✨✧ Daniel Casimir & Tess HirstThese Days ... LP
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
Bassist Daniel Casimir really wowed us with his last set for the Jazz Refreshed label – but this time around he teams up with vocalist Tess Hirst, and creates a sound that really blows us away from the very first note! The music is future-thinking jazz at the core, but has lots of complexity along the way – changes in tone and rhythm that never lose the groove too much, but which also show that you can do lots more in jazz than just straight swing or free improvisation! Robert Mitchell provides lots of Fender Rhodes and other keys – and while the vocals of Hirst don't dominate the tracks, she provides a righteous message that really gives the record a lot of direction and power. Another fantastic gem from the contemporary London scene – with titles that include "Don't Let Them", "Magic Money Tree", "What Did I Do", "Representation", "These Days", "Security", "They Come Over Here", and "Uncle James". Ashley HenryAshley Henry's 5ive ... LP
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
This might be the first we've ever heard from pianist Ashley Henry – but given the quality of the set, we imagine that we might be listening to his music for many years to come! Henry's got this wonderful conception of rhythm – as if he's sometimes racing ahead of the bass and drums, and grabbing up all these handfuls of notes – scattering them quickly in these broad waves of soulful colors, while the bass of Sam Vicary and drums of Sam Gardner swing in and keep things moving forward! There's a sense of freshness to this album that reminds us of the time we first heard the music of Robert Glasper many years back – even though Henry is a completely different stylist – as you'll hear on titles that include "Deja Vu", "Altruism", "Deimos", "St Anne's", and "Monk's Dream". Seed EnsembleDriftglass ... CD
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic album by this up-and-coming spiritual group from London – an ensemble led by alto saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi, but definitely a unified group effort all the way through! Konishi composed all the music – and a few songs feature words by Langston Hughes – and the rises with a proud, vibrant spirit right from the start – full of bold modal rhythms, and risen to the heavens on a mix of two trumpets, tenor, trombone, and tuba – plus piano, Fender Rhodes, and some mighty nice bass and drums. All tracks are long, and very individual – not slavish spiritual jazz numbers trying to recapture the past – but instead a very bright vision for tomorrow. Titles include "Afronaut", "Wake (For Grenfell)", "Mirrors", "Interplanetary Migration", "The Dreamkeeper", and "The Darkies". CD

Sarah TandyInfection In The Sentence ... CD
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
Soaring piano, romping drums, and a hell of a lot of spiritual energy from the contemporary London scene – a really fantastic outing as a leader from keyboardist Sarah Tandy, a talent we'll certainly be hearing more from in years to come! The music is fresh and visionary – filled with spiritual currents, but also driven with more of the direction of a hardbop record – thanks in part to the excellent work on drums from Femi Koleoso, and the strong solos from Binker Golding on tenor and Sheila Maurice Grey on trumpet. Bassist Mutale Chasi also has a very strong presence in the group – and really helps the record find its flow – and Sharon plays a bit of keyboards on the record, too – sometimes overdubbed with her piano. Titles include "Timelord", "Bradbury Street", "Nursery Rhyme", "Under The Skin", "Light/Weight", and "Snake In The Grass". CD

✨✧ TyWork Of Heart ... LP
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2018. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Nice one from Brit hip hop mainstay Ty – living up to the title with personal lyricism from the heart, but soulful a broader, universal sense too – with appearances by John Robinson, Deborah Jordan, N'fa Jones, Julie Dexter, Umar Bin Hassan and more! Ty is hands on with the production as well, with a lean, spacey bounce that'll get heads nodding without crowding out the rhymes. Includes the title track, "Eyes Open" with Roots & Deborah Jordan, the spiritually resonant standout "Somehow Somewhere Someway" with Umar Bin Hassan, "Brixton Baby" with Mpho, "Marathon" feat Ladonna Harley-Peters, "Folks Say People Say", "World Of Flaws" with John Robinson, "Raindrops", "As The Smoke Clears" with Randolph Matthews & Malik MD7 and more. ✨✧ TriforceTriforce's 5ive ... CD
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hard-hitting electric combo from the currently explosive London scene – a group who initially began as a trio, hence their name (also a reference to Legend Of Zelda!) – but who wisely added in the guitar of Mansur Brown to further sharpen the corners of their sound! The lineup features bass, drums, keyboards, and guitar – played with the intensity of some great fusion combo from the 70s, but with a bit more of a cosmic-focused vibe – almost as if a live jazz group were trying to create the sort of fast rhythms and quick shifts in the music of 4Hero, while also putting their own stamp on the sound! As you'd imagine, it takes a hell of a lot of dexterity to play at that level – which these guys have in droves – and titles include "Righteous", "Swank", "Red Lagoon", "Mikayoko", and "Elijah's Remedy". ✨✧ Rosie TurtonRosie's 5ive ... CD
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rosie Turton's not only a fresh voice on trombone, she also finds a way to make the instrument come together in a way that's quite unique – really sparkling with some warmly spiritual energy here on her entry for the Jazz Refreshed series! Turton's phrasing alone is worth the price of admission – as she's got this very earthy tone that's completely wonderful – and the group also features a surprising amount of jazz violin work from Johanna Burnheart, who uses her instrument in a way that's more along the American spiritual vibe of the 70s – ala Billy Bang or Leroy Jenkins – than in a more traditional jazz violin mode. Burnheart's instrument swells and soars nicely alongside the trombone – and the group's got these nicely crackling drums from Jake Long, bass from Twm Dylan, and piano and keyboards from Maria Chiara Argiro. Luke Newman speaks a bit on "Stolen Ribs" – and other tunes include "Butterfly", "Orange Moon", "The Purge", and "Unknown". CD
