✨✧ David Murray Latin Big BandNow Is Another Time ... CD
Justin Time, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dang! Does David Murray ever stop re-inventing himself? We think not – and this album is great proof of that fact! The set's a really tasty batch of Latin Jazz numbers – played to perfection by Murray and a host of excellent New York musicians, working together in large group format with a sound and style that's at the peak of perfection for this sort of recording. Murray wrote all the tunes, so the album goes way past the cliches of Latin-ized standards that you're probably sick of hearing anyway – and it's steeped in a soulful approach to the genre that really grabbed our ears from the first note! Titles include "Giovanni's Mission", "Sad Kind Of Love", "Mambo Dominica", "Break Out", and "Aerol's Change". CD

Carmen LundyThis Is Carmen Lundy ... CD
Justin Time, 2001. Used ... $9.99
An amazing record – and an instant classic that hasn't been off our stereo since we bought it! The record may well be the greatest that Carmen Lundy ever recorded – and it's one of the first in years that really lets this soulful singer really do her thing. Carmen's a lot like Dee Dee Bridgewater in that she's got an amazingly soulful approach to her music when she's right on, but often gets stuck in settings that don't ever let her open up. This album corrects mistakes of other sessions by letting Carmen have full control – writing and arranging most of the record, working with brother Curtis on production, and backed by a host of friendly players that include Curtis Lundy, Bobby Watson, Victor Lewis, Ralph Peterson, Anthony Wonsy, and Onaje Allen Gumbs. The record's an instant classic – a soulful set of jazz vocals that ranks with some of our favorite of the genre, and one that will forever put Carmen at the top of our list! No overwrought standards, no cliches, no other BS – just pure and simple jazz vocals, sung with all the potential that still lurks in the genre, yet which is rarely expressed this beautifully! Titles include "All Day All Night", "This Is The End Of A Love Affair", "Better Luck Next Time", "Now That He's Gone", "Is It Love", and "Seventh Heaven". CD

Curtis LundyPurpose ... CD
Justin Time, 2002. Used ... $9.99
A wonderful set from Curtis Lundy – his third album as a leader, and a warmly intimate set that steps off of the strength of his Against All Odds album, moving into new territory, yet never losing its soul! Curtis is working here with a group that includes John Hicks on piano, Billy Hart on drums, and Steve Nelson on vibes – crafting a sound that's a bit more modern than some of his previous work, with more angles and sharp edges, yet never so many as to lose the warmth and soul that we've come to love in his work. The record's incredibly fresh, with a sound that reminds us of some of Bobby Hutcherson's best experiments in the early 70s, pushing into territory that's distinctly Lundy's own. Titles include "Pas De Trois", "Blues For JA", "Carmen", "Walk In Serendipity", "Snake Eyes", and "Shape Shifting". CD

Cecil Taylor & Italian Instabile OrchestraOwner Of The River Bank ... CD
Enja/Justin Time, 2003. Used ... $11.99 14.99
One of the most complex Cecil Taylor records we've heard in years – and that's saying a lot, given the usual complexity of his music! Taylor plays piano and vocalizes a bit – but he's also tied strongly here to the Italian Instabile Orchestra – a large lineup of varied horn, string, and percussion players – all of whom vocalize a bit themselves – working with Cecil to create these amazing textures in sound – every bit as free as his unfettered solo recordings, but played here with these layers of depth that really amaze us! The CD features one long piece, composed by Taylor – running for about an hour in length, and divided into seven movements. CD

✨✧ Adam Rudolph's Moving PicturesDream Garden ... CD
Justin Time (Canada), 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Thoughtfully-crafted work from Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures – a group who draw partially from the global influences of Rudolph's past, but also come across with some more angular modern jazz touches! Players include Graham Haynes on cornet and flugelhorn, Ned Rothenberg on clarinet and flutes, and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – and other members of the group bring in a host of more exotic instrumentation – including oud, tarija, bamboo flute, and cajon – in addition to Rudolph's own host of world percussion. Tracks are sometimes quite sort and thematic, at other times more long and ambitious – and titles include "Oshogbo", "The Violet Hour", "Mood", "A Vision Of Pure Delight", "Cousin Of The Moon", "Scintilla", "Happiness Road", "The Sphinx", and "Walking The Curve". ✨✧ John PattonSoul Connection ... CD
Nilva/Justin Time, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
An obscure session by John Patton, and a great one too! The set was recorded sometime between the end of Patton's successful run at Blue Note, and before he was rediscovered, and brought back out into the light by John Zorn and other younger players who appreciated his skill. The style of the album's great – in a mode that really recalls the farther-reaching organ work of Pattons' later Blue Note years, not exactly as modern as players like Larry Young, but clearly inspired by a freedom that was coming into use of the organ at the time. The group's an all-star one, too – with Grachan Moncur making a rare organ jazz appearance, Melvin Sparks on guitar, Grant Reed on tenor, and drummer Alvin Queen (who's label the set was recorded for), laying down some dexterous rhythms that remind us a bit of Hugh Walker's work on some of Patton's best Blue Notes. Includes a great reading of Dusko Goykovich's "Soul Connection", plus versions of Moncur's "Space Station" and "The Coaster". And oddly, this one turns up less than most of Pattons' albums from the 60s! CD

✨✧ David MurrayWaltz Again ... CD
Justin Time (Canada), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
An ambitious project from David Murray – one that features an expanded string ensemble working with his core quartet – performing a set of original material that includes the long "Pushkin Suite" and some shorter numbers that revel in Murray's own soulful spirit. While the "Pushkin Suite" is supposedly the main focus of this effort, we're more partial to the shorter tracks – as they dance, glide, and soar with the freely exploratory spiritualism we love so much in Murray's earlier years – and get past the headier mode of the longer suite. Titles include "Waltz Again", "Dark Secrets", "Steps", and "Sparkle" – and players include Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums. CD

Justin Time, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rich tapestry of Afro-Caribbean rhythms – and one of the most compelling albums we've heard in years from David Murray! The set features an expanded group of percussionists, vocalists, and other instrumentalists – fronted by lead solo stars David Murray and Pharoah Sanders – all jamming freely in styles that bring together bits of African, Haitian, and Cuban rhythms – forging them into a bold new sound for the project! Tracks are all quite longish, and given the previous skills that both Murray and Sanders have exhibited in such settings, they're more than up for the challenge of working with such a heady group of players! Titles include "Go To Jazz", "Gwotet", "Djolla Feeling", "La Jwa", "O Leonso", and "Ovwa". CD

Justin Time, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums we've heard from David Murray in many years – a beautifully spiritual set that really reminds us of the promise we first heard in his music decades ago! Murray's working here with a lean, soulful ensemble that includes Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – all in a groove that has plenty of sharp edges, but which is also nicely inside – very focused, and with a sense of depth that's really wonderful! All tracks are originals by Murray – penned with the sensitivity of an older soul jazz recording – and two numbers feature lyrics by Ishmael Reed, sung by Cassandra Wilson on guest vocals. Titles include "Sacred Ground", "Transitions", "Family Reunion", "The Prophet Of Doom", "Believe In Love", and "Banished". CD

✨✧ Russell GunnEthnomusicology Vol 3 ... CD
Justin Time (Canada), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Severely funky jazz from trumpeter Russell Gunn – working here in an electrified mode that reminds us a bit of recent work from Nicholas Payton or Roy Hargrove – but which comes off sounding a lot hipper overall! The set's got a bouncing, bass-heavy groove that's clearly rooted in older funk traditions – but it's performed by Russell with a host of cutting edge up and comers, in a style that's pushing lots of new styles and sounds of its own! Gunn himself plays acoustic and electric trumpet, as well as keyboards – and he's joined by Stefon Harris on vibes, Nick Rolfe on Fender Rhodes, and Kebbi Williams on tenor and electric tenor. The set's got lots of extra space for added instrumentation that includes work on alto, percussion, pro tools, turntables, and voice – and the overall sound somehow manages to come off with a lot harder-hitting edge than other recent projects of this sort! Titles include "East St Louis", "John Wicks", "No Separation", "The Critic's Song", "Yesterdays", and "Stranger Fruit". CD

✨✧ Laurindo AlmeidaViva Bossa Nova!/Ole! Bossa Nova ... CD
Capitol/American Jazz Classics (Spain), 1962/1963. Used ... $11.99
A sweet little album from Laurindo Almeida and his "Bossa Nova All Stars" – not a group of Brazilian musicians, and instead a hip set of LA players who really help make the set sparkle! There's a bit more jazz here than on some of Laurindo's other Capitol records of the time – a great 60s update to the groove he first forged in the 50s with Bud Shank – featuring even more swinging rhythms, inventive instrumentation, and a slightly larger group with players who include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Howard Roberts on guitar, Bob Cooper on tenor, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Justin Gordon on flute, and Shelly Manne, Chico Guerrero, and Milt Holland on percussion! The use of organ is especially nice – a warm wave of sound on top of some great bossa rhythms – and titles include "Naked City Theme", "Teach Me Tonight", "Desafinado", "Mr Lucky", "Theme From Route 66", and "One Note Samba". Classic pop bossa material from the Capitol scene, featuring a host of groovy jazz players backing up the breezy guitar of Laurindo Almeida. Although the album's not totally authentic bossa material, it does have a nice swing to it, and is easily as pleasant as some of the Verve sides from the same time. Titles include "O Barquinho", "Recado Bossa Nova", "Acapulco 1922", "Alley Cat Song", and "Days Of Wine & Roses". CD

EMI (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Grooviness galore – and a wonderful selection of obscure psychedelic numbers from the deep deep vaults of EMI Records! The cuts here are mostly of British late 60s origin, and they feature a really fuzzed-up approach to pop – complete with odd production techniques, off-kilter arrangements, and a pretty heady brew of guitar, bass, drums, and tripped-out vocals – all served up with top-shelf sound, as proof that even on the bigger labels of the 60s, lots of younger artists were still taking plenty of chances! The package has complete track-by-track notes in a full color book with photos, labels, and album sleeve images too – and the CD features 25 tracks that include "Dandelion Seeds" by July, "Real Life Permanent Dream" by Tomorrow, "Hold On" by Ipsissimus, "Dog Presides" by Paul Jones, "Model Village" by Pennyh Peeps, "Towards The Skies" by The Gods, "Strange Walking Man" by Mandrake Paddle Steamer, "Mr Commuter" by Mike Proctor, "William Chalker's Time Machine" by The Lemon Tree, "Barricades" by The Koobas, "Please Leave My Mind" by Herbal Mixture, "World Of You" by The Aerovons, and "Monday Morning" by Tales Of Justine. Red Hot & Ra (Meshell Ndegeocello)Magic City ... LP
Red Hot, 2024. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Maybe the coolest album so far in the Red Hot series – even amidst the unique Sun Ra subgroup – as the album's the brainchild of Meshell Ndegeocello, and comes together with all the complex soulfulness of her own recent albums! Back in the 90s, Meshell was a great but more mainstream soul artist – and over the years, she's developed into a really fascinating talent – one able to reach out with a complex blend of jazz, funk, and soul elements – woven into patterns that are always very much her own – a musical legacy that the great Sun Ra might have appreciated! Ndegeocello leads a very diverse lineup here – playing bass and keyboards, and singing a bit – next to other players who include longtime Arkestra giant Marshall Allen on alto and EWI, plus Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Christopher Bruce on guitar, Darius Jones on saxes, Daniel Mintseris on keyboards, and Justin Hicks, Pink Siifu, Kenita Miller, Nio Levon, and Hanna Benn on vocals. The album channels Ra's spirit through territory that's very much Meshell's own – and titles include "Yet Differently Not Mars Hall", "El Soul The Companion Traveler", "The World Of Shadow", "Reproductive Manatees/Sunny Said Up", "Bedlam Blues", "#9 Venus The Living Myth", and "Departure Guide Of The 7 Sisters". ✨✧ Ambrose AkinmusireOn The Tender Spot Of Every Calloused Moment ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album from trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire – a set that really kicks his career up to the next level, and which is easily the most powerful record he's ever given us! The music finds Ambrose in many moods, all of them righteous – sometimes blowing hard and fierce in a small combo, sometimes issuing out more personal statements in a more stripped-down setting – working with players that include Harish Raghavan on bass, Justin Brown on drums, and Sam Harris on piano – plus vocalist Genevieve Artadi on one especially beautiful number that features Akinmusire on Fender Rhodes! We've loved the music of Ambrose for many years – and this is one of those faith-rewarding sets that always makes it so wonderful to follow the career of any key jazz musician – as we hope you'll also find on titles that include "Roy", "4623", "Moon", "Tide Of Hyacinth", "Cynical Sideliners", and "Mr Roscoe". Heady sounds from a variety of different scenes – served up here in a compilation that was one of the first to turn western ears onto the sounds of the east! The music is a fuzzy blend of sounds from Southeast Asia, Korea, India, and even Turkey – and the package was one of the first times we'd ever heard some styles that have now become much more common in the psych market – the kind of groundbreaking overseas moments that we love on labels like Guerssen/Pharaway or Finders Keepers! Titles include "Simla Beat Theme" by The Fentones, "Gonul Sabreyle Sabreyle" by 3 Hur El, "26 Miles" by The Quest, "Korean Titel A2" by Jung Hyun & The Men, "Istemem" by Erkin Koray, "Magic Colors" by Teddy Robin & The Playboys, "A2" by Cambodian Rocks, "Blind Bird" by The Mpos, and "You Know What I Mean" by Justin Heathcliff.
