Philip Catherine with Marc MoulinStream ... LP
Warner/KTI (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99 40.00
One of the coolest records ever from guitarist Philip Catherine, and one of the funkiest too – thanks to a really sharp edge that you won't find on some of his other albums, and lots of Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin too! Some of Catherine's other records of the 70s were a bit laidback or noodly – but this set's got a strong, soulful drive all the way through – a nice focus that may well come from the production of Sacha Distel, himself a onetime guitarist! But the group's just got things right on the money, right from the start – with some very strong funky drums from Freddy Rotheir, plus trombone from Jiggs Wigham and both bass and flute from Freddy Deronde. Titles include "Bassline", "Let's Put It Like This", "Stream", "Foire", "Face", "Jeux Interdits", and "Memphis Talk". LP, Vinyl record album

ArktisArktis Tapes ... LP
Bonn-Bons (Germany), 1975. Near Mint- ... $24.99
The second album from this obscure German group – and one that definitely gets the title right, as the material here is pulled from recordings the band made on their own – woodshedding in the studio away from the mainstream! Despite their obscurity, Artkis has a sound that could have made them huge at the time – hard rock guitars with maybe an earlier blues rock inspiration, turned into much more ferocious territory – and a strong female lead singer who gives these guys a very unique vibe. The guitar work alone is worth the price of admission – and titles include "High Fly", "Pique Nique", "Dan 1", "Deep In", "New Rock", and "Small Talk". LP, Vinyl record album

Willem Breuker KollektiefA Paris/Summer Music ... CD
Marge (France), 1978. Used ... $9.99
A great Parisian recording from the legendary Willem Breuker – pulled from the most inventive years of his legendary group of Dutch avant musicians! The set captures the maestro at his best – working with a classic lineup of the Kollektief that includes Leo Cuypers on piano and vocals, Maarten Van Norden on saxes, Boy Raayamkers on trumpet, and some great drum work from Rob Verdurmen – all holding together beautifully with the offbeat mix of modern and traditional elements that Breuker used in his music. The sound of the album is surprisingly strong at times – especially on the straighter tracks, which groove along in a rhythmic mode, then break out for some solos that really go to town – and the whole thing's also handled with a fair degree of wit, as you'd expect from Breuker. Titles include "Condizione Niente", "Summer Music", "Wake Up", and "Parabasis". CD

Fou (France), 1980. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99
The great Willem Breuker at the height of his powers – delivering a searing performance here that really illustrates all that he was bringing to the Dutch jazz scene at the time! Breuker is amazing here – a reedman and arranger who's very well aware of all the freedoms allowed in jazz in the 70s – but also one of the few to also be able to fold them back into a more fully-arranged mode – not an improvising orchestra, but a compelling group of musicians who can come together through the strength of the arrangements, and set individual fires of their own! Other musicians include Boy Raayakers on trumpet, Willem Van Manen and Bernard Hunnekink on trombones, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Bob Driessen on alto and baritone, and Henk De Jong on piano – and Breuker himself plays clarinet, soprano sax, alto, and tenor. 2CD set features a huge amount of material – and titles include "Big Busy Band", "La Defense", "Tango Superior", "Flat Jungle", "Pale Fire", "Marche & Sax Solo With Vacuum Cleaner", "Bobbert", "Acro", and "Song Of Mandalay". A classic soundtrack from Indian film composer Rahul Dev Burman – and one that reminds us just how important the voice was to the format over the years! Unlike some Bollywood soundtracks, which have long upbeat songs that are driving the dance numbers in the film – this score has a fair bit of mellower tracks, which really seem to bring out the best of the famous singers in the music – a lineup that includes Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, and Kishore Kumar. Titles include "Dil Sajan Jalta Hai", "Pvar Hai Ik Nishan Qadmon Ka (part 1)", "Dance Music", "Lalla Lalla Lori Doodh Ki Katori", and "Suhani Chandni Raten". CD

Columbia, 1977. Very Good ... $7.99
Plenty of Natural Elements here – thanks to the Indian roots of the Shakti group! The group's a wonderful collaboration between guitarist John McLaughlin – often playing here on acoustic, far from his earlier fusion – and a trio of Indian musicians, including the great L Shankhar on violin! The sound is soaring, spacious, and makes almost a fusion-like use of some of the elements – but without nearly as many of the cliches as you might expect. The sound quality is excellent, and a further great aspect of the record – and titles include "Mind Ecology", "Face To Face", "The Daffodil & The Eagle", "Get Down & Sruti", and "Peace Of Mind". Long Hair (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A different combo than usual for the German scene of the early 70s – a group who were maybe a bit more straightforward than some of their Krautrock contemporaries – really working some great hard rock fuzz on their solos, alongside a female lead singer who's got a pretty bold style! This debut set was originally pressed by the band themselves, in a print run of only 300 copies – and got little play outside of the Bonn scene which they called their home. All these many years later, it's a lost hard rock nugget that really stands apart on its own – with tracks that include "Student's Idyll", "Outcasted", "Jeff The Fool", and the twenty minute "Rare Girl". Reissue also features bonus tracks – "Sky Drive", "Don't Hang Around", and "Is It Real". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic little record from the glory days of the Brain Records label in Germany – a set that's equal part rock and jazz – either fusion-tinged rock, or rock-tinged fusion – served up with all these really weird and wild touches that really send things over the top! There's no vocals at all on the record, and tracks nicely vary in length – really creating a strong sense of variety, and serving up the music with a nice sense of space, too – very different from more full-on jamming of a more progressive group, as these guys really like to just lie back into the groove and let things find their way! The set features some especially nice work on electric flute and saxes from Klaus Dapper – and titles include "Rambo Zambo", "Gageg", "Forsterlied", and "Baldrian". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AktionGroove The Funk ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title's no like – as these guys definitely groove, and they're definitely funky too – a sweet 70s combo from the Lagos scene, and one who play with a very sharp edge at their core! Aktion make nice use of darker, downturning chords – which creates a moody feel to their funk, and a vibe that's a bit in the territory of bigger-name acts like Cymande and Blo – and like the former, they've also got a great bassist, who makes for lots of dubby currents in the rhythms! Vocals are in English, but layered in this cool way with the organ lines and riffing guitars that dominate most of the instrumentation – on titles that include "Tell Me Baby", "Play With Me", "Groove The Funk", "I Don't Have To Cry", "Masquerade", and "I've Got To Hope For Tomorrow". Donald Byrd & The BlackbyrdsJazz Funk Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $26.99 30.99
An amazing tribute to some of the greatest jazz funk of the 70s – the groundbreaking work of trumpeter Donald Byrd, both as a solo act on his own, and as the inspiration for the mighty Blackbyrds group – both of whom are featured on this set! Byrd first broke into new territory in the early 70s with a string of amazing records on Blue Note – all done with help from genius producer Larry Mizell, who helped Byrd's trumpet find a way to groove in an electric space, but at a level that was very different (and a lot more soulful) than any sort of Miles Davis electric modes! This work quickly inspired a young group at Howard University, who chose the name Blackbyrds as a nod to Donald – who quickly became their mentor and producer, and helped them forge a great blend of jazz and funk before they took off on their own. This set features 39 tracks from both artists, illustrating a fantastic partnership and shared musical inspiration – with work from Byrd's Blue Note and Wea albums, and all the great Blackbyrds records for Fantasy in the 70s. Titles include Donald Byrd tracks "Dominoes", "Black Byrd", "Lansana's Priestess", "Wind Parade", "Flying High", "Thank You For Funking Up My Life", "Onward Til Morning", "Dance Band", "Science Funktion", "Dominoes", "Flight Time", "Witch Hunt", "Stepping Into Tomorrow", "Sexy Dancer (12" mix)", "Star Trippin (12" mix)", "Pretty Baby", "Giving It Up", and "Dancing In The Street". Blackbyrds cuts include "Blackbyrd's Theme", "Do It Fluid", "Flying High", "Cornbread", "Time Is Movin", "Happy Music", "Rock Creek Park", "Walkin In Rhythm", "Lookin Ahead", "Street Games", "Gut Level", "Party Land", and "Supernatural Feeling". JazzanovaOf All The Things (deluxe 3LP version – with pop up gatefold sleeve & download) ... LP
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2008. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 31.99
A tremendous step forward for Jazzanova – an album that's overflowing with classic soul touches, and done in a style we'd hardly have expected from the group a few years before! Jazzanova have always had an ear for older sounds in their music – which is something that first set them apart from the dancefloor pack – but this album's a really amazing achievement, and one that's put together with the solid sound of some lost late 60s sessions from Motown at points – or with some of the cooler sounds of European jazz of the 70s! There's still a 21st Century vibe to the music – a bit of crackle here and there that marks it as contemporary – but the backings also have tight orchestrations, occasional strings, and that perfectly put-together quality that still makes us marvel at old soul and jazz records after all these years. Vocals are sublime too – as the album features contributions from Phonte, Paul Randolph, Ben Westbeech, Jose James, Dwele, Bembe Segue, and Leon Ware – all of whom fit in perfectly, without any of the sort of random "vocals with sound system" feel you might get in another album of this type. Most tracks are co-written with the vocalist – which is an even hipper touch that ensures a depth of quality – and titles include "Gafiera", "Lucky Girl", "Little Bird", "I Can See", "Look What You're Doin To Me", "Let Me Show Ya", "Lie", and "So Far From Home" – plus a great cover of "Rockin You Eternally". 2019 Deluxe 3LP version comes with a full LP of previously unreleased instrumentals, too! Guerssen (Spain), 1971. New Copy ... $29.99 33.98
An incredible Turkish psych album from Baris Manco – totally riveting work that blends some traditional Turkish influences with the panoramic psychedelia of the late 60s & early 70s – all of which makes for lots of fuzzed out rock-funk, and a fantastic melodic sensibility! The most fascinating aspect of the album is its way of blending far out sounds from the East and the West – and the vocals are effectively melodic amidst the tuneful backings – with Turkish and Eastern accents, hand percussion and drums, and guitars that mix rock up nicely! This rare album had a troubled release history from the beginning, so it's all the more joyful to have it now – and titles include the great single "Daglar Daglar I", plus "Kirpiklerin Ok Ok Eyke", "Kagizman", "Kol Dugmerleri", "Derile", "Iste Hendek Iste Deve". Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
There's nothing too mechanical about the sound of the piano here – although at some level, there's also some very interesting mechanics involved in the project! The music started out when Benjamin Mork bought an old grand piano that had been painted blue – and rather than try to completely restore it, he instead sonically deconstructed it – placing microphones around the instrument, both inside and out – to capture sounds that are still very piano-based, but also have all these other sonic possibilities too! The result is a record of surprising beauty – maybe a bit in the territory of some of the more spacious Bugge Wesseltoft recordings in recent years, especially those that effortlessly mix acoustic and electric elements. Titles include "Argentina", "Etter Vi For", "Attover", "I Et Oyeblikk", "Kjor Forsiktig", and a very nice take on the Ryuichi Sakamoto tune "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence". CD

Reaktion (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $4.99 25.00
That's Brazilian jive, instead of Brazilian music – as the author here shows just how much the larger Brazilian culture helps shape the sound of it's songs – a wonderful interplay between urban and rural, modern and ancient, popular and intellectual – forces that have come together to make some of the greatest sounds on the planet of the past 50 years! The book's a nice change from some of the more monolithic looks at Brazilian music – which sometimes hang a bit more importance on individuals than the culture itself – and there's also a great deal of work on the language that goes into the songs, which can range from freeform poetry to more traditional chants. 232 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Cold wave completists, eat your heart out – because this incredible 4CD set is overflowing with early analogue electronic gems from the UK scene – served up in a really beautiful book-style package that's overflowing with notes to support the superb selection of tracks! The music here is definitely on the colder side of the spectrum – that initial impulse on the UK scene to rework some of the German electronics of the period with leaner modes, and take them into even more inventive territory during the post-punk years – before things got too commercial in UK pop, or too overburdened with industrial posturing! The music here is from those great early years of labels like Cherry Red, Rough Trade, and other key UK indies – and the package features 60 titles that include "Fractured Smile" by Inter City Static, "RAM" by The Klingons, "Computer Bank" by Five Times Of Dust, "Holiday Camp" by Blancmange, "I Am Your Shadow" by Colin Potter, "Joe Goes To New York" by Adrian Smith, "Sedation" by O Yuki Conjugate, "In The Room" by Third Door On The Left, "Eco Beat" by DC3, "What A Day" by Throbbing Gristle, "Western Vein" by Konstruktivist, "Music To Save The World By" by Alan Burnham, "Kodak Ghosts Run Amok" by Eyeless In Gaza, "New Muzak" by Instant Automatons, "Robot Dance" by Sea Of Wires, "Mzui (extract)" by Gilbert & Lewis, and "Muslin Gauze Muslim Prayer" by Muzlimgauze. A very cool record – and one with a sound that's as dreamy as the group's name – a laidback mix of vibes, saxes, piano, and percussion – all used in ways that are airy and open, and very different than most other underground jazz of the time! The group hail from New England, and there's maybe some of the inventiveness of Stark Reality in their style – even if the overall sound is much more acoustic, but still has a slightly fuzzy feel via the production! Tabansi/PMG (Austria), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Stormers are a group who rose from the ashes of the legendary Lagos funk combo Aktion – and they step out here with a really storming sound that definitely earns them their name! The groove is funk of the tightest form possible – especially for the start of the 80s – and the four piece combo seem to take all the best elements from the bigger American funk ensembles, then fuse them down to a wickedly sharp core – with basslines, guitar, and keyboards all working with an amazing edge – and none of the too-commercial elements that might have been showing up on the US scene at the time! Vocals are in English – which should have made this record a crossover international funk hit – and the whole thing can kick the ass of just about any early 80s funk album on the planet. Titles include "Sexy Woman", "Atlantic Breeze", "Be A Lover", "Super D Jay", and "Love Or Money". CD

✨✧ VariousNaya Beat Vol 1 – South Asian Dance & Electronic Music 1983 to 1992 ... LP
Naya Beat (France), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A nice dip into the more modern side of Indian music that emerged in the 80s – modes that would have been served up by larger studio orchestrations in years before, but which morphed a bit with some of the more contemporary club instrumentation and production of the time! Sheila Chandra is the biggest name on this set – one of the few artists here who got any sort of global exposure back in the day – and the set is a much deeper dig into territory that was cut off from most of the rest of us, at least if we didn't happen to shop at some of the import stores around the country – and the set mixes original recordings with a few reworks done for the set, which bring out all the best elements of the classics! Titles include Turbotito & Ragz reworks of the cuts "Masti Bhara Sam Hai" by Mangal, "Thottu Thottu Aadvaa" by Bappi Lahiri & Suresh, "Pi Pi" by Shakti, and "Kaga Bole Mera" by Arundhati Bhaumik – plus the cuts "Jungle Days" by Remo, "Hosh Nahin Hasi Ji Mujhe" by Musarrat, "Dosti" by Nazi Hasaan & Zoheb Hassan, "The Indian Dance" by Pinky Ann Rihal, "Saboko Maloom Hain Main Sharabi Nahin" by Babla & His Orchestra, "Chipko Chipko" by Asha Puthli, and "Ishkaan De Mamle" by Manjeet Kondal. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sons & Daughters Of LiteLet The Sun Shine In (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Luv N' Haight/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful material from this legendary Bay Area soul jazz combo! The Sons & Daughters of Lite have an incredibly spiritual sound – one that sounds sort of like the best groups on the Strata East label, with touches of Roy Ayers or James Mason-esque soulfulness, but with a little less polish. Many of the cuts have sweet female vocals in the lead – with backing that includes vibe, electric piano, tenor, alto, and percussion by Babatunde. The record's a great one if you dig spiritual jazz funk – along the lines of Gary Bartz, The Pharoahs, or Oneness Of Juju – the sort of spiritual, soulful combo that still really sends us to the heavens! Titles include the classic mellow groover "Let The Sun Shine In", plus "Fly Away", "Operation Feed Yourself", "Darkuman Junktion", and "Ju Ju's Door". CD
(Nice Japanese paper sleeve pressing!)
