✨✧ Michael FranksPreviously Unavailable (aka Michael Franks) ... LP
John Hammond, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Later issue of the first album from Michael Franks – and a bit different than his later hits at Warner! The trademark Frank sound is definitely in place here – well-penned tunes, sung with cool compressed vocals and a slight jazzy tinge – but there's also a bit more of a folksy feel at times, a slightly earthier feel at points that's quite nice, and which almost links him a bit to the early work of Kenny Rankin. Arrangements are by Richard Markowitz, and backings are relatively spare and sometimes jazzy – with bits of flute and sax from Tom Scott, and some especially nice bass work from Max Bennett and Carol Kaye, whose round tones really help shape Michael's vocals. Titles include "Just Like Key Largo", "The King Of Oklahoma", "Born With The Moon In Virgo", "Little Sparrow", and "When Blackbirds Fly". LP, Vinyl record album

Beres HammondJust A Man (green vinyl pressing) (2024 Black Friday Release) ... LP
VP, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Sweet early work from Beres Hammond – working with producer Joe Gibbs and record in more of a groovy R&B mode – perhaps even more of a step into a modern soul vibe than his previous Soul Reggae LP – and it's a good one! The opening tracks takes it to most grandly orchestrated realm as the sound would go, nearing disco scale sweep to it, but most of the rest of the album has more laidback rhythms with charismatic, crossover ready vocals from Beres. Includes "Music Is A Positive Vibration", "John Crazy", "Do The World A Favour", "Just A Man", "I'm Lonely", "I'm In Love With You", "Let Me Love You Tonight and more. LP, Vinyl record album

John PattonAlong Came John ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1963. Used ... $12.99
A really unusual album from the mighty Hammond giant John Patton – as the set features two tenor players in the group, both of them great! The tenor's no stranger to the sublime keyboard work of Patton – but here, the great one gets help from both Fred Jackson and Harold Vick – both of whom are at their early 60s soul jazz best, able to play with a hard edge, but also some surprisingly complicated moments too – which really fits into the spirit of Patton's overall groove! The group also features great guitar from Grant Green – one of his key pairings with the organist – plus drums from the wonderful Ben Dixon, who's got a fluid, open approach to rhythm that really works well with John's basslines from the Hammond. Titles include "Gee Gee", "Pig Foots", "Spiffy Diffy", "Along Came John", and the classic modal groover "The Silver Meter". CD

A wonderfully wicked meeting of the minds – and a legendary bit of soul jazz from organist Big John Patton! The core of the record features the usual Patton groove – with John on Hammond, Grant Green on guitar, and Otis Finch on drums – but added to that mix is Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, making a rare appearance on an organ jazz session, with some wonderful results! The combination of vibes and organ is especially haunting – jangling a groove with a really modal feel, and creating a sound that instantly made this one stand out from the pack! Johnny Hammond SmithLegends Of Acid Jazz – Soul Flowers/Dirty Grape ... CD
Prestige, 1967/1968. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A key turning point for Johnny Hammond Smith – 2 hip albums from the latter half of the 60s, a time when he was really changing up his groove! First up is Soul Flowers, one of Johnny's most obscure records – and a great little album that's filled with short tracks played by a largeish group – all in a groove that's almost got a cop show feel! The album's got a gritty, dirty feel that's totally great – a nice change from Johnny's early 60s soul jazz, and a definite nod at the funk that would come in the 70s. There's twin tenors on the date from Houston Person and Earl Edwards – who often blow together on the heads, creating a mini-horn section sort of feel that then breaks up into more of a small combo mode as the set rolls on. Guitar is by the wonderful Wally Richardson, who works alongside electric bass from Jimmy Lewis – rumbling nicely next to Hammond's newly-lean sound on the organ. Added congas from Richard Landrum round out the set – and titles include the wonderful "NYPD", plus "Dirty Apple", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Tara's Theme", and "I Got A Woman". Dirty Grape is excellent work from Johnny Hammond Smith – a record that really lives up to the "dirty" in the title! The approach here is a bit like some of Jimmy McGriff's recordings at the end of the 60s – organ soloist riffing around on some short hard tracks, with a bit of electric bass in the mix to soup things up a bit, rhythm-wise! The players include Wally Richardson on guitar – whose solos and sound are almost as important to the date as Johnny Hammond's – plus the twin team of Houston Person and Earl Edwards on tenor, Fender bass by Jimmy Lewis, drums by John Harris, and added conga by Richard Landrum. Tracks include some very groovy numbers – like "Dirty Grape", "Animal Farm", and "Black Strap Molasses" – plus covers of "To Sir With Love", and "Love Is A Hurtin Thing". CD

Lonnie Smith/John AbercrombieAfro Blue ... CD
Music Masters, 1993. Used ... $14.99 17.99
That's Dr Lonnie Smith, to you – grooving greatly here on one of those sweet mid 90s sessions that really returned his organ talents to the jazz-buying public! The group on the date is co-led with guitarist John Abercrombie – a player whose work has graced soul jazz sets over the years, but who's also best known for the airier tones of his ECM recordings – tones that sometimes surface here, but which are then quickly turned into the more focused sounds needed to match Smith's clean lines on the Hammond! There's no bassist at all on the date – Lonnie handles most of that with the organ – drums are by Marvin Smitty Smith. Titles include "Impressions", "Greensleeves", "Afro Blue", and "Bessie's Blues" – all tributes to Coltrane, natch! CD

John TchicaiIn Monk's Mood (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2008. New Copy ... $19.99 29.99
John Tchicai plays the music of Thelonious Monk, and a few of his own tunes too – in a wonderful set that shows beautifully why we always look out for work from this enigmatic saxophonist! There's definitely a Monkish vibe to the record, but Tchicai's approach is often quite personal too – creating warmth where others might have kept things angular, or changing up the pacing of the tunes – so that he's always leaving a very strong imprint of his own on the recordings, and not just covering too-familiar Monk territory. Each tune has a slightly different execution – and many numbers have John stepping out sparely, blowing in the lead – but with some warmth and depth that's quite different than the coldness of his modern moments from years back. And there's also a bit of Hammond on the record – played by George Colligan, who also alternates on piano – and use of that instrument really makes for a fresh sound too – a wonderful change that's almost like some 60s soul jazz take on Monk. Bass is by Steve Laspina and drums are by Billy Drummond – and titles include "Monk's Mood", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Ugly Beauty", "Ruby My Dear", and "Cool Copy". Blue Note (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Oh Baby is right – as the album's one of the best Blue Note albums by Hammond legend Big John Patton – a perfect mix of funky organ and burning hardbop! The tracks hare are all originals penned for the album – mostly by Patton, but also by other group members – the kind of fresh grooves that made John's organ work for Blue Note really stand out from the rest of the 60s Hammond generation – very creative stuff, with occasional modern touches, and a rhythmic conception that's not only unusual, but which also really lets the soloists stretch out on their grooves! Players include Harold Vick on tenor, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Ben Dixon on drums, and Grant Green on guitar – and the album's about as sharp as you can get for a Blue Note organ session. Titles include "Fat Judy", "Each Time", "One To Twelve", and "Night Flight". CD

✨✧ John Barry/Alan HavenKnack & How To Get It ... LP
United Artists, 1965. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly groovy soundtrack that's also one of the best-ever scores written by John Barry – a masterpiece of jazzy scoring that never gets old! There's some wicked use of Hammond in the main theme – played by Brit jazzer Alan Haven – a catchy little groove that dances nicely as the record unfolds – over rhythms that feature a snapping snare that's equally great! Barry brings in just a touch of the James Bond boldness, then mixes it with these warmer jazz leanings – all in a blend that's quite unique, and which easily makes the score one of our favorites of the 60s. A young Michael Crawford sings a great vocal version of the theme – "The Knack" – and other tracks include "Photo Strip", "Doors & Bikes & Things", "Ecstasy", "Three On A Bed", and "Blues & Out". Insanely wonderful – and pretty darn rare! This album by John Patton was cut during the 60s, but never issued until the 80s – and even then, only briefly – yet it's easily one of our favorite records ever by this legendary Hammond player, thanks to lots of weird twists and turns! Although the record's led by Patton, it's more in the mad style of George Braith – who plays some wonderful sax on the session, in the manner of his excellent Laughing Soul album – a Prestige Records session cut with Patton and Grant Green around the same time. The vibe is very different than some of Patton's other Blue Notes – very rhythmically playful, and mixed with mad reed lines from Braith – with superbly sharp guitar lines from Grant Green, top trumpet work from Tommy Turrentine, and this great sense of skittish rhythm from the always-amazing drummer Ben Dixon. Titles include "Hot Sauce", "Bermuda Clay House", "Nicety", and "Blue John". CD

One of the coolest, hippest albums on Blue Note from organist John Patton – a set that really shows the Hammond giant taking on a new sense of direction – especially in his rhythms! The album's one of a few of John's to feature great drums from the massively overlooked Hugh Walker – a player who could really open up a tune, while still letting it swing – creating this sense of space that's really filled up by Patton's broad colors and tones on the keyboard, and by some mindblowing work on tenor sax by the equally overlooked Harold Alexander! The tunes have an open, flowing feel that's almost more in Larry Young territory – yet still retains the soul of Patton's other work too – and titles include "Soul Man", "Chittlings Con Carne", "Ding Dong", and "Congo Chant". The smoking debut of legendary UK bluesman John Mayall – and a live album at that! Although bluesy, the work here also has a fair bit of US R&B overtones – similar to those showing up in the beat group era work of Zoot Money, Georgie Fame, and others of the time – although with a style that's much rougher and rootsier than their work! Mayall plays plenty of Hammond and sings – and other instrumentation includes lots of raspy guitar next to bass, drums, and just a bit of alto sax – used to underscore some of the more R&B moments in the set. Titles inlcude "Crawling Up A Hill", "I Wanna Teach You Everything", "The Hoot Owl", "Doreen", "Chicago Line", and "What's The Matter With You". A wonderful tribute to the late Jack McDuff – the favorite jazz organist of Brian Charette, and a huge favorite of ours too! Brian plays the Hammond B3 with a style that doesn't try to copy any of McDuff's modes – which might be too hard anyway, given what a dynamic, flexible player Jack could be – and instead, he plays with a sense of individuality that really marks that contribution that the elder player made to jazz – really helping find a way to set the instrument free on paths that offered as much vivid, varied ways of expression as the saxophone or trumpet! There is a sax in the group – Cory Weeds, blowing tenor – and other players include Dave Sikula on guitar, and John Lee on drums – on titles that include "The Jolly Black Giant", "6:30 In The Morning", "Have You Met Joan", "Microcosmic Orbit", "Why'd You Have To Go & Lie To Me Boy", and "Early America". A group who take their name from the Hudson River Valley – beautifully pictured here on the front cover – and a quartet who work in an equally expansive array of sounds – all sharp elements of tone and timing from a lineup that features Jack DeJohnette on drums, John Scofield on guitar, Larry Grenadier on bass, and John Medeski on piano, Fender Rhodes, and Hammond! The Hudson influence doesn't just stop at the name, though – because all these upstate New York musicians often pay tribute to other artists who left the city for points north – Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, and The Band – each of whom gets a tribute track on the album. About half the set is originals by members of the group – and if we had to pick one instrument that seems to have the strongest voice in the group, it might be the guitar of Scofield – maybe in part because he can skirt the two different worlds so well. Blue Note, 1963. Sealed ... $24.99
Jimmy Smith serves up a bucket of soul here – on an album that's one of his last for Blue Note, and still very much in the strong trio mode that launched his work for the label! The group's that super-sharp early 60s combo of Jimmy's – with Quentin Warren on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums – both players who have a groove that's maybe a bit under-stated at times, but which really lets Smith dominate the record – on both the keys of the Hammond, and the great work he brings to the bass pedals too. The tracks are short, but very groovy – with a tighter sound than on some of Smith's early Blue Note trio albums, and the same kind of in-the-pocket sound that made his Crazy Baby album a big hit. Includes a very groovy remake of "John Brown's Body", the original groovers "Bucket" and "Sassy Mae", and a nice modal tune called "3 for 4". LP, Vinyl record album

Titles include "The Harlem Meer", "When Was", "Imagine – A Mosaic For John Lennon", "Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir", "Central Park At Sunset", and "Albert Ayler – A Meditation In Light". An incredible album from the man that changed the way the world hears the Hammond! This album was Larry Young's first for Blue Note – and it's a mindblowing batch of tunes that push the organ into realms that had never been heard of in jazz. Young's got a real penchant for a modal groove – no doubt inspired by his friend and sometimes collaborator John Coltrane – and he's working here with a totally hip group that includes Sam Rivers, Grant Green, and Elvin Jones. The tunes are amazing – dancing with delight as they push the envelope, but never go too far to get overindulgent – and the album's filled with classics that include Green's wonderful composition "Plaza De Toros", plus originals by Young like "Tyrone", "Backup", and "Ritha". Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2006. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Spiritual jazz both old and new – a collection that really gets past the obvious sides of the genre, and brings together a range of unusual work from the 70s onward! The tracks here are a great antidote to the well-traveled territory of labels like Impulse or Strata East Records – and are mostly from lesser-known sources that include tiny indies from the 80s, and a few ground breaking imprints from recent years! There's definitely a vibe here that holds strongly in the spirit of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, and other innovators from the end of the 60s – but the sound is especially fresh given the obscurity of the tunes. Titles include "For Our Souls" by Doug Hammond, "Amazona" by Francisco Mora Catlett, "The Mystery Of Man" by Sarah Vaughan, "Better Than That" by Nomo, "Gol E Gandom" by Lloyd Miller, "Motherless Child" by Brother Ah, "A Love Supreme" by Dwight Trible, "Why" by Woody Shaw with Carter Jefferson, "Rwanda" by Francis Bebey, "Come Sunday" by Stanley Cowell, and "En El Amanecer Del Tiempo". Righteous jazz, but with a bit of a funky twist too – a great selection of classics from the years when 60s soul jazz was reaching out with a new sense of pride and power, and finding a way embrace all of the musical changes that were coming its way! The music here is often by artists who might have been playing straighter standards, or bluesy organ numbers a few years before – but who here are set fire by the changes of the 60s – both at a musical level, and a political one – the latter in ways that resonate strongly even in the instrumental passages on the set! Cellar Live (Canada), 2024. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Blue Note/Water, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Smoking work on Hammond from Freddie Roach – a key player in the Blue Note lineup of the 60s, and a strong link between the label's soul jazz and modern sides! The sound here is a really beautiful one – partly in the organ/tenor mode forged by Baby Face Willette and John Patton in their early recordings for Blue Note, but also stretching out in that way that started to show up in Patton's later work, and in the seminal work from the time by Larry Young. Freddie's touch on the keys is really opening up here – clearly driven by some more original ideas that help push the album past the more R&B influenced sound of some of his earlier work. Players on the set include Joe Henderson on tenor, Eddie Wright on guitar, and Clarence Johnston on drums – and title cuts include "Brown Sugar", plus "All Night Long", "Have You Ever Had The Blues", and "The Right Time". A massive amount of early work by The Animals – brought together in one overstuffed package with some unreleased tracks as well! The group here have a great rough sound – much more bluesy than in later years, which turns out to be a perfect setting for the young Eric Burdon – whose vocals soar out wonderfully over a mix of original tunes and remakes of American classics by folks like Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley, and others! Producer Mickie Most really knows how to keep the right sort of edge on the tunes – lots of raw power in the instrumentation, especially the Hammond and guitar – and a stark, dark quality to Eric's vocals that went onto become the stuff of legend. Package features 40 tracks in all – with titles that include "I Believe To My Soul", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Club A Go Go", "For Miss Caulker", "Feel", "Boom Boom", "Don't Want Much", "It's My Life", "House Of The Rising Sun", "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place", and "I'm Gonna Change The World". 2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Side two is even better, and features Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side". A very well-done collection of Charlie Parker performances from the legendary Birdland nightclub – originally presented on radio, but cleaned up here with a great sense of sound! The mighty Symphony Sid can be heard introducing a few tracks, but the main focus is on the music – with the kind of razor-sharp solos that always made Parker a knockout, especially during these key early 50s years – and accompaniment from musicians who include Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell or John Lewis on piano, Kenny Clarke or Roy Haynes on drums, and even the surprising inclusion of organist Milt Buckner at one point! The music is definitely funky, but in a fresh way from Smith's early Blue Note albums – not retro organ jazz funk, but a 21st Century reworking of the mode – at a level that still has Smith showing off that wonderful sense of flow he developed in his post-Blue Note years, but bringing things back home with a sharper edge. An album that's maybe one of the least familiar Blue Note records to most jazz listeners – a set that was barely pressed up at the time, and reissued infrequently – yet which is a tremendous debut as a leader from tenorist Harold Vick! At the time of the album's release, Vick had been bringing all these amazing sounds to Hammond albums by Brother Jack McDuff – reed lines that were very different in phrasing and tone than the tenor sounds of players like Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt – and he continues that magic here, in a really wonderful group – with John Patton on the Hammond, Grant Green on guitar, and the mighty Ben Dixon on drums – a player with a loose touch that really fits Harold's unique sense of rhythm. Loma, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great album from the Yaya trio of Joshua Redman, Sam Yahel, and Brian Blade. Yahel plays Hammond organ on the set, and the format here is kind of like the late late Big John Patton and Larry Young albums for Blue Note – freer, more open grooves than the usual organ/tenor session, kind of an elliptical swing that's still very rooted in the soul jazz organ tradition, yet which also has a post-Coltrane sense of exploration. The setting is wonderful for Redman, who carves out some great solos on tenor and soprano, but the real star of the set is Yahel, whose organ work is sublime – with a tone and a style that we haven't heard executed this well in years! A real delight – the rare kind of new album that will please fans of classic Hammond grooves, yet also push the instrument to new heights of expression. Some of the most striking work we've ever heard from this legendary Italian group – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the power of their work in the 60s and 70s! The assemblage features important avant garde sounds from Ennio Morricone – and offers up a real look at the roots of the atonal and offbeat musical elements that he'd explore on his famous horror soundtracks – but in a setting that's right out there with the farthest reaches of the experimental scene at the time! As the group's name implies, there's a lot of improvisation going on here – played by musicians who include Morricone on trumpet, Frederic Rzewski on piano, Mario Bertoncini on percussion, John Heineman on trombone, Roland Kayn on Hammond and vibes, Franco Evangelisti on piano and percussion, and Ivan Vandor on tenor sax. Yet the sound is hardly free jazz, either – as there's more of a avant compositional vibe going on – a bit like the sense of chance in the music of John Cage, especially as the instruments and players shift from track to track. Titles include "Quartetto", "Trio Di Fiati", "Improvvisazione Per Cinque", "Improvvisazione Per Otto", "RKBA 1675/1", and the haunting "Cantata", which just features voices processed through filters and reverb! Morricone's really coming into his own here – and uses some of the drama of his western work, blended with his growing ability to craft a simple, haunting melody – often the kind of dreamy tune you'd hardly expect to find in a movie like this! A few tense moments move into a slight atonal range – but most numbers have that cool, compressed style that made Morricone so great in the late 60s – with bits of Hammond, guitar, strings, and even some slight horns. The set's got two vocal numbers sung by Jackie Lynton – titles include "La Ballata Di Hank McCain", "Come Quando Fuori Piove", "Irene", "Defilee", "Gli Intoccabili", "Rosemary", "Come Lei", and "Sogno Dopo Sogno". Columbia/Jazzotheque (France), 1951/1953. Used ... Out Of Stock
The album may well be worth it, just to hear Bird playing with a Hammond – but the whole thing's great, and titles include "Cool Blues", "Star Eyes", "Blue N Boogie", "Anthropology", "Night In Tunisia", and "Groovin High". A pair of late 60s gems from Hammond organ giant Don Patterson! First up is Opus De Don – a real cooker from the great Hammond hero Don Patterson – a set that adds in the trumpet of Blue Mitchell and tenor of Junior Cook – in addition to Don's core trio of Pat Martino on guitar and Billy James on drums! The addition of horns takes the material places that Don's earlier albums didn't go – and the record's got some nice long groovers like "Opus De Don" and "Sir John" – all very nice! Next is Oh Happy Day – with a great group that features trumpeter Virgil Jones, plus a twin tenor lineup on most tracks that includes George Coleman and Houston Person. The album includes one very long, very nice groover called "Hip Trip" – and it also features a cover of Edwin Hawkins "Oh Happy Day", turned into a surprisingly nice solo vehicle, plus "Perdido", "Good Time Theme", and "Blue N Boogie". Blue Mitchell also plays trumpet up front, bringing a nice tonal brightness to the album – and titles include a great version of Vick's "Our Miss Brooks", plus "Steppin Out", "Vicksville", and "Trimmed In Blue". The style is loose and open – and tracks are long, with tight solos, especially from Patton and Green, always a winning combination – really stepping out here with an early raw fury! One of our favorite albums of all time – and a record that just gets better and better the more we listen to it – and we've listened to it for years! Johnny "Hammond" Smith began his career as a simple soul jazz organist – but by the time of this album, he'd teamed up with the mighty Larry Mizell, the genius arranger/producer who'd breathed new life into the careers of Donald Byrd and Bobbi Humphrey. Mizell works with Hammond in the same way he does with other jazz artists – by taking a groove that works best with their solo style, and slowly layering other instrumentation and effects on top of it, so that when the solo kicks in, it's supported on waves and waves of funky sounds and soulful grooves. Mizell and his brother Fonce both play keyboards on the record, and the rest of the group includes monster fusion players like Harvey Mason, Roger Glenn, Hadley Caliman, and Jerry Peters. The real treat is Johnny, though – as his solos are heavenly, the best of his 70s work, stripped mean and lean, laid in at just the right points. Includes the breakbeat classic "Shifting Gears", the house classic "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", and funky numbers "Fantasy" and "Tell Me What To Do". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent Kudu work from one of the greatest organists of the 70s – a player who really stretched out and opened up his groove during the decade! Johnny Hammond was also known as Johnny Hammond Smith back in the 60s – but by the time of his legendary run at Kudu/CTI, he'd hit a much different groove – working with tight soulful arrangements that really set him loose to run away on the keyboards – and hitting a lean, mean sound that was light years from his playing of the decade before. Arrangements here are by Bob James – with a super-dope style that's wonderful – kind of at the start of the mode that Hammond would hit with Larry Mizell – but also more of the harder, straight forward soul jazz of his Prestige years. Riverside/Milestone, 1962/1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sublime Hammond from Johnny Smith – a pair of early albums for Riverside, back to back on a single CD! Black Coffee is one of Johnny Hammond's first albums – and a cooking little live set that really has the organist working with some early raw power! The group's a trio, but they seem to burn differently than some of the other organ combos of the time – maybe with that fluid sensibility that Johnny brought to his keys, and which would later open up in even more famous ways. The core group features Eddie McFadden on guitar and Leo Stevens on drums – but they're joined by Seldon Powell on tenor for more than half the album, who really opens things up with his tremendous playing – and shows at an early state that Johnny Hammond always knows the right way to use a horn player. Titles include "Monterey Theme", "Far Away Places", "I Remember Clifford", "He's A Real Gone Guy", and "Rufus Toofus". Mr Wonderful is a record that definitely lives up to its title – reminding us not only that Johnny Hammond Smith is one hell of an organist, but also a great leader with a really unique feel for a groove! The set's noteworthy not just for Johnny's own work on Hammond, but also for the presence of a young Houston Person – blowing tenor here in a way that's breathtaking right from the start – a bold, soulful tone that's a perfect fit for the group – which also includes trumpet from Johnny Williams and guitar from Eddie McFadden. The set includes a lot of tasty originals by Johnny – like "Cyra", "Lambert's Lounge", "Departure", and "Opus 2" – and already shows the way that Hammond was complicating his groove from that of other players of the time! A wicked bit of jazz funk from reedman Benny Golson – very different than most of his work from other decades, which was always relatively straight – and a great reminder that Benny could be pretty darn versatile when he wanted to! The real strength of the set is the arrangements – a skill for penning larger charts that Golson really developed in the 60s (including some great work for Jack McDuff) – turned here towards some of the larger soul-influenced territory that others were exploring at the time – like Donald Byrd, Cannonball Adderley, or Johnny Hammond! Golson definitely gets in some solos, but works here more at the helm of a larger array of players with a wonderfully soulful vibe – one that's augmented at times with vocals from singers who include Maxine Waters, James Gadson, and Mortonette Jenkins! The mix of modes is very much in territory that Wayne Henderson was exploring with his At-Home Productions work – and titles include the dancefloor classic "I'm Always Dancin' to the Music", the funky version of "Blues March", and the sweet cover of "Don't Ask My Neighbors". Titles include "Heavy Soul", "A Good Un", "Tearin Out", "Wild Bill's Beat", "Sister Caroline", "Bottom Groove", "Bubbles", "My Little Girl", and "Down With It". CD

LRC/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A sweet 70s groover from the great Lonnie Smith – a soulful little session that has the keyboardist really stretching out in some great ways! At the time, Smith fares a lot better than some of his late 60s jazz organ contemporaries – as he's got a great lean style, perfect for the decade's increasing use of electric keyboards and larger backings! This set's a great example of that style – as Smith moves way from his 60s soul jazz roots, into the soaring blend of jazz, funk, and soul that you'd also hear on Johnny Hammond albums of the time – almost more soul than jazz, given the presence of vocals on some cuts – but still always with more than enough room for the leader to stretch out and solo. Backings are nice and tight – and handled by Brad Baker (of B Baker Chocolate Company fame) – and tracks include "Funk Reaction", "For The Love Of It", "It's Changed", and "When The Night Is Right".
