Johnny AdamsI Won't Cry – The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The best work ever from the great Johnny Adams – a Crescent City soul singer with a hell of a lot of power, brought into wonderfully strong focus here on these early recordings for the Ric & Ron label! Johnny recorded later in Nashville and Jackson, but he's never sounded better than on these early sides – which have a depth of feeling and timeless power that we'd rank right up there with some of the most important names during the early years of soul. The material is nicely free of overdone New Orleans styles – and instead has this care and class that really reaches out from the roots of the material, to showcase Johnny as a singer with a great deal of care and class, but one who's still able to let loose in the best deep soul modes too. Adams hardly ever got the chart coverage he should have deserved – but this 24 track set will more than support his strong legacy – with detailed notes, and a stunning array of tracks that include "Closer To You", "Teach Me To Forget", "Who You Are", "Showdown", "A Losing Battle", "Life Is Just A Struggle", "Cold Cold Heart", "Coming Around The Mountain", and "Nowhere To Go". Johnny AlfEu e A Bossa – Ao Vivo ... CD
Rob (Brazil), 2000. Used ... $6.99
A great recent live set by one of the founding fathers of bossa nova! Alf actually predated most of the bossa stars, and began his career as a romantic singer/pianist in the 50s – but the strength of his body of work has always been his bossa compositions, many of which are nicely reprised in this recent live set, recorded to celebrate Alf's 40th anniversary of working with the music. Backing is by a small combo, with sax, bass, and drums backing up Alf's piano. Titles include "Plexus", "Ilusao A Toa", "Oxum", "O Grande Amor", "E Ai?", and "Eu E A Brisa". CD

Johnny AlfSerie 2 Em 1 – Rapaz De Bem/Diagonal ... CD
RCA (Brazil), 1961/1964. Used ... $19.99
Two classic bossa albums from the great Johnny Alf! Alf was a key part of the bossa scene in Brazil – an important singer in the pre-bossa years, with a vocal style that linked older traditions with the newer sound of the early 60s. Alf was also an excellent songwriter – and his contributions to the bossa canon number with those of Jobim, Joao Gilberto, or Marcos Valle. The CD features 2 great albums – one from 1961, and one from 1964 – both of which have Alf singing with jazzy backings that work perfectly with his voice. There's a total of 24 cuts in all, and titles include "Moca Flor", "Triste Noturno", "Ceu E Mar", "Rapaz De Bem", "Ilusao A Toa", "Vem", "O Que E Amar", "Termos De Cancao", and "Disa". CD

Johnny BristolStrangers (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atlantic/P-Vine (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $22.99
Excellent smooth soul from Johnny Bristol – working here in territory that's a lot more sophisticated than his earlier work, in the same vein as smooth modern soul singers like Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware, or Prince Phillip Mitchell! The album's got a sweet warm feel – and the richness of the songwriting and vocals make us wonder why Johnny wasn't a bigger star on his own – because each new track is a gem, and the album's got a quality level to match the best of the biggest names of the 70s! However, it's also gems like this that keep us digging through the history of soul music – looking under the surface of the big stars to find excellent work from "almost rans" like Johnny! Cuts include "Strangers In The Dark Corners", "I'm Waiting On Love", "When The Fire Is Burning", "If You Ever Need Somebody", "You Can't Have Love (Without Complications)", and "She's So Amazing". Johnny CashBear's Sonic Journals – Live At The Carousel Ballroom – April 24, 1968 ... CD
BMG, 1968. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Rare live work from Johnny Cash – recorded right at the height of his late 60s fame on Columbia Records, but with a style that nicely takes his sound back to its roots! June Carter joins Cash at a few points in the performance – but most of the set jus has Johnny working with the Tennessee Three, in that spare chugging groove the group first developed when Cash was starting to record at Sun Records – presented here in a nicely unfettered way, as a contrast to some of his studio work for Columbia during the same period. The set's got 28 tracks in all – a nice mix of classics and other numbers – with titles that include "Bad News", "Jackson", "Long Black Veil", "Lorena", "Old Apache Squaw", "Guess Things Happen That Way", "Going To Memphis", "Orange Blossom Special", "Forty Shades Of Green", "Don't Take Your Guns To Town", "Ring Of Fire", "Long Legged Guitar Pickin Man", "Foggy Mountain Top", and "Wildwood Flower". ✨✧ Johnny CashJohnny Cash At Folsom Prison ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+ ... $59.99
One of the greatest live albums ever, and probably THE best album Johnny Cash ever recorded! In 1969 Cash had more angst than you could shake a stick at – he just kicked drugs, and he hadn't had a big hit in years, so his respectful and thoughtful empathy for the audience of inmates not only cemented his persona as the real deal, but carries an air of dizzying emotion throughout the set. Appropriately filled with his darkest tunes, Folsom is one of the few cases in which a live recording of a hitmakers catalog is stronger and more vital than the studio versions. Includes "Folsom Prison Blues", "Dark As A Dungeon", "Cocaine Blues", "25 Minutes To Go", "Orange Blossom Special", "The Long Black Veil", "Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog", plus "Jackson" and "Give My Love To Rose" featuring June Carter. Johnny ClarkeCreation Rebel ... LP
17 North Parade, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 39.98
Fantastic work from Johnny Clarke – one of the younger Jamaican vocalists to emerge in the 70s – given that he started recording at a time when the music had already crossed the Atlantic and was making some big global waves – leaving it to singers like Johnny to bring the whole sound back to the roots! Clarke's got this moody, almost mysterious way of singing – yet a vibe that's every bit as soulful as some of the more straightforward vocalists of the generation before – and that moody approach makes for a perfect blend with the gritty production work of Bunny Striker Lee, which often has the bass end of the speakers blasting out as much as the higher, warmer waves of sound from Johnny. This double-length collection might be the best we've ever seen on Clarke from the classic years – and it features great notes and detail, in the top-shelf 17 North Parade style. Titles include "Enter Into His Gates With Praise", "Age Is Growing", "Peace & Love In The Ghetto", "Fire & Brimstone A Go Burn The Wicked", "African People", "King In The Arena", "Blood Dunza", "Dread A Dread", "None Shall Escape The Judgement", "Jah Jah Bless Joshua", "Commercial Locks", "Move Out Of Babylon Rastaman", "Top Ranking", and "Roots Natty Congo". A great moment for Jamaican singer Johnny Clarke – who really got a chance to shine in the mainstream with this classic album for Virgin – a record that should have given Clarke the same kind of international fame as some of his contemporaries on Island Records! All the element here are right on the money – a lean rockers groove with instrumentation by The Agrovators – who beautifully balance a sense of craft and understatement that really lets Johnny shine in the spotlight! Bunny Lee produced, King Tubby mixed, and titles include "Rockers Time Now", "African Roots", "Satta Massagana", "Declaration Of Rights", "They Never Love Poor Marcus", "Natty Dreadlocks Stand Up Right", "Prophecy A-Fulfilled", and "Stop The Tribal War". One of the best boogaloo sessions of the late 60s – and an early expression of genius from Johnny Colon! The album's got an electric bass sitting right at the middle – plucking with strong and soulful lines that set the pace for the record from the very first note. Johnny's hip young group really cooks with a lot of energy, dancing around the rhythms with a tight blend of piano, trombone, and soulful vocals – and nearly every cut's a winner, making the album cook all the way through with a mix of Spanish and English themes. Titles include "You Gotta Love Me", "Mezclodo", "Oyelo", "New Cha", and "The Line Dance". CD

Impulse, 1963. Used ... $2.99
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at another level, the album's got a great approach to Coltrane's gentler side, one that wasn't showing up on a lot of his Impulse albums of the time. Overall, the album's got an extremely haunting quality, and McCoy Tyner's piano adds as much to Hartman's hip voice as Coltrane's mellow tenor. Titles include some well-chosen moody standards – including "Lush Life", "Dedicated To You", and "Autumn Serenade". CD

Johnny DankworthCollaboration ... LP
Saga (UK), Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A slightly more serious affair from Brit jazzman Johnny Dankworth – and a set that points towards some of the soundtrack albums he'd cut in the 60s! There's a modern jazz-meets-classical feel here – as Dankworth's larger group of players is augmented by some fuller strings from the London Philharmonic – blended together surprisingly well, so that Johnny's hip modernists fall right into play with the orchestrations! Group members include Peter King on alto sax, Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Tony Russell on trombone, Kenny Clare on drums, and Dudley Moore on piano – and titles include the extended compositions "Ebony Concerto" – which features guest work from Ronnie Ross on baritone and Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet – plus "Rendezvous" and "Improvisations For Jazz Band & Symphony Orchestra". Johnny DankworthWhat The Dickens ... LP
Fontana, 1963. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A record that's way better than you might guess – and a key document of the creative orchestrations of the great John Dankworth! The set features tunes inspired by the writings of Charles Dickens – but the writing and interpretation is 60s modern all the way through – thanks to a crack lineup that includes Tubby Hayes and Dick Morriseey on tenors, Ronnie Ross on baritone, Tony Coe on clarinet, Kenny Wheeler and Jimmy Deuchar on trumpets, and Dankworth himself on some mighty nice alto! The session swings strongly – and surprisingly nice solos dart out amidst the otherwise goofy concept of the record – thanks to Dankworth's hand for a good arrangement and a nice sense of swing! Titles include "Weller Never Did", "The Prologue", "Ghosts", "The Artful Dodger", and "Dodson & Fogg". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1959. Used ... $7.99
Duke Ellington makes a rare Verve appearance on this classic album – and works strongly in the mode of earlier sides recorded for the label by Johnny Hodges! There's a relaxed, small group feel going on here – one that's a bit different than some of the tighter Ellington work on Columbia during the 50s, and which almost paves the way for some of the more intimate piano sides that Duke would record during the 60s. In a way, Hodges is almost at the lead – given how comfortable he is here in a Verve setting – and other players include Harry Edison on trumpet, Les Spann on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Jo Jones on drums. The real charm, as always, is Hodges' solos, lean, mean, raspy, and soulful – and titles include "Weary Blues", "Royal Garden Blues", "Loveless Love", "St Louis Blues", and "Wabash Blues". CD

Verve (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $13.99
A great little session that builds on the strength of Johnny Hodges' small group 50s sessions for Verve – and which lets Duke Ellington in on some of the action! The format is nicely stripped-down throughout – featuring Hodges in sextet and septet formation with players who include Ben Webster on tenor, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Les Spann on flute, Lawrence Brown on trombone, and Jo Jones on drums. Surprisingly, Duke's actually only on piano on three tracks on the album – Billy Strayhorn handles keys on the other – but the session's still a great example of small combo Ellingtonia at its best, the special way Ellington players could extrapolate his ideas into a leaner formation on a record like this! Titles include "Ruint", "Stompy Jones", "Big Shoe", "Going Up", "Just A Memory", and "You Need to Rock". CD

Mercury, 1957. Very Good+ ... $14.99
John, aka Johnny Frigo, who's best known to our set for the rare dynamite jazz dance sides he recorded later on, and to the jazz world at large for his work as a bassist, leads a small group on this rare, early full length for Mercury as as a leader on his first instrument – the violin! It's a pretty sweet set, and really not at all the token late 50s swing set you'd expect from the title, and owes as much or more to the bop scene at the time. Frigo's lead violin gives the tunes kind of a cinematic sweep – and he's accompanied by Dick Marx on piano, Ray Brown on bass, Norm Jeffries on drums and others. Tracks include "What A Difference A Day Made", "Polka Dots And Moon Beams", "Blue Orchids", "Moonlight In Vermont", "Is Love Good To Me" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A later entry in the run of Johnny Griffin albums recorded overseas – and one that's very much in the openly-blown style of his classics from the 60s and 70s! As with some of those, the great Kenny Drew works alongside Griffin on piano – and the pair really step out on familiar tunes taken at very extended stretches – so that the long solo passages almost make for mini-songs themselves within the familiar melodies! Argo/Universal (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... $13.99
Excellent early work by Johnny Griffin – a set that's a bit more obscure than some of his Blue Note classics to come, and which was recorded on the Chicago hometown scene from which he first sprang! The group here is a quartet – with Junior Mance on piano and Wilbur Ware on bass – the same lineup that graced the legendary Chicago Sound album under Ware's own name, which was issued on Riverside – a record that shares a lot with this one in its mix of soul and modernism, new ideas just brimming over from all of the young players involved. The album's overflowing with great tenor work from Griffin – angular, imaginative, and really breaking out of tenor modes of the early 50s. Original titles include "Lollypop", "Satin Wrap", "Riff Raff", and "Bee-Ees" – and the group does some nice work on a few mellower ballads as well! CD

A very very cool record – an unusual take on the music to The Connection – that hip early 60s play that featured a more famous version of the soundtrack on Blue Note Records! This version's much more obscure – part of a "localization" that occurred when the play would travel from town to town – and it features a Detroit-based recording, headed by keyboardist Johnny Griffith – who also recorded famously for Motown and RCA! Griffith's playing electric piano here, which really changes the vibe of the music – and the players are supposedly a host of Motown studio musicians – playing jazz here, but with a nice funky soul undercurrent. The group has two guitars, which really kicks in nicely with the rhythms under the horns – and titles include "Wiggling", "Music Forever", "Time To Smile", "O.D. This is the first album that Johnny recorded with Larry Mizell, cut right before the pair of them went onto do the landmark Gears album. While this one never became as famous as Gears, it's got some fantastic moments that are every bit as great – a perfect blend of Mizell's spacey fusion and Hammond's fiercely soulful soloing, with lots of great jazzy changes to keep the pace fresh throughout. One of our favorite albums of all time – and a record that just gets better and better the more we listen to it – and we've listened to it for years! Johnny "Hammond" Smith began his career as a simple soul jazz organist – but by the time of this album, he'd teamed up with the mighty Larry Mizell, the genius arranger/producer who'd breathed new life into the careers of Donald Byrd and Bobbi Humphrey. Mizell works with Hammond in the same way he does with other jazz artists – by taking a groove that works best with their solo style, and slowly layering other instrumentation and effects on top of it, so that when the solo kicks in, it's supported on waves and waves of funky sounds and soulful grooves. Mizell and his brother Fonce both play keyboards on the record, and the rest of the group includes monster fusion players like Harvey Mason, Roger Glenn, Hadley Caliman, and Jerry Peters. The real treat is Johnny, though – as his solos are heavenly, the best of his 70s work, stripped mean and lean, laid in at just the right points. Includes the breakbeat classic "Shifting Gears", the house classic "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", and funky numbers "Fantasy" and "Tell Me What To Do". This stunning version adds in some killer bonus tracks – 6 never-heard cuts from the Milestone vaults, including "Song For My Family", "Funky Native", "Detroit Rainbow", "Can't We Smile (alt)", and slow and fast versions of "A Child's Love". Excellent Kudu work from one of the greatest organists of the 70s – a player who really stretched out and opened up his groove during the decade! Johnny Hammond was also known as Johnny Hammond Smith back in the 60s – but by the time of his legendary run at Kudu/CTI, he'd hit a much different groove – working with tight soulful arrangements that really set him loose to run away on the keyboards – and hitting a lean, mean sound that was light years from his playing of the decade before. Arrangements here are by Bob James – with a super-dope style that's wonderful – kind of at the start of the mode that Hammond would hit with Larry Mizell – but also more of the harder, straight forward soul jazz of his Prestige years. Johnny HartmanAll Of Me (70s pressing) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Although the world always remembers Johnny Hartman best for his Impulse recordings with Coltrane, we've always dug some of his earlier stuff – like this album – because the sound's a bit rawer, and the style's got more of a kick! The magical Hartman voice is presented in two great settings – one a small orchestra directed by Frank Hunter, the other an even cooler group headed by Ernie Wilkins – with great horn work from players who include Anthony Ortega, Howard McGhee, Jerome Richardson, and Lucky Thompson! The tracks are familiar, but done with that dusky Hartman style – and titles include "I Could Make You Care", "The Lamp Is Low", "Stella By Starlight", "All Of Me", and a very haunting rendition of "The End Of A Love Affair". ✨✧ Johnny HartmanFor Trane ... CD
Blue Note, 1972. Used ... $3.99
Originally recorded and released only in Japan, and finally out now in the US – this is one of Johnny Hartman's greatest recordings, and perhaps his strongest jazz session ever! The backing is fantastic, and Johnny's deep voice opens up to new depths on this batch of standards all interpreted by Coltrane. The 'Trane reference is not incidental, either, because Johnny really hits a new level on this material, and breaks out of his usual sleepy style of singing, into a more free, more modal groove. Titles include "Summertime", "Nature Boy", "Violets For Your Furs", and "On Green Dolphin Street". CD

Johnny HartmanI Just Dropped By To Say Hello ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used ... $5.99
A beautiful album of dark-hued vocals – sung by Johnny Hartman with a quality that's as smokey as the image of him with a cigarette on the cover! The album set a whole new standard for male vocal jazz in the 60s – and is a distillation and refinement of earlier ideas in music by Billy Eckstine, taken down to more personal and fluid levels by Hartman – and recorded here with great small group baking that includes Illinois Jacquet on tenor, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The vibe is very mellow, but never sloppy or sleepy – and titles include "Charade", "In The Wee Small Hours", "Stairway To the Stars", "Kiss & Run", "Our Time", "Don't You Know I Care", "If I'm Lucky", and "Don't Call It Love". Impulse, 1966. Used ... $2.99
An excellent batch of rare material by vocalist Johnny Hartman, and a very strong set of tracks that shows a side of his work that's often ignored! Usually, Hartman gets cited for his slow, moody, syrupy sound – such as that which he used in his classic recordings with Coltrane. However, we really dig the side that's exposed on this CD – the shorter, livelier, more uptempo jazz numbers, done with a swing that you don't normally get with Johnny, and proof that he really was a tremendously versatile singer. There's 17 cuts on here, culled from 2 rare albums on ABC, and they show Hartman in a completely new light. Titles include "Fools Rush In", "Down In The Depths", "Bidin' My Time", "The More I See You", "Once In A While", "That Old Black Magic", and a very groovy version of "Girl Talk", with an excellent monologue by Johnny! Verve (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... $13.99
Blues-a-plenty, but still pretty darn jazzy too – as the "blues" in the title is just Verve's code for the way the album's put together – loose, unstructured, and a great format for Johnny Hodges to do some wonderful blowing on alto sax! The album also features strong work from Ben Webster, too – whose tone is perfect for the late nite vibe of the record – and other players include Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Vic Dickenson on trombone, Billy Strayhorn on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Sam Woodyard on drums – kind of an Ellington small combo, relaxing here in a wonderfully intimate setting. The sound is beautiful, and the album's one of Hodges' best-ever for Verve – with cuts that include "Cool Your Motor", "Honey Hill", "Saturday Afternoon Blues", and "I Didn't Know About You". CD

A really great live set from alto genius Johnny Hodges – a set that's right up there with some of his best studio albums on Verve at the time! As with those records, Johnny's taking a slight sidestep from the world of Duke Ellington here – working with similar material and familiar players, but also really stretching out on these beautiful solos that focus on his warm, raspy charm on the alto – that quality that made Hodges as important to the sound of mid 50s jazz as Ben Webster or Lester Young on the tenor! The group's a septet, and other players include Lawrence Brown on trombone, Harry Carney on baritone, Al Williams on piano, and Ray Nance on cornet – on titles that include "All Of Me", "Blues For Madeline", "Solitude", "Mood Indigo", "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me", "Jeep's Blues", "Rockin In Rhythm, and a nice long take on "Perdido". The style is nothing fancy, but Hodges' tone on these mid 60s Verve sides is always right on the money – soulful but not overdone, and put forth with just the right amount of economy. A lovely little set from Johnny Keating – in his best early mode that's partly jazz, and partly mood music – and all great all the way through! Keating's work always had a percussive approach – even when straight – and here, it's applied to a set of tracks that crackle with the best approaches used on the RCA percussion sets of the time – possibly even better, as the overall approach is a bit more dynamic! Johnny MathisOpen Fire Two Guitars (Gold CD) ... CD
Columbia, 1958. Used ... $11.99
Sublime early work from Johnny Mathis – a session that really shows the jazzy charm he had at the start! The setting is as spare as you might guess from the title – no large orchestra, and instead just two guitars (played by Tony Mottola and Al Caiola) supporting Johnny's vocals in a very open-ended sort of way! Mathis' approach to the session is amazing – really stretching out with the lack of traditional structure, and really working those amazing tones and phrasings at a level that he would hardly ever match again on record. Titles include "Please Be Kind", "Embraceable You", "Open Fire", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "You'll Never Know", and "I'm Just A Boy In Love". CD
(Out of print gold CD Collector's edition Master Sound SBM pressing. Does not include slipcase.)

Johnny MathisPeople/Impossible Dream/Love Theme From Romeo & Juliet/Give Me Your Love For Christmas ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $16.99
Four different albums from Johnny Mathis – all of which have a relatively unique pedigree! First up are the records People and The Impossible Dream – different 1969 albums from Johnny Mathis – both featuring material recorded earlier in the decade, during his time with Mercury Records! Evidently, Mathis got the rights to retain the masters, which he did – and allowed Columbia to issue some of the material on these two albums that offer a great look at the years before Johnny's mature return to the label in the late 60s. Many of the tunes here are mid 60s numbers, mixed with a few standards – and the backings have that quiet burning style that you'd recognize instantly from Mathis' earlier years, in ways that are a bit different than the modes he was then hitting in his new recordings. Strings often figure heavily, with Glenn Osser balancing things out nicely – and titles include "So Nice", "I Will Wait For You", "Laura", "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars", "More", "Sunny", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "On A Clear Day", "The Very Thought Of You", "Eleanor Rigby", "Go Away Little Girl", and "Moment To Moment". Love Theme From Romeo & Juliet has Johnny Mathis taking on the title tune of the famous film, and also dipping into a mix of other soundtrack numbers from the time – plus a bit of pop material as well! As with other Mathis albums from this stretch, we really love the selection of tunes – penned by Michel Legrand, Francis Lai, Nilsson, and other songwriters we love so much from the generation – writers who really get Johnny past the familiar styles of his early hits. Ernie Freeman did some of the arrangements – which makes for a nice change – and titles include "Live For Life", "Without Her", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Love Me Tonight", "Didn't We", "We", "The World I Threw Away", and "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In". Last up is Give Me Your Love For Christmas – a late 60s Christmas classic from Johnny Mathis – one that's in a nicely different mode from his earlier album of seasonal songs, and which really shows the way that the maturing Mathis was moving towards a different vibe as the 70s moved in! The tunes here are a good mix of more obscure numbers and well-chosen covers – all delivered with the kind of charm that makes Johnny such a great one to put on the turntable in the month of December – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Give Me Your Love For Christmas", "Do You Hear What I Hear", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "My Favorite Things", "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve", "Calypso Noel", and "Christmas Day". Johnny MathisShadow Of Your Smile ... LP
Mercury, 1966. Very Good ... $1.99
Groovy Mercury Records work from Johnny Mathis – a record that has the singer both hitting classic modes, and stretching out towards some of the hip changes in 60s music as well! The mix of tunes is very nice – with a few Beatles tunes, some bossa tracks, and a few more standard numbers to round out the mix – all arranged with some inventive rhythms by John Pisano, Glenn Osser, Jack Elliott, and Tony Osborne – in ways that make for a nice sense of variety throughout the record. Titles include a great reading of "The Shadow Of Your Smile" – plus "Quiet Nights", "Michelle", "Taste Of Honey", "Melinda", "Come Back To Me", "Something's Coming", and "Moment To Moment". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some ring and edge wear, tape remnants and peeling at the spine, and a small split in the bottom seam.)

Great arrangements really make this one sparkle – thanks to backings from Allyn Ferguson, done in that perfect mix of soft strings and shimmering brass that seems to work best for the vocals of Johnny Mathis! The album's got a feel that's full, but never in a too-lush or sleepy way – that perfect balance you find on Johnny's key classics from the early years – of which this album is certainly a real standout. Ferguson's backings have a subtle sense of drama, but never overdone – and titles include "Over The Weekend", "More", "You Love Me", "Poinciana", "The Touch Of Your Lips", and "Just Move Along Meadowlark". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red label pressing. Cover has a punch-hole and light aging on the back, but is nice overall.)

Johnny MathisUp Up & Away/Love Is Blue/Those Were The Days/Sings The Music Of Bert Kaempfert ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 22.99
A quartet of albums from Johnny Mathis – served up here in a special 2CD set! Up Up & Away is Mathis' first set back at Columbia after a brief hiatus – a record that shows a newly mature style that's wonderfully suited for Johnny's amazing voice! Mathis tones are every bit as perfect as before – but he's also got a maturing approach to the lyrics that's really nice – maybe a bit more pause, or thoughtfulness, which only increases the sense of feeling in the tunes. Of course, the great charts by Glenn Osser also help too – lush, but never sleepy, and showing their own sort of maturation too. Titles include "Misty Roses", "Drifting", "When I Look In Your Eyes", "I Thought Of You Last Night", "Far Above Cayuga's Waters", and "Where Are The Words". Love Is Blue is a late 60s set that furthers the maturing Mathis modes of his return to Columbia Records – a set that's filled with great adult pop numbers from the time, recast by Johnny Mathis in his trademark vocal mode! There's a fair bit of Bacharach in the mix – which makes for a meeting of two pop vocal generations in one sweet album – and the rest of the tunes are pretty hip too, with work by Henry Mancini, Jimmy Webb, and others. Strings figure into most of the arrangements – but never in a sleepy way – and titles include "Walk On By", "Venus", "Love Is Blue", "Never My Love", "Moon River", "I Say A Little Prayer", "The Look Of Love", and "Don't Go Breakin My Heart". Those Were The Days is a title tune sung famously by Mathis as a single – but even better are the rest of the tracks on the set – a cool batch of 60s numbers that really show Johnny stretching out comfortably with some new material, but never in ways that mess with his amazing vocal approach at all! Backings often have a gentle dip underneath the strings – letting Mathis pick up some slight groovy rhythms at points, on titles that include "Light My Fire", "59th Street Bridge Song", "This Guy's In Love With You", "You Make Me Think About You", "The World I Used To Know", and "Turn Around Look At Me". Last up is Sings The Music Of Bert Kaempfert – a special record devoted to the songs of German maestro Bert, best known as an instrumental star on record, but also a key songwriter for many classics of the 60s. Johnny's vocals are a great fit for the gentle flow and slow-stepping rhythms of the Kaempfert tunes – and titles include "Strangers In The Night", "Danke Schon", "Wonderland By Night", "Spanish Eyes", "Lady", "LOVE", and "Remember When". Mercury, 1964. Near Mint- ... $3.99
An album for Mercury that features Mathis working with arranger Allyn Ferguson – who often gives Johnny the same sort of shimmering charts he might get from Glenn Osser, but who takes a bit more liberties here with the "make believe" modes promised in the title! Lots of the tunes are numbers from shows – but those of a whimsical, wistful variety – postwar tunes with a fantasy vibe that's perfect for the inherent sense of longing in Mathis' vocals. Titles include "Shangri La", "House Of Flowers", "Beyond The Sea", "Camelot", "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows", "Sands Of Time", and "When You Wish Upon A Star". LP, Vinyl record album
