Fantastic Johnny CBoogaloo Down Broadway ... CD
Phil-LA Of Soul/Jamie, 1968. Used ... $6.99
A funky soul classic from the Fantastic Johnny C – a hard and heavy Philadelphia winner from the end of the 60s, and the kind of record that really gave Stax and Atlantic a run for their money! Johnny C's working here with some great hard soul production from Jesse James – grooving in a way that's heavy on the back beat – following in the style of similar late 60s work from Wilson Pickett and Dyke & The Blazers. Like Dyke, Johnny's album has a rolling groove that's a great precursor to funk in years to come – and like Wilson, Johnny's vocals are very on top of the mix – shoutin' and beltin' all the way through, in a really solid sock-soul groove! Titles include the hit "Boogaloo Down Broadway", plus "Cool Broadway, "Got What You Need", "Baby I Need You", "Shout Bamalama", and "The Bounce". CD also features the bonus tracks "Hitch It To The Horse" and "Look What Love Can Make You Do". CD

Patrick Henry & The Liberation BandLoving U – The Best Of Patrick Henry & The Liberation Band ... CD
Mardi Gras/P-Vine (Japan), Mid 90s. New Copy ... $22.99
Mighty nice work from an overlooked soul group – a combo from the 90s who released a handful of records at the time, but who have a vibe that's much more like some of our favorite groups from the end of the 60s! There's a nicely bubbling vibe to some cuts – kind of the groove that you might hear from Archie Bell & The Drells, but a bit leaner and more laidback at times – and Patrick Henry has a style that crackles nicely around the edges on the groovers, maybe with some of the charms of a young Tyrone Davis or Jesse James – although with a deeper, more personal vibe on the mellow cuts – which balance with the upbeat tracks in a really great way – fleshing out the group's music to make the whole thing feel like some vintage lost gem from the southern scene. CD features 18 tracks in all, pulled from three rare albums by the group – titles that include "Loving U", "Good Loving", "LB Blues", "How Lucky Can I Get", "Come & Get It", "U Cheating", "I'm Leaving U", "Something About You", "Free Me", "The Train", and "I Could Make It Better". Horace Tapscott/Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraFlight 17 (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Nimbus/Outernational (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99
One of the most ambitious albums ever from pianist Horace Tapscott – a double-length set that has him working with a large lineup of underground musicians from the 70s Los Angeles scene – all united in spirit and power as the Pan-African Peoples Arkestra! Tapscott's piano directs the group strongly – as an extension of the vision that he brought to the late 60s Sonny's Dream album by Sonny Criss – but the music is freer, more spiritual, and often graced with bursts of ensemble energy, balanced by some really tremendous solos from other musicians too! The lineup includes some other key members of the Nimbus Records collective – including Jesse Sharps on saxes and flute, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, and Roberto Miranda on bass – and other players include James Andrews and Sabia Matteen on tenor, Archie Johnson and Lester Robertson on trombone, Billy Harris on soprano, Herbert Callies on alto clarinet, and Michael Session on alto. Titles include "Flight 17", "Breeze", "Horacio", "Clarice", and "Maui". This 2LP version features bonus material too – a great "Coltrane Medley", plus "Village Dance Revisited". ✨✧ John Lee HookerJohn Lee Hooker Alone – Vol 1 (with download) ... LP
Tomato/Fat Possum, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album that's easily one of John Lee Hooker's finest moments of the 70s – a set recorded live before a small audience at Hunter College in New York, but done with a feel that makes the whole thing even more timeless than most of Hooker's other albums of the decade! The mix has the vocals right up front – way more than even the guitar, at a level that really captures all the personal inflections and amazing tones in the lyrics – as well as John Lee's hip spoken intros as he works his way through the songs. Make no mistake, this isn't one of those hokey "college blues" albums that were coming out at the time – but instead a timeless portrait of one of the true originators, working here at his best. Titles on this first volume include "I Miss You So", "Jesse James", "Dark Room", "Boogie Chillum", "Boom Boom", and "One Scotch One Bourbon One Beer". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes bonus download.)

✨✧ Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraCall ... CD
Nimbus, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Large-group genius from the legendary Horace Tapscott – one of the few recordings of his groundbreaking Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra! The music here is totally righteous right from the start – even more searching and soaring than Tapscott's trio or solo work – thanks to help from some of the hippest, most spiritual players on the LA scene of the late 70s – a lineup you'll recognize from other Nimbus Records sessions, all working together beautifully to realize the unique vision of Horace! Tracks are long, and feature Tapscott on piano, Jesse Sharps on saxes, Adele Sebastian on flute and vocals, Herbert Callies on alto, James Andrews on tenor, Lester Robertson on trombone, Kafi Larry Roberts on soprano, and Linda Hill on additional piano – all working together perfectly as a unified ensemble. There's a strong Strata East vibe to the whole record – and titles include "The Call", "Nakatini Suite", "Quagmire Manor At Five AM", and "Peyote Song III". CD

✨✧ Dwight TribleMothership ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. From top to bottom, start to stop, the album's a treasure – with tracks that include "It's All About Love", "Thank You Master", "Song For My Mother", "Brother Where Are You", "Some Other Time", "These Things You Are To Me", "Desert Fairy Princess", and "Mothership". Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraAncestral Echoes – The Covina Sessions 1976 ... CD
Dark Tree (France), 1976. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A never-issued performance from Horace Tapscott and his Pan Afrika Peoples Arkestra – the large ensemble that provided a perfect platform for the bigger ideas he was bringing into his music in the 70s! A record like this marks Tapscott as every bit the spiritual visionary as Charles Tolliver or Sun Ra at the time – as Horace is recording in California with a series of long, extended compositions – showcased beautifully by a lineup that includes Jessee Sharps on soprano sax, Adele Sebastian on flute, Gary Bias and Michael Session on alto, Linda Hill on piano, and both James Andrews and Charles Chandler on tenor saxes – many of them names you'll know from their own great recordings on the Nimbus label a few years later. Kamau Daaood provides a bit of spoken word on the set – and titles include "Ancestral Echoes", "Sketches Of Drunken Mary", "Eteral Egypt Suite", and "Jo Annette". CD
