JJ Johnson & Kai WindingJay & Kai – Savoy Jazz ... CD
Savoy, Early 1950s. Used ... $6.99 8.99
Excellent early recordings from the team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding – the kind of sides that always remind us how great their twin trombone work could be! The album's lacking the cliches of later albums, and presents both players at their best – soulful and stripped down, grooving in a few different groups – with players who include Billy Bauer on guitar, Leo Parker on baritone, and Charles Mingus on bass. The album also features a solo track by each – and titles include "Coop", "The Major", "Lament", "Bernie's Tune", and "Blues For Trombones". CD

✨✧ JJ Johnson & Kai WindingStonebone ... LP
CTI/A&M, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
A truly fantastic record, and one that's become the stuff of legend over the years – a rare CTI album that was only ever issued in Japan – and which may well be one of the coolest sessions recorded during the A&M years of the label! Trombonists JJ Johnson and Kai Winding had recorded two other records for CTI during the period – both great – but this set has them stretching out in this really expansive mode that's completely unique – long tracks put together with complicated arrangements that really blow away anything else they ever did – funky, soulful, but also moving towards higher ideals too – a fantastic testament to the newfound arranging skills of Johnson, who handled most of the record. The group also features some amazing keyboard work from both Herbie Hancock and Bob James – who get plenty of room to roam – plus guitar from George Benson, bass from Ron Carter, and drums from Grady Tate – a superb lineup who really make the whole thing shine. The depth of this music is hard to describe in words, but the whole thing's wonderful – and the set features just four long tracks – "Dontcha Hear Me Callin To Ya", "Musings", "Mojo", and "Recollections". Kai WindingModern Country (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Verve, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 29.99
One of the grooviest albums recorded by trombonist Kai Winding in the 60s – a set that follows the larger ensemble mode he moved to after parting ways with trombonist JJ Johnson, yet one that also has some surprisingly groovy elements in the mix! The album was recorded in Nashville, and features the "modern country" promised in the title – as Kai takes on tunes from the Nashville songbook, with help from Bill McElhiney and Grady Martin on the larger charts – the latter of who also plays guitar on record, alongside Nashville legend Harold Bradley! There's some great use of organ at times, which really emphasizes a more soulful vibe in the music – and the Anita Kerr singers come in on a few tracks, with those wonderful harmonies that sound even better in a non-country setting than they do on their standard work for RCA. Titles include "Wolverton Mountain", "Busted", "I Really Don't Want To Know", "Detroit City", "I Walk The Line", "Dang Me", and "Slippin Around". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kai Winding & JJ JohnsonBrand New Swinging Together Again – The Great Kai & JJ ... LP
Impulse, Early 60s. Sealed Gatefold ... $14.99
The famous 50s team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding are reunited strongly here – after working alone for several years on their own projects! The groove here is a bit more open and less arranged than some of the pair's earlier projects – mostly just two trombones in the lead, soloing separately, with backing from a rhythm trio – split into two for each half of the album, with Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes handling side one; and Evans, Tommy Williams, and Art Taylor on side two. Tunes are short, but include deft demonstrations of the solo talents of each player – and titles include "Judy", "Alone Together", "Going, Going, Going", "Trixie", "This Could Be The Part Of Something", "Georgia On My Mind", "I Concentrate On You", and "Just For A Thrill". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram Waxtime EU pressing, still sealed with hype sticker.)

Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1955. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A cool quintet session from the great trombonists JJ Johnson and Kai Winding – one that really lets their twin horns soar free together – with only a bit of light backing to spur them on! The group's got a great rhythm section – with Dick Katz on piano, Al Harewood on drums, and either Milt Hinton or Wendell Marshall on bass – and the format is simple, but wonderful – as Kai and JJ step out tightly on the leads, then trade solo lines with effortless easy – almost in the way a jazz vocal harmony group might at the time! The pair recorded often together, but this set's still one of their greatest – and titles include "Stolen Bass", "Out Of This World", "Gong Rock", "Lope City", and "That's How I Feel About You". CD features a whopping 7 alternate takes of tracks on the album, too! CD

The complete 50s studio recordings of one of the greatest pairings in popular jazz of the time – the twin-trombone lead work of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, both players who'd come from differing backgrounds, but who created a wonderful new sound together! The pairing of the trombones on the work is wonderful – a strongly pronounced mini-horn section – yet one that's fluid enough to work at a nice boppish pace, especially when paired with players that include Charles Mingus, Billy Bauer, Paul Chambers, Dick Katz, and Milt Hinton. Miles DavisComplete Birth Of The Cool ... CD
Capitol, Late 40s. Used ... $1.99
Legendary early work from trumpeter Miles Davis – late 40s sessions for Capitol Records that are completely different than the bop material he was cutting with Charlie Parker and on his own! Instead, these sides have Miles working with a complex, more arranged style – built up with a young Gil Evans, in a mode that prefaces the later famous recordings the pair would make in the late 50s for Columbia. Here, the tracks are shorter, but beautifully blend bop ideas with fuller arrangements – and Davis blows alongside other key young modernists in a variety of larger groups – with work from Lee Konitz on alto, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding on trombones, Al Haig and John Lewis on piano, and Kenny Clarke and Max Roach on drums. Mulligan contributed plenty, too – his ideas on an overall sound definitely helped shape these sides – and the record's go on to legendary status – even though it's very different than most other Miles Davis from the time. Titles include "Godchild", "Jeru", "Move", "Venus De Milo", "Budo", and "Deception". This "complete" package follows up the core tracks with live material recorded at the Royal Roost, even before the original studio sessions – in a group that features Mike Zwerin on trombone with Konitz, Mulligan, Lewis, and Roach – plus a bit of vocals from Kenny Pacho Hagood. Titles include "Darn That Dream", "Moon Dreams", "S'Il Vou Plait", "Move", "Birth Of The Cool Theme", "Godchild", and "Budo". CD

The remaining 4 tracks feature Stan and Al Cohn, working in a 1952 session with George Wallington on piano and Kai Winding on trombone – on some nice light boppish tracks that have that sweet smooth Getz tone firmly in place. American trombonist Allen Hermann teams up here with Japanese trombonist Itsumi Komano – a player you might know from her work in the Bon Bones duo, and one who sounds nicely different here! The twin horn approach sometimes shows a lineage with JJ Johnson and Kai Winding in their small group records – tight leads, then very individual solos – but Hermann and Komano also have this way of crafting crisp colors of their own, by really finding a resonance between the horns in all these different ways that change up nicely from track to track. The rest of the group features Asami Yato on piano, Yutaka Yoshida on bass, and Yusuke Yaginuma on drums – and titles include "I Could Write A Book", "How Insensitive", "Early On", "Blues For A & I", "It Was A Beautiful Thing", and "Hear & Now". Savoy, 1946/1947/1949/1954. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A huge batch of work from the great JJ Johnson – material that includes 14 tracks recorded for Savoy as singles in the late 40s – plus the full Jay & Kai 10" album from 1954! The singles were all recorded in 1946, 1947, and 1949 – and they already mark Johnson as one of the most inventive trombonists of his generation – a player working with none of the hoke of earlier eras, and with a clean, modern sound that's almost like that of a bop trumpet at times. Players on these dates include Cecil Payne or Leo Parker on baritone sax, Bud Powell or Hank Jones on piano, Sonny Rollins on tenor, and Max Roach on drums – and titles include "Coppin The Bop", "Jay Jay", "Mad Bebop", "Jay Bird", "Boneology", "Down Vernon's Alley", "Riffette", "Yesterdays", "Audobahn", "Don't Blame Me", and "Goof Square", several with multiple takes. The remaining 8 tracks on the CD are from a 1954 10" album – titled Jay & Kai, with a lineup that's a bit different than the full Savoy album of that name. The core group here is quite unusual – as it features Johnson and Kai Winding as twin-trombone co-leaders, plus Charles Mingus on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums – with either Billy Bauer on guitar on 4 tracks, and Wally Cirillo on piano on 4 others. The use of guitar without piano is especially inventive, and really highlights the modern inflections of the two trombonists – and titles include "Blues For Trombones", "Lament", "The Major", "Reflections", "Coop", and "Blues In Twos". Columbia, 1955. Very Good+ ... $4.99
One of the greatest records ever from Frankie Laine – a strongly jazz-based session, and one that really makes incredible use of Laine's powerful voice! The group here is led by trumpeter Buck Clayton – who's also at a bit of a high point in his career, and able to give Laine this warm, swinging groove that's quite different from both the dramatic pop of his early years, and the western-themed numbers of later – a rock-solid backing from which Frankie can really take off and soar! We're huge fans of Laine's big hits, but we especially love him here – and the backings also feature trombones from JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, and tenor from Budd Johnson too. Titles include "You Can Depend On Me", "That Old Feeling", "If You Were Mine", "Sposin", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", and "Baby Baby All The Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1949/1952. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A classic Prestige LP that compiles earlier sides by the young tenor genius Stan Getz – four tunes from a 1949 session recorded under Stan Getz & His Four Brothers, with tenor work from Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore – all blowing with Getz in a real "brothers-like" sax section sound. The remaining 4 tracks feature Stan and Al Cohn, working in a 1952 session with George Wallington on piano and Kai Winding on trombone – on some nice light boppish tracks that have that sweet smooth Getz tone firmly in place. The album's got a great Don Martin cover, and titles include "Battleground", "Five Brothers", "Four & One Moore", "Red Door", and "Zoot Case". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBirth Of Bop – The Savoy 10 Inch LP Collection (5 x 10 inch LP set) ... LP
Savoy/Craft, Late 40s. New Copy 5 x 10 inch LP set ... Out Of Stock
A well-done package that celebrates the key contributions that Savoy Records made to the field of jazz on record – as the New Jersey company was one of the first to record the new wave of bebop in the late 40s, and quickly unleashed the music of Charlie Parker and his contemporaries on a host of famous 78rpm singles at the time! This set features many of those key 78 recordings, but focuses on their presentation in a series of 10" LP releases that Savoy did in the early 50s – vinyl packages that compiled the earlier shellac sides into a more durable format – and presented the key efforts that the label made in helping bebop get out of the clubs and onto the turntable! As with other Craft Records packages, the presentation is great – and really upgrades other reissues of the material with great sound, notes, and artwork that really live up to the contents within. 5LP set features all the original 10" LP sleeves, housed in a slipcase, alongside notes and photos – with classic material recorded under the leadership of Milt Jackson, Leo Parker, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, JJ Johnson, Charlie Parker, Kai Winding, Allen Eager, Budd Johnson, Fats Navarro, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Roy Porter, and Serge Chaloff! ✨✧ Gene KrupaGene Krupa Plays Gerry Mulligan Arrangements ... LP
Verve, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Gene Krupa and Gerry Mulligan – hardly a pairing that we would have thought of – but one that works surprisingly well here, and which showcases Mulligan's increasing fascination for larger group settings! The album features Gene on drums with a set of players that include Kai Winding, Urbie Green, Phil Woods, Hank Jones, and Barry Galbraith – but the real star of the set is Gerry, who's not playing here, but conducting the larger group of jazz players through charts that are all his own, and which display the same love of fluid ensemble horn parts that he used in his own smaller combo work. There's a lot more brass in the mix than you'd usually get from Gerry – which gives the album a bit more of a Krupa kick – and Gene also gets some nice space to show himself on drums. Titles include "Yardbird Suite", "Margie", "Bird House", "The Way Of All Flesh", "Disk Jockey Jump", "Birds Of A Feather", and "Mulligan Stew". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sylvia SymsSylvia Syms Sings (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early work from vocalist Sylvia Syms – all of it pretty darn great! The tracks here feature Sylvia in 2 different settings – one with larger arrangements from Johnny Richards, and soloists who include Kai Winding on trombone, Don Elliott on vibes, and Al Cohn on tenor – the other with smaller backing from the Barbara Carroll Trio, a nicely mellow combo with pianist Carroll providing some nicely sensitive colors. Both settings are great – and Syms steps out here without any of the hoke that we sometimes fear in her other records – in a mode that's quite personal, and very much in the spirit of her best contemporaries in 50s vocal jazz. Titles include "Paradise", "Comes Love", "Imagination", "Can't You Just See Yourself", "Love Walked In", "Lonely Woman", "Tea For Two", and "I Want A Little Boy". CD

MPS, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the best live jam sessions on MPS – a really freewheeling performance, filled with an assemblage of all star players! As the title indicates, the set was recorded live in Colorado in the early 70s – and all titles here are quite long, quite lively, and filled with great solo space – taken strong advantage of by some of the best players here, some of whom didn't get to record in this format much at the time. There's a mostly swing-based style going on here, but there's also a bit of bop as well, depending on the players on each track. Players work in various groupings, and artists include Carl Fontana, Kai Windingk, Urbie Green, and Trummy Young on trombone; Zoot Sims, James Moody, and Flip Phillips on tenor; Victor Feldman and Dick Hyman on piano; Budd Johnson on baritone and soprano sax; and Mousie Alexander and Alan Dawson on drums. Titles include "The Hymn", "On The Trail", "Just Squeeze Me", "Oleo", "Emily", "Undecided", and "Lover Come Back To Me". LP, Vinyl record album
