Junius PaulIsm ... LP
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
A fantastic record from the contemporary Chicago scene – one that both gives bassist Junius Paul his first showcase as a leader, and underscores the richly collaborative energy in which the musician works! The set was recorded at various points in the Windy City underground – with Paul at the help of a shifting lineup that includes Makaya McCraven on drums, Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Justin Dillard on piano and keyboards, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Isaiah Spencer on drums, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Tomeika Reid on cello – with most musicians also handling other instruments too, in a continuation of an AACM legacy – on a record that's then edited by Makaya McCraven, in the best International Anthem mode! The music is jazz, but of the most forward-thinking type – and titles include "Ma & Dad", "Fred Anderson & A Half", "Twelve Eighteen West", "Georgia", "Spocky Chainsey Has Re-Emerged", "The One Who Endures", "Baker's Dozen", "View From The Moon", "You Are Free To Choose", "Paris", "Collant Denier", and "Sprouts". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration (4LP set) ... LP
PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. Sealed 4LP ... $54.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Kahil El'ZabarWhat It Is ... CD
Delmark, 2013. Used ... $11.99
One of the freshest albums in years from Chicago percussion legend Kahil El'Zabar – the recording debut of a great little combo he's been heading for the past few years – and a group who would have been right at home during the more progressive 60s years at Blue Note! The sound here is wonderfully soulful, but in ways that are different than some of Kahil's other records – thanks in part to the strong use of tenor from Kevin Nabors – a player who helps give the record a bold bite right upfront, with tones that hearken back to some of the late 60s' best soulful and spiritual moments – played with more forward focus than some of El'Zabar's other reedmen. The album's definitely got an AACM pedigree, but it's more straightforward, too – and we mean that in a good way – often pushed by modal elements that seem to also give Kahil a rich new sort of energy in his drumming too. Justin Dillard plays some great Hammond, Fender Rhodes, and piano – and the group's completed by Junius Paul on bass. Titles include "Song Of Myself", "What It Is", "Impressions", "The Nature Of", and "Kari". CD

Makaya McCravenIn These Times ... CD
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Maybe the most majestic album that Makaya McCraven has recorded to date – and that's really saying a lot, given the power of his music on previous records! This time around, the group is large, and the performance is more organic than some of the more mixed/produced sessions that Makaya has given us – and great as those records have been, there's a sense of power here that really places McCraven strongly in the Chicago legacy of the 20th Century – a jazz spectrum that includes Eddie Harris, Ramsey Lewis, Charles Stepney, the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and so many other musical giants! The mix of instrumentation is almost like some Chess/Cadet session from the end of the 60s – but Makaya still adds in some samples and electronics next to his acoustic work on percussion, drums, and a variety of other instruments – next to Jeff Parker on guitar, Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Junius Paul on bass – all tremendous players and strong leaders in their own right – working here to make a special sort of magic with McCraven. There's other voices on the set too – more violins, cello, alto, tenor, piano, and other sounds – on titles that include "So Ubuji", "Seventh String", "This Place That Place", "The Fours", "Dream Another", "High Fives", "The Knew Untitled", and "In These Times". Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings E & F Sides ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
A really great idea for a record – and one that echoes the same "E & F" mode that Makaya McCraven brought to his previous album! The approach here is as unique as the drummer himself – in that McCraven went back to the sessions for the core album, and pulled out material that's recast into a completely different record altogether – not a remix project, or a batch of alternate takes – but new music from the ground up, as Makaya continues his groundbreaking style of using live jazz performance as the basis for a record that's eventually cut-up and reassembled! Performances were recorded in Chicago, Cali, Brooklyn, and London – with players who include Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Dezron Douglas on bass, Ashley Henry on Fender Rhodes, Nubya Garcia on tenor, Jeff Parker on guitar, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on violin, Carlos Nino on percussion, Junius Paul on bass, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor – an amazing lineup that gets plenty of space to shine in the hands of Makaya. Titles include "Everybody Coo", "Mak Attack", "The Hunt", "Beat Science", "Kings & Queens", "Traveling Space", "Butterss Fly", "Universal Beings Part 2", "Her Name", "Half Steppin", and "The Way Home". ✨✧ Kahil El'Zabar with Dwight TribleFollow The Sun ... CD
Delmark, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best albums in years from percussionist Kahil El'Zabar – a really wonderful set that features lots of great guest vocals from soulful singer Dwight Trible! Kahil's sung himself on other records – and does so on two tracks – but Dwight's presence here is really amazing, and the group provides Trible with some of the sharpest musical accompaniment he's had in years – a really dynamic setting that's filled with soul and spirituality, thanks to work from Ari Brown on tenor and piano, Junius Paul on bass, and Kahil himself on drums, kalimba, and earth drum. The album also features another excellent guest – the Chicago legend Duke Payne, who worked famously in the 60s with Odell Brown & The Organizers – heard here on second tenor, and on some ultra-cool bagpipes too – played in a mode that's like Rufus Harley! Two titles feature El'Zabar vocally duetting with Trible – "Great Black Music" and the coolest version of "Grandma's Hands" you'll ever hear, done with deep acoustic basslines and percussion – and other titles include "Inner Heart", "Follow The Sun", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Our Journey", and "Up Your Mind". ✨✧ TenseiConstellate Instrumentals ... LP
Tokyo Dawn, 2019. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great title for this record from Tensei – as the Chicago duo really find a way to create a strong constellation in sound, by opening the door to help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its title, too – with this swirling blend of funk and soul, all given sort of a special twist through the record's impeccable production – which never leaves anything out there to sound too obvious, or too derivative – as the sonic space of the record shifts between instrumental contributions from Makaya McCraven on drums, Greg Spero on Fender Rhodes, and Junius Paul on bass. The instrumentals version really works as a standalone set, focused on the cosmic soul-jazz-hip hop atmosphere, but keeping the worldless backing vocals in the mix in spots giving it such a heavenly vibe – not unlike Makaya's work in that regard. "Baby Blast Off", "40000 Harpedelic", "78ths Joint", "Spero Alone", "Curtis Kuti", "Tiempo Dificil" and "Telemetry". LP, Vinyl record album
