✨✧ AB SkhyAB Skhy ... LP
MGM, 1969. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
AB Skhy are one of those totally great late 60s groups who never fully got their due – overflowing with instrumental chops and bearing a really sharp sound – but never hitting the mark that they should have with this well-done debut! The group push blues influences into psych, and come up with a heady brew that's really wonderful – filled with the usual guitar, bass, and drums – but also given lots of wicked organ work from Howard Wales – who some folks know for a later recording with Jerry Garcia! Everyone is completely top-shelf here – and the group bring in some horns and guest harmonica from Jim Liban – really pushing their sound on titles that include "Camel Back", "24 Hours", "Upsets Me Baby", "Of All Sad Words", "Understand", and "Love Isn't". ✨✧ Cannonball Adderley74 Miles Away/Walk Tall ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... $13.99
A stone classic from Cannonball Adderley – and a pivotal set that has him continuing the live recording setting of some of his best 60s albums, while also stretching forward to some of the more inventive ideas of the latter part of the decade! David Axelrod produced, and the album's definitely got his ear firmly in place – a great way of bringing together the album's hip instrumentation – Cannon's alto, Nat Adderley's cornet, and the wicked electric piano of Joe Zawinul – played here in a style that would go onto have a huge influence on countless other musicians on the instrument. Rhythm is by Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums – and as with other Axelrod live albums, there's some great spoken bits left in the mix – Cannon's charming conversation with the audience, which really opens up the tunes. Titles include the 2 title hits – "Walk Tall" and "74 Miles Away" – plus "I Remember Bird", "Oh Babe", and "Do Do Do". CD

Riverside/Capitol, 1962. Used ... $6.99
A great live classic from the Cannonball Adderley Sextet of the early 60s – that famous group that included Nat Adderley on cornet, Yusef Lateef on tenor and flute, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! Tracks are long, and these guys are really on fire in a live setting – and titles include a stellar 11 minute version of "The Jive Samba", one of Cannonball's greatest track – plus "Primitivo", "Lillie", and "Mellow Buno". CD includes the bonus track "Unit 7"! CD

✨✧ King Sunny AdeSynchro System/Aura ... CD
Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

Agent OrangeLiving In Darkness ... LP
Posh Boy/Radiation (Italy), New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Hard-ripping genius from Agent Orange – one of the group's first moments on wax, and arguably one of their greatest, too! The set's everything you'd ever want from an LA hardcore record from the glory days – tight, fast, simple, and completely effective – the kind of music that America did best, right at a time when the punk rock flag was failing in other parts of the globe – just guitar, bass, and drums – but played with an energy that set fire to a whole new generation! Includes the classic "Everything Turns Grey", a great remake of "Miserlou", and the cuts "Living In Darkness", "A Cry For Help In A World Gone Mad", "No Such Thing", and "Too Young To Die". Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A mix of fusiony jazz rock, a bit of funk and some more sweeping arrangements – sometimes in the span of a single song on this fairly underappreciated Atlantic set from Jan Akkerman! Mixing easy listening and funk is the kind of thing that's pulled off pretty well, or falls completely flat, and Jan makes it work here. A couple tracks feature lead vocals by Yvette Cason or Willie Dee, and players include Michael Brecker, Bunny Brunell, Howard Johnson and Neppie Noya. Includes "Stingray (Get Up With That)", "Wait And See" "She's So Divine", "This Is The One", "Night Prayer" and "Time Out Of Mind". CD

AktionGroove The Funk ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1975. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
The title's no like – as these guys definitely groove, and they're definitely funky too – a sweet 70s combo from the Lagos scene, and one who play with a very sharp edge at their core! Aktion make nice use of darker, downturning chords – which creates a moody feel to their funk, and a vibe that's a bit in the territory of bigger-name acts like Cymande and Blo – and like the former, they've also got a great bassist, who makes for lots of dubby currents in the rhythms! Vocals are in English, but layered in this cool way with the organ lines and riffing guitars that dominate most of the instrumentation – on titles that include "Tell Me Baby", "Play With Me", "Groove The Funk", "I Don't Have To Cry", "Masquerade", and "I've Got To Hope For Tomorrow". Alessandro Alessandroni/Jessica DuncanItalian Library Songbook Vol 1 – Do You Wanna Get Close/Philadelphia ... 12-inch
Four Flies (Italy), 1976/2021. New Copy ... $26.99
A really great little single – one that takes a famous older theme from Italian sound library giant Alessandro Alessandroni, and turns it into a fantastic soul cut with vocals by Jessica Duncan! This isn't a cheapo "soundtrack remix" cut – as the tune's rebuilt right from the start, with these cool offbeat keyboards over a rock-solid bassline, while Jessica spins out the lyric with a really seductive vibe! "Philadelphia" is more classic-styled sound library funk – a hip piano line at the start, just waiting to be sampled – while a bassline dips in and out next to funky drums – before the tune all comes together and hits this wicked midtempo funky groove, complete with a saxophone solo in the middle! A pricey single – but definitely quality throughout. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Joey AlexanderJoey – Monk – Live ... CD
Motema, 2017. Used ... $5.99
The best sort of Thelonious Monk set in our opinion – the kind of record that draws heavily from the legacy of the master, but also delivers something completely new and fresh! Let's face it, Monk would wince at the idea of folks just copying his style and ideas – and Joey Alexander hardly does that at all here, by really transforming familiar Monk numbers with this modern approach that's both fluid and chunky at the same time! Alexander's hands on the keys are amazing – and almost feel like he's grabbing chunks of sound out of the air, to sculpt these sonic shapes based on the ideas of the tunes. The structure of the tunes is subtly but greatly enhanced by the work of Scott Colley on bass and Willie Jones III on drums – and titles include "Ugly Beauty", "Rhythm A Ning", "Straight No Chaser", "Pannonica", and "Evidence". Terry AllenPedal Steal & Four Corners (LP/3CDs/book – with download) ... LP
Paradise Of Bachelors, Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy LP, 3CD & Book ... $28.99 32.99
Terry Allen has always been one of the most enigmatic figures in Texas music – but the work included here might well be some of his most compelling – even if it is a bit far from the straighter country of his start! Allen's always been a very narrative songwriter – and here, he takes that form one further – in a series of radio plays and longer audio narratives, most of which intersperse sung passages with spoken bits, sound effects, and beautiful music as well! These aren't any sort of sleepy, too-prosaic works – but instead, the sort of material that's always had us link Allen's music with the books of Barry Gifford or Barry Hannah – instantly evocative, and with a vision for storytelling that's completely captivating – a journey begun on his Juarez album, and really extended here. The special package features the first vinyl appearance of a few of these pieces – and 3CDs of music that contain the complete "Pedal Steel", "Torso Hell", "Bleeder", "Dugout", and "Reunion (A Return To Juarez)". Also features a great 28 page booklet on all the material! LP, Vinyl record album

Mose AllisonMose Allison – The Complete Atlantic/Elektra Albums – 1962 to 1983 (6CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Strawberry (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 6CD ... $39.99 59.99
A really wonderful collection of music – work that has an already-great artist taking off into all these new directions of his own – completely reinventing himself as the jazz generations moved on, always with a really strong sense of wit and imagination! Mose Allison first emerged as a bop pianist in the 50s, but soon added a unique vocal approach that was a bit New Orleans-tinged, but with a beat jazz sensibility too – a style that was a huge influence on the UK mods in the 60s, and countless others over the years! By the time Mose hit Atlantic Records in 1962, he was already perfecting that style – then opening it up to other elements as the 60s moved on, often hitting some wilder, more unusual approaches that just kept coming through the 70s! As he shifted over to Elektra Records at the end of that decade, he stepped slightly back to more traditional jazz vocal modes – but still also kept penning his own great tunes, often with themes that maintained his unique sense of wit and vision. The box features a whopping 104 tracks on 6CDs – 12 full albums that include I Don't Worry About A Thing, Swingin Machine, Word From Mose, Wild Man Is On The Loose, Mose Alive, I've Been Doin Some Thinkin, Hello There Universe, Western Man, Mose In Your Ear, Your Mind Is On Vacation, Middle Class White Boy, and Lessons In Living. ✨✧ Malik AlstonMalik Alston Presents Painted Pictures – Air ... LP
Jazz Diaries, 2021. New Copy ... $23.99 26.99
Fantastic funky keyboard work from Malik Alston – an artist we loved when he first rose up from the Detroit scene earlier in the century, and who seems to have only gotten better as the years move on! Malik's music has a sophistication here we didn't hear at the start – still largely rhythms and keyboards, but augmented with jazzy contributions from collaborators, and taken into much more spiritual territory overall – definitely with the richness that you might expect from the "painted pictures" title! There's vocals on a few cuts, but the keyboards and other instruments really take the lead – on titles that include "Butterfly", "Where Do We Go", "Linwood", "Rise Up", "Air", and "Almost On The One". Gritty live work from twin tenor giants Gene Ammons and Dexter Gordon – recorded in an open-ended style that's a bit like some of Gordon's famous early work on the Central Avenue scene in LA, or Ammons' famous live "battles" with Sonny Stitt! The date was recorded in Chicago at the North Park Hotel – with sound that's a bit more "live" than some of the other Prestige sessions at the time – and an unusual lineup that features local players Jodie Christian and John Young on piano, Cleveland Eaton on bass, and Steve McCall on drums. The lovely Vi Redd makes a vocal appearance on the track "Lonesome Lover Blues" – and other titles include "The Chase", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and "The Happy Blues" – all nice and long! The album was recorded live, and features a great pairing of electronic and acoustic elements – and is presented here with notes from Rob Mazurek, whose own music can hit similar territory at times – making him the perfect person to direct our approach to the proceedings! However, there's also a difference here – some nicely organic moments at times, when the electronics almost take on qualities of the other instruments – mixed with other passages that have them in starker contrast. ✨✧ Apple & The Three OrangesFree & Easy – The Complete Works 1970 to 1975 (with download) ... LP
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 19.99
A funky treasure trove from Apple & The Three Oranges – a group we hardly know at all, but who really blow us away with the cuts on this collection! The groove is plenty hard right from the get-go – the best of the funky 45 underground of the early 70s – which means that there's more 60s rawness on the record than you'd get from bigger-label funk at the time – as Ed "Apple" Nelson still works here with a mostly underground vibe! Ed plays drums – which are mighty hard on most numbers – and his vocals have this offbeat, off-kilter, over the top quality that almost reminds us a bit of the Hank Ballard/James Brown recordings for late 60s King – particularly in the way that Nelson's completely unbridled with his energy. The whole thing's great – one of the best funky collections we've heard in years – and presented with a rich amount of notes and historical information too. Titles include "Free & Easy (parts 1 & 2)", "Moon Light", "Curse Upon The World", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Down Home Publicity", "True Love Will Never Die", "Gotta Stand For Something (parts 1 & 2)", and "I'll Give You A Ring". Jugoton (Croatia), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CDs ... $16.99 19.99
A pair of funky nuggets from Croatia – back to back in a single set! Majko Zemljo is the debut album from the mighty Tihomir Pop Asanovic – a hell of a keyboardist, and a singer with a nicely rough edge – one that makes the non-English lyrics of the set have a really great appeal, especially when they're laid out next to some great keyboard solos too! Instrumentation shifts slightly from track to track, but there's a fantastic funky combo working with Tihomir throughout –really giving the whole thing a jazz/funk/soul vibe that's quite a surprise from 70s Croatia. Titles include "Balada O Liscu", "Berlin 1", "Tema Za Pop Lp", "Telepatiia", "Ostavia Trag", and "Rokenrol Dizanier". Next up is the album Pop – a killer set from the 70s scene in Yugoslavia – a record that's got plenty of sweet Fender Rhodes next to the vocals – and a really universal funky appeal that goes way beyond the boundaries of language! The keyboards speak plenty, and even get some great space for jazzy solos at times – but even the vocal moments are great too, as Tihomir sings with a rough edge that falls in nicely next to the heavy bass and drums on the record – a bit of Croatian soul that furthers the funky vibe of the whole thing! Titles include "Usamljena Devojka", "Mali Crni Brat", "Vremena Je Malo", "Ekspres Novi Sad", and "Skakavac". CD

Some songs are gentle, others are upbeat and swinging – and these latter ones are the ones we really love, as they've got this 80s jazzy soul mode that's almost in the vein of some UK groups of the period, such as Working Week. The group's led by reedman Ari Brown – better known for his later avant work – and they've got a wicked blend of keyboards and horns with lots of complicated touches, played out over funky rhythms that are completely mindblowing! The great Ken Chaney plays keyboards, and in addition to Brown's reeds, the set also features trumpet from Frank Gordon, trombone from Steve Galloway, and bass from Rufus Reid – plus cool percussion from Arlington Davis and Drasheer Khalid. Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part One (4th World War) ... CD
Motown, 2008. Used ... $3.99
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". The 9th Wonder produced single "Honey" is an unlisted bonus track. CD

Sublime sound cues from BBC maestro John Baker – a wonderful blend of jazzy moments and weird electronic sounds – often used together at the same time! The feel here is as hip as the hippest Brit TV of the 60s – some very righteous grooves that would have made great records on their own – mixed with moodier moments that blend together all sorts of forward-thinking elements, at a level that was hardly being done on American TV at the time – easy shifts between timings and tones that keep the whole thing moving with an incredible degree of freshness throughout – with a sound that's way way different than any sort of other television work we can think of. Some tracks have improvised tenor or flute passages, often while other weird electric bits are taking place – and there's also lots of nice work on drums and percussion, which further gives the electronics a direction! Some of the hardest, heaviest vocal group work of the pre-soul generation – a set of legendary King Records material by the young Hank Ballard and his always-tight Midnighters! The set captures them in the second chapter of their time at King – slightly cleaner in some of their subject matter, but always with that sneering, almost sinister vibe that Hank brought to his vocals – kind of a biting, raspy quality that also made his voice a key influence on soul to come in the 60s! There's a few hits here, but also lots more obscure material too – and titles include "That House On The Hill", "Sweet Mama Do Right", "I'll Be Home Someday", "Tell Them", "Stingy Little Thing", "Ashamed Of Myself", "Teardrops On Your Letter", and "The Twist". Reverend Robert Ballinger with Willie DixonKing's Highway ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 22.99
Robert Ballinger might be a Reverend, but he's got the sound of a 50s bluesman in Chicago – no surprise, as he recorded most of these tracks in the Windy City during the decade – with plenty of help from the great Willie Dixon on bass! Ballinger sings and plays piano on these cuts – with raw, romping energy that makes these vintage singles as appealing as blues sides as they are as gospel gems – originally done for labels that include Chess, United, and Peacock – sometimes with added backing vocals or instrumentation, but always with Ballinger's raw energy at the core. This 2CD set is the first we've ever seen to really do justice to these recordings – and features 35 tracks that include "Hold My Body Down", "No Bread", "He's My Everything", "The Little Black Train", "How I Got Over", "Something Has Happened", "Poor Wayfaring Pilgrim", "Oil In Your Vessel", "Standing In The Safety Zone", "This Train", "God Rode In A Windstorm", "The Life I Sing About", "Sweet Lamb", and "I Got To Tell It". Ballister (Nilssen-Love/Rempis/Lonberg-Holm)Znachki Stilyag ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. Titles include "Old Worms", "Hotel Mary Poppins", and "F*ck The Money Changers". CD

Capitol, 1969. Used ... $4.99
Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". A fantastic classic from The Band – a set that's hardly got them cowering in the corner the way the "stage fright" title might imply – and which instead seems to have the group at their most confident during the early years, effortlessly spinning impeccable musicianship and some surprisingly biting lyrics! The young Robbie Robertson is on guitar, Garth Hudson warms things up with organ lines, and vocals are handled by the shifting array of other players in the lead – Rick Danko, Levon Helm, and Richard Manuel. Titles include "The Shape I'm In", "Sleeping", "Strawberry Wine", "Just Another Whistle Stop", "Daniel & The Sacred Harp", "Stage Fright", and "Time To Kill". 2CD version, with lots of bonus material! CD1 features "Strawberry Wine (alternate)", "Sleeping (alternate)", and Calgary Hotel Room Recordings from 1970 – of "Mojo Hannah", "Calgary Blues", "Before You Accuse Me", "The WS Walcott Medicine Show", and two takes of "Get Up Jake". CD2 features lots lots more – a 20 track live set, recorded in June 1971 at the Royal Albert Hall in London! CD

Zambezi/Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
One of the moodiest albums we've ever heard from the Zamrock scene of the 70s – a record of slow-building tunes with a very personal vibe – all vocals and most instrumentation handled by Ricky Banda himself – in a style that's more intimate than other Zambian albums of the time! The style's not entirely folksy or singer/songwriter – but definitely stands in that territory in comparison to Zamrock group efforts of the time – psychedelic currents muted a bit, and focused in some slight instrumental elements, while the snakey progression of Ricky's vocals really carries the main weight of the record. Titles include "Let's Get Up Brothers", "Who's That Guy", "Yangu E Mwebaleya", "Away From Home", "I Believe The Man In The Sky", and "Mavuto". LP, Vinyl record album

Billy BangDistinction Without A Difference (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Billy Bang has always been one of the most incredible players on his instrument – a jazz violinist who could take the strings into freely creative territory, yet also somehow manage to swing – a balance that nobody ever seemed to manage as well as Bang! And while Billy's work in groups is always wonderful, the strengths of his genius maybe come through even more in a solo setting like this – as Bang uses the violin in ways that are completely unheard of, even in jazz work of the decade before – but also while somehow holding to an inherent core that always makes his music make immediate sense, even to the most casual listener. The album's a true testament to the genius that Bang brought to jazz violin – and why we still love him on the instrument more than anyone else. Titles include "Theme For Masters", "Sometime Later", "Improvisation On Sweet Space", and "Loweski". This great edition comes in a gatefold LP-styled cover – almost like a mini version of the original record released by Hat Hut – with bonus tracks that include "Fiddle In The Floodlight", "Subway Ride With Giuseppi Logan", "Echo Vamp", "Prana", and "A Pebble Is A Small Rock". Bar-KaysToo Hot To Stop/Flying High On Your Love ... CD
Mercury/Superbird (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A pair of Mercury Records gems from the Bar-Kays – back to back in a single set! First up is Too Hot To Stop – a pivotal album from The Bar-Kays – a key post-Stax set, but one that's still very firmly grounded in Memphis funk! The groove definitely shows a bit more polish than before – the same sort of shift the Ohio Players made after moving to Mercury Records – but as with the Players at their best, there's still plenty of sharp edges and deeply funky moments on the record – and if anything, the shift has really given The Bar-Kays a way to evolve their sound past some of the heavier modes of the early days, without losing any of the appeal of their groove! Some cuts have some great keyboards – almost producing a spacey funk feel at points – and titles include "Too Hot To Stop (part 1)", "You're So Sexy", "Cozy", "Spellbound", "Whitehouseorgy", and the nice mellow track "Summer Of Our Love". Flying High is a killer too – a great step forward for The Bar-Kays – an album that actually has them taking on a few mellower moments, amidst the heavy funk you might expect – yet all without softening their groove at all! The album's very much in the best spirit of the group's Mercury debut – still recorded in Memphis, with production that's tight, but never uptight – enough to firmly put the group at the top of the funk superstar scene of the mid 70s, yet never sell out the rich Memphis groove that first got them going! Titles include "You Can't Run Away", "Let's Have Some Fun", "Can't Keep My Hands Off You", "Whatever It Is", and "Shut the Funk Up". CD

Mt Zion/Numero, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
A soul record we'd put up there with some of our favorites produced in Chicago during the early 70s – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir, of Mt. Zion Baptist Church – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was cut at the affordable Sound Market Studio – but behind the soaring, spirited lead and chorus vocal arrangements are players supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too. Raw drums, grooving organ, and incredible bass lines lay the foundation, but it's the voices that really shine on this completely wonderful, totally essential set! Titles include "Like A Ship", "Wonderful", "It's Me O Lord", "Ever Since", "Nobody Knows", "Joyful Noice", "Medley/Dr. Watts Hymn & The Disciples Prayer" and "Blessed Quietness". Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $35.99 41.99
A tremendous package of work from this overlooked soul and gospel legend – four classic albums, plus other rare material too – all packaged with detailed notes in the wonderful Numero Group style! First up is Like A Ship Without A Sail – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too – and the music is filled with raw drums, heavy bass, and lots of great organ lines! Next is Do Not Pass Me By Vol 1 – an album that's got a nice balance between intimate soul numbers and larger tracks that have the whole Mount Zion Baptist Church along for support! The set's definitely got the strongly soulful vibe of Barrett's Like A Ship album – a strong ear for the best secular elements of the time, which are used liberally in the instrumental backing – to really send home the message in the music! Most tunes really soft-pedal the religion, and instead go for an overall feel that really crosses over to regular soul music. Next is the great second volume of Do Not Pass Me By – like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. I Found The Answer is one of the biggest-circulating albums from this fantastic figure in Chicago gospel – a unique set done for the Gospel Truth subsidiary of Stax Records, but a set served up in the same blend of soul-based inspirations as some of TL Barrett's indie label releases back home in the Windy City! Plus, the package features a full album of Singles & Sermons – rare non-LP material by this seminal figure in both soul and spiritual music. CD

This isn't the first time that pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland have played together – but there's definitely something special about the record that really grabs our ears – and it's not just the excellent work on drums by Johnathan Blake! Barron's at his roundest, most soulful sort of tone – really grabbing the notes out of the air in this wonderful way – and Holland really follows suit too, with this very personal, organic approach that's such a change from some of his more experimental work of years back – and which makes him a stunning part of the group, especially at all those many moments when he and Barron dance around each other's sound with this beautifully resonant vibe. Nathan BartellNathan Bartell ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $24.99 26.99
Fantastic funky soul from a very mysterious figure – Georgia's Nathan Bartell, a singer with a deep soul style, and an under-exposed legacy that mostly involves a few indie label singles, and countless work in the smaller clubs of his state! The blend of music here is a bit different than most collections of this nature – as Nathan's work spans both the hard-hitting funky 45 world of the 70s, and the emerging groove styles of the 80s – which means that the record begins with the kind of funky material you'd guess from other southern singles of the time, then moves into midtempo modern soul that's more in the territory of Leon Ware! The mix of modes is a great testament to the under-recognized strengths of Bartell – an artist who kept on growing, even if the rest of the world wasn't paying attention at the time. Titles include "I Feel It Coming", "Top Going Down Bottom Going Up", "Moving On", "Some One Like You", "Ooh Baby I Love You", "Mystery Lady", "I Want Your Love", "See Me Cry", "If I Could Win Your Love", and "Jody & John". Roulette, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Frank Foster is one of our favorite talents in jazz – an excellent tenorist who spent some of his key years in the Count Basie orchestra, but a player who also had a very rich career on his own as well! This album features Frank's talents really coming to the forefront of the Basie group – in a set of all-original material penned and arranged by Foster – really fresh tunes that are a perfect fit for the soulful spirit of the reedman's collaborators in the group, and which definitely show off the growing talents of Foster as a composer. There's a lot more going on here than you might expect – some surprisingly complicated charts for the horns, yet still with that rock-solid swing you'd expect from Basie – and most tracks are longer than usual for a Roulette album, nicely open numbers that include "Brotherly Shove", "Easin It", "Blues For Daddy-O", "Four Five Six", and "Mama Dev". ✨✧ Count BasieOn My Way & Shoutin Again – Count Basie Plays Music By Neal Hefti/Not Now I'll Tell You When ... CD
Verve/Roulette/American Jazz Classics (Spain), 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
On My Way & Shoutin Again is a wonderful album of 60s Basie – one that focuses on the writing and arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti's one of our favorite soundtrack composers of the decade, but in the years before his film fame, he was a frequent partner of Basie – and this album marks one of their greatest collaborations together. The tunes are very much in the "loud, then soft, then loud" mode that Hefti pioneered with Basie's angular group of the 50s – but they've also got some of the warmer, more whimsical touches that Neal would explore more fully in his later soundtrack work too. The result is a classic Basie session, but with plenty of surprises – featuring a fresh batch of tunes that includes "Jump For Johnny", "Ducky Bumps", "Rose Bud", "Shanghaied", "Together Again", and "Eee Dee". Not Now I'll Tell You When is a great title for this classic Count Basie album – as it really gets at the tight, focused direction that makes Basie so great at this point in his career – his way of singling out each and every instrumentalist, and perfectly timing their performances! The sense of rhythm is what makes the Basie group so different from so many other large ensembles – not big band swing, not tonal modern, but this rootsy, soulful style at the bottom – even when the instrumentation is impeccable – that undeniable groove that makes a record like this swing from the start, then keep on going strongly, even when lots of colors and tones come into the mix. The whole lineup's great – and players include Frank Wess on flute, Frank Foster on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, and Freddie Green on guitar – and the album features a lot of sweet originals that really keep things interesting – including "The Daly Jump", "Not Now I'll Tell You When", "Rare Butterfly", "Back To The Apple", "Blue On Blue", and "Swingin At The Waldorf". Capitol, 1966. Used ... $4.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". A bittersweet farewell from The Beatles – a record that definitely shows the fracturing unity of the group, with lots of near-solo moments – but a set that also makes us really wonder what they'd have done with all this genius, had they managed to hold it together! There's great hints here of the solo work to come – especially from George Harrison and John Lennon – and the Phil Spector production really helps open up a new sound for the group. A glam folk rock album from mid 70s France – the only album by the Beautiful Losers – a record feels like the most restrained and acoustic based moments on glam era Bowie and Bolan efforts – sung in English and with big chords and big vocals but done mostly with just voice and acoustic guitar and a bass! It's hard to tell of the Losers were dreaming of a bigger, fuller sound, but the sparseness ultimately suits the songs and performances well, and makes quite a unique record. Drummer Han Bennink always has a way of picking the most creative improvisers to work with – and that's definitely the case here, as he teams up with Oscar Jan Hoogland – a musician whose main instrument is piano, but who also handles electric clavichord, record players, cassettes, megaphones, and crackle box – sometimes handling more than one instrument at once! The sonic variety makes for a hugely interesting record – a reminder that Bennink can always match himself up to whatever sort of environment is at hand, even if it's one that's supra-musical – and the music here really leaps from the grooves as the duo makes their way through selections that include "Propeller", "Fleurette Africaine Fleurete Japonaise", "Frafra Traffick/Masinko Monk/Rookgordijn/Rhythm Three", "Musique Automatique Typographique", "Hornin In Hornin Out/Peers Counting Song", and a version of "Ugly Beauty". A&M/CTI, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... $2.99
An early George Benson groover from the A&M years of CTI – a set that's quite different than his famous 70s sets, with a really unique sound overall! The arrangements here are by Latin Soul maestro Marty Sheller – who brings some of the vibe to the set that he brought to his 60s work with Mongo Santamaria – not a straight Latin sound overall, but one that comes through strongly in some of the percussion and horns! Players are all pretty hip – and keyboards are from Richard Tee on most of the best tracks – and drums are from Idris Muhammad throughout, working here under his original name of Leo Morris. Main solos are from Benson on guitar – although the record also features alto solos from Sonny Fortune and Bobby Porcelli – who'd both stepped out a bit with Santamaria too. Columbia, 1958. Very Good ... $2.99
A bittersweet set of vocals from Polly Bergen – recorded with a sound that really fits her sad-eyed look on the cover! Although Bergen's voice is sometimes confident and full, it's nicely restrained here – often somewhat dark-toned and moody – in ways that remind us of Morgana King, especially in the way that Polly holds back at just the right moments – keeping things mature by never getting too overly emotive. There's a nice sense of depth to the record that goes way beyond simple pop singing – and Luther Henderson's arrangements further help color the sound of the set – by giving it a sense of unity that almost reminds us of some of Sinatra's best blue-toned late 50s albums for Capitol. Titles include "By Myself", "When The Wind Was Green", "All Alone", "Glad To Be Unhappy", "Too Late Now", "He Didn't Call", and "Not Like Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Steve BergsmanI Put A Spell On You – The Bizarre Life Of Screamin Jay Hawkins ... Book
Feral House, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 17.95
Screamin Jay Hawkins is best-remembered for his crazy R&B tune "I Put A Spell On You" – a wild track from the postwar years – and it turns out that the man himself has had a life that's equally wild over the years, served up here by author Steve Bergsman, pulled from hundreds of interviews with Hawkins, bandmates, and family members too! Screamin Jay would often spin plenty of tales about himself – which can make telling the truth a difficult task – and rather that completely focus on that challenge, the book instead enjoys the play between fact and fiction, life and legend, and really revels in the larger-than-life quality of Hawkins! Book is 252 pages, softcover, with some color images, and a lot more black and white images. Book

Chuck BerryToronto Rock & Roll Revival 1969 ... CD
Sunset Blvd, 1969. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A searing live set from Chuck Berry – one that's way better than the "rock and roll revival" in the title! In 1969, Chuck was still completely on fire – after making some albums for Mercury that were filled with expansive guitar lines and really great sounds – and about to move back to Chess, where he'd experiment with funk too! Here, Berry stretches out in a live setting with all these wicked long guitar solos – of a sort that you'd be hard-pressed to find on earlier records – almost like he's showing the Hendrix generation that he was there first! Sure, most of the tunes are familiar – but the versions here are very different – and titles include "Wee Wee Hours", "Memphis Tennessee", "Maybellene", "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", "Rock & Roll Music", "School Day", "Johnny B Good/Carol/Promised Land", and "Reelin & Rockin". A timeless, crackling soul and west coast funk-inspired hip hop instrumentals set from Melting Pot Music supergroup Betty Ford Boys – the triple threat production trio of Suff Daddy, Dexter and Brenk Sinatra! Each one manages to serve up what we've dug to date from their earlier, separate productions – from the Moog-flavored funk of Suff Daddy, to the classic G-Funk-inspired funk of Brenk Sinatra, to the hip hop funk electicism of Dexter – and it's all held together nicely thanks the intoxicating concept and the thematic vocal samples. Uni/Future Shock (Italy), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
One of the weirdest, wildest albums from percussionist Big Black – a set that stretches out with a vibe that's a lot trippier and jazzier at times than some of his other work! Part of the album's strength comes from the arrangements – which are partly handled by Phil Moore, an artist who created all these other great album projects in the late 60s – often, like this one, a cool mix of exotic currents with new trends in funk and jazz – served up here by a lineup that features Moore on piano, Herman Riley and Chester Washington on tenors, Bruce Langhorn and the mysterious Brother Soul on guitars, and Thurman Green on trombone. Curtis Peagler adds in some alto and flute, and Owen Marshall plays the wild hose-a-phone, plus a host of percussion instruments too – while Big Black himself handles congas and a bit of vocals. Side one features the long jamming "Lion Walk" – and side two features "Tell Me, Do Your Conscience Bother You", "Love Sweet Like Sugar Cane", and "Come On Down To The Beach". LP, Vinyl record album

Likely, 2018. Used ... $11.99
Fantastic future soul from Bigyuki – an artist who's got a really far-reaching vision for his music – even though his sound is very stripped down overall! The music here is almost a science fiction take on contemporary soul – with these really wonderful, almost sinister keyboards and basslines – used in electronic flows that are wrapped alongside guest lyrics from Bilal, Chris Turner and others – but which also are more than happy to hang around some beats, and shift in these beautiful instrumental modes! The whole thing is completely unique – immediately contemporary, but with the depth of keyboard work of the past – jazz elements in the mix somewhere, but nice and lean overall. Titles include "Burnt N Turnt", "Pom Pom", "Eclipse", "Simple Like You", "Soft Places", "NuNu", "In A Spiral", "2060 Chiron", "Boom", and "Belong". CD

A later album from Jane B, but one that's still pretty darn groovy, thanks to arrangements from Alan Hawkshaw! The overall sound is somewhat in keeping with the date – keyboards and rhythms that sound more 80s than 70s – but the tunes themselves have all the breathy, sensual qualities of Birkin's best work with Serge Gainsbourg from years back – no surprise, given that Serge wrote all the tunes in the set! As before, the combination of Birkin and Gainsbourg is hard to resist – still the standard by which so much other work like this should be judged – on either side of the Atlantic. An album that definitely lives up to its title – thanks to a strong embrace of funky boogie styles, but served up here with a sweet Nigerian twist! Some cuts are heavy funk right from the start – clearly inspired by Kool & The Gang and other sharp-edged American groups of the 70s – while others have a slightly looser rhythmic approach, but one that still grooves nicely, too – all given some great energy by the vocals of Steve Black, whose style of singing is nicely playful, and almost as bubbling as the instrumentation! The title track has this really cool mix of electronics and dub – and titles include "Brand New Wayo", "Igholoye", "Precious Tim", "Village Boogie", "When You Know What's Wrong", "Fun In The Street", and "Step Out When You're Down". All titles are originals, and have this progressive, soaring vibe – spiritual, but not in a mellow way – and instead very much up to date in terms of contemporary jazz expression, thanks to the individual strengths of the soloists – who feel completely unified throughout. Their name may be a mouthful, but the Black Children Sledge Funk Band have a groove that's nice and lean – a wicked blend of basslines, percussion, and lots of riffing guitar – plus these very cool keyboards that wander over the grooves and give the whole thing a sweetly spacey vibe! These guys are definitely on the sharper side of the Afro funk spectrum – and occasionally have some trippy elements in their music – especially when the vocals come together from the group members, which creates a heady quality that lives up to the album's great cover image. Afro 7 (Estonia), Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A Kenyan funk combo from the 70s – and one who've got a groove that definitely lives up to the striking image on the cover! The set brings together obscure singles and album tracks from Black Savage – a group who sing in English throughout, and also draw plenty of influence from American soul acts as well – but always with a vibe that filters the music through a slightly fuzzy sort of veil – creating lots of weird, wild elements on the guitars as well as the vocals – both of which seem to be pretty processed in the production! There's almost a Westbound Records sort of spirit to the record at times – that trippy blend of funk and psych that was a Detroit hallmark at the start of the 70s – although a few other tunes have a more sing/song, catchy sort of approach. Don BlackmanDon Blackman ... CD
Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Ed BlackwellWhat It Is – Ed Blackwell Project Vol 1 ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the last recordings made by Ed Blackwell before his early passing in 1992 – an Oakland live date recorded with an excellent lineup that includes Graham Haynes on cornet, Carlos Ward on alto and flute, and Mark Helias on bass – working without any piano, at a level that maybe echoes some of Ed's earlier work with Ornette Coleman, but with a voice that's completely his own. The style here is earthy and organic – never overly modern, and building in a way that echoes Blackwell's angular roots, but transforms that sound into more spiritually exploratory lines. Ward's work is especially great, and the absence of a piano means that the interplay between cornet and sax is the main driving force of most tunes. Ran BlakeFilm Noir ... CD
Novus/International Phonograph, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 21.98
One of the most evocative albums we've ever heard from pianist Ran Blake – a set that's got all the sharp edges of some of his most adventurous solo work, but one that also has Ran working in a few different settings, often with a very poetic feel! The set's not a hokey retro-crime record – as you might fear from the title (and countless later jazz albums that evoke that aesthetic) – and although Blake's working through melodies from older films, plus a few original numbers in the same spirit, his presentation is completely unique – and explosively personal throughout! His own piano is tremendous – blocks of sound and runs of notes that are extremely imaginative, and which flow forward from the same dark spirit we love on Blake's other recordings. And they're often balanced with shifting contributions from other musicians – players who include John Heiss on flute, Paul Meyers on bass, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Daryl Lowrey on alto and soprano sax – all of whom make some great additions to the set. Titles include a nice take on "The Pawnbroker" – plus other film titles that include "Eve", "Touch Of Evil", "Le Boucher", "Pinky", and "Doktor Mabuse" – as well as Blake originals "Spiral Staircase" and "Garden Of Delight". Rare RCA work from Art Blakey – tracks from the Lerner & Lowe album, plus other 1957 material too! The core set is based on the music of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe – composers usually associated with the Broadway stage, brought into a whole new light here by the late 50s Jazz Messengers! The album's one of Art Blakey's more unusual outings – part of that great 1957 run away from Blue Note – but it cooks strongly with a lineup that includes Jackie McLean on alto, Johnny Griffin on tenor, and Bill Hardman on trumpet – all players who bring an unusual degree of bite to these tunes, while still reflecting the lyrical beauty within! The group sparkles and shines with the sort of brilliance and energy that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, completely transforming tunes that include "I Could Have Danced All Night", "Almost Like Being In Love", "On The Street Where You Live", and "There But For You Go I". The album's years ahead of its time – and arguably opens the door for countless spiritual jazz projects like this in the 70s, more proof that Blakey was a groundbreaking artist who was always opening doors for others! Blakey's own work on drums is joined by percussion from Montego Joe, Chief Bey, Garvin Masseux, James Ola, Folami, Robert Crowder, and Solomon Ilori – the last of whom would record his own record for Blue Note – and the rest of the group features Yusef Lateef on flute and tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and the great Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass – a great choice for the record, given that he was mixing together similar modes on his own records of the time. Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersFirst Flight To Tokyo – The Lost 1961 Recordings ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
Hardbop godfather Art Blakey cut some fantastic work in the studio with his Jazz Messengers group – but in a live setting, the group sometimes sound even more amazing than on record – and that's definitely the case with this unreleased live date from the early 60s! Art has a really seminal version of the group here, with three key young stars in the lead – Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano – all players who, along with bassist Jymie Merritt, helped Blakey craft some of the most memorable albums in the Blue Note catalog at the time. Yet here, as things are live, the tunes are even more stretched out – which means a lot more work from Art on the drum kit, in solos that are totally mindblowing, and really get at the complexity he can bring to his percussion – plus more pronounced work from Merritt, who's always been a hell of a bassist, but never fully gets his doe. The whole thing is fantastic – a double-length set with great sound, rescued from the vaults – with tunes that include "Now's The Time", "Blues March", "Moanin", "Dat Dere", "Night In Tunisia", "Round Midnight", and two takes on "The Theme". The first two cuts are from 1980 – from a time when the Jazz Messengers features up and coming 80s giants Bobby Watson on alto, Valery Ponomarev on trumpet, Billy Pierce on tenor, James Williams on piano, and Charles Fambrough on bass – all young musicians who'd evolve into leaders on their own in a few short years after these recordings, but who really sparkle here under Blakey's leadership! The cuts feature a great take on the Williams tune "1977 AD", and a long version of the Jazz Messengers standard "Blues March". The last four tracks feature a slightly later group – still with Fambrough on bass, but including wonderful tenor and soprano sax work from Jean Toussaint, plus trumpet from Terence Blanchard, alto from Donald Harrison, and piano from Johnny O'Neal – an equally great lineup, but in a completely different way. Art Blakey & Thelonius MonkArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk ... CD
Atlantic, 1957. Used ... $7.99
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". Blue Feather may look a bit hokey on the cover, but they sound really wonderful on the record – a sweet, smooth, funky group who were one of the best on the scene in the early 80s! The vibe here is a lot like the best Brit funk of the period – all these riffing guitars, warm keyboards, and bumping basslines on "Call Me Up" – fitting the catchy lyrics wonderfully, and setting things up for some very cool keyboard sounds too! "Let's Funk Tonight" definitely lives up to the title – a super-groovy tune that runs for almost 10 minutes in length – hook-heavy lyrics upfront, but lots of room for bass solos and all these cool spacey keyboard sounds too – so much so that the tune is more instrumental than vocal! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A great collection of funky New Orleans genius from the legendary Eddie Bo – an artist who made music in many different modes over the years in Nola, but who comes across here with a sound that's definitely in the funkiest side of his spectrum! There's lots of cuts on the collection that were only issued as funky 45s – the kind of deeply funky numbers with heavy drums that made Bo such an early favorite for the sampling scene, and which continue to give his work such a sense of urgency over the years! This isn't the slow-rolling, head-nodding side of Crescent City soul, and instead is its much funkier cousin – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Hook & Sling (parts 1 & 2)", "Check Your Bucket (parts 1 & 2)", "Funky Yeah", "The Thang (parts 1 & 2)", "If It's Good To You It's Good For You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sissy Walk", "Eddie's Rubber Band", and "Hey Mama Here Comes the Preacher". A sublime second chapter of work from Booker T & The MGs – pulled from a time when Stax Records was stepping out of the influence of Atlantic, and really opening the door to a wide variety of new soul sounds! That approach is definitely in place here – as the tracks really evolve past the early hits of the group – with more unusual rhythmic patterns, laid down by the great Al Jackson on drums and Donald Duck Dunn on bass – while Steve Cropper provides all the riffing genius on his guitar, and Booker T pushes things over the top with completely sublime work on organ! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Titles include "Rhythm X", "Hour Glass", "CB Blues", and "Charles Concept". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles BradleyBlack Velvet ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". Robert BrookinsIn The Night ... LP
MCA, 1986. Very Good+ ... $2.99
The debut album from Robert Brookins – an artist who first made waves in the group Afterbach, and who also had close ties to the Earth Wind & Fire galaxy in the 80s! This set's got a tightness that definitely belies Robert's years working in the studio for other artists – but the sound is bold enough to be his own, too – confident, yet casual male vocals served up in a prime 80s mode – almost crossover at points, thanks to the production, yet hip enough overall to keep things interesting – especially on some of the mellower, more laidback numbers! Titles include "Our Lives", "If You Only Knew", "You Got Me Runnin", "Sensuality", "Be My Weakness", "Are You Bad Enough", and "In The Night", a duet with Stephanie Mills. LP, Vinyl record album

Brotzmann/Kondo/Pupillo/Nilssen-LoveHairy Bones ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99
Pretty hairy stuff from Peter Brotzmann and crew – a set that blasts right out of the gate with some really bone-rattling noise! The album's a live set, recorded recently in Amsterdam – featuring Brotzmann on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – alongside Toshinori Kondo on electric trumpet, Massimo Pupillo on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums. The electricity in the instruments can definitely be felt on the title track "Hairy Bones" – a hard-driving tune that runs for over 30 minutes, and which really recalls the energy that Brotzmann had a few decades before, when crossing over big to new audiences around the globe. "Chain Dogs" is even longer, but starts a bit slower – but then really bursts forth with more noisy elements on trumpet and bass – some really speaker-rattling stuff! CD

James BrownGravity (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Scotti Bros/Big Break (UK), 1986. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A bit of a comeback for James Brown – a mid 80s outing recorded with Dan Hartman, who gives the record a "contemporary" sound that's definitely a great way to slide James in with the younger crowd at the time! The style's still funky, but has more street soul elements too – and the record sports guest appearances by Alison Moyet, Steve Winwood, and Stevie Ray Vaughan – and although the production is a bit stiff at points, there's some undeniable quality in James that still makes some nice moments shine through! Titles include "Gravity", "Let's Get Personal", "How Do You Stop", "Living In America", "Goliath", "Repeat The Beat", and "Return To Me". Lots of bonus tracks too – including "Living In America (12" R&B dance)", "Living In America (inst)", "Living In America (soundtrack version)", "Gravity (12" ext)", "Goliath (12" message house mix)", "Gravity (single)", and "How Do You Stop (12" ext)". Marion Brown & Dave BurrellLive At Black Musician's Conference 1981 ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1981. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A fantastic testament to the slow-burning spiritual genius of Marion Brown – a player who sometimes got eclipsed in an era of bigger avant personalities, but who really gets to showcase his talents in a spare setting like this! The live performance pairs Brown's alto with the piano of Dave Burrell – another player who's sometimes understated, but in the best way possible – and together the pair sound completely sublime – gently exploring the farther reaches of tonal space with their improvisations, and almost always keeping things in relatively soulful formation! The set features beautiful readings of two Billy Strayhorn tunes – "My Little Brown Book" and "Lush Life" – balanced with original material that includes "Gossip/Fortunado", "La Placita", "Crucificado", "Puna Mae Ole", and "Punaluu Peter".
