✨✧ Synchro Rhythmic Eclectic LanguageLambi (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Moshe Naim/Sommor (Spain), 1976. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic jazz project from early 70s France – but one that also features a strong contribution from Chicago percussionist Steve McCall – best known for his work in the Air trio, and as part of the AACM! The music is a very freewheeling mix of jazz and global elements – with lots of percussion and drums from Steve McCall, saxes from the famous Joe Maka, keyboards from Saint Yves Dolphy, and guitar from Gerard Cubillon – plus occasional vocals from Gerard Philadelphe and Franck Valmont! The album's mostly instrumental overall, and many of the rhythms have echoes of styles from Guadeloupe – mixed with bolder jazz moments, all in a way that's one of those perfect French criss-crossings of cultures from the 70s. Titles include "Rigibo", "Lambi", "ABCD", and "Pasto". 2LP set features bonus tracks that have never been on vinyl – "KT 3", "El Gason", "Rete", and "Knell". LP, Vinyl record album

Bilal AbdurahmanEchoes Of Timbuktu & Beyond In Congo Square ... CD
Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Pete Brown & PibloktoThings May Come & Go – But The Art School Dance Goes On Forever/Thousands On A Raft (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Harvest/BGO (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Two fantastic albums from one of the most unique artists to record on the UK scene at the start of the 70s! First up is the long-titled Things May Come & Things May Go But The Art School Dance Goes On Forever – pure genius from the mind of Pete Brown – and a seminal slice of sound from the Harvest Records empire – a record that's every bit as messed up as you'd guess from the title – and we mean that in the best way possible! The album flies its freak flag high, but never in a messed up or sloppy way at all – as Brown wickedly weaves together all these jazzy currents with his own brash, bold lyricism – making the best of the amazing guitar skills of Jim Mullen, and keyboard work of Dave Thompson – who are definitely a cut above the usual jazz rockers of the period, and are able to match the drama of Pete's vocals, but also help him from never sounding too self-absorbed. They definitely don't make 'em like this anymore – as you'll hear on titles that include "High Flying Electric Bird", "Someone Like You", "Walk For Charity Run For Money", "Golden Country Kingdom", and "Firesong". Next is Thousands On A Raft – a record filled with long hair, jazzy riffing, and all the best hope that the early years of prog had to offer – all coming together on a record that's years ahead of its time! It's really hard to put a label on Pete Brown's sounds with Piblokto – music that's maybe more poetic than most of its contemporaries, but also has more of a bite, too – definitely that wit of Brown's that never dimmed at all, and instrumentation that's super-sharp, and super-smart – but never too full of itself to be overly indulgent. The songs are longer than on the previous Piblokto record, but in ways that only flesh out the ideas even more fully – on titles that include "Highland Song", "Aeroplane Head Woman", "Got A Letter From A Computer", "Thousands On A Raft", and "Station Song Platform Two". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – "High Sorrow", "Raining Pins & Needles", "Dawn Of A Night Wasp", "Aeroplane Head Woman (alt)", "My Last Band", "Broken Magic", "Flying Hero Sandwich", and "Can't Get Off The Planet". DaktarisSoul Explosion ... LP
Desco/Daptone, 1998. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 18.99
One of the greatest grooves from the legendary Desco Records years – a brilliant album of modern Afro Funk done by The Daktaris – in a groove that's just as hard-hitting as any of Fela's work from the 70s! The album was one of the first to bring back an older African style to current funk – and even years later, it's still one of the best examples of the sound – a razor-sharp session that helped set the stage for better-known Antibalas work to come! Percussion and guitar is super-heavy throughout – produced with that bare-bones Desco style, and handled in a way that makes you think the record might be some treasure from mid 70s Nigeria – a trick the label tried to pull when it was released! Cuts include a cover of Fela's "Upside Down", James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", and the originals "Super Afro-Beat", "Daktari Walk", "Voodoo Soul Stew", and "Quiet Man Is A Dead Man". Andrzej KorzynskiMowa Ptakow (plus Lektury Uzupelniajce & Kosmos) ... CD
GAD (Poland), 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A more recent soundtrack from Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski – put together for a film by the son of his old partner, director Andrzej Zulawski – and in a way that continues their cinematic legacy from previous years! The roots of the music like in older Korzynski recordings, but the songs are transformed a fair bit – often in ways that are very electronic and beat-heavy – with a sci-fi dance sort of vibe, and these tuneful passages that are a bit of a contrast to some of the composer's earlier work. Yet as always with Korzynski, nothing is ever too mainstream or commercial – and in a way, these shorter songs almost seem to answer a more popular idiom with a more personal vision. Titles include "Rower", "Dziewczyna Zla", "Smyzcki", "Opetanie Drugie", "Temat Etniczny II", and "Komputer". CD2 features 12 more bonus tracks – from a few decades of cinematic collaborations between Korzynski and Zulawski – then conclosed with 8 more tracks from the 2015 soundtrack to the film Kosmos. CD

Andrzej KorzynskiOrwo Years – Music From Movies By Celino Bleiweiss (Absage An Viktoria/Die Schwarze Muhle/Ich Will Nach Hause/Wilhelm Meisters Theatralische Sendung) ... CD
GAD (Poland), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $16.99
Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski has given us some great soundtracks over the years – including a few reissued by the legendary Finders Keepers – and here, Korzynski's catalog is further expanded by a host of soundtrack material done for German director Celino Bleiweiss! The music here was recorded at a time when Andrzej had returned to Poland, but still held onto all the musical discoveries he'd made in southern Europe – especially a great way of mixing electric elements with darker acoustic sounds – often swirling things together, so that it was a bit hard to tell which was which! A number of these tracks have a spacious keyboard sound with an undercurrent of gentle funk – a bit like some of our favorite early 70s sounds from French soundtrack composer Francois De Roubaix – while others are spookier and darker, and maybe more in the territory of the films reissued by Finders Keepers. CD features 31 tracks in all – music from the films Absage An Viktoria, Die Schwarze Muhle, Ich Will Nach Hause, and Wilhelm Meisters Theatralische Sendung. CD

✨✧ Johnny PateBucktown – Original Soundtrack ... LP
American International, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99 15.98
A funky treasure – finally unleashed! Bucktown was one of the best of the mid 70s indie blacksploitation films – thanks to some great starring work from Fred Williamson and Pam Grier – but for years, the soundtrack's never been available as an individual release. Now, this tasty heavy-vinyl set makes all the film's wonderful grooves finally available – presented in a great style that includes all the shorter moodier bits, the fuller longer funky tracks, and even a bit of sound effects and dialogue! The music was penned and conducted by Johnny Pate – of Shaft In Africa and Brother On The Run fame – and the tunes are a great blend of funky soundtrack styles that include full on big band, sparer snapping instrumentals, and even a few nice tunes with great use of moog! Titles include "Chase", "Stepping", "Bar Fly", "Check In", "Freeze", "Love Theme", "Call It In", "Sneaking It In", and "Spin". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderfully hard-to-categorize album from the start of the 80s – a Mexican record that mixes folkloric roots with electronic instrumentation – but all in a way that sounds much more ancient than you'd expect for the time! The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. Prestige, 1955. Near Mint- ... $14.99
If worktime was like this for us, you'd catch us showing up on the job early every day – but sadly, nothing at our office can match the brilliance of early Sonny Rollins here – a sharp-edged genius that perfectly illustrates why he was one of the greatest players on his horn for many decades running! There's a depth of tone on the record that rivals Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young – but a quickness of pace and imagination that shows a clear influence from Charlie Parker, and a deftness that few were bringing to the tenor at the time. The rhythm section here is super tight – and features Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all supporting Rollins' bold lead with lines that bristle with electricity, but still often fall back to let the sound of the tenor envelop the whole group. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "Paradox", and "It's All Right With Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Patrice RushenRemind Me – The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978 to 1984 ... CD
Elektra/Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Stunning work from the great second chapter of Patrice Rushen – the time when the lady moved over to Elektra Records and really opened up her groove! Rushen had already been making great music for most of the 70s – playing fantastic keyboards as a real up-and-coming star on the funky fusion scene of the west coast – but at Elektra, she also turned into a surprisingly strong singer – and mixed her voice with her keyboards in a really wonderful sound! This is mainstream soul of the hippest level – as the core of the cuts are almost always rooted in jazzy fusion, which also means that the vocals give way to sweet keyboard solos too – beautifully balanced in a way that show off all of the sweetest charms of the great Patrice Rushen – these qualities that really set her apart from most of her generation. This package is filled with really well-chosen cuts, and also includes some great single mixes and other versions too – titles that include "When I Found You", "Forget Me Nots (12" mix)", "Music Of The Earth", "Haven't You Heard (12" mix)", "Let's Sing A Song Of Love", "Feels So Real (12" mix)", "Settle For My Love", "Remind Me", "All We Need", "Never Gonna Give You Up (long version)", "Look up (long version)", "Number One (12" version)", "Where There Is Love", and "To Each His Own". One of the last great albums that Hank Mobley ever cut! Although Mobley's 70s output was nothing compared to his 60s Blue Note work, this 1972 session for Cobblestone/Muse is a winner, and features the aging tenorist co-leading a crack quintet with Cedar Walton, and featuring Billy Higgins, Sam Jones, and Charles Davis. The set's freer than Mobley's Blue Note work, but the group's right on the money – and the record is dominated by fierce soulful solos. Walton plays both acoustic and electric piano, at times, the record feels as if it might have been issued on the Black Jazz label. American greatness from this seminal Dutch ensemble – a set recorded in the US when the group were really hitting on all burners – linking together rich strains of modern jazz in the course of a single performance! There's a great blend of tight concepts and freer solos going on here – and reedman Breuker is still very might at his most inventive – playing with a rich, feeling sort of tone, and moving through lots of new ideas – and never falling into some of the easier or more gimmicky modes that might normally hamper a project like this. Other musicians include Andre Goudbeek on alto, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Andy Altenfelder and Boy Raaymakers on trumpet, and Bernard Hunnekink on trombone – and titles include "Women's Voting Rights", "Sylvia's Proposal", "Benares", "Kontrafunkt", "Song Of Mandalay", and "Amsterdam Rhapsody Overture". Elektra/Big Break (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great chapter in the career of trumpeter Donald Byrd – his post-Blue Note work with the group 125th Street NYC – which is kind of a second chapter to the jazzy fusion style he developed at the start of the 70s! This time around, there's an equal emphasis on soul and jazz – often with some strong vocals in the lead, but also plenty of room for Donald to stretch out and serve up the kind of perfect solos he worked out with the Mizell Brothers in the years before – modes that are continued here with some great guest help from singers and musicians who include Syreeta, Isaac Hayes, Jim Gilstrap, Wah Wah Watson, and Greg Phillinganes! If you like Donald Byrd albums like Places & Spaces or Stepping Into Tomorrow, you'll find that the sound here is a continuation of that mode – taken into the leaner funk territory that would come to play in the 80s. 2CD set features almost all the best tracks from those years, including some single mixes too – and titles include "Thank You For Funking Up My Life (12" disco version)", "Marilyn", "Butterfly", "Gold The Moon White The Sun", "Sexy Dancer", "Love Has Come Around", "Loving You", "Love For Sale", "Star Trippin", "I Love You", "Midnight", "Your Love Is My Ecstasy", "Have You Heard The News", "People Suppose To Be Free", "Morning", "I'm Coming Home", "Sunning In Your Love Shine", "Everyday", "Falling", "So Much In Love", and "Forbidden Love". Columbia, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
John McLaughlin's the only one pictured on the front cover, but the album's definitely still a highly-collaborative effort from the Shakti group – one that's awash in sounds and styles from Indian music! L Shankhar's violin is used almost as strongly as McLaughlin's guitar – with a soaring, spacious quality that's years ahead of its time – and which almost presages a decade's worth of music to come on countless jazz, soundtrack, and new age albums! But fortunately, the record's got a lot more depth than that latter genre – thanks to assorted percussion and Indian instrumentation – all used in ways that feel quite spontaneous, and almost improvised live – but never in a bombastic sort of way. Titles include "La Danse Du Bonheur", "Isis", "India", "Lady L", "Two Sisters", and "Kriti". CD

Plenty of Natural Elements here – thanks to the Indian roots of the Shakti group! The group's a wonderful collaboration between guitarist John McLaughlin – often playing here on acoustic, far from his earlier fusion – and a trio of Indian musicians, including the great L Shankhar on violin! The sound is soaring, spacious, and makes almost a fusion-like use of some of the elements – but without nearly as many of the cliches as you might expect. The sound quality is excellent, and a further great aspect of the record – and titles include "Mind Ecology", "Face To Face", "The Daffodil & The Eagle", "Get Down & Sruti", and "Peace Of Mind". CD

Steve Tibbetts, 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge collection of work from Steve Tibbetts – a guitarist who really helped open up the sound of ECM Records in the 70s, then kept on exploring music that was always at the fringes of jazz and other styles too! The package is put together by Steve himself, and features key moments from ECM and other labels, plus what might be some newer recordings too – although it's a bit hard to tell from the notes. What we can say, though, is that the 3CD set has a huge amount of music 49 tracks in all – divided up into three different modes! CD1 features Acoustibbetts – sounds from those early years, when Steve's first instrument was the acoustic guitar, mixed with other elements on kalimba and piano, inflected with a larger sense of space on percussion and a bit of bass. CD2 features Elektrobitts – from a time when Steve was using some electronic instrumentation with the same open ear he brought to acoustic guitar – and mixing things with just the right organic elements on percussion, bass, and a bit of voice from Claudia Schmidt. CD3 moves into farther global territory as Exotibbetts – evoking both ECM and 4AD styles of space and sound, mixing instrumental passages with some more exotic elements – but always with that understated sonic quality that Steve brings to his music. PMG (Austria), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title's no like – as these guys definitely groove, and they're definitely funky too – a sweet 70s combo from the Lagos scene, and one who play with a very sharp edge at their core! Aktion make nice use of darker, downturning chords – which creates a moody feel to their funk, and a vibe that's a bit in the territory of bigger-name acts like Cymande and Blo – and like the former, they've also got a great bassist, who makes for lots of dubby currents in the rhythms! Vocals are in English, but layered in this cool way with the organ lines and riffing guitars that dominate most of the instrumentation – on titles that include "Tell Me Baby", "Play With Me", "Groove The Funk", "I Don't Have To Cry", "Masquerade", and "I've Got To Hope For Tomorrow". Karl (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Konstrukt are a pretty great group on their own – a quartet of Turkish improvisers who have some really dynamic energy – but this time around, they also add the tremendous talents of Ken Vandermark to their sound, which really knocks that record out of the park! The tracks are full of improvisation, but also have a strong rhythmic core – work from Berkan Tilavel on drums, Apostolos Sideris on bass, and Umut Caglar on guitar, guimbri, and gralla – really pulsating together as Caglar breaks free for solo moments alongside Kohran Futaci, who mostly blows alto sax, but also adds in a few live effects. Vandermark is on tenor and clarinet, and really a powerhouse throughout – on titles that include "Diggin That Harmolody", "Ex-cess", "Bammm", "Cocoon", "East Of West West Of East", and "Semazen". Dark tales from the Midwest – mostly 18th and 19th stories from a variety of sources – including sailor shanties, slave spirituals, and the folklore of Native Americans – all presented here in a relatively easy to read format, with a few illustrations. Smooth jazzy fusion from Lee Ritenour – a classic set that was originally only released in Japan, part of the underground Japanese Fusion movement of the late 70s, famous for groove hounds for that added level of soul that often wasn't showing up in American releases at the time! The album was recorded in both Rio and LA – with work by a mixture of Brazilian and American fusion players, including Chico Batera, Oscar Castro Neves, Alex Acuna, Don Grusin, Dave Grusin, Steve Forman, and Marcus Miller. ✨✧ Tom RushComplete Elektra Recordings (Tom Rush/Take A Little Walk With Me/Circle Game – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of early albums from Tom Rush – all together in a single set! First up is the really great debut album from Tom Rush – a sometimes-overlooked singer/songwriter from the Bob Dylan generation – and one who definitely deserves a rediscovery all these many years later! Tom's a great songwriter, and takes off here in a rootsy blend of folk and acoustic blues – backed by lots of great guitar work of his own, plus some spare guest contributions – including occasional harmonica from John Sebastian! Rush is one of those rare breed who handles his music completely without self-consciousness or cliched adherence to his roots – a performance that we'd put right up there with Fred Neill on his legendary Capitol albums, or maybe the bluesier side of Tim Hardin. Titles include "If Your Man Gets Busted", "Poor Man", "Black Mountain Blues", "When She Wants Good Lovin", "Windy Bill", "Panama Limited", and "The Cuckoo". On Take A Little Walk With Me, Tom Rush picks up a bit of an electric edge, but still keeps all the songs and styles very much in the territory that made his debut so great! Al Kooper wrote the liner notes, and also plays electric guitar on all of side one – but the instrument is used in ways that just seem to underscore all the rhythmic changes of Tom's acoustic guitar, and echo some of the shifted rhythms that make the music sparkle. Tunes include originals by Rush and Eric Von Schmidt, plus some bluesy covers too – and titles include "Galveston Flood", "Sugar Babe", "Joshua Gone Barbados", "On The Road Again", "Money Honey", "Who Do You Love", and "Statesboro Blues". Last up is the classic The Circle Game – one of the best-remembered albums from the great Tom Rush – a set that gave the world his well-recorded title track (and the classic "No Regrets"), and which also has Tom really reaching out with a proud new style! The record expands the core sound of Rush in ways that roughly echo some of the early Tim Hardin material at Verve – still bluesy folk at the core, but with arrangements that are slight, but sophisticated – in ways that unlock all these great moods and colors in the songs that you never would have gotten if Rush were just singing and playing guitar on his own! Paul Harris handles the charts, and things are light, but well-pointed – a really beautiful inflection of the vocals and guitar at the core of the performance, often with a very moody style. Titles include "The Circle Game", "Rockport Sunday", "No Regrets", "Tin Angel", "Urge For Going", "Something In The Way She Moves", and "Shadow Dream Song". 2CD set features bonus tracks too – "I'm In Love Again", "Urge For Going (single)", "Coda", "Circle Game (take one)", and "Something In The Way She Moves (single)". Elektra/Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ ShaktiShakti With John McLaughlin ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great post-Mahavishnu work from guitarist John McLaughlin – the debut of his excellent Shakti combo, a group who mixed Indian music with some tighter fusion moments! The style here is a lot leaner than some of McLaughlin's previous experiments – a small group lineup with violin from L Shankar, plus tabla, percussion, ghantam, mridangam, and John's guitar – all used together in really wonderful ways. The Indian roots of the music are often quite strong, and McLaughlin plays a fair bit of acoustic guitar in a respectful way that never intrudes too much on the other players – a huge change from his jamming fusion of the early 70s. The album features 3 long tracks – "Joy", "Lotus Feet", and "What Need Have I For This". LP, Vinyl record album

A killer trio from 70s Poland – one who are very heavy on Hammond, and play with a sweet funky feel! The group mostly played live – both in Poland and Sweden – and also did some soundtrack work as well – but this is really the first-ever commercial release of their music as an album – a much-needed look at this really rare slice of Eastern European grooves! Unlike most of their contemporaries on that side of the Iron Curtain, these guys never jam too much, nor ever get to fusiony – and instead clearly draw inspiration from the best soul jazz combos of the 60s, plus the work of soul instrumental groups like The Meters or Bar-Kays – especially in the way they keep things tight, rhythmic, and right on the money. Instrumentation features lots of Hammond, plus bass and drums – and a few points feature some added congas or Fender Rhodes as well. Titles include "Naya Naya", "Ping Pong", "Jasiek Bala", "Punkt Styku", "Taniec Diablow", and "Eja Nalej". CD

Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
A totally great look at the explosion of electronic sounds in German music during the 70s – a set that goes way past more familiar Krautrock territory, to bring together elements from the artier side of the spectrum too, and even run up to some of the first great moments of the German new wave! Soul Jazz have been down this path before, but this time they're maybe following the road a little farther – as the track selection is especially great, and has a way of really illuminating the special sound of this generation, even if you already know some of the music! There's a few more meditative moments than on previous volumes, mixed with some tuneful tracks, funky numbers, and even a few subtle rockers – all laid out in a way that really makes the songs sound great together as a whole. The great Willem Breuker at the height of his powers – delivering a searing performance here that really illustrates all that he was bringing to the Dutch jazz scene at the time! Breuker is amazing here – a reedman and arranger who's very well aware of all the freedoms allowed in jazz in the 70s – but also one of the few to also be able to fold them back into a more fully-arranged mode – not an improvising orchestra, but a compelling group of musicians who can come together through the strength of the arrangements, and set individual fires of their own! Other musicians include Boy Raayakers on trumpet, Willem Van Manen and Bernard Hunnekink on trombones, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Bob Driessen on alto and baritone, and Henk De Jong on piano – and Breuker himself plays clarinet, soprano sax, alto, and tenor. 2CD set features a huge amount of material – and titles include "Big Busy Band", "La Defense", "Tango Superior", "Flat Jungle", "Pale Fire", "Marche & Sax Solo With Vacuum Cleaner", "Bobbert", "Acro", and "Song Of Mandalay". ✨✧ Mick HoughtonBecoming Elektra – The True Story Of Jac Holzman's Visionary Record Label ... Book
Jawbone, 2010. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully detailed story of one of the coolest record labels ever – a book that really gets at the huge range of folk, blues, psych, and other wonderful sounds issued by Elektra Records! The tome is massive – big enough to feature a lot of full color pictures, but with a much stronger emphasis on text than usual for this sort of volume – with an especially deep look into the early days of Zac Holzman, and his initial love of pre-rock modes before the bigger shift to more popular Elektra modes of the late 60s. The book is over 300 pages, and is past the halfway mark before The Doors even come into the picture – which really gives you an idea of the kind of detail involved, The book also features a full Elektra discography in the back – at least until the point at which Holzman left the label – and the whole thing's honestly one of the best accounts of a label's formation we've ever read. 304 pages, oversized, with some color images. A beautiful little record, and one that seems to take all the African-inspired elements in the music of Randy Weston – and push them even farther than Randy did on his own recordings of the 60s and 70s! The group's headed up by Cheikh Tidiane Seck, not to be confused with Weston's contemporary on the French scene of years back – Chiekh Tidian Fall – and Seck is a great pianist whose talents are spread equally between Fender Rhodes, moog, Hammond, and acoustic piano – in a lineup that also has Yizih Yode on tenor, Mohamed Hafsi on bass, Marque Gilmore on drums, and Adama Dembele on percussion! The rhythms explode beautifully, and differently on each new track – and the album's a perfect fusion of rootsy rhythms and jazz – served up with help from Manu Dibango on one track, and Abd Al Malik on another. Titles include both acoustic piano and Rhodes readings of "Ganawa (Blue Moses)" – plus "African Cookbook", "In Memory Of", "Tanja", "Niger Mambo", and "Timbuktu" – plus the Seck original "Mr Randy". The fantastic first full length set from Vicktor Taiwo – an artist who may well redefine the sound of electro soul for the 21st Century! Vicktor's got a voice that would be wonderful in a standard setting – inflected with his Nigerian roots, and clear love of American soul music – but he also gives himself a very unconventional backdrop for his music – using these beautiful bursts of electronic elements that sparkle and blossom in very unusual ways, as well as song structures that are equally unique, and which only heighten the very personal approach of his music! The whole album is completely without referent – almost like the recent genius from Benjamin Clementine, but in a completely different way – and titles include "Breathe In", "Showers", "Shimmers In The Sun", "Summon", "Morning Joy", "All Within", "Spectrom", and "Supernatural Women". Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

This great little ep features five nice cuts that Amon produced in collabortation with like-minded beatheads Kid Koala, Bonobo, Steinski, and P-Love! The first untitled track with Kid Koala is the real keeper – a languid, hypnotic groover that plays like some of the trippier cuts of the last wave of trip hop a few years back. The other tracks range from tight, electric beat clappers to more of an electro soul beat kinda sound. Tracks include "I'll Have The Waldorf Salad", "Hot Korean Moms", Ten Piece Metric Wrench Set", and "Ownage". If those aren't enough incentive, "Verbal", one of the better electronic pulse-pounding groovers from Amon's Out Of Nowhere LP gets five exclusive remix treatments by Prefuse 73, Topo Gigio and others – plus the Quicktime video for the track, with great 80s style futureworld animation! A big breakthrough for Philip Bailey – and a record that was kind of a second-level explosion for the Earth Wind & Fire sound in the 80s! There's a definite crossover feel to the record – a style that takes Bailey's soulful vocals, and mixes them with lots of catchy hooks – in ways that push the Kalimba aesthetic even more into mainstream modes. Yet the album's still got some solid soul grounding, too – thanks to arrangements by Tom Tom and Arif Mardin – which is a nice contrast to the production by Phil Collins, who also guests on the hit "Easy Lover". From the female singer in the obscure group Chapter 8, Anita went onto become one of the biggest selling soul music acts during the 80s – and this album's her first effort as a solo act. The record's a smooth sophisticated batch of soul tunes, with lots of nice jazzy touches, and a classy sound that was quite refreshing in the face of some of the overly-synthesized soul work of the time. Patrick Moten produced and wrote most of the cuts – but it's Anita's deep vocals that make the record work so well. The last true classic from the masters of the 80s groove genre – a post-Capitol effort for Elektra, but one that's still awash in great keyboards and snapping electro beats! Some of the jazzier sound from the past is gone here, but in its place is a leaner, cleaner sound that's still a fair bit more compelling than most work by the group's contemporaries! Nearly all tracks snap along with rhythms that are nicely placed between the street and the dancefloor – never gimmicky and never too cloying, and tightly focused enough to make the most of the hooks in the vocals. Lots of DX7 on the album, and more than a few numbers have a great sort of breakdance vibe. First up is a self-titled set from 1976 – Dee Dee Bridgewater's first album as a soul singer – recorded a few years after she first broke on the scene as a righteous jazz vocalist on hip early 70s classics! The sound here is different than the material Bridgewater started with, but still plenty great from a soul perspective – tightly-crafted, sophisticated work that features both uptempo and mellow cuts – in a mode that's quite similar to the Columbia work of Marlena Shaw – another former jazz vocalist who made a 70s shift to soul. Production is by Gene Page, Jerry Wexler, and Stephen Scheaffer – and the set was recorded in a variety of different setting that spin out over the course of the tracks. We're most partial to the mellow cuts – which trip along with some great spacey edges – and titles include a great version of "He's Gone", plus "My Prayer", "You Saved Me", "Goin Through The Motions", "It Ain't Easy", and "Every Man Wants Another Man's Woman". Just Family is a sweet funky fusion album that Dee Dee recorded for Elektra in the late 70s. The set was produced by Stanley Clarke, and has a soul/fusion sound that's not that different than his own work of the time, and which works very well with Dee Dee's sweet vocal approach. Players include Bobby Lyle, Ronnie Foster, George Duke, and other strong 70s fusion players – and overall, the record's probably Dee Dee's best non straight jazz album of the 70s. Tracks include "Sweet Rain", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Just Family", "Melody Maker", and "Children Are The Spirit (Of The World)". Bad For Me is one of Dee Dee Bridgewater's standout sets as a soul singer in the 70s – a mode that's quite different than the sound of Bridgewater you may know from her mostly-jazz career – but one that gets plenty of sharp help from the great George Duke! Duke produced the set – and really knows how to balance Dee Dee's jazz roots with some of the modern soul impulses of the set – letting her really soar on some mellower moments, while hewing to the groove on the more upbeat cuts – which may well be some of the strongest on the album. Throughout it all, Bridgewater is a model of care and class – very different than most mainstream R&B singers of the time – and titles include "Streetsinger", "For the Girls", "Love Won't Let Me Go", "Back Of Your Mind", and "Is This What The Feeling Gets". Last up is the second self-titled Dee Dee Bridgewater album, from 1980 – recorded during a brief break from jazz at the end of the 70s, and done with some sweetly grooving from Thom Bell! The sound here's a bit like that of some of the later Philly International work from the same stretch – a maturing style that still has a bit of the earlier groove in place, yet which also takes on a more sophisticated approach, especially on the mellower cuts and ballads. In a way, the format's a bit like that used for Jean Carn or Phyllis Hyman at the time – and like those singers, Dee Dee seems to work best here when she's got a nice gentle groove to bring out the jazzier inflections in her voice! Titles include "When You're In Love", "That's The Way Love Should Feel", "Give In To Love", "Lonely Disco Dancer", "One In A Million Guy", and "Jody (Whoever You Are)". CD

✨✧ Tim BuckleyGoodbye & Hello ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99
Easily one of our favorite albums by Tim Buckley – and a record that really opens up with some key jazzy touches! Buckley's still got his roots in folk here, and his vocals are yet to hit the extremes of Starsailor or Lorca – but there's also a new sense of inflection to the way he puts over the lyrics, shaded in by use of vibes, kalimba, harmonium, and harpsichord – the latter two of which are played on the session by Don Randi! Tracks are relatively short, but high in concept – and include the protest song "No Man Can Find The War", plus "Hallucinations", "Phantasmagoria In Two", "Carnival Song", "Pleasant Street", "Morning Glory", and "Goodbye & Hello". Tim BuckleyHappy Sad ... LP
Elektra, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $44.99
One of Tim Buckley's greatest albums ever – thanks to some incredible work by Dave Friedman on vibes! Friedman's sound really brings out the jazziness in Buckley's writing and phrasing – making for a beautiful blend with the album's 12 string guitar work and acoustic percussion – and giving the album a feel that's unlike any other from the time! Tim's in top form here, and is neither too emotional nor too full of himself. Nearly every cut's a gem, but our faves are "Strange Feelin" "Gypsy Woman", and "Love from Room 109 at the Islander". Tim BuckleySefronia ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A great later album from Tim Buckley – one that really shows him evolving his style in the last few years before his tragic early departure from this planet! Tim's working in a style here that's oddly heavier and with more bluesy overtones than some of his classic 60s albums for Elektra – almost reaching for a stronger style that competes with other singer-songwriters who were beating his action at the time! We're not saying that the album's slick or overly commercial – just recorded with a fuller sound, and less of the light jazz-tinged folk styles used in earlier years. A few of the tunes are done in the older Buckley mode, but others have strings, backing vocals, and other larger arrangements. Titles include "Quicksand", "I Know I'd Recognize Your Face", "Martha", "Peanut Man", "Dolphins", "Honey Man", "Because Of You", and "Sefronia – The King's Chain". LP, Vinyl record album

Budos BandBudos Band ... CD
Daptone, 2005. Used ... $7.99
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do". CD

✨✧ Paul Butterfield Blues BandPaul Butterfield Blues Band ... LP
Elektra, 1965. Very Good ... $14.99
An archetypal album from the legendary Paul Butterfield – and a set that would shape the sound of countless blues rock records to come! Despite what you might think of the genre or its many later incarnations, there's a raw power here that's really amazing – the young Butterfield and his Chicago comperes, hanging out at clubs on the south side, drinking in the relatively new electric sound of the city, and turning out a groove that's a lot more hard-edged than some of the overseas imitators at the time! Paul's pretty darn great on vocals and harmonica – but the group has some even more powerful sounds in the twin guitar talents of Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop – the former on slide, the latter on rhythm – along with Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums, and Mark Naftalin on some Hammond too. Titles include "Blues With A Feeling", "Born In Chicago", "Shake Your Money Maker", "Mystery Train", "Screamin", "Last Night", and "Look Over Yonders Wall". LP, Vinyl record album

Donald ByrdDonald Byrd & 125th Street, NYC ... CD
Elektra (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $6.99
Smoking work from Donald Byrd – post-Blue Note, post-Larry Mizell, and with a modern funk groove that's still pretty darn tasty! Not one to rest on his laurels – which he could have easily done with endless Mizell-based recordings – Donald shifts his groove here towards more of a boogie-styled 80s approach – one that's got the same sort of loping funk that was showing up in the work of Tom Browne and some of the younger players on the scene at the time. There's a fuller, richer, more soul-based approach to the set – but still some strands of the Mizell years – especially in the album's great keyboard work by Clare Fischer, and its use of chorus vocals on a number of tracks. Wade Marcus and George Bohannon helped with arrangements – and titles include a great funky remake of Fischer's "Morning" – plus "Veronica", "Gold The Moon, White The Sun", "Marilyn", "Pretty Baby", and "People Suppose To Be Free". Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), Late 60s. Near Mint- 6LPs ... $99.99
Volume two of this fantastic series from Deutsche Grammophon – a surprisingly strong showcase for modern music from a mainstream classical label! LP1 features John Cage works "Atlas Eclipticalis", "Winter Music", and "Cartridge Music" – plus "Glossolalie" by Dieter Schnebel. LP2 features work from the legendary Italian avant group Gruppe Nuova Consonanza – with Ennio Morricone, Walter Branchi, Egisto Macchi, and others. LP3 features "Hallelulah" by Mauricio Kagel and "Furst Stimmen" by Dieter Schnebel. LP4 features work by Gottfried Michael Koenig – "Funktion Grun", "Terminus II", "Zoltan Pongracz", and "Phonothese" – plus "Chants De Maldoror" by Rainer Riehn. LP5 features the Stockhausen pieces "Mixtur" and "Telemusik". LP6 features works by Bernd Alois Zimmermann – "Presence" and "Intercomumincazione". LP, Vinyl record album

Terry CallierFire On Ice ... LP
Elektra, 1978. Very Good ... $8.99
One of the great albums from Terry Callier's "second chapter" on record – a time when he was working for Elektra Records, and doing work that was a bit straighter soul than before – and also slightly jazzy as well! The record's kind of a mix of jazzy grooves and smoother soul – typical for the fusion division of Elektra at the time, where Callier's hard-to-peg work was relegated. There's some really great songs on the record – and although the arrangements sometimes lack the sensitivity of the Cadet scorings of earlier years, they're still pretty great from a modern soul perspective. Richard Evans is producing and arranging the session, and Terry's still got help from a lot of Chicago friends like Minnie Riperton, Eddie Harris, and Phil Upchurch – all of whom help to keep the album relatively strong. Titles include some really nice originals, like "African Violet" and "Butterfly", both of which are some of Terry's best compositions from the time – plus "Love Two Love", "Martin St Martin", "Street Fever", and "Be A Believer". Elektra/DBK Works, 1979. Used ... $6.99
Our favorite Elektra album by Terry – different than his earlier work for Cadet, with a smoother jazz-based style of backing. The change works surprisingly well for Terry, pushing him into a new sound that still preserves his honest soulful vocals. The album includes nice remakes of "Ordinary Joe" and "Occasional Rain", both from his days on Cadet, plus the great track "Turn You To Love". Also includes a groovy cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again". CD

Philip Catherine with Marc MoulinStream ... LP
Warner/KTI (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99
One of the coolest records ever from guitarist Philip Catherine, and one of the funkiest too – thanks to a really sharp edge that you won't find on some of his other albums, and lots of Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin too! Some of Catherine's other records of the 70s were a bit laidback or noodly – but this set's got a strong, soulful drive all the way through – a nice focus that may well come from the production of Sacha Distel, himself a onetime guitarist! But the group's just got things right on the money, right from the start – with some very strong funky drums from Freddy Rotheir, plus trombone from Jiggs Wigham and both bass and flute from Freddy Deronde. Titles include "Bassline", "Let's Put It Like This", "Stream", "Foire", "Face", "Jeux Interdits", and "Memphis Talk". LP, Vinyl record album

A killer cut! The Clark Sisters were mostly a gospel-oriented group, but they cut this amazing groover during the early 80s, and it's got a semi-secular sound that launched them into the mainstream soul world for a while. The cut's got a great stepping groove, a very catchy hook in the chorus, and a nice nice soulful sound. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Stanley ClarkeSchool Days ... CD
Columbia, 1976. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A massive hit for Stanley Clarke – a record that has him reigning in some of his wilder elements a bit, and going for a groove that's right in the pocket! There's a definite soul fusion influence going on here – Clarke trying to hit the same groove as some of his contemporaries, and doing a pretty good job of it in the process. Still, the album's never as polished as efforts like this on Blue Note or Elektra – just a bit more focused than before, but in a really good way. David Sancious and Chick Corea both play keyboards on the set – and tracks include "School Days", "Hot Fun", "Desert Song", "The Dancer", and "Quiet Afternoon". CD
