Jon BatisteChronology Of A Dream – Live At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Jon Batiste is fantastic here – way more so than we normally give him credit for, and maybe even sharper in a live setting than in the studio! The group works with a mix of jazz, funk, and soul – but very different than Jon's band on TV, as there's deeper, richer elements going on – both in the general colors of the instruments, and in the way that the solos soar out and really give the songs some emotion. The lineup features tenor, alto, trumpet, and lots of nice bottom currents on the rhythms – sometimes funky, sometimes more lyrical – all topped with great piano lines from Batiste, who also sings a bit too. Much of the phrasing and flavor is more modern than some of his other albums – and titles include "Blacck", "Prince", "Pwwr", "Birthe", "Kenner", "Story", "Ordr", and "Higher". Jon BatisteHollywood Africans ... CD
Verve, 2018. Used ... $6.99
Think what you want about Jon Batiste on TV – the man's out to show you here that he's one hell of a pianist – and a jazz musician with a lot more depth than just his mainstream appearances! The set is mostly solo, and surprisingly beautiful – as Batiste is able to both serve up some New Orleans roots, and also hit some even more striking moments that have a much more modern appeal – this range of emotion we never would have expected, and which is mostly pretty surprising – apart from a few titles that Jon must have thrown in to keep some of the "visitors" on track. The solo piano numbers are fantastic – a real revelation – and titles include "Green Hill Zone", "Mr Buddy", "Kenner Boogie", "Chopinesque", "Nocturne No 1 In D Minor", "Is It Over", and "Don't Stop". Jon BatisteWe Are ... CD
Verve, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Jon Batiste is looking mighty righteous on the cover, and he's sounding mighty righteous within – imbued with a new spirit of consciousness from the events of 2020, which brings a whole new sort of focus to his music – and makes for an album that's every bit a soul set as it is a jazz record! Jon sings on every track, with this raspy power that pushes the rest of the music forward very strongly – igniting the proceedings with the kind of fire you'd hope for, given the album's dedication to "the dreamers, seers, griots, and truth tellers who refuse to let us fully descend into madness". Batiste can definitely add himself to that list – as can guests who include Zadie Smith, Hot 8 Brass Band, PJ Morton, and Trombone Shorty – on titles that include "Cry", "Boy Hood", "Movement 11", "Show Me The Way", "We Are", "Tell The Truth", "Sing", "Until", "Mavis", and "Whatchutalkinbout". ✨✧ Jon BatisteAnatomy Of Angels – Live At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very different side of pianist Jon Batiste than you'll hear on television – and a record that's a great reminder of just how great a jazz musician he can be when he wants to! The set was recorded live at the Vanguard – and the songs are beautiful long-spun numbers that not only provide a perfect showcase for Jon's skills on the piano, filled with lots of soulful inflections that are really wonderful – but also display the larger Batiste vision with a group – a slightly larger ensemble here with arrangments by Jon that fill things in nicely alongside his strong voice on the keys. Rachael Price delivers a vocal performance on "The Very Thought Of You" – and other tunes include "Creative", "Dusk Train To Doha", "Round Midnight", and "Anatomy Of Angels". CD

❔
A beautiful record from an up-and-coming pianist who's bound to be making huge waves in jazz for years to come – stepping out here with a very personal statement that's crafted with the help of a shifting array of musical associates! Bassist Derrick Hodge produced the record, and also plays on a number of tracks – but at the core, it's clearly Matthew Whitaker who's the driving force of the record – shifting between piano, organ, and keyboards depending on the mode of the soon – invoking a wide history of jazz, but also filtering things through a dynamic approach that belies his youthful, optimistic vision. Other players include Marcos Robinson on guitar, Otis Brown III and Johnathan Blake on drums, and Karim Hutton and Endea Jones on bass – and the set features guest work from John Batiste on piano, Regina Carter on violin, and Steve Oquendo on trumpet. Titles include "A New Day", "Bye Ya", "Journey Uptown", "Spain", "Stop Fighting", "Lately", "I'm Sorry", and a nice remake of the Duke Pearson tune "Jeannine". CD
(Official street date late Aug, actual ETA tentative.)
