✨✧ Barry De Vorzon/Mandrill/Joe WalshWarriors – Original Soundtrack (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Spectrum/La La Land, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible version of The Warriors soundtrack – one that not only features the full original album material, but which also contains – for the first time ever – all of Barry De Vorzon's wonderful instrumental work! These cuts comprise over an extra 30 minutes not on CD before – and are really wonderful stuff, with loads of cool funky electric bits that easily rival the best horror soundtrack funk of the early 80s – with similar use of Goblin-like keyboards and wicked guitar riffs! De Vorzon instrumental cuts include "Baseball Furies Chase/The Fight", "Wonder Wheel", "Graveyard", "Night Run", "March To Station", and "Skater/Mens Room/The Fight" – and other titles include "Echoes In My Mind" by Mandrill, "In Havana" by Kenny Vance & Ismael Miranda, "Nowhere To Run" by Arnol McCuller, and of course the classic "In The City" by Joe Walsh. Lots of great notes – and over 70 minutes of music! CD
(2013 pressing.)

Ray ManzarekWhole Thing Started With Rock & Roll Now It's Out Of Control ... LP
Mercury, 1974. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Given where Ray Manzarek's career was going in the years after the breakup of The Doors, it's hard to say the whole thing's "out of control" – but we will admit that the album's a really compelling one, with some great moments that make us tip our hat to Mr M! There's a really varied feel to the set here – but the best moments have Manzarek bringing in a strong bit of jazz – showing off the keyboard talents first honed on 60s hits, but stretching out with some hipper grooves. Guests include John Klemmer, who plays a great solo on one track, plus Joe Walsh, Flo & Eddie, and even a young Patti Smith – featured as "poetess" in the credits! Titles include the funky "Begin The World Again", the searching jazzy number "Whirling Dervish", and the tunes "I Wake Up Screaming", "Art Deco Fandango", and "Bicentennial Blues". And honestly, there's kind of an artsy playfulness here that's years beyond The Doors, and which almost prefaces some of the more experimental New York work in later years. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has ringwear, edge wear, and is bent a bit at the corners.)

✨✧ BB KingIndianola Mississippi Seeds ... LP
ABC, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
BB King hips up his groove a bit here – picking up some of the crossover soul and rock touches used by contemporaries over at Chess/Cadet, and expanding his sound with a range of guests that include Leon Russell, Joe Walsh, and Carole King! Despite the presence of these bigger names, the set's very much in BB's own spirit – mostly focused on his vocals and guitar work, and still mostly including original compositions. A few tunes get nice and funky on the rhythms, although still very much in a blues-based way – and Jimmie Haskell contributes a few larger arrangements from time to time. Titles include "King's Special", "Until I'm Dead & Cold", "You're Still My Woman", "Hummingbird", "Go Underground", and "Chains & Things". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has some ring wear, small top seam split.)

✨✧ Jimmy WitherspoonHandbags & Gladrags ... LP
ABC, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An interesting 70s session from Jimmy – rougher and rootsier than most of his jazz-inflected 60s recordings, in a style that was clearly trying to cross him over to the college kids who were buying so much blues at the time! The set's still got a lot of jazz players on it – including Stu Gardner, Gildo Mahones, Ray Brown, and Larry Bunker – but the overall style is more in a tripped-out, laidback mode that has plenty of righteous touches, including some female backing singers (Merry Clayton and Clydie King) on a few tracks. Joe Walsh plays a bit of guitar on the set, and the album's got a great version of "Handbags & Gladrags", plus the cuts "It's Time To Live", "Redneck", "Testifying", "Stay With Me Baby", and "Evil Man Blues".
