✨✧ Oliver Nelson/King Curtis/Jimmy ForrestSoul Battle (with bonus track) ... CD
Prestige, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
This is the kind of battle we like to see! Three heavy tenors – Nelson, King, and Jimmy Forrest – come head to head in a relaxed set of tunes cut in that Prestige blowing session mode, but tweaked with a bit more tightness, in the style of some of the label's emerging soul jazz sides of the 60s. Nelson's gutsy tenor will shock you if you haven't heard him in this sort of less restrained setting – and Forrest's work from this time is always a treat. Titles include "Blues For MF", "Anacruses", "Perdido", and "In Passing". Includes the bonus track "Soul Street". CD

Prestige/Esquire (UK), 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The "new scene" of King Curtis here is a jazz one – as Prestige takes him into the studio, and backs up his tenor with accompaniment from Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Oliver Jackson – plus trumpet from Nat Adderley, billed on the back as "Little Brother" for contractual reasons! The tracks are long and open, with less of King's tenor tricks, and more of a laidback Gene Ammons-ish style of blowing. Titles include "Little Brother Soul", "In A Funky Groove", "Have You Heard", and "Da Duh Duh". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oliver LakeClevont Fitzhubert ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the sharpest work we've heard from Oliver Lake during the early 80s – a relatively free, improvised album that almost recalls some of his loft jazz recordings of the 70s! The group's a quartet – with Lake on alto, soprano sax, and flute – and other players include Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Donald Smith on piano, and Pheeroan AkLaff on drums – the last of whom brings this punched-up energy to many of the tunes – driving them forward, even when the horns are frenetic, in a way that really helps make the album a cut above. Smith gets in a few sensitive moments – and one number features some beautifully sweet flute from Lake – easily one of our favorite points on the record. Titles include "November 80", "Sop", "Clevont Fitzhubert", "King", and "Hmbay". CD

✨✧ James BrownSoul On Top (with bonus track) ... CD
King/Verve, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A different James Brown album – but a nice one! James doesn't sing soul, so much as jazz – in front of large backings by Louis Bellson, with arrangements by Oliver Nelson that are in his best 60s soul mode – and which give the album a very very groovy feel overall! The record's not funky, but James' vocals are plenty darn soulful – and the album is proof that he could be a huge talent in just about any mode that he chose – shining with a brilliance that was irrepressible! James covers a few of his older tracks on the album, and sings a few other pop standards – and titles include nice versions of "It's Magic", "The Man In The Glass", "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", "That's My Desire", and "I Need Your Key (To Turn Me On)". CD features the previously unissued bonus track "There Was A Time" – plus the full, unedited versions of 4 other tracks – appearing here for the first time ever! CD

Prestige/OJC, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A late 60s set, but one that recalls the sweet swinging style of Prestige Records' Swingville sessions from the early part of the decade! Illinois Jacquet sounds wonderful here on tenor (and a bit of bassoon on one track!) – blowing with plenty of open space amidst a lineup that includes Tiny Grimes on guitar, Wynton Kelly on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Oliver Jackson on drums. The approach is kind of a mix of Jacquet's mid 60s work for Argo/Cadet, with some of the late 50s non-bop swing sessions issued by Prestige – and titles include "The Galloping Latin", "Still King", "For Once In My Life", and "Every Day". ✨✧ Jimmy Smith & Wes MontgomeryFurther Adventures of Jimmy & Wes ... CD
Verve, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second great session from two of Verve's biggest jazz stars of the 60s – organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery – an unlikely pair, to be sure, but one who work great together on the set! The real change here is in Wes' playing – as it's shifted from the mellower style used over larger backings on most of his Verve sets, back to the rootsier soul jazz tone of his earliest recordings from his days on the Indianapolis scene. Jimmy and Wes are working with a core combo that includes Grady Tate on drums and Ray Barretto on conga – making for a lean organ/guitar groove that's only got percussion to kick it along. Titles include "Call Me", "OGD", "King Of The Road", "Mellow Mood", and "Maybe September" – plus a great version of "Milestones" that features some hard swinging larger backings from Oliver Nelson! ✨✧ Leo's FiveDirect From The Blue Note Club ... CD
LG/Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue look at the mini-soul empire of Leo Gooden – an tiny little enclave in East St Louis that was making some mighty hip music in the early 60s! Gooden wore many hats at the time – politician, club owner, and local businessman – but he also put together his own band and record label, and worked in a very hip mix of R&B and 60s soul jazz modes! Through his nightclub, The Blue Note, Gooden came into contact with a variety of great musicians, both national and local – and he brought their inspiration to play on sessions recorded here for his LG family of labels – issued on a handful of singles and two rare LPs. Although rough-edged at times, these tracks have a really great sound – kind of a grittier take on the Prestige Records groove of the 60s – helped out by musicians who include Oliver Nelson and Hamiet Bluiett – and singers who include Albert King and Charles Drain. The package is a bit loose on discographical details, but definitely includes all the best moments from these mighty years on the East St Louis scene – and the full story in the notes more than helps to fill in the gaps in Gooden's compelling tale. The titles by Leo's Five – Gooden's group – are all hip jazz instrumentals, often with a strong mix of Hammond, guitar, and tenor – and these titles include "Hold It", "Sunrise Serenade", "Something You Got", "Tippin", "Johnnie Come Marching Home (Country Style)", "Minor Over Matter", "Mop Water", "Fredrick's Dream", and "Cookin With Chezie Mae". Other cuts include "COD" and "Worsome Baby" by Albert King, "So Glad" and "Stop & Think About It Baby" by Charles Drain, "Winkee Do" and "Ugly Ugly" by Leo Gooden, and "Let's Do The Cat" by Jamie Ross. Count Basie with Oliver NelsonAfrique ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
One of the deepest albums that Count Basie ever recorded – thanks to some great arrangements and backings by Oliver Nelson! Nelson's working in the same groovy mode he used with Jimmy Smith's excellent Verve sessions – and although the record doesn't have the same sort of star soloist in the lead, the Basie band members do a great job of trading off solos over the enigmatic backings crafted by Nelson. A number of the tracks have a Latin flair – and work on electric bass grooves that push the set farther than the usual Basie outing of the time – with a flavor that's right up there with the hippest Nelson sessions for Flying Dutchman, and maybe even a bit like spiritual ensemble material too. Titles include versions of Albert Ayler's "Love Flower" and Pharoah Sanders' "Japan", plus originals by Nelson like "Afrique", "Kilimanjaro", and "African Sunrise". CD

Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderfully sweet work from trumpeter Charlie Shavers – a set that has Shavers blowing on ballads over larger orchestrations – in a style that's really our favorite side of his music! Charlie's horn already has a long legacy by the time of this record – a slightly mature style that sounds wonderfully as he drifts magically over string-heavy backings from Sy Oliver – in a mode that's warm and lush, yet also beautifully soulful, and manages to really personalize the familiar tunes in the set. Titles include "Stella By Starlight", "Ill Wind", "Stormy Weather", "Out Of Nowhere", "Stardust", and "I Cover The Waterfront". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oliver NelsonSound Pieces ... LP
Impulse, 1966. Very Good- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most impressive albums ever from arranger Oliver Nelson – a set that really shows the full depth of his mighty talents! Side one features Nelson working with a larger orchestra – similar to the kind of ensemble he arranged for other artists in the 60s, but handled here with an open, searching sort of sound – really impressive modern jazz elements on the title track, then some sweeter, warmer soul sounds on a few shorter numbers too! Nelson plays soprano sax, and his use of the instrument is definitely Coltrane-informed at times – and a nice change from his more familiar alto. The flipside features just a quartet – Oliver again on soprano sax – plus Steve Kuhn on piano, Ron Carter bass, and Grady Tate on drums. With Kuhn on piano, bringing a nice modern edge that works perfectly with the soprano. Titles include "Sound Piece For Jazz Orchestra", "Patterns", "Flute Salad", "The Lady From Girl Talk", and "Elegy For A Duck". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oliver LakeEdge-Ing ... CD
Soul Note/Black Saint (Italy), 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
The cover looks a bit kitschy and electric, but the album's a real back to basics album for Oliver Lake – a standout set from the time, and a wonderfully soulful session throughout! The album has Lake playing alto sax throughout – working with a hip quartet that includes Charles Eubanks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – all players who could really go way outside if they wanted, but manage to hold right on the edge of a groove here with Lake – not really playing straight, but keeping a soulful pulse on most numbers – which also seems to drive Oliver into some tighter formation as well. His sharp alto really cuts nicely against the rhythm section – and the album's got a fresh, focused feel that may well make it one of the best Lake recordings for Black Saint. Titles include "Shiffs", "Peanut Butter", "Edge-ing", "Scene One", and "Zaki". CD

A huge book of jazz reviews from the UK – all penned by journalist Chris Searle from the Morning Star – and presented here with a bonus 2CD set of rare material from the UK scene! The CD is really incredible – and is almost worth the price of the package alone – as it features never-issued work that echoes some of the ideas in the book – served up by some of the luminaries we've come to love from the Jazz In Britain label! Straight, strong, and soulful sounds from guitarist Kenny Burrell – quite possibly one of his best albums of the 60s, thanks to a really well-focused sound throughout! The groove here is nice and tight – a cooking little rhythm section that features Richard Wyands on piano, Martin Rivera on bass, and Oliver Jackson on drums – snapping away on the kit on some of the best tracks, and really helping Burrell to hit this groove that's mighty nice! A great set of tracks that represents some of Chris Connor's first recordings as a solo act – culled from earlier ep and 10" releases, and issued here on a full LP with a total of 14 tracks. Backing is by three groups – the Ellis Larkin Trio, Vinnie Burke's Quartet, and Sy Oliver's Orchestra – and Chris is in fine fine form, vocalizing with that icy tone we love so much, a bit sad, and a bit mellow, but always heartfelt, without the forced emotion of other singers of her generation. Titles include "Stella By Starlight", "Goodbye", "Spring Is Here", "Ask Me", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Try A Little Tenderness", and "He's Coming Home". LP, Vinyl record album

Victor/Lawson (Japan), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $46.99 59.99
A pivotal album from this hip Japanese jazz group – one that really sees them finding their own path forward, and working with really unusual material and stretching out on some longer tracks than before! The tunes here ere arranged by Masahiko Sato, Masao Yagi, Norio Maeda, and Kiyoshi Yamaya – most of whom wrote the material, along with Oliver Nelson – the latter of whom might be a good reference here, as the group are breaking down older large jazz group modes, and finding a way to soar with a new sense of spirit and soul – similar to Nelson's best recordings! Leader Hara blows some great tenor solos, and other players include Takao Naoi on guitar, Toshiko Ogawa on piano, and Hiroshi Suzuki on trombone – on titles that include "Flexibility", "Flute Salad", "Elegy For A Duck", "Dark Horse", "Little Giant", "Patterns", and "Orbit 8:11". United Artists, 1966. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Groovy Lena Horne from the 60s – an album that's a heck of a lot hipper and more swinging than most of her sets from a decade before! That unmistakable Horne style of singing is still very much in place here – but the backings are often tightly punctuated, with a gently soulful groove that definitely lives up to the title, and which serves up most of the tracks with a nice little sense of rhythm. Ray Ellis is working here with Lena on the backings – and his style is arguably a bit groovier than usual too, with more of the syncopations you might find in mid 60s Quincy Jones or Oliver Nelson. Titles include "I Got A Worried Man", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "Love Bug", "Taste Of Honey", "I'd Like To Hear It Sometime", and "You Know What To Do". LP, Vinyl record album

Palm/Souffle Continu (France), Early 1970s. New Copy 7LP ... $159.99 169.99
A massive set of music – and one that includes all the rare Palm label recordings made by reedman Byard Lancaster in Paris during the 70s! First up is Us – a set that features a really freewheeling trio brought together under the leadership of reedman Byard Lancaster – a group that features the great AACM drummer Steve McCall, who you'll know from his work in another trio, Air – and bassist Sylvain Marc, who plays an electric version of his instrument on the set! There's a very strong AACM vibe to the music – a balance between personal, spiritual moments – and others that have the trio really taking off, especially when McCall really kicks it up on drums – a performance that really seems to show the versatility of Lancaster, as he blows beautifully on alto, tenor, and flute. Both McCall and Byard have some great solo moments – and the title track actually gets a bit funky too, in sort of an early Joe McPhee mode! Titles include "Just Test", "Us", "John III", "Flore", and "McCall All". Next is Mother Africa – one of the boldest statements ever made by reedman Byard Lancaster – a really freewheeling live set recorded in Paris, and done with the hard-burning energy that marked some of the classic late 60s sessions for BYG! Lancaster's key musical partner here is trumpeter Clint Jackson III, who's equally on fire here – effortlessly moving next to Byard as the pair chop up sound and space while spinning out these really amazing improvisations – in the company of Jean-Francois Catoire on both acoustic and electric bass, Keno Speller on percussion, and Jonathan Dickinson. And while the album definitely resonates with the very free jazz in Paris in 1969, it also has some moments of structure that really balance things out as well – almost working as a bridge to the loft jazz scene, especially with some of the spiritual currents that Byard brings to the music. Titles include "We The Blessed" and "Mother Africa". The album Exactement features some of the most beautiful, most introspective music ever recorded by the great Byard Lancaster – a set that brings his work on reeds and piano into play with the percussion of Keno Speller! Lancaster is clearly the driving force here – there are a lot of fantastic solo passages, many with a more tuneful sense of structure than some of Byard's freer work – and his work on piano, flute, bass clarinet, and soprano sax is stunning throughout – augmented by Speller in just the right ways! One track uses an octavoice to create a really wonderful sound – almost a more spiritual take on territory explored by Eddie Harris – and the double-length set is overflowing with brilliance, with tracks that include "Keno Exactement", "Virginia", "Dr Oliver W Lancaster", "Palm Sunday", "C Marianne Alicia", and "Providence Baptist Church". Funny Funky Rib Crib is a rare French session from American reedman Byard Lancaster – and easily one of his funkiest albums ever! The set's got a hip mix of avant jazz and groovier rhythms – bits of guitar and keyboards alongside sharper reeds and percussion – all in a way that's a bit like some of the funky French work cut by Hal Singer! Byard's still as progressive as ever, but focused more on the groove than before – not in a commercial way, but in a style that pushes his music strongly forward to the people. Lancaster plays mostly sax, but also a bit of flute and piano, and even vocalizes on one cut too – and other players include Francois Nyombo on guitar, Francois Tusques on electric piano, Clint Jackson on trumpet, Joseph Traindl on trombone, Del Rabenja on tenor, and both Marc Sylvain and Steve McCall on drums. Titles include "Rib Crib (parts 1 & 2)", "Dogtown", "Loving Kindness", "Work & Pray", and "Just Test". The set also features the rare extended track "Love Always" – originally for the sessions that created Mother Africa. LP, Vinyl record album

Mundell LoweBlues For A Stripper & Other Exciting Sounds ... LP
Parker, 1961. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Great music from jazz guitarist Mundell Lowe – a set that was originally written as the soundtrack for an early 60s sexploitation film, Satin In High Heels – but which works equally well as a jazz album on its own! Lowe's in a slightly different setting than on some of his earlier records – working with larger arrangements that include a rich array of sounds and tunes from Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, Clark Terry and Joe Newman on trumpets, Al Cohn and Oliver Nelson on tenor, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, and Phil Woods on alto sax – an all-star lineup who make the music sound way better than you might expect! Lowe's guitar gets a lot of center space in the sound – providing the right sort of slinky, crime jazz-styled elements – and titles include "Coffee Coffee", "Lake In the Woods", "Pattern Of Evil", "Blues For A Stripper", and "East Side Drive In". Flora/Norske Albumklassikere (Norway), 1972. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
A record that's every bit as groovy as you might guess from its cover and title – filled with sweet Hammond organ lines from Henryk Lysiak, who really opens up his solos in a great way! The look of the set might make you think that it's less jazz than easy instrumental, but Henryk's definitely a player who knows how to solo – and works here on tracks that feature slightly larger backings, but in a way that then makes it clear that the organ is the star of the show – a bit like the way that Oliver Nelson's charts worked so well for Jimmy Smith on Verve, but served up here with more of a 70s vibe overall! Titles include "The Happening", "Inner City Blues", "Carry Your Own Load", "My Cheri Amour", "How About You", "For Once In My Life", and "Yester Me Yester You Yesterday". CD

✨✧ Jimmy McGriffBig Band ... LP
Solid State, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $7.99
A Basie tribute, but a really smoking one – thanks to some hard swinging arrangements from Manny Albam, and plenty of heavy Hammond from the great Jimmy McGriff! The tracks are mostly numbers from the Count Basie songbook of the 50s and 60s, but they're strongly reworked here with a swinging 60s vibe – played with lots of strong horn work in the background, all used as a perfect foil for Jimmy's leaner organ solos over the top! The style's quite similar to other big band organ work of the time – particularly records made by Jimmy Smith in collaboration with Oliver Nelson, or Jack McDuff with Benny Golson – and McGriff's organ comes through nice and clean in the mix, with that sharply fluttering sound that really made him one of the true standouts of the 60s. Fantastic funk from one of the hippest combos currently working on the planet – the mighty Misha Panfilov Sound Combo, a group who effortlessly blend 70s-style funk with some sweet spacey sounds! The "astral" in the title here is very well-placed – as there's a slightly cosmic vibe to the cuts – almost as if Stereolab had formed a funk combo, as there's all these cool moogy and thereminy bits all throughout the music – while the drums pound with funky intensity, the guitars riff with non-stop sharpness, and the whole thing grooves like the kind of funk we should have sent out on the Voyager probe! Fantastic stuff – and a jazz remix project with a real difference! The difference here is that instead of taking older jazz tracks and re-doing them in dance music versions, the set takes original dance tracks and re-does them in jazz versions! The result is wonderful – a warm-voiced album that's one of our favorite releases of the year, and proof that there's a beating heart of soul in the hipster underground! The set brings together talents that are known for their work in bridging both worlds of music – and performers on the record include Till Bronner, Erik Truffaz, Nathan Haines, Matthias Vogt, and Oliver Bott. Instrumentation includes vibes, piano, trumpet, tenor, and lots of wonderful guest vocals – and the album features covers of "Cupid & Orlando" by Aromabar, "Release Your Mind" by Soulpatrol, "People Come Running" by Taxi, "Torch Of Freedom" by Cleveland Watkiss, "The Way I Swing" by DJ Matt, "Arena" by Kosma, and "Mental Strength" by Megashire. Impulse/Verve, 1965. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
One of the most unique Sonny Rollins albums of the 60s – a soundtrack effort for a British film that starred a young Michael Caine – yet a set that's served up with all the sharp edges you might expect from some of Rollins' other records of the decade! The tenorist is in a slightly different setting here – working with a larger array of players that are arranged by Oliver Nelson – but not in that "swinging combo backing a soloist" that Nelson used on other projects, and there's a more unified, integrated approach going on here – Sonny's tenor blended with the alto of Phil Woods, baritone of Danny Bank, and trombone of either JJ Johnson or Jimmy Cleveland, depending on the track. A young Roger Kellaway adds in some nicely lyrical work on piano, Kenny Burrell is in the group on guitar – and titles include the long "Alfie's Theme" – plus the shorter "On Impulse", "Alfie's Theme Differently", Street Runner With Child", and "Transition Theme For Minor Blues Or Little Malcolm Loves His Dad" – all originals by Rollins. Columbia, 1965. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent album of Latin material from Herbie Mann – and proof that he's equally great in just about any setting! The album's a rare Columbia Records outing from Herbie – but it's easily one of his greatest of the 60s, thanks to some really smoking arrangements from Oliver Nelson – plus an all-star cast of players that includes Carmell Jones, Dave Pike, Jimmy Heath, Patato Valdez, Willie Bobo, Charlie Palmieri, and a young Chick Corea on piano! Tracks are short, tight, and very rhythmic – grooving in a snapping approach to Latin that's filled with plenty of soul, but which also features plenty of jazzy touches as well. A few tunes here are familiar, but they're given wonderful new treatment by Herbie and Nelson – and the record easily beats most Verve or Impulse sessions of this type at their own game! Tracks include "Bijou", "Ave Maria Morena", "Watermelon Man", "Interlude", "Let's Boom Chitty Boom", "Senor Blues", "Jungle Fantasy", and "Jive Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

Very groovy work from Herbie Mann – as you might guess from the image on the cover! The set's got a mod sort of 60s feel – hinted at by the title's reference to the Our Man Flint spy movies of the time – and Herbie keeps things tight and soulful throughout – serving up smoking solos over jazzy backings from Jimmy Wisner, Arif Mardin, Oliver Nelson, and Richard Wess. There's definitely a touch of the Atlantic Records soul instrumental sound at times – but we mean that in a great way, with a strong focus on the rhythms as much as the solos. Titles include an early version of The Crusaders' "Scratch", plus "Happy Brass", "Good Lovin", "Our Man Flint", "Theme From Malamondo", "Monday Monday", and "Philly Dog". LP, Vinyl record album

Louis Armstrong hits the Flying Dutchman label – and unlocks a whole new spiritual side of his talents – a mode that's quite different than some of his crossover pop of the 60s! The style here has a bit of righteous elements in the lyrics, and lots of spiritual jazz in the backings – with full arrangements from Oliver Nelson – who heads up a dream lineup that includes Billy Harper on tenor, and either Chico Hamilton or Pretty Purdie on drums! Even more amazing is a guest appearance from Leon Thomas – who sings on a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Proof that Azymuth were one of the few groups who could keep things real at a time when most of their fusion contemporaries were sounding cloying and commercial! The album's got a well-rounded sound that really shows the group's roots in the 70s, and their wonderful evolution over the years – that keyboard-heavy sound that's always warm and soulful, and never too tinny or beat-heavy. Jose Roberto Bertrami's keys come across with a 70s warmth that most groups were lacking by this time – and the backing from Alex Maheiros on bass and Ivan Conti is always very subtle, and simple too – swirled up alongside the keyboards, and mixed in with a few occasional bits of guest instrumentation – including trumpet from Marcio Montarroyos on one track, and flugelhorn from Paulinho Olivera on a few more. ✨✧ Eddie Lockjaw Davis Big BandTrane Whistle ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Don't pass this one up! Although lots of other albums by Eddie Lockjaw Davis are laidback quartet and quintet sessions, done in a soul jazz organ/tenor mode – this session features Eddie working with stunning bigger band backings, in a searingly soulful sound that's simply incredible! The leadoff track, "Trane Whistle", has Lockjaw really working new waves of sound into his tenor sax – screaming the horn in a way that you thought you'd never hear, and playing with tones that are a lot darker than usual! The set moves on from there in a nice batch of material that includes "Whole Nelson" and "Stolen Moments", two fantastic originals by Oliver Nelson, who also arranged the album – and takes a great deal of responsibility for the strength of the set. The record shows a whole new side of Davis' talents – one that was barely if ever recorded like this again – and which is made even better by the presence of freshly modern players that include Eric Dolphy, Richard Williams, Melba Liston, and Roy Haynes. Great stuff! CD

A standout early session from organist Shirley Scott – noteworthy in that it's a quintet recording, different than Shirley's mostly-trio output from the time! Here, she's working in a group that includes Oliver Nelson on tenor sax and Joe Newman on trumpet – and Nelson's edgey tone adds a lot to the record, as it did on other Prestige sides from the same time – a deeper soul vibe than you might normally get from Shirley alone on the Hammond. BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mind-expanding look at Memphis soul – one that gets way past common cliches about the city and its music! There's a heavy dose of funk in the mix on most numbers here – a gritty, fuzzy approach to the music that seems slightly borrowed from the Detroit scene at the end of the 60s – then mixed with some rougher, rootsier southern soul styles too! But other tracks take on a more sophisticated sound too – some of the righteous elements that hit Stax in the post-1968 period, especially as Isaac Hayes and David Porter were working on their own great solo work. Yet unlike Hayes and Porter, most of the artists here are much lesser-known – singers and groups who never charted big, but who got the chance to record for Memphis labels like XL, Stax, Select-O-Hits, and Sounds Of Memphis. CD features 20 tracks in all – and titles include "Dig It" by The Optimistics, "Mississippi Mud" by Smithsonian, "Two Paces Ahead Of Love" by Willie Walker, "Pullin" by The Minits, "It's Bump Time" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "Blackrock Yeah Yeah" by Blackrock, "Keep The Faith" by Mel & Tim, "Watch Dog (alt)" by Barbara & The Browns, "Come What May" by John Gary Williams, "Strange Things" by Art Jerry Miller, "Shake" by The Ovations, "Tip Toeing" by Alvin Cash, "The Way Of Me" by Hannon, "Take A Giant Step" by LaCleve Milon, "Papa Killed A Chicken" by Willie Toliver, and "Don't Boom Boom" by Lillian Hale. Seminal pre-Verve work by Ella Fitzgerald – a variety of early singles from the late 40s and early 50s, collected together in one full album by Decca! Even at this point in her career, the Fitzgerald magic is firmly in place – sensitively taking on familiar lyrics on some tunes, scatting breezily on others – all with a lot more jazz in the mix than her contemporaries, but not nearly as much pyrotechnics as the bebop-era vocalese crowd. Backings are by Sy Oliver on many numbers, by small groups on others – and a few tracks feature backing vocals by the Ray Charles singers. Titles include "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Rough Ridin", "Smooth Sailing", "Later", "Ella Hums The Blues", "How High The Moon", "Air Mail Special", and "Flying Home". LP, Vinyl record album

ICP (Germany), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
The mighty Misha Mengelberg is a wonderful force in this recording by the larger ICP group – not only composing most of the original song structures, but also providing the kind of piano work that initially made the group so great – linking their more contemporary creation to an older legacy of postwar modern jazz! The record bristles with character and creative fire right from the start – with a bit of vocalization from Misha, alongside reeds from Ab Baars, Tobias Delius, and Michael Moore – plus trumpet from Thomas Heberer, trombone from Wolter Wierbos, bass from Ernst Glerum, cello from Tristan Honsinger, violin from Mary Oliver, and fantastic work on drums from Han Bennink – who's the other key musical bookend in the set. Most tracks are short, and wonderfully dynamic – and titles include "Let's Climb A Hill", "Opa", "Tuinek", "Aan & Uit", "Barbaric", and "Back To Lippiza". CD

Mighty tenor from the great Budd Johnson – an album titled with a similar name to one of his Chess Records sessions – but done in a very different vibe! This set has an easygoing swing to it – that timeless approach that made the Black & Blue label material feel classic, even at the time of its release – and which has only made the label's productions sound better and better over the years! Budd's got lots of room to stretch out and blow in his solos – as does Charlie Shavers on trumpet, and Andre Persiany on piano – working here in a quintet with Roland Lobliegois on bass and Oliver Jackson on drums. The set's worth it alone for the ten minute title track "Ya Ya" – and other titles include "Body & Soul", "I'll Be Seeing You", "The Best Things In Life Are Free", and "In A Mellowtone". Prestige, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
It's always something nice when Etta Jones makes a record – but this one is especially so, thanks to some intimate small group backing from players who include Oliver Nelson, Lem Winchester, Wally Richardson, and Richard Wyands! The style is relatively intimate throughout – more late nite than some of Jones' other records, in a way that really works well for her vocals, and takes her away from some of the crossover pop modes of her albums that sound a bit more like Gloria Lynne. Titles include "Easy Living", "Through A Long And Sleepless Night", "My Heart Tells Me", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "That's All There Is To That", "Love Is The Thing", and "Canadian Sunset". Mercury, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Call it a love of dancers or just plain Quincy Jones groove – this album's filled with tight tracks that are a perfect showcase for the ways in which Quincy had such a huge influence on jazz in the 60s! The tunes are often old standards, but done here in a style that's nicely syncopated – taking on that Jones love of space and sound, and working it through some big band tracks at a level that creates grooves that are a lot hipper than you'd hear on albums like this from most of his contemporaries! Players are all top-notch – and include Benny Bailey and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Melba Liston and Curtis Fuller on trombones, Jerome Richardson and Oliver Nelson on tenor, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Patti Brown on piano, and Les Spann on guitar and flute. Heck, even liner notes from Dorothy Kilgallen can't keep this one from being nice – and titles include "Chinese Checkers", "Tone Poem", "G'Wan Train", "Pleasingly Plump", and "A Sunday Kind Of Love". New Jazz/OJC, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album that's as swinging as it is exotic! The record really picks up the groove from Lateef's earlier sides for Savoy – and features a mixture of hardbop and more "Eastern" themed musical images, all extremely compelling, and a wonderful look at a jazz underground that rarely got a voice on record. Lateef plays tenor, but also flute and argol in a snaking moody way – and he's joined by a group that features Wilbur Harden, Hugh Lawson, Ernie Farrow, and Oliver Jackson, all of whom play the usual bass, piano, drums, plus some odd bits on percussion and strange instruments. Killer large group material from Hammond giant Brother Jack McDuff – a set that hints at some of the more unusual settings he would explore at the end of the 60s! Arrangements here are by Benny Golson – who does a great job of kicking up the groove for the core McDuff quartet – that great lineup that features a young George Benson on guitar, Red Holloway on tenor, and the mighty Joe Dukes on drums! The record's a bit inspired by some of the Jimmy Smith sessions with Oliver Nelson, but comes off in a very different way – thanks to the soulful swing of the Golson backings, and the always-great sense of tone and timing from Jack. A stunner from Jimmy Smith – and quite possibly one of his greatest records for Verve! The set has Jimmy working with arranger Oliver Nelson – in a setting that's got big band backings, but done in a style that's cool enough to cut through all the BS of similar sessions. There's no hoke at all – just a lean and soulful approach that has Nelson serving up a powerhouse jazzy groove underneath – and Jimmy soloing madly over the top! The album's filled with great tunes too – including a fab cover of "Mission Impossible", the original "Big Boss Man", a version of Richard Evans' "Burning Spear", and great takes on "Valley Of The Dolls" and "The Gentle Rain". ✨✧ VariousImpulsive – Revolutionary Jazz Reworked ... CD
Impulse, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing reworking of the Impulse Records groove – and a fitting tribute to one of the hippest jazz labels ever! The set's got a depth and brilliance that goes far beyond all other remix projects of its type – with none of the easy tricks of the Verve Remix project, or the off-pace dancefloor styles of the Motown one. Instead, the producers here really stay in the range of the label's original soulful and spiritual approach to jazz – in a way that draws from the older work for inspiration, but remakes it with a sound that's often quite respectful of the original! One of the key factors of the set is the strength of the remixers – as most here have a clearly demonstrated love and understanding of the original work, and weren't just introduced to the records in the studio – so they're clearly working out of love and respect, and not just a quickie remix paycheck. Titles include "A Helluva Town (Sa Ra Go rmx)" by George Russell, "Mizrab (Prefuse 73 remix)" by Gabor Szabo, "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac (Gerardo Frisina rmx)" by Dizzy Gillespie, "At Night (Ravi Coltrane w/Julie Patton)" by John Coltrane, "Stolen Moments (Teflon Tel-Aviv rmx)" by Oliver Nelson, "Bamboo Flute Blues (Kid Koala rmx)" by Yusef Lateef, "Astral Traveling (Boozoo Bajou rmx)" by Pharoah Sanders, and "Attica Blues (Chief Xcel rmx)". Impulse, 1960s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's few people we'd trust more with our ears than Gilles Peterson – and once again, the man shows that our trust in him wasn't misplaced! This time round, Gilles takes us on a heady trip through the hippest side of the Impulse Records label – the imprint that's quite well known for its groundbreaking jazz of the 60s and 70s, but which is presented here with a special flair that's really amazing! As usual, Peterson goes way past the obvious hits and classics, and digs even deeper into the many great albums issued by Impulse – all to find special tunes and wonderful tracks that might have slipped past us otherwise – put together with even greater care to assure a even-keeled mood throughout the entire set. Gilles has a way of re-igniting the fire that first made these records great – by setting the tunes up in an order, and with a pacing, that allows each number to resonate even more strongly alongside its partners in the tracklist. Only 10 tracks in all – but all of them are great – and titles include "First Gymnopedie" by Yusef Lateef, "The Blessing Song" by Michael White, "Enchanted Lady" by Milt Jackson & Ray Brown, "Alamode" by Art Blakey, "Lonesome Lover" by Max Roach, "See You Later" by Dave MacKay & Vicki Hamilton, "Patterns" by Oliver Nelson, "Wise One" by John Coltrane, and "Three Flowers" by McCoy Tyner. Tight later work from Jo Jones – a set that's got all the swinging energy of the early years, but also a relaxed vibe that's mighty nice too! There's a good quality to the recording – as it's one of those killer 70s sessions done for Denon in Japan – and Jones is clearly in respectful company, working with Jimmy Oliver on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, and Major Holley on bass – the last two of whom really match Jo's energy nicely! There's nothing fancy here, but it's got a nice feel throughout – and titles are mostly familiar standards like "Take The A Train", "My Last Affair", "Stompin At The Savoy", "Solitude", and "It Don't Mean A Thing". Charlie Parker, Mid 60s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A second great set from a group that's even greater than the sum of its parts – a formation that seems to breathe new life into the talents of the four legendary musicians who make up its core! Not that these players were ever flagging at all – but there's really something special going on here in the interplay between the alto of Oliver Lake, cornet of Graham Haynes, bass of Joe Fonda, and drums of Barry Altschul – great musicians in their own right, but really coming together with a unified sound here that's amazing! The leadoff cut on the record is a dedication to Ornette Coleman – and while there's a lot more going on here than just a Coleman inspiration, the mixture of individuality and unity is also something that Ornette would have really been proud of – handled here with a sense of urgency that's especially striking in the work of Lake and Haynes. Oliver Lake works here with guitarist Kevin Eubanks – a player who's mainstream moments might not seem like a match for Lake's more avant leanings – but a surprisingly great combination in the space of this mid 80s set for the Black Saint label! Eubanks has a way of matching Lake's angular reed lines that really comes off well – underscoring an edge in his playing we don't always here, and making for a slightly warmed sound on the alto and soprano sax moments. As on other Lake albums from the time, the drumming of Pheeroan Aklaff is really a treat – and other players here include Geri Allen on piano and Fred Hopkins on bass. Really great work from the Oliver Lake Organ Quartet – a group that features the excellent Jared Gold on the Hammond – one of our favorite jazz organists in recent years! Gold's got this way of blocking sound and shapes that almost reminds us of Larry Young – but with a twist that's definitely Larry's own – and his free-thinking approach to the instrument is really a great fit for Lake's work on alto and flute – especially since he's not really the kind of jazz musician to go for a traditional sax and organ session! Instead, the reeds and Hammond come together in these really great waves of sound – augmented by trumpet from Freddie Hendrix, and given some structure by the drums of Chris Beck. Titles include "Lucky One", "Root", "Palma", "Cyan", "What I Heard", and "6&3". CD

A quartet with a name that you might not have heard before, but which stands for the first initials of the four great members of the group – Oliver Lake on alto and soprano sax, Graham Haynes on cornet, Joe Fonda on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums, percussion, and mbira! There's a long-burning spirit to the record that really takes us back to some of Lake's greatest moments from decades past – and which really seems to elevate Haynes more than usual too – and Fonda is superb in the setting, often working with full, thoughtful lines on his bass that are especially illuminating. Altschul is incredibly sharp and focused – almost working in a mode that's more Ed Blackwell than some of his other work – and the whole thing is superb, an instant classic from a group we hope to hear more from. Rita Reys meets Oliver Nelson – and a host of other great jazz talents, including Lee Konitz, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, and Klaus Doldinger! The tracks on the set are all standards, but they're done in the tightly swinging style of Nelson's best backing work for vocalists at the time – complete with those warm tones and colors that always made his work some of our favorite in this mode. The mode is a bit different for Reys, who we normally know from more fragile settings – but it works especially well here, and almost seems to compensate for a faltering quality in her vocals at the time. A fantastic transformation of the Oliver Nelson sound of the 60s – a large ensemble record that takes all the soul of his earlier groove, and reworks it with a more electric vibe for the 70s! Nelson's at the height of his powers here – working brilliantly as a leader and arranger, to open the door for strong sounds from younger players like Mike Wofford and Lonnie Liston Smith on keyboards, and the great Dennis Budimir on guitar! The record's unlike most of what you'll hear on Nelson's other albums – even his other Flying Dutchman work of the time – as it's got loads of wonderful keyboard moments, and even some moog and Arp as well. JJ JohnsonComplete 60s Big Band Recordings (Dynamic Sound Of/Goodies/Broadway Express/Total JJ Johnson) ... CD
RCA/Phono (Spain), Mid 1960s. Used 2CD ... $19.99
Beautiful work from the mid 60s big band of JJ Johnson – a very hip ensemble, heard here on 4 full albums from the time! First up is the RCA set known as JJ – a beautiful example of the mid-60s power of JJ Johnson – a big band session that features arrangements by JJ, Gary McFarland, and Oliver Nelson – all a very cooking mix of modernism, soul, and swing! The groups are large on all numbers, but there's plenty of room for Johnson to solo out in the lead – in a tightly-blown approach to trombone that almost comes across like a trumpet, given JJ's focus on the instrument. Other horn parts back him up lightly, but never overwhelm – and titles include "So What", "Stratusphunk", "Winter's Waif", "El Camino Real", "Stolen Moments", "Train Samba", and "Bemsha Swing". Next is another RCA date – Goodies, one of the lesser-known JJ Johnson albums of the mid 60s – and nice little session that's done with a fresh sort of style! The album's got JJ playing mostly with larger arrangements – penned by Dick Hyman, Slide Hampton, and Billy Byaers – in modes that range from upbeat, mod, and swinging – to mellow, lush, and soulful. A few cuts have vocalists – like the lovely Marlene Ver Planck, who sings wordlessly on the album's amazing groover "Pense A Moi" – a sweetly skipping jazz waltz that's almost worth the price of the record alone! Marlene returns on a great version of "Agua De Beber", and Osie Johnson sings on versions of "The Seventh Son" and "In The Name Of Love" – and other nice tracks include "008", "Feeling Good", and "G'Won Train". On CD 2, JJ takes a trip on the Broadway Express – serving up a host of great tunes pulled from shows, arranged with a very groovy flair by Mundell Lowe! Lowe makes the album sparkle with a bit more interest than the average session of this nature – adding in percussion, guitar, and other strong instrumental touches to support JJ's trombone solos. Titles include "The Joker", "Sunrise Sunset", "Goodbye Old Girl", "I Believe In You", "More Than One Way", "Night Song", and "Why Did I Choose You?". Last up is Total JJ Johnson – a further chapter in the big band years of JJ – heard here at a point when he was pushing his ensemble even more than before, with a fluid groove that almost matches the energy of similar groups on MPS at the time! There's a real undercurrent of hipness going on in the record – a quality that's not content to ape bigger band modes of earlier years, and instead finds a whole new space in sound – a relatively lean quality, but one that still uses the added players to create some magnificent qualities in sound – all to support the well-blown lead solo work by Johnson. There's a nice groove on most numbers, and the album features some especially nice reeds from Jerome Richardson and Frank Wess. Johnson handled arrangements, and titles include "Short Cake", "Space Walk", "Little Dave", and "Euro #1". CD

The group display a masterful balance between united energy and individual expression – and the synchronicity between Lacy and Potts is especially striking.
