John ZornBig Gundown – John Zorn Plays The Music Of Ennio Morricone ... CD
Icon/Nonesuch, 1985. Used ... $5.99
A groundbreaking album, put together by Zorn and a group of downtown New York hipsters, as a fitting hommage to the genius of Ennio Morricone! The track list sticks to mostly the bigger known numbers, and the album's got a darkness that we'd actually say was a bit out of place, considering the choice of tracks – but the groups formed by Zorn do a pretty good job of breathing new life into some of the tracks, and the album was a key moment in the recognition of Morricone as one of the century's greatest composers. Players include Robert Quine, Tim Berne, Arto Lindsay, Jim Staley, Bill Frisell, Christian Marclay, Anton Fier, and even Big John Patton. Titles include "Erotico", "Once Upon A Time In The West", "Giu La Testa", "Battle Of Algiers", and "The Big Gundown". CD

John ZornJohn Zorn's Olympiad Vol 2 – Fencing 1978 ... CD
Tzadik, 1978. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
John Zorn's been known for many modes over the years – but back at the start of his long career on the downtown scene in New York, one of his biggest contributions was the introduction of the "game piece" to improvised music! The works were compositional, but had a sense of chance in the way the musicians interacted – so that every single performance was something else entirely – as you'll hear on these two rare recordings of "Fencing", both from 1978, each with a different lineup! The first recording was done at Bard, and features Zorn on saxes with a trio of guitarists – Duck Baker, Eugene Chadbourne, and Randy Hutton – all players whose creative approach to their instrument makes for a wonderfully varied sense of sound! The second recording has a different vibe – with Zorn using his reeds in varied ways alongside guitar from Chadbourne and violin from Polly Bradfield – a wonderful player who really gets to shine here. John ZornNaked City ... CD
Elektra, 1989. Used ... $8.99
The first, and arguably the best, of John Zorn's Naked City albums. The sound is extremely intense, and represents a blinding blend of influences, most of which Zorn had been showcasing in more easy going settings on previous albums. The core group includes Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Fred Frith, and Joey Baron – plus a guest appearance by Yamatsuka Eye. Hard to find on vinyl, and with the titles "Demon Sanctuary", "Speedball", "James Bond Theme", "Ingenous Ejaculation", "I Want To Live", and "Latin Quarter". CD

John ZornSpillane ... CD
Elektra/Nonesuch, 1987. Used ... $9.99
One of our favorite Zorn "tribute" albums from the 80s – in this case a set of long pastiche tracks that pays hommage to pulp writer Mickey Spillane, Albert Collins, and the film Forbidden Fruit. The track "Spillane" is the best – a side-long number that features text by Arto Lindsay, plus John Lurie as the voice of Mike Hammer – over instrumentation by Bill Frisell, Anthony Coleman, Zorn, Jim Staley, Bob James, and Bobby Previte. "Two Lane Highway" is a showcase for solo work by Albert Collins, but Zorn nicely messes things up a lot with a New York downtown approach that includes John Patton, Bobby Previte, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Wayne Horvitz. "Forbidden Fruit" features the Kronos Quartet augmented with voice by Ohta Hiromi and turntables by Christian Marclay! Also includes "Spillane" & "Two Lane Highway". CD

John Zorn & Bill LaswellCleansing ... CD
Tzadik, 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
John Zorn and Bill Laswell have crossed musical paths over over the years, and this set is certainly not the first time they've recorded together – yet there's also this wonderful sense of rebirth in the music, maybe the cleansing hinted at in the title – as things really go back to the basics of improvisation that began the career of the two artists, but with a sound that's very different than the past! Zorn is on alto and Laswell is on electric bass – and the tracks are all long improvisations that really take their time to find the right space – never over-conceived or forcing any sort of an agenda – just a natural, organic sonic progression in that hands of two improvisers who still have plenty of musical feathers left in their caps after all these years. Titles include "William Burroughs", "Brion Gysin", "Aleister Crowley", "Austin Osman Spare", and "Alejandro Jodorowsky". CD

John Zorn/John Medeski/Matt Hollenberg/Kenny GrohowskiNostradamus – The Death Of Satan ... CD
Tzadik, 2021. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
Really freewheeling sounds from this heavy power trio – a group with the structure of a jazz organ trio, but the ferocity of a group that dips heavily into hard rock too! As with previous entries in this series, John Zorn is the composer and "conductor" – but the real energy comes from the frenzied combination of John Medeski on organ, Matt Hollenberg on guitar, and Kenny Grobowski on drums – the last of whom is a non-stop powerhouse who pushes both players to new heights in their music – then knows just the right moment to drop back a bit, and let the keys and strings do their thing! Titles include "Chaos & Eternal Light", "Dark Angels", "From The Cave Of Treasures", "The Stygian Pool", "Seven Spirits", and "Melmoth". CD

One of Zorn's earliest, and certainly one of his best – the kind of album that made him a legend in the early days! Another side features Arto Lindsay on guitar and vocals, Anton Fier on drums, and Zorn on all the above horns. Side three features Wayne Horvitz on organ and electronics and Ikue Mori on drums – and even includes a "James Bond Trilogy"! Side four features Whiz Kid on turntables, ME Miller on drums and congas! ✨✧ John Zorn/Bill Frisell/John Medeski/Brian Marsella/Kenny WollesenPerchance To Dream ... CD
Tzadik, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The poetry of the title isn't lost on the group on the record – nor is the "sleep" reference that the famous phrase would imply – as the quartet work in much mellower territory than on some of the other Zorn-directed projects of this nature on Tzadik in recent years – often with a beautifully minimal and hypnotic vibe! The group features twin keyboards – organ from John Medeski, and piano and Fender Rhodes from Brian Marsella – both players who loop around each other in nice ways, and get these slight contributions from the guitar of Bill Frisell and drums of Kenny Wollesen – both musicians who really let the keys take the lead, almost like a small combo jam version of Terry Riley territory. Beautiful throughout – with titles that include "A Secret Twilight", "Eventide", "Introit", "Lacrimosa", and "Midnight Vespers". CD

✨✧ John ZornJohn Zorn New Masada Quartet ... CD
Tzadik, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great back to basics moment from the legendary John Zorn – a set that features a tight quartet moving through older themes from his larger Masada project – but with a strongly jazz-based vibe that we don't always hear from Zorn on record in recent years! There's a swing to the tracks at points that's quite a surprise – but also a reminder that first and foremost, Zorn is a jazz musician, and an experimentalist after that – creating beautiful music here on alto sax, alongside Julian Lage on guitar, Jorge Roeder on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums. Many titles have the exotic currents you'd expect from Masada, the record's definitely got some freer improvisation at points, and tunes include "Hath Arob", "Rigal", "Tharsis", "Tagriel", "Piram", and "Sansanah". Music by John Zorn, but performed by a trio who really open up a different side of his sonic palette – the all-guitar group of Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, and Gyan Riley – all players who've worked with Zorn before, but who really seem to be in different territory here! Maybe it's the "garden" in the title – as there's moments that almost feel pastoral – as if modern jazz guitarists had taken inspiration from the instrumental interplay of bluegrass improvisation – but in a way that's not like bluegrass at all – instead full of all these unusual tonal energy, and really organic interplay between the strings. Titles include "Riverrun", "Legend", "The Zahir", "Orbus Teritus", "The Forking Path", and "The Secret Mirror". CD

John PattonMinor Swing (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1997. Used Gatefold ... $19.99 23.99
An amazing meeting of two unlikely talents – the classic Blue Note Hammond sound of John Patton, and the angular alto of improvisor John Zorn! The set's not as much of a surprise when you realize that Zorn had been a fan of Patton for years – and had used the organist on some of his key 80s projects, at a time when Patton had really fallent out of the limelight. As a way of returning the favor, Zorn produced this excellent album as part of Patton's comeback efforts in the late 90s – and without a doubt, it's one of Big John's best records since the 60s! Zorn's amazingly respectful of the classic Patton sound, and manages to create a setting of angular, modal grooves that really recalls the freshest, freest-thinking styles of the Blue Note years – with long tracks that let both players stretch out nicely – in a way that shows that Patton has lost none of his solo imagination on the Hammond, and which has Zorn playing soulfully and straight ahead, but with a wonderful edge that's almost like Benny Maupin or Tyrone Washington on Blue Note at the time! The rest of the group features Ed Cherry on guitar and Kenny Washington on drums – and titles include "B Men Thel", "Lite Hit", "The Way I Feel", "Tyrone", "Minor Swing", "The Rock", and "Along Came John". File this one next to your Patton Blue Notes – and you'll hardly notice the difference! CD

Eugene ChadbourneThere'll Be No Tears Tonight ... CD
Parachute/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
One of the most compelling albums ever recorded by guitarist Eugene Chadbourne – a set billed as "free improvised country and western bebop" – and which features Chadbourne serving up these wild variations on tunes by Carl Perkins, Roger Miller, David Allen Coe, Bobby Bare, Merle Haggard, and other country music legends! The album's much more Eugene than Nashville – although Chadbourne does sing lyrics on all of the tunes, but in a way that's very offbeat and hardly unlike the originals at all – as is his guitar work, which is acoustic and all twisted and turned up in all the offbeat phrasings you might expect! Much of the record is Chadbourne on vocals and electric dobro – but the set also features some drums by David Licht, saxes from John Zorn, and cello from Tom Cora. Titles include "The Last Word In Lonesome Is Me", "I'm The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised", "Georgia In A Jug", "Motel Time Again", "Dang Me", "Window Shopping", "Jealous Loving Heart", "Mr Record Man", and "Swingin Doors". A pretty wonderful little concept – Pat Metheny plays music composed by John Zorn – all at a level that resonates both with the wonderful modes we've been hearing from Zorn of late, and with the most adventurous modes of Metheny's early years! Pat's virtually solo on the set – save for some help from Antonio Sanchez on drums – and plays a range of different electric and acoustic guitars, plus sitar, piano, keyboards, bandoneon, percussion, and even a bit of flugelhorn too – instruments that create a rich tapestry of sounds and textures, often with these exotic musical moments that are a real change for Metheny! A seminal album from the 80s New York scene – not only because it brought some long-overdue attention to Sonny Clark (whose records were mostly out of print at the time), but also because it reminded the world that John Zorn could blow hardbop! The album features a set of classic Clark originals from the glory days of his Blue Note years – recast here by Zorn on alto sax, and a quartet that also features Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, Ray Drummond on bass, and Bobby Previte on drums. The energy's different than an older Sonny Clark record, but the sound is still plenty darn great – and titles include "Sonia", "Voodoo", "Sonny's Crib", "Nicely", "Minor Meeting", and "Cool Struttin".
