Jimmy RuffinRuff 'N Ready ... CD
SOUL/Reel Music, 1969. New Copy ... $7.99 15.99
A tremendous little album from Jimmy Ruffin – as "ruff" as the title implies, with a much deeper groove than you might find from other Motown releases at the time! The style here is really wonderful – rich, heartfelt vocals from Jimmy that easily match the best of the Detroit underground of the time – a style that's a bit like Darrell Banks or JJ Barnes, with echoes of the southern sound of the 60s – but produced to perfection with all the best that Motown could muster! Jimmy gets lots of heavy help from Norman Whitfield – who produced about half the tracks on the set, and gives Ruffin a sound that's somewhere between his righteous soul with the Temptations, and the best Motown grooves of his earlier work for the label. Other production is by Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier, William Weatherspoon & James Dean, and Richard Morris – all of whom follow Whitfield's lead nicely – and although the album's got few runaway hits, it's a rock-solid effort throughout – just the kind of album that makes us love the Motown full-length scene even more than the label's singles! Titles include "Lonely Lonely Man Am I", "It's Wonderful (To Be Loved By You)", "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me", "Everybody Needs Love", "Sad & Lonesome Feeling", "Love Gives Love Takes Away", and "Farewell Is A Lonely Sound". Great reissue package too – with excellent sound, very detailed notes, and some great vintage images! CD

Jimmy Ruffin was one of Motown's best voices of the 60s – and this set brings together 18 of his classic cuts, a handful of which were cut in duets with his brother David. The original vinyl on these tracks is always pretty tough to find, and the set's got many of Jimmy's bigger cuts from the time. Titles include "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", "Your Love Was Worth Waiting For", "I Want Her Love", "Baby, I've Got It", "How Can I Say I'm Sorry", "Since I've Lost You", "Stand By Me", "Turn Back The Hands Of Time", "Living In A World I Created For Myself", and "I'll Say Forever My Love". ✨✧ Jimmy RuffinJimmy Ruffin Sings Top Ten ... CD
SOUL/Motown, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great full length album from Motown's mighty Jimmy Ruffin – and a set with a lot deeper soul sound than you'd guess from the "top ten" in the title! The music's not commercial, but some of the sharpest Motown soul of the time – the kind of work that made the young Jimmy as important a solo male act to Motown as Marvin Gaye – thanks to a wonderfully crackling, raspy style of singing that makes any tune really stand out strongly. Some of the numbers here are originals associated with Ruffin, and others are 60s hits by others – but completely remade by Jimmy with his wonderful approach – and titles include the classic "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", plus "I've Passed This Way Before", "Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got", "World So Wide Nowhere To Hide", "Black Is Black", "Bless You", "How Can I Say I'm Sorry", and "As Long As There Is Love". Ruby TurnerLivin A Life Of Love – The Jive Anthology 1986 to 1991 ... CD
Jive/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used 2CD ... $16.99
Classic work from Ruby Turner – a UK soul singer, but one who was part of a new generation that hardly had to answer at all to her contemporaries on the other side of the Atlantic! The tracks here have a modern, midtempo groove that's right up there with the best US mainstream soul of the period – and Turner's voice, honed by years of work with others, really soars out right from the start – with a richness that really keeps these songs fresh, even past some of the production styles of the time! Ruby sings here as if she's working for Atlantic Records at the end of the 60s, and not Jive Records in the 80s – and she brings a proud, full sound to her vocals that holds up wonderfully over the years. The set's a really well-chosen batch of tracks – 32 numbers that show Turner at her best, including duets woth Jimmy Ruffin and Jonathan Butler – with titles that include "I'm Livin A Life Of Love", "Hurting Inside", "If You're Ready Come With Me", "I'm In Love", "I'd Rather Go Blind", "It's My Life (ext version)", "Step In My Shoes", "Still Waters Run Deep", "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", "Just My Imagination", "It's Gonna Be Alright", "Paradise (radio edit)", "Everytime I Breathe", "It's Gonna Be Alright (Brixton bass mix)", "It's You My Heart Beats For", "Merry Go Round", and "Provoking". Kent (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
The third volume in one of the greatest series on Kent – a selection of tunes from the early days of soul music, when R&B had peaked, gospel was lending a bit of influence, doo wop was turning into group harmony, and the term "soul music" was just a twinkle in the eyes of a few critics and punters! The vintage for most of these tunes is 1960 to 1964 – and Kent have done a great job of pulling together tunes with deep roots in the styles of the past, but which have one ear firmly turned towards the future of 60s and 70s soul. There's a total of 28 tracks in all – and titles include "She Put The Hurt On Me" by Prince La La, "Shorty's Got To Go" by The Impressions, "The Rains Came" by Big Sambo, "Talk To Me" by Sunny & The Sunliners, "Just For You (Stone Fox)" by Billy Watkins, "You Can't Run Away From me" by The Wanderers, "Play It Again" by Pat Lundy, "Help Me" by The Diplomats, "Have Love, Will Travel" by Richard Berry, "The Teacher" by The Falcons, "I Wanna Thank You" by The Enchanters, "People In Love" by The Taylor Brothers, "Don't Stop The Wedding" by Ann Cole, and "Don't Feel Sorry For Me" by Jimmy Ruffin. A fresh twist on a classic – as vintage Motown recordings are presented here with added orchestrations – all done at a level that lifts the soul singles up with even more majesty than before! Never-heard songs from the Motown empire of the 60s – all new discoveries from the label's mighty deep vaults – all of them totally great tracks that make for a superb new look at the Detroit powerhouse of soul! Many of these cuts are in a Northern Soul mode – the kind of upbeat groovers that made Motown a huge favorite on the British scene right from the start, and which make the UK Kent label a perfect spot to showcase work this great – with detailed notes on all the tracks, excellent sound quality, and an impeccable ear for choosing just the right sort of tracks to pop a groove like the bigger singles from the label.
