Karl Hector & The MalcounsCan't Stand The Pressure ... CD
Now Again, 2015. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
The first-ever CD issue of a range of material from this ultra-hip group – all tracks that originally appeared on vinyl-only releases, now making their CD debut in an overstuffed collection that features 24 tracks in all! The vibe here is great – that Karl Hector & The Malcouns mix of deep funk instrumentation and various global elements – almost an imagined version of 70s sounds from Africa and the Mid East, but served up with the sensibilities of a deep funk combo – which is what they are, given that the group is just the Whitefield Brothers and Poets Of Rhythm, working here under another one of their many names! Yet the instrumentation is quite different than those other acts, too – much more rootsy and filled with a lot of organic percussion and other global elements – as you'll hear on titles that include "Shangold", "Leealah", "Roads Of Otumpa", "Tamanrasset", "JB Rip", "Irtijal", "The Cave", "Orange", "Transition X", "Medium Rare (part 1)", "Beyond Squares", and "Coomassi". Karl Hector & The MalcounsNon Ex Orbis ... CD
Now Again, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Some of the fullest, freakiest sounds we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – and a set that almost has the contemporary combo resonating with some of the older psych and fuzz that often gets reissued on the Now Again label! JJ Whitefield – of Whitefield Brothers/Poets Of Rhythm fame – is at the helm of the group, and also handles the production – and the whole thing is a deep shift from the sharper, funkier style of his early material – as this record's really awash in fuzz and long, languorous space – drawing elements from older funk, jazz, and global elements, and pushing them all through a mighty cool psych-styled filter. Marja Burchard sings some cool wordless vocals on the record, but most of the focus here is instrumental – with great organ, vibes, moog, and plenty of fuzzy guitar. Titles include "Crawling Through Your Mind", "Hymnins (extended)", "Inhale/Exhale", "Mother Seletta", "Dekagon", and "Asteroid". CD

Karl Hector & The MalcounsUnstraight Ahead ... CD
Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 17.98
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". ✨✧ Karl Hector & The MalcounsSahara Swing ... CD
Now Again, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest albums from the funky empire that includes Poets Of Rhythm and The Whitefield Brothers – a set of Afro-exotic grooves that really blows our minds – and which opens the group up into whole new territory! There's echoes of Mulatu, Salah Ragab, and other older exotic funk artists in the mix – but as usual for the Poets, the whole thing's put together with a sharp edge of its own – a keen ear for catching the best elements of the original music, and distilling them down to a super-powerful essence – then re-presenting and oddly-producing them with some very unique sounds! Karl Hector joins the group on vocals and percussion – and other instrumentation includes ballaphon, metallophon, horns, and keyboards – all used in really enigmatic ways, and with other-worldly sounds that are simply amazing! Titles include "Followed Path", "When The Sun Breaks Through", "Sahara Swing", "Jabore (part 3)", "Debere", "Transition", "Mystical Brotherhood", "Toure Samar", and "Passau Run". CD

✨✧ VariousKraut Jazz Futurism – A New Wave Of German Bands Inspired By Krautrock, Afrobeat, Jazz, & Electronica (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Kryptox (Germany), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great little collection that's everything it promises in the title – a survey of the current German underground, with a focus on the best bands who've been inspired by the styles of the past! Apart from Karl Hector & The Malcouns, all the other work here is new to our ears – and the set's not just a collection of other releases, but also features a fair bit of debut tracks that show up here for the first time ever – and some others that never had anything other than a brief digital history online! Most of these artists really know how to take off from their inspirations – not just recreate music from the past, but use elements of modes like jazz funk or afro beat in great new settings – really opening up the German scene with the same sort of excitement we felt when we first encountered Compost Records many years back. Titles include "Der Inder" by Karaba, "Magnolia Tree" by Salomea, "Space Station" by David Nesselhauf, "Dick Schaffrath" by CAR, "Acrasian Beat" by Sissi Rada, "The Little Giant" by Stimming x Lambert, "Orange Man" by Karl Hector & The Malcouns, "El Fuego" by Toresch, "Night In Bacalar" by Keope, and "Balanphontanz In Drei Schuben" by Nicklas Wandt.
