John AbercrombieArcade ... LP
ECM, 1978. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A record full of rich tones and cascadingly lyrical lines – and a set that features the wonderful pairing of John Abercrombie's guitar and the piano of Richie Beirach! Beirach seems to ground Abercrombie even more than usual – still letting John have those atmospheric qualities in his notes, but with a sense of flow and focus that we really appreciate – energy that might also come from the work of George Mraz on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. Tunes are simple and elegant, but say a hell of a lot with a little – and the album's maybe as perfect a summation of the ECM approach to guitar at its best as some of the early Pat Metheny albums. Titles include "Arcade", "Nightlake", "Neptune", "Alchemy", and "Paramour". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has ring and edge wear.)

✨✧ John Abercrombie/Marc Johnson/Peter ErskineJohn Abercrombie/Marc Johnson/Peter Erskine ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1989. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A nicely varied live set from this trio of key ECM players of the 80s – captured here with the same sense of sound as some of their studio recordings – which must have been something amazing to hear in person! Abercrombie's still very chromatic at this point in his career – playing fluid, colorful lines on guitar – but also using occasional guitar synthesizer passages too – more waves of sound than individual lines, which sounds especially nice next to more driving drums from Peter Erskine! Marc Johnson's ear for space is perfectly tuned for the proceedings – working at a level that's far beyond standard bassmanship – and titles include "Light Beam", "Drum Solo", "Four On One", "Samurai Hee Haw", "Furs On Ice", "Stella By Starlight", and "Innerplay". ✨✧ John AbercrombieNight ... LP
ECM, 1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The airy tones of guitarist John Abercrombie find a bit of a different setting here – a slight change from some of his earlier ECM albums, but still with a relatively open vibe overall! Jan Hammer's in the group on keyboards, but sounds thankfully very different than his Miami Vice fame – almost reminding us of his earliest jazz years in German, especially when he hits a nice groove – which is often echoed by strong tenor lines from Michael Brecker, whose voice might be the strongest in the set overall – although again, nicely different than his more famous material. Jack DeJohnette handles drums for the quartet – and titles include "Night", "3 East", "Look Around", "Four On One", and "Believe You Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John AbercrombieUp & Coming ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2017. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of chromes and tones from the legendary John Abercrombie – an album that's a beautiful summation of all the special style he's brought to his guitar work over the years! That subtle shading that John had back at the start is still very firmly in place, but he group's also almost got a Bill Evans sort of approach – a gentle attack and quick decay, always respecting the space between the notes – driven strongly by the wonderful piano efforts of Marc Copland, who seems to be the perfect balance for Abercrombie. In a way, the album really hearkens back to those key ECM albums of the 70s – those moments when something extremely special and new was taking place, and when things never got too abstract or ambient. The subtle rhythms help a lot – always-careful work on drums from Joey Barron, and well-placed bass from Drew Gress. Titles include "Joy", "Tears", "Sunday School", "Jumbles", and "Flipside". CD

✨✧ Lonnie Smith/John AbercrombieAfro Blue ... CD
Music Masters, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
That's Dr Lonnie Smith, to you – grooving greatly here on one of those sweet mid 90s sessions that really returned his organ talents to the jazz-buying public! The group on the date is co-led with guitarist John Abercrombie – a player whose work has graced soul jazz sets over the years, but who's also best known for the airier tones of his ECM recordings – tones that sometimes surface here, but which are then quickly turned into the more focused sounds needed to match Smith's clean lines on the Hammond! There's no bassist at all on the date – Lonnie handles most of that with the organ – drums are by Marvin Smitty Smith. Titles include "Impressions", "Greensleeves", "Afro Blue", and "Bessie's Blues" – all tributes to Coltrane, natch! CD

Jack DeJohnette's DirectionsUntitled ... LP
ECM, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99
One of the excellent DeJohnette albums cut for ECM in the mid 70s. He's playing here with John Abercrombie, Alex Foster, Mike Richmond and Warren Bernhardt in an electric setting, and the vibe has the sort of wide open feel that a lot of progressive players were exploring at the time: a sort of post-modal, post-free approach that relied heavily on intuitive improvisation and expansive lines that never get too strident. 7 numbers mostly written by DeJohnette, some in collaboration with the group memebers, including "Flying Spirits", "Pansori Visions", "Fantastic", "The Vikings Are Coming", "Struttin", "Morning Star" and "Malibu Reggae". ✨✧ Charles LloydVoice In The Night ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1999. Used ... $8.99
A key album from the later Charles Lloyd years on ECM – from a moment when the saxophonist seemed to be completely reinvigorated, and exploring very different territories than his music of the 60s! Part of the sound has Lloyd hitting a few ECM vibes – hard not to do with a group that features John Abercrombie on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but there's also moments that are looser and freer, too – really showing the individuality that's always been such a hallmark of Charles' recordings, and which here is hardly going to cowtow to any sort of stricter style for the label. The tenor work is superb – very sinuous and constantly exploring, but never overindulgent – and titles include "Voice In The Night", "Dorotea's Studio", "Homage", "Pocket Full Of Blues", "Forest Flower Sunrise/Sunset", and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing". Bob MintzerHymn ... CD
Owl, 1990. Used ... $2.99
Bold work from tenorist Bob Mintzer – recorded in the mix of acoustic and electric styles that resonated best on Owl Records sessions like this in the 80s – a sense of freedom and free space, but not one that's as prone to sliding off the groove as records on ECM. Mintzer's got a sound that's biting at times, but also a bit held back – a quality that almost echoes early Eric Dolphy, especially on the few numbers with bass clarinet – but which comes across quite differently alongside guitar from John Abercrombie. Remaining players include Marc Johnson on bass and Peter Erskine on drums – a well-matched quartet that really make the best of each others company here! Titles include "Duo", "Hymn", "Modern Day Tuba", "Children's Song", "Little Motif", and "Weird Blues". CD

Stark RealityActing Thinking Feeling – The Complete Works 1968 to 1978 (3CD set) ... CD
Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $13.99 29.98
Amazing sounds from The Stark Reality – an obscure group from the early 70s, but one who've really risen to fame over the years – thanks to their groundbreaking ear for new music, and their freewheeling way with a funky groove! This package brings together all the incredible work recorded by the group in the late 60s and early 70s – a mindblowing assortment of funky and fuzzy jazz tracks – almost all of which are graced by the offbeat vibes work of Monty Stark! Stark often adds a bit of distortion into his instrument, which makes for a very tripped-out approach to vibes – one that blends perfectly with the heavy funk of some of the rhythms, and the freaky guitar lines added to most tracks by a young John Abercrombie. Yet at other times, things are very laidback and chilled-out – balanced beautifully from track to track, in a way that illustrates the larger picture the group were always going for in their music. This massive package brings together everything Stark Reality ever recorded – their famous Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop album, the Acting Thinking Feeling live performance, the Roller Coaster Ride/1969 album, and lots of rare singles too – more than enough music to please any fan of the group, and blow the minds of anyone who's just getting a first taste. Titles include "Roller Coaster Ride", "On Being Black", "New World Generation", "Theme To Say Brother", "Dreams", "Clouds", "All You Need To Make Music", "Rocket Ship", "Cooking", "The Old Prospector", and "Junkman's Song". Great package too – with two LP-styled CD sleeves inside a larger case, plus a big booklet of notes and photos! CD

✨✧ Horacee ArnoldTales Of the Exonerated Flea ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost fusion classic from the early 70s – one of the only records cut under the leadership of drummer Horacee Arnold, but a heck of a great little set with a soaringly righteous sound! The style here is plenty full-on, but a bit less rock-leaning than some of the other Columbia fusion of the period – thanks to a spacious vision on Arnold's part, and the inclusion of a fair bit of sounds from world music. Players on the set include Art Webb on flute, Sonny Fortune on soprano sax, John Abercrombie on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and marimba, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Jan Hammer on moog and electric piano – and although there's a fair bit of guitar in the mix, the other acoustic elements are kept nice and high too – for a blend that's almost like some of the best Brazilian fusion from later years, touched by a slightly funkier sound! Tracks really stretch out nicely, allowing for plenty of solo space as they roll on, in a way that's almost a cross between Strata East and some of the more familiar mainstream fusion modes of the time. Very hip stuff, with titles that include "Benzele Windows", "Tales Of The Exonerated Flea", "Euroaquilo Silence", "Puppet Of The Seasons", "Sing Night Jar", and "Delicate Evasions". CD

✨✧ McCoy Tyner4 X 4 – McCoy Tyner Quartets ... LP
Milestone, 1980. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
McCoy Tyner's a hell of a piano player on his own, but in the post-Coltrane years he also developed an amazing talent for picking sidemen too – as you'll hear in this very unique set! The record features four different quartets – hence the title – each of which features a core trio of Tyner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Al Foster on drums – with the inclusion of Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Arthur Blythe on alto, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and John Abercrombie on electric mandolin! Each of the four groups is featured on a different side of the 2LP set – which allows things to get broken up nice and easily – almost like getting four great Tyner albums in one, each with a different style. Most tunes have that soaring, righteous quality that McCoy did so well during his 70s years – usually with larger groups – and titles include "Blues In The Minor", "The Seeker", "Forbidden Land", "Backward Glance", "Paradox", "Inner Glimpse", and "I Wanna Stand Over There". ✨✧ AtmospheresAtmospheres Featuring Clive Stevens & Friends ... CD
Capitol/ESC (Germany), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A jazz fusion classic from Atmospheres – a hip group led by reedman Clive Stevens, and which also features some usually-mellower players really taking off together! Stevens blows a great range of horns – electric and acoustic tenor, sopranos sax, and often a wah-wah pedal to inflect the notes coming out of his electric horn – a bit like John Klemmer in some of his early electric moments! This quality is emphasized nicely by the guitars of Steve Khan and John Abercrombie, and the electric piano and ring modulator of Ralph Towner – players who really know how to keep the right sort of space between the notes, which makes for a few funky moments – especially with core rhythms from Rick Laird on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Harry Wilkinson on percussion. Titles include "Nova 72", "Earth Spirit", "Astral Dreams", and "The Parameters Of Saturn". CD

✨✧ George OtsukaMaracaibo Cornpone ... CD
Trio/Solid (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A cool 70s set from Japanese drummer George Otsuka – much more fusion-based than his work of the 60s, with some great help from an assortment of American and Japanese players! Many tunes have an angular, searching sort of feel – but there's also a nice dose of funk too, choppier rhythms that make the album a lot more sharp-edged than other Japanese fusion of the time. Steve Grossman's in the group on soprano sax, and you can definitely hear his influence – as there's almost a PM Records vibe to the set at times. Other players include John Abercrombie on guitar, Miroslav Vitous on bass, Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, and both Richie Beirach and Masabumi Kikuchi on keyboards, including a fair bit of Fender Rhodes. Titles include the funky "Who Got", plus "Believer", "Ginger", "Maracaibo Cornpone", and "Telegram". CD

✨✧ Barre PhillipsMountainscapes ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very different setting than some of the more spacious Barre Phillips albums of the 70s – as this set has him working in a mixed electric/acoustic mode – with a core quartet that features John Surman on baritone, soprano, and bass clarinet – plus Stu Martin on drums and Dieter Feichtner on electronics – a trio that really gets going when Martin and Surman also play some electronics as well! The mode is maybe more like some of Surman's albums that mix reed lines with electronics – although the presence of Phillips is still often felt in the deeper, darker corners of the record and the album features a long suite of "Mountainscapes", with an appearance from guitarist John Abercrombie on the final passage.
