Warner, 1991. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The soundtrack to John Singleton's landmark film that set the stage for so many films set in the inner city to come from the big Hollywood and indie studios – putting the city of Compton on the map for a lot of folks, and making Ice Cube a household name! What makes Boyz N The The Hood – the album stand the test of time so well as that it wasn't really a snapshot of the sounds of 1991, fairly diverse and far reaching even at the time. Includes Main Source's " Just A Friendly Game Of Baseball (Remix)", Ice Cube's "How To Survive In South Central", Compton's Most Wanted's "Growin Up In The Hood", KAM's "Every Single Weekend", Yo Yo "Mama Don't Take No Mess", and tracks from from Tone! Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsShaman ... CD
Strut (UK), 2020. Used ... $9.99
A tremendous return to form for reedman Idris Ackamoor and his Pyramids group – and a record that we love every bit as much as his classic material from the 70s! There's a power, righteousness, and urgency to this album that we haven't heard from Ackamoor in years – very much the kind of material that's both a message and a medicine for the planet – of the sort that first inspired Ackamoor's generation in the 70s – and which is rarely carried off in a contemporary context this well! Idris plays tenor, but also delivers some surprisingly wonderful vocals and a few very powerful spoken parts too – and the rest of the lineup features Margaux Simmons on flute, Bobby Cobb on guitar, Ruben Ramos Medina on bass, Jack Yglesies on percussion, Sandra Poindexter on viola and violin, and Giole Pagliaccia on drums. The vibe here is like the vintage Black Fire Records label at its best – and titles include "Salvation", "Theme For Cecil", "When Will I See You Again", "Shaman", "Tango Of Love", "Dogon Mysteries", and "The Last Slave Ship". Kamal Abdul Alim & The BrothersDance ... CD
Stash/Soul Brother (UK), 1988. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A really fantastic little record – a set that shows a strong evolution of spiritual jazz styles into the 80s! The set was recorded at a time when the jazz underground was really getting a lot of exposure, and was bursting forward with a new sense of hope – a quality that you can really feel in the music, right from the very first note – as these tunes are joyous, yet highly rhythmic and spiritual too – a vibe that's maybe a bit like Pharoah Sanders on Theresa Records, especially on his classic "You Got To Have Freedom"! Most tunes here are upbeat and modal – driven by the rhythms of Ron Burton on piano, Abdu Wali on guitar, Sabu Adeyla on bass, Idris Muhammad on drums, and Abdus Saboor on percussion – and soaring with solos from leader Kamal Abdul Alim on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Bobby Watson on alto and soprano. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Prayer", "Peace", "Al Nafs", "Dance", and "Brotherhood". CD

Kamau KenyattaStrong Men ... LP
Omni Arts, 1982. Near Mint- ... $6.99
An indie set from early 80s Detroit – one that features reedman Kamau Kenyatta in the lead, working with a lineup that has mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation! Kenyatta plays soprano and tenor sax, plus a bit of acoustic piano – and his tones are somewhat sharp-edged, but soulful – almost like that more famous Kenyatta, Robin, on his Atlantic records of the 70s. Players include William Evans on electric piano and organ, Tani Tabbal on drums, Sadir Bey on congas, and Todd Dikeman on guitar – and titles include "Asia Eyes", "Springtime Boulevard", "Wedding Song", "The Concubine", "For Lady Day", and "Griot De Janeiro". United Artists, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Deke Leonard's really finding himself as a solo artist here – so much so, he begins the album with an instrumental, then continues to push his strengths on that instrument every bit as much as his edgey vocals! As with his previous record, there's some great help here from old bandmates in Man – rock-solid rhythms that feature lots of strong work on bass from Martin Ace, whose strengths also really help keep things focused. Titles include "Cool Summer Rain", "Sharpened Claws", "In Search Of Sarah & Twenty Six Horses", "April The Third", and "The Black Gates Of Death". LP, Vinyl record album

Mari NakamotoMari ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $19.99 24.00
Mari Nakamoto is a jazz singer with a wonderful sense of tone – a musicality in her voice that comes through on the first few notes of the record, then continues throughout as she transforms familiar tunes with that special sort of magic that marks a rare breed of jazz vocalist! Nakamoto really understands the tunes, and clearly sees her voice as much as an instrument as just the conveyor of lyrics – very much in a Sarah Vaughan sort of school, although Mari's certainly got her own sense of phrasing too. Instrumentation includes lots of great touches that bring out the best in her voice – including vibes from Kazuhiro Matsushi, and guitar from Shoji Yokouchi – on titles that include "Love For Sale", "On A Clear Day", "Day By Day", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "No Moon At All". Mari Nakamoto & Shoji YokouchiLittle Girl Blue ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99
Warmly wonderful work from singer Mari Nakamoto – perfectly recorded in a warm Three Blind Mice manner that really suits her style! As with some of the other records on the label at the time, the vibe here is a bit laidback – but in a great way, which lets Mari slink forward in the lead, often with some nicely soulful currents – amidst guitar lines from Shoji Yokouchi, and some occasional organ from Yuri Tashiro – balanced out nicely with some lean work on bass and drums. Titles include a great take on "Bag's Groove" – plus "Song For You", "Black Coffee", "Dreamsville", "I Wanna Be Around", and "Good Morning Heartache" – all done in nicely laidback, open takes! CD

Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $19.99 24.00
A great tenor saxophonist from the Japanese scene of the 70s – heard here in one of his hippest settings ever! Seiichi Nakamura really knows how to stretch things out, yet still keep things interesting – working here with a strong sense of rhythm that's really augmented by the use of guitar in the group alongside piano, bass, and drums – and instrument handled by Kiyoshi Sugimoto with these wide flares that roll along beautifully and give the rhythm a strong sense of color – while Nakamura blows these brilliantly bold lines over the top! Most tracks push past the ten minute mark, and more are very creative originals by Nakamura too – with titles that include "Himalayas", "Adventure In My Dream", and "Too Beauty". CD

Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the most searing sessions on the rare Aketa's Disk label – a freewheeling trio date from saxophonist Kazumi Odagiri, who really stretches out on some long tracks with the sort of fire that Sonny Rollins was bringing to such a setting in the decade before! Odagiri blows tenor with this wonderful tone – and also handles a bit of soprano sax too – and the group features only the bass of Koichi Yamazaki and drums of Kenichi Kaneyama – who bow out at times to let Kazumi open up space with a solo, then come rolling in to help set the fire anew! Titles include great takes on the Freddie Hubbard tune "Intrepid Fox" – plus "Invitation", "Striped Slacks", and "When Sunny Gets Blue". CD

Bill Perkins & Richie KamucaTenors Head On ... CD
Pacific Jazz/Universal (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... $13.99 About November 25, 2021
A killer date from two of the hippest tenors of the west coast scene in the 50s – Bill Perkins and Richie Kamuca – both musicians who worked in the cool school, but could also come across with plenty of soul! The album's got both tenors working head on – hitting counterpoint modes at times, but also opening up more freely at others – showing the balance between composition, arrangement, and improvisation that made the scene so great at the time – yet executed with a bit more depth of feeling, as we'd expect from Perkins and Kaumca. Rhythm is from the trio of Pete Jolly on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and titles include "Spain", "Pick A Dilly", "Oh Look At Me Now", "Don't Be That Way", and "Blues For Two". A masterpiece of electronic work from Ryuichi Sakamoto – and a record that may well be reaching for the universal language promised in the title! The set's not nearly as pop-oriented as some of Sakamoto's other work from the time – mostly instrumental, and with a spirit that's like some of his best soundtrack material, and maybe a bit like some of the other minimalist work coming from Japan during the period – save for the fact that Sakamoto always brings in a bit more, and has some unusual sonic elements that lurk in the background and make for a nice amount of surprises! Two masters of the subtle side of the sonic spectrum come together here wonderfully – working in a live performance that shows their incredible ears for modes that are both tuneful, and which go beyond music – served up with a sense of maturity that shows why both artists have stayed vibrant over the decades! Sakamoto handles piano, small percussion, guitar, and electronics – and Toop plays lap steel, flute, bass recorder, and a variety of sounds on cassettes – including "bugs", which work in with the electronic elements in a really wonderful way! The sound is sublime – more interesting than just ambient, with all these interesting textures and sonic elements that slide in nicely from the background – given warmth at just the right moments from Sakamoto on piano. A really lovely soundtrack – with some great minimalist pieces by Ryuichi Sakamoto, which rival some of his best work on the Merry Christmas Lawrence soundtrack! The David Byrne tracks are surprisingly great, too – especially the main theme – and the whole thing is a great mix of period-styled sounds and moments that echo some of the hippest currents of the 80s! Side one features all material from Sakamoto – including "First Coronation", "Open The Door", "Rain", and "The Last Emperor Theme" in different variations. Side two features more great tracks from David Byrne – including "Main Title Theme", "Bed", "Picking A Bride", and "Wind Rain & Water" – plus "Lunch" by Cong Su, "Red Guard" by The Red Guard Accordion Band, and "The Red Guard Dance" by The Girls Red Guard Dancers. Throttle Elevator Music feat Kamasi WashingtonFinal Floor ... CD
Wide Hive, 2021. Used ... $5.99
We certainly hope this isn't the final floor for Throttle Elevator Music, as we've always enjoyed the many sounds the group has given us over the years – styles served up here on a record that's almost a testament to the collaborative growth of the ensemble over the past decade or so, as the album brings together recordings made over various years, with new work added in recently to complete the set! As usual, Gregory Howe is at the core – handling most of the arrangements and overseeing the recording, with equal help from longtime musical partner Matt Montgomery on bass – opening up into a lineup that also includes Kamasi Washington on tenor, Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Kasey Knudsen on alto and tenor, and Mike Blankenship on a bit of Farfisa organ! You can definitely feel Washington's presence when he's on a session, but the overall sound of the record is equally nice – a real evolution of the group's sound from the start, maybe served up in part by the more recent touches added to the mix by Howe. Titles include "Supraliminal Space", "Caste Off", "Daggerboard", "Ice Windows", "Rooftop Sunrise", "Return To Form", "Heart Of Hearing", and "Recirculate". CD

Throttle Elevator Music feat Kamasi WashingtonRetrorespective ... CD
Wide Hive, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Not a retrospective of the music of Throttle Elevator Music – as you might mistake from the title – but instead a fresh new album that features the group working tremendously with the mighty Kamasai Washington! Washington isn't just a guest, but a key member of the group – and he really helps to push forward that deepening sound they've developed since their first release – a huge evolution that only gets better when Kamasai's on board. Washington plays tenor on the record, and contributes songs and arrangements – and some of the vibe of the set is maybe a small combo take on territory he explored on The Epic album – proud and righteous, with a very uplifting spirit. Other group members include Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet, Ava Mendoza on guitar, Matt Mongtomery on bass and piano, and Thomas McCree on drums – and producer Gregory Howe also contributes songs and arrangements. Titles include "Flux & Solder", "Liminality", "Playing The Alleyway", "February Drift", "Subtract Limited", and "Rapid Rotation". CD

Kamasi WashingtonBecoming – Music From The Netflix Documentary ... CD
Young Turks, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Really great work from saxophone genius Kamasi Washington – music that's very different than the longform sounds of his epic sets – yet very beautiful too, and clearly showing off a whole new feather in Kamasi's mighty cap! As you can tell from the title, the work is music for a documentary soundtrack – and Washington really rises to the occasion with music of majesty – all jazz throughout, but mixed with some extra strings at times too – a bit like those fantastic instrumental moments that Bill Lee did for the early films of Spike – served up here with a similar sense of pride, power, and subtle righteousness! Other players include Rickey Washington on alto and flute, Ryan Porter on trombone, Dontae Winslow on trumpet, and Cameron Graves on piano and Fender Rhodes – on titles that include "Take In The Story", "Shot Out Of A Cannon", "Song For Fraser", "Southside V1", "Detail", "Fashion Now & Then", "Connections", "Looking Forward", and "I Am Becoming". Brainfeeder, 2015. Used 3 CDs ... $14.99
A modern day spiritual jazz treasure – completely wonderful all the way through, and a set you might well file proudly next to your classics from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders! The record's as epic as it promises in the title – a three volume journey in jazz, headed by tenorist Kamai Washington, who emerges here as a tremendous leader, a hell of a writer, and a rich jazz talent in every sense of the word – carefully steering a group of musicians through work that's searing, searching, and driven with a very cosmic vibe! Tunes are often modal, and never step too far outside, but always push the boundaries – and the instrumentation is a shifting mix of keyboards, piano, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums, and percussion – plus some vocal performances from Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn. You might know Kamasi from his work with Flying Lotus and Thundercat – the latter of whom plays bass on this set – but the album's very much his own, and very much jazz all the way through. The kind of record we're mighty proud to be offering – with tracks that include "Askim", "The Next Step", "Rhythm Changes", "Miss Understanding", "Leroy & Lanisha", "Re Run", "Seven Prayers", "Malcolm's Theme", and "The Message". Young Turks, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99
Pure fantasticness from the great Kamasi Washington – a set that's much more compact than his sprawling Epic, but which has an equally wonderful vibe overall! The album features material that Washington performed at the Whitney Biennial – to accompany paintings by his sister – but the whole thing stands alone beautifully, with that free-flowing, always spiritual vibe that's made Washington one of the strongest young jazz talents to emerge in recent years! The music resonates strongly with the work of some of his key LA contemporaries – like Ronald Bruner Jr, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Thundercat – all of whom perform in the large ensemble – helping Kamasi's tenor soar to the skies on waves of collaborative joy. Washington composed, arranged, and even produced the record himself – and in some ways, the tightness of the performance makes the whole thing even more satisfying than Epic – as we hope you feel too, on titles that include "Desire", "Humility", "Truth", "Integrity", "Knowledge", and "Perspective". Young Turks, 2018. New Copy 3 CDs ... $23.99 24.98
Truly tremendous work from saxophonist Kamasi Washington – a set that may well even blow away his groundbreaking Epic album – given the scope of soul and spirit in the music! As with the previous project, this one's double-length, but maybe feels even more fitted to the mode – as Washington leads this incredible ensemble that unifies a jazz group, orchestra, and choir – all at a level that might even top some of Alice Coltrane's early 70s albums for Impulse! There's a richness in vision here right from the start – music that knows what it is, where it's going, and what it can accomplish – very personal, but also very welcoming too – just the right sort of spirit to help get the nation back on track! Washington blows tenor throughout – and gets great help from Cameron Graves on piano, Brandon Coleman on organ and keyboards, and Miles Mosley on bass – whose work alone really seems to drive the proceedings! Titles include "Can You Hear Him", "Fists Of Fury", "Will You Sing", "Journey", "Street Fighter Mas", "The Space Travelers Lullaby", "The Psalmnist", "One Of One", and "The Invincible Youth". Comes with a bonus CD called The Choice – with the Kamasi-composed "The Secret Of Jinsonson", "Agents Of Multiverse" and "My Family", plus covers of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Ooh Child" – it's another 38 minutes of music hidden in the center of the cover! Comes with a bonus LP called The Choice – with the Kamasi-composed "The Secret Of Jinsonson", "Agents Of Multiverse" and "My Family", plus covers of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Ooh Child" – it's another 38 minutes of music hidden in the center of the cover! Black Focus, 2018. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
The first solo project from Kamaal Williams – and a wonderfully spiritual set that has the keyboardist really blowing us away with his talents! Williams plays plenty of Fender Rhodes on the set, mostly in a trio setting, but one that's far from standard jazz – as the rhythms often reflect his roots in hip hop, although played live by drummer Joshua McKenzie and bassist Pete Martin – who also have the ability to send Williams soaring to the skies with this magnificent spiritual energy! Consider this set to maybe be a Lonnie Liston Smith album for the hip hop generation – and praise Allah for Kamaal's mighty talents on the keys, and the sharp production skills of Henry Wu. Titles include "Salaam", "The Return", "High Roller", "Situations", "Rhythm Commission", "Catch The Loop", "Medina", and "LDN Shuffle". LP, Vinyl record album

Keyboardist Kamaal Williams is light years ahead of his first record here – and that's saying a lot, as that album was already pretty darn far-reaching! The music still has plenty of Fender Rhodes and keyboards, and other jazz elements that include tenor from Quinn Mason – but the overall sound is much more cosmic and complex, especially in the rhythms – which often seem to be responding to organic pulsations or magnetic shifts. Not that the album doesn't swing at points – because it definitely does – but as Kamaal states proudly in the notes, "you are now listening to and supporting an original movement from the London underground" – a comment that we couldn't have put better ourselves! The set also features great drums from Greg Paul, strings from Miguel Atwood Ferguson, harp from Alina Bzhezhinska, and a bit of vocals from Lauren Faith – on titles that include "Street Dreams", "Toulouse", "Big Rick", "Pigalle", "Early Prayer", "One More Time", "1989", and "Save Me". ✨✧ Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsAngel Fell ... LP
Strut (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Saxophonist Idris Ackamoor is a living jazz legend – but not the kind that's stale and stuffy, and instead a continuously vibrant player who's given us mindblowing music since his initial recordings with his Pyramids group in the 70s! This version of the Pyramids is different than that one, but they represent a continuing evolution of Ackamoor's rich spirit – his way of fusing spiritual jazz currents with global rhythmic inspirations – but all without every sounding as hokey as so many others who try for that space, and just fall flat! There's a sense of power and inspiration to Ackamoor's music that still moves us tremendously – and which, today, seems more urgent than ever – especially as Idris has seemed to set a new fire under his talents in the past decade or so, obviously more motivated by the need for social change than in his projects of more recent decades. The album's a mix of vocals and instrumentals – but the vocals are often more chant-like, or handled by the ensemble – at a level that further deepens the spirit of the sound. Titles include "Land Of Ra", "Papyrus", "Soliloquy For Michael Brown", "Message To My People", "An Angel Fell", "Tinoge", and "Warrior Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

LP, Vinyl record album

Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album from the Japanese fusion scene of the 70s – a killer set of tracks recorded by bassist Teruo Nakamura, with help from a host of American soul jazz luminaries! The album's easily one of Nakamura's most sought-after sets – and for good reason too, as the cuts are long and jamming, but also have a soulful component too – a bit of the post-Coltrane spiritualism of some of Gary Bartz's early albums, and some of the open-ended styles you might hear on a label like Strata East! Nakamura's a bassist from the Japanese scene – but the record was cut in New York with a great lineup of American heavyweights – including Hubert Eaves and George Cables on keyboards, Charles Sullivan on trumpet, and Steve Grossman on tenor – plus Alphonse Mouzon and Lenny White on drums. Singer Sandy Hewitt sings on 2 tracks – including the funky "Umma Be Me", which almost feels like an Andy Bey groover from the same time – and the cut "Understanding". Other instrumental tracks include "Some Other Blues", "Derrick's Dance", "Unicorn Lady", and "New Moon". CD

The manaical Chicagoan Mr. Tung Twista, who's contributed so much life to so many hits as the guest rhymer, cuts by Ludacris, P. Diddy and others is finally poised to have one of his own damn albums go platinum! Kamikaze features the hits "Slow Jamz" with Kanye West and "So Sexy" with R. Kelly plus "Pimp On" with Too $hort and 8 Ball, "Overnight Celebrity", "Higher" with Ludacris, "Hope" with Cee-Lo, "Sunshine" with Anthony Hamilton and more. In the past, it seemed like Twista tried a little too hard to transform his image into whatever particular mold was hot at the time, but on this album his tip-toeing from gangsta here, to big pimpin' there, to smooth and soulful here, to Pharoahe Monche style mania there actually works really well. It seems now like Twista's best talent all along may have been his versatility among all the different face plates of mainstream street hop. It works pretty well on this album, anyway! CD

Soaring piano lines, burning trumpet solos, and soulful tenor sax – all wrapped together beautifully in this obscure Japanese session from the 80s – a date that has all the free-thinking power and unbounded energy of some of our favorite American soul jazz sessions from a decade before! The group's led by bassist Shintaro Nakamura, but features wonderful contributions from trumpeter Shunzo Ohno, tenorist Robert Kenmotsu, and pianist Jeff Jenkins – all of whom get plenty of space to state their case on the album's long and stretched-out tracks. CD

A really great early album from Ryuichi Sakamoto – done during a time when his creative powers seemed to be non-stop, and he was always opening up new sonic territory with each new record! This set brings in some great guitar and "angry animals" from Adrian Belew – a factor that helped the record get some attention over on our side of the Atlantic – but the overall sound is very much in the legacy of Ryuichi's other albums – filled with plenty of electric percussion, keyboards, and other bits – on tunes that are always a bit off-kilter, but always tuneful – often using vocals and effects in ways that push way past conventional pop of the period – and equally comfortable with long instrumental moments too. Fiercely improvised work from the duo of Kaoru Abe on soprano and sopranino saxophone – and Sabu Toyozumi on drums and percussion! On "Song For Mithue Totozumi", the pair jump right into the fray – with Abe spinning out these incredible lines with effortless ease – taking his horn into the kind of territory we're used to hearing from European saxophonists, with superb support from Toyozumi! Toyozumi is wonderful on "Song For Sakamoto Kikuyo", in three parts – a piece that builds up with this organic, almost abstract energy from the percussion – very spacious in parts, but woven together beautifully by these snaking, yet angular lines from Abe's reeds – which gain intensity as the performance moves on, building to a real sense of ferocity by the end! Not the Chicago group of AACM fame, but a completely different Japanese combo from the 70s – a very cool outfit who are equally avant in their approach – and work together in a very spiritual blend of acoustic and electric sounds! The album features one long track, improvised in a very organic way – so that the spare sounds build up into these parts rich in meaning, but still with plenty of sharp edges – based on work from Yasuo Shimura on flute, amplified soprano sax, Arp, and radio; Renkichi Hayashi on guitar, ring modulator, and other effects; Nobuyoshi Ino on electric and acoustic bass, Turkish guitar, and tape recorder; Hiroshi Murakami on drums and percussion; and Yuji Imamura on amplified and acoustic tabla, plus other percussion. A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Monk's got plenty of angles, and plenty of stop/start elements – and Beasley recasts these nicely in ways that are sometimes almost funky, other times more like these soulful bursts of expression – using the horns of the large group in ways that are almost painterly at times – respecting the core inspiration of Monk's tunes, but also illustrating their meaning with other flights of sonic delight! RCA, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A classic double live set from David Bowie – recorded during his years as The Thin White Duke (as you might guess from the cover!), but featuring a fair bit of material from the Ziggy Stardust years! The music is pretty straightforward, and pretty rocking – lots of fuzzy guitar in the Diamond Dogs/Aladdin Sane mode – played by a group with Earl Slick on guitar and Michael Kamen on electric piano and moog. Titles include "Rebel Rebel", "1984", "Knock On Wood", "Here Today Gone Tomorrow", "Watch That Man", "Cracked Actor", "All The Young Dudes", "Width Of A Circle", "Jean Genie", "Rock N Roll Suicide", "Big Brother", and "Panic In Detroit". Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A wonderful debut from Gorden Campbell – an underground soul singer on the contemporary LA scene, and one who works here with some of the same collaborative power as the jazz musicians in the city in recent years! Gorden claims inspiration from Terrace Martin, who's on the set, in a lineup that also includes Kamasi Washington – but apart from the bigger names, the whole thing is really an overall effort from everyone involved – great musicians who help shift the vibe with each track, but keep things unified over the strong vocals and message-minded music that Campbell lays down – tunes that include "Too Many Lost", "One Mind", "6 In The Mornin", "Play Somethin", "Initiate", "Song In 6", "Wherever", and "Purify Me". KS Chithra with IlaiyaraajaKS Chithra with Ilaiyaraaja (UK pressing) ... CD
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 80s-Early 90s. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Sprightly, modernist Kollywood pop from the mid 80s – beautifully sung by KS Chithra, with the boundary-busting sounds and arrangements of Ilaiyaraaja! The songs are wonderful, time-honored regional pop sounds – traditionally-constructed songs blended with some 80s studio touches – loops, multi-tracking, drum machines, synths and electric keys – which all then fuse seamlessly with the haunting strings, percussion and achingly beautiful female vocals you'd expect from Kollywood – mixed with some madder, pulpy bits too! KS Chithra is as lovely of a vocalist as Asha Bhosle and other more internationally known singers, adding the warmth and depth of the songs collected here. We might even love this more than the earlier Ilaiyaraaja work Finders Keepers put together for the Solla Solla compilation – we didn't expect this to surpass it! Wonderful! Includes "Indha Vennila", "Yaaro Sonnaangalaam", "Vandadhe", "Oh My Love", "Pon Maaney", "Kankaliley", "Rathiri Thookkam", "Velli Kizhamai", "Oru Pooncholai", "Nethu Oruthara", "Hey Maina" and more. Jamael DeanBlack Space Tapes ... LP
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Spiritual sounds from the west coast underground – and a set that's maybe got a few more avant moments than other records of this kind! Jamael Dean plays piano in a shifting landscape of musicians – one that features percussion and production from the great Carlos Nino, some strings from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, alto from Devin Daniels, tenor and flute from Aaron Shaw, and drums from Tim Angulo. The tunes rise up in a bold spirit that's not afraid to step outside at some key moments, but also returns more to the cosmic flow of the tunes – maybe a bit like Alice Coltrane might get free at some points on her Impulse Records albums, but never lose sense of the message. The sound here is very different than just a straight Coltrane mode, though – as there are some keyboard moments, and a real shift in mood between each track on the set – especially when there are slight vocal contributions from Sharada Shashidar. Titles include "Akamara", "Adawa", "Kronos", "Olokun", and "Emi". LP, Vinyl record album

Swajola, 1984. New Copy ... $13.99 About October 15, 2021 (delayed)
A rare bit of indie jazz from the Bay Area scene of the 80s – but put together with a groove that's much more 70s overall! The group's headed by trumpeter Larry Douglas, and has a soaring, soulful groove that definitely owes a lot to the spiritual sound on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz – but which is also served up here with a confident style of its own – a mode that's brimming over with smart ideas and great intentions – especially on some of the numbers that feature a larger lineup! In addition to Douglas on trumpet, flugelhorn, and piano – the set also features Ronald Wilson on tenor and baritone sax, David Masucci on flute, Ray Williams on Fender Rhodes, Eric Vaughn on piano, Marcos Torres on timbales and percussion, and Kamau Seitu on drums and congas. The album's a real lost charmer – with a vibe that we'd liken to some of the best projects from Earl & Carl Grubbs at times – and titles include "Dedications (The Theme)", "Untitled", "Jammin' At The Boro'", "Illusions", "Traces", and "Dedications (The Variation)". Eternal Womb DeliriumEternal Womb Delirium #1 ... CD
Super Fuji Discs (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99
A pretty wild set of experimental work from mid 70s Japan – as you might guess from the name of the group! The lineup actually features a young Ryuichi Sakamoto on piano, but his work on that instrument is often overshadowed by the electronics and keyboards, and heavy guitar at some points – soaring out out with plenty of fierce fuzz and distortion when needed! Yet there's also a lot more going on here than just guitar and keyboards – as the tracks are all quite long, and go through lots of offbeat trippy changes that might be right at home with the Velvet Underground generation – not in a similar sound, but definitely in a similar spirit. All three long tracks are in Japanese – and the album's definitely a wild blend of psych, electronics, and other experimental modes. CD

A great set from Maynard Ferguson's "Dream Band " – a small orchestra that featured Herb Geller, Richie Kamuca, Mel Lewis, Paul Moer, and Nino Tempo – and which was a perfect vehicle for Ferguson's hard-swinging approach to jazz. There's some slight Kenton touches here – in the shift between larger ensemble tones and breakaway solos – and given the strength of some of the horn players in the group, the latter part are especially nice! A set that's maybe a bit more searing than earlier records from Cameron Graves – more full-on fusion at times, although still with some of the spacier elements we liked from before – yet definitely driven at points with the kind of energy that recalls the George Duke/Stanley Clarke experiments of the 70s! The rhythms at the core are really on fire – drums from Mike Mitchell and bass from Max Gerl – and the guitar of Colin Cook often matches the bold lines of Graves on piano and keyboards. Kamasi Washington guests on two tracks, Graves sings on one other cut – and titles include "Red", "Super Universes", "Sons Of Creation", "The Life Carriers", "Sacred Spheres", "Master Spirits", and "Eternal Paradise". Herbie HancockJazz To Funk (Blow Up Sessions/Kawaida) ... CD
Aim (Australia), 1966/1969. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 16.99
A pair of early sessions from Herbie Hancock – both very different than his Blue Note work of the 60s! The set features 11 tracks from material that Herbie recorded for the Warwick label earlier in the decade – material issued with a title makes it seem like the cuts are from Herbie's score to the film Blow Up – although we're guessing that they're not, although they've always been issued without much in the way of session details! That hardly matters, though – as Herbie is great on piano – younger and rawer, more soul jazz than modern – on titles that include "Smoochie", "Far Out", "Afro Boogie", "Rock Your Soul", "Jammin With Herbie", "Herbie's Blues", and "Night Walker". Next is a record that wasn't actually first issued under Herbie's name – a super-hip batch of spiritual jazz tracks by Albert Toodie Heath of the Heath Brothers – working here on a rare session as a leader, with a sound that's right up there with the Heath Brothers' early work for Strata East!! The lineup is incredible – as Heath is joined by players that include Don Cherry, Buster Williams, Mtume, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, and Ed Blackwell – all coming together for a session that's nearly lost to the history books, but which is one of the strongest spiritual jazz sessions of the late 60s! Herbie plays all acoustic piano throughout, and the tracks are long, leaping, and loping – with stretched-out spiritual solos from Jimmy Heath and Don Cherry – and a proud and righteous sound that's extremely free-spirited without going too far out! Titles include "Baraka", "Maulana", "Dunia", and "Kamili". CD

PJ Harvey, as much as any artist who has long-earned living legend status, has the kind of work worth cherishing in stages of development – and you probably don't need us to tell you that the Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea demos are much more than a mere companion piece to the album! While the main album itself isn't what we'd call elaborately produced, it has a big sound even in sparer moments, whereas the demos are a great showcase for her raw strength and huge voice – and the material his a different vibe all around in a lot of ways, making this a strong album of its own – and you get strains of her influences that get smoothed over on the album-proper. Wonderfully romping piano from Theo Hill – a musician who's clearly got some earlier soul jazz inspiration in his style, but who also knows how to warm things up with a bit of lyricism too – in a manner that reminds us of the direction that Cedar Walton took from the 60s into the 70s! Theo has a way of making complex ideas come across with a very natural pulse – and he gets great help here from trio members Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums – both players who share the same rolling spirit that Theo brings to his piano. Titles include the original track "The Phoenix", plus great takes on "Hey It's Me Your Talking To", "Finger Painting", "Blasphemy", "This Here", "Litha", and "Is That So". CD

Bill HolmanIn A Jazz Orbit ... CD
Andex/VSOP, 1958. Used ... $9.99
A wonderful showcase for the arranging talents of Bill Holman – one that steps off with a more straightforward and swinging style than some of his work of the time for the Stan Kenton group! Holman here is in a great mode that bridges the large group styles of the swing years and the changes in big band sounds that would take place in the 60s – and he's almost prefacing the style of the Clarke Boland Big Band by writing charts here that pack a real punch on the ensemble passages, yet which also rely very strongly on breakaway horn solos to tear up the tunes! The strength of the players is a key factor in the success of the album – as soloists include Frank Rosolino, Jack Sheldon, Herb Geller, Richie Kamuca, and Holman himself – on titles that include "Kissin Bug", "You Go To My Head", "Far Down Below", "Aura", "Theme & Variation #2", and "No Heat". Kama Sutra, 1967. Very Good+ ... $6.99
The only album from The Innocence – a cool little group with a really playful pop feel – one that's definitely cut from the same cloth as other Kama Sutra groups from the Lovin Spoonful generation! The core sounds here are from the duo of Pete Anders and Vinnie Poncia – who often use relatively spare instrumentation, almost as if they're building the tunes up from scratch in the studio, demo-style – while still layering some great vocals over the top. Jimmy Wisner did a good deal of the arrangements here, but he still preserves the personal feel of the songs – a kind of simple, joyful pop that almost reminds us of Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends on A&M! Titles include "All I Ask", "Someone Got Caught In My Eye", "There's Got To Be A Word", "I Don't Wanna Be Around You", "It's Not Gonna Take Too Long", "Whence I Make Thee Mine", and "A Lifetime Lovin You". An interesting concept record, with Konitz approaching a variety of material, much of it written by his collaborators, in wide open duet settings. Players include Jim Hall, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones and Richie Kamuca, and on each piece, both Konitz and his companion have loads of room to extrapolate on the base composition. Perhaps the highlight of the record is to be able to listen to Konitz wrap his warm tone around each piece, and then dance lightly around the melody. 8 numbers, including "Erb" with Jim Hall, "Checkerboard" with Dick Katz, and "You Don't Know What Love Is" with Joe Henderson. This 18 track CD features tunes from two of Mancuso's earliest (and only) albums as a leader – Introducing Gus Mancuso and Music From New Faces. The first set features Mancuso blowing hard in a group with Cal Tjader, Richie Kamuca, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi – and the second set features him working through titles from the show New Faces. Benjamin MorkMechanical Piano ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 29.90
There's nothing too mechanical about the sound of the piano here – although at some level, there's also some very interesting mechanics involved in the project! The music started out when Benjamin Mork bought an old grand piano that had been painted blue – and rather than try to completely restore it, he instead sonically deconstructed it – placing microphones around the instrument, both inside and out – to capture sounds that are still very piano-based, but also have all these other sonic possibilities too! The result is a record of surprising beauty – maybe a bit in the territory of some of the more spacious Bugge Wesseltoft recordings in recent years, especially those that effortlessly mix acoustic and electric elements. Titles include "Argentina", "Etter Vi For", "Attover", "I Et Oyeblikk", "Kjor Forsiktig", and a very nice take on the Ryuichi Sakamoto tune "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe the best work so far from Mr President – one of our favorite projects from the tireless French producer Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart! The set begins with a groove that would be right at home on some late 70s funky jazz playlist – kind of Roy Ayers or Kudu Records – then moves through a range of great cuts that really hold onto a vintage vibe, but with all the best sorts of underground modes that Bruno always brings to his work! Vocals shift from track to track – and include contributions from Hawa, Cindy Pooch, Celia Kameni, and Sabba MG – but the whole thing has a wonderfully unified vibe – warm, soulful, jazzy, and very very groovy.
