✨✧ Joe Lovano & Dave Douglas SoundprintsOther Worlds ... CD
Greenleaf, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
There's a wonderful combination of horns going on here – the trumpet of Dave Douglas and tenor of Joe Lovano – sounding maybe even better on this album than on their previous efforts together! Both artists have this really cascading sense of sound in this setting – notes that seem to spill out effortlessly from their horns together, finding all the right spaces and spots next to each other – and shaded in with work from Lawrence Fields on piano, Linda May Han Oh on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – a group of equally free-thinking players who match and expand the unusual changes going on in the music. All titles are original – and tracks include "Life On Earth", "Space Exploration", "Shooting Stars", "Midnight March", "Pythagoras", "Sky Miles", "The Flight", and "Antiquity To Outer Space". CD

Joe Lovano/Marilyn Crispell/Carmen CastaldiGarden Of Expression ... LP
ECM (Germany), 2021. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
Joe Lovano is one of those players who only seems to go deeper at a time when he could be taking it easy – really pushing his talents to new territory, and finding ways to evolve the way that he expresses himself! That's definitely the case here, in his second album with the trio of Marilyn Crispell on piano and Carmen Castaldi on drums – a set that's maybe even more open, and more personal than before – with Joe blowing tenor, soprano, and a bit of tarogato – all in an echoey space that seems to amplify every moment and new idea. Crispell is nicely restrained, but manages to do a lot with a little – sometimes in ways that are more gentle than usual – and titles include "Night Creatures", "Dream On That", "Sacred Chant", "Zen Like", "Garden Of Expression", and "Chapel Song". Scolohofo (John Scofield)Oh! ... CD
Blue Note, 2003. Used ... $5.99
An all-star group – featuring John SCOfield, Joe LOvano, Dave HOlland, and Al FOster, hence the unusual name of the ensemble – all grooving in an angular mode that recalls the current Blue Note sound at its freshest. Lovano's edgey tenor and soprano work really make the session hold together nicely, as he's got a tone here that almost reminds us of George Braith back in the days when he was recording for Blue Note himself – especially on some of his organ-based sessions. Scofield's guitar is in that cleaner, leaner sound he's using these days – which is a good match for Foster's spare work on rhythm. Titles include "Oh", "Right About Now", "Brandyn", "Faces", "Oh I See", "In Your Arms", and "Shorter Form". CD

Lonnie SmithAfro-desia ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 7, 2021
Excellent work by Lonnie Smith – a free-flowing album of long jazzy grooves that's kind of an extension of his Blue Note albums, touches with more of the electricity of his 70s playing! There's some killer rhythms on the album – courtesy of drummers Jamey Hudad and Ben Riley, and electric bassists Ron Carter and Ralphe Armstrong – and Lonnie's on organ grooving alongside a young Joe Lovano, who plays some killer tenor and soprano sax. Includes the 15 minute jammer "Spirits Free", plus "Afrodesia", "Favors", "Straight To The Point", and "The Awakening". CD
This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, July 7.

✨✧ Lonnie SmithAfrodesia ... CD
LRC, Mid 70s. Used ... $8.99
A tasty CD that brings together some cuts from Lonnie's legendary Afro-desia album for Groove Merchant from 1975, plus other tracks from later Groove Merchant sessions. The Afro-desia material is great – with Lonnie playing in a very stretched out, Larry Young-ish kind of way, and a young Joe Lovano laying down some sweet hard tenor solos. The other material features players like George Benson, Ben Riley, and Bob Cranshaw – and although the sound's a bit smoother, the groove's still pretty nice. Titles include "Apex", "Flavors", "Afrodesia", "All In My Mind", and "When Night Is Right". 7 cuts in all! CD

✨✧ Lonnie SmithWhen The Night Is Right ... LP
Chiaroscuro, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great later work from Lonnie Smith – a set that's quite different than his initial Hammond material for Blue Note – but equally excellent in its own sort of way! The album has Lonnie playing both Fender Rhodes and organ – the former with this sweet, tight groove that's mighty nice – a bit like when Johnny Hammond or Jack McDuff touched the instrument on their own albums from the 70s – with all the chunky, funky qualities learned from their solos on the Hammond. Production is by Sonny Lester, and the groups here are relatively big, which gives a bit of a blacksploitation funk to the record – but part of the record also has a leaner group with Joe Lovano on tenor, blowing some beautifully extended solos – as well as George Benson on guitar. Titles include a great ten minute take on "Impressions" – plus "Apex", "Lean Meat", "When The Night Is Right", and "It's Changed". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive 2009 – 6th Annual Concert Tour – The Works Of McCoy Tyner Plus New Compositions ... CD
SF Jazz, 2009. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The SF Jazz collective is a septet here, not the usual octet formation – and they play with a really strong all-star lineup that maybe makes for some darker corners than usual! The group lead off with the compositions of McCoy Tyner, often given very fresh arrangements, and mix in a range of their own originals too – handled by a lineup that includes Dave Douglas on trumpet, Joe Lovano on tenor, Renee Rosnes on piano, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Matt Penman on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. You can definitely hear the influence of Douglas and Lovano on the sound, especially at this point in their careers – and titles include "Aisha", "Fly With The Wind", "Three Flowers", "Sycamore", "Yes We Can/Victory Dance", "Migrations", "Consensus", and "Four By Five".
