Kan Mikami & Ryojiro FurusawaSyokugyo – Profession ... CD
Johnny's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $22.99
A pretty amazing record from a time when it seemed like all holds were off on the Japanese record industry – especially on smaller labels like Johnny's Disk, who recorded this album during a period of really intense creativity! The album begins with heavy drums from Ryojiro Furusawa – almost making it feel like you're about to hear a whole album of improvised music – but then Kan Mikami comes in with guitar and vocals, and the tunes get shaped in very different lyrical ways – but still while being driven by Ryojiro's very bold work on the drums! The whole album seems to swing between these solo, improvised moments and more song-based inspiration – and as with many of the true treasures on the Johnny's Disk label, you've really got to hear this one to appreciate its genius.
