Ken RhodesProfile ... LP
Amayana/Sconsolato (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
That's Ken Rhodes, not Fender Rhodes – but the acoustic pianist is more than funky enough on his own – even without any electricity in the mix! The set's got this wonderful rhythm duo – drummer George Greene and bassist Joachim Knauer – who often come on with this really full, frenzied approach – leaping forward along with Ken's tightly comping style on piano, so that the tunes almost hit this funk-modal style that's really unique – and completely sublime all the way through! A few mellower moments round things out nicely – and give the album a depth that recalls some of the Jazz Hip Trio records from the European scene of the same time. Titles include "The Profile", "Stay Be Me", "The Journey", "Triangle", "Eigoob", and "Nothing New". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Greg Foat, Paul Armfield, & Ken BlackGone To The Dogs (10 inch LP) ... LP
Jazzaggression (Estonia), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool trio set from the mighty Greg Foat – working here with two other musicians grabbed on the fly for the recording session – but with results that are every bit as deep as any of his previous projects! Foat plays moody Fender Rhodes and Roland Juno – with this nicely building slow-funk style on the title track, "Gone To The Dogs" – served up in two parts that really let the tune gestate and grow nicely! "Zola's Eyes" has maybe a warmer jazz approach overall – great basswork from Paul Armfield, which brings out some fantastic currents in the Rhodes – and the set closes with "In The Dog House", which has some great funky drums underneath the keyboards. Rob FrankenFender Rhodes ... CD
Sonic Scenery (Netherlands), Mid 70s. Used 2CD ... $26.99
Incredible Fender Rhodes from Rob Franken – a beautiful collection of rare recordings made in the mid 70s! All of this work was never issued here in the US – and most of it features Franken in really laidback, stripped-down settings – working some soulful magic on the keys of the Fender Rhodes, with a depth in sound that easily matches some of the bigger-name keyboardists in the US during the 70s! The package is filled with gems you'd never find in American record racks (or European ones, for that matter!) – and although many of the numbers are trio tunes, a few of them expand the group with other players who include Jimmy Owens or Clark Terry on flugelhorn, and Ernie Wilkins on tenor. Titles include "Absorbed Love", "Title Wave", "Six Seven Eight", "Terry Tune", "Esopet", "Straight Back", and "Look Softly". Also features a bonus CD – with a long live version of "Secret Love", plus interviews and other materials that make an "audio portrait" of Franken, but in Dutch language. CD

✨✧ Ahmad JamalAwakening ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A mindblowing album from Ahmad Jamal – a fantastic start to the 70s, and a set of music that shows just how far the pianist had come in just a few short years! The album's all acoustic, but has some of that spacious flow that Jamal would bring to his work on Fender Rhodes – with an approach that's even more open in terms of song structure than his earlier trio material – as if Jamal's choosing to omit more notes than he's including – but all with a quality that still keeps the music very full and rhythmic – pulsating with a special sort of energy that's neither Bill Evans, nor McCoy Tyner – but instead this really amazing sound that's all Ahmad's own. The trio features equally wonderful work from Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums – and titles include "The Awakening", "I Love Music", "Patterns", "Wave", and "Dolphin Dance". CD

678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ Rob Franken ElectrificationSix Seven Eight ... LP
678 Records (Netherlands), 1975/1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Dutch pianist Rob Franken is at the top of his game here – the top of his electric game, that is – as the album's a masterpiece in Fender Rhodes instrumentals, and right up there with the best US Rhodes work of the time! The album's a dream come true if you're a fan of jazzy electric keys – as Rob brings all his earlier jazz chops into play, while also keeping things nice and lean – so that you get to hear the keys spin out and do their thing – with mostly just the bass of Wim Essed and drums of Hank Zomer providing loose accompaniment! A few tracks appear to have some Arp as well, and most of the album was recorded in 1975 – a particularly wonderful year for keyboard jazz. Titles include "Frisky Frog Funk", "Esopet", "One Finger Snap", "Child Song", "Title Wave", "Spain", "Blame It On The Sun", and "Six Seven Eight". LP, Vinyl record album

Jose Roberto Bertrami & His Modern SoundAventura ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A different groove than usual for Jose Roberto Bertrami – and a record that definitely lives up to the promise of its title! Bertrami's really broken free from the regular Azymuth groove on this set – much more so than on some of his recent solo albums – playing here with a vibe that's very jazzy at times, with a range of different modes – mod one minute, funky the next, and sweetly straight at other points! Jose Roberto handles his familiar Fender Rhodes on most tracks – but also plays a bit of organ and acoustic piano as well – and other instrumentation includes guitar, bass, and drums – plus added horns on some of the fuller, funkier tracks. A few tunes feature some great wordless vocals from Bertrami – scatting along with his keyboards in a warm and breezy way – and production on the set is great, thanks to the Far Out touch – never too smooth, and quite different from any of Bertrami's albums recorded in the US. Titles include "Laranjeiras", "Choro", "No Tempo Da Bossa", "O Pescador", "Ecstatic 70", "Brilliante", "Eighties Times", "Aventura", and "Maixa". CD

Pye/Trunk (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $29.99
That's an angry-looking James Coburn on the cover – a tipoff that you're in for something really special on the record – one of the best-ever soundtracks from the mighty Roy Budd, the man who also gave the world the superb score for Get Carter! There's a few elements here that echo the music for that famous film – including some inventive percussion, moody basslines, and a great use of space – and the lineup of musicians features some surprising contributions from important British jazz artists – including Kenny Baker on trumpet and Tubby Hayes on tenor, Frank Barber on percussion, and Jeff Clyne on bass – plus Roy himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and piano! This is the first-ever extended presentation of music from the soundtrack, a superb treat throughout – with titles that include "Mr Easy", "Death In The Shower", "Alright Alex", "Find A Solution", "The Deal", "Never Think Twice", "Waiting For Murder", "Main Theme", "Somebody's Going To Have To Kill Him", and "Borrowed Time". Chene NoirOrphee 2000 ... LP
Chene Noir/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
A spiritual set from 70s France – but one that has a very different origin than most! Chene Noir come from a theatrical background, and do a wonderful job of mixing up elements – that free-spirited sense of genre-stepping that took place on the French scene after the initial inspirations of visiting American avant players in the late 60s – given a fresh sense of expression in the Saravah generation, in modes that were often overlooked at the time by the rest of the world! The music here is definitely jazz, but brings in some sense of performance too – spoken passages, some vocals – served up in a mix of saxes, vibes, organ, Fender Rhodes, and percussion – the sort of work that someone like Pierre Barouh would have liked to capture in the studio. Titles include "Le Viel Orphee", "Musique De La Nuit", "Musique Du Vieux", "La Route De La Mer", "La Chute", "La Musique D'Orphee", and "Chemin D'Ou L'On Ne Revient Pas". LP, Vinyl record album

Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". CD

Mabumi YamaguchiMabumi (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
Japanese reedman Mabumi Yamaguchi works here with tight combo recorded in the US – Kenny Kirkland on piano and keyboards, Miroslav Vitous on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – players that bring a nice sense of focus to the session, which seems to push his saxophone work even further than usual! Mabumi plays tenor and soprano sax – both with long lines that still pause for space in all the right places – and Kirkland's perhaps the musician who flavors the session the most, as he shifts between piano, Fender Rhodes, and Prophet – while Vitous adds in these soulfully warm basslines, and Williams balances between spacious sounds and more full attack on drums. Titles include "Thalia", "Merry Go Round", "Wizard", "Voices Of The Night", and "Clearways". CD

Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... About July 21, 2021
A pair of live performances – both of them great, and both done in the very open, creative style of the Three Blind Mice label at the time! Side one features core work by the trio of pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, but with key guest work from Isao Suzuki on cello and Sunao Wada on guitar – both players who really open up the groove a lot! Suzuki solos in this great way on a long version of "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and also makes an appearance on "Midnight Sugar" – which also has a long, soulful solo from Wada on guitar. Side two features a long take on "Now's The Time" – done in a freewheeling jam session mode – with Yoshio Otomo and Kenji Mori on alto sax, Takao Uematsu and Mabumi Yamaguchi on tenors, and Toshiyuki Daitoku on Fender Rhodes – all in a group led by drummer George Otsuka. ✨✧ Chick CoreaSecret Agent ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet little set from Chick Corea – one that's got a bit of a Return To Forever vibe at times, but maybe taken down into tighter territory overall – which makes for pure jazz funk greatness throughout! Some tunes have a nice sense of groove – the choppy fusion of RTF, but more focused, and providing a great bump at the bottom for Chick to solo over the top – on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and piano – with help from Joe Farrell on a variety of reeds, Bunny Brunel on bass, and Airto on percussion! There's a small bit of vocals on the set, but Chick's keys are the main star – and titles include "Slinky", "Drifting", "Glebe St Blues", "Fickle Funk", "Bagatelle 4", and "Hot News Blues". CD

✨✧ Albert HeathKwanza (The First) (with bonus track) ... CD
Muse/Xanadu, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, hippest albums you'll ever hear from drummer Albert Tootie Heath – a set that's so different than his earlier work of the 60s, and which has the same sort of righteous, spiritual energy as the Heath Brothers album on Strata East! Albert's got a wonderfully loose vibe on the drums – and the added percussoin he brings into the mix – and the group here features slight electric currents from Kenny Barron on Fender Rhodes and Ted Dunbar on guitar – plus sublime reed lines from brother Jimmy Heath – who really blows it away on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – again like his best Strata East performance! Brother Percy Heath is on bass – which seems to be electric at points – and Curtis Fuller rounds out the group with some of that hipper, more searching trombone style he was using at the time – and the whole thing's wonderful, much more progressive than some of the other Xanadu Records sessions of the period. Titles include "Dunia", "Sub-Set", "Tafadhali", "Oops", and "A Notion". Features the bonus track "Wazuri Blues" – a piano solo by Kenny Barron. CD

A really great take on the music of Sun Ra – served up by a group from the contemporary Polish scene – one who clearly have a strong influence from Ra and his Arkestra, but who also take the sounds in really great directions of their own! The group is maybe a bit heavier on keyboard work than some of the classic recordings – with piano, Fender Rhodes, synths, and moog playing a strong role throughout – amidst a duo of horns from Jakub Kurek on trumpet and Olaf Wegier on soprano, alto, and tenor – providing a leaner version of the sound that you'd hear from the Arkestra, but one that's also got a lot of focus and energy too. The record intersperses spoken bits by Ra in a really great way – and titles include versions of "Interstellar Low Ways", "Neo Project 2", "Trying To Put The Blame On Me", "UFO", "The Lady With The Golden Stockings", and "Brainville". We're sure that Jimmy Greene shot that cover photo before the Covid-19 lockdown, but the image has a particularly strong resonance after all of us have faced that situation – which is why the "looking up" title on the album is very well placed! Greene's music has this sense of positivity that's really great – not an easy, blithely optimistic vibe – but this personal spirit that really comes through in his music – a vibe that's uplifting, but never too facile too – this great quality that comes through the interplay of Jimmy's work on tenor and soprano, with guitar from Lage Lund, piano and Fender Rhodes from Aaron Goldberg, bass from Reuben Rogers, and drums from Kendrick Scott – plus some guest vibes from Stefon Harris too. Most tracks are Greene originals – and titles include "Overreaction", "Steadfast", "Simple Prayer", "While Looking Up", and "April 4th". CD

Wonderfully fluid work from the great Eddie Henderson – a record that's wrapped up in that beautiful glow and searching, soulful energy that only seems to get better and better over the years! The record's got some great partners on board – including George Cables on piano and some especially great Fender Rhodes – the latter of which really reopens the glow in Henderson's music from years past, but with a much different vibe than the 70s. Gary Bartz also plays alto on most of the record – sounding wonderful as he opens up and soars – and the rest of the group features Doug Weiss on bass and Carl Allen on drums – both players who can be tight, but loose in all the right ways. Henderson's trumpet and flugelhorn lead with a veteran's wisdom, but youthful energy – and the pieces include takes on his own classic "Sunburst" and "Dreams", Cables's "Morning Song" and "Beyond Forever", plus "You Know I Care", "First Light", "Together", "Ginger Bread Boy", "Spring" and "Zoltan" – the last of which is taken in the best vintage Woody Shaw spirit! Fantastic Fender Rhodes from Yusuke Hirado – plus a fair bit of other keyboards too – all delivered in a set that mixes 70s space jazz funk with some great contemporary elements, and in a way that's nicely different than Hirado's work in the group Quasimode! The set's got some old school rhythms, but plenty more moments that soar and take off with very contemporary cosmic energy – very strongly in a jazz perspective overall, but with a strong knowledge of all the other musical changes that have taken place on the hipper scenes around the globe over the past 20 years – woven into classic keyboard sounds that take on a whole new shape in the setting! A real standout in the 70s catalog of Elvin Jones – for a number of key reasons! First up, the set's got more of an electric vibe than usual – thanks to Fender Rhodes from Kenny Barron and guitar from Ryo Kawasaki, who really help shape the sound of the set! Second, production is by Ed Bland – who does a masterful job of blending soul, spirit, and harder-edged jazz modes – on tunes that often have a nice modal vibe at the core! The group also features excellent alto work from Bunky Green – who really sparkles strongly throughout, and who also wrote more than half the material on the album. Guests include Frank Wess on flute, Frank Foster on soprano, and George Coleman on tenor – and titles include "Frost Bite", "Digital Display", "Moon Dance", "Time Capsule", and "Spacing". CD

The record has lots of bubbling electric piano, rumbling electric basslines, warm acoustic percussion, and moody wordless vocals. Williams plays plenty of Fender Rhodes on the set, mostly in a trio setting, but one that's far from standard jazz – as the rhythms often reflect his roots in hip hop, although played live by drummer Joshua McKenzie and bassist Pete Martin – who also have the ability to send Williams soaring to the skies with this magnificent spiritual energy! Consider this set to maybe be a Lonnie Liston Smith album for the hip hop generation – and praise Allah for Kamaal's mighty talents on the keys, and the sharp production skills of Henry Wu. One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! Continuing genius from the great Robert Glasper – a set that has the keyboardist going back to basics, and working in just a trio mode – live in the studio, and with stunning sound! Robert plays acoustic piano, but as with his early years, he's got this fluidity that really makes it feel like electric at times – a way of using the standard keys as if they belonged to a Fender Rhodes – a sound that comes across especially well with the snapping drums of Diamond Read, and round acoustic basslines from Vincent Archer. If you weren't hip to Glasper at this earlier mode in his career, you'll find plenty to love here – especially as some of the tunes are reworks of the sorts of music he'd do with his Black Radio project, but served up here in a mostly instrumental mode. The album does feature one guest appearance from Harry Belafonte – who's really amazing on a spoken part for "Got Over" – and other titles include "Reckoner", "I Don't Even Care", "In Case You Forgot", "The Worst", "So Beautiful", "I'm Dying Of Thirst", and "Levels". Titles include "Salaam", "The Return", "High Roller", "Situations", "Rhythm Commission", "Catch The Loop", "Medina", and "LDN Shuffle". LP, Vinyl record album
