Karl Berger with Masahiko SatoWith Silence ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $16.99
There's nothing silent here – as the album's one of the most biting 70s albums we've heard from vibist Karl Berger – an album that's relatively free overall, and which features some fantastic work by Masahiko Sato on piano! Sato really seems to bring out the darker tones in Berger's vibes, and his sometimes use of marimbas – really wonderful hues that are especially compelling when the whole group takes off for a long free run of improvisation! Other players include Allen Blairman on drums and Adelhard Roidinger on bass – and titles include "From Now On", "With Silence", "Get Up", and "The Only One Of Its Kind In My Garden". CD
(Part of the "Enja – Real Jazz Classics" series!)

MUUN/CMC, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Very out, very abstract 70s improv recorded live in concert in New York's Peace Church. Side one features a larger group wit Karl Berger, Dave Holland, Bob Moses and Richard Tietelbaum, plus some less well known performers such as vocalist Ing Rid, and Tom Schmidt, Ilene Marder and Betty McDonald. Side two features a smaller group based around Berger, Holland, Rid, Teitelbaum and tromobonist Garrett List. All tracks are quite lengthy, with titles that include "Live Time", "Dance Now As We Are", "The Continual Pattern", "Music Is", and "Tune In Time In". LP, Vinyl record album

Karl Hector & The MalcounsCan't Stand The Pressure ... CD
Now Again, 2015. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The first-ever CD issue of a range of material from this ultra-hip group – all tracks that originally appeared on vinyl-only releases, now making their CD debut in an overstuffed collection that features 24 tracks in all! The vibe here is great – that Karl Hector & The Malcouns mix of deep funk instrumentation and various global elements – almost an imagined version of 70s sounds from Africa and the Mid East, but served up with the sensibilities of a deep funk combo – which is what they are, given that the group is just the Whitefield Brothers and Poets Of Rhythm, working here under another one of their many names! Yet the instrumentation is quite different than those other acts, too – much more rootsy and filled with a lot of organic percussion and other global elements – as you'll hear on titles that include "Shangold", "Leealah", "Roads Of Otumpa", "Tamanrasset", "JB Rip", "Irtijal", "The Cave", "Orange", "Transition X", "Medium Rare (part 1)", "Beyond Squares", and "Coomassi". Karl Hector & The MalcounsNon Ex Orbis ... CD
Now Again, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Some of the fullest, freakiest sounds we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – and a set that almost has the contemporary combo resonating with some of the older psych and fuzz that often gets reissued on the Now Again label! JJ Whitefield – of Whitefield Brothers/Poets Of Rhythm fame – is at the helm of the group, and also handles the production – and the whole thing is a deep shift from the sharper, funkier style of his early material – as this record's really awash in fuzz and long, languorous space – drawing elements from older funk, jazz, and global elements, and pushing them all through a mighty cool psych-styled filter. Marja Burchard sings some cool wordless vocals on the record, but most of the focus here is instrumental – with great organ, vibes, moog, and plenty of fuzzy guitar. Titles include "Crawling Through Your Mind", "Hymnins (extended)", "Inhale/Exhale", "Mother Seletta", "Dekagon", and "Asteroid". CD

✨✧ Karl Hector & The MalcounsSahara Swing ... CD
Now Again, 2008. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
One of the hippest albums from the funky empire that includes Poets Of Rhythm and The Whitefield Brothers – a set of Afro-exotic grooves that really blows our minds – and which opens the group up into whole new territory! There's echoes of Mulatu, Salah Ragab, and other older exotic funk artists in the mix – but as usual for the Poets, the whole thing's put together with a sharp edge of its own – a keen ear for catching the best elements of the original music, and distilling them down to a super-powerful essence – then re-presenting and oddly-producing them with some very unique sounds! Karl Hector joins the group on vocals and percussion – and other instrumentation includes ballaphon, metallophon, horns, and keyboards – all used in really enigmatic ways, and with other-worldly sounds that are simply amazing! Titles include "Followed Path", "When The Sun Breaks Through", "Sahara Swing", "Jabore (part 3)", "Debere", "Transition", "Mystical Brotherhood", "Toure Samar", and "Passau Run". CD

Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 17.98
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". ✨✧ Karl Evangelista/Alexander Hawkins/Louis Moholo-Moholo/Trevor WattsApura ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the first album we've ever heard from guitarist Karl Evangelista as a leader – and a set that marks a very strong statement, right from the very first note! The set is done in tribute to an older British generation of free jazz – the period which included The Blue Notes and Spontaneous Music Ensemble – and, as part of that effort, the whole thing was recorded in London, by Benedic Lamdin, with a group that features Louis Moholo Moholo on drums, Trevor Watts on alto and soprano, and Alexander Hawkins on piano! While the two older British jazz giants are a very welcome presence, some of the album's most compelling sounds might well come from the mix of Evangelista's guitar and Hawkins' piano – both instruments that have a very compelling way of making sharp sounds together, really finding the right pace and tone, with a sense of sympathy that really makes the album shine. There's a heck of a lot of music on the double-length set – and titles include "FDT", "Siyanga Pala", "I Eat Death For Breakfast", "Totoo Yan", "State Of Emergency", "Consummatum Est", "Warriors", and "Player Piano". ✨✧ Karl Berger & Ed BlackwellJust Play (with bonus track) ... CD
Quark/Emanem (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A massive meeting of vibes and percussion – and easily one of the best albums we've ever heard from Karl Berger! The proceedings here are very open and improvised, yet also have a rhythmic pulse too – that quality you'd definitely expect from Blackwell, which brings in structure even amidst freedom – keeping things strongly on course as the pair really experiment with a wide range of tones and colors! In addition to his usual vibes (played here without any electric fans to widen the sound), Berger also makes some mighty nice use of the balafon – using the African instrument with some great rootsy tones. Blackwell's a master on the conventional drum kit, as always – and also adds in a bit of osi drum too – and the tracks are nice and long, with titles that include "Steps", "Balafon Samba", "South Of Imperial", "We Are", "Wood & Skin Works", and "Just Play". Here, he makes his Blue Note debut – proving that he can be just as tight and funky with major grooving players like Melvin Sparks and Leon Spencer, and working with other up and coming talents like Charlie Hunter, Ron Levy, and DJ Logic, who adds turntables to a few tracks. Titles include "A Shorter Path 1 & 2", "Dance Lesson #2", "Like Like Dope", "Who Are You?", and "Flute Down". CD

Karl (UK), 1968/1980/1989/1995. New Copy ... $24.99
A limited vinyl collection of work from the legendary Chicago pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – one of the founding members of the AACM, a hell of an improviser, and a musician who's also featured here with a focus on both his larger compositional vision, and some of his rare electronic performances! Side one features the classic "The Bird Song" from the late 60s – a long piece that features Anthony Braxton on alto, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Thurman Barker on drums, and Abrams on piano and clarinet – plus some vocals from David Moore. Next are two shorter electronic pieces from 1989 and 1995 – "Conversations With The Three Of Me" and "Think All Focus One". The set finishes with the title track of Abrams' great album "Spihumonesty" – with Muhal on piano and electronics, Amina Claudine Myers on electric piano and organ, Roscoe Mitchell on alto and flute, Yousef Yancey on theremin, and George Lewis on trombone and electronics. Konstrukt are a pretty great group on their own – a quartet of Turkish improvisers who have some really dynamic energy – but this time around, they also add the tremendous talents of Ken Vandermark to their sound, which really knocks that record out of the park! The tracks are full of improvisation, but also have a strong rhythmic core – work from Berkan Tilavel on drums, Apostolos Sideris on bass, and Umut Caglar on guitar, guimbri, and gralla – really pulsating together as Caglar breaks free for solo moments alongside Kohran Futaci, who mostly blows alto sax, but also adds in a few live effects. Vandermark is on tenor and clarinet, and really a powerhouse throughout – on titles that include "Diggin That Harmolody", "Ex-cess", "Bammm", "Cocoon", "East Of West West Of East", and "Semazen". Morton SubotnickSilver Apples Of The Moon (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Nonesuch/Karl (UK), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
One of THE electronic records of the 60s – an album so important, the Silver Apples took their name from the title – and a whole other generation of artists took strong inspiration from the electronic creations of Morton Subotnick! Before the set, much electronic music of this nature was a bit more academic, and often slightly cold – but Subotnick was able to bring things into a more organic, maybe more freewheeling style – using all sorts of cool analogue elements in ways that would run through Perry & Kingsley, Beaver & Krause, and even Stereolab! The work is billed as the "first original full-scale composition created expressly for the record medium" – a great testament to Subotnick's intentions for his creation, and a desire to get it more widely circulated than previous electronic recordings. Daniel BingertBerit In Space ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
A tremendous achievement in jazz from Daniel Bingert – the kind of record that would be in everyone's collection, had it been issued back in 1959 – but a set that's every bit as essential all these decades later! Binger's the composer, and has kind of a postwar modern sensibility about his music – that mix of core elements and individual voices that made Mingus so great when he was at his best – except Daniel's also got more of an ear for modal rhythms, of the sort that remind us a bit of the inspirations on the European scene during the Saba/MPS generation, taken forward with some of the fresher, completely visionary ideas that we've always loved from the Moserobie label! The group's a sextet with some key Moserobie members in the line up – Jonas Kullhammar on alto, Karl Olandersson on trumpet, Per Texas Johansson on tenor, Charlie Malmberg on piano, Moussa Fadera on drums, and the mighty Torbjorn Zetterberg on bass – whose energy alone is enough to guide the album. Titles include "City Sirens", "Cinco De Mayo", "Henry & Bernard", "Notredame", "Lost Keys", "Gil Bill", and "Kaya Boca". CD

Never-issued work from this legendary fusion group – a 1971 live performance recorded in Rotterdam, and a set of tracks that's a perfect complement to the legendary Nucleus albums issued by Vertigo at the time! Leader Ian Carr is upfront on trumpet – but as with the best Nucleus recordings, this is definitely an all-out group affair – driven by very strong work from John Marshall on drums and Roy Babbington on bass – and filled with work from two different simultaneous electric pianos, handled by both Hywel Thomas and Karl Jenkins, the latter of whom also blows a bit of oboe. Other reeds are from Brian Smith on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – and all tracks are nice and long, and often quite funky – with titles that include "Snakehips Dream", "We'll Talk About It Later", "Song For The Bearded Lady", "Exit Interlude 1", "Persephone's Jive", "Exit Interlude 2", and "Oasis". Dave DeRoseAgile Experiments Vol 1 ... LP
Dave De Rose Music (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. Although Manos Hadjidakis' soundtrack work of the 60s is mostly in the Greek-sounding mode, this one features him hitting a bit of a western soundtrack feel – to back a drama starring Terence Stamp, Ricardo Montalban, and Karl Malden. About half the tracks are instrumentals with an orchestral feel, and the others are similar, but have slight "westerny" touches – although not as much so as work for Italian films of the same time. The title certainly gets it right – as Derrick Harriott serves up a wonderful mix of sounds that owes plenty to American funk and soul of the early 70s – some cool Kingston covers of famous US tunes, and some other originals that are equally groovy overall! The set's one of the best that we've ever heard from the Dub Store label – and almost has a Soul Jazz level of track selection – really wonderful work that either features Derrick in the lead, or working with some hip contemporaries, in a groove that's totally great – neither straight reggae, but also quite far from more familiar funk and soul too. Titles include "Black Moses" by The Preacher, "Tougher Than Tough" by I Roy, "Brown Baby" by Derrick Harriott, "Hell Below" by Crystal Generation, "Going Back Home" by The Chosen Few, "Psychedelic Train" by Derrick Harriott, "Slippery" by Karl Bryan & The Crystalites, "Home Sweet Home" by Bongo Herman & Les, "Rescue The Children" by Junior Murvin, "Phoenix" by Noel Brown, "People Make The World Go Round" by The Chosen Few, and "Message From A Black Man" by Derrick Harriott. Linda HoylePieces Of Me/The Fetch (with bonus track) ... CD
Vertigo/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of albums from this overlooked singer! First up is Pieces Of Me – the debut solo album from Linda Hoyle – an overlooked British singer, but a great one from the same generation that gave us Christine Perfect (later McVie) – graced with a similarly strong range and equal inspiration from earlier blues recordings! Yet also like Christine, Linda stretches out with these confident modes that really move past her roots – which also include previous performances with the group Affinity, although she's a much stronger solo act on her own! The core group of players on the set are more than enough of a pedigree of its quality – with guitars from Chris Spedding, drums from John Marshall, and bass from Jeff Clyne – plus piano, electric piano, production, and larger arrangements from Karl Jenkins – who really makes the whole thing sound wonderful. The set was also produced by Pete King for Ronnie Scott Productions – one more excellent piece of the pie – and titles include "Lonely Woman", "Backlash Blues", "Black Crow", "Morning For One", "Journey's End", "The Ballad Of Morty Mole", and "Pieces Of Me". The Fetch is a much different record overall, but still has Linda's great vocals at the core – done in recent years, which might be tipped off by the later cover image by Roger Dean – and done with an assortment of mellower modes served up by guitars (acoustic and electric), keyboards, and a mix of live drums and electronic rhythms. The instrumentation is relatively stripped-down, and Linda's vocals are still wonderful – almost the majesty of Norma Winstone in her later years, but more tunefully song-based – on titles that include "Maida Vale", "Cut & Run", "Brighton Pier", "The Fetch", "Snowy Night", and "Earth & Stars". Vertigo/Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... $42.99
Seminal sounds from trumpeter Ian Carr and his Nucleus group of the early 70s – maybe one of the few jazz rock groups that was ever able to work with a fair bit of jazz in their sound! Unlike his contemporaries, who often started in rock first, then added some horns – Carr was already coming off an important 60s legacy, co-leading a group with tenorist Don Rendell – so the vibe here is like an extension of that very rhythmic, very tonal modern work – but with the addition of electrified instrumentation – thanks to the guitar work of Chris Spedding and keyboards of Karl Jenkins – who plays some fantastic electric lines throughout! The vibe is maybe a bit in the territory of early 70s electric work by Miles Davis and Donald Byrd (pre-Mizell for the latter) – but there's maybe a farther-reaching concept at play on many of the records, at a level that always helped the group cross over to the prog crowd, and move beyond just a straight jazz audience. Other key players include Brian Smith on tenor and soprano saxes – a really fantastic part of the lineup – plus Jeff Clyne on bass and John Marshall on drums – and as the albums move along a bit, the lineup shifts slightly, and also opens up to guests who include Kenny Wheeler and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Tony Levin on drums, and Norma Winstone on voice. And although some of the albums have been reissued before, this is the first set to really dive in completely – and bring together material from the Vertigo Records releases that include Elastic Rock, We'll Talk About It Later, Solar Plexus, Belladonna, Labyrinth, Roots, Under The Sun, Snakehips Etcetera, and Alley Cat. ✨✧ Soft MachineSix ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A beautifully burning double-length set from Soft Machine – proof that the group were really at the height of their powers during the early 70s – magically blending together jazz, rock, and fusion into one soaringly spacey new sound! The work here is a key fore-runner of countless trends to come – including recent keyboard-heavy work on the cosmic club scene – particularly 4 Hero and the generation of others that sprang up in their wake. Soft Machine have a similar British bent for blending styles here – using jazz elements that are on a par with their best contemporaries in the straighter part of that genre – but fusing them together with a more pulsating approach to rhythm that pushes all the solo bits wonderfully! There's a fair bit of groove heavy tracks here that still sound as fresh today as when they were recorded – and the album features great drums from John Marshall, keyboards from Mike Ratledge, bass from Hugh Hopper, and a wide variety of reeds from Karl Jenkins. The album's a rich tapestry of long and short tracks, all woven together – and titles include "All White", "Between", "Riff", "EPV", "Stumble", "5 From 13", "Riff II", "The Soft Weed Factor", and "Chloe & The Pirates". Unseen Worlds, 1976. New Copy 2CDs ... $12.99 14.99
An early live performance by two of the more compelling modern composers of the 70s – both artists working here in mode that fuses their larger ideas onto the idiom of a rock band – but all with a vibe that resonates strongly with their later releases on the Lovely Music label! The first half of the set was composed by Blue Gene Tyranny, the second by Peter Gordon – but the group here is the same throughout, recorded at a live concert in Berkley, providing a great precursor to the later, better-known careers of both composers. There are vocals from Patrice Magnet on some tracks (including a few with lyrics by Kathy Acker), but the songs are often long, and have qualities that reflect the bigger concept works of both Gordon and Tyranny. Musicians include Peter Gordon on saxes and mixing, Tyranny on piano, Karl Young on saxes and woodwinds, Paul Dresher on guitars, and Gene Reffkin on percussion – and there's also some live mixing taking place during the entire performance, creating more complications in the sound. Titles include "Without Warning", "On The Other Hand", "Leading A Double Life", "Machomusic", "God's A Man", "When Baby Gets Wet", and "Intervallic Expansion". CD

Be! (Germany), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99
Incredible sounds from the German Jazz Festival of 1964 – a wonderful meeting of modern talents from all over the European continent at the time – including some great work from behind the Iron Curtain too! The album features a few tracks each by a number of different groups – all of them excellent, and the sorts of players who are really under-represented in terms of available recordings – which makes this selection of tracks completely essential! The set begins with "Sopranitis" and "Birmingham Post" – played by a very cool combo with Heinz Sauer on tenor and soprano sax, Joki Freund on the same two instruments, Emil Mangelsdorff on alto, and Gunther Kornberg on alto and baritone – a four-sax group that works with just bass and drums to give them a groove, with strong solos from all players. Next up is the fantastic Zagreb Jazz Quartet – with Bosko Petrovic on vibes – playing "In Walked Bud" and "Degressia" – plus a version of "Bluesette" with a guest appearance by Sven Asmussen. Tenor player Karl Drevo (Drewo) leads a quintet with trumpeter Maffy Falay and pianist Bora Rokovic – on a long reading of "Save Your Love For Me". The legendary quartet of saxophonist Klaus Doldinger is next – his great group with Ingfried Hoffmann on Hammond, Peter Trunk on bass, and Klaus Weiss on drums – with guest work by Rolf Kuhn on tenor and Inge Brandenberg on vocals – on the titles "Waltz Of The Jive Cats", "What's The Matter Daddy", and "Groovin In Berlin". Last up is one of our favorite groups of the time – the quintet of pianist Michael Naura, which also features Wolfgang Schluter on vibes and Peter Reinke on alto – on "Rainy Clouds" and "Rhythm A Ning". Be! (Germany), 1967/1968. New Copy 6CD ... $99.99 107.99
Fantastic work from two different years of this important German Jazz Festival – material that provides a great live complement to some of the best studio jazz recordings of the late 60s European scene – such as those coming from the MPS label, and some of the record companies in Paris and London! The vibe here is mostly straight, but there are plenty of currents of modern, and maybe just a bit of free – and the set's especially great in illustrating the sort of unique groupings and musical moments that can make the jazz festival scene so rewarding! Material from 1967 includes three long tracks by the group of saxophonist Klaus Doldinger with organist Ingfried Hoffmann; a long performance from a big band led by Kurt Edelhagen, with work from trumpeters Shake Keane and Jimmy Deuchar, tenorists Wilton Gaynair and Karl Drewo, and altoist Derek Humble; four tracks by a quartet led by trumpeter Dusko Goykovich, with Bent Jaedig on tenor; two long improvisations from a group that features Manfred Schoof on trumpet, Gerd Dudek on tenor, Alexander Von Schlippenbach on piano, and Jaki Liebezeit on drums; one track by a quartet with Ted Curson on trumpet and Nick Bridnola on soprano sax; four long cuts by the Clarke Boland Sextet, with Sahib Shihab on flute and baritone, Ake Persson on trombone, and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet; a sweet large group led by organist Ingfried Hoffmann, and a few other hip cuts too. 1968 features work by a sextet led by bassist Peter Trunk, with Shake Keane on flugelhorn, Jiggs Whigham on trombone, and Rob Pronk on piano; four tracks by the Clarke Boland Big Band, with Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, and Sahib Shihab on baritone; two cuts by the twin tenor group of Hank Mobley and Johnny Griffin; a vocal performance by Jon Hendricks with a Clarke Boland group with Johnny Griffin in the lead; twin trombones from the Slide Hampton and Ake Persson Quintet; hip work from the trio of pianist George Gruntz, bassist Henri Texier, and drummer Daniel Humair; a number of tight tracks from the Maynard Ferguson big band, with Pete King on tenor; and two shorter trio tracks from Joachim Kuhn. Like other Be Music titles, the presentation is great – a really well-done box, and big booklet of notes and images. CD

Way more than an "encore" of the legendary Clarke Boland album Golden Eight – and instead a whole different set of recordings, done way back in 1961, but unissued until now! The album's a killer through and through – every bit the same sort of gem you'd get with the early Clarke Boland albums of the pre-MPS years – extremely tight large ensemble jazz, driven with plenty of soul in the rhythm section, and swinging with some incredible solos that further deepen the sound! Right from the start, the pair were totally on the money – and work here with a lineup that's filled with key European soloists, including Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Derek Humble on alto sax, Karl Drewo on tenor, and Fats Sadi on percussion – not to mention the core crack rhythm trio of Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Incredible work from trumpeter Franz Koglmann – a musician who doesn't always get the same sort of credit as his avant jazz contemporaries – but who certainly warrants strong recognition for the depth of this set! The record is bristling with brilliance – and has this mixture of free expressions balanced with a sense of structure – in a way that's almost a link between the loft jazz world of the 70s New York scene, and some of the Hat Hut or Soul Note productions to come! Side one has Franz working with a quintet that also features Bill Dixon on trumpet, plus Steve Horenstein on tenor, Alan Silva on bass, and Muhammad Malli on cymbals – a group that sparkles with these fantastic organic rhythm progressions next to standout solos from the horns. Side two features two tracks with a quintet that also includes Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Joseph Traindi on trombone, Cesarius Alvim Botelho on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums – and one more with a trio that includes Toni Michlmayr on bass and Gerd Geier on electronics. The Lacy tracks are tremendous – and it's a very fresh setting for Steve to be blowing alongside Koglmann's flugelhorn – and the electronics tracks have a sound that's very unusual too, not like any other jazz approach we've heard in the format. Titles include "For Franz", "Der Vogel Opium", "Carmilla", and "Karl Und Das Lochspapier". CD

Emanem (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An incredible package – one that brings together two very important albums from reedman Steve Lacy – plus unreleased material from the same time too! First up is the record Disposability – presented here with the first-ever correction to the cymbal sound – a key session in the development of Steve Lacy – and a great one too! The album was one of Lacy's first European recordings – caught in the studio in Rome in 1965, with a very free-styled trio that includes Alberto Romano on drums and Kent Carter on bass. Lacy's working here at a level that takes off from his earlier Thelonious Monk-influenced experiments on soprano sax – in a style that's still relatively angular and quite modern, but which also has some looser, freer approaches to the music – spinning out in styles that really point the way towards his music of the 70s. Tracks are relatively short, keeping things somewhat restrained – and titles include versions of Monk's "Pannonica", "Shuffle Boil", and "Comin On The Hudson" – plus "Generous 1", "There We Were", "M's Transport", and "Tune 2". Sortie is quite a rare Italian album from Steve Lacy – featuring a quartet with Enrico Rava on trumpet, Kent Carter on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums – the same group on Lacy's Disposability album, but with the excellent addition of trumpet – which gives the music an even more powerful sound! The mixture of Lacy's soprano and Rava's trumpet is wonderful – and Carter and Romano are on fire in terms of their rhythms – post-Monk, post-Ornette, but also maybe still with more structure than some of the free jazz generation to come – a great balance that really draws some soulful currents from Lacy's horn. Titles include "Black Elk", "Helmy", "Fork New York", "Living T Blues", and "Sortie". Next are 13 tracks used as cues in the film Free Fall – recorded in New York in 1967 with Lacy, Rava, and Carter – plus the addition of Karl Berger and Paul Motian. The music is quite interesting – less totally free, then thoughtfully arranged for images on the screen – and the sounds are another amazing chapter in these formative years of Lacy. Last up are three tracks recorded in Paris in 1972 – never-issued music from a famous Lacy quintet that features Steve Potts on alto, Kent Carter on bass, Noel McGhie on drums, and Irene Aebi on cello. The work is tremendous – right at the start of that huge wave of Lacy creativity in Paris for the 70s – and the group plays "The Rush" and "The Thing", the latter in two parts. CD

A groundbreaking early album from guitarist John McLaughlin – a set that's a bit different than his more famous work of the mid 70s – with maybe a more avant approach, and a lot more bite as well! The set's really an equal collaboration, rather than just a McLaughlin session – although it's become known as such, since the guitarist is the most famous musician – amongst a fantastic lineup that includes John Surman on reeds, Karl Berger on vibes, Dave Holland on bass, and Stu Martin on drums – all working in a freewheeling mode that's a lot like some of Surman's Trio records on the Dawn label from the same time! Surman is especially great here – adding in soulful currents at some spots, freer lines at others – and it's great to hear the tones of McLaughlin's guitar balanced against Berger's vibes. Soft Machine's great couple of studio LPs and their live album for Harvest Records – Bundles, Softs and Alive & Well Recorded In Paris – a nice little 3CD box set! Bundles is the first non-numbered Soft Machine LP, and a record that finds the group moving into electric Miles influenced jazz rock, perhaps more profoundly than ever before. Really cool stuff, especially if you like some electric jazz grooving in your space rock! Allan Holdsworth's guitar is dizzying, with Karl Jenkin's piano and disparate other instrumentation (oboe & soprano sax) holding together a set that he composed much of, plus Mike Rattledge's keys and synths adding spacey touches. Includes Hazard (Pts 1-5), "Gone Sailing", "Bundles", "The Floating World", "Four Gongs Two Drums" and more. Softs has a moody, melodic keyboard, synth & piano led sound – a '76 effort from a period with Karl Jenkins was largely at the wheel! Jenkins composed most of the material, and his piano, electric keys, string and Mini Moog are prominent features – but Soft Machine still brings the spacey rock, with heavy drums, bass grooves and unhinged guitar solos. Titles include "Aubade", "Tale Of The Taliesin", "Song Of Aeolus", "Second Bundle", "Nexus", "One Over The Eight", "Etika" and more. Last up is a live set recorded in Paris in 1977 – with the period Soft Machine players including John Marshall on drums and percussion, Karl Jenkins on piano and keyboards, John Etheridge on guitars, Rick Sanders on violin, and Steve Cook on bass bring doing their inimitable thing on "The Nodder", "White Kite", "Eos", "Odds Bullets & Blades", and "Song Of The Sunbird" and more. No Business (Lithuania), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD

OddjobJazzoo Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
Out Note (Sweden), 2018. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
Maybe the coolest project we've ever heard from Oddjob – that groovy Swedish jazz ensemble that features lots of offbeat work on trumpet from Goran Kajfes! The approach here is maybe hinted at by the title – as the group serve up instrumental tracks that each take the sound and shape of a different animal in a zoo – all instrumental, and way cooler than you might guess from the kid book style of illustration – and rhythmic enough to live up to the group's previous legacy, but without any drum programs or production elements – just very creative instrumentation by the combo! Kajfes plays a slide trumpet as well as his usual instrument – which makes for mighty nice sounds – and Per Rusktrask Johansson handles a range of saxes, both electric and acoustic, plus flutes, clarinets, and mouth harp – alongside Daniel Karlsson on piano, keyboards, and organ, Peter Forss on bass, and either Janne Robertson or Lars Skoglund on drums. Titles include "The Kangaroo", "The Duck", "The Bear", "The Ants & The Elephants", "The Pig", "The Penguin", "The Butterfly", "The Camel & The Snake", "The Fly", and "The Cockroach". CD
(Includes a nicely-illustrated book – and instructions for an "augmented reality" experience via app!)

✨✧ VariousLadies Of Too Slow To Disco Vol 2 ... CD
How Do You Are (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $15.99
Sweet AOR grooving from this excellent series – a set that's equal parts pop and soul, but which definitely falls more on the soulful side of the spectrum! Like the best work of the 70s AOR generation, there's a great ear here for tunes that mix in jazzy elements, strong musicianship, and vocals that manage to do a lot with a little – expressive, but never too over the top, and always managing to fit perfectly within the groove! This fantastic "too slow" series has really reinvented our conception of 70s AOR – and the track list here is filled with gems that include "Mon Ami-E" by Diane Tell, "Love The Way You Love Me" by Martin Caine, "For David" by Martee Lebous, "Here I Go Fallin In Love Again" by Franne Golde, "Isn't It Always Love" by Karla Bonoff, "I'll Just Die" by Ullanda McCullough, "Lovin Eyes" by Janis Siegel, "I Can't Let Go" by Kristle Murden, "The Rising Cost Of Love" by Elkie Brooks, and "The Story Of Love" by Valerie Carter. ✨✧ Erkin KorayElektronik Turkuler (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Turkofon/Pharaway Sounds (Spain), 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of Turkish psychedelia – and quite possibly the greatest album ever from Turkish psychedelic maestro Erkin Koray – a mad blend of sounds that definitely lives up to its "elektronik" title! Most numbers feature a weird blend of electric guitar and baglama – used in a style that's similar to Koray's earlier Arabesk recordings, but in ways that are often more tripped out and free-thinking – almost in a groove that's similar to late 60s blends of Eastern influences and progressive rock in the US and Europe – but even wilder and weirder throughout! There's a bit of vocals on the set, but the instrumentation dominates – and titles include "Sir", "Karli Daglar", "Cemalim", "Inat", "Hele Yar", "Turku", and "Korkulu Ruya". LP, Vinyl record album

El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great collection of work that sets the scene for the London Underground of the 60s – that heady cultural scene that was about to burst forth and shower the world with a huge range of new music that would influence listeners for decades to come! This package isn't that music – in that most of the artists here are American, mixed with contributions from a few key Brit talents too – and the whole thing works together to showcase the sorts of sounds that were a bit inspiration on the generation that would then inspire many others to come – a mad mix of modern jazz, electronic music, avant classical, groovy vocal, and even some compelling beat/poetry recordings too – all packaged together in an overstuffed 3CD set that makes for a hell of a journey in music! Artists include Ornette Coleman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Mingus, Daphne Oram, Modern Jazz Quartet, Aldous Huxley, Cecil Taylor, John Cage, Eric Dolphy, Annie Ross, Sun Ra, Gyorgy Ligeti, Allen Ginsberg, Jimmy Smith, Luciano Berio, John Coltrane, Chico Hamilton, Alexis Korner, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Albert Ayler, Joe Harriott, and many others. ✨✧ VariousYou Need This – A Journey Into Deep Jazz Vol 3 (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent collection of rare jazz grooves – the special kind of tracks that effortlessly mix up influences and styles, with a result that makes each and every number a real standout in the set! This is the third volume in the series, and the mix of music is wonderful – tunes from artists who are definitely jazz, and who have sophistication that goes way past familiar funky modes – into territory that's often far-reaching, and influenced by spiritual modes – even though all the tracks have a great little groove! There's plenty of fantastic modal moments in the collection, and although the core energy of the package comes from the 70s underground jazz scene, there's also some great bits from other periods too. Titles include "Nepal" by Bjorn Alkes Kvartette, "Probuzeni" by Jazz Celula "Dawn" by Sangram, "Manteca" by Phineas Newborn Jr, "Pan African Ballet Music" by Karlton Hester & The Contemporary Jazz Art Movement, "Hasta La Victra Siempra" by Copa Salvo, "Impressions" by Stafford James Ensemble, "Middle Passage" by Tyrone Jefferson, "Aladdin's Carpet" by Beaver Harris, and "24 Carat" by Gabor Szabo. ✨✧ DJ ShadowOutsider ... CD
Universal, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fascinating full length departure from DJ Shadow – an album that's more or less made up of genre suites – rolling from sound library groove, to hood-shaking hyphy hip hop, to topical post-Katrina commentary, to beat-driven live instrument avant funk! The album's flow is more or less held together with the occasional backing of the Heliocentrics – featuring drummer Malcolm Catto – as a tight rhythmic backdrop in a number of spots with heavy drums plus keys, vibes, bass and guitar. But even more tracks are buoyant bombs of deeply pulsing, heavily thumping contemporary hip hop. The album is ultimately kind of a mess, but it's a very ballsy one – featuring some of Shadow's most mainstream hip hop productions ever – which is actually in itself a pretty radical move when you think about it! Titles include "This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way)", "3 Freaks" feat Keak Da Sneak & Turf Talk, "Turf Dancing" feat The Federation & Animaniaks, "Keep Em Close" feat Nump, "Seein' Thangs" feat David Banner, "Broken Levee Blues", "Artifact (inst)", "Backstage Girl" feat Phonte Coleman, "Triplicate/Something Happened That Day", "The Tiger" feat Sergio Pizzorno & Christopher Karloff, "Erase You" feat Chris James, "What Have I Done" feat Christina Carter, "Enuff" feat Q-Tip & Lateef The Truth Speaker, "Dats My Part" feat E-40, "3 Freaks (Droop-E rmx)" feat Mistah FAB, Turf Talk & Keak Da Sneak and more. ✨✧ VariousBosporus Bridges – A Wide Selection Of Turkish Jazz & Funk 1968 to 1978 ... LP
Twimo/World Is My Oyster (Germany), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Heavy funk from 70s Turkey – proof that the world of the groove knew no boundaries at the time! The tunes here are all pretty heavily influenced by American funk and jazz of the period – awash in heavy beats, tight riffing, and wicked instrumentation that's often produced with a nice gritty edge that really matches the intensity of some of the best funky 45s! But the work also features a fair bit of Eastern influences as well – either in use of specific instruments, sounds, and phrasing – or the occasional Turkish vocals which really help freshen the groove. Side one is all funk – and very dirty, nasty, and with beats a lot heavier than you'd expect – and side two is jazz, but not your usual Anglo jazz from the time – and more in the world/jazz crossover style explored by labels like MPS! The whole thing's totally great – a record you'll proudly stack next to your best Mulatu albums, but which will take you even further! Titles include "Hilal" by Durul Gence 10, "Senlik" by Erol Peckan, "Cecen Kizi" by Emin Findikoglu, "Sevemek Istiyorum" by Erkut Tackin, "Karli Daglar" by Erkin Koray, "Aybatti (edit)" by Fikret Kizilok, "Dolana Dolana" by Mustafa Okzent Ve Orkestrasi, "Bermuda Seytan Ucgeni" by Aksu Orkestrasi, and "Kopruden Gecti Gelin" by Ferdi Ozbegen.
