✨✧ Journey Into FearJourney Into Fear Collected Works Vol 3 – Issues 15 to 21 – September 1953 to September 1954 (hardcover) ... Book
PS Artbooks (UK), 1953/1954. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title's a great one for this creepy horror comic of the 50s – as the stories have this stark, spooky feel that definitely helps you take a journey into fear! The publication was maybe a bit more low-budget than some of its contemporaries – but that also makes some of these stories even more spooky – almost as if the writers and artists were moving quickly, and didn't have time to candy-coat their work – so just threw their offbeat ideas and strange stories on the page as-is! Unlike some of the other volumes in this wonderful batch of books from PS Artbooks, the publication doesn't list the creators – possibly because they're lesser-knowns – but we can say that there's fantastic 50s comic artwork throughout – all in the unbridled pre-code style – with lots of ghouls, bats, skeletons, and other fearsome figures – often mixed with illicit love, crime, and other sordid themes. Hardcover book features seven rare issues of this legendary comic – all in full color too! Book

AmbianceInto A New Journey ... CD
Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 18.99
A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". ✨✧ Alice ColtraneJourney In Satchidananda ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 About June 16, 2021
Arguably the most classic Alice Coltrane album on Impulse – and a strong group effort that features some great work from Pharoah Sanders! Coltrane leads two different small combos on the record – both with Sanders on saxes, plus either Cecil McBee or Charlie Haden on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums – plus assorted percussion from Tulsi and Majid Shabazz, and some really enigmatic work on oud by Vishnu Wood! Tracks are long and drawn out, and open with the beauty of a field of flowers meeting the dawn – as Alice plays with a sound that's gentle and poetic, but which also has some wonderfully dark undertones. Titles include "Stopover Bombay", "Isis & Osiris", "Shiva-Loka", and "Journey In Satchidananda". CD

Norman ConnorsRomantic Journey ... LP
Buddah, 1976. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A warmly romantic journey from the stellar Norman Connors – but a set that's also got a fair bit of spiritual jazz undercurrents too! Norman's at that perfect Starship point in his career – giving equal space to the vocals and instrumental passages on the record – at a level that perfectly sums up his unique, sophisticated blend of jazz and soul! The sublime Eleanor Mills sings on some key cuts – a singer we love from her earlier New Jersey soul sides – and Prince Phillip Mitchell handles the male leads, with a level of class that even goes beyond his own records. Reeds are handled by Gary Bartz and Pharoah Sanders – both players who bring in a nice sort of depth to the record – and Sanders really sparkles on a remake of his classic "Thembi", taken in a mellow stepping tone, as well as a reading of Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango In Paris". The whole album's wonderful – and other titles include "Once I've Been There", "Romantic Journey", "Destination Moon", "For You Everything", and "You Are Everything". LP, Vinyl record album

Love/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $35.99
Trumpeter Terumasa Hino at a level that's quite different than most of his early work in Japan – recording in New York, and using a very spiritual approach – one that's clearly influenced by some of the other players in the session! The album features one long track – a bit improvised, and almost free at times – but also given a strong sense of direction, too – that balance between completely unbridled expression and structure that can make some of the best spiritual jazz sessions so great! Hino's on trumpet, and also plays some flugelhorn – and other players include Steve Grossman on tenor and flute, Pete Yellin on alto and flute, Dave Liebman on alto and tenor, Olu Dara on trumpet, Bob Moses on drums, Dave Holland on bass, and Mike Garson on piano and Fender Rhodes. Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesDoo Wop Days & Their Journey To The Top – 1953 to 1962 ... CD
Jasmine, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes are certainly best-known for their huge Philly hits of the 70s with Teddy Pendergrass on vocals – but the group had a very long legacy that includes countless indie recordings in the years before their hooked up with Gamble & Huff – a good deal of which are included in this set! As most folks know, Harold Melvin was never the lead singer – maybe more of a creative force in the group, which shifted often over these early years, but continued to grow and mature – with styles that begin in maybe more of a postwar jump/jazz sort of mode, then evolve into styles we no more clearly as doo wop and early soul. The set opens the door very wide – so much so that there might be a few tracks that aren't fully established as having Melvin's involvement – and the package features 25 titles in all, including related tracks issued by Todd Randall and Bernie Williams, who were with the group. Titles include "My Hero", "The Letter", "Hey Doc", "The Retribution Blues", "With This Pen", "If It's Our Destiny", "She Is Mine", "Pucker Your Lips", "Devoted To You", "O Holy Nite", "WPLJ", and "While I'm Away". Alan MunsonOne Man's Journey – 1972 to 1979 ... LP
Modern Harmonic, Mid 70s. Sealed ... $11.99
Alan Munson might look like some sort of tough biker on the cover, but the music within is surprisingly sensitive – really well-penned singer/songwriter material, done with a style that's personal, and also quite unique! There's a vibe here that almost reminds us more of an artist of this nature from the UK scene in the early or mid 80s – a slight sense of distance from his topics at times, but also this almost world-weary sensibility – not in a way that makes you feel like Munson doesn't care, but maybe that he's found a way to hide himself slightly, maybe to ease some of the pain of his lyrics. Titles include "In The Rain", "I Need A Change", "Fences", "A Visit From A Friend", "Sail Away Forever", "Late Night Morning Coffee", and "For A Long Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Q OrchestraJourney Through Sounds ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2010. Used ... $8.99
Less of an orchestra than a tight mix of funk, soul, Latin, and clubby elements – all fused down nicely, and mixed up by Dimitris Nassios! There's plenty of older elements in the mix – wah wah guitars, funky horns, conga beats, and more – all wrapped up with some tight contemporary production that keeps things nice and lean, while still bringing up the funky elements inherent to the music! The whole thing almost comes across as some sort of remix of 70s cuts, but has its own voice as well – and titles include "Boca Que Engana", "So What", "Alley Trap", "My Way", "Ritmo Diabolico", "Not The End", and "Spread Your Wings". ✨✧ Lee RitenourCaptain's Journey/Feel The Night/Rio ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... $10.99 19.99
Sweet fusion from the great Lee Ritenour – three classic albums on two CDs! First up is Captain's Journey – a masterful fusion set from guitarist Lee Ritenour – one that expands his sound a bit more than usual by adding in vocals on a number of tracks – but in a way that really gets at the mainstream soul influences that bubble through his jazz work! The set features key vocal appearances from Patti Austin, Tom Baylor, and Bill Champlin – all singers who really know how to respect the instrumental side of a tune, too – which is great, given that the record also features keyboards from Dave Grusin and Patrice Rushen too. Titles include "That's Enough For Me", "Sugarloaf Express", "What Do You Want", "Matchmakers", "Morning Glory", and "The Storm". Feel The Night is a key album from a time when Lee was still very much at the top of his game! Although tight overall, the album's never too commercial to be cloying – and Lee's approach here is a great example of the way that mainstream 70s fusion managed to balance all its best elements nicely – from soulful rhythms on the bottom, to sharp-edged solos on the top, to some of the smoother studio glue that holds the whole thing together in the middle! Ritenour plays a range of different guitars – and other players include Don and Dave Grusin on keyboards, plus keys from David Foster as well – plus saxes from Ernie Watts, piano from Joe Sample, and drums from Steve Gadd. Patti Austin sings a bit on the set, but the album's a mostly-instrumental affair overall – and titles include "Feel The Night", "Market Place", "Wicked Wine", "French Roast", and "Midnight Lady". Rio is smooth jazzy fusion from Lee Ritenour – a classic set that was originally only released in Japan, part of the underground Japanese Fusion movement of the late 70s, famous for groove hounds for that added level of soul that often wasn't showing up in American releases at the time! The album was recorded in both Rio and LA – with work by a mixture of Brazilian and American fusion players, including Chico Batera, Oscar Castro Neves, Alex Acuna, Don Grusin, Dave Grusin, Steve Forman, and Marcus Miller. Includes the smooth funk classic "A Little Bit Of This & A Little Bit Of That", plus the cuts "Simplicidad", "Rainbow", "Rio Funk", "San Juan Sunset", and "Ipanema Sol". CD

Trans-Kalahari QuintetLong Journey Home ... CD
Ansonica, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Nice work from the Trans-Kalahari Quintet – a group that mostly resides in Botswana, but which also has a vibe that reminds us of South African jazz traditions from back in the 70s and 80s! The tunes all have a strong sense of flow – a rhythmic pulse that engages other southern African musical traditions, while still staying strongly in the jazz side of the spectrum with the overall instrumentation – a lineup that features Zakes Gwaze on guitar, Lekofi Sejoso on electric piano, Andrew Chinganga on alto, Matt Dacso on tenor, Brian Nyakaurukwa on bass, Arthur Mengwe on drums, and Dingalo Mpolaise on percussion. Hmmm . . . That's a bit more than a quintet, but we'll more than forgive these guys for the warm sound they bring to tunes that includes "Zake's Feelings", "Pulse Of The Kalhari", "Lobola", "Khola", "Sunday Breeze", "Tune For Miriam", and "Funkganga". J-Rocc takes on Jazzman Records – the mighty mixer from Stones Throw, handling a host of rare funk and soul gems from previous Jazzman reissues! The set's very heavily mixed – so that J-Rocc's really going to town with the rare singles included – cutting them up, spinning them out, and really bringing fresh new flavors to the tunes – something you'll appreciate, even if you've got some of the original versions! There's no set list for the collection, but there's plenty of niceness throughout – and the whole thing has a very Stones Throw sort of feel – but with a Jazzman level of classic cuts for grounding. Vol 1 covered the 90s and Vol 2, appropriately, takes a solid look at the 00s, with great tracks by Peven Everett, Paul Deep, Boddi Satva, Black Coffee, Papo Sanchez and more. VariousPraise Poems 7 – A Journey Into Deep Soulful Jazz & Funk From The 1970s ... CD
Tramp (Germany), 1970s. New Copy ... $14.99
This series keeps blowing us away with each new entry – taking us into musical territory that's completely its own, in a way that few other compilations have ever done! The cover is a bit misleading, as the territory here is the farther reaches of hip soul and groovy jazz in the 70s – territory that's slightly spiritual, but not in the more familiar modes of spiritual jazz – as most tunes have a bit of a groove, and the compilation balances instrumental and vocal tracks in this really great way – almost with a compressed approach to righteousness that really packs a heck of a lot of spirit into a shorter sort of track! The whole thing is filled with music we never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Wear Me Out" by The Kats, "Low Down Soul" by Jerry Sandifer, "Summertime" by Promotion Soul Concern, "He Does It Better' by Marva Josie, "Brazilica" by Stevens Scott & Dee, "Sometimes" by Penn Central, "Love In Disguise" by The New Hope Project, "A Blind Man Who Can See" by Edmund Sullivan, "She Shut Me Down" by The M+M, "Flower Song" by Shalynn, and "So Far Down" by James Kelly Duhon. Armenian grooves, but done with plenty of familiar funk elements as well – including lots of sweet keyboards and some hard-driving rhythms that makes more than a few of these tracks perfect for the clubs! There's not much in the way of notes with the package, and the set is hardly comprehensive – but it does a great job of bringing together tunes we never would have heard otherwise – tracks that all have Armenian lyrics, but a groove that's very universal – disco moments on a few cuts, heavier 70s funk on others – served up on titles that include "Taparoum Enk" by Harout Pamboukjian, "Tears On My Eyes" by Avo Haroutiounian, "Ammenian Serdov" by Marten Yorgantz, "Karoun E Yegel" by Jozeph Sefian, "Ors Kedz Hed Antzav" by Adiss Harmandyan, and "Im Sireli Ashdarag" by Eddy Jeghelian. An excellent collection of rare jazz grooves – the special kind of tracks that effortlessly mix up influences and styles, with a result that makes each and every number a real standout in the set! This is the third volume in the series, and the mix of music is wonderful – tunes from artists who are definitely jazz, and who have sophistication that goes way past familiar funky modes – into territory that's often far-reaching, and influenced by spiritual modes – even though all the tracks have a great little groove! There's plenty of fantastic modal moments in the collection, and although the core energy of the package comes from the 70s underground jazz scene, there's also some great bits from other periods too. Titles include "Nepal" by Bjorn Alkes Kvartette, "Probuzeni" by Jazz Celula "Dawn" by Sangram, "Manteca" by Phineas Newborn Jr, "Pan African Ballet Music" by Karlton Hester & The Contemporary Jazz Art Movement, "Hasta La Victra Siempra" by Copa Salvo, "Impressions" by Stafford James Ensemble, "Middle Passage" by Tyrone Jefferson, "Aladdin's Carpet" by Beaver Harris, and "24 Carat" by Gabor Szabo. A really heady record from British drummer Brian Bennett – an artist known for both jazz and funky sound library work – here stretching out in a mode that really fits the image on the cover! The tunes are longer than some of Bennett's earlier sound library material – almost a mix of progressive energy with jazzier funk – a lot cooler than the disco reference in the title might imply! The set's got tremendous keyboards from Francis Monkman – who handles all the spacier elements, while the drums of Bennett works the rhythms with bass from Alan Jones – on long tracks with plenty of complexity, but also plenty of groove! Titles include "Voyage", "Solstice", "Chain Reaction", "Pendulum Force", "Air Quake", and "Ocean Glide". 2CD version features a full CD of bonus material – including 7" single mixes of "Pendulum Force" and "Ocean Glide" – and working mixes of every track on the album. The long-awaited first full length set by Rebirth – and a record that more than lives up to all the brilliant promise the group has displayed on their first few singles! Rebirth are an amazing combo – a fully-formed funky soul ensemble with a vision that's incredibly deep – and a sense of power, poise, and cosmic energy to match the best 70s work of Earth Wind & Fire. The grooves here are often laidback and smooth – but never slick – forged out of loosely snapping percussion, warmly flowing keyboards, and these amazingly well-crafted jazzy changes – of the sort that really put the group miles above most of their contemporaries. Take it from us, this record's an instant classic – the kind that you'll be playing for years and still finding magic! ✨✧ Sunset Love/Inner SanctumPsychedelic Moods Part 2 – Journey Thru Inner Space With Sunset Love & Inner Sanctum ... CD
Cicadelic, Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groovy psychedelia from a pair of groups – Sunset Love, made up of players from Texas and New Mexico – plus Inner Sanctum, made up of actors & musicians of an off Broadway musical! The project was largely conceived and put together by Mark Barkan of The Deep (which recorded the original Psychedelic Moods album) and The Freak Scene – as something of a psychedelic concept album that would journey into the various psyches of the mind. The Sunset Love tracks feature groovy harmonies and chiming guitar and organ psych backdrops. Tracks include "Change", "Tribute To Kay", "Little Children", "Reach Out", "A Man In The Park", "Push", "Green Hippie", "Innocence Dies Young On Our Street" and more. The Inner Sanctum tracks have the feel of a genuine lost psychedelic classic, with a group of Greenwich Village actors and musicians pulling it off perfectly with and with raw edge that feels like it could come unhinged at any point, despite warm, groovy harmonies. Tracks include "The House Of Yesterday", "Id", "Hydro-Pyro", "The Man Who Shot Your Mother", "Purple Floating" and more. CD

Very high concept work from Stevie Wonder! The record is, in fact, about the "secret life of plants" – partially used as a soundtrack for a film of the same name, but also acting as kind of a storybook in itself! Stevie's exploring a wide range of plant life and plant themes on the set – often in a way that has his keyboards taking center stage in little symphonies of soul that unfold like the petals of a flower in the morning sun – and which stand out as quite different from some of his vocal work, marking him as a talented electronic musician in his own right. Many tracks do have lyrics, too – often with themes of growing, seeding, and other garden metaphors that are easily translated to the human experience. Titles include "Secret Life Of Plants", "Outside My Window", "A Seed's A Star", "Race Babbling", "Black Orchid", "Send One Your Love", "Tree", "Come Back As A Flower", and "Ai No Sono". CD

There's a nicely simple sound to most of the tracks here – a style that takes house music back to the core elements of its roots without getting trapped in cliche or overplayed tracks – just simple beats, keys, and maybe a dash of vocals – plus usually a core element that develops as the track rolls on, changing slightly through the minimalist progression of the tune. 2CD set features a both mixed and unmixed disc – with titles that include "The Numbers" by Rodney Baker, "Bring U Up" by Romanthony, "Drum Drum" by Jovonn, "Let Your Body Talk" by Ace & The Sandman, "I'll Never Let You Go" by William S, "I'm So Deep" by Vincent Floyd, "Pump That Body (deep house mix)" by Mr Lee, "Motivation Song" by G Strings, "Whispers" by Ron Allen, "Rain Forest" by Lowkey, and "Feel The Fire/Urban Culture" by Naomi Danielle. ✨✧ AmbianceInto A New Journey ... CD
Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Impulse, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A definite journey in blues from the legendary Freddie King – as the guitarist was really burning up the clubs across the US at the time of these recordings – playing with energy that may well top his well-received studio albums during the same stretch! There's not much in the way of details here, but that's OK with us – as the quality of the recordings is great, and the 3CDs pack in a heck of a lot of music, all of it really showing that stunning maturity that Freddie had hit in just a short span of time since his initial recordings for King Records. The package features 32 tracks in all – and titles include "Boogie Funk", "Ain't No Sunshine", "San Ho Zay", "Sen Sa Shun", "Rock Me Baby", "Woke Up This Morning", "Signals Of Love", "TV Mama", "Look Over Yonder Wall", "Messin With The Kid", and "King's Thing". A later album by Pharoah, but one of his best! The record is a very tight set of tracks that includes the amazing jazz dance anthem "You've Got to Have Freedom", a killer groover that will stay in your head for days after you've heard it! The rest of the material's equally great, and the record has a solidity that matches all of the soulful spirituality of his Impulse years with the a tightness that really sends the message home! Pharoah's working here with a great set of soul jazz musicians – players that include Eddie Henderson, John Hicks, and Idris Muhammad – and the double-length album's filled with great tracks that include "Think About The One", "Bedria", "Doktor Pitt", and "After the Rain". Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
British folk music got really weird and wonderful at the end of the 60s – light years from the crew cut versions of The Kingston Trio, or the twangy modes of Bob Dylan wannabees – but also very different from the more rockish directions that American folk acts were taking at the time! If anything, the British artists showed an even deeper commitment to acoustic modes – and far more ancient ones than American groups had access too – a thousand year legacy of British Isles music, but reworked into an often-trippy style would find more famous iterations in groups from Fairport Convention through Current 93, and even in the Wicker Man soundtrack as well! Most of the music here is much more obscure than those references – groups that were big in the UK, but maybe didn't have as much of an impact over here during the period – which makes this 63 track box set a real treasure trove of discovery – filled with many tunes we'd never heard before, and put together in a very special way. Titles include "Black Girl" by Mary Anne, "Till The Morning Comes" by Dando Shaft, "Roses For Columbus" by Mark Frhy, "Love Is A Funny Thing" by Spyrogyra, "Come All You Travellers" by Wight, "Willow's Song" by Nagnet, "Cruious Crystals Of Unusual Purity" by Bridget St John, "Prisoners Victims Strangers Friends" by Paper Bubble, "Gabilan" by Duncan Browne, "Meeting By The Moonlight Mill" by Dry Heart, "Silence Returns" by Beau, "Me & My Kite" by Fuschia, "The Colour Is Blue" by Country Sun, "Welcome To The Citadel" by Marc Brierley, "Garden Song (demo)" by Bill Fay, and "Upon Reflection" by Heron. An amazing slice of rare work from pianist Misha Mengelberg – caught her early in his career, but already an important modern jazz force on the European scene! The set's a live one – featuring a very sharp-edged combo with Misha on piano, Piet Noordjik on alto, Rob Lengereis on bass, and Han Bennink on drums – plus guest trumpet from Ted Curson on two long tracks! As you can imagine, we love the Curson material – and Ted always seems to sparkle in a fresh setting like this, drawing new energy from less familiar players – and stretching things out to the height of his free-thinking talents of the time. But Noordjik is wonderful, too – really hanging nicely in a balance between soulful and modern with his horn, and easily matched by Mengelberg's piano – really great to hear in a more structured setting than his later, freer records. Titles include "Driekusman Total Loss", "The Leopard", "Sugar N Spice", "Journey", and "Peer's Counting Song". CD

A lost spiritual jazz classic from pianist Nate Morgan – maybe the musician's best-remembered moment, and for good reason too! The set's got this soaring, spiritual vibe that's much more early 70s than you'd guess from the date of recording – a post-Coltrane spirit with lots of modal energy in the rhythms, carved out by Nate in these bold, dark lines on piano – and topped with some excellent work on alto sax from the great Dadisi Komolate! Both players were key figures in the under-documented LA scene of this period – and work together to make tremendous sounds on this album – on titles that include "He Left Us A Song", "Journey Into Nigritia", "Morning Prayer", "Mother", and "Study in CT". Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD set ... Out Of Stock
A heavy little set that looks at the big rise of blues modes on the UK scene in the late 60s – but one that should be thought of more as the sound of rock in transition, rather than a lavish adherence to American blues modes! In fact, half of these groups are ones that you might not think of as blues-based at all – but who, like the Rolling Stones a few years before, drew heavy inspiration from the guitar giants in the US blues scene – yet quickly took their own music in very different directions, and even different than the Stones. There's a quality here that's almost more like a pre-progressive sound at times, but also an evolution from some of the R&B and soul that the mod scene were into too – and the whole thing captures a really exciting, really revolutionary time in British music – along with a big booklet of notes on all the many groups included. The set list is great – not big hits, but lots of overlooked gems – big groups mixed with smaller, forgotten acts – with 56 tracks by artists who include Icarus, Bloodwyn Pig, Killing Floor, Free, Zany Woodruff Operation, Ten Years After, Duster Bennett, The Deviants, Alexis Korner, Dr K's Blues Band, Mike Cooper, Sam Apple Pie, Black Cat Bones, Siren, Steamhammer, Liverpool Scene, Skid Row, Stack Waddy, Heavy Jelly, Jasper, Christine Perfect, Shakey Vick, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Love Sculpture, and many others. Side one features a number of shorter Nugent-penned tunes, and side two is a slightly more complicated offering – a bit of a concept piece, with tracks that form a story over the side of the record. Notes On A Journey (Germany), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A group with a sound that you'll never be able to pronounce – but with a sound that's instantly accessible, and which goes right to the heart of the matter in a great mix of funky fusion and more rock-styled touches! The lineup is pretty straightforward – keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums – but these guys have a great way of really coming up with unusual grooves and unusual phrasings – moments that clearly have a knowledge of freer jazz, but never go that far out – and performances from musicians who clearly know the world of prog, but also keep things tighter and groovier too! In a way, the feel of the record isn't too far from the early 70s Placebo albums with Marc Moulin – but maybe less keyboard-centric than those sets, and with tight rhythmic elements that also echo some of the funky fusion of the PM Records label. Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". Roundtable (Australia), 1971. New Copy ... $32.99
A beautiful and exotic score from the great John Barry – one that never had as much circulation on record as some of his bigger hits of the time, but which is equally well deserving of praise! The music is done for Nicolas Roeg's film Walkabout – set mostly in the Australian outback – and Barry mixes these breathy orchestrations with some rootsier acoustic elements – in ways that really echo the contrast of the characters in the narrative, and remind us of the sensitivity that Barry can have at his most sophisticated moments. Three tracks differ slightly from this approach – the seven minute long fuzzy freakout "Electronic Dance", which is totally great in its own sort of way – the experimental echoey "Professional Crumble" – and the vocal number "Los Angeles", kind of a hippy dippy tune. Other titles include "The Three Of Us", "Walkabout", "The Children", "The Journey", "Stranded", and "Night In The Outback". LP, Vinyl record album

Mindblowing early work from pianist Paul Bley – two side-long tracks that really show the pianist stretching out and expanding his mind – quite far from even his few modern moments on record in years before! The group here is very well-suited to the spirit of the set – Mark Levinson on warmly rounded bass, and Barry Altschul on some freer, bolder drums – balanced with the freer lines on Bley's piano, but at a level that really shows that underlying sensitivity that made Paul so different than so many other avant jazz musicians of his generation. This is especially true on the sublime reading of Bley's "Mister Joy" – a mindblowing journey in music – but it also comes through on "Blood" as well. CD

The vibe here has some of the sound of the older group, but there's also maybe more funk and soul elements at play – given that Pietro sometimes plays sweet electric keyboards, and that the album features soulful lead vocals from Mimma Pisto – a female singer who provides English vocals for most of the tracks! The core approach is still jazz, but the vocals really give the whole thing a very personal vibe – and all songs are written by Pietro, both music and lyrics – with titles that include "Cold Blue", "The Human Journey", "Lonely Girl", "The Trip", "Breve Amore", "Murcia", "Kali", "South Shout", and "Summer Afternoon". The long-overdue formal presentation of the music of Doug Hream Blunt – a self-taught, self-styled San Francisco soul singer from the 80s – one who recorded a handful of tunes that never really saw the light of day! Doug's got an unusual style – almost more 70s soul in its earnest approach, especially the lyrics – but delivered with a lean style that certainly has some 80s elements – yet none of the heavy keyboards or more electronic modes you might expect. Instead, there's this almost earthy approach – a definite homegrown feel that makes the music really compelling, especially in Blunt's honesty through the lyrics, and unabashed way of putting the songs forward. The work lay undiscovered for years – until Doug brought some of his un-distributed albums into a San Francisco store, which eventually started the journey that led to this great reissue of his music by Luaka Bop! Columbia, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
An overlooked Dave Brubeck from the 60s – and one of his most striking sessions at the time! The album steps a bit into the Blues Roots promised in the title – but overall, it's more of a unique meeting between Brubeck's piano and the baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan – coming together here in warm, open quartet company – with a sound that's quite different than some of the Brubeck/Paul Desmond sessions of the time! Dave really sets the tone on piano – and is maybe a bit less concerned with overall jazz concepts than just laying down some expressive solo passages – and the group also features Jack Six on both acoustic and electric bass, and Alan Dawson on drums. An overlooked score from the great Roy Budd – one that we're not sure ever made it to vinyl back in the day – and which is presented here in a nicely expanded version! The music has that tense quality that made the non-groovy cuts from Budd's Get Carter score so great – and which was followed in some of his other early 70s soundtracks – which, like the music here, really shows a maturation away from the straighter jazz of Roy's roots – but still features the occasional piano solo (including electric) to remind us that he's a performer as much as a composer. There's a darkly moody vibe to many numbers – this current of sadness that's really beautiful, and which flowers often in a subtle way – on titles that include "Change Of Plan", "The Journey Continues", "Opening", "In The Woods", "Peeping Robin", "Mingle With Me", "Swept Up In Memories", "In The Office", and "Bossa Nova". An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Four soulful fusion classics from keyboardist Rodney Franklin – all together in a single set! First up is In The Center – wonderful keyboard work from the amazing Rodney Franklin – a player who sounds equally great on acoustic and electric piano! This album does a wonderful job of mixing them both – showing Rodney's more sensitive side on a few acoustic numbers, but then really taking off in a much more groove-based mode for the electric ones – which have a soaring, spacious style that's in that best blend of fusion and soul that was going down at Columbia in the late 70s – but with some spacier Bob James touches too! Most of the cuts were arranged by Byron Olsen, who's got an equally sensitive ear as Franklin – and although there's a bit of vocals on the record, most of the focus is on instrumental grooves – especially Rodney's work on the keys. Titles include the classics "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Spanish Flight", and "On The Path" – plus "Yours", "Life Moves On", and the extended "Spring Suite". You'll Never Know is fully-formed genius from the amazing Rodney Franklin – one of the best keyboard stars to emerge from the late 70s scene! Franklin's got a great talent for balancing influences from jazz and soul in ways that are similar to contemporaries George Duke and Bobby Lyle – and like both of those players, he still stands strong in jazz, but makes some key nods to soul music on this set – adding in a bit of vocals where needed, and moving into some R&B-drenched fusion lines that all sound pretty darn hip! As on previous records, Rodney plays both acoustic and electric keys – blending them wonderfully for a very deep sound – and the group behind him features some especially nice work on reeds, which bring sharper edges to some of the best tracks on the set. There's a wonderfully deep feel to the whole thing – way more than you'd expect for a major label release at the time – and titles include "Felix Leo", "The Watcher", "The Groove", "Journey", "You'll Never Know", "Return", and "Parkay Man". Next is the self-titled Rodney Franklin – tremendous work from Rodney Franklin – one of our favorite soulful fusion players from the end of the 70s! The album's a keyboard delight through and through – and Rodney plays both acoustic and electric piano, often on the same track – which creates this nicely expanded sound that works well with the album's tight arrangements! There's a fair bit of soul in the mix too – some rhythms that make a few numbers great groovers, courtesy of Tom Tom arrangements – and some other full moments handled by Patrick Williams. Titles include a wonderful version of "Windy City" – the cut you might know from a classic Carl Davis recording – plus "On The Path", "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Life Moves On", "Creation", and "In The Center". Endless Flight is a brilliant mix of jazz, soul, and fusion – smoothed together nicely, but never in a way that's slick or commercial! Franklin's got a keen ear that lets him sit on both sides of the fence wonderfully – in a way that so many other players tried in later years, but never managed to do without losing their groove or selling out too much. Part of the strength of the album is the way that it mixes together acoustic and electric keys from track to track – deepening the spirit of the album through a good sense of pacing and mood, and also offsetting vocal tracks with some key instrumental numbers. Tom Washington produced and heavily helped in the arrangements – and titles include "Vibrations", "Benetta", "Cancion Para Mi Mama", "Dance Tonight", "Endless Flight", "Return To The Source", "Mensaje De Dios", and a surprisingly great funky take on "Hill Street Blues". Includes one bonus track – "The Groove (single version)". CD

Blue Note, 2009. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
Great work from Robert Glasper – one of our favorite new artists on Blue Note in years – a hell of a great piano player, with a fluid groove that just gets better and better with each new record! Glasper has a way of warming us up right away – sliding into a compelling piano line that holds us rapt, and really takes us on a journey – a bit like the best work of Bheki Mseleku back in the 90s, but with an undercurrent of funkier New York modes too! Half the record features Robert in trio format – playing both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – and the rest of the set moves into "experiment" tracks that bring in Casey Benjamin on saxes, plus some electric bass, and very funky drums from Chris Dave, who also plays on the trio numbers. Mos Def makes a vocal appearance on one track, and Bilal appears on two more – but our favorite grooves are always from Glasper's keyboards, especially his acoustic piano. Titles include "Downtime", "59 South", "Butterfly", "4Eva", "No Worries", "Yes I'm Country", and "Open Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent trippy soundtrack – to a film we'd love to see, and which starred Charles Aznavour, Ringo Starr, John Astin, James Coburn, John Huston, Richard Burton, and Marlon Brando! The crazy outing is accompanied by a great Dave Grusin score that includes lots and lots of heavy guitars – quite different from his usual bag, and a nice fit with the few vocal numbers in the film – some standout rock titles that go along nicely with Dave's sweet instrumental grooves! Includes "Rock Me" and "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf, "Child Of The Universe" by The Byrds, and the excellent Grusin instrumentals "Marlon & His Sacred Bird", "Constant Journey", "Spec Ra Tac Para Comm", and "Opening Night By Surgery". A bold quintet set from trumpeter Tom Harrell – one that's a bit more back to basics than some of his other recent outings – with an especially strong focus on horn solos spiraling out over the rhythms! Harrell's got a nice bit in his trumpet, and plays some moodier flugelhorn too – sounding great on the mellow numbers – and Wayne Escoffery adds his tenor to the lead too. Danny Grissett is mostly on piano, but plays some Fender Rhodes at points – and rhythms from Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums often have occasional bop inflections. Sunset Blvd, Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 28.99
The biggest collection of work we've ever seen from early southern soul star Wilbert Harrison – a set that goes way past the early hits that usually make up his tiny greatest hits features on the market – to include a whopping 70 titles that takes the Harrison journey all the way through the 60s, up to his rare mid 70s album for the Chelsea Records label! Throughout the set, Harrison's a hell of a singer – a talent who helped first forge the sound of southern soul with his R&B work of the late 50s, then moved into a strong later collaboration with New Orleans production legends Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint – who really helped Wilbert hone his groove! We've honestly not seen much of this material on CD over the years – and the set's overflowing with rare cuts that include "Girls On Parade", "Drafted", "Say It Again", "Broke", "Off To Work Again", "After Graduation", "Get It While You Can", "Sugar Lump", "The Horse", "A Woman Is Trouble", "Your Three Letters", "It's Been A Long Time", "From The Bottom Of My Heart", "My Dream", "Coming Down With Love", "Loving Operator", "I Will Never Trust Another Woman", "Going To The River", "Honest I Do", and lots lots more! Timmion (Finland), 2018. New Copy ... $24.99
Ernie Hawks looks right out of the 70s on the cover – with his long hair, fringe jacket, and fiercely-held flute – which he mixes here with some great grooves from the Soul Investigators, in a vibe that's maybe even better than classic! The album's all instrumental, and has this fantastic sound that's way different than the usual contemporary funk set – nicely trippy at times, with echo and other effects applied to the instrumentation – and a strong ear for the overall sound, not just the power of each member of the group! Hawks is often out front, soloing with a funky flute sound – but he also handles vibes, pianoman, and trombone – in a very cool lineup that also has Martti Vesala on wah-wah trumpet, and Jimi Tenor on saxophone. All tunes are original, and they're really fantastic – each the kind that if you found on a rare soundtrack or lost jazz album, you'd be willing to pay plenty to own. Titles include "Still Trippin", "Bag Full Of Miracles", "Cold Turkey Time", "Scorpio Walk", "Windy City Blues", "Journey To The Bottom", and "Street Of Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

Linda HoylePieces Of Me/The Fetch (with bonus track) ... CD
Vertigo/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of albums from this overlooked singer! First up is Pieces Of Me – the debut solo album from Linda Hoyle – an overlooked British singer, but a great one from the same generation that gave us Christine Perfect (later McVie) – graced with a similarly strong range and equal inspiration from earlier blues recordings! Yet also like Christine, Linda stretches out with these confident modes that really move past her roots – which also include previous performances with the group Affinity, although she's a much stronger solo act on her own! The core group of players on the set are more than enough of a pedigree of its quality – with guitars from Chris Spedding, drums from John Marshall, and bass from Jeff Clyne – plus piano, electric piano, production, and larger arrangements from Karl Jenkins – who really makes the whole thing sound wonderful. The set was also produced by Pete King for Ronnie Scott Productions – one more excellent piece of the pie – and titles include "Lonely Woman", "Backlash Blues", "Black Crow", "Morning For One", "Journey's End", "The Ballad Of Morty Mole", and "Pieces Of Me". The Fetch is a much different record overall, but still has Linda's great vocals at the core – done in recent years, which might be tipped off by the later cover image by Roger Dean – and done with an assortment of mellower modes served up by guitars (acoustic and electric), keyboards, and a mix of live drums and electronic rhythms. The instrumentation is relatively stripped-down, and Linda's vocals are still wonderful – almost the majesty of Norma Winstone in her later years, but more tunefully song-based – on titles that include "Maida Vale", "Cut & Run", "Brighton Pier", "The Fetch", "Snowy Night", and "Earth & Stars". A Venezuelan group, one who are living in Paris – and work here with a criss-crossing of styles that really reflect that global journey! The music definitely has echoes of older Venezuelan styles, but maybe served up in a more impressionistic version – with a dream-like quality at times, as the instruments come together airily, often getting a nicely moody vibe in the production – which was partly done by Malcolm Catto, who also mixed the record. There's a really lovely female singer in the mix – with a lightness that's almost more like a bossa vocalist at times – and the instrumentation is both electric and acoustic, but often delivered at a level that make it hard to figure out where one begins and one ends. Titles include "Lloviendo En Guatire", "Yo Soy Mi Rio", "Tonada Del Guante", "Transmutada", "Vuelve", "Pajaro", and "Machurucuto". CD

Space Echo (Italy), 2021. New Copy ... $18.99
There's plenty of Afro Funk influence in this album from Invisible Session – a long-running act who've given us a number of excellent records on the Schema label – but there's also plenty of the group's own spirit too, thanks in part to trombone and keyboards from the mighty Gianluca Petrella, who keeps plenty of the core jazzy elements intact! Leader Luciano Cantone wrote and produced the album – and brings in his own keyboards and vibes next to the rhythm programs that direct the proceedings – which also feature acoustic drums and percussion, more horn work, and vocals on two tracks – although most of the record is instrumental. In a way, the group's going for a hybrid of styles that's similar to the Latin-based albums that Gerardo Frisina has done on the Schema label – a similarly strong mix of inspirations and new expressions, on titles that include "People All Around The World Can Make It", "Hearing The Call", "Pull The Handbrake", "Journey To The East", "Mother Forgive Us", and "Ideas Can Make The World". First up is Long John Silver – a really fantastic final studio album from Jefferson Airplane – a set that's definitely different than their early work, and which shows the new directions that members would soon take on their own – but done with a vibe that's also a fantastic evolution of the core group's famous sound! The guitar work is even more complex than before – Jorma Kaukonen really blowing us away with his skills, but never in a show-offy way, as the whole thing is wrapped around these honest core rhythms that are almost a rootsier take on psyche elements – with Grace Slick's lead vocals almost coming off with a Sandy Denny quality at times. Titles include "Long John Silver", "Aerie (Gang Of Eagles)", "Twilight Double Leader", "Milk Train", "The Son Of Jesus", "Easter", "Trial By Fire", and "East Starch Mom". Thirty Seconds Over Winterland is a late live album from Jefferson Airplane – who were at the end of their journey, but whatever their personal differences may have been at the time, they still put on a helluva great rock and roll show! Thirty Seconds Over Winterland was recorded at that legendary San Francisco venue, and at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre, with the post-Marty Balin line-up of Grace Slick, Paul Kanter, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukomen – plus violinist Papa John Creach, drummer John Barbata and vocalist David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service. Man, what a great little set! The tunes all have some nice folksy touches underneath – and while we might be tempted to call this one sunshine pop, it's a bit darker and too brooding to fit the sunshine tag – and deserves well enough to stand on its own! Two rare soundtracks by Terry Riley – unsung examples of his musical genius during one of the the most fruitful periods in his career! Les Yeux Fermes features two very long tracks – each over 18 minutes long, and spun out with a spare, minimal groove that's very much in Riley's Rainbow In Curved Air mode. "Journey From The Death Of A Friend" is especially nice – with extended electric piano parts that flow, dip, and turn wonderfully. And "Happy Ending" builds a bit more slowly – with droning reed parts that almost have an Eastern feel, and remind us at times of something we might hear on Impulse Records! The score for Lifespan features shorter songs throughout – still often quite minimal, with instrumentation that includes organ, tabla, and a bit of electronics – played in a wonderfully spare mode, but always with an inherently rhythmic groove that stretches out in these beautiful patterns in sound. A modern day spiritual jazz treasure – completely wonderful all the way through, and a set you might well file proudly next to your classics from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders! The record's as epic as it promises in the title – a three volume journey in jazz, headed by tenorist Kamai Washington, who emerges here as a tremendous leader, a hell of a writer, and a rich jazz talent in every sense of the word – carefully steering a group of musicians through work that's searing, searching, and driven with a very cosmic vibe! Tunes are often modal, and never step too far outside, but always push the boundaries – and the instrumentation is a shifting mix of keyboards, piano, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums, and percussion – plus some vocal performances from Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn. You might know Kamasi from his work with Flying Lotus and Thundercat – the latter of whom plays bass on this set – but the album's very much his own, and very much jazz all the way through. The kind of record we're mighty proud to be offering – with tracks that include "Askim", "The Next Step", "Rhythm Changes", "Miss Understanding", "Leroy & Lanisha", "Re Run", "Seven Prayers", "Malcolm's Theme", and "The Message". There's a richness in vision here right from the start – music that knows what it is, where it's going, and what it can accomplish – very personal, but also very welcoming too – just the right sort of spirit to help get the nation back on track! As with the previous project, this one's double-length, but maybe feels even more fitted to the mode – as Washington leads this incredible ensemble that unifies a jazz group, orchestra, and choir – all at a level that might even top some of Alice Coltrane's early 70s albums for Impulse! There's a richness in vision here right from the start – music that knows what it is, where it's going, and what it can accomplish – very personal, but also very welcoming too – just the right sort of spirit to help get the nation back on track! Washington blows tenor throughout – and gets great help from Cameron Graves on piano, Brandon Coleman on organ and keyboards, and Miles Mosley on bass – whose work alone really seems to drive the proceedings! Titles include "Can You Hear Him", "Fists Of Fury", "Will You Sing", "Journey", "Street Fighter Mas", "The Space Travelers Lullaby", "The Psalmnist", "One Of One", and "The Invincible Youth". Comes with a bonus LP called The Choice – with the Kamasi-composed "The Secret Of Jinsonson", "Agents Of Multiverse" and "My Family", plus covers of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Ooh Child" – it's another 38 minutes of music hidden in the center of the cover! LP, Vinyl record album
(The bonus LP is hidden in the middle section of the foldout cover – you'll need to tear the perforated seam to find this hidden gem!)

ECM, 1980. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A set that has Weber working with great reeds from Charlie Mariano – alongside keyboards from Rainer Brunighaus and drums from John Marshall, who also plays percussion too. Titles include "Bali", "A Dark Spell", "The Last Stage Of A Long Journey", and "No Trees He Said". Mariano really gives the records a nice bite – a bit more than usual for ECM! LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny WernerBeyond The Forest Of Mirkwood ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $16.99
The Mirkwood in the title is a reference to Middle Earth – maybe a nicely fantastic tag to mark the special quality of this solo album from pianist Kenny Werner – although the proceedings are much more personal than epic – and very much in the best spirit of the Werner's fluid lyricism on the keys! The tracks are all originals, and hold us completely rapt from the very first note – almost painterly in approach, with an open sense of structure, but never too much freedom either – that special place that Werner could sometimes hold as a musician who came into the world after barriers were knocked down, but who also knew when to put them up at just the right points. Titles include "RCs", "Perilous Journey", "Bell's Bounce", "The Hobbit", "Conquest", and "The Ooold Ranger". CD

Mike WestbrookRelease ... LP
Deram/Audio Clarity (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A rarity from 1968 – Mike Westbrook's 2nd album, and a seminal work in the development of his messed-up large group style. On the outside, this is a big band recording, featuring a lineup of great Brit players that includes John Surman, Mike Osborne, Paul Rutherford, and others. Yet although Westbrook has clearly been influenced by modern large group arrangers like Gil Evans and Mingus, he's also throwing in a lot of New York avant ideas here, mixed with some of the brilliant cultural crossover styles that were brewing in London at the time. The record's tough to describe, but it's got an amazing mix of styles that rumbles through a range of material that includes originals like "The Few", "We Salute You", and "Take Me Back" – plus odd covers like "Sugar", "Girl From Ipanema", and "Lover Man". An amazing extended journey that never lets up for a second! LP, Vinyl record album

Robert WyattHis Greatest Misses ... CD
Domino, Late 70s/1980s/1990s/Early 2000s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The title's a bit of a joke – given that in all his many decades of music, Robert Wyatt never really had any hits – although he's continued to have a profound influence on audiences for many many years! Wyatt first started out in Soft Machine, but a freak accident forced him to refigure his physical reality – and he emerged in the 70s as one of the most unique songsmiths of his generation – a poet in both words and sound, working a more personal, compressed version of the early prog sounds that he'd inspired – with a style that was lean enough to survive decades of musical changes – many of which still found Wyatt at the forefront of the underground! This double length set is a great testament to that long musical journey – packaged with cover art done by Robert at age 6 – and packed with gems that include "Solar Flares", "At Last I Am Free", "Little Red Robin Hood Hit The Road", "I'm A Believer", "Last Will & Testament", "Heaps Of Sheeps", "Worship", "PLA", "Foreign Accents", "Mister E", "Alien", and "Shipbuilding" – the last of which was almost a hit when covered by Elvis Costello! Neil YoungYoung Shakespeare ... CD
Reprise, 1971. New Copy ... $15.99 18.98
The title might be a bit presumptuous, but the album presents a setting that maybe showcases the poetic style of Neil Young even more than some of his classic studio albums of the time – a live solo date, and one that really brings a new sort of quality to some of the era's more familiar tunes! Young has a moody darkness that's echoed by the image on the cover – and although he later recorded in this mode more often, this concert is one of the earliest examples of Neil standing solo in the spotlight – really bringing a lot of himself to readings of "The Needle & The Damage Done", "Old Man", "Ohio", "Sugar Mountain", "Journey Through The Past", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Man Needs A Maid/Heart Of Gold", and "Cowgirl In The Sand". Mothers (Frank Zappa)Just Another Band From LA ... LP
Bizarre, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $13.99
A key record in showcasing Frank Zappa's blend of complicated compositions and all-out jamming – that mix of hard rock and serious songwriting that would direct his energy for most of the 70s – yet still pretty darn raw at this point! The album's a live one – with some of the same great spontaneous energy of the Fillmore set, but even less silliness – even amidst the album's longer songs and weirdass lyrics! The set begins with the extended "Billy The Mountain" – definitely a journey in music – then rolls into "Call Any Vegetable", "Eddie Are You Kidding", "Magdalena", and "Dog Breath". VariousAfrica Airways 4 – Disco Funk Touchdown 1976 to 1983 (with bonus download) ... LP
Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. VariousBubblerock Is Here To Stay – The British Pop Explosion 1970 to 1973 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 30.99
A fantastic collection of work from the UK scene at the start of the 70s – a treasure trove of pop cuts from the time, most of which never made it across the Atlantic to our neck of the woods – and which represent a whole different world of music than you'd know from the classic rock and prog albums that usually represent the period! Instead, these are cuts that were cooked up in the studio in search of a hit – some by names that worked strongly in the 60s, others by new groups – some of whom only existed as a name on a label – but all in search of fresh sounds, groovy lyrics, and a way of putting over a tune that spoke volumes about the studio changes and advances taking place around the UK scene at the time! A number of cuts here have production that might be vaguely in glam territory, while others change up the way that vocals and guitars work together, and others evolve past Brit pop modes of the 60s – embracing psych or hard rock elements, but in a subtle way. As with other Cherry Red/Grapefruit collections of this nature, the whole thing is a stunning journey through music that we'd never have heard otherwise, and never in this much detail – presented with a big booklet of notes on all the crazy cats within – to support 85 tracks by artists who include Paintbox, Simon Turner, Mr Bloe, The Weathermen, Fumble, Posse, Gingerbread, Majority One, Jonathan King, Marmalade, Clifford T Ward, Stud Leather, Paul Gabriel, Autumn, St Cecelia, Rick Price, The Piglets, Kincade, Sweet, The Sad, Gumm, The Angelette, Grumble, Jungle Jim, Shag, Bubblerock, Harmony Grass, Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs, Stardust, Bill Fay, Pete Dello, Buggy, David Essex, Peter Kellern, Fickle Pickle, Touchwood, and many others! Heavenly Sweetness (Netherlands), 2013. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
Digital music in a physical realm – a great little project that collects together a range of groundbreaking sounds from the online music scene – then puts them together in a well-presented compilation! The music here is all pretty darn fresh – a wicked batch of 21st Century soul, hip hop, nujazz, and more – all the sort that might have been issued on labels like Compost or Sonar Kollektiv a decade ago, but which hardly makes it on record these days! Yet thanks to the great efforts of Heavenly Sweetness, these grooves are getting some great exposure – almost like catching a great slice of Gilles Peterson's radio show. 2CD package features both volumes 1 & 2 – 29 titles that include "Drum Talking" by Mo Kolours, "Grandma" by Bobby Blunt, "Fall In Love" by Badbadnotgood, "Hold On" by KRTS, "Una Peripecia" by Buddy Sativa, "Journey Through My Mind" by Bug, "Conflict Of A Man" by Erimaj, "Kalimba Song" by Abjo, "Controlled Feelings" by Opolopo Voltage, "Where You Gone" by INT, "Journey To The Shore" by Dopegems, "Muscles" by Bonnie Banane, "Freak Out" by Natronix, "YBMJ" by Monkeyrobot, "Dealing" by Up High Collective, "Paintball" by Monster Sneaker, and "All Matter" by Modlee & Vlooper.
