✨✧ King Sunny AdeAura ... LP
Island, 1984. Very Good ... $9.99
A crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ King Sunny AdeSynchro System/Aura ... CD
Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! VariousNigeria Soul Power 70 – Afro Funk, Afro Rock, Afro Disco ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... $12.99
A fantastic collection of lesser-known gems from the 70s scene in Nigeria – music that's a great counterpart to better-remembered Afro Funk and soul from international giants like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade! This set digs deep, and is a nicelly expanded version of a set that Soul Jazz issued years back as a limited edition 7" single box for Record Store Day – presented here with more music, and a detailed set of notes – really getting at the special scene that was taking place in Nigeria at the time, as the nation was rising to the top of the African scene with a fantastic criss-crossing of musical modes! There's definitely plenty of the funk promised in the title, and the "rock" is usually of the funky kind with great guitar work – and a few later cuts even pick up the pace with a bit of disco, but more in the fast-funk mode, and hardly the slick stuff of the American scene. Titles include "Africans Must Unite" and "Shake Hands" by Geraldo Pino, "We'll Get Home" by The Wings, "E Ye Ika Se" by Alhagi Prof Kollington Ayinala, "Kassa Kpa Sama Kpa" by Colomach, "Beware" by MFB, "You Are The One" by Tony Grey & The Ozimba Messengers, "Single Boy" by The Wings, "Sugar Baby" by Don Bruce & The Angels", "Power To The People" by Geraldo Pino, "Igba Alusi" by Original Wings, "Dance Of The Elephants" by Sonny Okosunds Ozziddi, and "Oba Erediauwa I" by Sonny Okosuns. Col Nolan Soul SyndicateWhatever It's Worth ... CD
CBS/Pacific Theatre Encore (Australia), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic funky set from the Sydney scene of the 60s – one of the coolest, cookingest combos to ever record in Australia at the time – and a group with a mix of mod and soul elements that reminds us of the best organ jazz recorded in London too! The group's led by the mighty Col Nolan – whose handling of the Hammond is wonderful – with lots of cool, compressed tones that work very well with the funky drums of John Sangster – a player that most folks know for his other records that feature vibes instead of drums! Sangster's great here kicking up a groove for the combo – and the tunes also feature plenty of tenor and flute from Col Loughnan, whose tight lines underscore all the best elements in the organ. There's a wonderful 60s nite club vibe running through the whole set – and titles include "Shades Of McSoul", "Sunny", "Blues For Madeline", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Rivera Mountain", and "Whatever It's Worth". ✨✧ Cecil TaylorStructures Revisited (Into The Hot/Unit Structures) ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1961/1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of crucial Cecil Taylor sessions from the 60s – both of which show the free-thinking pianist working amidst some larger arrangements! First up are three tracks from the Gil Evans album Into The Hot – all tunes written by Cecil Taylor – a very bold move for Evans, given Taylor's strongly out reputation even at this point in his career – and possibly even more bold, given that Taylor's on the tracks playing piano, alongside players who include Archie Shepp on tenor, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Henry Grimes on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – plus work on one track from Ted Curson on trumpet and Roswell Rudd on trombone. The material's fantastic, and is a key part of Taylor's work at the time, and shows a very different setting for his piano – a bit of tension with the larger Evans group, in a way that's almost more compelling than his own early dates as a leader – on the titles "Pots", "Bulbs", and "Mixed". Next is the Unit Structures album – one of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". Kenny Barron & Mulgrew MillerArt Of Piano Duo – Kenny Barron & Mulgrew Miller Live (3CD set) ... CD
Sunnyside, 2019. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 24.98
A trio of live performances from the duo of Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller – all concerts featuring just the two pianists working alongside each other, in a mode that has both players stretching out beautifully! There's no other instrumentation at all – no bass, drums, or horns – so Barron and Miller also trade back and forth with rhythmic lines while the other is flying freer on a solo – all a wonderful demonstration of their genius at the keys! The set features performances from three different shows, one in 2005, two in 2011 – and there's a few solo numbers along the way too. Titles include "Joy Spring", "Yardbird Suite", "It Could Happen To You", "Never Let Me Go", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "I Mean You", "Blue Monk", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good", "When Lights Are Low", "The Very Thought Of You", and "Song For Abdullah". George BensonGiblet Gravy ... CD
Verve, 1967. Used ... $12.99
Very groovy work from guitarist George Benson – and a set that really helped him make the transition from small group soul jazz to some of his more ambitious work to come! The album's still quite soulful and a bit funky at times – but it also features larger arrangements from the great Tom McIntosh – cast in a blend of modern rhythms, shades, and colors that really help open up Benson's sound. The approach is similar to that McIntosh was using with Bobby Timmons and Jack McDuff at the same time – tight backings, but still with plenty of room for the lead soloist – and Benson's got a great affinity for this sort of album. The tracks are a nice mix of originals and pop items – with cuts like "Sunny", "Thunder Walk", "Walk On By", "Giblet Gravy", and "Sack Of Woe". Plus, the CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Billie's Bounce", and 2 alternate versions of "What's New?". CD

Joe CastroPassion Flower – For Doris Duke (6CD set) ... CD
Sunnyside, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... $44.99 49.98
A massive tribute to this overlooked west coast pianist of the postwar years – an overstuffed set that features unreleased recordings, rare albums, and lots of other unusual material from the archives of the great Joe Castro! The set follows on the very illuminating Lush Life package from Sunnyside a few years back – and like that box, this one showcases just how many things Joe had going on at the time – even if he only got a chance to issued a rare few records as a leader! CD1 features a series of mid 50s trio recordings done in LA – with work from Paul Chambers, Leroy Vinnegar, and Red Mitchell on bass – plus Philly Joe Jones, Lawrence Marable, and Jimmy Pratt on drums. CD2 isn't Joe at all – but features his own recordings of a very young Paul Bley on piano (1956!), plus singer Flo Handy with backings from pianist George Handy. CD3 returns to the Castro catalog – and offers up the Atlantic album Mood Jazz, with arrangements from Neal Hefti and Ray Ellis – plus six more bonus tracks too. CD4 features another Atlantic album – the great Groove Funk Soul – again with unissued bonus tracks. CD5 features rare trio material, done for Joe's tiny Clover Records imprint – an unusual group with Teddy Kotick on bass and Paul Motian on drums – recorded in New York in 1965. CD6 features even more unusual material from the Clover vaults – a few more with the same trio - plus performances from Teddy Edwards and Bill Holman on tenor, Gabe Balthazar on flute and alto, Al Porcino on trumpet, and Bill Hood on baritone – plus orchestrations, tenor, and oboe from Bob Cooper. As with the previous box, the set is a stunning picture of this overlooked piano genius – filled with treasures in many different flavors! CD

✨✧ Wilton FelderWe All Have A Star/Inherit The Wind ... CD
ABC/Robinsongs (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of albums from saxophonist Wilton Felder – back to back on a single CD! We All Have A Star offers up solo sounds from Crusaders reedman Wilton Felder – a really great set that's very much in the best vibe of his larger group at the time – yet one that also offers up a stronger focus on Wilton's sublime solo work on tenor! The album's got plenty of Crusaders help on board – given that Stix Hooper and Joe Sample produced the set along with Wilton – and the vibe's a wonderful blend of electric backings, with especially great keyboard lines, and Felder's well-phrased saxophone lines over the top! A few cuts feature vocals – sung by Angela Bryant or Debbie Demoia Ross – and titles include "We All Have A Star", "I Know Who I Am", "The Cycles Of Time", "Why Believe", "Ride On", and "You & Me & Ecstasy". Inherit The Wind is one of the best Crusaders-related solo projects – a soulful bit of fusion from saxophonist Wilton Felder, co-produced with his fellow Crusaders! The album's got the best sunny finish of the group's late 70s albums – traces of Latin, funk, and soul bubbling through a warm jazzy mix – staying soulful all the way through, and coming up with a sound that's smooth, but never sleepy. The blueprint for a million other records – none of which ever sounded this good! Titles include "Insight", "LA Light", "Until The Morning Comes", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "Inherit The Wind". ✨✧ Jose FelicianoFeliciano! ... CD
RCA, Late 60s. Used ... $6.99
An amazing record! By all rights, this shouldn't be so good – but it's an incredible album of haunting tracks that really has us coming back again and again over the years. The formula is simple: Jose plays late 60s pop tunes on acoustic guitar, and sings them in his spacey soulful voice. Backings are by George Tipton, plus a jazz combo made up of Jim Horn, Ray Brown, and Milt Holland – but it's Jose that really makes the whole thing amazing! His style of presentation is like anything else we can describe – filled with sadness and soul, but enough joy to keep moving forward. He takes tracks like "Light My Fire", "In My Life", "Sunny", and "California Dreamin", and transforms them into an amazing document of the darkness hidden behind the sun of southern California. "California Dreamin" is especially amazing – and Jose's version is one of the best soul songs of all time! CD

✨✧ Rufus HarleyCourage – The Complete Atlantic Recordings ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". Sunnyside, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Bud Powell in the 21st Century, but with a very different vibe than the bop trio performances that made up most of his important recordings! Instead, the setting here is a large one – pianist Ethan Iverson working with the Umbria Jazz Orchestra to bring some of Powell's compositions into a more expansive setting, while also adding in some of his own music as well! Iverson's at the helm on piano, and conducts the ensemble on two tracks – and in addition to the larger horns from the orchestra, the set features core instrumental contributions from Ingrid Jensen on trumpet, Dayna Stephens on tenor, Ben Street on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums. Titles include the Powell classics "Celia", "Tempus Fugit", "Bouncing With Bud", "Wail", and "Dance Of The Infidels" – plus Iverson originals "Bud Powell In The 21st Century" and "Five Simple Spells", each of which have multiple parts. Willie NelsonStardust (remastered edition) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1978. Used ... $3.99
Haunting, personal and beautiful reworkings of Tin Pan Alley tunes by Willie Nelson – and one of his most loved records – produced to loose perfection by the great Booker T. Jones. That many of the original songs here were intended as little more than saleable product when they were released by various artists in their own decades only makes Willie's presentation that much stronger. We're tempted to just come out and say that this is Willie's best album – but we have to give Red Headed Stranger the nod simply because of the original statement that that record holds. Still, Stardust is where you'll find the sweetest work. Tracks include "Georgia On My Mind", "Blue Skies", "All Of Me", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "Moonlight In Vermont", "Someone To Watch Over Me". Also includes 2 bonus tracks from the sessions, nice notes, and reminiscences by Booker T. CD

Benny Sings has a scruffy sort of look on the cover here – but his music is wonderfully smooth and soulful – every bit the sound that we've loved on all of his previous records, and which makes Benny maybe one of the under-discovered talents of the global scene of the past decade or so! Benny's got a way of putting together songs that are simple and tuneful, often with relatively light instrumentation – but which have a way of getting his charms across right from the start, like he's some sort of top-shelf Cali talent from the 70s, just cooking up cool little tunes in his home studio on Fender Rhodes. Benny SoebardjaLizard Years (Lizard/Gimme A Piece Of Gut Rock/Night Train) (2CDs plus booklet) (LP style sleeve) ... CD
Strawberry Rain, Mid/Late 70s. Used 2CD Gatefold ... $8.99
The collected mid 70s psych/prog/funk rock of Benny Soebardja – a beacon from the Indonesian scene and for underground rock the world over – with nearly all of the material from his 3 great albums with his Lizard group! The Lizard Years is made up of tracks from the albums Lizard, Gut Rock and Night Train LPs – at a time when Benny was veteran of the regional scene with the groups Giant Step, The Peels and Shark Move – stepping out front and backed by an incredible group of musicians going by the name Lizard. The music is tripped out, though accessible – with guitars ranging from proggy to funky, spacey keys and quite a bit of flute – nicely sung by Benny, in English, and with a really unique vibe that sweeps you right in! We were introduced to Benny's style of this period via Now Again's Those Shocking, Shaking Days comp – and it's great to have such a sprawling collection here – complete with a great booklet that puts it all in perspective. 30 tracks on 2CDs: "18 Years Old", "Come Closer", "Crime", "In 1965", "Sunny Day", "Cynthia", "Candle Light", "The Advantage Of Music In Me", "Circle Of Love", "The End Of The World", "Someday", "I'm Still In Luv Wit Ya'", "Gut Rock", "Night Train", "Stroll On", "Talked About My Girl", "Woman Of Desire", "Struggle For Life", "A Signal From Outer Space" and more. Candid, 1960. Very Good ... $9.99
Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp – two key modern figures of the 60s, working here together in a seminal session recorded at the start of the decade! The album's approach is definitely dictated by Taylor – as the tunes have a piano-driven quality that's quite different than most music Shepp would later record – although Archie still manages to get in plenty of great moments on tenor! You can really hear Cecil breaking out of his earlier sound on the record – stretching forth in some of the more freely expressive ways that would dominate later, yet never too free – almost with a hint of modern swing at some points. Other players include Buell Niedlinger on bass and either Sunny Murray or Dennis Charles on drums – and titles include "Air", "Eb", and "Port Of Call". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Von FreemanLive At The Dakota ... CD
Premonition, 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little live set from Von Freeman – and one of his best albums! Like some of his rare few sides from the 70s, this one features Von in a relaxed setting – blowing as the main lead soloist in front of a piano trio recorded at the Dakota Bar & Grill in St Paul, Minnesota, in 1996. Unlike other sets, though, this one really shows the edge that Von can have when he's working at his best. Gone are the easily-blown standards that never really illustrate the genius of Von that's been an influence on decades of players – from Andrew Hill to Malachi Favors to Eric Alexander. Freeman's range on the tenor is incredible – taking in a wealth of influences that runs from Coleman Hawkins to Ben Webster to Coltrane and Wayne Shorter – and while the rhythm section is comprised of younger players from St Paul, Von's the real talent here, and has plenty of room to work. Titles include "Footprints", "Caravan", "Crazy She Calls me", "Blues For Sunnyland", and "Bye Bye Blackbird". CD

✨✧ Junior ManceThat Lovin' Feelin'/Soul Of Hollywood ... CD
Milestone/ZYX (Germany), 1968/1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two very groovy albums by Junior Mance – recorded a decade apart, but both plenty darn great! First up is Soul Of Hollywood – One of the best Junior Mance albums from the early part of the decade – mostly because it's got Melba Liston arranging a larger group to back up Junior on the set! As on most albums of this type, Junior's almost better when he doesn't have to lead a trio – because he can concentrate on bouncing around solo-wise, hitting some strident soulful grooves, while not having to worry about leading the bass and drums along. Tracks include "Invitation", "Spellbound", "Never On Sunday", "Tara's Theme", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "One Eyed Jacks". Next up is That Lovin Feelin – a groovier sounding date from 1972, and one that builds nicely off the funkier styles that Mance developed at Atlantic Records – a mean, lean approach to soul jazz that was a bit hipper and more contemporary than some of his previous albums. The session has Mance on acoustic piano, working with Bob Cranshaw and Aaron Bell on bass, and Harold White, Oliver Jackson, or Jimmy Lovelace on drums – plus a bit of added percussion from Ralph McDonald on most tracks. And although the tunes are essentially trio ones, they've got a flowing, open approach to rhythm – especially when McDonald comes in – with bits of Latin, funk, and more coming into the sound. Titles include "Cubano Chant", "Boss Blues", "Lee's Lament", "Mean Old Frisco Blues", "Out South", and "When Sunny Gets Blue". CD

✨✧ Charlie BrownWhy Is Everybody Always Pickin On Me? ... CD
Contact/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty unusual album – and one by an obscure player who's not to be confused with Charles Brown, the blues singer – or Chuck Brown, the leader of the Soul Searchers! This Charlie Brown is a tenor player – listed as obscure even in the notes to the session – which is a laidback set of soul jazz numbers which feature Chuck's tenor over backings by Horace Ott. The overall style is similar to some of Hank Crawford's work from the time, particularly his albums on Kudu – with a polished feel to the backings, offset by some gutsier work by the main soloist – and the group is pretty great, and features Neal Creque on piano, Richard Tee on organ, Pretty Purdie on drums, and Billy Butler on guitar. Titles include "Back On The Track", "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Love The One You're With", and "(Funky) Sunny", probably the nicest track on the album. CD

✨✧ Davy GrahamHolly Kaleidoscope (180 gram colored vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Decca (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great record from the legendary Davy Graham – and one of his few to be recorded with wife Holly Gwyn! Holly's an American singer, and one who's maybe got a bit more of a folk blues approach than Davy – and their balance together is mighty nice – lots of that fantastic fingerpicking work that Graham brought to his guitar, which is here both acoustic and electric – often with that current of jazz that made his music stand out so much on the UK scene! Some tracks feature just Davy, some just Holly, and there's some nice instrumentals too – amidst titles that include "Flower Never Bend With The Rainfall", "Blackbird", "Blues At Gino's", "Mary Open The Door", "Fingerbuster", "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day", "Charlie", "I Know My Love", "Sunnymoon For Two", and "Wilt Thou Unkind".
