Mango, 1982. Used ... $2.99
King Sunny Ade's first major label LP, that helped him bring his juju music to the world. The blueprint of juju's laid down hear, with loads of intertwining guitar lines and tallking drums chattering away in a driving but never-too-busy fashion underneath. Includes "Sunny Ti De Arya", "Ja Funmi" and "365 Is My Number/The Message". CD
(Back artwork has some light water staining. Booklet/front is fine.)

King Sunny AdeSynchro System/Aura ... CD
Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

A nice set from King Sunny Ade, licensed to the Makossa label, but in the style of his African recordings, featuring a number of shorter compositions strung together into side-longsuites. Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 26.98
Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". VariousNigeria Soul Power 70 – Afro Funk, Afro Rock, Afro Disco ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A fantastic collection of lesser-known gems from the 70s scene in Nigeria – music that's a great counterpart to better-remembered Afro Funk and soul from international giants like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade! This set digs deep, and is a nicelly expanded version of a set that Soul Jazz issued years back as a limited edition 7" single box for Record Store Day – presented here with more music, and a detailed set of notes – really getting at the special scene that was taking place in Nigeria at the time, as the nation was rising to the top of the African scene with a fantastic criss-crossing of musical modes! There's definitely plenty of the funk promised in the title, and the "rock" is usually of the funky kind with great guitar work – and a few later cuts even pick up the pace with a bit of disco, but more in the fast-funk mode, and hardly the slick stuff of the American scene. Titles include "Africans Must Unite" and "Shake Hands" by Geraldo Pino, "We'll Get Home" by The Wings, "E Ye Ika Se" by Alhagi Prof Kollington Ayinala, "Kassa Kpa Sama Kpa" by Colomach, "Beware" by MFB, "You Are The One" by Tony Grey & The Ozimba Messengers, "Single Boy" by The Wings, "Sugar Baby" by Don Bruce & The Angels", "Power To The People" by Geraldo Pino, "Igba Alusi" by Original Wings, "Dance Of The Elephants" by Sonny Okosunds Ozziddi, and "Oba Erediauwa I" by Sonny Okosuns. CBS/Pacific Theatre Encore (Australia), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic funky set from the Sydney scene of the 60s – one of the coolest, cookingest combos to ever record in Australia at the time – and a group with a mix of mod and soul elements that reminds us of the best organ jazz recorded in London too! The group's led by the mighty Col Nolan – whose handling of the Hammond is wonderful – with lots of cool, compressed tones that work very well with the funky drums of John Sangster – a player that most folks know for his other records that feature vibes instead of drums! Sangster's great here kicking up a groove for the combo – and the tunes also feature plenty of tenor and flute from Col Loughnan, whose tight lines underscore all the best elements in the organ. There's a wonderful 60s nite club vibe running through the whole set – and titles include "Shades Of McSoul", "Sunny", "Blues For Madeline", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Rivera Mountain", and "Whatever It's Worth". ✨✧ Marva WhitneyIt's My Thing (expanded edition) ... LP
King/Soul Brother/Passion (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully expanded version of this classic of funky funky female soul! Marva Whitney was one of the greatest singers in the James Brown stable of stars during the late 60s – and she sang with a hard raw style worth of The Godfather himself! Brother James produced and wrote a good part of this classic album – and the record is one of the greatest JB albums of all time! Nearly every cut's a winner – like the sample classic "Unwind Yourself", which has a crazy corkscrew sax line, or the massive two-part remake of the Isley's "It's Your Thing" (titled "It's My Thing"), or the slowly funky "Get Out Of My Life", or the massive duet with Bobby Byrd "You Got To Have A Job", or the classic instrumental "In The Middle". This reissue is an expanded version, and it features a very excellent batch of tracks that were previously only issued as funky 45s! Tracks include "Sunny", "I Made A Mistake Because It's Only You (parts 1 & 2)", "You Got To Have A Job", "Shades Of (inst)", "I'm Tired I'm Tired I'm Tired", "This Girl's In Love With You", "He's The One", "Unwind Yourself", "What Kind Of Man", "Things Got To Get Better", "It's My Thing (parts 1 & 2)", and "Get Out Of My Life". 18 cuts in all. Charlie BrownWhy Is Everybody Always Pickin On Me? ... CD
Contact/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... About December 20, 2020
A pretty unusual album – and one by an obscure player who's not to be confused with Charles Brown, the blues singer – or Chuck Brown, the leader of the Soul Searchers! This Charlie Brown is a tenor player – listed as obscure even in the notes to the session – which is a laidback set of soul jazz numbers which feature Chuck's tenor over backings by Horace Ott. The overall style is similar to some of Hank Crawford's work from the time, particularly his albums on Kudu – with a polished feel to the backings, offset by some gutsier work by the main soloist – and the group is pretty great, and features Neal Creque on piano, Richard Tee on organ, Pretty Purdie on drums, and Billy Butler on guitar. Titles include "Back On The Track", "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Love The One You're With", and "(Funky) Sunny", probably the nicest track on the album. CD

Joe CastroPassion Flower – For Doris Duke (6CD set) ... CD
Sunnyside, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... $44.99 49.98
A massive tribute to this overlooked west coast pianist of the postwar years – an overstuffed set that features unreleased recordings, rare albums, and lots of other unusual material from the archives of the great Joe Castro! The set follows on the very illuminating Lush Life package from Sunnyside a few years back – and like that box, this one showcases just how many things Joe had going on at the time – even if he only got a chance to issued a rare few records as a leader! CD1 features a series of mid 50s trio recordings done in LA – with work from Paul Chambers, Leroy Vinnegar, and Red Mitchell on bass – plus Philly Joe Jones, Lawrence Marable, and Jimmy Pratt on drums. CD2 isn't Joe at all – but features his own recordings of a very young Paul Bley on piano (1956!), plus singer Flo Handy with backings from pianist George Handy. CD3 returns to the Castro catalog – and offers up the Atlantic album Mood Jazz, with arrangements from Neal Hefti and Ray Ellis – plus six more bonus tracks too. CD4 features another Atlantic album – the great Groove Funk Soul – again with unissued bonus tracks. CD5 features rare trio material, done for Joe's tiny Clover Records imprint – an unusual group with Teddy Kotick on bass and Paul Motian on drums – recorded in New York in 1965. CD6 features even more unusual material from the Clover vaults – a few more with the same trio - plus performances from Teddy Edwards and Bill Holman on tenor, Gabe Balthazar on flute and alto, Al Porcino on trumpet, and Bill Hood on baritone – plus orchestrations, tenor, and oboe from Bob Cooper. As with the previous box, the set is a stunning picture of this overlooked piano genius – filled with treasures in many different flavors! CD

Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.98
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". Liberty, 1967. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Beautiful 60s sunshine pop from Gary Lewis – sunny melodies and grand pop orchestrations by Jack Nitzsche – and a record that's been terribly overlooked for decades! Gary Lewis & The Playboys had fairly successful run before Gary was called to active service, and he cut this solo work during brief leaves from the service. It may not be groundbreaking work, it's got hallmark soaring 60s psych pop arrangements and melodies, but it sure is sweet stuff, and we can't think of any reason it's been so deeply buried for the past few decades! Verve, Late 60s. Very Good ... $4.99
A great little album of jazzy tracks from multi-talented reedman Jerome Richardson! The album's got a sort of jazzy meets Now Sound sound – sort of like the Benny Golson or Cal Tjader albums on Verve from the time, and it's a great one if you dig that sort of thing. The tracks are mostly covers of 60s pop tunes – like "Sunny", "Groove Merchant", "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon", "Where Is Love", "Ode To Billie Joe", and "No Matter What Shape" – and the mix of reeds, organ, and guitar is very nice! Candid (Germany), 1960. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp – two key modern figures of the 60s, working here together in a seminal session recorded at the start of the decade! The album's approach is definitely dictated by Taylor – as the tunes have a piano-driven quality that's quite different than most music Shepp would later record – although Archie still manages to get in plenty of great moments on tenor! You can really hear Cecil breaking out of his earlier sound on the record – stretching forth in some of the more freely expressive ways that would dominate later, yet never too free – almost with a hint of modern swing at some points. Other players include Buell Niedlinger on bass and either Sunny Murray or Dennis Charles on drums – and titles include "Air", "Number One", and "Port Of Call". CD features 3 takes of "Air" and 2 of "Number One". CD

Capitol/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 8CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
All of Prima's sides for Capitol from the late 50s and early 60s, plus wife and colleague Keely Smith and band leader Sam Butera's solo work from the era in an incredible 8 CD box! We often think of Louis as kinda of a loungey, Vegas cool cat, but what is so awesome about the material you'll find here is how furiously manic so much of it is. The first 3 discs document Prima at his wild, hard-swinging studio best – and could give Tito Puente a run for his money in the sweaty big-beat department! Tracks include "Buona Sera", "Just A Gigolo/I A'int Got Nobody ", "Jump, Jive, And Wail", "The Closer To The Bone", "Pennies From Heaven", "Pump Song", "Fee Fio Foo", "Lazy River", "I've Got You Under My Skin", and tons more. Discs 4 covers live sets at the Harrah's Club and the Sahara, and includes "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "A Foggy Day", "Robin Hood", "Judy", and "Greenback Dollar Bill". Discs 5 & 6 cover Keely's sweeter but nearly as great sides, with Nelson Riddle and others, and tracks include "I Wish You Love", "It's Magic", and "Nothing In Common" and "How Are Ya' Fixed For Love?" with Frank Sinatra. Finally, Sam Butera's solo work is collected on the last 2 discs, returning things to Prima-style rockin' jazz, and including "Bim Bam", "Twinkle In Your Eye", "Bugs", "Tennessee Waltz", "Better Twist Now Baby", and "I'll Feel Good All Over". Great stuff from one of the tightest working units from the era, and a real treat to have in one place! CD

✨✧ Albert Ayler with Don CherryEuropean Recordings Autumn 1964 Revisited ... CD
Hat Art/Ezz-Thetics (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge 2CD set – one that features important European work that saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded with trumpeter Don Cherry! CD1 brings together six tracks from Albert Ayler's Hilversum Radio sessions from 1964 – plus an additional three tracks recorded in Denmark a few months earlier! The first six titles are a famous performance by a famous group set loose on a European tour in 1964 – Ayler on tenor, Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murry on drums – recorded in The Netherlands for a small audience in a Dutch radio studio! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great, and Murray is completely freed up from rhythm at points, to fly beautifully with the rest – on titles that include "Angels", "CAC", "Infant Happiness", "Ghosts", and "No Name". The same group performs on the final three tracks – recorded in Copenhagen for Danish Radio, with an equally great level of clarity – on "Saints", "Spirits", and "Vibrations". The interplay between Ayler and Cherry is especially great – echoing the latter's material with Ornette Coleman, but with a different sort of edge! CD2 features amazing live material from 1964 – work that was recorded at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, right around the same time that Albert Ayler recorded his album for Debut Records – and a set that has his quartet in even more firey formation overall! The tracks are long, and Ayler is completely unbridled – at a level that really shows not only how much of a leader he was to the American avant underground, but what an inspiration he was to the European free scene too – who could only help but take a big cue from his work here on tenor! The group also features equally wonderful work from Don Cherry on cornet – sounding quite different than when with Ornette Coleman – plus bass from Gary Peacock, whose dark tones really set the mood – and drums from Sunny Murray, who is also at an explosive point in his career. The material is remastered wonderfully, with permission from Albert Ayler's estate – and titles include "Mothers", "Saints", "Vibrations", Spirits", "Children", and a shorter "Spirits". CD

ABC/Robinsongs (UK), 1978/1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pair of albums from saxophonist Wilton Felder – back to back on a single CD! We All Have A Star offers up solo sounds from Crusaders reedman Wilton Felder – a really great set that's very much in the best vibe of his larger group at the time – yet one that also offers up a stronger focus on Wilton's sublime solo work on tenor! The album's got plenty of Crusaders help on board – given that Stix Hooper and Joe Sample produced the set along with Wilton – and the vibe's a wonderful blend of electric backings, with especially great keyboard lines, and Felder's well-phrased saxophone lines over the top! A few cuts feature vocals – sung by Angela Bryant or Debbie Demoia Ross – and titles include "We All Have A Star", "I Know Who I Am", "The Cycles Of Time", "Why Believe", "Ride On", and "You & Me & Ecstasy". Inherit The Wind is one of the best Crusaders-related solo projects – a soulful bit of fusion from saxophonist Wilton Felder, co-produced with his fellow Crusaders! The album's got the best sunny finish of the group's late 70s albums – traces of Latin, funk, and soul bubbling through a warm jazzy mix – staying soulful all the way through, and coming up with a sound that's smooth, but never sleepy. The blueprint for a million other records – none of which ever sounded this good! Titles include "Insight", "LA Light", "Until The Morning Comes", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "Inherit The Wind". A really great record from the legendary Davy Graham – and one of his few to be recorded with wife Holly Gwyn! Holly's an American singer, and one who's maybe got a bit more of a folk blues approach than Davy – and their balance together is mighty nice – lots of that fantastic fingerpicking work that Graham brought to his guitar, which is here both acoustic and electric – often with that current of jazz that made his music stand out so much on the UK scene! Some tracks feature just Davy, some just Holly, and there's some nice instrumentals too – amidst titles that include "Flower Never Bend With The Rainfall", "Blackbird", "Blues At Gino's", "Mary Open The Door", "Fingerbuster", "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day", "Charlie", "I Know My Love", "Sunnymoon For Two", and "Wilt Thou Unkind". A set dedicated to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim, but one that's hardly just the usual variation on his classic numbers – as only a few tunes here are actually by the composer, and all of the music has that fresh sort of sparkle that we always love in the Brazilian jazz material from drummer Duduka Da Fonseca! The core pairing here is Duduka and pianist Helio Alves, who also plays Fender Rhodes on some numbers too – and the duo get help from singer Maucha Adnet on about half the record, a key part of this trio who've been working together for over twenty five years. The set also features bass from Hans Glawischnig, saxes and flute from Billy Drewes, and guitar from Romero Lubambo – on titles that include "Pato Preto", "Gemini Man", "Helium", "A Vontade Mesmo", "Polo Pony", "Pedro Bonita Da Gavea", "A Correnteza", and "Untitled".
