabs. Like much of the Blood & Fire catalog, an absolute essential, cut by Aston "Family Man" Barrett, Robbie Shalespeare, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Tommy McCook & Vin Gordon. The tracks include "Conquering Dub", "Anti-Christ Rock", "Beware Of God", "Robber Rock", "Zion Is Here", "Hungering Dub", and "Creations & Versions". CD

Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
While everyone else is focusing on the 70s, Pressure Sounds brings their reissues into the digital age with this great set of mid to late 80s tracks cut at Tubby's for the groundbreaking Firehouse label. Like the funky electro tracks coming out of NY and Detroit in the mid 80s, the best Jamaican producers were embracing the host of new electronic and digital sounds at their disposal, and crafting their own new brand of funky reggae, that would later become ragga. This compiulation is a nice set of tracks that are just now starting to become collector's items on the original singles, seminal tracks like Anthony Red Rose's "Temper", "Under Me Fat Thing" & "Two Big Bull Inna One Pen", Lloyd Hemming's "Rude Boy" & King Kong's "Babylon". 14 tracks in all! ✨✧ VariousOnce Upon A Time At King Tubby's ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. While it would be pretty hard to make a single or even double CD overview of Striker Lee's career as a producer, this set does a nice job of highlighting some great tracks. The Aggrovators sound great throughout, and the tracks are voiced by sweet soulful singers like Horace Andy, Max Romeo and Johny Clarke, or Dee Jays like Trinity and Dillinger. 17 tracks in all, including Horace Andy "The Love Of A Woman", and "You Are My Angel", Johnny Clarke "Creation Rebel", Dillinger "African Roots Rock Reggae" and "Marijuana On My Brain", I Roy "The Duke", Max Romeo "Natty Dread Take Over" and The Aggrovators "Black Superman". ✨✧ Augustus PabloAugustus Pablo At King Tubby's (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Attack/Radiation Roots (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Augustus Pablo at his trippy best – blowing the melodica over a host of sweet dubby rhythms all produced by Bunny Lee! In the hands of Pablo, the instrument seems like it was made to be used best in dub – as the "wind piano" has this sound that's as personal and mystical as the rhythms that give it support – blown by Agustus with this style that's very different from some of the more mainstream melodica modes – with a very improvisational approach, and a sound that expands and contracts in volume, depending on the lungpower used at each moment! Pablo's made plenty of great records in this mode, and this may well be one of the best – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Desire Dub", "Musical Pablo", "Barbwire Dub", "Maka", "Best Dub", "Foggy Pablo", "Rough Pablo", "A House Is Not A Dub", "Blind Dub", and "No Gesturing Pablo". CD also features two bonus tracks – "Ride Me Dub" and "Every Dub I Own". CD

✨✧ Augustus PabloKing Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown ... CD
Shanachie, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Essential dub material from the legendary King Tubby – a set that's one of the best of the genre during the classic years – and which stands as a true testament to how great the format can be when handled right! The watchword here is simplicity – as the key elements are almost isolated in little sonic chambers, then set to resonate alongside each other – pulled from rhythms from tracks initially done as vocal productions, but reworked through the mixing talents of Erroll "ET" Thompson and Tubby. Players include Bobby Ellis on trumpet, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall on tenor, and Augustus Pablo on organ and piano, plus a bit of clarinet. Titles include "Keep On Dubbing", "Stop Them Jah", "Young Generation Dub", "Each One Dub", "555 Dub Street", "Braces Tower Dub", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "Corner Crew Dub", "Say So", "Skanking Dub", and "Frozen Dub". ✨✧ Nat BirchallTradition Disc In Dub – Nat Birchall Meets Al Breadwinner ... LP
Ancient Archive Of Sound (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $34.99
A fantastic album in the new dub tradition that UK saxophonist Nat Birchall has been exploring – recorded modes that are very different than his spiritual jazz albums, but equally cool overall! The vibe here is maybe like some lost date recorded at King Tubby's – but with more of a jazz element in the mix – as Birchall plays tenor and flute, plus piano, melodica, organ, bass, and percussion – all in this swirling mix that's created by Al Breadwinner – who's not only the producer and mixer, but adds in his own organ, drums, guitar, piano, melodica, and percussion! The group are joined by Vin Gordon – whose trombone is an excellent balance in the sound – and David Fullwood adds in some trumpet lines too, which furthers the jazz elements in the overall sound. Titles include "Hornsman Rock", "Dub In The Heavens (parts 1 & 2)", "Struggle Dub", "Organizer Version", "Olaudah Equiano Dub", "Giza Dub", and "Congo Drum Style". LP, Vinyl record album

Georgie FameTwo Faces Of Fame/Third Face Of Fame ... CD
CBS/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $8.99 14.98
2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Side two is even better, and features Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side". Linval Thompson/Big Joe/TrinityTrojan Roots Collection (I Love Marijuana/African Princess/Rock In The Ghetto/bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A trio of classic albums produced by Linval Thompson – with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Linval's I Love Marijuana record – an album with a striking title – and a set that really marked the full promise of Linval Thompson in the 70s – a dubby classic that's every bit as strong on the vocal side of Thompson's skills, as it is the production side! The album was recorded at Tubby's with the Revolutionaries band and an uncredited Junjo Lawes (who would later go on to cut some of the best dub albums ever, with Scientist) – and the vocals have this great style of cresting between sweeter modes and more biting modes – particularly when wrapped around the social themes that always made Thompson stand out. Titles include "I Love Marijuana", "Don't Push Your Brother", "Dread Are the Controller", "The Children of the Ghetto", "Not Follow Fashion", and "Jamaican Colley Version". African Princess is a set that features great DJ vocals from Big Joe – one of the lesser-knowns of the time, but a voice that's perfect for the rich sense of flow that Linval Thompson brings to the production – on titles that include "African Princess", "Big Disgrace", "Tubby At The Controls", "Smoke Marijuana", "Love Can Conquer", and "Pauline Love The Natty". Rock In The Ghetto is classic 70s work from Trinity – a Jamaican deejay singer who gets some excellent help on the set from Linval Thompson! Thompson mixes dubby modes with some sharper, crispier crackles at key moments – working as a nice way of punctuation to the moods delivered by Trinity's vocals – which are almost always in the righteous modes you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Dangerous Rockers & Ting", "Pope Paul Dead & Gone", "Don't Lose Me", "Life Is Not Easy", "Don't Lose Me", "Every Trick In The Book", "Freedom Style", and "Rock In The Ghetto". 2CD set features 10 bonus tracks – titles that include "Lover's Style" and "Come On Baby Dub Style" by The Roots Radics, "Follow My Heart (12" mix)" and "Pope Paul Dead & Gone (12" mix)" by Trinity, "Mr CID" by Barry Brown, "There's A Song" by Pat Kelly, "King Tubby's Rockers" and "Second Hand Girl" by Scientist & Roots Radics, and "Here With Me" by Linval Thompson. ✨✧ Augustus PabloEl Rockers ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Essential! One wonders why when the original King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown album is so heavy, that you'd want another dub version, but one spin of this special reissue package and you'll be convinced. Altogether different dubs and versions of many of the same rhythm cuts as that watershed dub LP only prove that the whole concept of "versioning", and cutting multiple dubs of the same rhythms (usually to service selectors and sound systems who needed unique tracks) was pure genius on the part of Jamaican producers. Add that to the sheer weight of the rhythms used here, and you've got a formula for a potent set! Once again, the producers at Pressure Sounds have dug up some beautiful gems, finding unique versions of H. Swaby's melodica dancing over thundering Rockers' rhythms and taking a dip now and again in a bucket of reverb & echoplex. Insightful liner notes and a beautiful sleeve complete this package of 17 massive instrumental tracks, including "Black Gunn", "New Style", "El Rockers", "Skanking Easy", "Tribalist" and "Cassava Piece". Tubby HayesSymphony – The Lost Session 1972 ... CD
Solid (UK), 1972. Used ... $24.99
A lost live date from the great British tenorist Tubby Hayes – recorded right near the end of his too-short life, but a stone cooker all the way through! The material was recorded live at the Hopbine – but it's different than both the other 1972 album from the venue, or earlier Hopbine sessions – as this one features backing by the trio of pianist Tony Lee, who was becoming one of Tubby's main accompanists at the time. The tracks are all long, open, and very stretched out – with that incredible Hayes solo power still very much in top form – that non-stop sense of imagination and creativity that easily made Tubby one of the giants of his time, even amidst American players like Johnny Griffin or Dexter Gordon. A really fantastic album from this hip British reedman – and maybe his strongest jazz album to date! As you might guess from the title, Tenderlonious plays the music of Tubby Hayes here – taking on older songs by the 60s British jazz giant, served up in small combo modes, with flute in the lead instead of a tenor! The group's got a really deep, rich sound – with creative instrumentation from Hamish Balfour on Fender Rhodes, piano, and vibes – plus Nick Walters on trumpet, Aidan Shepherd on accordion, Pete Martin on bass, and Tim Carnegie on drums – all players who really get that very hip groove of Tubby at his best – particularly the style of his mid 60s live albums on Fontana. There's no processing or other effects – as on other Tenderlonious albums – just straight jazz, beautifully done – and also a bit of soprano and piccolo from the leader too. There's just four tracks on the record – this is more of an EP than an LP – but the whole thing is superb, and titles include "Down In The Village", "Raga", "In The Night", and "Trenton Place". This is the kind of killer small group material that is making Chicago's avant scene jump with energy these days! The set features the soon-to-be legendary trombonist Jeb Bishop in a trio with heavy-duty bassist Kent Kessler and up-and-coming drummer Tim Mulvenna. The set's a no-nonsense batch of avant trio tracks, played with the kind of power and imagination that's got things heated up nearly every night of the week in Chitown. Titles include "Nomads", "Pyramid", "Duress Duress", and "Big Stubby" – and the whole thing's packaged in a handy little 5" gatefold sleeve! CD

Roy BuddInternecine Project ... LP
Pye/Trunk (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $29.99
That's an angry-looking James Coburn on the cover – a tipoff that you're in for something really special on the record – one of the best-ever soundtracks from the mighty Roy Budd, the man who also gave the world the superb score for Get Carter! There's a few elements here that echo the music for that famous film – including some inventive percussion, moody basslines, and a great use of space – and the lineup of musicians features some surprising contributions from important British jazz artists – including Kenny Baker on trumpet and Tubby Hayes on tenor, Frank Barber on percussion, and Jeff Clyne on bass – plus Roy himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and piano! This is the first-ever extended presentation of music from the soundtrack, a superb treat throughout – with titles that include "Mr Easy", "Death In The Shower", "Alright Alex", "Find A Solution", "The Deal", "Never Think Twice", "Waiting For Murder", "Main Theme", "Somebody's Going To Have To Kill Him", and "Borrowed Time". Mark MurphySwingin Singin Affair ... CD
Fontana/Universal (Germany), 1964. Used ... $14.99
A rare British session from vocalist Mark Murphy – and one of his grooviest albums of the 60s! Mark's working here with great backings from the orchestras of Tubby Hayes, John Dankworth, and Les Reed – all of whom give Murphy some of his hippest grooves to date, very much in the mode of some of his work on the Midnight Mood album cut for MPS during the same overseas 60s stretch. And as with that one, there's a nice selection of tunes that goes way past the usual – and which shows off the widest range of Murphy's groovy vocal talents – titles that include "Ballyhoo", "Iceberg", "Stablemates", "She Loves You", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "I Left My Heart In San Francisco", "From Time To Time", and "The Best Is Yet To Come".
