✨✧ Jose JamesBlack Magic (10th anniversary edition) ... LP
Brownswood/Rainbow Blonde, 2010. New Copy (reissue)... On August 28, 2020
A brilliant second set from Jose James – and that's saying a lot, given that his debut was already a classic in our book! The sound here is a little more full, and a little more confident – a magical blend of James' raspy vocals with some jazz and funk-inflected rhythms – never overdone, and all put together with the kind of poise and depth that's made Jose an artist to watch since his very first single! There's a positive, progressive vibe to the whole record – the kind of excitement we only feel grabbing us once in a blue moon – and the sound is expanded a bit from the laidback combo of the first record, thanks to production help from Flying Lotus, Mitsu The Beats, and others. But James' vocals are always center stage in the mix, no matter what the setting – and titles include "Lay You Down", "Touch", "Promise In Love", "Warrior", "Made For Love", "Code", "Save Your Love For Me", "Detroit Loveletter", and "Beauty". Jose JamesNo Beginning No End 2 ... CD
Rainbow Blonde, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Really mindblowing work from Jose James – an artist we loved right from his very first record, but one who has us completely over the top with this record – a set that may well push James from the soul underground into firmly classic territory – the sort of space that will have the record standing strong with soul classics from decades back, and for a long time to come! Jose's tremendous vocally, but there's also an extra-special spirit to some of these tunes – one that's still very strongly in the hands of the man himself, even though James opens the door for plenty of guests – a lineup that includes Ledisi, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, Aloe Blacc, Lizz Wright, Eric Truffaz, and others – not the kind of guests who overwhelm and take a too-strong turn in the spotlight, but the right sort of addition to the core sound. Titles include a surprisingly great remake of "Just The Way You Are" – plus "Turn Me Up", "I Need Your Love", "Saint James", "Take Me Home", "Oracle", "Feels So Good", "I Found A Love", and "You Know What I Do". ✨✧ Jose JamesWhile You Were Sleeping ... CD
Blue Note, 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jose James sounds even deeper than ever here – really moving forward with that amazing voice, and really finding a special space between all the jazz, soul, and funk projects of previous years! The album has James almost emerging as a singer who can span genres and reach out to new scenes – especially on some of the tunes that make heavier use of fuzzy guitar than before, and which have a seductive appeal that's bound to grab any ears that haven't been tuned to Jose's music so far! Yet other tracks still hold onto those great roots that made us love him so many records back – a classic style of soulful expression that hearkens back to giants of the 70s, but which always has this 21st century bristle and unique sense of phrasing. Backings are heavy on organ, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards – and titles include "Angel", "Simply Beautiful", "Salaam", "Without U", "Every Little Thing", "Bodhisattva", "Anywhere U Go", and "While You Were Sleeping". JazzanovaOf All The Things (deluxe 3LP version – with pop up gatefold sleeve & download) ... LP
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2008. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 31.99
A tremendous step forward for Jazzanova – an album that's overflowing with classic soul touches, and done in a style we'd hardly have expected from the group a few years before! Jazzanova have always had an ear for older sounds in their music – which is something that first set them apart from the dancefloor pack – but this album's a really amazing achievement, and one that's put together with the solid sound of some lost late 60s sessions from Motown at points – or with some of the cooler sounds of European jazz of the 70s! There's still a 21st Century vibe to the music – a bit of crackle here and there that marks it as contemporary – but the backings also have tight orchestrations, occasional strings, and that perfectly put-together quality that still makes us marvel at old soul and jazz records after all these years. Vocals are sublime too – as the album features contributions from Phonte, Paul Randolph, Ben Westbeech, Jose James, Dwele, Bembe Segue, and Leon Ware – all of whom fit in perfectly, without any of the sort of random "vocals with sound system" feel you might get in another album of this type. Most tracks are co-written with the vocalist – which is an even hipper touch that ensures a depth of quality – and titles include "Gafiera", "Lucky Girl", "Little Bird", "I Can See", "Look What You're Doin To Me", "Let Me Show Ya", "Lie", and "So Far From Home" – plus a great cover of "Rockin You Eternally". 2019 Deluxe 3LP version comes with a full LP of previously unreleased instrumentals, too! Oh NoOhnomite ... CD
Brick/Five Day Weekend, 2012. Used ... $5.99
Oh No once again delivers on the conceptual front – an allstar hip hop project built on Dolemite samples – produced and arranged by Oh No and featuring a stellar guest roster with Erick Sermon, MF Doom, Evidence, Alchemist, Big Pooh, Frank Nitt, Roc C, Guilty Simpson, Jose James, Phife Dawg and more! Rudy Ray Moore and his Dolemite are a vital part of underground hip hop' DNA, so to Oh No's credit, he doesn't go for most obvious fodder or weigh it all too heavily with movie dialogue or the most memorable soundtrack bits. Like the best hip hop ever made, Oh No crafts personal, unique and original music out of samples, and this record belongs to him and his guests! Includes "Real Serious" with Evidence & Alchemist, "The Guns" feat Guilty Simpson & MED, "Time" feat Roc C & Chino XL, "Hallucinations" feat Prozack Turner, "Ohnomite Jazz", "Touch It" feat Frank Nitt, "Dues N Donts" feat Jose James & Phife Dawg, "Runnin The Show" feat Erick Sermon. CD features 2 bonus tracks: "Life Games" feat LMNO and "Overload" feat Wildchild. CD

Marvin ParksMarvin Parks ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2017. Used ... $8.99
A dream of a record from Marvin Parks – a hell of a jazz singer, and one that we'd place in an elite legacy that runs from Oscar Brown up through Jose James! The work here is wonderful – as Nicola Conte produced the record, and gives it the same sort of jazzy sparkle as his own sublime records of the past decade – a groove that's never too overstated, but is also a reworking of an older 60s soul jazz mode – but refitted with all the right sort of sophistication to match Marvin's wonderful voice! There's no programmed rhythms at all – all the instrumentation is live jazz – and titles include a great new take on the Conte tunes "Sea & Sand" and "Awakening" – plus the original "African Other Blues", and versions of "Charade", "How Insensitive", "The Very Thought Of You", "Brother Where Are You", "Nature Boy", "If I Should Lose You", and "Swingin Shepherd Blues". ✨✧ Ben WilliamsI Am A Man ... LP
Rainbow Blonde, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We first fell in love with Ben Williams as a bassist – but here, he's equally a vocalist – stepping out with a richly soulful vibe we never would have expected a few years back! The set marks a label shift for Williams, and a shift in sound too – one that almost resonates as strongly as labelmate Jose James, with similar roots in jazz, but tilted much more strongly towards contemporary soul – delivered with righteous currents that really show Ben starting to take himself seriously as a songwriter. Kendra Foster guests on two tracks – and other guests include Wes Felton, Muhsinah, and Niles – on titles that include "March On", "If You Hear Me", "Come Home", "High Road", "Promised Land", "We Shall Overcome", and "The Death Of Emmett Till". ✨✧ Richard SpavenSpaven's 5ive (clear vinyl pressing – with bonus track) ... LP
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2010. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An early entry in the 5ive series from Jazz Refreshed, but a set that's held up beautifully over the years – and which, in some ways, makes for a great bridge between the current London scene, and the musical modes of that city at the start of this century! Spaven is a jazz musician, but also mixes in equal parts production work – ala the legacy of 4Hero – and the set features vocals from Jose James on one track, and contributions from DJ Doo Wop on another. Yet the core of the music is Spaven's sound – drum lines that are broken, next to basslines that are pulsing, and really great keyboard work in a variety of sounds and styles! Titles include "Network", "Ice Is Nice", "Rockers Round Window", "Maz", and "Zeebra III" – plus the bonus track "1759 Outro", not on the original record. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ James BrownI Can't Stand Myself When You Touch Me ... CD
King/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great lost album from James Brown – and totally funky! The record's got a super-hip cover that shows James standing in a blue room with three fine foxy ladies, and the words "I Can't Stand Myself When You Touch Me" are emblazoned across the top – and the whole thing's as super funky as it looks! The record features many obscure King singles from the mid and late 60s, great little tunes that we always enjoy on funky 45s, and which are sewn together into one of the rawer James Brown LPs from the decade. James and the band are playing Vox instruments – as you can tell by the shameless ad on the back cover – and the record has a garagey funk sound that reminds us of the best Desco work by artists like Lee Fields & Joseph Henry. A prize in any funk collection – and with the cuts "The Soul Of JB", "I Can't Stand Myself When You Touch Me (parts 1 & 2)", "Get It Together (parts 1 & 2)", "Funky Soul #1", "Why Did You Take Your Love From Me", and "Baby Baby Baby Baby". Also features the funky hit "There Was A Time" – always a treat! CD

Roscoe Lee BrowneHand Is On The Gate ... LP
Verve, 1966. Sealed 2LP ... $7.99
Pretty interesting stuff – almost a who's who of African American socially conscious singing actors in the early 60s – with a cast that includes James Earl Jones, Moses Gunn, Leon Bibb, Josephine Premice, Cicely Tyson, and Roscoe Lee Browne, who also arranged and directed the whole affair. Even cooler is the fact that the music was written by Bill Lee and the great Stuart Scharf – and played by the pair with help from Seldon Powell on flute and Floyd Williams on percussion. The performance is part musical, part spoken – a string of passages from writers that include Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, WC Handy, Julian Bond, Le Roi Jones, and others – working together beautifully in a very righteous, slightly radical theater piece. ✨✧ Oliver LakeHeavy Spirits ... LP
Arista/Freedom, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great early work from Lake – playing here in a number of different settings, but always with well-matched collaborators! 3 tracks on the set – "Owshet", "Heavy Spirits", and "While Pushing Down Turn" – featuring Lake with Olu Dara on trumpet, Donald Smith on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and Stafford James on bass, playing in sort of a freebop mode. Three more tracks – "Movement Equals Creation", "Intensity", and "Altoviolin" – feature Lake on alto, playing with a violin trio that sounds very dark and moody. "Rocket" is a trio piece, with Joseph Bowie and Charles Bobo Shaw – and "Lonely Blacks" is a somber solo sax piece. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch and light wear.)
