JazztronikHorizon ... CD
Tokuma (Japan), 2003. Used ... $14.99
Do these guys ever get tired of making great records? We think not – and this sweet little 8 track set is more than proof of that fact! The album's a slice of Jazztronik's mellower side – the warmer, jazzier, more Brazilian-styled tunes that have always set them apart from most other modern Japanese groups. There's a lot of great piano lines on the set – starting things out mellow, and building with a nice blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation to feed the fire of groovers like "Rita", "Estar Com Voce", "Dance With Me", and the mellower "Horizon". ✨✧ Jazztronik & OthersLovetronica!! ... CD
Pony Canyon (Japan), 2009. Used 2 CDs ... $22.99
Jazztronik figures here more as a mixer than an artist – serving up 2CDs worth of music, most of it with a pretty club-heavy vibe! The package is divided up into two servings, one for each disc – Love Tribe and Jazztronica – and the former has a very upbeat, housey groove, while the second has a slightly deeper vibe – although still a fair bit of house as well. The package features a whopping 44 tracks in all – which means that some numbers have been mixed down pretty heavily – and tracks include "Fly Away (Audiowhores club mix)" by Sunburst Band, "Break The Wall (orig ext mix)" by Sandy Vs Dhany, "Get Down (club mix)" by Lost Daze vs Todd Terry, "Land Of Spirits (orig mix)" by Mastiksoul, "Nathizinha" by Tocadisco, "Roar" by Patrice Baumel, "Jeimaya (orig mix)" by UES, "Dub Africa (freedom song)" by Dubnosis, "Late Night Mission (clean)" by Aaron Jerome, "Sundy Shoutin (orig)" by Johnny Corporate, "Alice You Need Him" by The Mole, and lots lots more! Monday Michiru & OthersCo-Collaborator Works Of Monday Michiru ... CD
Universal (Japan), 2007. New Copy ... $13.99
Great grooves from Monday Michiru – a Soul Source collection that brings together a wealth of Monday's dancefloor work with a host of other artists! The tunes here are all upbeat and nicely grooving – very much that soulful Soul Source dancefloor vibe – and the package is a nice reminder that although Monday's been hitting some great mellow notes of late, she's also still one of the best club-oriented talents from the Japanese scene. A number of these tracks are from hard to find singles, and collaborators here include Da Lata, Jazztronik, Soul Source, Masters At Work, Joe Claussell, and Mondo Grosso. Titles include "Butterfly" by Mondo Grosso with Monday Michiru, "You Make Me (Studio Apartment rmx)" by Monday Michiru, "The Right Time (Jephte's King Street vokal)" by Monday Michiru, "The Real Thing" by Soul Source Productions with Monday Michiru, "Tiger Eyes (English version)" by Jazztronik with Monday Michiru, "New Beginnings" by Monday Michiru with Da Lata, "ADDP" by M-Flo with Monday Michiru, "Sunshine After The Rain (MAW 12" mix)" by Monday Michiru, and "Higher (Spiritual Life voc)" by Monday Michiru with Joe Claussell. ✨✧ N'sawa-SaracaAnother Town ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 12.99
The second album from a really great group – the brainchild of keyboardist Yasushi Karasawa, who has a way of putting together his sounds that's very unique! There's a freshness here that reminds us of the excitement we first felt when falling in love with Japanese groups back in the 90s – not that Yasushi Karasawa is in the same territory as Nobukazu Takemura or Jazztronik, but his music has this way of refining itself down from its influences – really separating itself with its execution – still jazz, but maybe more sharply defined from the pack! One of the unusual elements in the album is the presence of Raphael Sebbag from UFO – who doesn't really sing, but provides a bit of voice from time to time – and the rhythms also separate the group from the usual jazz combo, as they're spacious and blocky – not trying for a groove at all, but somehow finding a gentle one in the space between the notes. Karsawa's keys are great – nice and warm, and balanced with raspy tenor from Osdamu Inoue – plus bass from Yoshimasa Otsuka and drums from Yosuke Hase – on titles that include "Vt Vt", "Cross Point", "Another Town", "Preachy", "Dual Butterfly", and "Nepenthes".
