Jazz DefendersKing Phoenix ... LP
Haggis (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $24.99 28.99
The Jazz Defenders are a group who definitely live up to their name – a combo who start things out in the deep funk territory of some of their labelmates on Haggis, but who also bring in plenty of jazz inflections too – working here in a great hybrid of the two modes, with a range that's a lot deeper than you might expect! And we'll admit, these guys look a bit soft on the cover – but the record's got plenty of bite, and the horn parts are especially nice – tight work on trumpet from Nick Malcolm and tenor from Nicholas Dover – all sewn together with a strong mix of rhythmic piano, organ and Wurlitzer from George Cooper – who also wrote most of the material on the set. Titles include "Munch", "The Oracle", "Twilight", "Love's Vestige", "Wagger Jaunt", and "Perfectly Imperfect". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousStudio One DJs Vol 2 ... CD
Soul Jazz/Studio One (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... $9.99
They chat, we rock! More sly, slick and wicked Studio One goodness, with a bad and bold crew of top notch Dee Jays coming correct over a choice batch of Coxsone Dodd's finest rhythms. Soul Jazz has hit just about every stop from here to Kingston in their fab reissue series, and the follow ups keep coming, with this second volume of toasting and boasting keeping up the pace in fine, fine style! You know the drill: super tight, richly annotated packaging wrapped around a fat set of rude and right numbers like Prince Jazzbo's "Pepper Rock" and Lone Ranger's "Keep On Coming A The Dance". 18 numbers in all, including "Ram Dance Master" by Brigadier Jerry, "Reggae Wiggle" by Bobby Jackie & Soul Defenders, "Fever Teaser" by Dennis Alcapone, "Gun Court" by Little Joe, "Rocking Machine" by Prince Francis, "No Man Version" by King Stitt, "Crab Walking (discomix)" by Prince Jazzbo and "West Gone Black" by Jah Jesco. CD
