Jesse JamesBring My Baby Back/Thank You Darlin ... 7-inch
20th Century, Late 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
Sublime soul from one of the most under-recognized singers of all time! "Bring My Baby Back" is a different tune than the hit of the same name – sung by Jesse in a light, yet soulful vocal style that's really tremendous. "Thank You Darlin" is even greater – coming full on right away, with a proud-stepping little groove, and some incredible vocals that blow away even Garnett Mimms and Howard Tate! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Labels have some paint marker.)

Jesse JamesI Need You Baby/Home At Last ... 7-inch
Zea, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Nice single from Jesse that has him singing in two different soulful styles. We're partial to "I Need You Baby", which is a great harmony-style ballad, recorded with heavenly soul production that's just great. "Home At Last" is pretty good, too, but it's more of a bluesy number. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(White label promo. Label has a small sticker.)

Jesse James/Clarence AsheJesse James Meets Clarence Ashe ... CD
Sounds Of Soul, Late 60s. Used ... $3.99
A great collection that brings together rare work from two bluesy soul artists of the 60s! Jesse James is one of our favorite singers ever – an obscure San Francisco talent with a voice that's instantly captivating, as you'll hear on the set's selection of his early singles, plus tracks from his one rare album on 20th Century. Titles by Jesse include "Believe In Me Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring My Baby Back", "Are You Gonna Leave Me", "Home At Last", "I'll Never Find Another One", and "I Need You Baby". Clarence Ashe has a rougher sound – nice and heavy, in a hard southern mode – and he's represented here by 13 tracks that include "Troubles I've Had", "In The Middle Of The Night", "Back To Muscle Shoals", "You Jived Me Long Enough", "Only Time Will Tell", and "Don't Open The Door On Monday". CD
(Out of print. Note: CD appears to have been mastered from vinyl sources – and although printed professionally, it's a bit low-budget in terms of the packaging. CD may not play well on all players.)

Harry JamesHarry Not Jesse – Harry James Plays Neal Hefti ... LP
MGM/Metro, 1961. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Neal Hefti is one of those arrangers who can make anything sound great – and this rare session with Harry James is no exception! Hefti does a great job of updating Harry's older swing style – and the backings here have a solid 60s bounce that's a lot groovier than you ever might have expected from a James record a few decades back! There's a great sense of dynamism in the rhythms here – clearly the same groove that Hefti brought to Basie, but tilted slightly different here – with enough room for James to take the lead on his solos. Titles include "The Creeper", "Mister Johnson", "Tweet Tweet", "Koo Koo", "Rainbow Kiss", and "Hot Pink". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent work recorded in Paris – recordings that feature drummer Kenny Clarke on all of side one – with one group that includes Jesse Powell on tenor, Jimmy Heath on alto, and John Lewis on piano – and another that features Benny Bailey on trumpet and Cecil Payne on baritone! Shirley BasseyNever Never Never/Good Bad But Beautiful ... CD
United Artists/BGO (UK), 1973/1975. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Two early 70s albums from Shirley Bassey – back to back in a single set! Never Never Never is a warmly-crafted 70s album from the great Shirley Bassey – a set that continues that great move she was making at the end of the 60s – shaking off some of the bolder, brassier styles that famously got her going at the start, but which were maybe sounding a bit dated after the James Bond soundtracks got too much play! Instead, Bassey's opening up in a nicely mature mode – maybe making the same sort of shift between soul and adult modes that Johnny Mathis was hitting during the same period – and working with great UK maestros Johnny Harris and Arthur Greenslade, both able to balance strings and soul on titles that include "Never Never Never", "Make The World A Little Younger", "No Regrets", "Going Going Gone", "Somehow", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "The Old Fashioned Way", and "Someone Who Cares". On Good Bad But Beautiful, Shirley Bassey is at her mellow best – sounding very different than the brassy vocalist who first rose to international fame with "Goldfinger" – yet still able to work through all the rich aspects of her great vocal range! Arthur Greenslade handles the backings, and the style is mature, and updated in maybe the way that Frank Sinatra was hitting at the time – both in the choice of songs, and in the way that Greenslade sets Shirley up for the best reading of the lyric. Titles include "I'll Be Your Audience", "Emotion", "Good Bad But Beautiful", "Jesse", "Run On & On & On", "Feel Like Makin Love", and "I'll Be Your Audience". CD

Charles BradleyVictim Of Love (with bonus download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". Fantastic Johnny CBoogaloo Down Broadway ... LP
Phil-LA Of Soul, 1968. Very Good ... $24.99
A funky soul classic from the Fantastic Johnny C – a hard and heavy Philadelphia winner from the end of the 60s, and the kind of record that really gave Stax and Atlantic a run for their money! Johnny C's working here with some great hard soul production from Jesse James – grooving in a way that's heavy on the back beat – following in the style of similar late 60s work from Wilson Pickett and Dyke & The Blazers. Like Dyke, Johnny's album has a rolling groove that's a great precursor to funk in years to come – and like Wilson, Johnny's vocals are very on top of the mix – shoutin' and beltin' all the way through, in a really solid sock-soul groove! Titles include the hit "Boogaloo Down Broadway", plus "Cool Broadway, "Got What You Need", "Baby I Need You", "Shout Bamalama", and "The Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Vinyl has some marks that click a bit on"Shout Bamalama" and "Baby I Need You". Cover has light wear, some seam splitting, and DJ Copy stamp on back.)

Nimbus, 1978. New Copy ... $9.99
One of the most ambitious albums ever from pianist Horace Tapscott – a double-length set that has him working with a large lineup of underground musicians from the 70s Los Angeles scene – all united in spirit and power as the Pan-African Peoples Arkestra! Tapscott's piano directs the group strongly – as an extension of the vision that he brought to the late 60s Sonny's Dream album by Sonny Criss – but the music is freer, more spiritual, and often graced with bursts of ensemble energy, balanced by some really tremendous solos from other musicians too! The lineup includes some other key members of the Nimbus Records collective – including Jesse Sharps on saxes and flute, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, and Roberto Miranda on bass – and other players include James Andrews and Sabia Matteen on tenor, Archie Johnson and Lester Robertson on trombone, Billy Harris on soprano, Herbert Callies on alto clarinet, and Michael Session on alto. ✨✧ Sid HemphillDevil's Dream – Alan Lomax Recordings ... LP
Mississippi, 1942. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from the delta – but way different than the usual blues you might expect! Sid Hemphill is a really unique talent – a multi-instrumentalist who made most of the records heard on this set – and a strong proponent of the earlier Mississippi use of panpipes! The local variant heard here is referred to as "quills" – and often mixed with a rocking fiddle accompaniment in the background – moving up and down with kind of a devilish quality that really sets an edge underneath the rough-edged vocals, too! Also, the vintage recording feel also gives the music a very offbeat feel – and from the notes inside the package, it sounds like Alan Lomax really worked hard to track down these sounds of Sid's. Titles include "The Devil's Dream", "Leather Britches", "Sidewalks Of New York", "Rye Straw", "Boll Weevil", "Jesse James", and "Come On Boys Let's Go To The Ball". LP, Vinyl record album
