✨✧ Josef KOnly Fun In Town (2LP black & gold vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Postcard/Disques Du Crepuscule (Belgium), 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A seminal set from the Scottish scene in the post-punk years – the legendary first album by Josef K! The impact of Only Fun In Town is well known – as the group instantly made a name for themselves with hard-edged guitars and a jagged sense of rhythm that equally echoed sounds coming out of the Manchester and Leeds scenes at the same time – but the record still has a strong, special sort of vibe that's kept it a favorite round these parts for years – and which makes it one of the best-remembered records on the Postcard label. Titles include "Crazy To Exist", "The Angle", "Forever Drone", "Heart Of Song", "16 Years", "Sorry For Laughing", and "Citizens". This great 2LP version features bonus material from singles and John Peel sessions – including "The Missionary", "Chance Meeting", "Radio Drill Time", "Final Request", "Heaven Sent", and "Heart Of Song". JazzanovaPool ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
It feels like quite some time since we've last heard from Jazzanova – a group who were continually exploding our musical horizons back at the end of the last century, and who really seem to have evolved their sound in more recent years! This double-length set has a tremendous sense of scope – as the group have long moved past the jazz rhythms of their name, into worlds that easily embrace hip hop, contemporary soul, and other current styles – served up here with help from a top-shelf lineup of guests, including Jamie Cullum, Oddisee, Paul Randolph, Olivier St Louis, Charlotte OC, David Lemaitre, Nah Slee, Pete Josef, and Rachel Sermanni – each of whom give their tracks a slightly different vibe than the others. Titles include "Summer Keeps On Passing Me By", "Now", "Rain Makes The River", "Follow Your Feet", "Heat Wave", "It's Beautiful", "Everything I Wanted", "Let's Live Well", "I'm Still Here", and "No 9". VariousBig Gold Dreams – A Story Of Scottish Independent Music 1977 to 1989 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $39.99
The northern side of the UK scene finally gets its due – all with a sound that's a lot more exciting than the spare landscape pictured on the cover! The work is all from Scotland, and it's hardly the music of kilts and bagpipes – because nearly all these tracks had a huge influence on the British music scene down south – the kind of tracks that won over listeners on the John Peel Show, got rave reviews in NME and Melody Maker, and forever helped change the style at just about every step of the way from the punk years onwards! The package is a huge treasure trove of great sounds – as musically fantastic as it is a geographical marker – and honestly, we had no idea that so many of these artists were Scottish – as we usually just think of a few key 80s groups when we try to picture that scene. Instead, the book-like package has plenty of knowledge, notes, and pictures to offer – in support of 115 tracks by artists who run the gamut from early punk, through post-punk, power pop, nouveau psych, C86 charmers, Creation Records fuzz, and some of the new grooves that exploded at the end of the 80s. Includes work by The Zips, Skids, Subs, PVC, Rezillos, Jesus & Mary Chain, Del Amitri, Primal Scream, Meat Whiplash, Blood Uncles, Pastels, Altered Images, Prats, Josef K, Cocteau Twins, The Orchids, Vaselines, Shamen, Mackenzies, Baby Lemonade, Bachelor Pad, Dog Faced Hermans, Cindytalk, Strawberry Switchblade, Aztec Camera, Biff Bang Pow, Boots For Dancing, Fire Engines, Thomas Leer, The Associates, Scars, TV 21, Ales Fergusson, Jasmine Minks, and lots lots more! VariousOptimisim/Reject – Punk & Post Punk Meets DIY Aesthetic 1977 to 1981 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A huge document of one of our favorite moments in the UK scene – a time that paralleled the rise of punk, but which also produced a fair bit of music in a very different vibe – even though the artists were inspired by the same sort of energy! Most of the groups here are exploding with new ideas – some loud and raw, some subtle and witty – almost all recorded with an "anything goes" quality, which includes some great ears for studio experimentation, but in a very simple way – making the few familiar instruments often sound unusual, and doing great things for the offbeat vocals too. Some of the artists here rose to greater fame in different modes a few years later, some only flashed briefly during this wonderful stretch of time – and the whole thing has a very big book-style package, with many pages of notes that really tie the whole thing together! 105 tracks in all – with work by Nightmares In Wax, Young Marble Giant, Blurt, Tesco Bombers, Au Pairs, Eater, Alternative TV, Tights, Victim, Art Attacks, Tea Set, Raincoats, Fatal Microbes, Disco Zombies, The Shapes, Spizzoil, Josef K, The Membranes, Blancmange, Sisters Of Mercy, The Fall, Scritti Politti, John Cooper Clarke, Subway Sect, They Must Be Russians, The Higsons, Sad Lovers & Giants, 23 Skidoo, Vivien Goldman, Eyeless In Gaza, Mo-Dettes, Medium Medium, and many more! ✨✧ Rob Franken ElectrificationDon't Stop ... LP
678 Records (Netherlands), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fender Rhodes and vibes – a combination that always sounds fantastic, but which maybe sounds especially great here in a rare 70s session from Dutch keyboard legend Rob Franken! Rob's usually fantastic, no matter what the setting – but here, he's working on a set of spacious grooves that get plenty of great tones and colors from the vibes of Wolfgang Schulter – who works alongside Rob in a groove that's right up there with some of the best MPS funky electric jazz from the early 70s! About half the tracks on the set were written by German pianist Michael Naura – who himself was also doing some great Fender Rhodes work in the 70s – and titles include "Call", "Samba For Sander", "Song For Josef", "Barracuda", "Brown Out", "Concensus", and "Serenade For Myself". Gerald WilsonMoment Of Truth ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good ... $1.99
One of the classic big band sessions cut for Pacific Jazz by LA soul jazz arranger Gerald Wilson. Nearly every track's an original, and the album includes Wilson's killer track "Viva Tirado" – a tight jazzy stepper that was covered by loads of other artists, most famously El Chicano. The record's got loads of other nice moments, too, like "Moment of Truth", "Latino", "Josefina", and "Patterns". A seminal release in the development of west coast Latin funk – and a record that's tougher to find in good shape than you'd think! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johan GradenOlagenheter ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic debut album from pianist Johan Graden – stepping out here as a leader, at the beginning of what should be a fantastic career for years to come! Graden's both a composer and piano player, and he's working here with a style that's right up there with the best of the modern jazz giants from Scandinavia – particularly during that 60s period before things got too free, but when they'd moved quite far from more familiar roots in American jazz! The songforms here are beautiful – very haunting, but never too wispy – often elliptical, but with more than enough meat in the middle to keep things exciting – and often quite swinging, but in a very offbeat way. Graden plays piano, and the rest of the group features Per Texas Johansson on clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute – with Par Ola Landin on bass, Korand Agnas on drums, and Josefin Runsteen on violin. Titles include "Odromt", "Ummah", "Fidelix", "Sagen", "Bas Plessis", and "Ship Of Fools". CD
