Jimi TenorDeep Sound Learning – 1993 to 2000 ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 1990s. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99
Early work from Jimi Tenor – the Finnish artist you might know for his work in the fields of jazz, soul, and funk in our current century – but who was a very different musician in the years before! Jimi still has a soulful vibe on these early tracks, but the music is much more electric, and focused on rhythms from house and club – kind of a reworking of a Detroit or Chicago mode, but with all these wonderful twists and turns along the way! Jimi once recorded for Warp Records, and you can definitely hear that in some of these tracks – while also noting some echoes of the jazz instrumentation to come. Titles include "Heinola", "Jameson", "Another Space Travel", "Baby It Hearts", "Salo", "Downtown", "Super Beat", "Travelers Cape", "O Sex", and "Plan 9". CD
Also available Deep Sound Learning – 1993 to 2000 ... LP 29.99

✨✧ Jimi Tenor & Kabu KabuMystery Of Aether ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We've always loved the music of Jimi Tenor – but recently, he seems to get better and better with each new record – hitting a spiritual, soulful depth we never would have expected years ago! This album's one of his best efforts ever – and feels more like some lost 70s Euro/African rarity – as you might expect from the compelling cover! All the jazz elements of previous Tenor projects are in place – but there's also more of a pan-global influence going on – especially in the complicated percussion that graces most tracks, and which provides a wonderful counterpart to instrumentation that includes tenor, flutes, and piano from Jimi – plus trumpet from Julla Eskola and Tero Lindberg, trombone from Jay Kortehisto and Heikki Tuhkanen, and guitar from Kalle Kalima. Tracks are long, and have a feel that's somewhere between Strata East and Parisian Afro jazz experiments of the 70s – and titles include "Universal Love", "Afroeuropean", "Eternal Mystery", "Africa Kingdom", "Dance Of The Planets", "Curtain Of Steel", and "Starstuff". ✨✧ Gil EvansGil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix ... LP
RCA, 1974. Near Mint- ... $23.99
Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". LP, Vinyl record album
(Nice Japanese pressing, with obi – RCA 6254.)

Jimi HendrixRoots Of Hendrix (aka Two Great Experiences Together) ... LP
Phoenix, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Well, we should hate this one as another "cash in on the late Hendrix" kind of album – but it's a pretty nice bunch of funk tracks with (supposedly) Jimi's guitar chopping away in heavy hard lines, and Lonnie Youngblood blowing away on hard heavy tenor. A number of tracks have vocals – we're not sure who by, although the record wants you to think that it's Hendrix. Good funky soul cuts include "Wipe The Sweat" – in three parts – and "All I Want". Other tracks include "Psycho", "Under The Table", and "Two In One Goes". Wild production values, too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Trip pressing. Cover has a small cutout hole, light ringwear, and a small sticker in back.)

Ernie Hawks & The Soul InvestigatorsScorpio Man (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timmion (Finland), 2018. New Copy ... $24.99
Ernie Hawks looks right out of the 70s on the cover – with his long hair, fringe jacket, and fiercely-held flute – which he mixes here with some great grooves from the Soul Investigators, in a vibe that's maybe even better than classic! The album's all instrumental, and has this fantastic sound that's way different than the usual contemporary funk set – nicely trippy at times, with echo and other effects applied to the instrumentation – and a strong ear for the overall sound, not just the power of each member of the group! Hawks is often out front, soloing with a funky flute sound – but he also handles vibes, pianoman, and trombone – in a very cool lineup that also has Martti Vesala on wah-wah trumpet, and Jimi Tenor on saxophone. All tunes are original, and they're really fantastic – each the kind that if you found on a rare soundtrack or lost jazz album, you'd be willing to pay plenty to own. Titles include "Still Trippin", "Bag Full Of Miracles", "Cold Turkey Time", "Scorpio Walk", "Windy City Blues", "Journey To The Bottom", and "Street Of Tears". LP, Vinyl record album
