Johnny Guitar WatsonAin't That A Bitch ... LP
DJM, 1976. Very Good+ ... $9.99 14.99
Maybe the best album that Johnny Watson cut during his DJM years – a totally tight, totally soulful set that avoids any fake funk cliches! The record's got some wonderful trippy numbers – cut in that slow g-funky mode that was Johnny's huge legacy to the west coast scene – best of these is the classic "Superman Lover", a great little cut with a very catchy hook, and just the right dose of humor. But you'll also catch the same vibe on "I Want To Ta Ta You Baby", "Ain't That A Bitch", and "I Need It". Johnny's sitting on the cover, surrounded by ladies and a dog – and the back cover says "My apologies to Freddie, my guitar, for forgetting to bring him to the photo session." What a guy! Johnny Guitar WatsonLove Jones ... LP
DJM, 1980. Sealed ... $14.99
One of the last great records by Johnny Guitar Watson – and an album that's got some wonderfully subdued moments, which is a real relief after some of the too-funky bits on some of his other sets from the late 70s! Johnny returns to the tight soul of the mid 70s Fantasy LPs – still keeping the guitar up in the mix, but also really focusing on his wonderfully compressed style of vocals – a slightly tripped out mode that dances along beautifully with the guitar – ta-ta-ing us to some great mellow grooves, and really letting Watson's personality shine! Titles include "Love Jones", "Asante Sana", "Lone Ranger", and "Children of the Universe". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Guitar WatsonWhat The Hell Is This? (expanded edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
DJM/Shout Factory, 1979. Used ... $4.99 11.99
A great return to the spacey soul that made Johnny Watson so great in the 70s – a set that turns down the bass and brings up Johnny's voice – letting his wonderful persona drift and flow amidst a range of mellow-grooving tracks! The album's got some great echoes of territory that Johnny first explored during his Fantasy years – that style that took his older blues and smoothed it out – compressing all the elements together in a really great way, yet without some of the overdone funky bits that could sometimes hurt later Watson work from these years. Johnny's charm is undeniable throughout – wickedly soulful and clever, and not nearly as silly as you'd think from the album's goofy cover. Titles include "In The World", "What The Hell Is This?", "Strung Out", and "Cop & Blow". CD features 2 previously unreleased bonus tracks – "Watsonian Institute" and "The Funk If I Know". CD
(Out of print. Sealed with a punch through the barcode.)

DJM, 1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not of Johnny's more famous albums, but it's plenty darn nice – and done in a wicked blend of spacey vocals and keyboards that's very much in the best Guitar Watson mode! There's a bit of a bump to a few tunes on the set, clearly a move to make it onto the dancefloor – but the album's hardly a cheap disco effort, as all the Watson guitar, vocals, and humor dominate the record strongly – and seem to come alive with a bit of new energy away from some of the usual bluesier settings. Titles include the great scatting number "Wrapped In Black Mink", plus "Miss Frisco", "Baby Face", "You Can Stay But The Noise Must Go", and a remake of "Gangster Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny Guitar WatsonThree Hours Past Midnight ... CD
Modern/Flair, Mid 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the first truly sublime work from Johnny Guitar Watson – mid 50s R&B sides cut for the Modern label in LA, served up in a wonderful blend of blues roots, jazzy inflections, and that undeniable Johnny Guitar sense of power and personality! Even at this early age, Johnny had a style that was unlike anyone else – electric guitar-based blues at its roots, but served up with a hipper, smoother, more jazz-inspired style – one that was a perfect match for the wit and charm of Watson's vocals. The 16 track collection is still one of the best documents of Johnny's talents from the time – and it's filled with classics that include "She Moves Me", "Hot Little Mama", "Motor Head Baby", "Hot Little Mama", "Ruben", "Ain't Gonna Hush", "The Bear", "Those Lonely Lonely Nights", and "Three Hours Past Midnight". Fantasy, 1975. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Sublime mid 70s work from Johnny Guitar Watson – a Bay Area blend of soulful production, jazzy playing, and bits of bluesy phrasing, with a hard-to-match quality that we'd put in the same camp as work by Shuggie Otis from the time. Johnny's vocals and guitar are amazing – very laidback and trippy, without all the silly stuff that you sometimes get on later records. "I Don't Want To Be A Lone Ranger" is a great stepper with a jazzy finish and a really catchy hook – and other good cuts include "Lonely Man's Prayer", "You Make My Heart Want To Sing", "Tripping", "Strong Vibrations", and "It's Way Too Late", a reworking (and real steal) of a song from Jon Lucien's great "Rashieda" album! DJM, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The title and the cover on this one are a bit of an in joke – as Johnny Guitar Watson plays all instruments on the album himself – but the joke stops there, as the record's every bit as great as any of Watson's classics from the time! And there's no "clone" in the grooves at all – no nod to more popular styles by other artists of the time – because Johnny keeps things unique throughout, always working that undeniable Watson charm alongside some wicked guitar and super-sly vocals! Keyboards figure in as much as guitar on the record, and there's some really great laidback numbers that almost have a Shuggie Otis-like approach to soul. Titles include "What Is Love", "Family Clone", "Forget The Joneses", "Clone Information", "Voodoo What You Do", and "Come & Dance With Me". LP, Vinyl record album

DJM, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Tripped-out funk from Johnny – very much in his "I Got To Ta Ta Ya Baby" mode, with the guitar skipping around keyboards in a mellow Bay Area kind of way! Johnny's gone way way past his bluesy roots here – into a sublime blend of soul and funk that's all crafted with just the right amount of lightly spacey touches. The Watson vocals are totally on the money throughout – sliding into the mix in that seductive way that often has Johnny singing beautifully alongside his guitar. Titles include "It's All About The Dollar Bill", "Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty", "Barn Door", "Love That Will Not Die", 'I'm Gonna Get You Baby", "Give Me My Love", and "It's A Damn Shame". 2 of Johnny Guitar Watson's best albums ever – back to back on a single CD! First up is Listen – quite possibly the rarest of all Johnny Guitar Watson albums – and his first from the 70s – a mindblowing batch of trippy soul tunes that sounds far different than much of his later work! Johnny's not yet in the funky mode here – and he's working in a very cool flanged-out approach that has his vocals tripping lightly with his guitar – in a spacious soul mode that captures some of the energy of Shuggie Otis at the time. The overall sound is incredibly righteous – and the album's a delight throughout! Titles include "Lovin You", "If I Had The Power", "You Bring Love", "I Get A Feeling", and "You're The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Had". I Don't Want To Be Alone Stranger is sublime mid 70s work from Johnny Guitar Watson – a Bay Area blend of soulful production, jazzy playing, and bits of bluesy phrasing, with a hard-to-match quality that we'd put in the same camp as work by Shuggie Otis from the time. ✨✧ Johnny Guitar WatsonReal Mother For Ya ... LP
DJM, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Johnny Guitar Watson at the top of his game – working here in a sublime mix of funk, blues, and soul – all crafted into a groove that was uniquely Watson's own! Johnny may have started the 70s in relative obscurity – down from some hit work in the 50s and 60s – but by the time of this set, he was back on top, and working in a confident groove that few others from his older era could ever hope to achieve! There's a youthful sense of sex and soul that run through the entire set – an effortlessly slinky groove that never goes too over the top in the funk department, and which makes just the right use of electric instrumentation and tripped-out production, but never gets too wrapped up in either – and often comes off with some great jazzy touches as well. Titles include the anthemic "Real Mother For Ya", plus "Your Love Is My Love", "The Real Deal", "Tarzan", "I Wanna Thank You", and "Lover Jones". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny Guitar WatsonFunk Anthology – Best Of The Funk Years From The Original Gangster Of Love (with unreleased tracks) ... CD
Shout, Late 70s/Early 80s/1994. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A double-length collection of genius from Johnny Guitar Watson – one that focuses mostly on his key revival tunes of the mid and late 70s, and which also features some unreleased tracks! By the time of this work, Watson had already been bumping around the west coast R&B scene for nearly 20 years – recording in a range of styles that included blues, soul, and even a bit of jazz at times. Yet in the mid 70s, something really snapped – and Watson found that lean, clean style that would forever put him at the top of the funky pack – an approach that mixed together the blues of his roots with a compressed approach to guitar that was possibly inspired by younger players of the time, and which was crafted onto a homegrown groove that set the tone for a lot of other funk to come. CD features work from Watson's post Fantasy albums of the late 70s and early 80s – plus a few from the 1994 Bow Wow album – with a total of 31 tracks that includes the unreleased numbers "Ain't Nobody's Business", "Before I Let You Go", "Don't Be What UC", "Baby's In Love With The Radio", "Feel The Spirit Of My Guitar", and "ET" – plus "Ain't That A Bitch", "Superman Lover", "I Need It", "Real Mother For Ya", "I Want To Ta Ta You Baby", "Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty", "It's All About The Dollar Bill", "Gangster Of Love", "Telephone Bill", "Love Jones", and "Cop & Blow". Cadet, Early 60s/1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
70's issue of this insanely wonderful early session by Johnny Guitar Watson – originally recorded for Chess in the early 60s, and featuring Johnny on piano, not guitar! Despite the sexy 70's cover (an attempt to cash in on Johnny's hit records at the time), this one's a beautiful set of jazzy cuts played by Johnny in vocal and instrumental versions. The record's incredibly tough to describe – but the sound is amazing, and Johnny's vocal interpretations of the material are fantastic. Includes a slamming Latin take on "I'll Remember April", plus the cuts "Exactly Like You", "Misty", and "Witchcraft". Great stuff – and one of our favorite sessions ever! LP, Vinyl record album

Specialty, Early/Mid 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful blues from Guitar Slim – west coast material from the mid-50s, recorded with some very hip backings! Slim's got a lean, mean edge – a style that's a bit similar to Johnny Watson in his early years, touched with some of the class of the R&B scene that was bubbling up in the late 40s in LA! The added instrumentation really makes the tracks great – not just the usual blues, but a more sophisticated mode with some nicely jazzy undercurrents. The set's very well put-together too – 26 tracks in all, with titles that include "Going Down Slow", "The Things That I Used To Do", "Well I Done Got Over It", "Twenty Five Lies", "Stand By Me", "Sufferin Mind", "You're Gonna Miss Me", "I Got Sumpin For You", "Story Of My Life", and "Our Only Child". One of George Duke's best albums for the MPS label – and a set that has a sound that's a little bit more soul than before! The album uses a fair bit of vocals alongside Duke's funky keyboards – but in a way that's not nearly as smooth as some of his albums for Epic, and which still retains all the best spacey and cosmic bits of his roots! The record's got a strong west coast soul feel – with elements of some of the jazzy funk of the Fantasy Records/Bay Area scene, and elements of the electric funk that was starting to come out of LA at the time – and there's a huge host of guest stars on the record, including Johnny Guitar Watson (who sings on one track), Emil Richards (who plays marimba), and Flora Purim (who does her usual thing!) Titles include "Chariot", "Someday", "That's What She Said", "Sister Serene", "Prepare Yourself", "Rokkinrowl", and "Look Into Her Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

Watsonian InstituteMaster Funk ... LP
DJM, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great Johnny Guitar Watson side project – a set not billed directly to his name on the front, but which has all the great hallmarks of the best Watson albums from the 70s! Johnny produced, wrote songs, played, and sung on the record – but there's also an equal focus on his backing group too – which means maybe a bit lead guitar upfront, and more vocals from the whole ensemble – who work together to give the whole thing a mighty great party sound! In fact, some of the best numbers almost have a roller boogie vibe that's not unlike early hip hop – although other numbers get much bassier, and funkier overall. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Virginia's Pretty Funky", "De John's Delight", "Lady Voo Doo", "Master Funk", and "The Funk If I Know". LP, Vinyl record album

Nancy WilsonAll In Love Is Fair/Come Get To This ... CD
Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1974/1975. Used ... $11.99
A pair of great Nancy Wilson albums from the mid 70s in a single set! All In Love Is Far is a sophisticated album of soul tracks arranged and produced by Gene Page, in a string-heavy, slightly-funky style that reminds us of Gene's work with Barry White at the time. The tracks are all pretty hip – and include titles written by Stevie Wonder, Johnny Guitar Watson, Thom Bell & Linda Creed, Billy Page, and Tennyson Stevens. No standout singles, but plenty of nice moments, and a good side of Nancy's career that isn't always given that much exposure. Titles include "Tell The Truth", "Try It, You'll Like It", "All In Love Is Fair", "There'll Always Be Forever", and "You're As Right As Rain". Come Get To This is a real sweet soul gem from '75. It also has arrangements and production by Gene and Billy Page – who give the record a great smooth 70s soul finish, and a feel that's a lot more unified than some of her other efforts from the decade. Nancy sings some great versions of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" and "Come Get To This", plus the original tracks "Houdini Of The Midnight Hour", "Like A Circle Never Stops", "Boogeyin All The Way", and "Happy Tears". BGP (UK), 1970s. Used ... $6.99
Sweet and smooth 70s soul – hand-picked with a freshness that should appeal to folks who found these sounds through the hip hop that these grooves laid the sonic groundwork for. The tracks on here aren't as beat or break-heavy as some of the material on other sample-driven collections – but that's fine with us, as the tracks move into a sophisticated soul range that's always a pleasure to hear, bringing together the kind of well-produced 70s tracks we love! Hardly the disco promised in the title – and more of a club funk album overall – served up with plenty of input from the great Johnny Guitar Watson! The album's a great break from Johnny's usual groove – as he's able to retire his personality a bit, and slide in with the groove of the rest of the band – even though Watson's still at the helm – handling the writing, arrangements, and production of the record! The band handles most of the vocals, though – in a cool catchy style that works great with their tight instrumentation – and the whole thing's mighty groovy throughout. Vee Jay, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An early comeback for Little Richard – one of many over the years, and the one that's probably closest to the sound that first got him started! Although issued on Vee Jay in the 60s, the record's got less of a soul groove than you'd expect – and features Richard working on the west coast in a rough-edged R&B mode that's quite different than the smoother shift that was going down with most of Vee Jay's Chicago crew at the time. Most tracks have some super-sharp guitar – often played by a young Jimi Hendrix, as well as Johnny Guitar Watson and Black Arthur – and as usual, Richard's on the piano on most numbers, really wailing on the keys at a level that matches the pyrotechnics of his vocals! Titles include "Going Home Tomorrow", "Hound Dog", "Only You", "Goodnight Irene", "Lawdy Miss Claudie", "Groovy Little Suzie", and "Cherry Red". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimmy McGriffGroove Grease/Main Squeeze/Tailgunner (3CD set) ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971/1974/1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Three 70s killers from Jimmy McGriff! Groove Grease is a nice bit of funky organ work from Jimmy McGriff – a set that's got his famous talents on the Hammond out front of a larger ensemble – but in a way that's very different than some of his albums of that type from the 70s! There's lots of electricity in the mix – electric piano from Horace Ott, bass from Richard Evans, and guitar from Wayne Bennett – mixed with sharp work on horns from Cliff Davis on tenor and flute, Murray Watson on trumpet, and Johnny Beard on baritone – three players who really flesh out the sound! The album's got some excellent stone funky classics – like "The Bird", "Groove Grease", and "Plain Brown Bag" – plus some surprisingly funky readings of standards like "Canadian Sunset" and "Mr Lucky", both made to sound super-nice, thanks to excellent work on bass and drums! Main Squeeze is one of the grooviest albums ever from Jimmy McGriff – a hard-wailing session that's filled with plenty of cooking lines on the organ, and a few especially funky tracks! The groove here is tight, short, and very sharp – strongly in the mode of other post-Sue sessions by McGriff – like The Worm or other Groove Merchant sides – with a style that's often much more focused than Jimmy's earlier years, and strongly turned towards the rhythms of the tunes! A few numbers are more familiar soul jazz, but these are nicely offset by the harder funk numbers of the record – like the romping, stomping break classic "The Main Squeeze", the totally groovy "The Worm Turns", and the fast-vamping "GMI". The group features Jimmy Ponder on guitar and Connie Lester on alto sax – and other titles include "The Sermon", "Stella By Starlight", and "The Blues Train To Georgia". Tailgunner has Jimmy McGriff in a very cool 70s mode – hitting some of the fuller, more soul-based styles that Johnny Hammond and Jimmy Smith were exploring in the middle of the decade – while still also displaying a hell of a talent on the organ as well! The album has extra keyboards from Pat Rebillot and Paul Griffin – which makes for a nice mix of organ and electric piano sounds, plus some occasional moog that's very nicely placed – all backed by a largeish group that has tight horns, and some occasional soul vocals from Al Downing and Denise Wooten. The vocals are often an augmentation of the tunes, and there's still plenty of room for solos by Jimmy in the middle – on titles that include "Tailgunner", "Flexible Flyer", "Sky Hawk", "Grandma's Toe Jam", and "Bullfrog". Fantasy/Dusty Groove, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare funk album from west coast legend Larry Williams – very different than his heavy R&B of the late 50s, or the brief soul comeback he had with Johnny Guitar Watson in the 60s – and instead a heavy groover with a trippy Cali sound! The record's got a sharp groove right from the start – a vibe that's a bit similar to some of the best Johnny Watson funk of the period – a slight jazzy undercurrent in the instrumentation, with wicked guitar and keyboard bits dancing around each other in the rhythms – often mixed with vocals that have a cool sort of electric feel, and topped with some great horn work from Fred Wesley on trombone and Maceo Parker on alto sax! Rudy Copeland plays keyboards on the album alongside Williams, the the set's got a bit of the feel of Rudy's lost Funky Blindman set – and in a way, also echoes the best strutting, sexy modes of Bootsy Collins too. The album's a surprising gem all the way through – a real lost chapter in Larry's career, and the kind of set that might have broken bigger, had he not died mysteriously a few years later. Titles include "Funky Force", "The Resurrection Of Funk", "One Thing Or The Other", "ATS Express", "How Can I Believe", and "Can't Dance To The Music (If It Ain't Got Funky Rhythm)". CD

The tracks on here aren't as beat or break-heavy as some of the material on other sample-driven collections we stock – but that's fine with us, as the tracks move into a sophisticated soul range that's always a pleasure to hear, bringing together the kind of well-produced 70s tracks that have shown up on series like Strange Games & Funky Things or Mellow Mellow, both of which have been longtime favorites with the DGA crowd! Titles include "Sweet Taste Of Sin" by Dennis Coffey, "I'll See You In Hell First" by Phillip Mitchell, "Do It To Me Now" by Fatback, "Don't Risk Your Happiness On Foolishness" by Fantastic Four, "Killing Time" by Natural Essence, "Your Love Is My Desire" by Eramus Hall, "Baby Get Down" by Eddie McLoyd, "Set It Out" by The Detroit Emeralds, "Love Starved" by Shirley Brown, "I'm Gonna Have To Tell Her" by Isaac Hayes, "If I Had The Power" by Johnny Guitar Watson, and "I Got To Have Your Love Now" by Caesar Frazier. LP, Vinyl record album
