Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad with Gary BartzGary Bartz – Jazz Is Dead 6 ... CD
Jazz Is Dead, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Saxophonist Gary Bartz joins the duo of Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad – bringing a warm sense of soul to their soulful backings – which range from funky to spacey, and do a nice job of capturing the mid 70s feel of Gary on record! The sound isn't the Larry Mizell or Ntu Group version of Bartz – but a warm, spiritual take on alto sax – with strong solo that really soar out over the proceedings, even when the Young/Muhammad rhythms might not be as dynamic – but that's maybe no surprise, given that Gary Bartz always made the best of any situation – and really shines here amidst the Fender Rhodes, Hammond, guitars, and vibes that make up the rest of the music. Titles include "Soulsea", "The Message", "Day By Day", "Blue Jungles", "Spiritual Ideation", and "Black & Brown". CD

Jazz Is Dead, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really great entry in this excellent series – one that not only features lots of great Fender Rhodes from Brazilian jazz legend Joao Donato, but also vocals from Loren Oden on almost every track – which makes the whole thing feel like a fantastic hybrid of Joao's genius with a righteous approach to spacey soul! Oden sounds maybe even better here than ever before – singing jazzily, and drifting in and out of the instrumentation – which often has a more dynamic lead in the mix, with lots of work on a variety of instruments from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad – upbeat, but just a few shades short of funk, which works perfectly for the way that Donato slides his Rhodes in and out of the tunes. Titles include "Forever More", "Sua Beleza E Beleza", "Desejo De Amor", "Aquarius", "Nao Negue Seu Coracao", "Liaisons", and "Adrian Ali & Gregory". CD

Jazz Is Dead, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic combination of funky grooves – the studio talents of Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and the Brazilian-tinged fusion of the legendary Azymuth! The jazzy trio are in great form here – tunes that are lean, and which really offer up all the best aspects that the group brought to their music back in the late 70s and early 80s – spun with a slightly different format by the lineup of Alex Malheiros on bass, Ivan Mamao Conti on drums, and Linklon Kiko Contentino on Fender Rhodes and keyboards – but handled perfectly by Adrian and Ali in the studio – with just the right sort of sound to avoid some of the slicker production that the group had on some of their other American recordings from years back. All tunes are new originals – and titles include "Pulando Corda", "Friendship Samba", "Apocolyptico", "Cat Jump", "Fall Afternoon", "Ao Redor Do Samba", and "Sumare". CD

Jazz Is Dead, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A great new showcase for the legendary keyboard work of Doug Carn – and a set that's very different both from his famous albums for the Black Jazz label, and some of his organ jazz records in more recent years too! The set's maybe got a more pronounced influence from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad than some of the others in this series – as Carn's Hammond B3 and Fender Rhodes still get center stage, but the grooves are very much in the heavy funk style of Younge's legacy of recent recordings – sharp drums, strong basslines, and horns that are sometimes jazzy, sometimes seemingly touched by currents of Ethiopian work from the past. All tracks are originals, and titles include "Processions", "Dimensions", "Windfall", "Down Deep", "Freedom At Sunset", "Nunca Um Malandro", and "Lion's Walk". CD

Yet this record may well give Marcos the fresh spin he really needed – while also respecting the soulful, jazzy currents of his early 70s work – set up with the kind of perfect arrangements and production that Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have brought to this Jazz Is Dead series – but which comes out sounding completely different here, thanks to the qualities of Valle's vocals – which maybe sound more rhythmic and jazzy than we've heard in years. Incredible throughout – with titles that include "A Gente Volta Amanha", "Our Train", "Gotta Love Again", "Oi", "Isso E Que Eu Sei", "Quiera Bem", and "Nao Saia Da Praca". CD

An album with Roy Ayers in the title – but which also features the man himself in the music – really sounding wonderful here, and recreating some of the best sounds of his classic work from the 70s! For some reason, Adrian Younge always likes to put his name in the lead, even when working with classic artists – like The Delfonics – but as with his record with that group, this project never has Younge eclipsing the real star of the set too much – as the record is very much Roy's own, and is full of the kind of sublimely soulful sounds that have always made Ayers one of our favorite artists of all time! Roy plays vibes, sings, and delivers the kind of well-tuned soul tracks that we always love so much – alongside bass, Fender Rhodes, and other instruments from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad – plus work from Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Wendell Harrison on tenor. Titles include "Hey Lover", "Synchronize Vibration", "Soulful & Unique", "Sunflowers", "Shadows Of The Past", "African Sounds", and "Solace". CD

Jazz Is Dead, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most fantastic record to date from the hands of Adrian Younge – a project done in collaboration with Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and one that features guest appearances from some of the musical giants who first inspired Dusty Groove many years Back! The core energy of the set comes from Younge and Muhammad – who are in a similar funky soul groove as their previous Midnight Hour recording serving up a blend of jazz and soul in a mode that clearly draws a lot of 70s inspiration, but which also has this very fresh, contemporary energy too. Yet there's also a strong difference here once each of the guests step into the mix – a stellar lineup that features alto from Gary Bartz, Fender Rhodes from Marcos Valle and Joao Donato, flute from Brian Jackson, drums from Ivan Mamao Conti, and Hammond B3 from the great Doug Carn – all players who really up the jazz ante for the record, and make the whole thing sound even deeper than most of Younge's other recordings. Titles include "Distant Mode", "Nancy Wilson, "Down Deep", "Apocaliptico", "Jazz Is Dead", "Hey Lover", "Nao Saia Da Praca", and "Conexao". CD

The most political album we've ever heard from Adrian Younge – a set that stands as a much stronger, much more individual message than anything he's ever given us before! All Adrian's previous instrumental elements are in the mix – heavy funk, with a special soundtrack sort of twist – but the music is set to much more righteous, powerful lyrics that are sung by Loren Oden, Chester Gregory, and Sam Harmonix – spelling out political themes and cultural concerns that are extremely resonant with the contemporary listener, and which have a lot more force than some of Adrian's more old school-styled projects. Titles include "The Black Broadcast", "Revolutionize", "Double Consciousness", "Revisionist History", "James Mincey Jr", "Margaret Garner", "Race Is A Fallacy", and "The March On America". Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/FourmenonlyModern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/Fourmenonly – Complete Recordings (Trees/Position 2000/Fourmenonly Vol 1/Science Fiction Stories) (3CD set) ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... $38.99 42.99
A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD

Plug Seven (Australia), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
A great little compilation – and one that really makes us want to hear a lot lot more from all the artists in the lineup! Think of this one as a bit like some of the excellent Brownswood compilations that have hipped us to changes on the London scene during the past few years – as this package showcases an amazing array of music that's been coming out of the Melbourne scene – artists who are heavy on influences from spiritual jazz, cosmic soul, and other mind-expanding modes – really moving past some of the simpler soul and funk we might have heard from the city in the previous decade! The scope of music here is really great, and there's not a dead cut in the bunch – just the kind of tip-of-the-iceberg sounds that makes us hope that Plug Seven will be giving us a lot more of these artists in years to come. Titles include "For Yu Sakamoto" by James Macaulay Quartet, "Waiting" by Jazz Party, "Improvisation #2" by Greg Vinod Perrin, "Dempsey Roll" by Superfeather, "Women's Choir" by Godtet, "Everything I Need" by Daniel Merriwesther, "Sooki The Love Dog" by Laneous, "Sweet Water" by Barney McAll, "True Realm Of The Coin" by The Rookies, and "Work" by Moses McRae with Crooked Letter. Mindblowing jazz from Japan – a tremendous introduction to the 70s scene in Tokyo if you've never heard this music at all – and a package that also includes a fair bit of rare tracks, even if you're not a newcomer! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! By the end of the 70s, Japanese fusion would get more global exposure – but most of the tracks here are acoustic, save for Fender Rhodes lines – and feature completely inventive, imaginative sounds – often set to grooves that are modal and spiritual too. A fantastic collection throughout – with tracks that include "Blind Man" by Shintaro Quintet, "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu, "Aya's Samba" by Eiji Nakayama, "Earth Mother" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa, "Kaze" by Takeo Moriyama, "Long Neal" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Unknown Point" by Mitsuaki Katayama, and "Little Island" by Fumio Karashima. Flying Lotus is not only very much alive on You're Dead! – he's as lively as ever – delivering his best, most diverse record to date! The Flying Lotus sound is in peak form here – glitchy beats and spacey keyboards, deftly layered samples, and carrying boundless influences from cosmic soul jazz to leftfield hip hop! Standout moments include the tracks "Tesla" and "Moment Of Hesitation", both with some incredible keyboards by Herbie Hancock, plus the uber-moody, Ennio Morricone-sampled "Turtles" – but the whole thing is great, and shows that the Flying Lotus phenomenon is still in ascension, circa 2014. Sulene is on four of the album's ten cuts – and brings in a deep soul vibe that focuses and steps down a bit of the group's instrumentation – which then opens with lots of strong solo work when the instrumental tracks come into play – maybe a more righteous take on a 70s funk band, as if they've been listening to spiritual jazz in their free time. Krzysztof KomedaAstigmatic – The Music Of Komeda ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... About April 15, 2021 (delayed)
❔
Possibly the most fantastic recording ever from the greatest talent of Polish jazz! The material was recorded in 1965, in the years before Komeda followed Roman Polanski to the US to score his films like Rosemary's Baby – and it's one of the greatest modernist albums of the 60s jazz scene on either side of the Atlantic – a record we'd rank right up there with the best from Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Joe Harriott, or other forward-thinking talents of the generation! The style is incredibly modernist, but with none of the over-indulgences that later plagued the Polish prog-oriented scene, and with none of the non-jazz influences that could stop a session like this dead in the water – and instead, the band grooves mightily in a blend of sharp edges and modal rhythms – a tremendous blend that makes the album as appealing to fans of more soulful jazz as it does to those looking for bold modernist statements. The quintet features 2 of Poland's other key jazz figures from the time – Tomasz Stanko on trumpet and Zbigniew Namyslowski on alto sax – and other members include Gunter Lenz on bass and Rune Carlson on drums. Titles are all Komeda originals, all nice and long – and include "Astigmatic", "Kattorna", and "Svantetic". LP, Vinyl record album

A strong statement from drummer Dylan Ryan and Sand – Dylan's trio with guitarist Timothy Young and bassist Devin Hoff. This is in a more paired down setting than we've heard Dylan in recently and it's damn strong stuff! Chicago-bred musician Ryan has never been one to heed stylistic boundaries – mixing up free jazz and avant rock into a unique, compelling sound. Now a citizen of LA, he's sounding as fresh as ever. The rhythmic interplay between Ryan and Hoff is equally invigorating in tightly walloping arrangements and the looser ones, and Young's fiery electric guitar is awesome to behold – particularly on the feedback-flavored rave ups. Includes "White Nights", "Barocco", "Psychic Journey", "Mayan Sun", "White Magic", "Soft Rain On A Dead Sea", "Time Stalkers", "Translucent Spheres", "Dreamspell" and "Sky Bleached". CD

Gil Scott-Heron at his early best and most revolutionary – circa Small Talk At 125th And Lenox, Pieces Of Man and Free Will, plus a host of rare and unreleased material – the complete Flying Dutchman Masters in a masterfully compiled anthology! Rather than simply collecting the original Flying Dutchman albums into a box set, BGP does a terrific job here of organizing it by style. Disc One (Songs) focuses on the soul-based songcraft – while Disc Two (Poetry, Jazz & Blues) features the strident jazzy poetry that inspired most hip hop and spoken word to come. Disc Three features alternate takes and rarities – all of which have never been officially released before now! The set includes every recording that Gil made for Flying Dutchman that's known to exist – and if you're keeping tally, that's all of the tracks from the above-named classic albums – plus the great "Artificialness" from Pretty Purdie's Stand By Me record with Gil on vocals – and the surviving alternate takes. Even if you have all of the original albums, the set is worth picking up for the bonus material and the thick, nicely done booklet of notes and photo – which really adds some top notch historical perspective. 51 tracks on 3CDs: "Lady Day And John Coltrane", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Whitey On The Moon", "Free Will", "Pieces Of Man", "Brother", "Ain't No New Thing", "The Needle's Eye", "The Get Out OF The Ghetto Blues", "Evolution (And Flashback)", "Billy Green Is Dead", "The Middle Of Your Day", "Save The Children", "Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul?" and many more. Mike TaylorMike Taylor – Trio, Quartet, & Composer – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A fantastic tribute to the overlooked genius of British pianist Mike Taylor – an artist who made a few key contributions in the late 60s, before turning up dead in the River Thames at the young age of 31! The core of the package is Mike's debut Trio album – a lost set of modernist piano jazz from the British scene of the late 60s – very much in the mode of the best American work of the time by pianists like Steve Kuhn or Don Friedman! Taylor's got an incredible touch on the keys – a post-Bill Evans mode that uses space as much a sound, and which paints in broad colors and tones that seem to glisten in their own unique place in the musical spectrum. The sound is free, but never too "out" – and the trio performs a number of strong originals like "Just A Blues", "Two Autumns", "Guru", and "Abena" – plus completely transformed versions of "Stella By Starlight" and "All The Things You Are". CD then also includes one quartet track from the album Pendulum – recorded with Dave Tomlin on soprano sax, in a 14 minute take on "Night In Tunisia". Then, the set really steps into a few surprises – as Taylor composed the music for a few Cream tracks (bassist Jack Bruce was an early jazz partner of Mike) – so the set features the early Cream recordings of "Passing The Time", "Pressed Rat & Warthog", and "Those Were The Days". ✨✧ Gary BurtonGenuine Tong Funeral ... LP
RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ JBsFood For Thought/Doing It To Death/Damn Right I Am Somebody ... CD
People/Robinsongs (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Essential funk in a single set – three killer albums from James Brown's legendary backing group! First up is Food For Thought – the classic first album by The JBs – James Brown's Fred Wesley-led backing band, and the force behind most of his greatest records of the early 70s! The band are incredible at this point – sharper, harder, and funkier than just about any other combo around – and that includes all the thousands of groups in the funky 45 underground who were always trying to copy their sound, but never got things this right! Not only are the rhythms the stuff of legend – but the use of the instruments is far far above the norm – as can be heard on the mindblowing "The Grunt", which was sampled heavily by Public Enemy to great fame – and which features a saxophone solo that sounds more like a whistling tea kettle! The set collects some of the group's best early singles, and includes all of the short little funky cuts that made them a legend right out of the box – "Pass the Peas", "The Grunt", "These Are The JBs", "Hot Pants Road", "Wine Spot", "To My Brother", "Blessed Blackness", "Theme From King Heroin", "Escapism (parts 1 & 2), and "Gimme Some More" – all together here in one tight little album of massive funky hard beats and breaks! Doing It To Death is an incredible album – a landmark piece of funk that nobody should be without, funk fan or not! The album is the second to feature James Brown's famous backing combo of the early 70s – and unlike their first one, which was really more of a collection of singles, this album has the group playing hard, long, and loud, in the free funk improvisational mode that was James' real contribution to the music at the time. The tracks are all incredibly long, with James at the forefront, egging the band on with shouts and comments – but also letting them open up large instrumentally, playing in a mode that's as much jazz as it is funky soul. The whole thing's peppered with some nice shorter segues between tracks – but the long cuts are the winners, and are some of the best funk ever recorded! Titles include "Mo Peas", "Doing It To Death", "La Di Da La Di Day", "You Can Have Watergate, Just Gimme Some Bucks & I'll Be Straight", and "Sucker". Last up is Damn Right I Am Somebody – quite possibly our favorite record by the JBs, ever! The set starts with a wonderful conversational bit – rapping and musing on the idea of "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" – showing the group in a political and righteous mode for the first time ever. The grooves then kick in – with the same heavy funk as on earlier records, but also a nice nod towards experimental production – from strange fade ups and fade downs, to stark time and rhythm changes, and even bits of electronics used to create some very cool moments in the grooves! The whole thing's as dead funky as can be, and is stuffed with insane classics like "Blow Your Head", "Same Beat", "Damn Right I am Somebody", "I'm Payin' Taxes, What am I Buyin'", and a great cover of Marvin Gaye's "You Sure Love to Ball"! CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of classics from Deodato – back to back on a single high-quality CD! First up is Prelude – a legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". Deodato 2 is filled with funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". Plus, this CD reissue features 3 bonus tracks – "Venus", "Do It Again", and "Latin Flute"! CD

RCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A groovy little gem from early 80s RCA – a set that sparkles with the same sort of energy as the label's work with Keni Burke at the time! Steven & Sterling are a hip duo who trade vocals back and forth nicely – working over rhythms that are mellow and midtempo, often with a hip undercurrent of jazz as well! The pair worked together previously in the trio Living Proof – but really come into their own here as a duo – with a mature sound that's even better than before. The players are a big factor in the album's sound – and they include Reggie Burke on keyboards, Paul Jackson Jr on guitar, Ollie E Brown on drums – all working with arrangements handled by Sylvester Rivers and the album's producer Tito Jackson – who's surprisingly sharp at the helm of the whole thing. The balance here is great – smooth, but never sleepy – and the record stays away from some of the more chart-friendly modes of the time. Titles include "One Magical Night", "Fragile", "Don't Stop", "Just One Step", "Dead Giveaway", and "Tomorrow". CD

Genius work from one of the greatest arranger/producers ever! David Axelrod isn't what you'd exactly call a household name, but over the past 40 years, he's had an undeniable influence on modern music! This set documents some of Axelrod's greatest work – his time at Capitol records during the late 60s and early 70s, when he was working some very unusual magic under the guise of simple pop records. The core of the package features tracks from David's own albums of the time – rare instrumental gems that mix together jazz, funk, and complicated soundscapes – and which have gone onto have a huge impact on the sound of hip hop production. Other tracks include Axelrod-handled productions for some other Capitol artists – surprisingly little tunes that break out with wonderful little twists, turns, and sly funky bits! Fantastic rhythms from percussionist Rubens Bassini – a set that has all the raw live energy of a Latin jazz jam session, but which also carries some of the sweet touches of the bossa nova scene in Brazil – a really wonderful mixing of modes that makes the album a gem all the way through! Rubens plays with the fire you'd expect from his image on the cover – bringing a lot more lively percussion to the record than usual for a Brazilian jazz set of the time – while the larger backings shade things in on some sweet colors – with a nice mix of piano, woodwinds, and some especially great vibes! The record's an excellent jammer that takes a bossa nova groove, and infuses it with some heavier Afro-Cuban rhythms – creating a jazzy style stuffed with infectious changes – on titles that include "Coco Seco", "Barquinho", "Cuban Mambo", "Mirage", "Maria Conga", "Mensagem", "Love For Sale", "Quem Quiser", and "Ceu E Mar". Atco/Morello (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Five full albums from Jerry Jeff Walker – presented here in a box set with original album art too! First up is Mr Bojangles – a fantastic early moment from Jerry Jeff Walker – a set that contains the huge "Mr Bojangles", but also features lots of the other sorts of amazing songs that really set Walker apart from the rest! The work is poised perfectly between folk and country – both worlds that would soon revere the smartness of Jerry Jeff's songwriting skills – and a young David Bromberg is an important part of the sound, on both lead acoustic and electric guitar! The production is great – as stripped-down as a folk record, but with some of the sensitivity and jazzier currents of a singer/songwriter album – and in addition to "Mr Bojangles", other tunes include "Gypsy Songman", "I Keep Changin", "Maybe Mexico", "I Makes Money", "Little Bird", "The Ballad Of The Hulk", nd "Round & Round". Next is Five Years Gone – a set with a cover that almost looks like some 80s indie rock record – which is maybe a good indication of just how far Jerry Jeff Walker has stretched out his sound since his debut! The style here is free of the folksier elements of the past – fuller arrangements that have piano and organ doing as much as guitar – mixed with bits of dobro and vibes that shade things with more subtle country colors – even though Jerry Jeff here is a lot less of a country singer than he'd soon become! Instead, there's a very open, honest presentation – on material that is very post-folk, and in a singer/songwriter mode that should have made Walker huge at this point. Titles include "Tracks Run Through The City", "Dead Men Got No Dreams", "Janet Says", "About Her Eyes", "Seasons Change", "Help Me Now", and "Happiness Is A Good Place To Visit But It Was So Sad In Fayetteville". Bein Free is an overlooked classic from Jerry Jeff Walker – and a set that's very different than his crossover pop of a few years before! Walker here really explodes as both the singer and songwriter that would make him an underground legend in the generation of Kris Kristofferson, Kinky Friedman, and Townes Van Zandt – someone who can touch mainstream country with his styles and sound, but who was also in a very separate space – one that was hip enough to get plenty of nods from the cognoscenti in the worlds of rock, folk, and singer/songwriters. The Dixie Flyers back up Jerry Jeff here, and give the record a nicely unified sound – thanks in part to work on piano and dobro from Jim Dickinson – on titles that include "Vince Triple O Martin", "But For The Time", "A Secret", "Nobody's", "Some Go Home", "Where Is The DAR When You Really Need Them", and "I'm Gonna Tell You". On the cover of Jerry Jeff, Walker looks more like a country singer than on previous records – and he maybe sounds more like one too, but with a richness and sensitivity that maybe echoes some of the Elektra albums of the period by Mickey Newbury – although a bit more upbeat too! As with Newbury, Walker's an artist whose songs earned great money for others – but who's always maybe one of the best interpreters of his tunes – working here with offbeat shifts in styles that are far from common country, and which maybe also echo the range of modes that Kris Kristofferson would evoke on his earliest records too. Titles include "Lone Wolf", "Bad News", "I'm Not Strange", "Comfort & Crazy", "Banks Of The Old Bandera", and "Her Good Lovin Grace". Too Old To Change is a record that's maybe a bit too early in the career of Jerry Jeff Walker to earn the "too old" in the name – it was just a bit over a decade since his debut – but it's also clear that Walker has lived a lot of life in the space of time, which you can definitely her in his choice of material and vocal performance. There's less originals than before, but Jerry Jeff does a great job of moving between up-close and personal songs and a few more rockish moments – opening up the sort of space that made his records like this a key bridge between the worlds of Kris Kristofferson and Steve Earle to come. Titles include "Mountains Of Mexico", "Old Nashville Cowboy", "Hands On The Wheel", "I Ain't Living Long Like This", "Too Old To Change", and "Northeast Texas Women". CD

A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! The set's clearly a product of the Trump moment – with rhymes by Kool AD, and songs that are more righteous than we ever would have expected from Akinmusire a few years before – built around his own trumpet and occasional words, the keyboards and piano of Sam Harris, and fantastic use of strings from the Mivos Quartet – whose contributions shade in the jazz moments with a power that's similar to the use of strings on some of the early Spike Lee soundtracks. The titles alone will give you an idea of the album's approach – "A Blooming Bloodfruit In A Hoodie", "Free White & 21", "The Lingering Velocity Of The Dead's Ambitions", "Miracle & Streetfight", and "Americana/The Garden Waits For You To Watch Her Wilderness". ✨✧ VariousEven More Original Raw Soul ... CD
Instinct/Soulciety, 1998. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
For this, the 3rd volume in Soulciety's Raw Soul series, they've dropped the pretense of the set being old material, and instead have put together a bunch of new funky tracks from their label (plus a few other tracks from outside sources). There's a lot of nice jazz funk tracks on here with a classic JB's sound to them – like "Eddie's Thing" and "The Flute Tune" by Push, "Wait (Don't Rush Me)" by Tony Cook, and "Back From the Dead" by Bobby Byrd. The set's also got the Pharoah's great funky "Pharoahs Love Y'All", plus more by The Max, Cole & The Gang, and The Soul Quality Quartet. CD

✨✧ William Hooker & Thomas ChapinCrossing Points ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1992. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Dark-edged, long-form improvisations from the duo of William Hooker on bass and Thomas Chapin on tenor – recorded in the early 90s in New York, but done with a freewheeling sound that really carries on a loft jazz legacy! Chapin's definitely got an ear for some of the rawer, more exploratory sounds that the European free scene helped to forge – but he also has an earthier, more soulful approach too – knowing when to bring in a bit of swing when needed, and not just fall into textures and tones. Titles include "The Subway", "Addiction To Sound", and "The Underground Dead". CD
