Dave Brubeck24 Classic Original Recordings – Distinctive Rhythm Instrumentals (Jazz Heritage pressing) ... CD

Really great early work from Dave Brubeck – recorded with his early trio that included Cal Tjader on both drums and vibes – instruments he'd sometimes play on the same track! The rest of the trio is completed by Ron Crotty, an excellent bassist who did plenty of great work on the San Francisco scene in the 50s – and the package features material from the first 3 early 10" LPs on the Fantasy Records label! ✨✧ Buddy RichKeep The Customer Satisfied (Jazz Heritage pressing with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacific Jazz/Jazz Heritage, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Buddy certainly knew how to keep the customer satisfied – as you'll hear on this hip set of big band grooves, recorded by Buddy for Liberty Records in 1970. The set's got Buddy working with a tight group of younger players, in a mode that's not exactly funky, but which owes a lot to the funking up of the big band scene that was going on during the late 60s. There's electric bass underneath most of the cuts, and bubbly organ emerges from the horns on a good number of titles. Tracks include "Groovin Hard", "The Juicer Is Wild", "Long Day's Journey", "Celebration", "He Quit Me", and more. CD also includes bonus tracks "Body & Soul", "Happy Time", "Nitty Gritty", "Straight & Narrow", "Cornerstone", and an alternate take of "Groovin' Hard". CD

✨✧ Stan Getz & Charlie ByrdJazz Samba ... CD
Verve/Jazz Heritage, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a big early proponent of bossa nova rhythms, and had already been experimenting with them on his records of the time – yet also gets a key extra "umph" here in the presence of Stan's tenor – a bold, rich, soulful sound that really helps give the music a lot of direction – in ways that still resonate strongly all these many years later! Getz is completely sublime – a master of tone and timing throughout – and perfectly fit to these tunes. Rhythms are mostly from Byrd's trio, augmented with some extra percussion – and titles include the classic "Desafinado", plus "E Luxo So", "Samba Dees Days", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba De Uma Nota So", and "Baia". ✨✧ Jackie McLeanLet Freedom Ring ... CD
Blue Note/Jazz Heritage, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A young Jackie McLean at the height of his powers – really stretching out here, but never going too far out – a perfect balance between his modern bop of previous records, and his groundbreaking "new thing" jazz to come! The group is a relatively straight ahead one – with Walter Davis on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but the tracks are all quite long, and have this really arch sensibility on Jackie's horn – this edge, this cry he didn't have a few years before – easily one of the freshest voices in alto sax at the time, yearning here to break free with new ideas and new modes of expression. The vibe is perfectly balanced – like McLean's classic A Fickle Sonance – and titles include the classic "Melody For Melonae", plus "Rene", "I'll Keep Loving You", and "Omega". CD

Tomasz StankoJazz Message From Poland ... LP
Be! (Germany), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A jazz message from Poland, and one that's served up loud and proud, too – thanks to tremendous work from trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and a very sharp-edged group! The music here has that open flow that some of the more fusion-based players were exploring in Poland at the time – but the instrumentation is all acoustic, and also has a modal sensibility too – echoes of the territory that Stanko explored in the 60s, but taken to much more freewheeling territory on the long tracks on the set. The group features Zbigniew Seifert on violin – who, like other great European players on the instrument in his generation, manages to work with phrasing that's almost sax-like at times – very different than the heritage of jazz violin from previous decades, and surprisingly great. Other musicians include Janusz Muniak on flute and tenor, Bronislaw Suchanek on bass, and Janusz Stefanski on drums and percussion – on the titles "AEIOE", "Heban", and "Piece For Diana". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $19.99 26.99
A fantastic look at the righteous current of energy that swept through American music at the end of the 60s – that huge wave of knowledge and political inspiration that still stands as one of our favorite moments in jazz and soul! The Civil Rights generation had gotten some things accomplished, but not everything – and a new wave of action arose in various scenes of the underground – not just pushing the musical formats past anything that had happened before, but also doing so with a strong message of pride and empowerment! This collection surveys some of the best tracks of that moment – and also provides a great batch of historical notes to put the whole thing in context – done in collaboration with the book of the same name, but equally great as a soundtrack and document on its own. The package is overflowing with Dusty Groove classics – and titles include "Sweet Songs" by Sarah Webster Fabio, "Surtal Ihklas" by Doug Carn, "Vibes From The Tribe" by Phil Ranelin, "Desert Fairy Princess" by Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, "Sounds From The Bush" by The Mandingo Griot Society with Don Cherry, "Is It Too Late" by Duke Edwards & The Young Ones, "Strong Men" by David McKnight, "Black Narcissus" by Joe Henderson, "Malcolm X" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, "Mother Of The Future" by Carlos Garnett, "Red Black & Green" by Roy Ayers, "African Rhythms" by Oneness Of Juju, and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron. ✨✧ Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz EnsembleHard Luck Soul ... CD
Aragorn/Jazzman (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful lost relic, and a monster batch of long jazzy grooves! The album was recorded in the great tradition of "musicans in prison" albums, like those by The Escorts in the early 70s, and it features an incredibly soulful band made up of jazz musicians in lockdown at the Ohio State Penitentiary during the mid 70s! We don't recognize any of the names on the album, but the players work with a hell of a lot of soul and spirit – on longer tracks that almost have the feel of 70s work by The Pharoahs or Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Way better than anything you'd usually get of this nature – and definitely light years beyond any school or army band recording – and much more like a 70s underground spiritual jazz set. All of the material was written and arranged by Logan Rollins, and the tracks have a large group feel, with long drawn out grooves, and plenty of room for nice nice solos – and titles include "Psych City", "Mantra Dance", "Counterry Bosa Davan", and "Java Man". Navarro adds in work on moog and juno keyboards, plus a bit of voice and percussion – and the whole thing is blended together with the kind of production work and editing that make a record like this as much of a sonic experience as it is a session of free-thinking jazz. ✨✧ Ethnic Heritage EnsembleBe Known Ancient/Future/Music (deluxe 2LP edition) ... LP
Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". BoscoeBoscoe (with download) ... LP
Kingdom Of Chad/Numero, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
One of the hippest records ever to come out of Chicago – the sole recording by Boscoe, a group who was even more obscure and experimental than contemporaries like The Pharoahs or Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Like those groups, Boscoe has a very unique, very visionary approach – one that's not content just to echo the standard post-Coltrane modes that other spiritual jazz groups around the country were hitting – but which instead moves into territory that touches on the darker sides of funk, soul, and spoken word of the time – all with a message that's incredibly powerful, and conception that's wonderfully fresh throughout! The group's lineup features tenor, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, and drums – but they way they're put together is often far different than other funky combos – and it's clear that the group had as much of a sensibility about the overall sound of their record as they did their freer grooves. At times, there's a righteousness here that recalls the best of the early Westbound Records scene from Detroit – but there's an even higher agenda too, which is more in keeping with the spiritual aspriations of their Chicago contemporaries, and which really show up in the lyrics. The whole album's a masterpiece from start to finish – unlike anything that we can think of, still ripe for rediscovery today, and just the kind of set that makes us prouder than ever of our Chicago heritage! Titles include "We Ain't Free", "Money Won't Save You", "Now and Den", "He Keeps You", "I'm What You Need", and "Writin' On The Wall". LP, Vinyl record album

CCSCCS – A's, B's & Rarities ... CD
EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Brilliant work from CCS – a jazz-rock big band led by UK blues rocker Alexis Korner, arranged by Brit easy maestro John Cameron, and produced to full strength by the legendary Mickie Most! The group had a sound that was really great – with lots of fuzzy guitars up front in the mix, supported by a larger, fuller blend of horns, funky bass, and drums. The sound was a more rock-based take on styles that had been showing up on late 60s soundtracks and 70s sound library albums – but which is served up here with a more straightforward punch that makes for plenty of guitar-based funky moments. A few tracks get a bit bluesier – in keeping with Korner's heritage – but the whole set grooves pretty darn nicely, and features 2 previously unreleased numbers! Titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Boom Boom", "Salome", "Tap Turns On The Water", "The Band Played The Boogie", "Hang It On Me", "I Want You Back", "If I Never Sing Another Song", and "Primitive Love". Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire/Need Of Love ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

A great German combo, and one with almost as much jazz as funk in the mix – quite a nice change from the usual group of this nature! There's a warm glow to the record right from the start – a vibe that comes from the tight trumpet lines of Michael Voss, who also sings a bit – and even more so from the vocals of Koko Kay, who sings on some of the best tracks – and gives things a slow-burning sound that's mighty nice. The style's kind of a blend of deep funk with jazzier overtones – and titles include "Life Shines", "Hifivin Time", "Awesome Change", "It Ain't That Bad", "The Heritage", and "Global Tribe". CD

Ogun (UK), 1993. New Copy ... $14.99
An incredibly spiritual session from percussionist Louis Moholo and his ensemble Viva La Black – recorded on the occasion of a series of concerts in Moholo's homeland of South Africa – and done in a way that's as much a document of the group's trip as it is a recording of the music in the concerts. Many of the tracks are shorter passages that flow together with longer ones – piecing together the warm spirit and soulful expression allowed to the group during the tour. And the music itself shares in a heritage that runs back through the 60s work of Mingus and Roland Kirk, the 70s experiments of the AACM, and the rich jazz-in-exile work of Moholo himself! A strangely beautiful little record – the standout career effort from tenorist Jim Pepper – a Native American player who draws heavily here on his heritage! Although Pepper plays sax on most numbers, he also sings a fair bit too – in kind of a raspy style that alternates from slightly soulful to somewhat chanting – all in a uniquely haunting way that's unlike anything else we can think of! There's a definite jazz core to the record – guitar from Larry Coryell, piano from Tom Grant, and drums from Billy Cobham and Spider Rice – but the sound is often far from standard, given the vocals and Native American influences. Honest Jons (UK), 2012. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing bit of music – and an incredible document of generations of creative jazz energy as well! The legendary Phil Cohran teams up here with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a collective made up of Cohran's sons, who follow strongly in the rich legacy of his own Artistic Heritage group – yet in a very different way! Hypnotic Brass have caught the ear of many during their bright rise to fame – with a fluid, horn-heavy groove that's really amazing – echoes of Sun Ra and other Chicago creative legends – yet played almost entirely on brass instruments, which gives them an even bolder vibe. Here, working with their progenitor brings the group even more depth than before – an excellent sound that really spins things out wonderfully – percussion layered underneath the horns, solos taking jazzy flight, and an overall righteous vibe that holds things together beautifully. The album's way more than the sum of its parts – and those parts are already rich indeed – and titles include "Stateville", "Cuernavaca", "Ancestral", "Spin", "Zincali", "Apsara", and "Frankincense & Myrrh". Taifa/Athens Of The North (UK), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A totally righteous little record – originally put together in support of a local stage production in mid-70s Chicago, but a set that's come to gain some global funky fame over the years! The record mixes together spoken bits, sung vocals, and some very cool instrumentation that includes lots of Fender Rhodes and guitar, plus excellent reed passages from the young Chico Freeman – all with a hip-stepping vibe that's a fair bit like the best soul-based soundtracks of the period! The spoken parts are especially great – and really make the record stand out from the pack – and the whole thing has a progressive, positive energy that follows in the spirit of earlier Chicago artists like Oscar Brown Jr or the Artistic Heritage Ensemble. The core story features a Black Fairy who's self-conscious about her social standing and race – and learns to empower herself by tapping into her inner strength and pride – very powerful stuff for a children's stage at the time, and a message that's unfortunately still very relevant all these many years later. Titles include the killer modal jazz number "Black Land Of The Nile", which almost feels like one of Archie Shepp's spiritual vocal tracks – plus "The Streets Of Harlem", "Afrika's My Home", "Travel to Afrika", "Black Fairy Returns", and "Hey Black Child". One of the best compilations of New Orleans funk we've ever seen! Sure, the reissue market is always filled with stuff from the Crescent City – but so many New Orleans compilations are cheapo knock-offs, designed to cash in on the drunk Jazz & Heritage crowd, or they're simplistic sets with the same 10 tracks over and over again. This wonderful batch of tunes was put together by the folks at Soul Jazz – legendary for their work in putting together serious compilations to please the novice and expert alike – and it's got some of the best overall work we've ever seen in trying to pin down New Orleans funk. Now Again, Mid 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A lost legacy in spiritual jazz – two albums recorded by a Boston group who worked far from the limelight in New York – in a very underground scene where they recorded these two very special albums in the 70s! Their sound is very collaborative and freewheeling – an approach that reminds us a lot of music by Phil Cohran and The Artistic Heritage Ensemble. The first album in the set is The Beginning Of A New Birth – a record that really lives up to its title, given the joyous energy it brings into being – a very collaborative vibe that has the entire ensemble working together on two side-long tracks – mixing rootsy percussion, avant solos, and unified voices that really give the music a special touch! The mix of ensemble vocals and reed elements is a bit like some of the Max Roach or Billy Harper projects of the time – but the approach is looser, less structured, and very organic. Players include Michael Cosmic on alto, Raquib Ishma'll Hassan on tenor, Phil Musra on soprano sax, Shaddu Jones on piano, and Robert Fuff on bass – and titles include "The Beginning Of A New Birth" and "The Prayer". As Time Flows on is the second record – and has a style that's maybe slightly more compact – still every bit as spiritual as before, but with some shorter tracks that bring the group's ideas into even deeper focus! The group is smaller, but still uses voice along with their instrumentation – which comes from the work of Earl Grant Lawrence on flute, Jamyll Jones on bass, Shaddu Jones on piano, and Larry Roland, Roy Hall, and Chauncy Hutcherson on percussion. Some vocals are more solo, and even hit a bit of a hip protest vibe – and titles include "Nine Degrees & Cold", "Black Woman", "To Do Nothing", "The Mind", and "Rain". Comes with a great booklet – which tells the group's unique story! CD

The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

Honest Jons (UK), 2009. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The amazing full length debut of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a cool combo from the Chicago scene who've been making some big waves around the world over the past few years! The brass-heavy group have a family legacy that links them to the Artistic Heritage Ensemble of Phil Cohran – and an approach to their music that mixes spiritual jazz, deep funk, and elements of New Orleans music too – a really unique style that has earned the group's rare singles some tremendous praise – and which is finally ready to step out fully in this wonderful album! The horns are even harder and heavier than before – honed through some touring around the globe, and brought into focus here beautifully – bristling with energy from the very first note. The set features guest appearances from Malcolm Catto, Tony Allen, Flea, and Damon Albarn – but the real strength of the record lies in the group's amazing horns and rhythms – on titles that include "War", "Gibbous", "Alyo", "Ballicki Bone", "Jupiter", "Marcus Garvey", "Party Started", "Sankofa", "Satin Sheets", "Hypnotic", and 2 versions of "Rabbit Hop". ✨✧ World's Experience OrchestraBeginning Of A New Birth/As Time Flows On ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ...
CD

Philips (Italy), 1972. Very Good ... $33.99
If you can forgive the title of this one, you'll find it to be a very groovy record! The album's a killer batch of funky instrumentals ("black sound") recorded in Italy in 1972 by Augusto Martelli ("white people") – and it's got the groove and swing of some of the best Italian soundtracks from the time, no surprise, as Martelli had his hand in a few from that era! The music is really great, with some excellent sax and flute work that takes the tracks into a jazzier mode than usual for this sort of thing! Loads of great percussion too – and titles include "Loco Love Motor", "Mondo No", "Krypto Blues", "Ma ne Vale La Pena", "90th Compleanno", and "Sara Stato Il Futuro". LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This is the kind of funk they've been hiding from you all these years – the real deal, the heavy stuff, the type of work that's made driving around the country looking for rare 45s so worthwhile! This material's the kind that makes a trip like that happen – super-rare funk from Texas, dug up by the Jazzman posse, and given the stamp of approval by DJ Shadow! The package is a perfect introduction to the lost heritage of Texas funky work – as it not only includes 21 searing tracks of funk (some of the best we've heard compiled in a long time!), but it also features a breakdown of the different scenes in the state, and a full set of notes on each tune, complete with an image of the original 45! The whole thing's unbelievable – as well researched as it is hard and funky, and a delight to the ears throughout. Titles include "Give Everybody Some" by Mickey & The Soul Generation, "Sissy Strut" by Joe Bravo, "Soul Pot" by The Soul Ones, "Every Man For Himself" by The Road Runners, "Super Funk" by Vern Blair Debate, "Soul Pride" by Little Joe & The Latinaires, "I Turn You On" by Latin Breed, "Funky Stuff" by Little Jr Jesse & His Teardrops & The Tears, "Funky Chick" by The Majestics, and "Do Your Thing (parts 1 & 2)" by Zapata. Spiritual Life, 2003. Used ... $0.99
One of the most enigmatic albums we've heard on the Spiritual Life imprint – a warm and soulful set of tracks that more than delivers the heritage-heavy promise of the title! At their core, the tracks have the cross-cultural house music approach that we've come to expect from Spiritual Life – but deeper in, they've also got jazzy touches, including great vocals by Christiane D, and lots of acoustic Latin percussion, which really opens up the sound. Pretty wonderful all around, with a sound that makes this one way more than a batch of dance tracks, and an ambitiously cultural agenda that's perfectly delivered! Titles include "To Live", "Gainde", "Mohawk", "Glory", "Who Knows", "Love Always Love", and "Feed". CD
