Joy DenalaneBorn & Raised ... CD
Nesola (Germany), 2007. Used ... $9.99
Nice work from Joy Denalane – crisp, popping hip hop soul with great vocals from Joy – and kind of an uptempo, anthemic vibe on most tunes with a few choice slower tunes! Joy's been making waves in the soul scene of her native Germany for years, but Born & Raised is our first exposure – and it's a very nice set that's with a vibe that recalls the best modern soul with hip hop underpinnings, ala Mary J Blige – but Joy also looks back to Aretha on some excellent slower tunes. Titles include "Change" featuring Lupe Fiasco, "Be Real", "Heaven Or Hell" feat Raekwon, "One In A Million", "7 Year Itch", "Caught Up", Stranger In This Land", "Start Over", "Born & Raised", "Soweto '76-'06", "Sometimes Love" and more. Joy DivisionAtmosphere/She's Lost Control ... 12-inch
Factory/Rhino, 1980. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $18.99
"Atmosphere" is the a-side, and it's a great little cut – but we'll always love this single for the fantastic "She's Lost Control" – a tune that's catchy, but also damn spooky – starting out with these cool Martin Hannett electronic pulses, then moving into this raw, building guitar line that really sends the vocals home! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Joy DivisionCloser (180 gram clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Factory/Warner, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Much as we love the legendary debut from Joy Division, we love this second album even more – as the whole thing's a perfect realization of their genius – and such a strong step forward, it still pains us to remember that singer Ian Curtis was taken from us all too soon, and the group never got to fully move past this moment! Everything that made the first record great is here – but there's also a more cohesive approach to both the song structure, and the overall album presentation – so that the landscape of darkness we first viewed on Unknown Pleasures comes into even greater focus here – as the songs follow one another in a beautifully logical order, and the slight refinements in production make all the best elements of the musicianship – especially the bass and drums – even more powerful than before. Titles include "Twenty Four Hours", "Heart & Soul", "Decades", "Colony", "Passover", and "A Means To An End". LP, Vinyl record album
(40th Anniversary limited edition pressing – on heavyweight clear vinyl!)

Joy DivisionLove Will Tear Us Apart (long, short)/These Days ... 12-inch
Factory/Rhino, Early 80s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $18.99
Maybe the group's most famous song – and it wasn't even included on any of their original albums, which makes owning a 12" single of the cut that much more wonderful! The song is served up here in two versions, and really benefits from the sonic brilliance of a large piece of vinyl – as does the tremendous "These Days" – equally catchy, but much more dark and moody! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Joy DivisionStill ... LP
Factory, Early 80s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $43.99
The last full chapter in the legacy of Joy Division – an album that ws issued in the wake of the untimely early death of Ian Curtis – a special double-length set that brought together all the unreleased material at the time! The package features a number of tracks that the group were working on before Curtis died – material that still shows a much more Joy Division-centric aesthetic than the sound of New Order to come – and the package also features live material from 1980 – an interesting change from the studio sound of the group (even though the whole set was still produced by Martin Hannett!) Features the group's famous cover of "Sister Ray", plus "Glass", "The Only Mistake", "The Sound Of Music", "Exercise One", "Dead Souls", "Walked In Line", "Ceremony", "Shadowplay", "Transmission", "Decades", "Digital", and "New Dawn Fades". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing, in the gatefold "folder" cover, with embossed text. Labels are lightly aged. Cover has light staining and waviness along the bottom.)

Factory, 1980. Very Good (pic cover)... $16.99
One of those Joy Division 12" singles that's definitely worth owning as a separate piece of wax – because the raw power and moody energy of "Transmission" just flows perfectly out of the fast-spinning single with its extra-deep grooves! "Novelty" is great, too – one of those dark, almost scolding Ian Curtis gems – hiding bitterness that really drives the whole thing along! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Later UK pressing in the un-embossed cover, with some heavy ring and edge wear.)

Joy Of CookingJoy Of Cooking ... LP
Capitol, 1971. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Sweet folk rock from the Bay Area scene of the early 70s – a record that's very much in keeping with some of the criss-crossing of styles going on at the time – mostly rock, but with touches of folk, a consciousness of rootsier blues, and an overall laidback and hippie-warm style! The record features some great vocals from Toni Brown and Terry Garthwaite – often singing together in a sweetly melodic style with some nice harmonies. Titles include "Brownsville/Mockingbird", "Hush", "Too Late But Not Forgotten", "Dancing Couple", and "Did You Go Downtown". LP, Vinyl record album

Maximum JoyStation MXJY ... LP
Antarctica Starts Here, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.98
The only full album ever issued by Maximum Joy – a highly rhythmic group whose singles were one of the real bright spots of the post-punk years! At some level these guys move through some of the darker territory of The Pop Group, but with more of the groove of The Slits or ESG – and like those groups, they've got a female singer in the lead - the lovely Janine Rainforth – which really sets them apart, as does some of Rainforth's work on clarinet and violin! The group revels in moody production, scratchy guitar, heady basslines, and odd little sonic elements that seem to drift in and out of the mix on their own sort of whim! At times, there's almost a Factory Records spirit to the work, but the overall sound is more straightforwardly political and progressive – in keeping with Maximum Joy's links to the Rough Trade camp. Titles include "Searching For A Feeling", "Do It Today", "Where's Deke", "Temple Bomb Twist", "Mouse An Me", and "All Wrapped Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Philophon (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A gospel group, but one with a very groovy vibe – as they hail from Ghana, and mix plenty of soulful elements into their music! Alogte Oho handles the lead vocals, and is backed by a small group of female singers – and while the back/forth approach is rooted in American traditions, there's plenty more going on here – not just complicated rhythms that really keep things moving, but also instrumentation that has a great horn section,a nd some really cool keyboard and organ lines on a number of tunes! If you can't understand the lyrics, and even if you can, you'll think of the record more as a great contemporary bit of Afro Funk – with titles that include "Fom Se Mam", "Sala An Songa", "Ma'algo", "Sandana Fom", "Allema Timba", and "Mam Yinne Wa". Cadillac (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99
Genius work from trumpeter Harry Beckett – the kind of easygoing electric work that he seemed to do better than anyone else on the British scene of the early 70s! The record's got a laidback approach that's really unique – one that pits Beckett's trumpet against guitar by Ray Russell, keyboards from Brian Miller, and additional bass, drums, and congas – the last of which are used to underscore the sound nicely. The sound shows almost no influence from the electric trumpet jazz of Miles Davis, Donald Byrd, or Freddie Hubbard – and is instead uniquely Beckett's own bag – almost always slightly funky or grooving, but never too much so – and neither too out nor too jamming, with a lanquid quality that's totally great. Titles include "No Time For Hello", "Bracelets Of Sound", "Rings Within Rings", and "Not Just Tomorrow". CD

Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ... $6.99 12.98
A bundle of soul from Freddie Hubbard – one that has him blowing beautifully over full arrangements from Bert DeCoteux – the 70s super-soul maestro who really brings a new sound to Hubbard's music! The style's a bit smoother than other Freddie albums of the time, but still really great – a wonderful plenty of his well-timed, well-punctuated work on trumpet with warm grooves supplied by Bert – filled with instrumentation that includes David T Walker on guitar, Ernie Watts on sax and flute, Azar Lawrence on tenor, David Garfield on keyboards, and even Dorothy Ashby on flute. Really driving percussion, and some great horns as well – the former served up by KOG, who also delivers some fantastic vocals on the set – the latter from The Zongo Brigade, who work in a great mix of funky rhythms, jazzy horns, and some sweet keyboards too! The set's very different than most Afro Funk albums in recent years – with an unbridled style that's clearly driven by the energy of KOG, whose expressions really have things leaping out on most tracks right from the start – then keep things warm all the way through. Titles include "For My Money", "Medowo", "Imela", "Agoro", "Mona Lisa", "Transmission", "Mad Up", "Dr Mensa", "Sahara", and "Suro Nipa". CD

Columbia, 1988. Used ... $11.99
A fusion set, but one that's got all those sharp, dark edges that Wayne Shorter developed over the years – served up here with a depth that's maybe much more in the far-reaching fusion styles of Columbia Records in the 70s than some of the more polished efforts of the time! The core combo here features some great keyboards from Patrice Rushen – who's strongly returning to jazz, and playing with a lot more dynamism than on her soul records from a few years before – and the rest of the quartet features Nathan East on bass, and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums – augmented at times by guest work from Herbie Hancock and Geri Allen. With all that keyboard talent in place, you can bet there's a strongly electric vibe to the set – but Wayne more than matches that energy with his own work on saxes, especially his sharp-edged soprano. Dianne Reeves sings on the track "Someplace Called Where" – and other titles include "Causeways", "Cathay", "Over Shadow Hill Way", "Anthem", and "Daredevil". CD

Columbia/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
70s magic from Percy Faith – two albums presented here in their quadrophonic mixes! Clair is a really wonderful album from Percy Faith – part of a handful of sweet 70s sides that really had him sounding a lot more groovy than before! The album almost has a 70s soundtrack vibe at times – with a mix of electric elements amidst the fuller orchestrations – all in a nicely compressed way that's handled with the sort of production that must have made a record like this a real treat for the quadrophonic generation! There's a bit of vocals at times – mostly wordless – and the tunes themselves really shape the grooviness of the album – with titles that include "Clair", "Ben", "Sweet Surrender", "2001", "I Can See Clearly Now", "Summer Breeze", and "Superfly". Joy has the Percy Faith sound opening up in warm, mature modes for the 70s – still a fair bit of strings, but also maybe more of that careful couching of sound that could make 70s easy listening so different from the sound of a decade before! Some of the tunes here are a nice surprise – and include pop and soundtrack numbers that further take Percy into fresh territory – titles that include "Shaft", "This Way Mary", "Without You", "Diamonds Are Forever", "The Summer Knows", "An Old Fashioned Love Song", and "Gypsies Tramps & Thieves". CD

A fantastic record from vibist David Friedman – spare, hip, modern, and very moody! Friedman's playing vibes and marimba alongside David Samuels, who plays the same – and this twin-vibes approach sounds fantastic – especially as the record has no drums, just additional bass, plus flute by Hubert Laws – a very loose, open style that comes across with a completely unique sound! The approach is super-dope for any fan of laidback 70s vibes – and the tracks are never too free or way out, just gliding with this airy quality that's really wonderful – one of the best demonstrations of Friedman's great talents on record. Titles include "Truce", "Nyack", "Brite Piece", "Island", and "Saraband". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lol CoxhillCoxhill On Ogun (Joy Of Paranoia/Diverse) ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1977/1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing chapter in the career of British saxophonist Lol Coxhill – two completely wonderful albums recorded for the Ogun label in the mid 70s! The feel here is similar to Coxhill's seminal albums for Virgin a few years before – jazz that's free, but never too "out" – working in a lovely way to explore sound and tone with a sense of joy and whimsy – often making a brief nod to more traditional modes, but very much in its own spirit. There's a sense of wonder here that we'd almost compare to the best Rahsaan Roland Kirk work for Atlantic – and Coxhill plays soprano sax throughout, joined by players that include Michael Garrick on electric piano, Ken Shaw on guitar, John Mitchell on percussion, Veryan Weston on piano, and Colin Wood on cello. The CD features the full tracks from 2 albums – Joy Of Paranoia and Diverse – and titles include "Joy Of Paranoia Waltz", "The Wakefield Capers", "The Cluck Variations", "Loverman", "Perdido", "Diver", and "Divers". Back in the day, Sergio Mendes was best known for the core energy of his groups – the legendary Brasil 66 and Brasil 77 – but in the 21st Century, Sergio's also become quite a collaborator – part of a legacy that's definitely continued here on a set of tracks that features work from guests who include Common, Roge, Cali Y El Dandee, Sugar Joans, Shelea, and Buddy – as well as more familiar Brazilian talents Guinga, Hermeto Pascoal, and longtime vocalist Gracina Leporace! The style bounces along in a mix of modern R&B and older Rio elements – but there's also maybe a wider pan-Latin vision to the whole project, much more so than some of Mendes other 21st Century albums – proof that the man is alive and well, and always still working hard to build a bridge between cultures. Titles include "Love Came Between Us", "Sabor Do Rio", "Bora La", "La Noche Entera", "Samba In Heaven", "Catch The Wave", "Times Go By", "This Is It", and "Tangara". 2CD edition features 16 more tracks – the "official soundtrack" of Key Of Joy – with titles that include "Lamento", "Reza", "Pais Tropical", "So Many Stars", "Tonga", "Fanfarra", "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Consolacao", and "Primitivo". RCA/Beatball (Korea), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The second of two albums by the obscure Glass Prism – and a set that's a lot looser and trippier than the first! This time around, the group turn in all their own songs (their debut featured words by Edgar Allen Poe) – and they really turn up the fuzz on the guitar, and mix it nicely with the organ – which, along with romping drums and basslines, almost gives these guys the energy of a jazz rock group – although without any horns at all. The tunes are wonderfully groovy – and have this formative quality that makes us think that these guys might have grown into something much bigger in the 70s, had they gotten the chance. Victor (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Don't let the "rock" in the title fool you – as this is a jazz album all the way through, but one that has Japanese tenorist Takeru Muraoka taking on some of the hipper rock songs at the start of the 70s! Muraoka has this raspy, almost fuzzy tone at times – mixed with heavy drums, organ, and guitar – all with a fantastically powerful sound that reminds us of some of the grooviest work by Steve Marcus, Tom Scott, or John Klemmer during the same period – slight psychedelic currents, but always with a result that's more soulful than rockish – a very cool blend of elements that could have come from the Chess/Cadet studios at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Kozmic Blues", "Whole Lotta Love", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "Try", "Stranger To Himself", "It's Too Late", "Eli's Coming", and "Music For Gong Gong". CD

One of the best showcases we've heard for the tenor sax work of Ivo Perelman in years – an open, blue-tinged performance that seems to open up his horn with a lot more soul than we remember! Of course, some of the credit certainly goes to the other partners on the date – Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Bobby Kapp on drums – a lineup that benefits from the long, lovely association between Shipp and Parker, who have returned to some tremendous new heights in recent years – and whose work alone on the record is more than enough to win us over. Perelman comes as maybe a bit of icing on the cake – but of the sweetest variety – on titles that include "Bliss", "Ebullience", "Rejoicing", "Elation", "Ecstasy", and "Exuberance" – all titles that definitely describe the performance! Cadence, 1978. Near Mint- ... $24.99
The first album ever on the Cadence Records label – and a doozy of a date that set the tone for greatness to come! Trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah takes off wonderfully here – working with a sextet that includes Vincent Chaney on french horn, Chico Freeman on tenor and flute, Muneer Abdul Fatah on cello, and Rashied Sinan on drums – all players that share his same mix of spiritual and free styles equally – which really helps them find some great space together on the long tracks in the set! Side one features the 22 minute "Happiness Is Forever" – a tune that begins with almost a modal ode to joy, then breaks into some very freewheeling passages, only to recover its path right at the end. Side two features an amazing take on "Inchworm" – one that owes a debt to Coltrane, yet clearly has its own flavor as well – plus a version of Charles Mingus' "Self Portrait In Three Colors". Monty AlexanderHere Comes The Sun ... LP
MPS/BASF, 1973. Very Good ... $6.99
Beautiful sounds from pianist Monty Alexander – and a record that really has him finding his own groove! Monty had recorded often in the 60s, and usually mixed his Caribbean roots with a bit of American soul jazz – but it really took the MPS label to help him find a spot to set himself free and really open up with his own sort of voice! Alexander soars with a sense of joy and imagination right from the very first note – getting help from Eugene Wright on bass, Duffy Jackson on drums, and the great Montego Joe on congas – in a mode that's maybe Monty's contribution to finding a Caribbean sound in jazz piano the way that work of Randy Weston and Dollar Brand were towards a more African-oriented heritage. The colors and phrasing of Alexander's touch on the keys is already pretty darn unique, and the rhythmic impulses send things home even more – on titles that include a great funky remake of "Here Comes The Sun" – plus "Where Is Love", "Montevideo", "Brown Skin Girl", and "So What". Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt go head to head in this classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George Brown on drums – and it's way heavier than the usual Verve "meeting of the masters" session, and feels more like a record that should have been issued on Prestige or Argo. Both players are impeccable, and the solos stretch out for a long long very live time. Capitol, 1989. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
The Beasties' masterpiece – and one of the original nightmares for sampling opponents everywhere – the cut & paste hip hop classic Paul's Boutique! The Dust Brothers unapologetic way of weaving very famous samples with soul, funk and film score obscurities would steal the show if not for the infectious, boisterous rhymes of the Beastie Boys – they couldn't possibly have cared less about alienating the massive frat boy fan base built with License To Ill, and it's a joy to behold. It's one of those mindblowing pop transformations on par with the Beatles (who the Beasties and Dust Brothers were so brazen to sample several times on this album) and the Beach Boys on the pop maturation scale from earlier hits to later artistry – even if the wild lyrics and deft back & forth rhymes by the Beasties aim to be the goofy antithesis of maturity. From classic rock dinosaurs to soul and disco classics, from the Jaws score to "Dueling Banjos", it all finds it's way into the beatcraft – and both mainstream pop and underground hip hop are better now because of this record. Tracks include "Hey Ladies", "Shake Your Rump", "High Plains Drifter", "Shadrach", "Johnny Ryall", "Eggman", "Car Thief", "What Comes Around", the "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" suite and more. Lytton's a joy, as always – with percussive elements that have a crackle that almost reminds us of some of his electronics, too – clearly a sonic sensibility inspired by that side of the spectrum – rounded out by deeper, more soulful sounds from the bass of Roebke. Mindblowing early work from pianist Paul Bley – two side-long tracks that really show the pianist stretching out and expanding his mind – quite far from even his few modern moments on record in years before! The group here is very well-suited to the spirit of the set – Mark Levinson on warmly rounded bass, and Barry Altschul on some freer, bolder drums – balanced with the freer lines on Bley's piano, but at a level that really shows that underlying sensitivity that made Paul so different than so many other avant jazz musicians of his generation. This is especially true on the sublime reading of Bley's "Mister Joy" – a mindblowing journey in music – but it also comes through on "Blood" as well. CD

An album that explodes with life, soul, and energy right from the very first note – a jazz set from keyboardist George Burton, but a record that weaves in lots of different strands along the way – with a sense of imagination that's certain to make Burton's music something to really keep an ear on for years to come! Yet already, this record is more than enough – and grabs us in a way we're not usually grabbed – as George balance his own bold energy on piano and Fender Rhodes with occasional vocals from a female singer, work by Tim Warfield on soprano sax, Chris Hemingway on alto, and Andy Bianco on guitar, and a trio of different drummers who really know when to kick in and propel the album forward! Burton is never content to just lay down a solo, or swing a groove – and there's a larger sonic palette of soul to the record that has to be heard to be understood – yet even the few straighter jazz numbers are pretty amazing too. Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". Eliane EliasIllusions ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1987. Used ... $13.99
Great early work from Eliane Elias – Brazilian-influenced rhythms, warm piano lines, and a surprising undercurrent of soul! The set features Eliane strongly out front on acoustic piano – working with some elements of other American jazz at the time – kind of that post-fusion sense of soul that came from the electric years of other players, brought back into the acoustic keyboard as the 80s scene moved on. But Elias also brings in some of her best Brazilian elements too – really just in the way the keyboard lines come together with a sense of joy and life – and other players include Stanley Clarke and Eddie Gomez on bass, Al Foster and Steve Gadd on drums, and Toots Thielemans on a bit of guest harmonica. Titles include "Illusions", "Moments", "Iberia", "Chan's Song", "Through The Fire", and "Choro". CD

FallRoom To Live – Undilutable Slang Truth! (2LP pressing with bonus tracks – marble vinyl pressing) ... LP
Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
The greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". 2LP version also features bonus material – live tracks recorded in 1982 and 1983, with versions of "Room To Live", "Words Of Expectation", "Hard Life In The Country", "Joker Hysterical Face", "Town Called Crappy/Solicitor In The Studio", and "Detective Instinct". Jose FelicianoFeliciano! ... LP
RCA, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
An amazing record! By all rights, this shouldn't be so good – but it's an incredible album of haunting tracks that really has us coming back again and again over the years. The formula is simple: Jose plays late 60s pop tunes on acoustic guitar, and sings them in his spacey soulful voice. Backings are by George Tipton, plus a jazz combo made up of Jim Horn, Ray Brown, and Milt Holland – but it's Jose that really makes the whole thing amazing! His style of presentation is like anything else we can describe – filled with sadness and soul, but enough joy to keep moving forward. He takes tracks like "Light My Fire", "In My Life", "Sunny", and "California Dreamin", and transforms them into an amazing document of the darkness hidden behind the sun of southern California. "California Dreamin" is especially amazing – and Jose's version is one of the best soul songs of all time! LP, Vinyl record album

Phil FranceSwimmer ... CD
Gondwana (UK), 2017. Used ... $1.99
Beautiful keyboard lines from Phil France – served up here in a mode that's partly jazz, maybe partly more laidback – and often in the kind of slow-building style we love on other records on the Gondwana label! There's almost a meditative vibe to the music – somewhere in the Carlos Nino/Miguel Atwood-Ferguson mode, but maybe more compact – as Phil's keyboards are mixed with light use of violin and cello, plus some additional sound elements as well – all in a way that makes us almost think that France would be great at scoring soundtracks, although these instrumental tunes have a nicely changed-up sense of complexity overall. Much deeper than just the usual "soundscape" album you might mistake this one for – with tracks that include "December", "Animator", "London Park Hotel", "Kubrick", "Joy Of Brass", and "The Swimmer". Marvin GayeMidnight Love ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Marvin Gaye's last album ever – and a sensuous batch of grooves that almost return him to the sound of Let's Get It On! The style here is a bit more modern, but the sound is still great – a smoother approach to soul than most of Gaye's contemporaries at the time, recorded in a way that has the vocals soaring majestically over the top of the backings! Slight undercurrents of funk spice things up somewhat, but still avoid any mainstream 80s groove cliches – and Marvin wrote, arranged, and produced the album himself (although with a bit of help from Chicago organist Odell Brown on the hit "Sexual Healing"!) Titles include "Sexual Healing", "My Love Is Waiting", "Third World Girl", "Turn On Some Music", "Joy", and "Midnight Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marvin GayeSuper Hits ... LP
Tamla, 1960s. Very Good ... $6.99
Kind of an ultimate Marvin Gaye hits compilation – issued in 1970, with one of the most badass Motown covers of the time! The album's got a famous image of Gaye as a black Superman – flying high on the cover of a set that's filled with some of his best 60s work for Motown – and for some reason, there seems to be a few more cuts in the package than you might get in the usual hits collection of the time. Every title's a classic – and tunes include "Pride & Joy", "That's The Way Love Is", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", and "Hitch Hike". GazzaraOne ... CD
Irma (Italy), 1995. Used ... $6.99
Italian pianist Francesco Gazzara is one of the best electric keyboardists behind the 90's wave of acid jazz to come out of Italy, and this first album on Irma is a tight batch of jazzy tracks with lots of Fender Rhodes, Moog, and Hammond keyboard lines. As usual with these Italian releases, there's some vocal cuts that are a little weak, but the instrumental ones more than make up for them, and the record's got a nice sweet electric keyboard jazz sound in keeping with the best releases on Irma. James Taylor joins the band on keyboards on one track, and the set list includes "Keep Yourself Together", "Sexuality", "Joy In Your Eyes", "Change", "Our Man In Rio", "West 42nd Street", "Just Some Philly Sound", and "Gato". This CD version is remastered from the LP, and includes some remixes and one extra track! CD

Michael Gibbs/Gary BurtonFestival 69 (3CD set) ... CD
Turtle (UK), 1969. New Copy 3 CDs ... $19.99
A fantastic combination of modern jazz talents – the groundbreaking Gary Burton Quartet, and the young avant ensemble of trombonist Mike Gibbs! The set begins with a fantastic performance by Burton's group – heard here in a lineup that has the guitar of Dave Pritchard sharing equal chromatic roles with Burton's beautiful vibes – alongside sublime bass from Steve Swallow, and drums from Bill Goodwin. Gary solos on a great version of "Chega De Saudade", and other tunes include "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan", "Arise Her Eyes", "And On The Third Day", "Ballet", and "Portsmith Configurations". CD 2 features a full set by Gibbs' group – in a rare recording before their debut album – with a lineup that includes Kenny Wheeler and Trevor Barber on trumpets, Alan Skidmore and Ray Warleigh on saxes, Chris Spedding on guitar, and Chris Pyne on trombone with Gibbs. Tracks are all long, and really beautiful – and include "Nowhere", "Walter L", "Tanglewood 63", and "Sojourn/June The 15th 1967". There's also vibes on these performances, but the notes are a bit unclear – so we're not sure if they're by Burton, or Frank Ricotti – who also worked with Gibbs. Burton's group returns on the funky track "Doin The Pig" – and then CD3 features a full second performance from earlier in 1969 – with a group that also includes John Surman on soprano, Mike Osborne on alto, Henry Lowther on trumpet, Jack Bruce on bass, and Ricotti on vibes. Titles on this set include "Feelings & Things/June The 15th 1967", "Sweet Rain", "Family Joy Oh Boy", and "Fly Time Fly Sigh". CD
