The debut album from the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble – a group who take the middle word in their name very seriously – as the set's maybe on the moodier side of the spectrum, and served up with instruments you might normally find in jazz, but taken to very different territory! These guys are a bit in the mode of Cinematic Orchestra or some other groups of that nature from the start of the century – in that they've got a great ability to absorb influences, digest them, and then come out with a sound that's all their own – ambitious, but never overstated – and with a quality that should have gotten these guys a lot of work in film. The second album from this unusual ensemble – a group who maybe take the "dark" in their name a bit more strongly than the "jazz" – and who work here without any real connection to the culture of Kilimanjaro at all! Yet despite that distinction, there's definitely something here that got the group a fair bit of attention when the set was released – a very deep, layered sound that almost makes it impossible to tell where one instrument starts and the next begins – or what's in the blend of sounds at all – almost as if the 4AD aesthetic from years past was pushed into the moodier territory of the downtempo generation, but with the richness of a soundtrack too. Despite the live performance of the group, the sound still has all the moody, layered vibe of the Darkjazz group – not jazz at all, but a deep blend of sonic textures and instrumental sounds that really lose their source referent in the mix – drifting deeply along tracks that all push past well the ten minute mark, and which have a very moody vibe overall!
