✨✧ Johnny RiversIn Action!/Changes ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1965/1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of mid 60s cookers from the mighty Johnny Rivers – back to back on a single set! In Action is a record from a time when Rivers was still drawing big crowds on the Sunset Strip – and features that tight, catchy approach that was such a huge hit – jaunty guitar lines set up in lean rhythms that are heavy on bass and drums – topped by vocals that never seem to get in the way of the instrumentation! Titles include "Mountain Of Love", "Promised Land", "What Am I Doin Here With You", "Moody River", "It's All Over Now", "Rhythm Of The Rain", and "Keep A Knockin". Changes is a well-titled set from the second chapter in the career of Johnny Rivers – a record that has him stepping into deeper, more sophisticated territory than before – with some slightly larger arrangements put together by the great Marty Paich! There's still plenty of those groovy rhythms that helped put Rivers at the top of the charts, but Johnny's also opening up his range of material, and getting a bit more introspective at times too – on titles that include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "If I Were A Carpenter", "Getting Ready For Tomorrow", "Poor Side Of The Town", and a great cover of "California Dreamin". Island, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that's not only a landmark in Jamaican music – but also a set that was to reggae what Curtis Mayfield's Superfly was to 70s soul! In other words, the set not only raised the bar for all the competition, it also ended up in a lot more record collections than most of them too – maybe in part because it was a soundtrack, as was Superfly – but also because it has this global power that makes it a defining album of the genre! Jimmy Cliff is obviously the mainman here, but there's help from other key players in the growing reggae scene – and titles include Jimmy's classic "You Can Get It If You Really Want", in two versions – plus two takes on "The Harder They Come", "Many Rivers To Cross", and "Sitting In Limbo" – plus "Sweet & Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" by The Maytals, "007" by Desmond Dekker, "Johnny Too Bad" by The Slicers, "Draw Your Brakes" by Scotty, and "Rivers Of Babylon" by The Melodians. ✨✧ VariousJoe Gibbs Presents Freedom To The People ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stunning tribute to the legendary Joe Gibbs – one that doesn't just offer up a general assortment of cuts, but instead hones in on work recorded in the years 1971 and 1972 – a moment when Gibbs was really helping to transform the sound of Jamaican music! Many of these cuts show the new sort of headiness that Joe and a few key contemporaries were bringing to the scene in Kingston – and as with other Doctor Bird collections, the presentation is fantastic – with a huge amount of tracks that have never appeared on CD before, all with wonderful sound, and very detailed notes on Joe and the artists! There's a massive 54 cuts on the 2CD set – and titles include "If Ah Sa So" by The Destroyers, "New Kent Road" by Johnny Lover, "How Your Panty Get Wet" by Stranger & Jimmy, "We Love Weed" by Joe Gibbs All STars, "Rivers Of Babylon" by Prince Student, Cherry Island" by Aubrey Adams, "Peace Maker" by Max Romeo, "The Gardener" by Judy Mowatt, "Ah So" by Tommy McCook, "Rebeloution" by Winston Wright, "African Plant" by Vin Gordon, "George Headley Medley" by Dennis Alcapone, "Our Day Will Come" by The Heptones, "African Queen" by Augustus Pablo, "The Dynamic Ken Parker" by Ken Parker, "Shake Pretty Girl" by Jackie Brown, "From Africa With Love" by Rasta Man, "By The River Brown Sugar" by Cat Campbell, and lots lots more! ✨✧ Herbie MannLive At The Whisky A Go Go ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Herbie Mann kicks Johnny Rivers off the stage of the Whisky A Go Go – and serves up some amazing long tracks that really redefine the sound of jamming on the Sunset Strip! The album's quite unusual for the time – in that it features two long tracks, which each run a side apiece – played by Herbie's hip late 60s group that featured Sonnh Sharrock on guitar and Roy Ayers on vibes – plus Steve Marcus on tenor and Miroslav Vitous on bass! With players like that, you can bet there's a massive sound to the whole thing – one that goes beyond even the boldness of other live Herbie Mann albums – and titles include a long take on Chris Hill's "Ooh Baby", and side two features a great version of Rufus Thomas' classic "Philly Dog". ✨✧ Johnny LytleMoon Child (ABC/Riverside) ... LP
Riverside/ABC, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest early albums by Johnny Lytle – and a very tasty set of tracks that has a slightly different kick than usual. Johnny's regular trio with Milt Harris on organ and Peppy Hinant on drums is joined by Steve Cooper on bass and Ray Barretto on congas – which gives the tracks a fuller sound, and a nicely rolling groove from the conga. The vibes and organ still dominate strongly – which is ok by us – and the sound is opened past Johnny's regular stepping groove. Titles include a number of nice originals like "The House Of Winchester", "Moon Child", and "The Moor Man" – plus "Work Song" and "A Taste Of Honey". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny GriffinBig Soul Band (with bonus track) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used ... $6.99
A sweet little album from Johnny – quite different than most of his other sessions at the time, as this one features a big band – a "Big Soul Band", as the title says – filled with some strong Chicago and soul jazz players, and featuring killer arrangements by the great Norman Simmons! Simmons' was just bubbling up at the time – and he had a sock soul jazz sound that was part of his time on the Chicago scene, and which, unfortunately, rarely achieved as strong of recorded expression as it did on this album. Griffin's a heck of a great player, even at this age, and the strength of his horn sits nicely in the front of a great ensemble that also includes Pat Patrick, Matthew Gee, Julian Priester, Frank Strozier, Bobby Timmons, Harold Mabern, Vic Sproles, and Charlie Persip. Titles include a number of Simmons originals – like "Meditation", "Panic Room Blues", and "Holla" – plus a great reading of Timmons' "So Tired", and traditionals like "Deep River", "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen" and "Wade In The Water" and Junior Mance's "Jubilation". Inclues the bonus track "Wade In The Water (alternate take)". CD

Johnny GriffinDo Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1963. Used ... $12.99
A moodier session than usual for Griff – but in a nice way – and one that's cut with Buddy Montgomery on vibes and piano, and handled in a laidback soul jazz mode that's a refreshing change from some of his sharper hardbop sides! Highlights include the extended original "Slow Burn", plus renditions of the classics "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" and "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set". The group's completed by Monk Montgomery on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and in a way, the album sort of feels like one of Monk and Buddy's Mastersounds sessions, with the added touch of a horn player! Johnny LytleVillage Caller ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used ... $7.99
A funky vibes classic – and a landmark set from Detroit vibist Johnny Lytle! The set's one of the purest examples of Johnny's great early groove – a tightly stepping version of soul jazz that played big in the clubs at the time, and which has forever made Lytle one of the favorites of the mod jazz dance circuit! Lytle mixes his own heavy work on vibes with some great work from his regular trio members Milt Harris on organ and William "Peppy" Hinnant on drums – augmented here by some additional bass from Bob Cranshaw and percussion from Willie Rodriguez. The sound is strong and tight – arguably even more classic than that of Lytle's Tuba recordings – and the title cut "Village Caller" is a wonderfully angular groover that still gets heavy play in Chicago to this day! Other tracks include the modal dancer "Kevin Devin", plus the tracks "Pedro Strodder", "Green Dolphin Street", "Solitude", and "Unhappy Happy Soul". CD

✨✧ Johnny Hammond SmithBlack Coffee ... LP
Riverside, 1962. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Johnny Hammond's first albums – and a cooking little live set that really has the organist working with some early raw power! The group's a trio, but they seem to burn differently than some of the other organ combos of the time – maybe with that fluid sensibility that Johnny brought to his keys, and which would later open up in even more famous ways. The core group features Eddie McFadden on guitar and Leo Stevens on drums – but they're joined by Seldon Powell on tenor for more than half the album, who really opens things up with his tremendous playing – and shows at an early state that Johnny Hammond always knows the right way to use a horn player. Titles include "Monterey Theme", "Far Away Places", "I Remember Clifford", "He's A Real Gone Guy", and "Rufus Toofus". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny GriffinGriff 'N Bags ... CD
Rearward/Schema (Italy), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lost European jazz recordings from the vaults of producer Gigi Campi – and a stellar batch of non-US material with Johnny Griffin at the lead – working in the company of Clarke/Boland compatriots who include Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Idrees Sulieman, and Milt Jackson! Despite the "Bags" in the title, Milt's only on a few tracks – but that's fine with us, because Johnny Griffin is the main attraction – and the material is good small group sides with Griff soloing and trading lines with players like Sulieman and Bailey, or with some of the other players on their own. The recordings are different than the usual breed of Johnny Griffin European recordings – most of which have him soloing with a piano quartet on extended tracks. On this release, most of the tracks are short, hard, and very nicely swinging with a good hard bop groove – as with the best of Griffin's Riverside and Blue Note recordings. Kenny Clarke's on drums on nearly all the material, and he pulls out his bop chops to drive Griff's hard solos as fast as he can. The set's a great batch of work, with excellent notes and photos, and some great playing all around. Cuts include "Gamal Sady 'n Em", "Foot Patting", "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz", "Blues For K", "Muvaffak's Pad", "The Girl & The Turk", and "Gyson's Bag". 16 cuts in all, and none of them are from the Griffin/Davis LP on MPS (just in case you thought to ask!) ✨✧ Johnny GriffinKerry Dancers (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Riverside (Japan), Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really unique album in the career of Johnny Griffin – and one of the few entries in the short-lived "jazz meets folk" genre of the 60s! The record features Griffin blowing through versions of older folk numbers – mostly traditional tunes, re-arranged by Johnny here with a swinging vibe that's a bit soul jazz, but also slightly more exotic and lyrical – in keeping with the timeless themes of the compositions. The rest of the group includes Barry Harris on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – a trio who seem well-suited to match the sensitive spirit of some of the tunes! And while you might have reservations about a record like this, don't – because Griffin's tone and phrasing are great, and really keep things away from the gimmicky side of the spectrum! Titles include "The Kerry Dancers", "Green Grow The Rushes", "Black is The Color of My True Love's Hair", "25 1/2 Daze", and "The Londonderry Air" – plus the Griffin original "Oh Now I See". CD

✨✧ Johnny GriffinLittle Giant ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard bop" was coined for – sharp-edged jazz at its best – informed strongly by earlier bop and modern modes, but also played with a deeper dose of soul overall. The six players come together perfectly throughout – working with a tightness that matches most Blue Note work of the time – and titles are a great set of tracks that includes 3 by Chicago pianist Norman Simmons, and 1 by the great Babs Gonzales. Tunes include "Olive Refractions", "The Message", "Lonely One", "Playmates", and "63rd Street Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A record that definitely lives up to its title – reminding us not only that Johnny Hammond Smith is one hell of an organist, but also a great leader with a really unique feel for a groove! The set's noteworthy not just for Johnny's own work on Hammond, but also for the presence of a young Houston Person – blowing tenor here in a way that's breathtaking right from the start – a bold, soulful tone that's a perfect fit for the group – which also includes trumpet from Johnny Williams and guitar from Eddie McFadden. The set includes a lot of tasty originals by Johnny – like "Cyra", "Lambert's Lounge", "Departure", and "Opus 2" – and already shows the way that Hammond was complicating his groove from that of other players of the time! Argo, Late 50s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Excellent early work by Johnny Griffin – a set that's a bit more obscure than some of his Blue Note classics to come, and which was recorded on the Chicago hometown scene from which he first sprang! The group here is a quartet – with Junior Mance on piano and Wilbur Ware on bass – the same lineup that graced the legendary Chicago Sound album under Ware's own name, which was issued on Riverside – a record that shares a lot with this one in its mix of soul and modernism, new ideas just brimming over from all of the young players involved. The album's overflowing with great tenor work from Griffin – angular, imaginative, and really breaking out of tenor modes of the early 50s. Original titles include "Lollypop", "Satin Wrap", "Riff Raff", and "Bee-Ees" – and the group does some nice work on a few mellower ballads as well! LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1957. Used ... $2.99
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". Blue's leadership isn't that strong – but fortunately, the others (particularly Griffin, Ware, and Jones) gel together strongly with or without him, making the set crackle with the soulful energy of some of the best Jazzland/Riverside hardbop sides from the time. Quite a great session for Chet Baker – one that has him recording in New York, with a hip lineup that includes some incredibly soulful players! The tunes on the set feature Chet in either quartet or quintet formation – working with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Al Haig on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Tracks are longish, and the sound is much more in the mode of Riverside at the time, than the sound of Chet's earlier Pacific Jazz records – and Chet holds his own nicely in this company, giving a hint of the style to come in a few more years. ✨✧ Art Blakey & Thelonius MonkArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk (180 gram 2LP edition – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Atlantic/Rhino, 1957. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Features a full bonus album of outtakes from the sessions – most unreleased! LP, Vinyl record album
(Features new mastering from the mono master tapes – plus new notes, and rare photos and ephemera!)

Riverside, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Fair Weather", "Hotel 49", "When Lights Are Low", "Solar", and "Blue Thoughts". LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzland, Late 50s. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A pretty cool-looking Jazzland album that combines tracks from 2 other earlier Riverside albums – one that we've identified as Clark Terry's Serenade To A Bus Seat, the other we're not sure of. Side 1 features Kelly, Jones, Paul Chambers, Johnny Griffin, and Clark Terry on the tunes "Stardust", "Cruisin", and "That Old Black Magic". Side 2 features Kelly, Ware, Jones, and Ernie Henry on "Soon", "Lover Man", and "Specific Gravity". All tracks are quite nice – and in that great mix of hardbop and soul jazz that Riverside was hitting towards the end of the 50s. Cool cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Blue in the main style of his early years at Riverside – working in an all-star group (the "Big 6" in the title), with players that include Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones. Blue's leadership isn't that strong – but fortunately, the others (particularly Griffin, Ware, and Jones) gel together strongly with or without him, making the set crackle with the soulful energy of some of the best Jazzland/Riverside hardbop sides from the time. Inner City, 1959/1961/1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99 14.99
Rare work from Eddie Jefferson – cut between his early years on Prestige, and his revival on Riverside – work done for the Festival Records label, but best known in this hip 70s package put together by Inner City! The work here is a great precursor to Eddie's 60s comeback – and shows him really moving forward strongly, even on a tiny label – reworking his older vocal style with a hipper modern groove, and really reaching some new territory in the process. The tunes are awash in those charming tones and phrasings that always set Jefferson apart from the rest – and there's a few R&B undercurrents here, mixed in with the more familiar bop influences. Players are all great too – and include Johnny Coles or Howard McGee on trumpet, James Moody on tenor, Matthew Gee on trombone, Musa Kaleem on tenor and baritone, and Johnny Acea on piano. Babs Gonzalez and Honey Gordon get in a few licks on versions of "So What" and "Sister Sadie" – helping Eddie out with their hip vocal talents – and other tracks include "Memphis", "Baby Girl", "Sherry", "Body & Soul", and "Workshop". Eddie JeffersonThere I Go Again ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s/1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $4.99
A really great overview of the career of Eddie Jefferson – one that begins with his first few vocal singles of the 50s, and follows him through album work for Riverside and Prestige in the 60s! Jefferson's contribution to jazz is tremendous – as he was one of the first to set lyrics to solos by famous players of the time, giving them deeper meaning with his own new lyrics and his warmly raspy vocal presentation of the material. Here, he's working with a top-shelf array of jazz players who really appreciate his work – including Seldon Powell, Clark Terry, Charles McPherson, Barry Harris, Johnny Griffin, and James Moody – the last of whom was a longtime friend and collaborator of Jefferson. Titles include "Soft & Furry", "Old Shoes", "Baby Girl", "Come Along With Me", "There I Go There I Go Again", "Filthy McNasty", "Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Now's The Time", "Things Are Getting Better", and "Disappointed". A seminal world jazz crossover from bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik – one of the first albums ever of its kind, and as fresh today as it was back in the late 50s! At the time of the set, Ahmed was working as Thelonious Monk's bassist – but here, he also plays a fair bit of oud – that lute-like stringed instrument from the Middle East that often has a weirdly sort of angular sound. Other non-traditional jazz instrumentation on the record includes kanoon, darabeka, and duf – all of Middle Eastern origins – and these instruments are mixed with straighter jazz work from Johnny Griffin on tenor, whose solos really add a lot of soul to the set. Arguably the best album that Philly Joe Jones ever cut as a leader – and a straight ahead set of soulful hardbop tunes played in the company of an excellent group! The set fits with with some of the super-hip soul jazz sides coming out on Riverside and Jazzland during the late 50s – and the sextet on the album features players who also made their mark for the label, like Julian Priester, Johnny Griffin, and Nat Adderley, who play here with Tommy Flanagan and Jimmy Garrison. The interplay between Garrison and Jones is worth the price of the record alone, and Jimmy pushes Philly into territory that's a bit more sophisticated than his usual groove. Classic early Wes Montgomery – 2 Riverside sessions collected on one double LP, Movin' Along and Full House. Movin' Along features James Clay playing with the group, for the added bonus of a flute/tenor sound that you don't always get on Wes' guitar-heavy sessions. The record includes the nice groover "Movin' Along", plus "So Do It", "Sandu", and "Says You", which was written by Sam Jones, who plays bass on the session. Full House is another great set by Wes – recorded in a very lively live setting, with a quartet that includes Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. It's great to hear Griffin with Montgomery, and the two of them pair up nicely on the album's longer tracks – like "Full House" and "Cariba", both written by Montgomery, and the classic "Blue N Boogie" by Dizzy Gillespie. A classic cooker from Thelonious Monk – recorded during his legendary run at the Five Spot in the late 50s, and featuring some especially great work on tenor from a young Johnny Griffin! Griffin's filling a role here that would be cemented a bit more firmly in the 60s by Charlie Rouse – but what we like about his playing here is that it's not as clearly codified "Monkish" as some of Rouse's work (even though that's all pretty darn great) – sometimes a bit more open, although still filled with angular tones and changes on this set of all-original compositions by Monk. Rhythm is by Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass and Roy Haynes on drums – and titles include "Evidence", "Epistrophy", "Blue Monk", "Rhythm-a-ning", "Light Blue", and "Coming on the Hudson".
