King CurtisTrouble In Mind/It's Party Time ... CD
Tru Sound/Ace (UK), 1961/1962. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Think King Curtis only recorded great albums for Atlantic Records? Guess again – because this CD features 2 early gems for Prestige! Trouble In Mind is an unusual early one for King – a special album in that it features him singing and playing guitar, in addition to his usual work on alto sax! The session was cut early in his career, before he'd forged the trademark approach that kind of locked him in in later years – and it's a bit of a blues effort, a bit of a jazz effort, with backing by a combo that includes Al Casey on guitar, Paul Griffin on piano, and a backing group of female singers on a few cuts. Titles include "Jivin Time", "But That's Alright", "Deep Fry", "Don't Deceive Me", "Woke Up This Morning", and "Bad Bad Whiskey". Party Time is hard-wailing early work from King Curtis – one of his few full-out stormers from the time! The set was done for the Tru-Sound subsidiary of Prestige Records – and like the few other albums on the imprint, it's got a heavy-duty sound that's a big departure from the other titles on Prestige – much more R&B influenced, with King blowing heavily on tenor, in a really lively feel. Tracks are short and firey, and titles include "Free For All", "Easy Like", "Hot Saxes", "The Party Time Twist", "Low Down", and "Keep Movin". CD

✨✧ King CurtisKing Curtis Live At Fillmore West ... LP
Atco, 1971. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The King Curtis combo in all of its glory – really grooving hard here in a set of instrumental performances recorded at the same time as Aretha Franklin's famous live date at the Fillmore West! King backed Aretha up on her own record from Fillmore, but this set features all the instrumental grooves laid down by Curtis and his group before Aretha took the stage – very tight and funky numbers that showcase King's work on alto and soprano sax, as well as organ from Billy Preston, guitar from Cornell Dupree, electric piano from Truman Thomas, and funky drums from Bernard Pretty Purdie! The Memphis Horns get into the action a bit – blasting out when the tunes require it – and as with the Franklin album, the recording style here is totally great – very "live", but still with the best focus of Atlantic studio soul! Titles include a smoking 7 minute version of King's funky classic "Memphis Soul Stew", plus long takes on "Changes", "I Stand Accused", and "Soul Serenade" – as well as shorter versions of "A Whole Lotta Love" and "Ode To Billy Joe"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ King CurtisSoul Twist ... LP
Enjoy, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Raw early work from King Curtis – an album of searing sax instrumentals, recorded for the smaller Enjoy label in the years before King's more famous association with Atlantic! The sound here is equal parts R&B and instrumental soul – hardly the throwaway pop you might guess from the "twist" in the title, and instead a key transitional album in shaping the sound of the sax in soul during the 60s – blown to perfection, but never as over the top as some of the honkers and shouters of 50s sax sessions. Tracks are a good mix of King-penned originals and soulful covers – with highlights that include "Soul Twist", "I Know", "Sack O Woe", "Wobble Twist", "Twisting With the King", and "Big Dipper". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s Collectables Golden Classics pressing. NOTE – Cover is lightly stained and wavy at the bottom head.)

Prestige/OJC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
The "new scene" of King Curtis here is a jazz one – as Prestige takes him into the studio, and backs up his tenor with accompaniment from Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Oliver Jackson – plus trumpet from Nat Adderley, billed on the back as "Little Brother" for contractual reasons! The tracks are long and open, with less of King's tenor tricks, and more of a laidback Gene Ammons-ish style of blowing. ✨✧ King CurtisSoul Meeting ... LP
Prestige, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Rare early King Curtis jazz session – cut in the years before he settled down to his tight short soul instrumental recordings for Atlantic. The record is very much in the Prestige soul jazz style of the early 60s – and King's set up nicely in a group that features Nat Adderley, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Belton Evans. In a way, Curtis' sax can't really hold it together for these longer tracks as well as he can on shorter soul instrumentals – but the record's got a good rhythm section, and it holds together well enough as an easy grooving session. Titles include "Soul Meeting", "Lazy Soul", "All The Way", and "Do You Have Soul Now?" LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
This is the kind of battle we like to see! Three heavy tenors – Nelson, King, and Jimmy Forrest – come head to head in a relaxed set of tunes cut in that Prestige blowing session mode, but tweaked with a bit more tightness, in the style of some of the label's emerging soul jazz sides of the 60s. Nelson's gutsy tenor will shock you if you haven't heard him in this sort of less restrained setting – and Forrest's work from this time is always a treat. Titles include "Blues For MF", "Anacruses", "Perdido", and "In Passing". Includes the bonus track "Soul Street". CD

Scepter/Sundazed, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
And give a party they do – a really rocking, raw soul party that goes way past any teeny-bopper sort of associations with the "twist" – into a realm that may well make the album The Shirelles greatest record ever! Both King Curtis and The Shirelles trade tracks back and forth – in a style that will definitely have you forget the twist in the title, because the overall feel is mostly R&B and raw soul – served up with a mighty nice groove! The Shirelles hit some great harmonies in an uptempo mode – way past simple chart pop, and nicely soulful throughout – and King Curtis plays tenor and sings a bit, and turns in some nice tracks that rank with his early 60s work for the Fire/Fury label! Titles include "Mister Twister", "New Orleans", "Welcome Home Baby", "Potato Chips", "Mama Here Comes The Bride", "Take The Last Train Home", and "Love Is A Swinging Thing". CD

Two killer early funky cuts from Fatback Band! "Dance Girl" is an incredible skittish groover – recorded with snapping drums, strumming guitar, and this shouted vocal that hangs the whole thing together. (And oddly, this version seems to have a second voice dubbed in, making some comments underneath the whole thing!) "Keep On Brother" has a massive drum break at the start – and the young Johnny King sings with this raw, raspy style that really fits the groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Babe RuthDarker Than Blue – The Harvest Years 1972 to 1975 (First Base/Amar Caballero/Babe Ruth/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Harvest/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $18.99 39.99
A trio of great albums from Babe Ruth – plus bonus tracks too! First up is First Base – the debut of a group so great and so groovy, they ended up having a huge influence on the early sound of hip hop – thanks to a wonderfully funky sound at the core of their progressive rock groove! Babe Ruth have this rhythmic impulse that's really amazing – a way of working bass, drums, and percussion together with qualities that go way past just prog rock noodling – and have this focus that really fits the lead vocals and guitar of Alan Shacklock, who also handled all the arrangements for this mighty debut too! Titles include their classic cut "The Mexican" – a famous sample cut from way back, with nice use of acoustic guitar and a Morricone riff too – plus versions of Zappa's "King Kong" and Jesse Winchester's "Black Dog" – and the originals "Wells Fargo", "The Runaways", and "Joker". Next is Amar Caballero, an album with a horse on the cover, and a sound that's maybe even more soulful than the first mighty outing by Babe Ruth – quite a lot, given the strength of that debut! Female singer Jenny Haan seems to have an even greater presence here – working some nice currents of color through the group's great ability to riff, groove, and sometimes step into more acoustic modes – all while holding onto one of the hippest currents going in the Harvest Records scene – and one of the most unique as well! There's plenty of surprises throughout – and in addition to great cuts like "Broken Cloud", "Gimme Some Leg", "We Are Holding On", "Amar Caballo", and "Doctor Love" – the group also turn in a nicely offbeat remake of "Cool Jerk" too! Last up is the self-titled Babe Ruth, a set that really stands as a testament to their many musical influences! There's few groups who could ever hope to wrap together influences from Stax Records, Ennio Morricone, and Curtis Mayfield – and whole the whole thing could ever turn out well – but the mighty Babe Ruth do exactly that, and still find time for some of their own unique grooves as well! The group are every bit as groovy here as on their previous records – mixing fuzzy guitars, well-crafted rhythms, and a nicely compressed version of prog into an amazingly fresh sound that still delights all these many years later – thanks to well-crafted vocals from Jenny Haan, and sharp arrangements from Alan Shacklock, whose guitars and sense of wit really keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Shacklock penned most of the original tunes here – like "Dancer", "Somebody's Nobody", "Jack O'Lantern", and "The Dutchess Of Orleans" – and the group also turn in nice remakes of "Fistful Of Dollars", "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue", and "Private Number". 3CD set features bonus tracks – "Wells Fargo (single)", "Theme From A Few Dollars More", "Ain't That Livin", "If Heaven's On Beauty's Side", and "Private Number (single)" – plus a big booklet of notes. A fantastic live set from reedman Gary Bartz – captured here with his ultra-hip NTU group – who you might know from their classic albums on Milestone in the 70s! Gary's soaring out with a hell of a lot of pride and power right from the start – effortlessly spinning these long lines on soprano sax and alto, and bringing a bit of his voice into the mix too – working with a very sharp group that features Charles Mimms on both electric and acoustic piano, Curtis Robertson on bass, and Howard King on drums – players who follow Gary's lead wonderfully, and stretch out on some very long tracks that are even different than the spirit of the double-length live album that Bartz recorded around the same time. Brook BentonHome Style/Story Teller (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1970/1971. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A pair of later gems from Brook Benton – back to back on a single CD – and with a bonus track too! First up is Home Style – wonderful work from Brook Benton – and the kind of record that always gets overlooked in discussions of southern soul, but which is proof that Benton's always been a key force in the genre! Brook virtually invented the style with his earlier country soul recordings – and by the time of this 1970 set, he's in perfect form vocally – and working under some wonderfully sophisticated arrangements by Arif Mardin. The result is the kind of cross-genre record that Brook could do effortlessly – and which should have made him huge, but instead kind of got him left behind by all the other folks who were copping his style. Yet with the strength of a record like this, we'll take that overlooked fame as still OK – because the set's a gem just waiting to be discovered by later generations like us! Rhythm's by the Dixie Flyers – augmented by jazz players that include King Curtis, Pepper Adams, and Joe Newman. Titles include "Aspen Colorado", "For Lee Ann", "Whoever Finds This, I Love You", "Don't It Make You Wanta Go Home", and "Let Me Fix It". Next Is Story Teller – Ccol Cotillion work from Brook Benton – southern soul mixed with smoother, sophisticated moments – and a perfect realization of the sound that Benton was going for in the 60s! There's a bit less country here than before – although Brook also still has one foot in his roots, too – and the overall approach has mellower soul touches that are great – keyboards, guitar, and electric bass that roll along gently next to Benton's wonderful vocals. The album was recorded at Criteria Studios, and up north in New York – and titles include "Movin Day", "Sidewalks Of Chicago", "She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye", "Poor Make Believer", and "Shoes". CD also features the bonus track "A Black Child Can't Smile". CD

Ode, 1971. Very Good+ ... $49.99
Righteous and rocking soul from Merry Clayton – a record that really helped put the singer on the map during the 70s! Merry had roots in a few different strands of music, and was always a bit different than some of her straighter soul contemporaries – a quality that really comes through here in the album's great arrangements from heavyweights Jerry Peters, Carole King, and Billy Preston – each of whom bring some slightly different flavors to Clayton's vocals! The Crusaders and jazz legend Curtis Amy provide instrumental support – with a nicely varied vibe that has occasional rock currents mixed in with deeper soul. Some of our favorite tracks include a hip Leon Ware tune called "Whatever", a nice cover of Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands", and Jerry Peters "Love Me Or Let Me Be Lonely" – and other titles include "Southern Man", "Same Old Story", "Walk On In", and "A Song For You". John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really cooking at full strength! The groove here is a bit harder, heavier, and hardbop-inflected than some of Trane's late 50s sides with Red Garland – thanks to a lineup that features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's a crisp modern edge to the record that really holds up beautifully – even after years of play – and titles include "Blue Train, "Locomotion", "Moment's Notice", and "Lazy Bird". One of a number of excellent blues sessions cut by the mostly-jazz label Prestige Records in the early 60s – yet one that also has some nice jazzy elements in the mix too, thanks to the presence of King Curtis on tenor sax and John Wright on piano – both solo stars who were recording their own albums as leaders for the label at the time! The focus is clearly on the guitar and wonderful vocals of Arbee Stidham – yet he performs here in a setting that's less rootsy than some of the other Prestige Bluesville sessions of the period – a mode that makes a nice link with the rising soul jazz underground of the period – a jazz mode that borrowed plenty from earlier generations of blues! Other players include Leonard Gaskin on bass and Armond Jackson drums – making for a full combo mode – and titles include "Pawn Shop", "You Can't Live In This World By Yourself", "People What Would You Do", "Teenage Kiss", "Wee Baby Blues", "I'm Tired Of Wandering", "You Keep Me Yearning", and "Last Goodbye Blues". Unabashed diva work from Linda Clifford – and a record that brings together the best midtempo soul of her earlier Curtom work, with the stronger, fuller disco groove that she was hitting as her career progressed! The album features some production work by Norman Harris and Curtis Mayfield – both of whom seem to bring out the best in Linda, especially Harris – who could work magic by adding a strong Harris Machine groove to just about any singer. Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett certainly have some heavy friends here – a stunning host of guest help on the record, who make the whole thing come together with a sweet blend of southern rock and soul! The duo were always almost more of a soul act than a rock one, and that quality really shows through here – as they tear it up with help from The Memphis Horns, plus Duane Allman on slide guitar, Bobby Whitlock on organ, Charlie Freeman on guitar, and even a bit of guest help from King Curtis on tenor and Little Richard on piano! Tunes include some great originals that show why the Bramlett's were the premier roots rock act of the time – mixed with a few nicely-chosen cuts by other folks – in a lineup that includes "Lay Down My Burden", "God Knows I Love You", "Hard Luck & Troubles", "Soul Shake", "Miss Ann", "Living On The Open Road", "Free The People", "The Love Of My Man", and "Living On The Open Road". ✨✧ Aretha FranklinAretha Now/Lady Soul (Original Master Recording gold CD) ... CD
Atlantic/Mobile Fidelity, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 albums on one CD – and a gold CD at that! Aretha Now is one of a handful of crucial early Aretha Franklin albums for Atlantic – and a key example of her genius pairing with arranger Arif Mardin! Instrumental backing is by a hard burning Memphis/Muscle Shoals lineup that includes Spooner Oldham on electric piano and organ, Tommy Cogbill on guitar, Andrew Love and Charles Chalmers on tenor, Wayne Jackson on trumpet, and Roger Hawkins on drums – and even Aretha herself gets to play a bit of piano on the set. But the really amazing thing here is the way that this core live mode of backing is also given some airier, loftier overtones by Mardin and co-arranger Tom Dowd – in a way that lifts up the tunes a bit more, and pushes them away from straight indie southern soul – into the range of greatness that made Franklin stand apart from most of her contemporaries. A key example of this is the album's seminal reading of "I Say A Little Prayer" – but all cuts are great, and other tunes include "Think", "A Change", "You're A Sweet Sweet Man", "I Take What I Want", "See Saw", "Hello Sunshine", and "You Send Me". Lady Soul is one of Aretha's undisputed classics – a seminal session that furthered her deep soul agenda with key backings from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd! The Sweet Inspirations provide sublime backing vocals behind Franklin's maturing delivery of the lyrics – and the music is by an all-star group of players that includes Spooner Oldham, Bobby Womack, Jimmy Johnson, King Curtis, Tommy Cogbill, Roger Hawkins, and even Eric Clapton! Cuts include "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Money Won't Change You", "Come Back Baby", and "Ain't No Way". CD

Atlantic, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A completely cooking little live set from Aretha Franklin – and a crowning moment not just in her career, but for Atlantic Records soul in general! Aretha's working here before a very enthusiastic crossover crowd at the Fillmore West in San Francisco – getting tight backing from the combo of King Curtis (Memphis Horns, Billy Preston, and Pretty Purdie in tow!) – and hitting a groove that's often rawer, grittier, and more deep-soul tuned than some of her studio sides from the time! The recording quality is totally great – and goes out of its way to preserve the presence of the audience, and showcase Aretha's own interaction and strong sense of personality. Ray Charles makes a surprising guest appearance on one track, but the whole show is really Franklin's own – a majestic little live date that features the tunes "Spirit In The Dark", "Respect", "Make It With You", "Don't Play That Song", "Dr Feelgood", and "Love The One You're With". Sublimely soulful work from Larry Willis – just the kind of record to beautifully demonstrate the strong power of his later years! Although Willis is probably best remembered for his funky sides of the 70s, by the time of this early 90s date, he'd matured into a much deeper feeling player – a pianist with a sense of rhythm and color that almost matches McCoy Tyner, and a great leader for a larger group – as you'll hear here on a sextet outing with Curtis Fuller on trombone, Tom Williams on trumpet, and John Stubblefield on tenor and soprano sax. The horns really add a lot to the album – some sharper edges alongside the warmly rhythmic modes of Larry's piano – and rhythm is by Ben Riley on drums and David Williams on bass. An amazing look at the world of New York music in the late 50s and early 60s – and a set that's got a much more urban vibe than you might guess from the cover! The vibe here is partly hinted at by the Broadway address in the title – as most of these tracks come from a time and stretch when the indie pop machine was going full steam in the US – strongly urged on by the success of 50s R&B and early rock hits – served up here in a stunning mix of really unusual, really groovy singles – most of which go way way beyond the too-reissued Brill Building music of the time! Instead, the bulk of this work comes from the President label – and other imprints like Joy, Seville, and others – all brought together with a huge booklet of notes that follows the 107 titles in the box on a track-by-track basis – all with the completeness of an Ace/Kent compilation. A brilliant assemblage of players – working here under the Timeless All Stars tag, because they'd all recorded for the label – but held together much more deeply through a rich tradition of west coast soul jazz! The team of Harold Land and Bobby Hutcherson are wonderfully united for the session – working with Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all to carve out longer tracks that sparkle with the best open feeling of the sound that Land and Hutcherson first put down together at the end of the 60s. There's a sense of warmth and good spirit to the recording – but not of the type that dampens the energies of the players – as the best tracks on the record have a searing, searching feel that's pretty darn surprising for such an all-star session! Kent/Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 22.99
Curtis Mayfield is a hell of a singer – as most folks know from his work in the Impressions, and his later solo classics of the 70s – and he's also a hell of a songwriter too, one who was very generous with his magical material, right from the start! Back in the 60s, Curtis was sharing his songs with other up-and-coming soul singers on the Chicago scene – some of whom he was also producing in the studio, as well – and as the decade moved into the 70s, others were soon picking up Mayfield's tunes – both for their ability to deliver a personal message, and for the larger political agenda that was always in the music too! This really well-done collection brings together two dozen of Curtis' best songs, handled by other folks – mostly from the 60s and early 70s, but with a few surprises from later years too – all supported with a really great collection of notes and other information too. Titles include "Man's Temptation" by the Jackson 5, "Behind The Curtains" by Jan Bradley, "Rainbow (alt)" by Gene Chandler, "Monkey Time" by The Miracles, "I'm So Proud" by Main Ingredient, "Give Me Your Love" by Barbara Mason, "That's What Love Will Do" by The Gaylads, "Never Stop Loving Me" by Keni Burke, "I've Been Trying" by Jerry Butler, "Queen Majesty" by The Techniques, "It's All Over" by Walter Jackson, "Mama Didn't Lie" by The Orlons, "He Will Break Your Heart" by Freddie Scott, "People Get Ready" by Dionne Warwick, "Need To Belong" by Isaac Hayes, "Make Me Believe In You" by Patti Jo, "Let's Do It Again (single edit)" by The Staple Singers, "Look Into Your Heart (single edit)" by Aretha Franklin, and "The Makings Of You" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. Curtom, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the last great 70s soundtracks on Curtom Records – a smoking little set that pairs the music of Curtis Mayfield with the vocals of Mavis Staples! Curtis is very much in charge of the record from the start, and works in a hard-stepping and righteous mode that recalls his earlier work on the Staples' soundtrack for Let's Do It Again – no surprise, given that Piece Of The Action was the next installment in the successful series of films that starred Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier! The sound here is nicely full, hitting that rich mid 70s Curtom mode that sounded so great on Leroy Hutson and Natural Four albums of the time – a slightly more sophisticated approach that mixed in a bit of strings with the heavier funk at the bottom. Titles include "Chocolate City", written by Curtis with Keni Burke and Henry Gibson, plus "Getting Deeper", "A Piece Of The Action", "Orientation", and "Of Whom Shall I Be Afraid". Curtis Mayfield's still very firmly on track with this set – recording in his new hometown of Atlanta, but also working with Chicago talents like Rich Tufo and Morris Jennings – all in a warm mellow groove that's totally great! The style's a bit more contemporary than the Curtom years, but never too much so – and there's more than enough warmth in the instrumentation to match Mayfield's still-great vocals on the lyrics. The tunes are decidedly less political – more about love and romance – but that's ok with us, because they're the sort of themes that Curtis first started with back in the early years of his career. Boardwalk/Sequel (UK), 1981/1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
Curtis Mayfield's early 80s albums for the Boardwalk label – back to back on one CD! Love Is The Place is great post-Curtom work from Curtis – a set recorded in LA, not Chicago – with the mighty Gene Page at the helm! The style here isn't that different from the later Curtom years – more in the side of love and life than some of the more righteous themes of Curtis' earlier solo records – and Page proves to be a surprisingly good choice for the album, as he really hits the right sort of groove to keep Mayfield on track. There's a few faster tunes here, but most of the work is in a mellow or midtempo mode – just the right pace for Curtis' maturing vocals. Titles include "Come Free Your People", "Love Is The Place", "Babydoll", "She Don't Let Nobody", "Just Ease My Mind", and "You Mean Everything To Me". On Honesty, Curtis is recording in his new hometown of Atlanta, but also working with Chicago talents like Rich Tufo and Morris Jennings – all in a warm mellow groove that's totally great! Titles include "Summer Hot", "Still Within Your Heart", "Hey Baby", "Nobody But You", and "If You Need Me". CD

Curtom, 1980. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff – and one of Curtis' last great songs! "Tripping Out" has a stepping midtempo approach – one that features snapping beats at the bottom, sweetened strings over the top, and a really solid Curtom production job – all slowly grooving and snaking around, while Curtis sings over the top in a sweetly breaking vocal! Massive – and a real treasure! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Contemporary/Craft, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An album with a sexy cover, but a set that's one of the more soulful from the LA scene of the 50s – thanks to a tight, sharp group working under the leadership of bassist Curtis Counce! Counce didn't cut many albums as a leader, but all of them are pretty darn great – and done with a bit more edge than the cool jazz of the LA scene – a bit more open, with a strong focus on the solos on some of the album's longer tracks too! Solos include great work on tenor by Harold Land – who's really coming into his own here – plus Jack Sheldon on trumpet, and Carl Perkins on piano – a player who would pass away not long after this set. Frank Butler completes the group on drums – and titles include "Complete", "Big Foot", "Counceltation", and "Mean To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousPeople Get Ready – The Curtis Mayfield Songbook ... CD
Kent/Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stunning soul from the great Joe Bataan – a really groundbreaking mix of modes that's right up there with the best of the Spanish Harlem scene of the late 60s! The album is Joe Bataan's debut for the Fania Records label – and the start of an incendiary run of Latin classics that forever changed the face of the New York scene – a mindblowing mix of Latin rhythms and soul-based inspiration, served up in a mix of English and Spanish language lyrics! The title track is a sublime cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Gypsy Woman" – one that's even more heartbreaking than the original – and other titles include "Ordinary Guy", Sugar Guaguanco", "So Fine", "Fuego", and the groovy "Chickie's Trombone" – a tight little jammer that shows that Joe's group also drew plenty of inspiration from the descarga scene too. The set's all standards, and Kenny's style is nicely raspy – not the best technically, but with some surprisingly gentle feeling that's a nice complement to his work on trumpet. Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest Blue Note albums of all time – a record that's even better than the look of it's cover – which is already pretty darn classic! Hank Mobley had been making records for Blue Note for a number of years before this set – but Caddy For Daddy is one in which he really takes off – mixing earlier hardbop modes with a more complex approach to both rhythm and lyricism – matched with some wonderful work from Lee Morgan in the frontline, who was also really hitting new heights at the time – in a group that also includes Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The group plays this amazing mix of soul jazz and modal grooves that sets a whole new standard in the Blue Note catalog – and every cut is a winner, with titles that include "Venus Di Mildew", "The Morning After", "3rd Time Around", and "Ace Deuce Trey". A masterpiece in psychedelic soul from The Temptations – perhaps the most perfectly realized album from their years working with Norman Whitfield! The set's awash in that bottom-heavy, rumbling funk mode that Whitfield brought to the group at the end of the 60s – served up in bold tracks that push the group's vocals to a whole new level, and which bring in a more righteous sound than anyone might have expected previously from Motown! The centerpiece here is the amazing "Runaway Child" – a really extended number that has all the political soul of a Curtis Mayfield tune – and other titles include "Cloud Nine", "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me", "Love Is A Hurtin Thing", "I Gotta Find A Way", "I Need Your Lovin", and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". An incredible album from one of the greatest talents on the Chicago soul scene of the late 60s – guitarist Phil Upchurch, a player with an amazing sound! Phil could work in worlds that were equal parts soul and psychedelia – making his guitar a perfect accompaniment for the best Chicago soul of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Minnie Riperton, and other greats of the time. This album's easily one of Phil's best – a mindblowing set of arrangements put together by the groundbreaking producer Charles Stepney – bringing together bits of jazz, rock, soul, and funk – all providing the perfect genre-blending space for Upchurch to solo! Given that there's no singer on the set, Phil's work on guitar is a lot freer than you're used to hearing – in a really great way, one that puts him in a space somewhere between Shuggie Otis and Jimi Hendrix! Strawberry (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... $29.99 34.99
The darker side of the scene in the late 60s/early 70s – music from a time when rock was willing to take on themes of the supernatural and satanic – sometimes in ways that were fully-formed, sometimes with a slightly more subtle approach that somehow made things sound even more eerie overall! This well-done box documents a time when witchcraft, magic, and satanic themes were taking over mainstream minds on both sides of the Atlantic – a late 60s moment when films, comics, TV shows, and paperbacks were brimming over with stories and ideas from the dark side – a moment that also touched music as well, as you'll learn in the copious notes that come with the package! The mix of tracks is great, as there's a lot here that we never would have thought to place in such a category – and throughout the 55 titles in the package, you'll experience plenty of weirdness – in a lineup that includes work from Paul's Troubles, Curved Air, Jacula, Warhorse, Elias Hulk, Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, Comus, Dr Z, Van Der Graaf Generator, Sam Gopal, Complex, Curtis Knight Zeus, Onyx, Shape Of Rain, Jason Crest, The Laurels, Tear Gas, and many others. A wealth of wonderful work from the key years of the British Invasion – including a fair bit of groups who never really crossed the Atlantic to invade our shores at the time! Liverpool is best known as the home of The Beatles, but during the early 60s, the city was host to a huge wave of creative activity – as were nearby cities in the north of England – and as you'll hear in this set, there was no end to the range of groups making killer records over the space of number of years! Some of the work here will ring your ears with familiar tones from UK 60s rock, yet in ways that are different than the mod styles down in London, there's plenty of overlooked gems here to discover – and given that the box set goes well into the second half of the 60s, there's plenty of tracks here that are way different than just the work that grew up in the shadows of the fab four! The package has that fantastic presentation we love from the Grapefruit/Strawberry label – really well-chosen cuts, supported by very detailed notes – a massive 93 tracks in all, with work from The Perishers, Quotations, Satin Bells, Cilla Black, Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas, Wimple Witch, Selftons, 23rd Turnoff, Tony Jackson & The Vibrations, The Mojos, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Wailing Howie Casey & The Seniors, Lee Curtis & The All-Stars, The Big Three, The Kinsleys, Wellington Wade, and dozens of others! Timeless (Holland), 1978/1979/1980. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Live At The Muzeval is a great comeback set from Lionel Hampton – one of those overseas sessions that really has him reworking his sound for a more mature jazz generation! All the energy of the earlier Hamp recordings is here – but the sound maybe also leans a bit more on the evolved larger ensemble style of the MPS big band generation – a great mode under the dynamic leadership and vibes of Hampton! Other players include Wild Bill Davis on organ and piano, Joe Newman and Victor Paz on trumpet, Paul Moen on tenor, Eddie Chamblee on alto and tenor, Billy Mackel on guitar, Barry Smith on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums – and titles include "Giant Steps", "No Me Esqueca", "Moments Notice", and "Rodney Round Robin". On Hamp In Haarlem Hampton is leading a lively large ensemble that takes us back to some of his best recordings on his own Glad-Hamp label! Like those, this set's an evolution of the earlier swing sound that first made Hampton great – a groove that's infused with more bop-era touches on some of the solos, and also the funkier advances made in big band material at the start of the 70s – which creates some nicely contemporary sounds in the rhythms. The group features solos from Hamp on vibes – plus a bit of vocals as well – and other soloists include Joe Newman on trumpet, Paul Moen on tenor, Steve Slagle on alto, Paul Jeffrey on baritone, and Curtis Fuller on trombone. Titles include "Greasy Greens", "Mr PC", "Hamp's Got The Blues", "Salsa", and "Glad Hamp". Outrageous is later work from legendary jazz vibist Lionel Hampton – and a set that has him returning to the energy of the large group ensemble that first brought him fame in the 40s! Yet the style isn't 40s at all – and instead shows an evolved take on big band modes – similar to the great shift in the European scene of the 70s, as Hamp brings in a bit of electricity on the piano, organ, and guitar – mixing with a larger section of horns that have a surprisingly strong, screaming style – often over rhythms that are heavy in touches from funk and soul! Hamp gets to solo on the record, but the approach is often more focused on the overall sound too – in a lineup that includes Herman Riley and Paul Moen on saxes, Wild Bill Davis on organ, Walt Johnson and Oscar Brashear on trumpets, and George Bohannon, Tom McIntosh, Curtis Fuller, and Jimmy Cleveland on trombones! Tracks are nice and long, and full of colorful changes – on titles that include "Hamp & Dex", "Dr Lambchop", "Ko Ko", "Wail For The Cat", and "Tap Step". CD

Fantastic! This is the kind of soul that we still collect vinyl for! Freddie Hughes is one of the great lost voices of the 60s, and this sparkling album of soulful tunes is a real gem! He's not the same singer as the Freddie Hughes from Chicago – and he hailed from San Francisco, a very unlikely source for such great soul music. The session was recorded with Lonnie Hewitt (Cal Tjader's funky piano player) in SF – but it's got that perfect New York Wand/Scepter "deep soul meets uptown" sound. The tracks are mostly written by Hughes or Hewitt – and they are all pretty amazing, filled with hooks that just don't quit, and some heartbreaking verses that match the work of writers like Curtis Mayfield or Garland Green. Jazz Studio 3 is a tight set of chamber jazz tracks headed by John Graas – working here with a very strong set of players that includes Charlie Mariano, Jimmy Giuffre, Zoot Sims, Larry Bunker, Gerry Mulligan, Howard Roberts, and Conte Candoli – in groupings that include varying 5, 7, and 9 piece ensembles. Tracks have many of the clever west coast chamber jazz twists and turns – but the sharper-edged horn work of Sims and Mariano keep things moving along with a nice edge, and a surprisingly soulful solo feel – especially on the longer tunes. Titles include "Rogeresque", "6/4 & Even", "Mulliganesque", and "Jazz Sections From Symphony No 1 In F Minor". Jazz Studio 4 is a rare session as a leader by trumpeter Jack Millman – one that's based around his own compositions, and which a large group of west coast players alongside some lesser-known 50s talents! Players include Fred Aguirre, Lin Halliday, Artie Anto, Mike Pacheco, Curtis Counce, Herb Geller, Jimmy Giuffre, Howard Roberts, and Don Friedman – playing arrangements of Millman tunes by Shorty Rogers, Jimmy Giuffre, Jack Montrose, and Pete Rugolo. Tracks are short, but have wonderfully constructed horn passages – as well as some very nice use of Latin percussion – and titles include "Tom & Jerry", "Bolero De Mendez", "Groove Juice", "Pink Lady", "The Turk", and "Bambi". ✨✧ MaxaynMaxayn Reloaded – The Complete Recordings 1972 to 1974 (Maxayn/Mindful/Bail Out For Fun) (3CD set) ... CD
Capricorn/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The legendary music of Maxayn – finally given its due, and presented here in a great 3CD box, with all albums in tiny LP-styled sleeves! First up is Maxayn – the debut album from a funky female talent who deserves to be mentioned in the same territory as Betty Davis and Yvonne Fair! Like both of those artists, Maxayn isn't afraid to use an electric guitar when she wants – which puts her music somewhere in the territory of groups like The Bar-Kays and Black Nasty, and the way they could blend rock influences with funk and soul! No surprise, Maxayn's bandmates here include two members of Buddy Miles' group – who really help keep things deep – providing a massive foundation for the lady's incredible vocals. Titles include covers of the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Gimme Shelter" – plus the original tunes "Trying For Days", "Jam For Jack", "Song", and "Doing Nothing Nothing Doing". Next up is Mindful – a classic album of funky female soul – and part of the overlooked legacy of the mighty Maxayn Lewis! The set's a wicked blend of funk and rock, served up with help from Buddy Miles' bandmates Andrew Lewis on keyboards and bass, and Marlo Henderson on guitar – an instrument that's played in the same soul-drenched style you'd know from Buddy Miles' albums, which makes for a wonderful blend with the mindblowing vocals of Maxayn! The singer got her start working with Ike Turner – and definitely has the voice to match that legacy – and she's really set free here on material that was years ahead of its time, and which only today is finally getting its due. The album features lots of original tracks – including "Travelin", "The Answer", "Moan to the Music", "Stone Crazy", "Feelin'", and "Good Things" – plus a version of Curtis Mayfield's "Check Out Your Mind". Last up is Bail Out For Fun – a set that was the last in her initial run of the 70s, and maybe the grooviest of the bunch! The keyboards here are more center stage than the guitars of Maxayn's previous records – and they only seem to increase the funky feel of the record, especially as they're folded up with the vocals in this cool flanged-out production style – a mode that almost seems to echo Sly Stone, which might be no surprise – as the blend of funk, soul, and rock in the music definitely owes something to Sly! Yet Maxayn's very much her own woman – singing with full righteous energy on tunes that include some great originals, plus tracks by Buddy Miles and DJ Rogers too. Titles include the great moogy cut "Moonfunk", plus "Bail Out", "Fun", "You Don't Have To Be Lonely", "Trying For Days", and "Life is What You Make It". CD

✨✧ Jim RotondiFinesse ... CD
Cellar Live (Canada), 2024. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really beautiful setting for the trumpet of Jim Rotondi – a stunning large ensemble session that has his horn sparkling out strongly amidst a whole host of other wonderful musicians! The larger backings are arranged and led by Jakob Helling – who brings together a blend of trumpets, trombones, and reeds to create a wonderfully shimmering backdrop for the solos of Rotondi, and additional solos from Danny Grissett on piano, Dick Oatts on soprano sax, and Steve Davis on trombone! A few cuts also features some even larger backings with light touches of strings – and all the tracks have a very fresh, very contemporary vibe – hardly any sort of outdated jazz orchestra modes. Rotondi wrote all the material himself – and titles include "For Curtis", "Dark Blue", "Ladybug", "Miller Time", "Designated Hitter", and "Falset". CD

✨✧ Eje ThelinSo Far ... LP
Columbia/Be! (Germany), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark set from the Swedish scene of the early 60s – one that shows just how far that nation's jazzmen had grown during the postwar years! Trombonist Eje Thelin's always one of those talents worth checking out, but we especially like him in these early years – as he's overflowing with fresh new ideas, and really seems to set fire to all around him! At some level, some of the sounds here echo the styles of other American trombone innovators – like JJ Johnson and Curtis Fuller – both particularly good choices for reference here, as a few years earlier, Sweden might have produced a player who was much more in a Bob Brookmeyer or Herbie Harper camp. There's a nice edge to Thelin's playing – and he's definitely not afraid to get a bit dirty with his tone – and other players include Ulf Andersson on tenor, Joel Vandroogenbrock on piano, Roman Dylag on bass, and Run Carlsson on drums. Titles include the originals "Folk Song", "So Far", and "Fast" – plus "Lament" and "It Could Happen To You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dave BaileyComplete 1 & 2 Feet In The Gutter Sessions (Getting Into Something/One Foot In The Gutter/Two Feet In The Gutter) ... CD
Columbia/Lonehill (Spain), 1960/1961. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most soulful jazz ever recorded for Columbia Records – 3 albums worth of material from the combo of drummer Dave Bailey! Bailey's probably best known for his work in the Gerry Mulligan group, but for a brief time at the start of the 60s he stepped out as a leader – working with a focus and intensity that easily matched the best hard boppers on Blue Note or Prestige! These 3 records for Columbia are all amazing sets that we'd rank with some of our favorite jazz from the time – razor-sharp records that have a really earthy finish, and which bring out some of the best hardbop work on record from horn soloists Curtis Fuller, Clark Terry, Junior Cook, Charlie Rouse, and Bill Hardman – all of whom really catch fire under Bailey's guidance! But even above the great horn work on the albums, we really have to note the piano – as Horace Parlan plays on 2 of the albums, easily matching his Blue Note classics, and Billy Gardner follows up on the last set – working with a low low bottom that we love from his sides with Lou Donaldson. Bassists are Peck Morrison and Ben Tucker – and titles include "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", "Blues For JP", "One Foot In The Gutter", "Sandu", "Two Feet In The Gutter", "Lady Iris B", "Coffee Walk", and "Brownie Speaks". And if 3 albums' worth of material isn't enough, the CD also features 3 more tunes from Bailey's rare Jazztime session with Grant Green and Frank Hayes – "Reaching Out", "Our Miss Brooks", and "One For Elena". 16 tracks in all – most of them quite long! ✨✧ Art BlakeyMosaic ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD

Blue Note, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most classic Blue Note sessions ever – and for good reason too! From the cover, to the title, to the hardbopping grooves of the set, this Sonny Clark late 50s smoker is one of the label's best – as pianist Clark is working here at the height of his powers – leading an all-star group that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Hank Mobley on tenor, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – all coming together magically on open-ended tunes that tighten up from the blowing session format, and really send the groove home! Plus, Sonny's writing is also great – as the set's got a number of great originals by Clark – and titles include "Bootin' It", "Sonny's Mood", "Shoutin On A Riff", and "Dial S For Sonny".
