✨✧ Joel RossKing Maker ... CD
Blue Note, 2019. Used ... $9.99
An incredible debut from vibist Joel Ross – an artist who's already given us great moments on records with Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill, and others – but who's completely his own man here right from the start! Ross instantly emerges as a major creative force – leading the combo, composing the music, and co-producing the set – with a rich vision for the future of vibes in jazz, but one that also carries the depths of previous generations – especially in the way that Joel approaches a tune, with a subtle sense of gravity that makes each new selection a very powerful statement. The group features Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Jeremy Corren on piano, Benjamin Tiberio on bass, and Jeremy Dutton on drums – a tight quintet who work with a great sense of sympathy – and singer Gretchen Parlato also joins the group at one point. Titles include "Prince Lynn's Twin", "The Grand Struggle Against Fear", "Freda's Disposition", "Yana", "With Who Do You Learn Trust", and "Ill Relations". CD

Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings ... CD
International Anthem, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99 13.99
Maybe the crowning achievement of drummer Makaya McCraven so far – a double-length set that stands as a huge testimony to all the many waves he's been making in jazz for the past few years! The album features four slices of live performance – recorded in New York, Chicago, LA, and London – and as with every one of his different projects, Makaya seems to bring a different voice to each live track here – recording with Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes in New York, Shabaka Hutchings on tenor in Chicago; Nubya Garcia on tenor and Ashley Henry on Rhodes in London; and Josh Johnson on alto, Jeff Parker on guitar, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin in LA! The rhythms are as amazing as the contributions from the different soloists – and the sound of the record is maybe something we'd call post-spiritual – moving past that Coltrane-inspired mode that's been revived so well in the 21st Century, while still holding onto its best sense of energy. The whole thing is fantastic – and titles include "The Count Off", "Brighter Days Beginning", "Universal Beings", "Mantra", "Young Genius", "Holy Lands", "Wise Man Wiser Woman", "Prosperity's Fear", "Atlantic Black", "Flipped Out", "Voila", and "Suite Hans". ✨✧ James FranciesFlight ... CD
Blue Note, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Damn great work from pianist James Francies – a musician who's definitely in the best side of the new Blue Note generation – and who we hope has a legacy with the label to match Robert Glasper! Francies has this way of just grabbing notes out of the air – sometimes cascading lines of chords, sometimes more carefully stacked passages – alongside bass from Burniss Travis, and drums from Jeremy Dutton – which are then balanced with shifting appearances from Mike Moreno on guitar, Chris Potter on saxes, and Joel Ross on vibes! Most tunes are originals by James, and already show a fresh new ear – one that's full of soul, but sharply modern too – on tunes that include "Leaps", "Reciprocal", "Sway", "My Day Will Come", "Crib", "Dark Purple", and "Dreaming". ✨✧ Charles Owens QuartetLive At Smalls ... CD
Smalls Live, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully collaborative session from saxophonist Charles Owens – who leaves equal space here in the spotlight for tenorist Joel Frahm – as both of them work together with just piano and bass, on these long tracks that really has us opening up to their talents even more than before! The quartet features Alex Claffy on bass and Arie Hoenig on drums – both of whom are great, but still maybe pale in comparison to the amazing interplay between the two tenorists – criss-crossing majestically as they flow into each track, then soaring out boldly on these amazing solos on their own. We've always said that the Live At Smalls series seems to bring out the best in its musicians – and that's definitely the case here, maybe even more so than usual – on titles that include "15 Step", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Cheryl", "Interlude 1", "Round Midnight", and "You & The Night & The Music".
