Jocelyn BrownOne From The Heart (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1987. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.98
A classic groover from Jocelyn Brown – presented here in a 2CD set that's overflowing with remixes! One From The Heart was a big mainstream moment for Jocelyn Brown – the crowning realization of all the great work she'd done in the club underground in the early part of the 80s – presented here with a slightly more crossover vibe, but a sound that's still pretty darn great in the end, thanks to Brown's tremendous vocals. Jocelyn's really keeping an older style of female soul alive here – amidst some beats and more programmed rhythms – belting things out with the pipes that first rose her to fame in the disco years, pretty proud and unabashed here. Rhythms are better than usual for a major label record like this – thanks to help from Hubert Eaves and Jellybean – and titles include "Love's Gonna Get You", "Ego Maniac", "True Love", "Caught In The Act", "I Cry Real Tears", and "Living Without Your Love". Bonus CD features 10 more remixes – of "Ego Maniac", "Caught In The Act", and "Love's Gonna Get You". CD

IncognitoBees & Things & Flowers (UK pressing) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2006. Used ... $2.99
Another amazing set from Bluey and Incognito – one of the few groups who seem to get better and better as the years go by! The title of this album is a line from Roy Ayers' classic "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – and the group begin the record with an excellent cover version of that tune – really setting the scene for the warmly jazzy grooves to come! Somehow, the sound here seems more "instant classic" than ever before – perfectly recorded, deeply soulful, and filled with just the right balance of 70s styles and contemporary touches to keep things fresh throughout. Vocalists include Jocelyn Brown, Carleen Anderson, and Maysa Leak – and Bluey makes no attempt to hide his love of older music – covering tracks from both the pop and soul side of the spectrum, including "That's The Way Of The World", "Summer In The City", "Tin Man", and "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – as well as "Always There", which is remade here in a new Incognito version, as is "Still A Friend Of Mine". Other tracks include "Everyday", "Raise", "Crave", and "Deep Waters". CD

A really righteous classic from Inner Life – soaring to the rafters with great lead vocals from Jocelyn Brown! The tune's got a funky guitar riffing undercurrent that works well with the smooth Salsoul production – just the right blend of funk and disco to make it never grow old! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Jessica Lauren FourJessica Lauren Four ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2012. Used ... $8.99
A wonderful full album from keyboardist Jessica Lauren – a London talent we've loved for years, and have watched mature deeply over the past few decades! Jessica's keyboards have graced a number of key recordings from the past 20 years or so on the British scene – but she's issued woefully few albums under her own name, which makes this jazzy session an even greater treat! Jessica plays acoustic piano and organ on the record – the latter of which still brings in some of the more electric modes we know from her roots – while the piano tones ring out with a beautifully earthy feel – alongside bass, drums, and a heck of a lot of percussion – more than enough to bring in plenty of Latin and other global elements to the music! Most tunes are instrumentals, but the set does feature guest vocals from Jocelyn Brown on the tracks "Happiness Train" and "I Believe". Instrumental cuts include "The Name Of Fela Will Always Stand For Freedom", "White Mountain", "Vaya Con Dios", "Dogtown", "Gangaman", and "Mel Benson". CD

Jimmy PonderAll Things Beautiful ... CD
LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
Sweet soulful lines from guitarist Jimmy Ponder – working here in a warm set of bigger backings that almost give the record the same feel as classic late 60s outings from Wes Montgomery, or some of the CTI work by George Benson! Backings are put together by Brad Baker – in that same great mix of jazz and soul he used with his B Baker Chocolate Company material – and although there's a bit of chorus vocals on the album (sung by a group that includes Gwen Guthrie and Jocelyn Brown), the main focus is on the soulful, chromatic lines of Ponder's guitar – which have a poise and focus here that really tops some of his earlier work. The groove is pretty super-dope throughout – that great late Groove Merchant approach to funky jazz – and titles include "Love Me Right", "Chasing That Face", "A Trip To The Stars", "A Clue", and "Turn". CD
(Part of the Groove Merchant Mo' Groovy Collection!)

Knife Edge (Japan), 2006. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Sublime dancefloor work from Jazztronik – nicely back to basic grooves that are filled with a mix of soul, jazz, and Brazilian sounds! CD1 here features some of the best cuts we've heard from Jazztronik in awhile – a blend of vocal and instrumental numbers served up with help from Monday Michiru, Miss Venha, Cro Magnon, and Robert Gallagher – all done with that soaring, joyous approach that we've really come to love in the work of keyboardist/composer Ryo Nozaki! Titles include "Love Tribe (main mix)", "The King Of Dance", "Life Syncopation", "Festalica (clap ya hands)", "Tiger Eyes (English version)", and "Dust To Dust". CD 2 features a Jazztronica Annex – an addition to the well-crafted Jazztronica sets, and one that features Nozaki mixing together both his own work and titles by other artists – again with a soulfully flowing vibe!
